The Praying Mantis can be identified by its typically bright green coloring and long, skinny body. It is commonly found in environments around moist and vegetation-rich areas such as forests and gardens.
Like most mantids, the Praying Mantis is a solitary insect and prefers to hunt alone.
The Praying Mantis is an carnivore and typically feeds on small insects, including flies, moths, spiders and crickets, but has been know to fight (and eat) small animals like, lizards, birds, frogs etc.
Some of its predators are birds, spiders, hornets, and lizards.
Fun fact: Praying mantises have exceptional eyesight and can rotate their heads 180 degrees.
Contrary to popular belief, The Praying Mantis is (currently) not listed as endangered, and is generally beneficial to the environment as it helps control the population of pests.
The Praying Mantis can be known to have parasitic relationships with horsehair worms (praying mantis-host, horsehair worm-parasite)
The stealth movements of the praying mantis have made it a symbol of meditation and contemplation. In China, the insect has long been honored for its mindful movements; It never makes a move unless it is certain that is the right thing to do.
it is not advisable to handle a Praying Mantis without proper training as they have a strong bite and can cause pain to humans if mishandled. However, they are generally not aggressive towards humans and will only defend themselves when provoked.
My person rating: 5/5 ★★★★★
I love mantids, they are extremely unique creatures and are one of my favorite bugs to keep and observe!
(Keep in mind this rating is just my personal opinion, you can feel differently about the praying mantis, There is no correct answer for how to feel about bugs!)
Thanks for reading and happy bug spotting! if you've got any questions or just want to chat bug stuff feel free to comment or dm me!

i set up a few new cute lil watering areas for bugs and critters out in the backyard garden today! i had more spots but the squirrels and cats kept fucking with the bowls so i decided to rearrange things.
the second photo, from left to right, has a saved can lid with sugar water, a nice (temporary) dish with cold filtered water + lots of places for bugs to sit, and one of my original watering bowls with fresh water & a chopstick so they can climb out.
I like to think I can stay somewhat responsible while drunk, but then I remember how last night I got McDonald's, started feeding it to a swarm of wasps and speaking Latin to them, because apparently they're "ancient, so yk... They'll understand it" (??? lmao) and tame easier.
And it's not even the wildest thing abt last night either... Like, someone proposed to me 💀
(●´∇`●) I wanted you to know that I loved the fact about ants farming, it made me really happy. I got to work the next day and enthusiastically told my coworker about it. I even considered calling my mom to tell her, which sounds kinda silly in retrospect hhh
Thank u, you really did cheer me up :)
Happy to help there friend! Insects are a wealth of wonderful facts and knowledge. They get a bad wrap for bing kinda spooky looken but they're super cute and Interesting once you get to know em a bit more!
Like, did you know that when comparing to body size, the southern California Mite is the fastest animal on the planet? Able to move up to 300 times it's body length per second! When scaled to human size that's around 1300 miles per hour! Not of course the mite isn't actually moving that fast, but when comparing body size it's astonishing.
Hey guys. Sorry if this post doesn't flow, I'm really tired and sad today so I'm gonna rant about my second favorite song. Second because nothing tops Source by Fever the Ghost. Anyway, this song makes me cry so often that I just have to talk about it. Bugs are (if you couldn't tell) some of my favorite things EVER. And that's EVERYTHING you could ever think of. Billions and trillions of concepts, objects, creatures, phenomenons, etc., and bugs are my number one on the list. Some people are absolutely flabbergasted by that fact about me. I completely understand phobias and things like that, everyone who experiences that is excused. I'm talking about those who, for example, see a bee working away on a flower and crush it under their foot because it wields a stinger. I hope you can see what is wrong about that. (I know the term "bug" doesn't apply to every little critter, so just assume every time I say "bug" I mean EVERY creepy crawly that walks this Earth.) It's things like that that make me want to become an entomologist even more. I want to combine my art skills and my knowledge on bugs to make PSAs, publicly speak, anything! Anything to make my message about just how misunderstood the creatures are clear and heard. That leads me to The Bug Collector. Heynderickx captures my image of this very, very well. I would die happy if I could convince someone to change like the individual Heynderickx sings as does. I am inspired by this song so intensely. Thank you Haley Heynderickx for your masterpiece. I could talk about this forever, ever, ever, but you are most likely bored. Can you see why I like Hollow Knight so much? To my fellow bug lovers, by the way, I am comforted by the fact you exist. Together we can work to change the way the world sees our little misconceived pals.
I love it when there's a little bug in the bus and it crawls on me. That's my little travel buddy and I'm dropping them off at the next shrub when I get off <3
