i fully understand why the content might be uncomfortable to you guys now but like, please don’t self flagellate and cut yourself off from an entire genre of media because of one guy again. i saw that happen after the dream stuff and a lot of people ended up losing important things because they made rash decisions and felt like they Had to leave. but please. take one deep fucking breath. this has happened before. this has happened so much before, and in ways far worse than this. because abusers, unfortunately, exist. you should not feel guilty for being manipulated by a manipulative abuser, don’t blame yourself. do what you have to, but please, please keep in mind that the majority of minecraft youtube is fine. it is fine to continue engaging with it. it’s fine to be manipulated by an abuser and it’s not your fault. please don’t make rash decisions and end up losing things you care deeply about and being unable to get them back. distance yourself all you want, but please be careful to not do so out of emotional self harm from the guilt. that’s something this fandom encourages far too much- even outside of this- and it’s unhealthy and anyone expecting it of you is cruel.

I feel the Lucas’ character arc was one of the most solid this season. His indecision and struggle between the mainstream or nonconformity - fitting in or sticking out - and passivity versus action.

i don’t go into it explicitly in my essay so i may as well cite my armamentarium of examples here. please note that some of these examples will be pretty uncharitable towards zuko, but i figure that zuko’s actions receive enough (overly) charitable interpretations that he can stand to be criticized harshly from time to time.

when he said to aang “nice try avatar, but these little girls won’t save you,” he was being overtly infantilizing and dismissive to extremely capable girls his age in a way that emphasized their gender to diminish their capabilities. this is quite overtly misogynistic.

the way he treats katara in “the waterbending scroll” is pretty fucked up. i know that a lot of people find the way he seductively circles katara after tying her to a tree, threatening, and bribing her to be hot and even romantic, but in this scene, he is explicitly imitating ozai (we see him employ this same tactic of circling ominously with zuko in “the awakening”) to scare katara into submission. this is not only sexist in the sense that he is attempting sensuality to threaten a young girl (only a few years younger than him, but still, not great), but also just creepy and horrifying and bad in general.

“well aren’t you a big girl now?” is what he says to katara once she can finally hold her own against him in a fight. katara is only a few years younger than him, but he treats her like an incapable child, and uses that patronizing infantilisation to taunt her like he did with the kyoshi warriors. (and in fact, he continues to do so in book 3, but more on that later.)

zuko shouts “girls are crazy!” after azula manipulates him into falling into the fountain. i think this example is pretty negligible all things considered, seeing as a couple of girls did just deviously orchestrate a plot to humiliate him for kicks, but it’s at least equivalent to sokka saying “leave it to a girl to screw things up” to katara in terms of making unfair generalizations about an entire gender in the quest to insult your annoying little sister. but pretty much every sibling says something like this as a kid, so it’s pretty innocuous to me in the scheme of things.

on his date with jin, zuko remarks “you have quite an appetite for a girl.” this is obviously sexist, but it also makes me sad for what it reflects about the eating habits of every single woman he grew up around (compounded by the fact that they’re nobility and thus must adhere to strict gender roles as informed by class). i wonder if seeing jin eat was the first time he ever saw a girl actually enjoy her food.

zuko’s treatment of mai throughout all of book 3 is highly misogynistic. he expects her to coddle, comfort, and support him unconditionally while he never once considers her feelings, desires, or thoughts. i don’t even think zuko knows that mai is a human being (with a rich inner world of her own). at the beach, he behaves in a way that is controlling, jealous, volatile, and borderline abusive. he insults her, calling her dull and unfeeling; he polices the people she talks to; he feels entitled to her unconditional affection even when he treats her terribly. even when he gives her the conch shell, he asks “what? don’t girls like stuff like this?” which is incredibly patronizing and presumptuous. he demands that she act as his perfect mommygirlfriend, takes out all his frustrations and inner turmoil on her, is entirely thoughtless and inconsiderate when it comes to considering her feelings beyond giving her the most shallow, superficial gifts (and for a prince, giving someone cheap desserts and/or beach trash is not exactly a grand romantic gesture), and can’t even bring himself to break up with her face to face. mai does an incredible job of supporting zuko as best she can despite being incredibly unhappy herself and frustrated by his behavior, and somehow she is still framed by the fandom as being a bad girlfriend to zuko, when in fact the reverse is true.

zuko is also incredibly patronizing, dismissive, and downright cruel to ty lee. he basically calls her shallow, stupid, oblivious, and myopic, when of course this only betrays his own obtuse inability to read others, as ty lee is quite possibly the most perceptive, intuitive, socially clever, skilled, and brilliant character in the show. like many other characters in the show, including azula, zuko falls for ty lee’s bubbly ditz persona, and assumes that her hyperfeminine affect signifies her shallowness and stupidity. this undervaluing of femininity is of course not unique to zuko, and even the most feminist women are prone to make assumptions about people who present themselves in the way ty lee does (even katara says that ty lee doesn’t seem like a threat), which is of course also why ty lee deliberately presents herself in this way. she knows that she will be underestimated, which is all the more imperative to achieving her primary goal: survival. however, just because ty lee encourages this perception of her doesn’t mean that zuko is let off the hook for falling for it, or for being cruel to her.

while i don’t fault zuko for this as much as i do his treatment of mai, katara, or ty lee, his lack of generosity towards azula is a problem. obviously there are extenuating factors informing why he views azula as a rival. their fractured relationship is a tragic product of ozai’s abuse, and neither zuko nor azula is entirely at fault for how they view and treat the other. but zuko never makes any attempt to understand his sister or why she behaves the way she does, and never shows her the affection or concern azula shows him (in rare but nonetheless important moments), even after she has clearly undergone a nervous breakdown before their final agni kai. i know that zuko would view azula with hostility and suspicion no matter what, and a lot of it is of course deserved, but i cannot help but wonder whether his misogyny serves to reinforce his assumption of her that she is a manipulative, hysterical, dishonest harpy whose sole purpose in life is to make him miserable. lol

zuko constantly dismisses suki throughout “the boiling rock.” when sokka first points her out, zuko frowns at the notion that sokka is suddenly going to give a girl the attention he has, up until this point, been the only one receiving. of course suki does monopolize sokka’s attention, suddenly making zuko the third wheel where he was formerly a partner, but it’s hardly suki’s fault for being sokka’s girlfriend. he only barely apologizes for burning down suki’s village (which is probably the worst thing he ever did in the entire show, btw), and basically ignores her existence throughout the rest of the episode. in “the southern raiders” he refuses to read the room and barges into sokka’s tent despite sokka and suki clearly having a romantic evening planned. suki is perfectly nice and friendly to zuko despite having absolutely no reason to forgive the guy who burned down her village, but zuko is nonetheless dismissive of her as if she isn’t even there. which is rude, but also, kind of funny, so take this one with a grain of salt because it honestly makes me laugh??

ultimately, the way zuko treats katara, not only in book 1, but up until they become friends at the end of “the southern raiders,” is genuinely egregious. despite having that incredibly meaningful moment in the catacombs together, zuko doesn’t register it as significant in the way katara does, and cannot comprehend why katara would feel particularly, personally betrayed by him compared to the rest of the group. at the beginning of the episode, zuko pushes suki out of the way from falling rocks (dismissively) and then jumps directly onto katara and rolls her away from the rocks (patronizingly) as if she is some kind of baby whose legs don’t work. when katara is rightfully pissed off that a guy she hates has pressed himself directly on top of her and won’t get off, he scoffs and says “I’ll take that as a thank you” as if she is simply a truculent, ungrateful child. he later completely invalidates katara’s feelings, following her after she leaves the group, and yells at her for her audacity (because she is still not best friends with the guy who betrayed her trust and facilitated the near murder of her best friend), and barely seems to understand the source of her rage, assuming that she is displacing her anger towards her mother’s killer onto him instead of simply acknowledging the ways in which he has tangibly harmed her. he interrupts sokka during one of the only truly happy moments in his entire miserable life to ask him to rehash the most tragic, horrific day in his whole horrifically tragic life, and in this moment he reveals that he somehow does not even know katara’s name. until sokka refers to katara by name, zuko only refers to her as “your sister” (and at no point refers to her by name throughout the show until later in this scene), dismissing katara while simultaneously begging for her approval, which he admits he doesn’t even know why he craves, as if he doesn’t even respect her as a person but simply wants her approval because her totally valid anger towards him is just a pesky irritant he wants removed. he then imposes his own desire for revenge onto katara, not even realizing that his passionate fury is a product of his own personal feelings being displaced onto katara’s parallel situation (both their mothers were killed in their place as a sacrifice), and simply assumes that katara would benefit from going on a dangerous revenge quest with him. it is only once zuko realizes the sheer extent of katara’s power and empathizes intimately with her complex feelings of rage, grief, and guilt regarding her own mother that zuko comes to respect katara deeply, and from then on out their friendship is one of mutual respect, understanding, and a deep, prevailing love. but until the antepenultimate episode of the entire show (assuming that the four parter finale counts as just one episode), zuko constantly infantilizes, patronizes, dismisses, belittles, ignores, and trivializes katara.

“zuko has no frame of reference for sexism” his uncle literally sexually harassed (and possibly even assaulted depending on how you define it) a female employee on the job (june in “bato of the water tribe,” if you’re wondering). yes zuko is rightfully appalled by that, but mostly because his uncle is displaying desire for a far younger, hotter woman, and zuko finds all displays of iroh’s desire disgusting. to say he’s in no way familiar with patriarchal logic and the mistreatment of women in society is just plain absurd, when not only do we see him mistreat women, but we also witness him witness other men mistreat women—in particular, a man whom he admires and strives to emulate in all aspects of his life.

and finally, while this point is fairly obvious, the question “how is zuko sexist?” is just patently ridiculous for the simple fact that he was raised in an extremely patriarchal society and internalized rigid roles and hierarchies of class, race, and gender. so like, even if we didn’t have manifold examples of him behaving misogynistically in various ways across the show, he’d nonetheless be sexist because of course he is. like, real talk, what do you guys think sexism even is if not being informed by patriarchy and its assumptions? answer quickly

After watching the “Quiet On Set” documentary, I can’t help but feel like there are literally no good people in the entertainment industry. Even the “good” ones aren’t good. It solidifies that we don’t actually know anything about them. We only know who they present as to the media. 

I think like most people around my age, we grew up watching Nickelodeon during its golden age. I always looked forward to watching “All That” not only because it was funny, but because it was something I could watch with my older siblings. It was something the four of us could laugh together about. My sister and I still laugh over the bit from “Keenan and Kel” where Kel admits to dropping the screw in the tuna. So many iconic characters and television shows were created at the hands of Dan Schneider. 

What else was created at the hands of Dan Schneider were countless acts of abuse, harassment, manipulation, and much more. His sets were homes to child sexual abusers. Adults who are around children each and every day, taking advantage of their trust and innocence, grooming them and harming them physically and mentally. 

It’s not easy for victims of abuse to speak up. Many aren’t believed. Reliving trauma is a horrific experience, so I commend each and every person who shared their story for this docuseries. There were previous cast members who aren’t as well known who got to share their truths, there were crew members sharing stories about Dan’s harassment and sexism on set. There were many crew members that felt uncomfortable about the scenes they were shooting, but no one spoke up. Dan had so much power at Nickelodeon because he kept churning out hit after hit after hit. The parents weren’t much better, but I’ll come back to that. 

The docuseries revealed three adult men who were caught for child pornography, and for sexually abusing children. One man’s name is Brian Peck. He groomed Drake Bell for years. Joe Bell, Drake’s father, did everything he could to keep Brian away from Drake because he knew something just wasn’t right with how Brian acted around his son. Brian eventually convinced Drake to fire his father as his manager, and let his mother take over. This gave Brian the room to drive Drake to and from auditions, take him to Disneyland with him and his friends, and more. Drake Bell revealed in the documentary that Brian Peck sexually assaulted and abused him for years. Since Drake was a minor when it started, his identity was kept secret.

During the trial, many people wrote letters for Brian Peck, attesting to his character: James Marden, Taran Killam, Alan Thicke, Thomas DeSano, Ron Melendez, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle. Some of these names are extremely surprising, and others aren't at all.

Joanna Kerns saying, "there must have been some extreme situation or temptation exerted on him to influence is actions" at the time, and is now saying "I have now learned that my letter of support was based on complete misinformation.

Knowing what I know now, I never would have written the letter". For me, it's not even about her writing the letter, it's about her blaming Drake Bell, the victim, and child in the situation, as if Brian Peck wasn't a grown man who should have known better.

Kimmy Robertson also wrote victim blaming language in her letter of support for Brian Peck.

Rich Correll wrote, "it would be my pleasure to work with him again". And then he did! Brian was allowed to work on The Suite Life! Correll later said, they had no input or involvement in the casting". He also went on to say that, "Mr. Peck simply replied that 'the problem had been solved'".

The series went on from there, explaining how Dan’s behaviors just got worse and worse, and he “flew too close to the sun”. The inappropriate sexual innuendo bits on his shows happened more and more frequently. This included constant closeups on actors’ feet, many of the young female actresses being forced to be squirted in the face with various liquids to represent “money shots”. Ariana Grande probably had it the worst in that she had to film videos that went directly to YouTube, many of which included her biting her own toenails, squeezing a potato until juice squirted out of it, etc. Just absolutely disgusting things that do not make sense for a CHILDREN’S television show. These weren’t jokes for kids. This was Dan Schneider abusing his power, and seeing how much he could get away with. 

It wasn’t until Jeanette McCurdy’s mother died that Nickelodeon finally launched an investigation into Dan Schneider. Jeanette talks about this in her book, “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, which was a heart wrenching read, but well worth it. Jeanette returned to work a WEEK after her mother died from a long battle with cancer. Because of the backlash she got for that, Nickelodeon realized that it was the culture Dan created that probably made Jeanette feel like she had to come back, that she couldn’t take more time off. 

All Nickelodeon did was remove Dan from his sets, and made it so he could only watch from his office and give notes from there. Even though he wasn’t physically on set, the toxic and hostile environment was still alive and well because he was still watching everyone’s every move. 

Thanks to #MeToo, more and more women started speaking up about their experiences on set with Dan Schneider. And then in 2018 Nickelodeon finally kicked Dan Schneider to the curb after launching another investigation based off the new claims. The investigation didn't reveal proof of sexual abuse, but it revealed more cases of harassment of his actors and his crews.

Child stars are often made fun of and exploited by the media as they transition into adulthood. We watch their mental health decline until they’re caught having a breakdown. People point and laugh, and say it’s just another child star who couldn’t handle life as a grown up. But what I think a lot of people don’t understand is that many child stars are forced into the entertainment business. Parents put their financial burdens on their children, tell them they need to work to support the family. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a child. So, if something bad is happening on a set, a kid is going to be too afraid to speak up because they could be fired, and if they’re fired, then they’re not making money for their families. The parents are supposed to be on set and with the kids at all times. But so many turn the other cheek and don’t speak up because they don’t want to risk their kids getting fired. 

It just feels like no adults, not even the ones you’re meant to trust, are safe to be around. In some way, shape, or form these kids get abused. Whether it’s sexual abuse, racism, inflicted eating disorders, or other types of mental abuse, they’re not safe. No one is looking out for them. Everyone is more concerned with making money. 

The entertainment industry squeezes the youth dry and tosses them aside when they can’t legally control them anymore. And we wonder why so many of them have a tough time later on in life. The lucky ones are helped through therapy, and the not so lucky ones either turn up dead, broke, abused, or end up abusing others as they were abused. 

I am feeling very sad and heartbroken. And I’m not sure where to go from here. So many of these shows have brought me comfort and laughs over the years. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to enjoy them again. Is it okay to sit and watch reruns or should we be boycotting everything? I want to help in the ways that I can, but I also know that the world will stop caring about this in a week or so when the next big truth bomb about something else is dropped. 

People who have no moral conscious, people who are okay letting children be hurt for the sake of their own wallets shouldn’t have any power. And I hope everyone involved in hurting these kids, past and present, is forced to answer for what they did. I hope they’re shamed and cancelled and doxxed and everything else bad that can happen to people like them. I hope they go broke and become ruined. And at this point, I hope Nickelodeon just crashes and burns. They don’t deserve any salvation.

Let me start by saying that I am both trans and disabled.

Alex was never outed as a paedophile. Twitter morons making memes made that up with their lack of reading comprehensibility. The document was ALWAYS about how Alex fosters parasocial relationships with his fans, many of whom were minors within private enclosed spaces (servers). He spoke inappropriately with people from a position of power. As a 20 year old, it is YOUR responsibility to know that trauma dumping and suicide baiting kids is something you DON'T DO. That is what this is all about. People made memes on twitter, spread misinformation, and made it so that it's very difficult for people to find the original sources.

Much of the so-called 'evidence' supporting Alex are deep faked images that were NEVER part of the original document. That Hooters image was never in the original source or any of the victims' statements.

Alex's close friends, work crew, and associates have confirmed that he behaves like this behind closed doors and have stepped away from him. If it weren't true on some level, his friends and other people in the horror scene wouldn't have done this. They would've, if anything, supported him or at least told people it may not be true.

There was no transmisogyny in the original doc. It was made clear that Alex used any pronouns from the get-go. Numerous accounts of his (like his Tumblr for instance) publicly says he uses any pronouns. Just because the inappropriate behaviour occurred in a 'gender identity server' doesn't mean the whole situation is about calling out someone for talking about their gender identity - the situation is about him making servers mostly filled with minors and forming parasocial relationships with them to the point he would suicide bait and rely on them for mental health support. Additionally, all of his victims are trans or genderqueer in some way. This isn't about Alex potentially being trans at all. This is about his behaviour and lack of taking responsibility when talking to his fans.

As for ableism, yeah, Alex is probably mentally ill in some way. I have seen his rambling messages, we are aware that he was supposed to be getting professional help at numerous points and refused to because it meant he would have to take accountability. Just because Alex is likely unwell, it doesn't mean he is suddenly exempt of being held to a better standard or that he can't take responsibility. I am mentally ill too, I have done shitty things to my friends too, but I still took accountability and did the work. I went to therapy, made amends, and did better. Alex was confronted and didn't - instead they would suicide bait and manipulate. Calling out someone who's mentally ill for their inappropriate behaviour when they, time and time again, refuse to get help or even admit they were in the wrong isn't ableism.

Alex isn't guilty of being a paedophile. But he is guilty of being irresponsible when talking to fans and minors, fostering parasocial relationships, and refusing to acknowledge that his behaviour was wrong (even though he has admitted to knowing he hurt people). He needs help and needs to do better, much, much better. I am saying all of this as someone who is waiting to hear Alex's side of things, too, but it is undeniable that he has been inappropriate and abused his position of power as a creator. He seems like a person struggling through a lot, but that is no excuse for his behaviour. You can be mentally ill and/or trans and still be a shitty person who has done shitty things.

I hope Alex gets help. I do. But people in his position need to be called out for their actions or they will not change. I know this from personal experience.

This is all I'm saying on the matter until Alex makes a statement on things. In the meantime, support the victims and read their original statements on twitter (donutqq_qwq has compiled a thread of all of the victim statements).

the problem with this whole child stars situation and that brings me back to cole sprouse’s interview (yeah, i know he is problematic too) but he spoke about how his mom pushed him both him and his brother to work as a kids to sort of full-fill her dreams as an artist and also to help them financially since she was a single mom and i get that but this is the thing that also demi lovato said, at one point she wants financially sustaining her entire family and this creates a weird power imbalance where she not longer viewed her mom as a authority figure because she was acting as the breadwinner of the family.

a lot of parents know they’re setting up their kids to this situations and yet want to ignore it because they want the money and for their child’s to keep paying the bills. only alexa nickola’s mom was like yeah no, we’re leaving at the first sign that something was really wrong.

alyson stoner in her podcast (worth watching) also speaks about how if you notice a lot of the productions nowadays take place in states where rules against child actors aren’t in action for example altlanta so it’s easier for production to manipulate it. I know a big portion of child actors have had some horrible experiences at some degree and most don’t want to either relieve that or admit that it happened to them. and that’s fair.

i genuinely don't understand a parent's wish to live vicariously through their own children and push them to become child stars when they willingly know the dangers that can come from that. if you have to work extra hours as a single parent to support your children then that's what just what you have to do as an adult. you never made it in hollywood and you're still bitter because of that? too damn bad. get over it. some of these parents play an equal hand in their children's abuse and they need to be held accountable as well.

i think it's incredibly valid that some child actors don't want to reveal that happened to them when working on these tv shows/movies. some of these stories are pretty horrific, i just hope they get the help they need to heal and move on so the people who abused them won't be able to steal another minute of their peace and well-being.

"What's that?”

You hesitantly ask as you enter the kitchen. The kitchen counter fully decorated with colorful fruits that Kun keeps picking, putting them into the blender, creating a suspicious juice. Even the odd color manages to scare you. 

Kun gives you a bright open smile, rushing over to you. His hands immediately take a hold of you, one of them going to your swollen belly, making you slightly flinch.

Even after all this time, you still hate his touch. 

“Oh this? I’m just following the doctor’s orders.” he calmly says, carefully maneuvering your body to make you sit on a chair.

Your brows twist in confusion. You don’t recall the doctor saying something about fruit juices.

Kun notices your confusion, a small smile decorating his face as he leans on and places a small kiss on your forehead. 

“I asked the doctor for extra recommendations, just to make sure you and our precious baby will be healthy the entire time.” he elucidates you, his calming voice inciting the baby to start kicking, making you gasp in surprise.

Kun panics for a moment, his eyes going wide in concern, until he sees your hand going to rub your belly. He kneels down to the floor, his face at the same level as the growing bump. 

“Daddy’s here, princess. He’s gonna make sure that you’re safe and have all the vitamins that you need, baby.” Kun coos, his voice flooding with adoration as he presses small gentle kisses all over your stomach.

You merely stare at him, an emptiness filling you as you feel like you’re not even on your own body but more like someone who's watching the scene from afar.

You didn’t blame the baby but it didn’t stop you from dreaming what your life would’ve been if you had managed to get away from Kun before he got you pregnant. Not that he’d let you run away even if you didn’t want to stay with him.

You had already come to terms with the fact that you would never get away from him but lately hormones have been making your irrational fantasies of escaping grow stronger.

“I also got you more vitamins, later I’m  gonna make a schedule for when you have to take them.” Kun declares, looking above towards you. His words make you huff in annoyance, his controlling personality starting to bug you immensely. 

He ignores your action, going back to the counter and grabbing a juice filled glass and handing it to you. You gaze at the peculiar shade of green of the juice, hesitating before bringing it to your lips.

Taking in a small sip, you immediately gag with the liquid, spitting it back to the glass and putting it back on the counter.

“Ew, it tastes so bad.” 

Kun only sighs at your reaction, once again grabbing the glass and returning it to you, his hand coming to your back, rubbing small comforting circles.

“I know it doesn’t taste great, but it’s a small sacrifice you have to make for the baby.” 

Your brows narrow in exasperation, crossing your arms above your baby bump you shoot back at him.

“I already take 3 different types of vitamins, I don’t think the baby needs much more. You’re just going overboard with this, Kun.” Your words don’t have much effect over Kun but you definitely notice his fingers tightening around the glass cup. 

“Look, this is all for the baby, darling. Don’t be such a bad mom that can’t even put our baby’s health over your own comfort.”

Your mouth drops as his words hit you hard. You aren't being a bad mom. You aren't. Right?

“Yes, you are.” Kun says, almost like he’s reading your mind. He tilts the glass into your direction.

“Just drink it. Cause if you don’t and our daughter is born with any type of health problems, I’m blaming you for it.” He concludes without so much of a blink, making you doubt yourself.

Your mind runs through various scenarios and as much as you hate Kun and his overprotective nature, maybe he was right and the baby really needed this. 

Reluctantly picking back the glass, you drink small sips of the liquid, constantly gagging back on its taste yet forcing it down your throat. From your peripheral vision, you see Kun giving you a satisfied smile, his hand coming back to rub your back, somewhat making you feel better as you keep consuming the nasty drink.

The disgusting flavor burns your throat as you force it down. 

“You're doing great, honey. Just a few more sips and you’re done.” Kun incentives you, his eyes attentive towards you.

After a few more bitter and agonizing gulps you finally end the whole glass, immediately pushing the glass away from you. Kun’s features morph into a pleased expression, his hand coming to your stomach to lovingly caress the bump. 

“See, it wasn't that difficult, was it? I’m glad you were reasonable enough to not jeopardize our baby’s health.” You turn your eyes away from him, unable to look at him.

You know that the reality is that Kun is a master in manipulation and that you just fell for another of his tricks, this time using your own child as leverage to manipulate you. 

You hate him.

Every now and then I still see arguments about how "Chat Blanc and Ephemeral were meant to inform us that Adrien couldn't take part in the final battle," the implication here being that there is no possible way for Adrien to ever react in a convenient manner to this news, and that his only reactions could be "he loses control and goes berserk," or "he gets controlled by his dad." I have already expressed my views on these takes, which is that they are excuses and justifications for bad writing. But I still feel that in trying to insinuate that they are valid explanations for Adrien's inability to be part of the finale, the point of those episodes is missed, and I'll elaborate on why they aren't even good excuses now.

Despite what Thomas Astruc may suggest on Twitter, that the problem is not with Adrien in these episodes. As evidenced by episodes like The Collector and even the aforementioned Chat Blanc, Adrien is perfectly capable of fighting his father. The issue that presents itself in these scenarios isn't that Adrien can't control himself and can only react poorly, it's that Gabriel chooses to hurt his son. None of these situations happened because of anything Adrien did, they happened because Gabriel manufactured the situation into something that he could use to gain control over his son.

The issue here isn't that Adrien finding out makes him react poorly (which is a hot take of its own), the issue is with how he finds out. In both Chat Blanc and Ephemeral, Gabriel manipulates the situation to his advantage. He knows Adrien's identity before Adrien knows his or even knows that his own identity has been compromised. Gabriel is in control of all the information, and he engineers the situation to cause the most traumatic reaction in Adrien so that he can exploit it and take advantage of Adrien's distress. The issue here isn't Adrien's reactions, it's the fact that Gabriel is in control. By framing the message of Chat Blanc and Ephemeral as proof that Adrien can only react poorly to Gabriel's revelations and abuse and using that as an excuse to justify him sitting out the conclusion to his own arc is bafflingly weird to me.

And it just ends up sending the message that Adrien is apparently "too emotionally immature" or whatever the salters say, and therefore he can't ever find out about his father, or it'll only cause disaster. The blame for not being able to walk out of the situation and continue fighting the good fight with no negative effects whatsoever is placed on Adrien by insinuating that it's some inherent flaw in him that he'll never overcome, rather than acknowledge that things only happened the way they did because Gabriel specifically manipulated events and information to achieve his desired outcome. Rather than blame the abuser for his actions, the blame is placed on the victim for his reactions. That's not good.

And it ends up with the alarming implications that abuse victims are irrational and too emotional and are to blame for their reactions instead of it being the abuser's fault for driving them to this point, which is some gross abuse apologia. Indeed, the finale of Season 5 takes this one step further by having Marinette lie to Adrien about his father, because knowing would surely have him react in ways that are inconvenient for herself and everyone else to deal with (this is the writers' motivation, not Marinette's). And we can't have Adrien's trauma matter other than when it is beneficial to Marinette, now can we?

But I digress. Back to my point.

There is a simple solution to the problem of Gabriel taking advantage of Adrien. Since the issue is that Gabriel is able to manufacture the situation to his advantage because he gets to know all the information beforehand, have a reversal of that and have Adrien find out first. Have Adrien find out that his father is Monarch first, and that way, he'll have time to process everything and react to it with the support of his loved ones before he goes to fight his father with clarity and asserts his freedom. It would be a great extension of Adrien's arc of reclaiming his agency and freedom from Gabriel to have him be in control of the situation while Gabriel is blindsided.

A part of Adrien's arc is about finding relationships in which he has unconditional love and support. Have those come into play as he confronts Gabriel. Have them actually matter. There are so many ways to do this.

Have Marinette be present alongside him and have her be able to support him in a meaningful way as he faces down his father.

Have Felix prove he cares for Adrien by telling him the truth about his father and his amok.

Have Nathalie actually support Adrien by letting him know important stuff and giving him his amok back.

This is a non-exhaustive list, but my point is that there are so many ways to override the very specific situations that were present in Chat Blanc and Ephemeral and tilt the scales in Adrien's favor. It would be a better way to deal with this than to just dismiss the point of those episodes by making it seem like the problem lies with Adrien and his reactions than the fact those things only happened because of Gabriel's specific manipulations.

But there is one very simple solution to this whole issue, and it is right there in Season 5 itself. There is proof written straight into the show that Chat Blanc and Ephemeral are not the status quo. See Marinette giving into Gabriel's threats in Chat Blanc and contrast that with her going up against him and defying him outright in Pretention in a way more personal confrontation. The difference between the two episodes is that Marinette is allowed to grow. She is allowed to develop as a character and prove that she is different from the Marinette who gave into Gabriel's threats. So if she is allowed to change and develop as a character and react differently, then why can't Adrien?

Adrien's major problem in any of these situations is that Gabriel is a controlling asshat. To ensure that these situations do not happen, Adrien needs to break free from Gabriel. I posit that the easiest way to allow Adrien to not react in ways that "don't end well," is to allow him to grow and develop as a character. It would allow him to start truly breaking free of his father in such a way that when the time comes for the final confrontation, Adrien is not so easily susceptible to his manipulations and can fight back against him. It would allow him to have agency in the situation that he did not have at the times Chat Blanc and Ephemeral took place.

But unfortunately, the writers did not want to give Adrien growth and development and agency, because that would mean making him something other than Marinette's prop and love interest. That also seems to be the point of the amok rings, since their only relevance in the story is to make up a reason so that Adrien cannot go against Gabriel and needs Marinette to do it for him, and the show presents this as some great quandary to which there is no discernable solution other than simply removing Adrien from the battle altogether so that Marinette can complete his arc for him. And it sucks.

Of course! I think I have some ideas for this :) I wrote this as I was watching HOTD so I am sorry if the plot is a little everywhere. When I finished this I actually didn't finish the series but I assure you I'm working on it >:). This may make it vague but let me know if I at least got it somewhat accurate.

The past you two share is long, intense, and has had nothing but controversy.

As such you usually never got involved with the queen.

This is what sparks an adoration towards you in Rhaenyra.

You've been more loyal than Alicent... Cole... her own damn father at times.

The princess drags you with her wherever she goes.

You even end up taking care of her kids when she's busy.

You don't think the princess feels anything but friendship or mutual respect towards you.

Even when she compliments how well you are with children, you brush it off.

"I can't believe you have none of your own... you're lovely with them."

"Oh, princess... my duty is to serve you. I couldn't possibly raise a child at the same time."

For some reason... you remember her smiling when you said that.

It was strange but you didn't think of anything malicious.

Rhaenyra never really felt a true connection with her husband since the marriage.

They were incompatible, she told you this years ago.

She had feelings for Harwin up until his death... even Daemon... in the end perhaps she didn't like them as much as she thought.

No, now she felt her heart tighten when she saw you.

The princess had you spied upon and always had her eye on you.

Her gaze towards you changed from that of a friend to a dragon towards meat.

As a loyal servant who vows to side with the princess at almost any cost, you're vulnerable to manipulation.

Honestly if Rhaenyra asked you in private to bed with her, how do you refuse?

It's strange and awkward for you... but she is your princess.

Rhaenyra seems like she has the power to manipulate her darling.

Not only are you her closest ally, but you truly do care for her.

Marriage isn't possible for the both of you, not only is there controversy but Rhaenyra feels it's safer if things between you are kept quiet.

Even if you object to the relationship between you and her, Rhaenyra encourages you to keep things quiet.

For her, right?

You'd do anything for her, wouldn't you?

Oh... the moment the Targaryen civil war starts?

Your fate is sealed.

If Rhaenyra already manipulated you and dragged you everywhere already, you're going to be on her side.

Don't worry... she promises your outfit will be a lovely shade of black.

Rhaenyra's obsession in this case is slow.

The seed was truly planted when you two were young, but the obsession becomes it's full potential by the time Rhaenyra becomes The Black Queen.

You learn that the princess you once cared for isn't someone you can side with anymore.

No... she's a ruthless queen who fights and forces others to listen to her.

You included... even if there is no violence between you... her sweet tone is deceptive and forced at times when you hesitate to listen.

Rhaenyra would feel like she could do whatever she wants as a queen.

She's powerful enough to execute others with one shout.

She certainly doesn't appreciate anyone going against her word.

The moment she has this much power, you feel threatened and isolated.

If she makes your relationship public or not is up to her, she manipulates you either way.

People already know her reputation... would it make a difference if the people know since she kills those who speak of your relationship?

The Black Queen claims she loves you, with a sweet smile and caring touch.

Based on the past you share... and the bodies she's burned for you and her rule... you aren't sure what to think.

Rhaenyra says she's always loved you... but you can't think clearly with the idea of a dragon swallowing you at her command.

So you agree... and silently hope her rule comes to an end soon.

Do people really not see the inherent disconnect of the claim that Houses Claude is genuinely an amoral opportunist when his dream is to break down barriers to foster unity and peace? Like, is there not a fundamental incompatibility in having a desire for everyone to get along yet being a backstabber that throws people under the bus for their own benefit? From a personality/character standpoint, all that does is make Claude look like a ginormous ignorant hypocrite, and an idiot even though he's supposed to be smart. Because if his end goal is to create a diverse and harmonious community, how is he going to bring people together if he constantly betrays every side? And from a writing perspective, it makes no sense to have a character's actions and goals be completely contradictory and never address it.

Also for someone who is amoral, it sure is interesting in Balthus' Classroom QA Part 2 that Claude likes "ensure the fewest casualties" and dislikes "do anything to eradicate the enemy" when the question was "the war has been dragging for long so let's end it quickly". It's kinda like he has some principles or something.

Like, the idea of Claude being an untrustworthy backstabber who opportunistically takes advantage of everyone without ever growing close to them is just Hubert minus Lady Edelgard could be an interpretation of his character that aligns with at least his initial showing, or a surface level understanding of him. He calls himself the embodiment of distrust, he never fully opens up to anyone, he can in fact be fairly manipulative and callous; the crumbs are there, for sure.

But it also has to ignore how far he's willing to go to protect his people (putting himself in high danger when he is not sacrificial like, say, Dimitri is), or how he supports others having dreams for themselves (Goddess Tower), or how open he is to criticisms against what he thought (Cyril's support), or how he tries to be there for his friends (Marianne's support), or how he's open-minded enough to listen to people he initially thought needed to be his enemy (Rhea), or how violence is not just not something he considers but is something he actively rejects as a means of getting what he wants (The Alliance Leader's Ambitions, near the end), or how putting the people's lives in danger is something he is adamantly against (as you point out, Balthus' classroom question). A staggering amount of Claude's character has to be deliberately ignored in order to come to the conclusion that he's just a backstabbing opportunist who does anything to get what he wants (who magically gets fixed by Byleth's mere presence), because a backstabbing opportunist who does anything to get what he wants who magically gets fixed by Byleth's mere presence does not describe Claude.

Even if one were to take the game's writing failure of properly presenting Claude tackling racial issues (like never addressing Petra's situation despite having supports with her) you can't really deny that Claude is, in fact, a caring person after taking everything in his character into account. For all his flaws, he never abuses the trust people have in him to the extent that they are actively put in danger, nor is it ever the case that the "doesn't truly tackle racial issues" ever translate to anything so drastic as "which means he'll actively worsen relations between two countries." And, well, yes; you still do have to take into account that his dreams are of bringing people together and disregarding past bad blood. He never stops trying to achieve this dream, and he wants it to come true so badly that he is willing to let other people that he trusts rule Fodlan to work together with him to achieve it, shown in VW and even AM. That means a lot for someone like Claude, who is otherwise pretty slow to trust other people so deeply.

That's not someone who would use Leicester's bad history with Faerghus as fuel to violently invade it. That's not someone who would use Almyra's navy to make it look to Sreng like Faerghus tried to invade it. That's not someone who wants to conquer other nations and make his own come out on top. Those things describe Hopes!Claude, which 3H!Claude is not.

It's like. You know how some 3H's fans see 3H as "Edelgard, Dimitri, and the third guy that justifies my fave"? How a lot of people in 3H's fandom don't really see Claude as his own character with his own perspective and ideals and beliefs and morals that are unique to him, and only see him as a battering ram to try and knock down one of the other two lords? And so don't really care how he's characterized in other things (like fanfiction, fanart, meta, or in this case spinoff media) because they never really cared about him as his own character? But then get really, really, really defensive when you point out the flaws in their perception of him, saying that you're the one who never understood or liked Claude, because if you did you'd "realize" that he was always [insert vague, bland description that happens to prop up the lord they actually like]?

Yeah that's basically what's going on here. Most people who prefer Claude as their fave lord do not like Hopes!Claude, some of the loudest voices in the JPN Amazon reviews were of people who hated Hopes!Claude and were literally trying to warn Claude/GD fans away from Hopes as a game because of how awful their writing is, while nearly every Hopes!Claude fan that I've seen vastly prefers Edelgard as their fave lord and are - you guessed it! - very defensive when it comes to Claude fans venting their frustrations over Claude's shit-end-of-the-stick treatment he got in Hopes.

So like, yeah. It's less that people aren't directly computing that Claude's ambitions and character don't match how he's depicted in Hopes, but that they just don't care that it doesn't since 1) it justifies their fave and 2) they never really gave a shit about Claude anyway

Anyway, while people are discoursing about men and not sharing Shubble points, here’s the actual advice I got from watching the stream bc I think that probably needs to be spread more. Shubble elaborates it much better but if you can’t watch it’s better than nothing.

Physical abuse is not just hitting or kicking, anyone causing physical pain intentionally to you without consent is physically abusive, regardless of how that manifests or if it seems silly.

Pressuring someone into using a safeword on something that’s not, like, a mutually agreed thing and is just something one partner wants is controlling and creepy.

Partners who push at the edge of your boundaries and avoid safewords are abusive.

A partner insisting you’re remembering things wrong and making you seem crazy is abusive (specifically, it’s gaslighting)

Grand romantic gestures from the beginning can very easily be a sign of abuse, as abusers use it to endear themselves to their victims.

Controlling behaviour and refusing to break up while also refusing to make changes is possessive and unhealthy at best.

Abusers will manipulate things to make it seem normal to those outside of their victims- by being kind and helpful even as they neglect their victim, by pressuring their victim to treat their abusive behaviour as a joke, ect. It’s often very hard for an outside observer to know if something is abusive, and making assumptions off of what you know in front of closed doors isn’t helpful.

It’s very hard to tell that you’re being abused, and you'll often still retain affection for your abuser for a long time- this is normal, and this isn’t your fault if you wanted to stay friends.

Even if an abuser is struggling with their own problems, taking it out on you is not acceptable. People can be bottling up their emotions and struggle with depression and past trauma and that gives them no excuse to hurt you.

If your partner relies entirely on you to take care of them, and support them financially, that’s financial abuse one way or another.

Abusers tend to hurt more than one person, and their actions escalate without outside influence (be it intervention if possible or something that keeps them away from victims if not.)

Listen to your gut, if you think a relationship is bad. Even if you’ve been through this before, sometimes you can’t realise in it, but you’ll feel it subconciously.

Also, Shubble is being supported by friends who helped her cope and went through different but similar things. She's specifically mentioned right now keeping the stories anonymised, but she might change her mind, if I interpreted the last bit correctly. She's doing alright, she's healing, and it sounds like she's being believed by her friends, at least most of them. I wish nothing but growth and healing for them, and wish them the best moving forward.

I think the Fnaf movie (and all the sequels it will inevitably get) is a great way to see what Scott views as the most important aspect of each character in the series.

Spoilers below.

Obviously, Mike and Vanessa are both very different here than in the games. Mike is (PROBABLY) no longer an Afton, Vanessa is definitely an Afton, Mike isn’t going by an alias, Vanessa is a victim of abuse rather than possession, etc.

In some regard, they almost feel like completely different characters (especially Mike). So with that in mind, when we look at the traits that these characters do share with their game counterparts, we can boil these characters down to their fundamentals (or at least what Scott views as their fundamentals)

Mike is riddled with guilt over the death of his brother, which he feels like he should have been able to prevent. Even well into his adulthood, long after the deed is done, he is still trying to fix what he perceives as blood on his hands, whether that is the case or not. This guilt often manifests as vivid dreams.

Vanessa is William’s reluctant follower. She has been manipulated into supporting him, even though she knows deep down how wrong her actions are for helping him. To aid him in his exploits, she takes up a career in a position of authority that lets her inconspicuously hang out around Freddy’s.

On a personal note, I think it’s interesting that these are the traits that Scott chose to emphasize between the two characters. While Mike’s relationship with his brother is definitely a strong part of what makes his character interesting, I’d argue that it is better executed in the games because there, he actually did cause his brother’s death and has reason to feel guilty over it. I also think that Michael’s dynamic with William is just as important as his relationship with Evan/Garrett/the Crying Child—William is Michael’s shadow archetype, he represents the absolute worst of what Michael could be. The movie completely lacks this dynamic, which makes their beef feel less personal despite the fact that William did kill Michael’s brother in this timeline (though I’d argue that that’s more the fault of the fact that William only has THREE SCENES in the movie total)

Movie Vanessa fares better, but mostly because she absorbs a lot of Michael’s role from the games by virtue of being an Afton child that lived past adolescence. I personally prefer her role as William’s successor rather than as a reluctant follower; copycat killers are a staple of the horror genre, and we are severely lacking in batshit crazy, irredeemable female villains in both movies and video games. That’s more what I was hoping Vanny would end up being in Security Breach, but I also acknowledge that that’s 100% just me projecting.

Unlike the two protagonists, though, William stays mostly the same between the movie, the games, and the books. I think it’s interesting that they chose to continue the trend of giving him an alias to hide under, while his real name is something of a dirty word because of everything he did. We notably don’t have proof that he did this in the games, and it’s got me thinking. Is there a named character mentioned somewhere in the games that’s actually just William under a fake name?

Who knows. Get speculating!

She's had MORE wardrobe changes than any other RWBY character. she's a fashion victim and she looks GORGEOUS while doing every evil deed

She's the survivor of an abusive environment in a world where nothing was given to her, she learned that taking the things she wants is the only way to survive. She's such a tragic villain cause there was never a kind hand that could've lead her on a different path

3. Jessica Nigri's VA skills.

I cannot stress enough how much i LOVE Cinder's voicing. Her velvety voice when she's being mean, her grunts of frustration, how raw she sounds when she FIGHTS. Jessica Nigri does a marvellous job for her volume after volume!

4. She's a girlfailure.

She has been defeated numerous times by a little girl, has been allegedly killed by another maiden, challenged by Jaune (affectionate), kicked by THE Blake Belladonna. The list of failures goes on and i support her ALWAYS coming back

5. Her powers.

She can materialize incandescent cristals, fire, make any given weapon on the spot and BREATHE FIRE. how absolutely COOL is that !!

6. How PETTY she is.

"Do you believe in destiny?" "Yes." // "Someone once asked me if I believed in destiny and I'm happy to say I still do" Cause after coming back from the dead (almost) she es yet again ready to commit atrocities to become even stronger, i respect her tenacity

7. She looks so awesome.

The atrocities look GOOD on her and she is a feast to the eyes when she's on screen

8. She is an overconfident, manipulative, intelligent, ruthless, cunning, villain who knows exactly how to get what she wants AND she's a woman.

Enough of morally corrupted men in media, I want morally corrupted WOMEN who are POWER-HUNGRY & not afraid to take what they want !!

As the show goes on, Ruby & Cinder both face failure, loss, trauma and they both slowly lose parts of themselves. But while Ruby overcomes the struggles and becomes better, Cinder doesn't change her ways and becomes worse

As for outside the house? That’s when things get really intense as his affection is dialed up quite a bit like he still has a reputation to uphold but the touching is a lot more often like it’s better to stay home if you don’t want his lips kissing at you every time someone looks your way

Garling is willing to get incredibly messy when it comes to his darling like I can imagine that when he takes you out if someone comes up to the two of you and they just so happen to be looking at you too much for his liking then he has no qualms about performing an execution right then and there

He doesn’t even care if you see it in all honesty as that’s just a reminder for you to not try to escape as he’ll do that to anyone he thinks has you

Bitchass Celestial Dragons quickly learn also to not gossip about you because there’s no way that you’re one of them as that ended horribly for the person who did it and got caught doing that like so many of them still have nightmares about it as Garling showed no mercy

Have you been good? Garling will give you free roaming of the home, you aren’t allowed to talk to anyone and he expects you to act on his schedule like if he’s getting ready for bed at nine then you’re going to bed too unless you went to bed earlier

Have you been bad? Now he’s being cruel to you as you aren’t allowed out of the bedroom unless he’s with you, he’ll be much rougher with you as well like I’d request some medicine when he deems you as good again for when his fingertips dig into your arms

Also did you try to escape recently? You aren’t leaving the bed unless it’s for the bathroom now… You’re in deep trouble and this is where he’d mock you, he’d mock your plan and how you carried it out as he points out all the flaws and how stupid you were to think you could get away from him

You think he wouldn’t? This is Figarland Garling… The man with so much power that he can judge Celestial Dragons and get away with it, this man has problem with doing things against your will…

The amount of times that this man has forced kisses onto you is so high that you lost count a long time ago, it’s to the point where just about every single day starts off with a forced kiss from Garling as soon as he sees you

Plus the amount of times that he’s forced your body into all sorts of positions in order to fuck you and satisfy his urges alongside fuck any rebellious thoughts out of your head is incredibly high like you could probably keep track if you really thought about it but still, it would take a while

I feel like towards the beginning of your relationship, Garling is very reluctant to be vulnerable to you as he still doesn’t know quite what you might be capable of but later on in the relationship… There might just be that one day every once in a while where he is…

Part of you wants to use the opportunity for this to escape him but you never really do as these moments are the most peaceful with him like this is probably when you feel the most like you’re in an actual relationship with him and not a prisoner

It’s during these moments where you might find out things like if this is Post Gods Valley then he expresses his genuine sadness at having lost Shanks among other things, he tells you about things during moments like these and he doesn’t even get a serious look on his face when you get up to grab something

Don’t get too comfortable though as you’re still his prisoner and if you try to make a break for escape after excusing yourself to use the bathroom or something, he will be absolutely pissed…

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Oh this man would find it endearing if you attempted to fight back against him, he is the leader of the holy knights and champion of Gods Valley but here you are trying to brandish a weapon against him and make demands? It’s honestly cute and he isn’t bothered at all

He might even give you a chance to rethink this and put your weapon down before you get hurt but if you don’t listen and try to attack him then you won’t even know what happened as you’re suddenly disarmed and pinned down to the floor

Honestly you might not even be in too much trouble with this as you’re still going to be punished later but he found this fun, part of him even hopes that you start to learn to fight just a bit better so these moments don’t immediately end upon you trying to strike him

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

Towards the beginning of the relationship, he probably thought it was rather fun to watch you try to escape him as it was like some kind of fun fox hunt sort of situation where he would give you a small head start then chase after you as it wasn’t like you could get off the property

Part of him even somewhat enjoyed watching as you formulated plans so he could laugh at them when they inevitably failed later

But honestly later in the relationship, it’s more than likely grown a bit tiring like he still does occasionally enjoy hunting you down but now it’s happened so many times that he simply sighs and shakes his head when he’s noticed that you’ve disappeared somewhere

If it’s Pre? Then honestly I can imagine that the worst experience you’ll have with him is being impregnated by him with Shanks and it’s not that he doesn’t want to be a father and is horrible to you as he’s elated to be a dad but remember that you’re a prisoner…

Plus as well, you have to eventually experience losing your baby boy when Gods Valley comes around which is hard for you as you just lost your baby and chances are that Garling isn’t sure how to comfort you other than holding you as you beat at his chest and blame him

If it’s Post? Then chances are that your very worst experience with Garling in all honesty is him deciding to take you to one of the executions of a Celestial Dragon who broke the rules especially if it was the one who got caught gossiping about you

In his eyes, this is great for you both as you can see just how much he cares about you if he does this to a bad mouther but for you? You feel like you’re gonna vomit and you might actually once the execution starts getting more and more brutal…

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

The future that Garling has in mind for the two of you is probably something that would feel sweet if you weren’t a prisoner like he wants to simply grow old with you… Live a long life with you until you’re both old and grey

Maybe even have a few kids together that will take over the Holy Knights and take over his position as head of the family when the time comes for them to do so

Garling has expressed this to you on multiple occasions like he’s even gotten quite a bit of baby fever as he’s already prepared a nursery and occasionally comes up and rubs your belly when he’s spooning with you at night

But he knows that he can’t have that until you accept that this is your life now and it will be your life for as long as you live…

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

When Garling gets jealous, people die… It’s as simple as that like if someone so much as dares to speak to you while the two of you are on an outing, not both of you, you specifically

Then chances are that unless it’s for something like someone trying to sell you something like a nice smelling perfume or a new dress then will spill blood but he would have still done that if not for the fact that you pleaded with him not to

So when someone does try to offer you something, Garling simply lets out a huff through his nose and warns them to not address you but instead either him or both of you. If the person who offered wants to stay alive then let’s hope that they’re quick with an apology and either a proper repeat of what they said or a retreat

This man does not cope well with jealousy and commonly lashes out without remorse, if it weren’t for you as well then everyone who spoke to his dearest one would be dead as in his eyes

He’s the only one worthy of doing so…

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

Honestly Garling on a good day probably acts somewhat normal around you when in the house like to anyone who didn’t know, you would probably seem like a normal couple like he occasionally seeks you out to have conversations or to try to initiate intimacy but typically he leaves you be

He wouldn’t mind at all if you sought him out to talk about something even if it’s while he’s working on something as he can multi-task when it comes to you

But in public then it would become very clear that he is a Yandere as he doesn’t let you leave his side for even a moment and keeps a hand on you at all times, he keeps up how he is at home verbally but not at all physically

One letter might even talk about wanting to bring you to a nice restaurant so you could finally meet and it’s during that meeting when he tries to be all sorts of romantic with you like he brought you flowers, he holds your hand on the table, every word that comes out of your mouth is like music to his ears even as you’re trying to tell him that this is nice but you don’t want to meet again as you aren’t interested

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Oh absolutely not… Garling has absolutely no problem acting the way that he does with you whether it’s in public or it’s in the privacy of your own home like yes, he does have a reputation to uphold but he doesn’t have much issue showing his true colors in public

Almost everybody knows when you’ve been bad in all honesty as well as on the rare occasion that Garling takes you outside when you’ve been bad, no one is allowed to address both of you as it’s only him plus he’s keeping you on an even shorter leash than he normally does

Like you are practically pressed into his side with how close he’s holding you and if he ever does cut your Achilles tendons then he has no issue with pushing you in a wheelchair when he takes you outside but he’s also has no issue with letting people see the bandages wrapped around your ankles

Granted you could get him to partially let his guard down like by pretending to finally be submissive to him but even that likely doesn’t work as when the day comes that you appear to truly have become submissive to him is when he’s dragging you to the bedroom and trying to impregnate you

In all honesty, that’s probably how you got pregnant with Shanks if this Pre Gods Valley but regardless… There isn’t a thing that you can do in order to manipulate this man as even if you were sobbing and on your knees to at least let you spend five minutes in public away from his side, he’ll say no even if you’re the most hurt that you’ve ever been

There is not a single doubt in my mind that he would hurt you someday like the amount of times that this man has threatened to cut your Achilles tendons is telling enough especially as he has actually broken your legs in the past

Honestly despite how his treatment of you would say otherwise, Garling probably views you as a beautiful goddess to him like something that has more worth than literally anything in the Holy Land

He thinks that you’re something that only deserves to be touched and enjoyed by him, you might not notice when he’s fucking you but he is actually trying to take your pleasure into account when he fucks you

And how far would he go to win you over? Man would probably do quite a bit to win you over like he’s attempting to be quite romantic towards you once he finally has you by dressing you in nice outfits and taking you to nice places (if you’ve been good)

His end goal is to grow old with you after all and he does want to have kids someday but he doesn’t want to do that until you’re fully submissive to him and what’s one of the good ways to do that other than by breaking you?

Honestly, it doesn’t take Garling really that long in any scenario so it’s probably best that if you see a man with red hair shaped into a crescent moon style staring at you then it’s best to just start packing your bags and saying goodbye to your old life whether it was good or bad

Yes. If it truly came down to it and nothing else was working to make you submissive to him as his loving partner and parent to his children then he would have no issue with breaking you

Granted it’s going to take him quite a long time to get to that point but chances are that once that day comes where he finally makes the decision to break you then there’s no going back as he is dead set on this course of action

How views change with time

I used to be the type of Cullen stan that insisted that he must have not known about the abuses, must have been blindsided by the others or something similar, but the one that still tried to hold him accountable for his bullshit. I still think it could be possible to some extent for him to be blindsided by his subbordinates when it comes to more vicious abuses that happened in Kirkwall. But I also no longer think he needed to be blinsided, considering all the things he says. At the time I tried not to take people who speak like him as people who would not react if situation called for it (i.e protect someone from the abuse) or join in on the abuse itself, but now I'm older and I know that talking like that is a sign that he may avert his eyes when he happens to see something he can't reconcile with his views or will try to rationalize it as something that "is ok and must happen" in order to not challenge his views. I've done the same many times before too. Cullen and me are both easily manipulated into supporting bad things. I am often in awe and a bit jealous of Alistair that he was able to see through a bullshit that I was not able to do for years in my life (in regard to church and misogyny I was taught, and many more bad stuff). Hence why I keep comparing them. Cullen is past me, and Alistair is who I wish I was as a child.

It was naive of me to insist that he must have not known. And even if he didn't know, it doesn't excuse his behavior, his words and actions. That's also why I keep saying that DAI is not Cullen's redemption arc. He didn't redeem himself in that game, no matter how much it insists he did. He only started to redeem himself. If you choose to romance him as a mage or any other class you are helping him in that journey. Heck, you can even participate in it as a friend, but as a lover you can have a clear view of everything that is happening. It's not ideal as you should not rely on your lover in the same way you would on therapist, but alas DA world doesn't have any psychologists so it is what it is.

I believe that people like Cullen need others to realize how wrong and bigoted they were. Because I also needed them. There was a time in my life when I was deaf to any voice of reason, just like Cullen was in previous games. At that time nobody would be able to convince us that we were wrong. But with time we were both given the chance to reflect, change and open ourselves to those voices. There is no point talking to people like us when we are not in the place where we can even listen to reason, but we are also a perfect example that some of those bigoted people you know can be reached later in their life and at that time they will need help to properly sort through their bullshit.

Inquisitor and Leliana are perfect for that role. Sadly Inquisitor is not actually given many opportunities to call Cullen out on his behavior (if they're given any). We can only be quiet and encourage him to quit lyrium and even that is not how it should be, because this is not how you handle an addiction. Quitting is necessary for him, because if he doesn't he will still be under influence. And we know that in DA world lyrium makes Templars not only more receptive to the indoctrination after they become the Templars, but also controls them like dogs on a leash and drives them mad, further strenghtening their bigotry. It's not ideal but i's the only way for Templars to become free of the Chantry's influence. Without doing that it's even harder to convince them that mages are not evil beings that were born sinners and will die in sin. Yet even then we have people like Samson who saw through all of it even though the deck was stacked against him. We can't expect everybody to be like Samson who helped mages even before he was kicked out or Alistair who bailed out the first chance he got, but we can hold them accountable, and if possible try to create places where they can heal and unlearn all the bullshit they were fed all their lives. They need it.
