Okay, bet 🖤 I've done one of these before but I'm gonna go stats this time.

My most-played song on Spotify so far for 2024 is Antimatter by Silent Planet.

I wrote almost 100k more words in 2022 than I did in 2023 (270,202 vs 170,474). To be fair to myself, I hadn't written anything from August '23 to March '24.

My most-played video game is Fallout 4, with a whopping 1,215 hours and 43-minute playtime. I only beat it three times, once with the Minute Men and twice with the Railroad).

When Casey introduced the new turtle to Raph and his brothers, Raph didn’t really have an opinion. That was up until Casey revealed that it was his daughter. When he asked who was their other parent or did he raise them with anyone, Casey just smiled awkwardly.

Maybe Raph didn’t know them yet.

His daughter swayed back and forth nervously, asking Casey if she really wasn’t allowed to say who in fear of breaking time rules or whatever. And that’s when it clicked for Raph.

His crush, who he may or may not have been keeping away from his family so that he could spend the most time with them, did that too. Whenever they were nervous, they swayed.

It had been a week and Leo had finally decided to believe that this young turtle was his daughter in the future. She shared a lot of traits with him, not just the red stripes along his eyes. She had a good sense of humor (it had his brothers groaning), she liked comics, she liked basketball, she cracked her knuckles like he did, and she even knew some spanish.

There was one thing different though. She had a totally different laugh them him. But it sounded so familiar to him that it always caught him off guard. He listened to his family’s laughter, wondering if she picked it up from one of them. But no, it didn’t sound similar enough.

It wasn’t until he was horribly flirting with you and that you ended up laughing at one of his fails when he realized that his daughter’s laugh matched yours. Perfectly matched. He didn’t know what relieved him more, that he kept you laughing in the future or that you were able to put up with him long enough to raise a kid with him.

Donnie didn’t really think he ever wanted to be a father. But when a turtle younger with a soft shell and matching goggles (which he was later told was actually his that she took in the future), he inferred that for some reason he had changed his mind. But he couldn’t figure out what could’ve been enough to convince him.

Mikey demanded a family photo upon seeing the cute turtle. He gathered up everyone, including you and Casey and Draxum.

When Donnie looked at the photo, he noticed both you and his daughter were shyly covering their smiles with a hand in the photo.

That ended up being the first bullet point in his new journal as he began to observe both your traits and his daughter traits. When he reached about 50 shared mannerisms, he finally allowed himself to believe that he had a chance with you. Or at least, future him did.

“You guys didn’t tell me you had a sister!” you complained, rocking on the balls of your feet as you observed this new turtle. She was even shorter than you and Mikey.

She nervously stepped back and mirrored you, rocking on her feet as well.

Mikey blinked and looked back and forth between you two, the cogs and wheels in his brain slowly turning.

And then you both sneezed the same way. And then you both smiled the same way. And then—

Mikey could barely contain himself. He launched over to you and grabbed you, hugging you so tightly you wheezed for air.

Messy handwriting and hands that cramp from writing too long, but have no problems with typing

Three different notes apps with specific and set purposes

Enjoying classical literature, but mainly the children's books, and only owning the cheap paperbacks

Speed reading articles in the browser on your Nintendo switch

Shirts that look like a button up layered with a sweater vest but are actually only one piece

Printing and binding fanfictions for personal collection, never to be shown or sold to anyone else

Having four or five different diaries, all incomplete and all from different times

Not having immediate access to a library, but having an epub reader to cope

Iced chai tea lattes with way too much sugar

Painstakingly learning the "right" way to do something, only to do it your way instead

Preferring songwriting and lyricism to other forms of poetry

Looking up the required texts for a college course and getting them, but not actually enrolling in said college course

Having a bookshelf full of books, some you've read and some that you haven't, and there's also a microscope on there somewhere

I needed a fresh start from my former system. Also very happy that I found my next journal, an A5 Leuchtturm in light grey! I'm obsessed and can't wait to write again in such a notebook – first and last time I kept my daily journal in one was in 2018-2019 already!

Russiagate continues to survive like a science fiction monster resilient to bullets.   

The latest effort at rehabilitating it is an interview by Adam Rawnsley in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine of one Michael van Landingham, an intelligence analyst who is proud of having written the first draft of the cornerstone “analysis” of Russiagate, the so-called Intelligence Community Assessment.

The ICA blamed the Russians for helping Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.  It was released two weeks before Trump assumed office. The thoroughly politicized assessment was an embarrassment to the profession of intelligence.

Worse, it was consequential in emasculating Trump to prevent him from working for a more decent relationship with Russia.

In July 2018, Ambassador Jack Matlock (the last U.S. envoy to the Soviet Union), was moved to write his own stinging assessment of the “Assessment” under the title: “Former US Envoy to Moscow Calls Intelligence Report on Alleged Russian Interference ‘Politically Motivated.’”

A recap of 2023

so this is the year I wrote. I wrote more than I have ever done and so I thought it would be nice to look back on 2023 and look a little further back as well.

I used to write fanfic, I think I started about 14 years ago. I am not a native speaker and my English definitely needed some work then. I also have so many qualms about my old writing (I apparently hadn't found out about paragraphs yet), but we all have to start writing somewhere.

I stopped writing little by little, feeling burned out and completely stopped in 2018 (for various reasons). I don't think I wrote anything at all in 2019 or very little. In 2020 I dipped my toes in again with a few oneshots.

End of 2021 is when I started writing again and finally came back to writing Harry Potter fanfic. I started out with a longfic of 70K words! It was a struggle and I think it's like a muscle that wasn't being used. A Guiding Light is the fic that got me back in and I posted it throughout 2022.

And then I started two new fics because I was inspired again. I started posting those at the end of 2022/start of 2023. Knight of Mine and Peverell's Progeny have both surpassed the word count of Guiding Light with ease. It was never my purpose to get to a certain word count, and it is not what I focus on, but going from nearly 0 words in 2020 and slowly increasing, it's amazing to see myself putting out so many words.

And as well this year I focused less on what things I think people want to read and got a little more self-indulgent and it is so rewarding. It really makes me enjoy writing it even more.

My mental health has been shit before and it really took a nose dive in 2018, but this year I finally started feeling like myself again. My anxiety has gotten so much better and in turn I have been sick way less (although I did knock it out of the park at the start of the year with about 5 weeks of various illnesses) so I feel like I can enjoy life more in general. I am not sure if my writing helped me get there or if I am writing more because I am feeling better. All in all, I think writing has been helping me get through various things and it is one of the only things I enjoy doing consistently.

I haven't kept exact track of how much I wrote in the last year but based on my AO3 statistics as they are today (26th of Dec), I think it's safe to say that 2023 has surpassed all the others before.

You can see the majority of what I wrote, 414K of a total 541K, has been posted in the last year. It's crazy to think about. A lot of people found my writing as well this year and it's been so amazing getting that feedback ...as well as crazy paternity guesses with emojis, begging me for horse smut (that is still a no-you know who you are) and bribing me to update early... they really do make my day and some of you are too funny for your own good.

Looking ahead a little, I want to see what else I can achieve in the upcoming year. I am not setting any specific goals for myself other than continuing to work on my ongoing fics and not starting too many new ones (*pushes Pirate AU back under the bed*) Buut I am curious how much writing I actually get up to and so I made myself a little tracker.

Bullet journaling is the only other hobby aside from writing that I seem to be able to do consistently. I just kind of fell out of it in the summer of 2022 and finally picked it back up again for 2024. I think when I wasn't writing, it was a good different outlet for me and I still enjoy it. It simply slipped out of my habits, especially when I moved out on my own last year and I was too focused on keeping up with chores and other stuff. Now I am a little more organised, so I do hope to keep it up. It will also force me to do something else than writing once in a while, which is probably healthy for me.

This tracker looks a little chaotic, I know, but i wanted to get everything on one page. Maybe next year I can tell you exactly how much I wrote.

And word counts are nice but I think improving is also important and I do feel like I have managed to learn a lot of things this year and I will continue to do so in the coming year. I take great inspiration from other people's writing. I always get inspired when I read an especially good fic (which often ends up with me starting a new WIP, send help) and I discover new ways to put in descriptions or how to phrase something a certain way. And talking to other fic writers on here, or discord, is also where I learn a lot. A ton of you are so talented and it is such a joy to be able to discuss things, pick your brains and get feedback. Sometimes I just learn things by reading along to someone else's discussion. Sometimes you find answers to questions you didn't know to ask!

I also want to thank my beta readers, who have read so many words this year. They are so FAST and then apologise for being slow. I cherish them so much.

Why the Name Notebook Witch?

Because I have a zillion notebooks 😊

One reason I chose "Notebook Witch" is because I hand write in notebooks all the time.

Call me a 2018 basic b*tch, but I still avidly bullet journal using a traveler's notebook with 4+ inserts.

I also write Morning Pages every day. And I write every other line on every other page so I go through notebooks quickly.

I keep a notebook for my political organizing endeavors, for organizing the Boston Poetry Marathon, and one as a grimoire.

I also have a small traveler's notebook with three half size inserts that I use for a separate bullet journal for work.

So! When Dollar Tree came out with a bunch of stitch-bound heavy-feeling paper notebooks and a bunch of whimsical folders and composition notebooks, plus cute 2024 calendars, I added quite a bit to my collection 😬🤷🏼‍♀️📓

I have always been enamored with stationery, from my Sanrio Hello Kitty collecting days as an 80s kid 🐱 I know these will all get used, too.

I also keep a calendar in every room and on every work table I have because it helps me remember appointments. I even keep all appointments in a Google calendar but truly, the only chance I have of retaining everything I have to do and keep track of is to write appointments out digitally AND analog.

Thus, Notebook Witch is my moniker, and notebooks—blank and filled—take up much shelf space in my study 🤓

I've recently heard about the book The Gods are Thirsty by Tanith Lee. Is it any good or accurate? Thank you.

I’d never actually read the book, but seeing as it could be found for free on Internet Archive I went ahead and read the first 100 pages (three chapters). I figured the historical accuracies and inaccuracies presented there might be able to serve as a sample for the whole 500+ pages book. My findings I think are best presented in a bullet list:

First off, there are things that are clearly made up but I suppose rather harmless at the same time. Here we can for example include Fréron being the one who introduced Camille to Lucile and her family, as well as Robespierre having a dog named Spartan that got run over by a carriage and died in late 1789. We have nothing concreate that stands against these things being possible, but at the same time there’s nothing suggesting they took place either. Someone who doesn’t know that will however be very prone to believe them, which could prove troublesome were they to forget from where they’ve learned it.

Then there are things that, like those listed above, are embellishments, but that I would argue are more problematic, since they actually change, make up or add onto actual people’s beliefs and/or actions. Here we for example have a part about Danton arguing that God doesn’t exist, when, IRL, there seems to be no hard evidence for Danton being either an atheist or a believer. On the eve of the storming of the Bastille, Camille leaves a note for Lucile’s father, telling him to keep his family safe, when no such note has actually been found. In another part, Camille remembers Lucile telling him that she would prefer to never marry, a sentiment that is hard to find when looking over her conserved texts.

There are some instances of the author injecting historical myths without having bothered to check how well backed up they actually are. For example, after Camille has called for the people to arm themselves on July 12, the onlookers go on to take leaves from the nearby trees in order to distinguish themselves as members of the insurrection. If we’re to believe Camille et Lucile Desmoulins: un rêve de république (2018) this is a detail that first appeared in a heavily embellished biography over Camille, written in 1834. Lee also borrows an anecdote right out of the memoirs of Madame Tussaud, where the artist goes to visit the stormed Bastille, trips on the staircase and is saved by Robespierre. Something which is very unlikely to have taken place seeing as Robespierre was still in Versailles when the Bastille was stormed… Still speaking of him, Lee has Camille remember the time when he held a speech to the king and queen in the rain, when the origin of this anecdote doesn’t mention any rain.

Then finally, there are blatant historical inaccuracies, like for example Hébert publishing his journalLe Père Duchesne, Robespierre removing the ”de” in his surname and Camille moving to Rue Thêatre Français already in 1789 (all these three things didn’t happen until a year later), Danton being the inventor of the slogan ”Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” (it’s actually Camille and Robespierre that hold the shared responsibility for it), Charlotte Robespierre being in Paris in 1789 and finally, perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back for me when it came to the author’s historical research, Saint-Just being there already in 1790.

So is it an accurate book? If the first 100 pages are representative for the entirety of it (and if the synopsis on wikipedia is to believed) then NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Is it a good book? That’s entirely up to everyone’s individual taste. I must admit that the author’s choice of switching between past and present tense, third person and first person narrator as well as referring to Camille as both ”Desmoulins” and ”Windmills,” together with SJ being called a unicorn and a scene where Danton feeds Camille grapes before they have a threesome with an OC, made me feel increasingly like I was reading a fever dream. So if you have a soft spot for crack fics (even though this isn’t actually supposed to be one) I’d say go for it, especially since the book can be read for free. I would however not advice you to try to learn actual history from it, but then I would probably say the same for most historical fiction.

Reading back if my old bullet journal I kept occasionally throughout 2018/19 like oh baby your life is about to fall apart in ways you cannot even imagine :( I always thought my ‘bullet pages’ were so ugly and not good enough but they’re literally so pretty and useful but I was so unhappy. I wish I could go back in time to give myself such a big hug I feel so terribly bad for her
