Oh boi it WIP Wednesday.
I'm trying to dedicate myself to posting something every Wednesday even if it's shit and even if I'm scared.
More BSD OC 15-era brainrot, featuring baby Nakahara Chuuya.
I need to make a sideblog for Gwyn tbh.
We’re Kind of Alike, Aren’t We?
Set post 15-arc, just after Chuuya joins the Port Mafia. Lady, having been purposely kept away from the situation revolving around her deceased Father, has only heard Dazai’s version of how the ex-king of the Sheep came to be at the Port Mafia, until her ‘big sis’ Koyo comes to her office with a favour to ask.
“Excuse me Lady-chan.”
Lady lifted her head from the spreadsheet she was frowning over to smile at Koyo as the older woman sailed into the room. As always, the Mafia’s newest executive looked beautiful in her kimono, a calm smile on her face. Working for Mori had done her a lot of good, Lady mused as her superior walked across the rug.
“Good morning, Koyo-san.” Lady rose, giving Koyo a neat bow. “To what do I owe this unexpected visit?”
“I have a favour I would like to ask of you.” Koyo said, settling herself gracefully into the chair Lady kept for visitors. Without speaking, Lady pushed the small tray of sweets she kept on her desk over to the other woman, who gave her a wicked smile before popping one in her mouth. Lady returned to her seat, watching carefully until Koyo finally continued. “We have a new member, as I’m sure you are aware.”
“The Sheep boy.” Lady’s words prompted a nod.
“As someone his own age, I was rather hoping you would help me get him settled in. I can handle his training just fine, but I feel you might have a better idea of the sorts of things that would be of interest to a fifteen-year-old.”
There was a strange glint of amusement in the redhead’s eyes as she said this, and Lady had to wonder what ulterior motive Koyo clearly had.
“Wouldn’t Dazai be a better choice? He’s a boy too.”
“Ah,” Koyo stifled a laugh in the sleeve of her kimono. “Those boys need some time apart to cool off. Theirs is certainly shaping up to be an explosive friendship. And besides, I thought you would be pleased to meet more people your own age.”
Lady leant back thoughtfully in her chair. She did want to meet this mysterious boy that Dazai had been so complimentary about. And having Koyo owe her a favour could be helpful in the future.
Curiosity winning out, she grinned at the executive.
“Okay, Koyo-san. You have a deal.”
“Are you free now?”
Lady looked at her spreadsheet and grinned. Any excuse not to have to do actual work.
“You bet!” Lady beamed, planting her hands firmly on her desk and rising to her feet.
“Good.” Koyo’s smile grew as she stood, offering her arm to the teenager. Lady happily took it, allowing herself to be led from her office. Koyo may be her superior now, but the enigmatic redhead had always been like a big sister to the wayward Port Mafia boss’ daughter, and no amount of change in status was going to make that go away.
The pair walked through the halls, chatting idly about whatever came to mind, until they finally reached a door a few levels down.
“I do hope you two get along.” Koyo grinned, gently pushing the girl to go ahead of her. Lady took in a deep breath - she was nervous despite herself - and pushed the door open, taking a dainty step inside.
At the table in the middle of the room was a red-haired teenage boy wearing a black hat and most of a smart dress suit, the long coat draped over his chair. His feet were on the table in front of him, chair tipped back lazily on two legs. He turned to look as she entered, lifting the hat from his head slightly, and Lady was immediately struck by how handsome the boy was. There was no other word to use despite it not being something you often used for teenagers; Lady recognised in him the same quality she knew others saw in her own face, an innate something that drew the eye. He was clearly still growing, as he was very slight in frame and obviously not very tall. As his eyes, a pale honey brown, locked on hers he raised an eyebrow in question.
“Ane-san, I’m not some pet to bring all your friends to see. I thought we were going on a tour today?” His tone was bored, almost uncaring, but there was a current of resentment underneath the surface that Lady knew well as one that frequently coloured her own voice. She walked over to the table and watched the boy carefully, hands on hips and head tilted to one side.
“This is Lady-chan, the head of the Cyber Crime Division. She’ll be showing you around today.”
“Is this entire organisation made up of kids? Another teenager leading an entire division?” the boy scoffed, putting the legs of his chair back on the floor and leaning an elbow on the table to prop his chin on, making a show of looking Lady up and down. Lady blinked at him in confusion for a moment before even to her own surprise she started giggling. “What’s so fuckin’ funny, kid?” he growled, rising to his feet. To Lady’s even greater amusement, she had been right - he was shorter than her by a good few inches and had to look up at her, a fact that clearly pissed him off judging from the frown on his face.
“Chuuya-kun, mind your manners!” Koyo snapped, but Lady waved her hand dismissively.
“It’s fine, Koyo-san. Dazai was right about this boy, he really is a firecracker.”
Chuuya stamped over to her, an angry ‘hah?’ growled through gritted teeth as he stared brazenly up into her eyes. Lady met his gaze easily, stubbornly refusing to be the first to back down, and she could see a flash of approval in his eyes. She recognised a kindred spirit when she saw one - quick to anger, just as quick to cool, he just hadn’t had her long years of practice hiding it.
“What did that goddamned Dazai say about me, huh? Don’t believe a thing he said!” Chuuya barked, unconsciously mimicking her posture with his own hands on his hips.
“Oh, no.” Lady grinned, “I wouldn’t believe that moron if he said the sky was blue.”
Chuuya blinked a few times, clearly not expecting that response. The pair stared at each other in silence for a few moments before, almost in unison, they both began to laugh. Koyo looked on in stunned silence as Chuuya extended a hand to Lady, which she ignored.
“Nakahara Chuuya.”
“Lady. Sorry I can’t shake your hand, much as I’d like to.”
“Why not?”
Koyo interrupted, sweeping across the room to stand next to the pair of teenagers, her usual composure back in place.
“Lady-chan is an ability-user, like you, Chuuya-kun. Her ability is a guardian who will severely injure anyone who touches her.”
Chuuya raised an eyebrow, which Lady returned with a shrug, not noticing the gleam of mischief in the boy’s eye until it was too late.
“That so?” he mused, before he boldly reached out and grabbed Lady by the hand. Lancelot appeared beside them, prompting a sigh from Koyo and a startled cry from Lady, but before the knight could so much as move he was slammed into the floor with great force. Unable to move under his own weight, the silver-armoured man struggled against gravity in vain until Chuuya released Lady and the supernatural being disappeared.
“Oh, I like you.” Lady grinned. “That ability’s pretty fucking cool.”
“Hell yeah it is. Yours is too. I think we’re gonna work well together, Lady.”
Koyo sighed again, shaking her head.
“I knew you two would get along. I have work to do so if you could please show Chuuya-kun all of the things he’ll need to see.”
“Of course, Koyo-san.”
“Cheers, ane-san. See ya.”
Koyo left the room, and the pair of teenagers looked at each other appraisingly before Lady gave him a smile.
“Shall we begin the tour, then? I’ll take you to see the training halls first.”
They began walking through the corridors, Lady pointing out important things as they passed and Chuuya making vaguely interested noises, his eyes darting from side to side to take as much in as possible.
“Is your name really Lady?” The boy asked curiously as they walked along the corridor leading to the training hall.
“Yeah. And so you’re not surprised by it later, I’m Mori-san’s adopted daughter.”
“Wait, you’re the girl Dazai was babbling about? The one who’s dad was that old coot Rimbaud brought out with the scythe?” Lady nodded. “Huh, so you’re pretty important, then. Kinda weird to be shown around by the boss’s daughter herself.”
Lady shrugged. “I don’t care about rank, and Mori-san knows it. Don’t tell anyone else I said that, though, it’ll ruin my street cred.”
“Fair.” Chuuya snorted before he paused, looking thoughtful. “How old are you, anyway?”
“Fifteen.”
“Oh, we’re the same age.” his eyes lit up. “What is there to do for fun around here?”
“You’d be better off asking Dazai that one. I’m not allowed to leave the building so all I do is play video games and read books when I’m not working.”
“Games? Do you play Laser Fight?”
Lady nodded enthusiastically. “Hell yeah. I’m a Rebecca main.”
“Lazlo for me.” Chuuya grinned across at her. “We’ll have to have a match sometime. Maybe when I can finally get my hands on 3, it came out a few months ago but it’s still so fuckin’ expensive.”
“Oh, I can get you a copy.” Lady beamed. “The boys will find any game you want if I ask them to.”
“The boys?”
“The Cyber Crime Division that Koyo-san mentioned, they’re my squad. We haven’t paid for a single game since we started operations.”
“Nice!”
“Oh, we should have a tournament night! You’d get on well with the guys, I just know it.”
“You’re on. I’ll kick all your asses.” he paused again before continuing. “Y’know, you’re kinda weird by Mafia standards.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well everyone else I’ve ever met from the Mafia has been weird, and kinda shitty. You’re a nice person, what the hell are you doing here?”
“Wait until you get to know Koyo-san a bit better, she’s really nice too.” Lady sighed, casually dodging his question. “Here we are, the training halls.”

analyzing sadism and violence in bsd
this will contain bsd manga spoilers
let's face it; jouno threatening the living hell out of everything on sight is kinda attractive. same thing with dazai and fyodor's murdering spree, and who knows how many people swoon over chuuya being aggressive and gogol tormenting atsushi. because i know i did.
it's funny, right? but it's just fiction so let's call it hot, shall we?
sadism is generally seen in media as an underlying personality trait, in the sense that it's on par with courage, kindness, being stoic and bubbly and such. it's just something that you accept because you assume it's part of the person and it's totally fine to be sadistic. this is where one distinguishes sadistic impulses from sadistic tendencies.
that's why i'm going to be making an analysis that no one asked for of bsd characters and their relationship with sadism and violence.
warning: all the warnings that come with psychoanalyses yk, terrible grammar, not edited, really really fkking long i'm sorry this got out of hand it's over 10k words-
to start, here's the definition from Britannica:
"Sadism, psychosexual disorder in which sexual urges are gratified by the infliction of pain on another person. [...] Sadism is often linked to masochism (q.v.), in which sexual arousal results from receiving pain, and many individuals respond in either role. The sadist, however, often seeks a victim who is not a masochist, as some of the sexual excitement derives from the victim’s unwillingness. The level and extent of sadistic violence may vary considerably, from infliction of mild pain in otherwise harmless love play to extreme brutality, sometimes leading to serious injury or death. [...] Sadism may be a factor in some violent crimes, particularly rape and murder. The term sadism is occasionally used outside the sexual context, to describe individuals who are purposely cruel or who seem to derive pleasure from humiliating and dominating others in social situations. In this context, some milder forms of sadism are relatively more acceptable, such as the use of humiliating sarcasm as a conversational tool."
to break all of that down simply, i'm going to be using a bunch of characters.
(note: it makes mention often of sadism in the sexual pretense, however, it usually bottoms out into "receives pleasure from hurting others". whether this pleasure is sexual in nature or compensating for an emotional desire for feeling, it is still considered sadism.)
Tumblr media
Akutagawa Ryūnosuke
let's start with the man, the myth, the depressed emo
the spineless sadist with undertones of anxiety.
a spineless sadist is defined as following: "They are typically deeply insecure and act like cowards. In anticipation of real danger, they project their hostile fantasies and strike first, hoping thereby to forestall their antagonist and ask questions later. They use aggressive hostility to send the message to others that they aren’t intimidated or fearful, so that they can control their inner feelings and display the exact opposite of how they actually feel. They seek out scapegoats to gang up on, which allows them to assault the exact things that exist within themselves that they want to deny."
if this isn't akutagawa, then i don't know what is.
let's roll back to the beginning of the information we have on him from the very start to understand why power is so important to him.
when he was a child, he lived with about 8 other children as orphans with gin by his side. at some point, these kids heard about information regarding a port mafia shipment, and eventually were killed by the aforementioned, leaving only gin and akutagawa to survive. he went back to get revenge for them, eventually meeting dazai who had murdered all of the port mafia men who killed the children, then offered for the grieving and rage-blind aku to become his subordinate. the wiki describes it best like this:
"In a fit of rage and grief, Akutagawa joined Port Mafia, overcome by a foreign sense of respect he felt towards Dazai."
the reason i love this sentence so much is that it sums up a lot of major points regarding his relationship with dazai; overcome by a foreign sense of respect.
an embodiment of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", his initial reaction when he found dazai must've been something of a shock.
in my interpretation of their relationship, what I would say is that akutagawa has a lingering sense of weakness that he can't shake, not because he isn't strong but because he wasn't born strong. he must look back often on any of his defeats and curse himself over and over again until he reaches the brink of worthlessness in his own mind.
many people say that he's been abused by dazai. yes, but yes. but also no.
akutagawa is a strong individual in a society of strong individuals. in the very beginning of bungou stray dogs, he was mentioned as a warning to atsushi by kunikida. "whatever you do, don't run into this man. and if you do meet him, run for your life," or something along these lines.
i found this interesting since everybody acknowledges his strength, except dazai.
why, might you ask, does dazai not acknowledge him?
part of this is going to be discussed in the dazai section, but it's mostly because akutagawa is no longer looking for something that's attainable.
think of it like a man climbing a mountain; akutagawa has been escalating for his entire life. his scars from his earlier falls still remain tethered onto his body and mind, and he can't get them out of his sight, but he must keep moving up. he must. he can't see any direction but up.
only, he's going up an impossibly steep hill, posing an insurmountable amount of resistance which ultimately lead him to be spending a lot of energy just to stop himself from slipping downwards.
dazai is standing at the top; he sees that the odds are stacked up against akutagawa, but decides not to tell him. in fact, he actually throws a bunch of objects in his general direction as a means to make akutagawa's trek upwards even harder. yes, it would help infinitely if he told aku about his situation, or gave words of reassurance, but either way, it still doesn't help him get to the top that he desires so much.
meaningless analogy? maybe. i feel like we've all climbed a hill or tree at some point in our lives, just for fun. it's fun when you don't fear returning to the base; for akutagawa, this is a pain worse than death.
back to violence though.
imagine you're climbing upwards with all your strength, putting in a ridiculous amount of energy and never resting for a moment, despite having life and the person you respect most working against you.
then this furry fucking pulls up and climbs the neighboring mountain, which has a much more suitable terrain and he's equipped with the latest gear and tech, and your mentor is head over heels for him.
akutagawa and atsushi's relationship isn't something i would personally call "romantic" to all you shin-soukouku shippers, but ship what you will, idc.
all that i know for sure is that akutagawa must feel terrible constantly comparing himself to him, which is why he won't hesitate to to physically injure or challenge him.
he's lashing out because he feels inferior.
he's lashing out because he's projecting his own terror onto others and wants to vanquish them.
he's lashing out because he's trying to seem intimidating, ruthless and his own ideal of perfection.
there's a very good chance that akutagawa feels great while landing blows on atsushi, or any enemy in general, really. but afterwards? nothing. he goes back to feeling inferior and treating his strength like it's not enough, treating himself like he's not enough.
similarly, he displays physical violence when interacting with kyouka, his own apprentice. he frequently acknowledges her ability's strength (not in helping others, but in hurting people). which is terrible given that, once again, he is projecting his own relationship with dazai. just because he wants dazai to call him strong, he decides to do the same. whether this is because he wants to be a better mentor or because he sees himself in kyouka (or both), it's a matter of perspective. the important thing to take away is that he overcompensates for flaws that aren't even his, which is a reason that i believe that he doesn't particularly enjoy hurting anybody after he's realized what he's done. he just likes the feeling of power it gives him temporarily.
he also treats her the same way he would treat his past self. if baby aku and present aku (not the vampire one tho, the alive one) met, he would likely treat himself the same way he treats kyouka; harshly and trying to ingrain this ideology of weakness of heart being equivalent to weakness of mind being equal to being unfit to live. spineless sadists often do this; hide their weaknesses by acting in an opposing way to their true nature.
also, there have been numerous signs that akutagawa doesn't want to be a sadist, deep down, even if he shows he is. he's terrified of appearing weak to others, even if he likely truly wants to be vulnerable with someone, anyone, even himself.
especially himself.
if we were to correlate this with all of his displays of violence, it makes sense. he is the violent individual who is violent to make up for the softness of his heart, which he sees as a flaw.
my favourite part of bsd is the fact that they're linked to real people, so of course i'm going to drag the real akutagawa into this.
he died of an overdose.
dazai kinnie? no. towards the end of his life, akutagawa began suffering from visual hallucinations and anxiety over the fear that he had inherited his mother's mental disorder (his mother was a very important figure in both his life and his writing. in the latter, most women were seen as "dominant" and "threatening", while men were the victims, which makes me think he was likely a victim of toxic masculinity and societal tendencies that required him to be strong.)
his last works were mostly autobiographic in nature, so i recommend reading Tenkibo and Daidōji Shinsuke no hansei for a better look into the man behind the character.
to sum this all up, akutagawa's violence was like a drug, something he'd use over and over again, even if it made him feel like shit afterwards and he knew that he didn't truly desire it.
what he desired was just a pat on the back and "you're amazing, aku" from somebody, anybody at all.
Tumblr media
Gogol Nikolai
"the longer and more carefully we look at a funny story, the sadder it becomes."
if this quote from irl gogol doesn't describe him perfectly, then idk what would.
the machiavellianist with undertones of factitious tendencies
it took me everything in my being not to make this post 99% about gogol because i find his character to be the most relatable and beautiful of all the bsd characters so far.
maybe it's because humans find beauty in the broken things.
gogol's character is mostly based on his desire for freedom, which i think many people misinterpret in so many ways.
but let's rewind.
what is machiavellianism and factitious tendencies?
"in the field of personality psychology, machiavellianism is a personality trait centered on manipulativeness, callousness, and indifference to morality."
to put it simply, it's rather similar to psychopathy. however, there's a fundamental difference on many levels. they are both part of the dark triad (along with narcissism) and refer to a branch of psychology that is morally inept, those who are most at risk of committing crimes, regardless of whether they feel remorse or not afterwards.
whereas psychopathy says that "violence is power", don't know how to deal with others' emotions given that they themselves can't feel much and don't feel the difference between right and wrong; machiavellianism says "violence is necessary", are emotionally calculated and know the difference between right and wrong, but fail to acknowledge it.
so, clearly gogol is machiavellianist, right?
wrong.
he is living in a lie that he fabricated for himself, which is where the factitious tendencies come from. factitious disorder in and of itself is a serious mental disorder in which someone deceives others by appearing sick, by purposely getting sick or by self-injury.
very little is known about this mental illness due to the amount of deceit regarding it, but most agree that lying about your physical and mental health is done to receive sympathy.
based on my knowledge, i believe that they most likely lie in order to gain acceptance from themselves, whether sympathy from others is a medium in order to achieve it or not.
now, why would gogol want acceptance from himself? he's hot af and could rip this 🅱ussy in half any day of the week 😍😍😍
sorry. back to being serious. (that isn't to say i wasn't serious when i said HE COULD RIP THIS-)
gogol seeks freedom, this is the most evident thing that has been mentioned explicitly in the manga and is canon.
but freedom... from what?
here's an excerpt from his conversation with atsushi:
Tumblr media
In another scene, he explains the following: "Yet, Dos-kun was different. He said, 'Splendid. In opposition to god, you are fighting to lose sight of yourself'. It moved me deeply. He was looking into my essence. Dos-kun was the one person in my life who understood. My intimate friend. That's what I thought. And then I realized..."
first off, all of this is kinda gay bro.
second, i love what fyodor said. "you are fighting to lose sight of yourself".
remember the factitious undertones to the sadism? yeah, that's it.
gogol feels things. he feels guilt when he murders and hurts others, he feels empathy enough to decide to let his victims die in a somewhat sparing way (meaning he let them believe he was insane. somehow, believing that you're being killed by another human being rather than a monster who is out of their mind brings peace to us. humans are such odd creatures.) in short, he feels things. he is not a psychopath. he is not entirely machiavellianist, even if his actions say he is.
back to the initial question. what does gogol desire freedom from?
he wants to be free from his emotions.
one theory i've seen somewhere, which i agree wholeheartedly with, is that he said he wanted to kill fyodor because fyodor represents his empathy, in a way. this is someone who understands him, who he considers his "close friend".
whether you ship or not, there's an undeniable connection between the two characters. it's sort of like when you drop out of school to join a gang; wouldn't it be better to start fresh? to remove all the remnants of the old days?
now, all that's left is to cut off him off from existence.
one question i have that i can't answer in a rhetorically intelligent way is why the fuck would he want to take away his humanity?
if someone sees their humanity as a restraint, something that keeps them from flying off with their own wings, don't you think it would be safe to assume that there must be something so terrible that scares them off, like birds flying off a tree branch as soon as they are shaken or they hear a loud noise, like a gunshot or a scream?
gogol likely desires to have control over his emotions. since emotions are uncontrollable things, he decides that he'd much rather be rid of them.
these restraints, these limitations to his freedom, so to speak, are just further proof that he's trying to convince himself of something. he's taking "fake it 'til you make it" to the extreme.
he wants to be able to murder people without having a mask on. he wants to be unburdened by empathy and sadness. he wants to live a life in which he isn't truly living.
this draws a beautiful parallel between him and dazai, but i'll get into this later on.
for gogol, violence is an escape. he feels great thinking about it, he feels great hurting others, and he feels great afterwards.
at least, he wants to feel that way.
(which is contradictory; does he want to feel nothing, or does he want to feel no empathy? in my opinion, he wants a little bit of both)
he's a clown, really. he makes us laugh and presents playfulness while tormenting atsushi. however, he isn't just a joker; he's a person behind his mask too. this is why i started by saying that he's a sad story hidden behind a funny one. once you truly get to know him, you realize that there's an emptiness in his soul. a dead soul.
for this reason, gogol suffers a lot, in my opinion. more so than the majority of bsd characters, which is already a lot. he has a hollow heart that craves to be whole, which in turn craves to be unbreakable, causing him to display a hollow heart. he's layers upon layers of lies to the point where he can't tell if he genuinely enjoys violence or not.
as someone who struggles with a similar loss of truth on a daily basis, I can tell you that it's more terrorizing than feeling pain flat out, it's like a shadow creeping out of your closet. if you knew for a fact that it was nothing, you could sleep soundly or tell yourself that it isn't real. if you knew that it was a person, you could react adequately; but what would you do if you don't know what it is? you can't sleep but can't lay awake, constantly second-guessing yourself until you've gone totally mad. for gogol, this "shadow" is a representation of his emotions, and he can't be at peace so long as he can't tell what's going on. no wonder he'd want it - whether good or bad - gone, for good. he'd finally be free to be at peace with himself and the world.
now, linking it to the real gogol.
Nikolai Gogol's greatest and most renowned work was Dead Souls (funny, isn't it? what he has and/or what he desires most is a dead soul) in which the main character ran around buying dead people in legal terms in order to get money out of it. he was a con man, that Chichikov, a faint resemblance to the bsd version.
Funnier still was that the book has no ending.
He burnt it.
A priest (some people argue that he had fallen in love with said priest and that he was undoubtedly gay) told him that his second volume was sinful and that he should destroy it.
If I had to relate this to the character, i would say it shows two things about gogol;
he still has a moral compass, a sense of what is right and what is wrong; he will listen to others and by listen, i mean truly listen to what they're saying, and then take in consideration their words. (personally, i'd've wished he told the priest to go fuck himself and walked away so that i could read the end >:( )
second, he isn't attached to his work. after spending sleepless nights, days upon weeks upon months writing a book, would you throw it out as easily as that? i don't think i would. does this mean he valued that priest's opinion a lot? or did he maybe desire to display his detachment to reality, that he was perfectly capable of discarding the item and moving on with his life? to convince himself that he was capable of doing as he willed, not as his emotions willed?
i guess we'll never truly know.
Tumblr media
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
the mass murderer and terrorist. i wonder how he made it onto my list.
the enforcing sadist with undertones of narcissism and psychopathy
god i love talking about fyodor.
he's often reduced, just like his fanon bff gogol, to a shadow of himself. "stinky anemic rat with a god complex".
can't say i don't love the slander as well, but he's so much more than that.
when gifted with superhuman abilities, most people wouldn't say "ew this is gross, god wouldn't allow this so it's time to go murder everyone and sabotage society".
however, he's not like other girls ⛓🥀🖤👨‍🎤
OK I PROMISE I'M DONE NOW I THINK BACK TO THE POINT
fyodor is not a full on psychopath, people.
get this in your heads before i make an entire post dedicated solely to explain why he's not a psychopath.
first of all, psychopathy is a SPECTRUM. we all have a little psychopathy in us, and it's not particularly a terrible thing. fyodor may rank highly on this spectrum, but he is predominantly lenient towards narcissism
psychopaths care little about their own prosperity and have trouble sticking to long-term relationships and plans, which partially explains his inability to take care of himself. but idk fyodor, i don't think you created your plan to wipe out all ability users in the world overnight. his lack of self-care could very well be the product of something else, a lack of energy from his anemia or a disregard for his own health in the face of his goal.
this doesn't mean he doesn't fit a lot of the criteria; he lacks empathy for others, is emotionally calculated and doesn't burst out in rage or sadness.
...which ends up being countered as well. if he were a true psychopath, he'd be a lot less surprised in the end of season 3 when he got caught; instead, he'd've shrugged and been like "oh". he equally would probably not derive pleasure from something small like classical music and playing the cello.
he also leans towards narcissism; he believes he is the only one destined to do this. i see him as being emotionally equivalent to the main character of Notes From Underground; he has this blatant belief that he's better than others and knows that he thinks he's better than others.
from this reason, i've been going back and forth between "he's a psychopath", "no he isn't", "yes he is", "what if he was a narcissist?", "SHUT UP I'M DEBATING WHETHER HE'S A PSYCHOPATH OR NOT! "
it's the same tale in his relationship with violence and sadism; he doesn't feel empathy for his victims. i doubt he thought about bby karma a single time since killing him. he lives in the grey area between "i don't care, period," and "i am the only one who is allowed to kill them because i'm the chosen one so it's okay if i don't care."
the enforcing sadist is another term i've thrown into there. enforcing sadists tend to be people with other authoritative functions who feel they should be the ones controlling and punishing people who have broken rules, regulations or laws, which immediately signals narcissism.
i find fyodor's religious view important as well, actually. you might've overlooked it, as has most of the fandom, but he often says "sin" and mentions god when discussing his virtues and motives.
you'd think a religious man would be just a TAD bit less murderous.
fyodor believes his violence is justified, though, which dehumanizes the victim for him.
he sees the crime, he inflicts the punishment.
everything he does is for god, or his beliefs, so why wouldn't he enjoy it?
in current society, religion is being given less and less importance. back in the time and location of irl fyodor, however, it must've been big, explaining why he mentions it.
he is actually the only one who mentions his devotion to god frequently out of all the bsd characters.
why, why? that is the question, why the devotion?
some people stick to religion because of culture; others because they were forced to by their family; a select few because of instances of inexplicable moments occurring in their lives that drive them to seek answers in the skies; not to forget the majority that stick to it because they believe.
fyodor believes. boil it down to "communism" if you will, but he likely believes in the equality of all men. or maybe, he just sees power as untrustworthy in the hands of "mere mortals" (i agree, and so do tons of past philosophers. even socrates criticized democracy because it gave power to idiots and educated people alike, which is why i think fyodor might believe this as well)
unpopular opinion: fyodor is incapable of genuine happiness.
i believe he might experience brief schadenfreude (enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others), but accomplishing things just go through his head.
everything goes according to plan, and then he makes another plan.
it's a way of surviving, but not of living.
he has a deep character that is dumbed down to a genius, but where's the beauty in being a genius?
geniuses lack this fundamental connection to other people because they're often considered beneath them. this is the same with dazai, who can't emotionally connect because he knows he won't be understood, which in turn makes him belittle their value.
so, does fyodor fit the bill for a sadist? does he enjoy hurting others?
i don't particularly think so.
he just hurts others because he "has to", and doesn't feel much during, before or after it. perhaps to say he doesn't feel much is going too far; i'm sure watching others squeal and squirm under his grip inflates his sense of self-worth and self-importance, but very limitedly.
a particular point i'd like to make was when fyodor "removed feeling from Ivan's brain". sir, how the fuck did you do that. part of his ability? perhaps. in that case, it's very plausible he used it on himself.
now, onto irl Fyodor.
he was a philosopher on top of writer, and is no stranger to death. if i recall correctly, his wife and children died during his lifetime (he remarried though, partially to get out of his financial debt), and was arrested in 1849 for belonging to a literary group that discussed banned books critical of Tsarist Russia, he was sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted at the last moment. he spent four years in a Siberian prison camp, followed by six years of compulsory military service in exile. yikes. that's bound to expose you to a nasty part of humanity, which was evident in his writing and books.
The House of the Dead has a lot of information on this. In the first few chapters especially, MC discusses how terrible it is to be in isolation and how it can drive a man mad. if you want to read a dostoy book, check out Crime and Punishment, but if you're going for a closer look at his life, that is the book to read.
so, prone to violence? no, not necessarily. but he's been around it and has seen what it does to people, all the terrible things that exist. (read his books btw they're so nicely written, dark but there's trickling beauty in his darkness)
tl;dr: he's a stinky anemic rat with a god complex

Teruko Ōkura
child with anger issues.
jkjk i love her she's so pretty like pls step on me
the explosive sadist with severe mood swings, potential borderline personality disorder (?)
the question mark next to bpd was very much intentional.
now, it's pretty obvious why i included this, given her apparent mood swings. she goes from threatening everyone in the vicinity to sucking up to fukuchi in a split second.
(very small side note: i believe her attitude towards fukuchi needs more attention. why would she be so obedient towards him in contrast with every single person she meets? i have a small theory that she might have some kind of a past with him that mirrors yosano's with mori, that she was recruited for her ability/talent by fukuchi and it actually went well. eerily so. @ asagiri, gimme answers ho 👹)
back to her violent nature.
an explosive sadist is described as "those who are prone to losing control, known for being unpredictably violent. this manifests through tantrums, fearsome attacks on others, especially family members, and uncontrollable rage."
there's a but.
1) let's not kid ourselves, she's a queen and she deserves praise. when you put aside her personality and attitude, she clearly has some strong ideals under that terrorizing expression. what needs to be emphasized is that she doesn't hide her ideals under her sadism, like nikolai, nor does she use this mask to protect her true thoughts, like dazai.
her sadism is directly linked to her belief in the goodness of society.
it's really amazing how well this was displayed in the manga, and frankly i'd like to see more of it, but she had a moment, right before kicking the shit out of sigma, where she was being genuine in her explanation of the hunting dogs and her belief.
"Without order, people 'built for violence' would end up standing above the population. A world like that would be garbage. Therefore, if the Hunting Dogs exercise the strongest power as society's servants… We are searing the flames of order into our own selves."
she explains that she and the hunting dogs go through monthly surgeries to maintain their superhuman bodies.
why is she explaining this?
to make it perfectly clear how strong she is
part of her sadism comes from a domineering sense of superiority that she displays frequently. she is allowed to threaten jouno and get away with it because she is strong and could very easily kill any of them, or damn well torture them out of their minds with a flick of the pinky.
most strong bsd characters either don't think they are strong (akutagawa), overestimate their strength (fitzgerald, sigma) or are perfectly content letting their actions prove their strength to others (most of them, such as dazai, fyodor, mori, chuuya).
what makes teruko different is that she constantly reminds everyone of her wrath.
if you're so pissed all the time, just kill someone? wouldn't that be easier than constantly threatening everyone around?
clearly, it's not all bark and no bite. she does bite, and she bites rather hard. no, the reason she threatens everyone is because she has a faint trace of superiority that she enjoys.
sadists typically enjoy being in control. for teruko, she likes to see other people cower before her, once they've gotten over the initial shock of her age/personality. afterwards, she makes it painstakingly clear that she could kill them at any moment; that's what she loves the most about violence. yes, she may enjoy it during the moment, or perhaps afterwards looking back, but she loves the foreplay of the violence, if you will. she likes riling them up and asserting dominance over this person before physically destroying them.
i believe this is the reason she explained herself as a hunting dog to sigma. she didn't have to give her mini speech, but she does anyways. she shows him that he's severely overestimating himself, that the "desperation" he regards as his biggest strength is in fact just a daily part of life out in the real world.
after gouging out her ear to avoid his attack in chapter 76, this is what happens:
Sigma: "Do you see, hunting dog? This is it! Everything I've attained here, the strength of my feelings!"
Teruko: "...'The strength of my feelings', you said? Then, I'll ask... Why do you feel? When the one carrying that strength of feeling is you alone?
(yet another side note: i won't be analyzing sigma, but i would like to insert a small remark here. contrary to fanon sigma where he's baby and anxious all the time and we should protecc, he's actually so much more violent in canon. he tried to get innocent civilians to fight against the hunting dogs, a very dangerous unit, basically jeopardizing their lives just to save himself and his casino. he pulled teruko down with him in order to save the casion, basically trying to kill her (he did try to straight up kill her multiple times tho). desperation and anxiety makes people a lot more violent than we give them credit for, so no, sigma is NOT baby. more like a temperamental toddler that could very well ruin your life.)
this brings us to our second point:
2) she believes her violence is motivated. notice how she singled out Sigma because of the fact that he operates alone?
evidently she takes great pride in her cause with the hunting dogs, despite all of the sacrifices she's made to reach her current level, i.e. physical endurance and alterations.
so, the satisfaction from violence, for her, stems from the feeling of accomplishment and duty, not the actual pain. when she explodes and threatens people, it's more likely a side effect of living in the kind of dangerous environment that the hunting dogs operate in (if i were a child battling with some of the strongest adults in the world, i'd make sure i make my mark, too. in a competitive world like this one, you have to fight for your spot and maintain it, which is also a reason she gave that speech to Sigma, she's known desperation too and finds it insulting that he believes he can reach her strength with that alone).
here i'm supposed to talk about irl Teruko but it's criminal how little information there is about her.
if someone finds something, let me know please!

Mori Ōgai
his description should include child abuser.
the tyrannical sadist with undertones of psychopathy.
before i start, i need to clarify a very important detail.
i don't endorse mori's actions, he is a pedophile and that is disgusting. however, his entire personality isn't just that, and for that reason i'm going to be analyzing him objectively. if mentions of pedophilia trigger you, skip this section because i will be mentioning it often.
out of all the bsd cast, he's the most likely to be a psychopath.
i'd absolutely love to see more Mori content. not where he's traumatizing children though, more like his backstory.
the abuse that affected dazai, akutagawa and kyouka, as well as most port mafia members and yosano all started with him. he's ground 0, yet there isn't a reason for his behavior.
since we can't see the past, let's work with what we have
mori is greatly detached from emotions, both his own and others'
he's ruthless. he treats death like a game. he hasn't shown any specific scenes in which he demonstrated raw emotion, which is where my conclusion that he ranks very highly on the psychopathic spectrum stems from.
his calmness is eerie. in his first appearance, he was trapped in Anne's Room and did not once panic. he remained calm when he discovered tachihara was a double agent, when akutagawa failed in capturing atsushi he said that "effort is what matters, results come second".
which is crazy, when you think about it. after all, he'd killed and manipulated such a large amount of people, yet he doesn't take failure of his subordinates to heart? why could that be?
easy.
he doesn't have a heart.
I don't often like decreeing that, since there's usually a story behind the heartlessness, and eventually some kind of soul under all those layers of trauma, but plain as day, Mori sees violence as nothing more than violence.
it hurts people. when hurting people is advantageous for him, he hurts them. when hurting people is not advantageous for him, he doesn't hurt them.
it's simple; the epitome of reasoning and logic without emotions clouding your judgement.
he prefers manipulating children because they're simply easier to control than adults whose ideals and personalities have, for the most part, already matured.
he is a tyrannical sadist, where forcing his victims to cower and submit gives him satisfaction. but he's not even that sadistic; sadism is, as i said before, deriving pleasure from other people's pain. Mori's pleasure is indirect; he doesn't necessarily like inflicting the pain (nor does he dislike it), he likes seeing the aftermath.
The aftermath being; brainwashed people and children who do everything he says; getting held in either high respect or high fear (sometimes a mix of both) by those around him; achieving his goals, as he did for yosano's arc where he forced her to heal soldiers and eventually mentally broke her, and being able to get the port mafia to thrive.
Another thing i want to mention when it comes to his tendency towards violence is that he rarely implements it directly himself, likely because this is logically the least advantageous of many options. he prefers, such as in the case where he leaked naomi and haruno's hideout to the guild. he didn't even have to fight anybody, and lessened the port mafia's workload by having the ADA and guild fight each other.
and in the end all he had to do was say the right words to the right person in order to ruin everybody else's lives.
the few times where his implication is direct is, unfortunately, when dealing with children. as seen with elise, his literal ability who conforms to what he wants her to be (meaning that he makes her bratty because it legit gives him sexual satisfaction what the actual fuck-) aka a bratty child who rebels against his orders.
just like dazai and yosano
in yosano's case, he did in fact break her, but this was in a different environment than dazai. they were in war. his goal was to demonstrate how useful ability users are to warfare, and she just happened to be a slightly bratty, naive girl who had a strong ability and no sense of what awaited her. he quite literally picked her up from the bakery or wtv where she worked and said "you have to heal all these dying people, who will be sent into battle and then come back to be healed once again". she was set up for failure, and i'm certain mori was aware of this. but did he care much? partially, for he doesn't like failure, but mori doesn't dread failure too much. if it happens, he moves on, just as how he came back for her after a while when she'd gotten taken in custody and said "get in loser we're going shopping" and invited her into the port mafia. she would've, had fukuzawa not came in and intervened, which makes her in a way somewhat lucky.
for dazai, this is a bit more complicated. he is very similar to mori in his actions and thinking, but is emotionally a fundamentally different person. mori knew that they were similar, and that's what scared him the most; fyodor had a similar approach, saying that dazai was the only person whose mind he "couldn't read", aka that he was unstable and unpredictable, which is what essentially caused controlling him becoming very difficult for mori, especially as someone who has trouble understanding emotions. he prompted oda to go take down mimic by leaking the information about the orphans, knowing fully well that oda would likely die. what he didn't expect was that dazai would react to his death by defecting, not delving further into the darkness. mori knew that dazai's intellect could very well one day be his undoing, and for that reason paid him special attention. however, it's still very difficult to deal with dazai, for reasons i'll get to later on.
i think his attraction towards children stems from a pleasure in seeing them raw. adults and older individuals are usually more self-conscious, constantly trying to prove to themselves and others that they're strong. mori knows how to deal with them because their emotions, their thoughts, their actions are so painfully predictable and easy to manipulate.
children, on the other hand, are much more brash and often think themselves the center of the universe. they have character, they have more unpredictable emotions, and when they get emotional, they get mf emotional. he sees this as both a challenge and a convenience; they're easy to manipulate, much more desirable to change the essence of a person when they're young, yet they still provide that futile bit of resistance, a characteristic shown often in the young girls which he preys on (yosano, elise)
however, he isn't 100% psychopathic.
he has goals. he respects certain people (natsume soseki). he is still capable of somewhat understanding other people's emotions.
therefore, mori's relationship with violence is complex, but down to the basics? he thinks it is power and uses it when needed, not excessively or anything though. he's a remarkable man, that i have to admit, and gets shit done, at the expense of everyone else around him's mental stability.
now, onto his irl.
his relationship with elise is, obviously, a demonstration of Mori's relationship with his daughter, Mari, who was also an author. he died when she was only 19, but afterwards she wrote extensively about her relationship with her father. Starting with her 1961 novella, A Lovers' Forest, she wrote tragic stories about love affairs between older men and boys in their late teens which influenced the creation of the Yaoi genre, stories about male-male relationships, written by women for women.
that last bit had little relevance lmao i just wanted to share that with someone.
he had to suffer through the war, which might be the reason why the bsd character is so prone to strategic intellect, but he was in fact also very talented, being an army surgeon, translator, multilingual and a writer. i respect the irl counterpart for his hard work, but clearly he had a questionable relationship with his daughter so NVM-
Tumblr media
Jouno Saigiku
the literal canon sadist.
the presumed psychopath who is in fact just your everyday sadist.
i won't be spending too long on jouno because his psyche isn't actually as complex as one can believe.
he's the product of his upbringing; sort of the same way as when, as a kid, you slowly learn over time certain things. for example, if you want candy, you have to ask an adult nicely for it, say please and thank you, and that you have to be polite about it, if you cry and throw a tantrum you won't get the candy.
jouno was trained to figure out that if he wants candy, he can just take it.
it is mentioned that, before becoming a hunting dog, he used to be a criminal executive, which is where his belief in doing wrong stems from. as he explained it himself,
"I just want to hurt people in the name of the law, corner them, and hear the sound of their destruction. […] I am a public evil. No matter how many criminals I torment, society will only give me praise and success for it."
this is 1) proof that his sadism stems not from a lack of emotions or a desire for certain emotions, but it's simply the way he was brought up. if a strong individual finds out they can take everything they want by force, who's to tell them that they can't? 2) he doesn't gain particular satisfaction from hurting others, he's simply indifferent to it. it's what he knows how to do.
for example, when interrogating the civilians, he didn't hesitate to showcase his strength and, most importantly, how unregulated it is. he could beat them up or kill them if he wanted to, the only reason he didn't was that tecchou was there.
i don't believe that he sees anything inherently wrong in his behavior; he knows his actions are wrong morally, but they're praised in society, so does that truly make them wrong? nevertheless, he still has a moral compass, as was demonstrated when he declined fukuchi's offer to join the decay of angels.
so, a bad boy? not really. jouno was just bred to value ruthless actions and keeps it as his modus operandi due to habit. he's a good man, though, and I would very much trust him with my life.
for his irl counterpart, once again there isn't much info on him.
from what i know, he was a gesaku writer, which is a school of Japanese literature that is basically playful, mocking, joking, silly, or frivolous, all alluding to his personality. like i said; nothing exceptional about his sadism. it's just fun and games, and it's harmless. in this case, i would classify it as sadistic tendencies rather than sadistic impulses.

Dazai Osamu
the one and only suicidal maniac
(whose relationship with death is rather intriguing, but i'll get to that later)
the machiavellianist who just wants to feel something.
first of all i need people to STOP saying they kin dazai as if it's their only personality trait. i'm going to repeat this a thousand times because i physically cannot keep reiterating this to everyone who claims to be a dazai kinnie
he is more complex than simply being suicidal
in fact, i would go so far as to say that he isn't truly suicidal. but i'll leave that for last, because isn't death the epitome of violence?
there's also a significant difference between the three "phases" of dazai, if you will; dazai before he met chuuya, dazai before odasaku's death, dazai after odasaku's death
as you can notice, the three segments of his life are not revolving around an important event, but around people.
that is the first sign that dazai has empathy and emotions, thus is not a psychopath.
similarly to gogol, he is a machiavellianist: (recap for those who don't remember, machiavelleniasm says "violence is necessary", are emotionally calculated and know the difference between right and wrong, but fail to acknowledge it.)
where he and gogol differ is their desire for emotions.
dazai wants to feel something. gogol wants to feel nothing.
dazai welcomes pain. gogol wants to be rid of it.
dazai is fighting against his past to become a better person. gogol is fighting against his past to become a worse person.
now, for that last segment, dazai isn't necessarily trying to become a better person, per se; and gogol isn't trying to become worse. the former is simply attempting to embrace his emotions more often, while the latter is trying everything in his power to get rid of his.
now, how does this play into his relationship with violence?
notice how the machiavellianist says "violence is necessary"? that's a key point; dazai doesn't feel good about his violence. pre-chuuya, he obviously felt nothing about hurting others, nothing with a hint of catharsis. as shown in the gif above, he's shooting that man over and over again, even if it's not necessary, which is where the slight catharsis comes into play.
however, it doesn't truly let his emotions out. it's a bit like self-hypnosis, you get into a groove and cannot stop because there's something trance-like in the way that he keeps shooting, over and over again. it's something he has control over. it's something that is simple. it's something that doesn't require emotional strain.
dark era dazai, on the other hand, doesn't have that erraticism of his younger counterpart. if you will, his relationship with violence matured; he doesn't use it excessively.
it is during this phase of his life that he most resembles mori.
after odasaku's death, everything changes (a large amount of analyses about why this is have been written. I recommend going to check those out because I won't be talking about why his view of the world changed, but what impact it had on his sadistic tendencies).
dazai no longer sees violence as the only way.
but it's still an option.
something that can be pointed out as a factor of how much importance he attributes violence is how often he puts on his mask of being a goofy, laid back individual.
you see it around 15 when he teases chuuya; yes, he's broken. yes, he commits a lot of murder. but he doesn't hurt the children. he doesn't have this cloud of darkness that follows him everywhere he goes, unlike dark era dazai, for whom silly moments are much less frequent. then, there's ada dazai, who is simply always in the mood to annoy kunikida.
it's a pretty accurate rep of how sadistic he is because dazai is unable to feign happiness.
(a quick reminder that happiness and light-heartedness are two distinct things.)
dazai can act carefree, but he cannot act genuinely alright. there's a subtle difference between the two, and for that reason they've been mistaken for each other on many occasions.
when dazai is light-hearted, he somewhat enjoys the violence, meaning that he doesn't mind it. it's simply a part of his day and doesn't affect him.
when dazai is happy, he avoids violence. he will get someone else to do the dirty work, and even then he'll chose the most pacifistic solution.
unlike some of the other characters, dazai's emotions does not rely on his violence, but his violence relies on his emotions.
to put it in another way, how much pain he's willing to inflict is based on his mood, which is the opposite of, for example, akutagawa who attacks in order to repress his fear and feel better about himself (sadly, it doesn't work).
onto akutagawa, who was the victim of his abuse.
aku felt respect for dazai's machiavellanism. he looked up to this man who was (or at least appeared) indifferent towards violence and said, "i want to be like that".
in turn, dazai saw aku as a sort of toy to play with.
it's a power that he wanted over his own emotions, but was unable to get. so, he decided to mimic his desire but over someone else's emotions.
it's a basic sadomasochistic tendency; to project yourself into another person and take control by hurting them.
he dissociates from the world, and views it all as if he himself is no longer a human, and then takes a certain pleasure of tormenting this other person as if he were tormenting himself. it is for that reason that he is violent when light-hearted; light hearted is a façade, a mask he puts on in order to hide the fact that he feels empty.
dazai's emotions are a beautifully complex thing and it just breaks my heart when i tell people about him and they say "oh yeah, that's the guy that's suicidal right??"
if he truly wanted death, he works in a pretty dangerous field and could go out. he has no family holding him back and with the mindset he has, he might believe that all his friends don't care about the real him, just the "dazai show" he puts on. so really, nothing is stopping him.
that's where his boredom comes into play; while in Meursault, he told fyodor that at first it was fun, but now he was getting bored and they should start to think about getting out.
this also applies to his mood swings, and hence his violence.
dazai gets more sadistic when things become dull.
or, inversely, when he himself begins to fall into a mind melding routine. you see, dazai hates the idea of letting his feelings settle among the dust. instead of, as many millennials might opt to do, curl up into a ball and act lethargic and listless in your day to day activities, thus worsening your mental state by doing nothing to stop its decline, dazai actually decides to shake it up. it keeps him alive and allows him to continue to teeter on the thin tightrope he created for himself out of fleeting moments of energy, hovering over a vast expanse of a field of death and despair to which he nearly succumbed several times.
i won't be drawing the comparison between dazai in the anime and irl dazai because there's so much to unpack and he's an emotionally complex character. so, go read No Longer Human and tell me yourself what you think!!

Fukuchi Ōchi
literally everyone hates his guts. enforcing sadist as well as spineless sadist all mixed up into one cocktail of major dickhead.
woah woah, let's slow down there, did i just classify him as the same type of sadist as.. aku??
give me a second. I'm getting there, sheesh 🙄
i'm going to be putting personal hatred for the man asides, because I think a lot of people immediately label him "dickhead" and forget to understand him first, just as with Mori.
Fukuchi is a war hero. he went to the same academy as fukuzawa and things were great... until he enlisted in the Great War. he saw and was forced by the government to torture women, children, men and all other genders and eventually couldn't take it all, began harboring a hatred for the government for creating this disgusting war.
it was all he ever knew, war. he came to believe he was "born on the battlefield".
here's an extract from the bsd wiki to show what kind of change happened afterwards:
Despite these facts, 12 years ago, he was invited to the opening of the Armed Detective Agency where he drunk himself silly, caused a ruckus, and urinated all over the newly made Agency doorplate which Ranpo saw and was disgusted by. Despite the shameful actions, Fukuzawa interpreted them to be a sign of grief and wailing that he had found his life's purpose one step ahead of him and that he was lonely because of that fact. It was on this day that Fukuzawa told Ranpo that he trusted Fukuchi more than anyone in the world, which reinforced Ranpo's trust in him based solely on blind faith alone, while Fukuzawa was completely oblivious to his friend's hatred and bitterness towards him.
after that, he created the hunting dogs and amped up his battle, fighting all kinds of huge threats and eventually becoming Kamui from the Decay of the Angels.
i don't blame him.
if you look at it from an objective point of view, Fukuchi is, just as Fukuzawa suggested, a grief-stricken man. he saw death, experienced it, caused it; death was all he'd ever known.
there are two ways to react to that, to crave light dearly but still enclose yourself in the darkness, as Kyouka did.
or, you can rebel against it all.
tachihara rebelled against his family, nikolai rebelled against his emotions, akutagawa rebelled against his fears. fukuchi is the same, only he rebelled against the goddamn world, and that isn't an exaggeration.
circling back to violence, fukuchi isn't a particularly violent individual. i wouldn't say he loves it, nor hates it. he himself is a erratic person in terms of hygiene and shame, doing borderline disgusting things such as throwing up from drinking too much, farting, flat out saying that he's still young because his ass cheeks are still fucking peachy.
these are all coping methods
when you start to belittle the value of life of others, your own seems to be less important as well, in certain senses. his pride, his image, they all don't matter in the end; he's still a tool of murder.
now, for someone who is so against war, he seems just a little too eager to start one.
he's been praised all his life for his skill and ability, his ego must be huge at this point. with all this power, why wouldn't he think that he's the only one fit enough to fix the world? the book is a very powerful thing, and he believes himself in charge of it, and thus the entire globe.
he clearly doesn't spend too much time dealing with his doa subordinates (fyodor is about to fight to the death and gogol who orchestrated this is literally waving his hand in the air and asking sigma to get him popcorn). this is a sign that Fukuchi sees them more as tools, and he doesn't even need them all that much.
he's a hypocrite. an enforcing sadist who believes he's the only one who is allowed to kill thousands in order to bring world peace, yet he hates war. a spineless sadist who is lashing out at the universe because, as Fukuzawa pointed out, he's lonely.
The guy is really just lonely.
It's the saddest of all the bungou stray dog characters' stories, in my opinion. Not because it's tragic, or because it speaks to my heart, but because he'll never have a happy ending, nor will he have a happy middle.
He's a sad old man who keeps digging himself deeper in his troubles with the very same violence he hates, and I think he knows it; but he's too deep in, now, to see the sunlight.
and for what is he digging this hole? why does no one tell him that he's not mining for gold, but digging his own grave?
And when he dies eventually, ruler of the world or not?
No one at his funeral would truly know him.

bonus: Tetchō Suehiro
the loml.
the pacifistic soldier who, despite his job, still desires to protect those with a good heart.
I find that tecchou needs to be given more screen time in order to better appreciate and understand his character because I personally believe that there's a fundamentality of strength of beliefs needed in order to achieve the diligence that he exhibits.
first and foremost, we have no information on his backstory, which really makes me mad.
when fukuchi went through war, he decided to dominate the world and kill thousands. when jouno was in a crime organization, he came out believing that violence gets praised in this society. when tachihara suffered the loss of his older brother and constant belittlement from his family, he became extremely erratic and chaotic.
then there's this gorgeous fucker.
i'm certain he's witnessed plenty of death, some of which might've been his fault, due to his line of work. yet he is firm with jouno when it comes to protecting innocents?
i frikkin love him.
but there's something i'm missing.
let's take kunikida as an example. he sticks by his ideals with an almost comedic grip, never ceasing to believe in doing good, even if it costs him his life.
the reason? partially because he's failed before in saving people. (unpopular opinion; kunikida deserves more unconditional love. the guy has a heart of gold, whereas his bratty and murderous partner with a tainted soul gets all the love.)
now, is that the case with tecchou? what could possibly have made him despise violence and cherish good people so much?
i don't have an answer for that and i'm currently writing a 10k word essay to asagiri to demand an explanation/hj
now, my first instinct was to think that it had something to do with his weird habits and tics, especially with food and concentration.
i quickly discovered that i was a clown, not that this was new information.
The name Tetchō means 'Iron Stomach'.
haha, very funny, asagiri.
what i do value the most out of tecchou's character is how simple he is. he fights for what is right, takes down what is wrong, and is efficient. he trains to get stronger, he eats the food, he watches the ants, there's nothing more complex to him, which is where the beauty of his personality stems from.
on top of this, his soldier-like personality is just a clever allusion to irl tecchou's samurai lineage.
perhaps sometimes there truly is nothing to analyze. for this reason, i'm not going to be complicating the character.
he has a wonderful design and i hope to see more from him, perhaps an outburst of emotion (since he's been rather emotionless ever since he was introduced. not like dazai or fyodor, but like he's got nothing going on in his mind and he really just doesn't give a single shit about it) once he discovers that fukuchi was a fraud.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- there are, of course, many more i did not mention, and i could go on and on forever about each individual, but these are the biggest names that have enough information about them up until now and as good of a summary that i can provide. i would've loved to include agatha as well, but she hasn't appeared nearly enough, and verlaine, but i haven't done enough research on SB. would yall want a part 2 with any specific characters??
a quick reminder that all of this is purely my own interpretation of the characters. feel free to discuss this further or point out any mistakes i may have made, i love to hear other people's opinions!! also, this has been done for leisure; i am not a psychologist and cannot diagnose any of these characters with anything.
bungou stray dogs is perhaps the anime that spends the most time talking about the characters' mental state in a somewhat realistic way, and for this reason, i've grown to love the fandom so much that i pulled this unedited rambling out of own ass to try to contribute to yall 😩💗 ly, stay safe and have a nice day :)

Yandere Dazai headcanons
I realized that, like Chuuya, I never did a set of yandere headcanons for Dazai! So, here yall go! I hope you all have fun seeing how I think Dazai’d behave as a yandere.
Dazai as a yandere doesn't heavily change from how I imagine his character.
Whether it's subconscious or not, he can be pretty manipulative, and when he's a yandere, that side of him is amplified.
He enjoys being in control.
He's the strength of a soggy leaf when it comes to fighting, so he relies on causing psychological damage to keep you in line.
Dazai would bug you to keep tabs on what you say and eavesdrop onto conversations with your friends and family.
He uses this to determine who you can keep in your life, and who he feels must be cut out to maintain the level of control he has over you.
Despite the fact that Dazai isn't the strongest, if you do end up figuring out his trickery he will resort to physical violence to keep you from storming out or leaving him.
He will covertly belittle you to ensure you don't feel the urge to leave.
He will gas light you without hesitation.
His time in the mafia from such a young age has obliterated his ability to really feel guilt, so if it's not completely gone, it's pretty hard to make him feel bad for his actions.
Emotional manipulation, drugs, poison, he usually goes for less physically taxing methods of controlling you.
Even when you're finally done with his bullshit, Dazai's silver tongued enough to talk you into talking it out, maybe over dinner. That's when he'd dose you with a drug to knock you out so he can lock you away.
He won't really ask you for a double suicide, if he can keep you alive, he will.
While Dazai would expect you to remain loyal, he doesn't offer that same kindness to you. He will flirt, seduce, and ask others for death.
He will do so in front of your face and wouldn't hesitate to turn the situation against you and gaslight you once again.
If you somehow manage to escape, it wouldn't be for long. Dazai still has connections in the mafia, and strings to pull, so he can easily get you back before you get too far.
He might have a small breakdown if you left him.
He will kill for you. Whether that is people around you, or actual threats to you, it doesn't really matter to him.
If all else fails, he'd attempt a double suicide with you.
If he’s forced to kill you at all, he’d try to join you. He won’t pass up on the chance to attempt a double suicide.

Recap: Adam met Chuuya and the flags for the first time in the billiards bar. Despite misunderstanding each other, they resolved the misconception and played billiards cohesively.
Albatross was impressed by how skillful Adam was in playing billiards. 'It was all physics and calculations,' answered by Adam. The android once again introduced himself to the crowd, and revealed his favourite things were acorn and grass seed, and things he hated were metal detectors in the airport. His dream is to create an investigation organisation that was solely run by machines because he saw humans irrational hence incapable in carrying detective missions.
Piano Man replied that he still could not trust Adam because he was afraid Adam would leak the information of the Mafia to his own organisation. However, Adam promised that his mission was only about arresting Verlaine, and he would not interfere with anything further. Chuuya disagreed because he thought Adam was lying.
'It is impossible that Verlaine is searching for me,' said Chuuya
'Why?' asked Adam
'Because Paul Verlaine is dead.'
Chuuya recalled the Arahabaki incident one year ago. It was all about Arahabaki, the artificial ability created by the military. In order to get this top secret, Two European spies took on a mission to steal Arahabaki, and they were Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. They accomplished their mission perfectly. However, Paul Verlaine suddenly betrayed his partner. He attacked Rimbaud, and took away Arahabaki by himself. The battle between the spies, who were also super ability users, were intense, which they created a scene of battle with mass destruction.
As a result, Rimbaud won and lived, but he lost his partner. As being a super ability user, this battle caught the attention from the military. Rimbaud was chased after by the authority and he had no way out. As Rimbaud was already very weak after the battle with Verlaine, he had no choice but to absorb the ability that he just stole, which was Arahabaki itself. As a result, it became Verlaine's ability - to abilitify humans - he broke the seal of Arahabaki. It was a form of ability that was beyond human capacity, and was as if it were the beast of god. The military tried their best to seal the Arahabaki. Afterwards, a huge black flame burnt everything, regardless of the military, laboratories and all the surroundings. Rimbaud was the only one who survived under the protection of the ability, but he lost his memory in return. Rimbaud then joined the mafia and used 8 years to recover his memory. In order to fully recover, Rimbaud baited Chuuya - the true Arahabaki - to appear, so that Rimbaud could absorb his ability. That's the course behind the Arahabaki incident one year ago.
Rimbaud was then dead, because he lost to Chuuya.
'No, Verlaine was alive,' said Adam. Piano asked for the proof but Adam said he did not want to leak the top secret to anyone apart from Chuuya. Chuuya said that it was fine to brief the information with them all because Chuuya considers the Flags as related personnel. The flags were touched because they were surprised by how Chuuya considered them as his companions. Chuuya wanted to take back his word because he was embarrassed.
'I will follow your order,' Adam took the opportunity and he grabbed Chuuya under his arm as if a piece of parcel, and hopped away from the bar instantly. Adam was holding Chuuya and hopping, flying in between the residence area. 'I also want to be holded like that...' Doc was watching Chuuya leaving with Adam and whispered.
-
-
'Why are you holding me that way!?' Chuuya said furiously. 'You can put me on your back or just take my hand, there are many ways!'
'I am terribly sorry,' Adam said. 'This is the best way to transport you according to your size.'
'Imma beat you ass up! I am still growing!' shouted by Chuuya.
Chuuya used his ability and they were landed in an abandoned Church that was formerly destroyed in the war, and he had a call from Piano Man.
'Are you alright Mr Parcel? Have you got your stuff delivered yet?' Piano Man sounded very happy.
'I am fine,' Chuuya replied.
Piano Man told Chuuya to finish his business ASAP because the boss was asking them to come for a meeting. Chuuya replied and the conversation was over.
Adam proceeded briefing Chuuya what had happened. He showed Chuuya a photo which was taken during the coronation in the St. Paul's Cathedral in London three years ago.
The photograph displayed three collapsed soldiers in the Cathedral whom were murdered. The men brought no sword with them, no blood, no gunshot were found either. Those men were laying on the floor as if fell asleep, but it wasn't, they were all dead.
Adam said that these three soldiers were the close bodyguards of the Queen, and belonged to the Order of the Clock Tower. One of the soldiers once destroyed an organisation in one night, so they were meant to be very powerful and difficult to kill, yet they were all killed by Verlaine. There were no external injuries found, but their bones were broken down to 1228 pieces at the same time. Chuuya was shook because  Adam said it was practically impossible to do so.
The crime scene occurred during the coronation, and it was suspected that the Queen was also the target. Fortunately, the Queen was safe, but the reputation of the Clock Tower was severely damaged.
The Order of the Clock Tower was meant to protect the Royal Family, and their guard is unbreakable because their ability users were on the level of the Transcendents as they could create a subspace, and this was where the Royal Family were. Hence an assassin would be killed back right away if he attempted to assassinate the members of the Royal Family. Therefore, Paul Verlaine almost became the most dangerous man that would threaten world security. That's why Dr. Wollstonecraft sent Adam to take a new approach to investigate this incident, and that new approach is Chuuya. Adam knew Verlaine was searching for Chuuya, so Adam thought it would be efficient to come to Chuuya before Verlaine arrived, and then he could arrest him.
'So basically I am a bait?' asked Chuuya, and Adam admitted.
Chuuya refused to assist because he thought even if Verlaine was going to kill him, he would be able to handle it. He then left Adam because the 'Mail Man' from the Mafia was already waiting for him. Adam didn't let go of Chuuya and kept following him. Mail Man, in general terms, were responsible for sending messages between the Port Mafia, as well as acquiring intelligence for the organisation. The Mail Man was wearing a black hat and sunglasses, which had his face covered. Adam was still chasing after Chuuya.
'Please don't go, Chuuya-san!' shouted Adam.
'Hurry up!' Chuuya went inside the car and told the Mail Man.
'He is Verlaine!' shouted Adam. The Mail Man then accelerated the car and got away from Adam.
-
-
Chuuya tried to punch the man but it was unsuccessful.
'You are lighter than I thought. You should eat more or else brother will be worried,' said Verlaine. A battle broke out inside the car. Under Verlaine's gravity control, Chuuya could not breathe as his lungs almost collapsed, and he was gradually losing his consciousness as blood was deprived from his brain.
'I don't recall having a European brother...' said Chuuya
'You are wrong,' Verlaine replied, 'I am neither an European nor a human. I am just like you.'
'No!' Chuuya struggled with his ability.
Chuuya insisted that he was a human who grew up in a farm by the sea because that's what his friends showed him, but Verlaine rebutted that it was just fake information fabricated by the military. Suddenly, Adam hacked the handle and turned the car left. The car was then crashed with a truck that filled with fuel nearby and created a mass explosion.
'Humans are mistaken for the word 'lonely',' Verlaine said, 'they know nothing about the true form of loneliness. They thought not having a family or a person to chat with means loneliness.'
'The real definition of loneliness,' Verlaine proceeded with his soft and gentle voice as if singing, 'is wandering in the universe and watching the shooting stars alone inside the vacuum under absolute zero. There is zero possibility that you will be founded by anything or approached by anyone. Thousands years passed and you will still hear nothing. Can you comprehend this feeling? No one can, except you, Chuuya.'
'Please come with me, Chuuya,' Verlaine offered his hand to Chuuya. Adam urged Chuuya not to go.
'Indeed, I understand what you mean,' said Chuuya. 'Before I answer you, I wanna ask you something,' Chuuya proceeded.
'I just had a call with Piano Man, and they said that they were told to have a job. Answer me. Where did those five people go?'
Verlaine laughed, 'I assume you don't need your old friends anymore?' Verlaine opened the trunk in his car, and there's something inside with a sloppy sound. Chuuya's eyes zoomed out.
It was Lippmann's corpse.
Chuuya screamed. He lost his control. He kept punching the broken pieces in the surroundings and moaned and shouted. Verlaine grabbed Chuuya's neck, and found a photograph in his pocket and threw it away.
'There's no way I will like you. Absolutely,' Chuuya's voice was shaking.
'That's fine, because you will choose to follow me at last, and now I will now show you the evidence.' Verlaine used his other hand to cover Chuuya's forehead mildly.
Space was shaking, and there was a mass explosion. There were black and red flames appearing in front of Chuuya.
Tumblr media
'Let's open 'the door' by a little bit,' said Verlaine.
'High energy with Hawking Radiation detected,' Adam splitted out the words by default. Adam targeted his bullets on Verlaine's eyebrows, eyeball, throat and arm, but Verlaine stopped the bullets and targeted Adam back. Adam was in pain utterly.
At the same time, Chuuya screamed violently as if losing his soul. A hell occured, it's the black flame. It was exactly the same flame that appeared in the Suribachi City. The high energy melted the surroundings, including all the buildings nearby. There was a black sphere, and Chuuya was in the center of it. He was in pain as you can observe his rupture on his skin, the almost-breaking eyeball and the collapsing organs. Such high energy even distorted the time and space in that area.
Yet, there was a person, standing next to Chuuya. A person with black coat and covered his face with bandages.
'Can you please die more neatly?' said Dazai.
Dazai grabbed Chuuya's wrist, and Chuuya had the ability nullified. He gradually lost his consciousness and closed his eyes.
-
-
Chuuya roughly remembered that Dazai carried him on his back and brought him to the billiards bar. When he woke up at the bar, Chuuya sensed something smelly, it's the smell of blood.
He went inside to the bar, and found Piano Man, Ice Man, Albatross and Doc were all dead. The bar was in a mess as if stormed by hurricanes. He saw Doc's body was separated, and couldn't even find his lower part of the body.
Chuuya then found Albatross with a final breath left. He was relieved when Chuuya found him. 'I will be dead soon,' said Albatross, 'Chuuya, take my bike in my garage, it's all yours,' and that's the final word of him.
'I am going to help you,' Chuuya told Adam with determination, 'I am going to find him, but don't arrest. Kill him.'
'Mafia will not forgive anyone who kills my family.' - - Code:01 Ended

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
it was difficult to be in the mafia without spilling blood. after all, it was what the job entailed. just like everyone who joined the port mafia, you had been accepted because of your skill in eliminating targets. you always did so quickly and oftentimes mercilessly. more than a few times, mori himself had gave you solo missions to specifically assassinate unneeded targets.
and yet, you hated having to kill. you hated that from a young age, it was the only way you ever knew when it came to surviving the world you lived in. after being orphaned, you were immediately taken in by a criminal syndicate and trained to be an assassin before eventually joining the port mafia. as much as you tried to outrun this, you gave in and grew apathetic to your job requirements. ‘just do it as quick as possible, forget, and then move on,’ you told yourself during every job.
that was until you had met chuuya nakahara.
well, it’s not like you had met him for the first time there at a local bar. everyone in the port mafia knew about the young, mafia executive with the powerful gravity manipulation ability. in fact, you had worked under him on a few assignments. despite the reputation about his temper, you found him to be quite level-headed when it came to leading your group and making difficult decisions on the spot. there was a side to chuuya that was a bit caring too and he always checked on everyone after a mission. sometimes, you’d even watch him remove his hat in respect when a fallen mafioso was reported.
“nakahara-san,” you were about to get up and bow when he waved a hand, signaling not to.
“you don’t need to do that. we’re not at work,” he scoffed, sitting on the bar stool next to you. “this is my first time here. recommend anything good?”
you were surprised at his casual-ness, especially since he was technically your boss too, but you answered his question nonetheless. “well, they always have really good whiskey.”
“can’t go wrong with that then,” chuuya said, requesting the drink from the bartender. “so, you’re l/n, right?”
“you... remember my name?” you blinked in surprise.
“i mean, you have worked for me. what kind of a boss would i be if i didn’t even know your name?” chuuya raised an eyebrow at you before sipping from his drink.
“makes sense,” you shrugged. “it’s just that you happen to be the first.”
“you’re also the one koyou ane-san spoke highly of,” chuuya added. “although, i heard you turned down her offer of a promotion.”
“i’m not really in great need of money,” you reasoned. “and besides, it’s pretty much the same job content anyway but i’d have to do more things.”
“well, the doing more things part you got right,” he chuckled, downing his glass before ordering a refill. “although, i get the feeling you have another reason for turning down that promotion.” chuuya looked at you expectantly and you felt as though you’ve underestimated his intuition just a bit. you looked down at your half-empty glass and sighed.
“i don’t really like being in the mafia. i’m good at my job but, i don’t care much for it, nor do i think i’m particularly good at anything else. in the end, i just feel like i’m being used?” you shook your head and laughed. “sorry, i know that sounds terribly pathetic.”
“if you don’t like something, can you really help it?” chuuya pointed out.
“i thought you didn’t like people who chickened out?” you dared to tease him.
“that’s not the same as chickening out,” chuuya wagged a finger. “because you still do what’s being asked of you.”
“fair enough.”
“i don’t know if this helps but, you’re pretty good at tying bandages too,” he said, puzzling you slightly. “one of the doctors at the infirmary told me that tomura-san wouldn’t have made it if you hadn’t stopped the bleeding quickly.” chuuya downed his second glass of whiskey before placing it on the counter and paying for his drinks. “just some food for thought,” he added, before getting off the bar stool and leaving you alone.
...
whether or not chuuya had intended it, his comment did get you thinking quite a bit. you did have good knowledge of the human body, thanks to your assassin training that taught you which were the best points of the human body to strike. the port mafia boss himself was also a doctor, so who’s to say that killing people and saving lives were separate forms of knowledge.
slowly, you began to pick up on chuuya’s way of reinforcing that idea he had initially planted. when you were put in missions with him, he’d often order you to help patch up the wounded, even encouraging you to take your ‘patients’ to the infirmary. there, you’d intently watch the nurses and paramedics do their valuable work. at times, you wondered if you were really of use because you were no longer in the front lines but chuuya reassured you that what you were doing was more than enough.
finally, you decided to file in a request to transfer to the medical department. it took quite a long time for it to be processed, since you knew that you were still valuable to the organization as an assassin, but you managed to convince the higher-ups of being able to work as an on-site paramedic who could also defend themselves in the front lines.
after being accepted, you went to your usual bar for a celebratory drink. it didn’t come as a surprise anymore to see chuuya already there, waiting for you.
...
aside from holding up his reputation of being a powerful member of the port mafia, chuuya also wanted it to be known that he was a leader his subordinates could trust. ‘what’s the point of mistreating them if you know they’re ready to lay down their lives to follow your orders?’ chuuya would always reason. he wasn’t one to dote, but when he knew someone wasn’t exactly working at their very best, chuuya took it quite seriously.
you had already caught his eye the first time you worked with him on a job. there was nothing to complain about when it came to your skill. in fact, chuuya was particularly impressed with how cleanly and efficiently you eliminated your targets. it’s just that the expression on your face, one of boredom, caught his attention just as much. it almost reminded him of his own. sure, chuuya loved fighting and the adrenaline rush he got from it was like nothing else. but at one point, he had grown tired with knowing that he would win anyway no matter what. it was why he decided to put on his gloves and refrain from using his fists.
at first, chuuya was mainly concerned with what was bothering you so he took a page out of dazai’s book -- which wasn’t something he wanted to particularly confess to -- and decided to coerce you a bit into doing something that would interest you. it wasn’t fully manipulative though, because chuuya genuinely knew you were quite good at the new skill you picked up and he could see you enjoyed that more.
then, he noticed that there was an inarguable gentleness to you. chuuya happened to read your file out of curiosity and learned about your past being trained as a young assassin. he felt a bit sorry that a different life was robbed from you and was therefore even more motivated to help steer you down the path you wanted more.
chuuya was genuinely happy that you had joined the medical department but he did find that he was seeing you less and less. you joined a few more missions as a frontline paramedic but spent most of your time in the infirmary. it was only after it hit him that he was missing you that chuuya began to realize maybe there was something else underlying his intentions.
he didn’t like chickening out of anything but that also meant he shouldn’t chicken out with facing his feelings. chuuya couldn’t come see you at the infirmary because he never got injuries. instead, he decided to meet you again at your favorite bar, the place where he first met you for real.
this time, he came with a confession. and so did you.
...
the first thing you noticed when you opened your eyes was the ringing in your ears and the dust that had seeped into your lungs. you blinked that same dust from your eyes before sitting up in a panic when you realized what had just happened. according to the higher-ups, the port mafia was going to be engaging with a very powerful enemy organization and you and your fellow paramedics and nurses in the infirmary were expected to be working all through the next few days. you were prepared as the bodies came flooding in and you just hoped and prayed that the fight would be over.
you had just finished stitching a particularly ugly gash when you heard an explosion from within the infirmary. and then, the screaming, and then, it occurred to you that the enemy had done the unthinkable.
there was rubble all around you and you struggled to get out but thankfully, you were still in one piece. but as you looked around what used to be an operating room, you realized the extent and gravity of the damage dealt. the enemy had just bombed a hospital. it wasn’t just port mafia members they were treating there but yokohama residents who had unfortunately been caught in the crossfire. sure, you were part of a mafia and used to be an assassin and you did kill people. but there was no dignity in bombing a hospital.
rage flooded you as you walked around the ruins, your eyes picking up the ugly sights of what was left of the survivors and those who were terribly unlucky. and above all else, there was a terrible sadness. if you were in the frontlines, would you have prevented this?
...
chuuya’s blood ran cold when he heard the news about the infirmary being bombed by the enemy, enough to bring him to use his fist to finish off an enemy before sprinting over to where he had heard the explosions. the enemy had dealt a low blow and chuuya wanted nothing more than to finish everyone off. along with that anger came a feeling of fear that almost blinded him as he sprinted off to where the explosions came from. you were working in that hospital. if anything had happened to you, there’s no telling what chuuya would do in his anger.
only, he quickly realized that you weren’t in danger. meters away from the hospital, still dressed in your lab coat, chuuya found you with a scalpel in each hand, killing enemy attackers. only, you weren’t just killing them. chuuya could only assume it was rage that consumed you as you straddled an enemy’s corpse, driving your scalpel repeatedly into his face.
“y/n!” he cried, grabbing onto your wrist before you could bring it down. slowly, you turned to look up at your lover. the rage in your eyes quickly turned into fear as you looked down and saw what you had done.
“i... i’m...”
“that’s enough, y/n,” you heard chuuya say softly behind you. you dropped the scalpel and looked down at your shaking hands.
“maybe i could have stopped it,” you said shakily. “i should have been on the frontlines. i just want to help people and even now, i couldn’t even do that.” chuuya watched as you covered your face in your hands.
“what am i even good for?”
he knelt down in front of you and pulled your hands away from your face. you turned away from him.
“i don’t want you to see me like this.”
“nothing can change what i think about you,” chuuya said seriously, turning your chin to look at him. with a deft hand, he removed his gloves and slipped them over yours. “all i know is, nobody is born with hands that are meant to kill.”
you looked down at your now-gloved hands and then up at your lover. he smiled and pressed a kiss to your forehead.
“i’ll be heading out now. do what you do best, okay y/n?”
you returned his smile and nodded with renewed determination. “alright.”
...
you’ve always known about chuuya’s powerful ability and prowess in martial arts, but it was only after you got together with him that you learned about your boyfriend being the arahabaki. at first, you thought it was pretty cool, until you saw the pained expression on chuuya’s face as he talked about how he never really knew why he ended up connected to the arahabaki in the first place. because of his memory loss at a young age and with his terribly powerful special ability, chuuya often felt that he was inhuman.
‘maybe... that’s why he chose to help me,’ you thought, as you watched the vulnerable expression on his face that he only showed around you.
that said, you’ve only heard about the sheer destructive ability of Corruption but because chuuya only used it in the most dire of times, you’ve never really see it for yourself. that is, until now.
you could tell that chuuya was no longer himself with the markings that covered what was visible on his skin and a grin that stretched across his face. he only activated Corruption when he knew dazai was there to stop him but it just so happened that right now, he was out of reach: floating in the sky while hurling gravity bullets around him.
“y/n,” dazai called out to you. he was heavily injured but somehow still standing. “you’ll get hurt if you stay here!”
“i need to help him!”
with a loud explosion, chuuya dropped back down to the ground, causing the earth to cave in a circle around him. he turned with his sights set on you.
“chuuya,” you backed away slowly, terrified by his empty gaze. “it’s me, y/n! you can snap out of this!” you pleaded.
“y/n!” you heard dazai yell again. he was running towards chuuya from the other side of the forest clearing. “get out of here, he--”
you couldn’t hear the rest of what he said because with a wave of his arm, chuuya sent you flying backwards until you hit a tree before crumpling down to the ground. you felt your eyes fall shut just as dazai sprinted the last few meters to touch the back of chuuya’s hand.
with his ability nullified, chuuya fell to his knees. his body was wracked with pain from having used Corruption longer than he knew he should have. he felt dazai fall to the ground behind him and turned to find that he had promptly passed out, most likely because of the blood loss from his injuries. ‘so that’s why he couldn’t stop me quicker,’ chuuya thought. it was only after he scanned the ruined area around him that he found your crumpled form lying under a tree.
it couldn’t be.
“y/n!” he cried, hauling himself to his feet despite the roaring pain in his body. he hobbled over as quickly as he could over to you before lifting you in his arms. “y/n?” chuuya called your name again. with a groan, you stirred back into consciousness.
“you’re... back,” you smiled up at him.
“fuck, i’m so sorry. i did this to you, didn’t i?” chuuya shook his head, feeling his hands tremble as he saw your injuries. “i’m so sorry.”
“you weren’t yourself.”
“i could have stopped myself, somehow!” he exclaimed. “i shouldn’t have let you come along on this mission. i shouldn’t have used Corruption.”
“chuuya--”
“i don’t want you to see me like this,” he hung his head. despite all his strength and connection to the arahabaki, chuuya was still human. and you didn’t care if you had to spend every day reminding him of that.
“you’re human, chuuya,” you said softly, lifting your hand to his face and turning it to look at you. no one else would be able to see the sheer emotional vulnerability on chuuya’s face as you said those words. only you could make him feel this way. “i wouldn’t be what i am now if it weren’t for you.”
“are you really sure you want this... that you want... me?” chuuya asked. you smiled, sitting up to brush your lips against his.
“i’m sure.”

thinking about chuuya realising his feelings for an s/o who's originally someone to be recruited into the mafia per mori's orders. apparently, they happen to be the hopeless romantic type, and mori thought of exploiting that so chuuya wouldn't have to through the trouble of unnecessary conflict. it starts with mori paying people in your workplace to treat you like shit. if that doesn't get you to quit, he'll pay your higher-ups to fire you. you'll feel like shit, and that's chuuya's cue to start sending either gifts or a fresh bouquet anonymously regularly, sometimes with a small love letter attached. the icing on top of the cake would be to hire assassins, where the gravity manipulating mafioso will swoop at the very last minute to save you. it was solid plan that should end with you being head over heels for him, or at the very least inticed by the idea that if you join, he can offer you the protection you need. what he didn't expect however, was for fate to pull an uno reverse and make him head over heels for you too.
the way your face lit up when you first received his gifts, your cute satisfied smile after rearranging the flowers left at your doorstep, the giggles/chuckles that would spill out of your mouth when he includes a particularly cheesy note. giving you gifts didn't feel like an obligation anymore, neither was its sole purpose to butter you up—he genuinely enjoyed seeing your reactions, to which he also used as an indicator to recognize which gifts you liked more than others (don't be surprised if the item appears more often later). when his mind isn't preoccupied with anything in particular, it'd almost always drift to you (he wonders what you're doing a lot). he even went as occasionally following you (from a safe distance, ofc) during his free time, making sure you get to your destination safely.
the realisation hits him like a truck: fuck, he thinks, after finding himself subconsciously smiling at your laughter as you spoke with one of your friends. he didn't know or when exactly it started, but one thing's for sure: by the time he's aware, he was already in too deep. when the time comes for him to save you from those assassins, before the recruitment, you can expect a confession first.
whoa there mori you piece of shit you 😆😆 the first thing that came to mind while reading this is that mori’s methods are very yandere-like here. as loyal as chuuya is to the mafia, i think he’d actually have some internal conflict with being a part of your manipulation, as he holds a certain dislike for underhandedness and dishonesty (in personal relationships, at least). i’m not exactly sure how that would factor into this oneshot but i can’t with good conscience imagine chuuya being completely okay with stealing your heart by ruining your life first.
that said, what a fucking plot twist—your work life is going sideways for no good reason at the same time you get a secret admirer. he saves your life and you feel some semblance of debt towards him, only to eventually find out that he is no savior, just a charming player in cahoots with his scheming boss. i wonder if he’d break the news to you, and when? along with his confession? or would he stoop to mori’s level (withholding all the behind-the-scenes planning) because he can’t afford to lose you and hurt the mafia’s prospects? a lot to chew on...

Chapter 4: Everyone, Say “Thank you, Clover”
The group was delayed before the first store was even in sight. Why? Dazai nearly died... from a nosebleed. On the way they’d passed a shop displaying the type of lingerie Dazai loved. One look at that and a glance at Robin was all it took. It worsened when Robin bent down to see if he was alright, tilting his head up so he’d have a better look. He was an angel sent from heaven in his eyes.
It was no surprise his partner knew what had caused the sudden gush to happen and reaction to it, a deep sigh as he brought his hand up to cover his eyes, head shaking like a disappointed mother. The same went for his other three subordinates, an awkward cough from Akutagawa while Gin and Higuchi exchanged a look. However the reaction he received from Clover did surprise him.
Everyone was surprised at how quickly Clover warmed up to Chuuya. None of them could come up with an explanation. A gust of wind blew off the executives hat on the way and Clover had jumped up to catch it. Akutagawa and Robin were dumbfounded seeing her not shy away from Chuuya’s head pat. Soon after that Dazai had seen Akutagawa bend over her shoulder to ask her something. He had a feeling it was along the lines of why his girlfriend was already comfortable being around the short redhead. A stumped look appeared on Clover’s face at his question. Akutagawa gave a simple nod to whatever the answer she gave him, accepting it without questions.
It was obvious befriending Clover was a must from watching the siblings interact. Their bond as siblings was just as strong as the Akutagawa’s, maybe stronger. The trouble was though she wasn’t warming up to Dazai, at all. Any attempts of starting a conversation ended with her hiding behind one of the others. Getting the shy girl to open up was going to be a tough battle, or so he thought.
Seeing his nosebleed worsen after looking at her brother all uneasiness vanished from her sapphire eye to be replaced by curiosity. She no longer found the mafia boss intimidating, but continued to keep her distance. Dazai pretended not to notice the younger’s glances, head tilts, and stares she gave him. It wouldn’t surprise him if she knew he was purposely being oblivious though. He knew his mentee was smart enough to tell his lover what job occupation he had before getting into a relationship. Clover would definitely know Dazai was the boss, Akutagawa wouldn’t address him as that if he wasn’t.
“Oi,” a poke from Chuuya brought him out of his thoughts “hurry up and ask him.” the unwelcomed nervousness returned. “Isn’t it too soon?” Dazai hated the way his nerves acted up so much whenever it came to Robin, the feeling was alien to him. “Shouldn’t I make friends with Clover first? I definitely will have to eventually, she is his top priority right now. You see it, right Chuuya? I wouldn’t want to rush things! Furthermore-” a tug on the sleeve of his coat stopped the flowing of excuses falling from the brunette mouth. Dazai scared Clover with how fast he turned to face her. She would have jumped up again if Akutagawa hadn’t put his hands on her shoulders.
“A-ah, I’m sorry!” he quickly apologized when he saw her shrinking away. Taking notice of cat ears now resting flat against her head, he put on a bright smile to come off as less intimidating, “I’m not used to having my clothes tugged on, you caught me off guard.” the ears had vanished the moment she saw his eyes, but he was not taking any chances. Better safe than sorry.
“What can I do for you, Clover-chan?” Dazai added a cheery voice to his smile, putting on his mask to hide the annoying nerves that had been pegging him all day. In the corner of his eye could see her tail entwined with a sliver of Rashoumon. “She’s sharper than she presents herself to be.” he thought seeing her tail tightened when he put on his mask “it’s probably best to be careful when she’s around.” His thoughts were confirmed when her lips pressed into a thin line after he upped his mask level. Dazai toned it down after that, but only enough to let the nervousness be seen. He made a mental note seeing Clover relax slightly when he did.
“Is there something you can’t reach? I’ll get it down, just show me where.” Dazai used a milder voice this time. He was pleased to see Clover’s tail loosen slightly but it didn’t surprise him when it tightened again. Clover played with her hands, opening and closing her mouth trying to find her voice. Akutagawa removed one of his hands from her shoulders. The other stayed as a silent reminder he was there. After a squeeze from him Clover found her voice. “U-um,” her voice was very fitting for her personality and appearance, soft and quiet. It was very cute. “Ro-Robin can-can’t afford to buy m-me a som-something and a su-suit for h-him. He w-won’t l-let you bu-buy him one w-without…” she reached her limit.
Clover scurried to hide behind Akutagawa who didn’t bat an eye finishing what she started, picking up where she left off immediately. “Robin spends nearly all of his time either studying or doing small jobs to earn some extra cash for Clover to go out. There are… complications that keep Clover from getting a job as well, and he’s too stubborn to accept money for no reason.” he glanced back at his girlfriend continuing when her grip tightened on his jacket “to put it simply, you’re compatible and she’s saying go for it.” “I heard my name~” perfect timing “what’re talking-” no time was wasted. Dazai took the students hand in his as he knelt, all nervousness gone like before.
“Robin, will you listen to this lonely man’s woes? The position of my job occupation requires me to attend many business parties every year, and I dread having to go. Every party I attract the attention of ladies there. Though they are lovely ladies and I do not mind making small talk with them, they keep making moves on me. There have been occasions where benefits which would have served us well were lost thanks to unloyal wives trying to hook up with me. It is so tiring having to tiptoe around their advances and being flirted with every other minute, but after meeting you this burden may finally be lifted off my shoulders.” cressing his hand, Dazai gave him the smile that has won the hearts of many. “Robin, will you do me the honor of accompanying me as my date to the party?”
“Can’t.” Robin pulled his hand away. “I have classes and work, I can’t skip either. Plus I don’t have the money to buy both of us an outfit.” he gestured to his sister. Rubbing his neck awkwardly, an apologetic smile formed on his lips “I appreciate the invite though.” Dazai could hear his hope and excitement shatter. Until he noticed the couple had been joined by Gin and Higuchi not far off behind Robin. The girl's were waving their arms trying to get his attention.
When they had it, Akutagawa slightly leaned down so Clover could whisper in his ear. Summoning Rashoumon, he used the demon to make characters for Dazai to read. ‘Tell him you’ll pay for his suit.’ they read. “No, I can’t accept that.” Robin immediately denied the offer while Rashoumon simultaneously morphed into a new message, ‘offer a job. Ah, she’s a clever one. Now knowing where this was going, Dazai signaled them to stay on standby and took the reins. They nodded and Rashoumon vanished. Dazai made a mental note to give them a few days off as thanks and to also invite Clover to lunch.
“I can offer you a job to replace your old ones. I’ll pay you more than what you made before.” Robin quirked an eyebrow, eyes now cautious “and what would that be?” “it isn’t anything difficult, I just want you to be arm candy.” Dazai reached out to take his hand the third time that day. “My job requires me to do mountains of paperwork and report reading everyday, and almost every week there is a boring meeting I must attend or one of those exhausting parties.” he heaved a dramatic sigh. “I’m bored and lonely, having no one to keep me company in my dark office. But then I met you. Just being in the same room with you brightens my day. It would make me the happiest man alive for you to accept.” he kissed his hand. Robin stared down at him processing what he’d just been proposed with, a faint pink blush forming once he had.
“I- um- well, it’s a nice offer- I don’t know- it’s like-!” he began stuttering, looking away flustered. “I don’t think I’d be satisfied with getting paid to-” he stopped mid-sentence feeling Clover give his back a poke, her face stone cold. “H-hey Clover,” with an uneasy smile, Robin turned to face his sister “what’s up? Did you find something you liked?” she didn’t reply, only stared at him unblinking as the air around her grew heavy. “What, are you worried about me? I’m fine, don’t worry.” ears out, tail lashing “I like the jobs I’m doing, they keep me on my toes.” eye shifts to become more feline “plus I spend every class sitting, I’d get restless from doing that at work too!” Gin and Higuchi join her with closed eye smiles, adding to the peer pressure “don’t forget I do my assignments on my breaks, so, um, yeah that’s a thing!” Akutagawa came to stand behind them, switching to mafia mode to max out the intensity.
“Fine, fine! I yield, I yield, you win.” Clover withdrew her feline features with a smile. Gin and Higuchi high fived without looking at each other while Akutagawa turned off mafia mode with a cough.
Robin sighed, “this is what you’re getting yourself into, I hope you’re ready.” “I’m very aware,” Akutagawa let out another cough “there have been many occasions she has kept me home to rest by stealing Rashoumon.” “this kid can get your workaholic ass to actually rest?” Chuuya laughed, coming around him ruffle her hair “you’re than ya seem, aren’t’cha kid?” Clover leaned into Chuuya’s hand, smiling widening.
Another sigh escaped Robin’s mouth, “anyway, let’s get back to shopping, we still haven’t found something for the lovebirds and now I need my own-” “there’s no longer a need for that!” Dazai’s sudden excimation startled the rest “I’m arranging tailor made outfits for everyone to celebrate the end of my party woes. No no,” he waved a finger seeing some open their mouths to protest “I insist! Accept this as a thank you gift too~”
The newly appointed arm candy pinched the bridge of his nose, “look, I appreciate the offer but this is too much-” “you’ll be attending many parties and meetings, the majority will require formal attire,” the mafia boss interrupted the student again “you can’t wear the same thing every time. It’s only appropriate for me to provide the clothes, since it’s part of your job. There’s no fault in this logic, no?” he smiled down at him, nothing threatening, just a normal smile.
Looking up at the ceiling eyes closed, he was quiet. “So,” Robin looked back at Dazai, crossing his arms, “when do I start?”

Atsushi hates the idea, and he’s not shy about saying it.
“I hate this idea.”
“We get the point, Nakajima,” Ryuu sighs. He’s not the biggest fan of the idea either, truth be told. But it’s grating that Atsushi has been pestering him for hours after they had the meeting where they decided on the idea, and everyone else has left Ryuu alone to find the patience to deal with it. “You’ve said. Several times.”
“Maybe this time someone’ll listen,” Atsushi says. “I. Hate. This idea.”
“Kyouka-chan agreed to it,” Ryuu says. “She helped come up with it. If she’s okay with it, she might give us our best shot at getting into the Correctional Facility. Which we need to get your friend out.”
“But using Kyouka-chan as bait?” Atsushi asks.
It’s no wonder no one likes this idea. Even Ryuu thinks it’s a bit much to use a fourteen year old girl as a human sacrifice like this.
“She won’t be alone,” Ryuu says. Tries to justify to himself. “Kouyou-san will be in there with her, and the rest of us will be ready to step in. She just needs to lure the guy in, it doesn’t have to go farther than that.”
“And what if it does?” Atsushi demands.
“You’re insane if you think Kouyou-san will ever let something happen to Kyouka-chan,” Ryuu says. “Besides, Kyouka-chan can stab the man herself if she needs to.”
The idea is as simple as it is universally hated. A high official of No. 6 has an infatuation for slumming it, and a particular weakness for young girls. Kouyou doesn’t often deal with him, as all of her girls are there by choice and almost none are young enough for this particular man’s tastes. But with Kyouka willing to play the part of one of Kouyou’s girls, long enough for them to lure this man in, they can trap him, and they will have the information they need to get into the Correctional Facility.
Although Kyouka is perfectly capable of taking care of herself, still, no one likes the idea of using her as bait in such a sleazy way. But she agreed to the plan, and even helped design it with Kouyou. It’s hard to back out when she says she’ll do it.
“I hate this,” Atsushi says again, as if Ryuu didn’t hear him the first several times.
“I’m aware,” Ryuu says. “You’re going to have to make a choice here, though. Do you want to save your friend or not?”
“Of course I want to save her,” Atsushi says.
“Then trust Kyouka when she says she can do this,” Ryuu says. “And trust the rest of us to get her out if she needs our help.”
Atsushi doesn’t look any happier about it, but he nods once.
Ryuu is glad he only met Dazai and Chuuya after they stopped smuggling humans along with everything else. There’s not much about this life he doesn’t like. The stealing, the violence, the scheming, all of it is something Ryuu took to easily when he found it. But human trafficking is a different situation. It’s too easy for Ryuu to look at the few victims he’s seen and see himself, trapped in the Correctional Facility, to see Gin, spared this fate only by the luck of finding Dazai and Chuuya when she did. Smuggling and stealing are one thing, but human trafficking is entirely another.
Kouyou isn’t all that much happier about the way she has to lure in the official. She prides herself on only taking girls, and occasionally boys, who want to work for her. She doesn’t often take younger ones, and even then, rarely lets them work without training. Now, though, she has to pretend to have found someone to the official’s taste, and there’s very little chance of someone meeting that requirement doing it willingly.
Ryuu had argued against Atsushi being in the room. He acts without thinking, especially when someone he cares about is involved, and Atsushi and Kyouka have a special bond. Ryuu doesn’t think Atsushi could sit by and let someone get close to Kyouka, try to touch her, and let it slide.
But Atsushi is stubborn, and he refuses to let Kyouka go in alone, and the relief in her face when he insisted was so obvious that no one could really tell Atsushi no.
So Ryuu has to be there too, as a buffer for Atsushi. Ryuu doesn’t really think that he could do much to stop Atsushi if something happened to set him off, but maybe his presence alone will make Atsushi think, at least.
The time has come, Kouyou is on her way with the No. 6 official, and Ryuu and Atsushi have to get to their places to keep the official from seeing what’s going on. And Atsushi is doing his level best to ruin it.
“You know, it’s still not too late to back out of this,” Atsushi says. “Kyouka-chan can stop this.”
“I appreciate the sentiment, but she’s literally with Kouyou and the official right now,” Ryuu says. “So if you don’t want this whole thing to be for nothing, you need to stop protesting and get in position.”
“But-”
“Nakajima. For the love of fuck. Get in the goddamn closet.”
There are slats on the door of the closet in one of the rooms in Kyouka’s hotel, wide enough to look through, but enough to conceal the two of them hiding inside. Kouyou had offered the use of a room in her brothel, but Kyouka hadn’t been ready to agree to that. At least in her own home, she feels safe.
The closet is tight, and Ryuu’s shoulder presses up against Atsushi’s. It’s the closest they’ve been since Ryuu felt the pull of Elyurias’ song at Oda’s, but he barely remembers that, caught up as he was in the pain of it, and before that, it was that horrible fight they had, and before that…
The kiss. Ryuu is trying not to give it a capital K, because if he does, he assigns it enough importance to examine. And he’s not quite ready to do that, because he’s not done deciding how his feelings about Atsushi have shifted. There’s a lot of things he feels about Atsushi, and some of them are still anger, still hatred, but some are softer than Ryuu should by any rights be capable of feeling, and he doesn’t know how to accept them, doesn’t know how to weave them into the whole of who he is. Doesn’t know how to reconcile a him that has lingering hatred but something uncomfortably close to affection, to more. They should be opposites. They should be mutually exclusive.
They’re not.
And in truth, Ryuu hasn’t hated Atsushi nearly as much as he should in months.
So with their shoulders pressed together, cramped into a tiny space, Ryuu’s heart runs away from him, jumping in his chest. It’s not the time, and it’s certainly not the place, and he needs to focus, because while he and Kyouka have never gotten along, he’s not about to leave her to a fate like this just because he can’t stop listening for the soft sounds of Atsushi breathing the same air as him.
“…really outdone yourself this time, Ozaki-san,” a male voice enters the room. “She’s perfect. Pristine. The image of a proper young lady. I can’t wait to see what she looks like ruined.”
“You know there’s an extra charge for any harm coming to one of my girls,” Kouyou says. If there’s strain in her voice, Ryuu can’t hear it.
“I’ll pay up front,” the man says. “Wouldn’t want to short-change you.”
“Of course,” Kouyou says evenly. “I’ll take that now, actually.”
Ryuu and Atsushi lean in to one of the slats, peeking through the crack. Kyouka stands beside the bed, face entirely blank. Kouyou’s face is much the same as she accepts a bag of money from their target. And the official…
It exactly what a man who prefers young, possibly forced girls should look like. Sleazy, disgusting. Ryuu doesn’t know how Kyouka hasn’t already recoiled in disgust from him. Atsushi tenses at his side, but Ryuu lifts a hand against his chest.
Not yet. If they’re going through the trouble to do this, if they’re making Kyouka do all this, they need a clean hit. They need to be sure they’ll get this man before he runs. Charging in now isn’t a guarantee.
“I can take it from here, Ozaki-san,” the man says. “You can come pick up what’s left of her when I’m done.”
“As you say,” Kouyou says. The man steps forward, grabs Kyouka’s waist possessively, and Ryuu steps away from Atsushi, ready to charge, knowing this has to be for keeps, when…
The man shouts in pain and drops to his knees. Ryuu and Atsushi are already halfway to him when they realize what happened.
Kyouka wipes her knife on the man’s shirt and neatly puts it back into her sleeve. The man curls around the stab wound in his leg, moaning in pain. Atsushi just gapes at her, but Ryuu has enough presence of mind to tie the man’s arms behind his back. A leg wound won’t stop someone forever, after all.
Dazai and Chuuya join them, then, and Chuuya grumbles about having to waste perfectly good bandages on a waste of space like this creep.
“Kyouka-chan made it farther than you would have,” Dazai points out.
“I would’ve ended him the second he put hands on me,” Chuuya agrees, tying off the bandage more viciously than necessary. “And there’s a reason I wasn’t in here.”
“You never were one for this kind of work,” Kouyou agrees. “It didn’t take me long to figure out you were much better suited to fighting.”
“Damn straight.”
Kyouka leans her head on Atsushi’s chest, and Atsushi wraps his arms around her shoulders. Ryuu is standing close enough to see her shaking.
“So,” Dazai says, kneeling down in front of the No. 6 official with a grin that brings Ryuu back to age fourteen. It’s cold and empty and just as terrifying as it is awe-inspiring. “Ready to tell us everything we want to know?”
In the end, though, Dazai’s particular brand of interrogation isn’t necessary. Kyouka’s stabbing was enough for a man who lives the soft life of an important No. 6 official. He tells them everything they want to know about the security system around the Correctional Facility, the way security has been ramped up to prepare for the Holy Day, the important centennial celebration, the cleaning duty they’ll have.
But just because he answers their questions doesn’t mean they get anywhere. By the time they let the man go, stumbling his way back to No. 6, they’re left with only one conclusion.
“There’s no way we’re getting into that facility.”
They’re all thinking it, but Chuuya is the one who says it.
“Security is too tight,” he continues. “We don’t have the manpower or the technology to try and get past it. And even if we did, that wouldn’t be a guarantee, and we still wouldn’t get out alive.”
Dazai frowns, obviously thinking, but he looks a little like a rat caught in a maze with no exit. Eventually, he’d going to have to accept that there’s no solution to this particular puzzle. As soon as a new road opens up, it’s blocked by a new problem.
“I’m sorry, Kyouka-chan,” Kouyou says. “We were all hoping for a different answer. I’m sorry you had to go through all that for nothing.”
“Maybe not for nothing,” Ryuu says. “Security wasn’t the only thing he told us about. There was also that cleaning duty.”
Dazai is the only one who gets his meaning immediately. His eyes narrow even farther, and Ryuu doesn’t think he’ll be praised for this particular observation.
“What about cleaning duty?” Atsushi asks. He probably stopped listening once he heard about the security, trying to jump ahead and plan a way around it. Chuuya probably did the same thing. Both of them are prone to rush in. They’re not heavy planners.
But Dazai is, and Ryuu is trying to learn how to be. They listened to the part where the man said what exactly cleaning duty is.
“They’re going to remove the West Block,” Ryuu says. “They’ll take everyone there to the Correctional Facility. It’s a way in, at least, and we should be able to move around without attracting much attention from security. Less than if we broke in, anyway.”
“That sounds like a suicide mission,” Kyouka says. “How would anyone get out?”
“I didn’t say it was perfect,” Ryuu says. “It just might have a higher chance of success than trying to break in.”
“So you’re saying we should get arrested on purpose to get into the facility?” Atsushi asks. He tilts his head back, eyes to the sky as he thinks. “It has potential.”
“Not all of us,” Ryuu continues. “Someone can go in through the sewers. They wouldn’t have access to the facility, but they might get access to some of the controls. That would involve a lot more fights, though.”
“Sounds like that’s where I’m going, then,” Chuuya says. “And you’re coming with me, Dazai.”
“But that sounds hard,” Dazai whines, because he’s got too much of his brain focused on planning to really hit Chuuya with a good comeback. “You’re the one with brute strength, why should I have to go there too?”
“I can go with them,” Kyouka says, lifting her head from Atsushi’s chest. “I can help.”
“You’ve done enough for us,” Atsushi tells her. Kyouka pouts.
“I want to help.”
“She’d be useful,” Chuuya says. “She’s fast, and she’s trained as an assassin. If anyone can get to the control room, it’s her.”
“I’ll be with Ryuu and Nakajima,” Gin says. “The three of us should be able to survive together.”
Ryuu almost can’t believe that everyone is agreeing to his idea. It’s a stupid idea. It will most likely get all of them killed.
And it’s the best they have.
“We don’t have much time, do we?” Dazai says. “Not if cleaning duty starts in less than two weeks.”
“Everyone needs to memorize that map of the facility,” Chuuya says. “We need to be able to move through it without thinking. With enough preparation, and a little luck, we might even survive this.”
That’s the hope. That this isn’t a suicide mission, that they’ll all survive to tell the tale. No matter how this goes down, Ryuu knows it’ll be one for the ages.

They didn’t know their parents and couldn’t care to try to remember them, so they had to look after each other. They lived with a few other children and struggled to get by. One day, Ryunosuke and the other kids overheard talk  about a port mafia shipment to some of its lower members. The men caught the kids and beat them all to death, save for Ryunosuke and Gin, who managed to get away. To get revenge on the ones who killed the other children, Ryunosuke went to the spot where the shipment was supposed to come in, but all six men were killed by Dazai’s orders. The older offered the boy a place in the Port Mafia. Overwhelmed with respect for this male who had saved him and his sister from the slums of Yokohama, Akutagawa joined. He was fourteen.  Dazai’s “training” was horrible and brutal. He constantly criticized Akutagawa’s technique and ability, calling him weak and worthless and quite often beating him senseless. All of this only made Ryunosuke want to become worthy in his mentor’s eyes, so much so that he became feverishly obsessed with that. To this day, he will kill anyone with no remorse if it meant proving his strength and worth. But that’s exactly why Dazai is so unhappy with him.  Now, his face is feared all across Yokohama.  – PLACE OF BIRTH: the slums of Yokohama PAST LIVING QUARTERS: The Slums CURRENT AND FUTURE HOMES: Yokohama – NATIVE LANGUAGE(S): Japanese LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Japanese, English, French, some Russian =TALENTS/OCCUPATION/EDUCATION= OCCUPATION/JOB: Mafioso BOSS: Ogai Mori TALENTS: Willingness to get his hands dirty, ability to kill with ease, his ability: Rashomon YEARS OF EDUCATION: No formal education  LEVEL OF EDUCATION: No formal education  =COMBAT= SKILLS/TECHNIQUES: he himself is mostly stationary in battle, unless he can move around with minimal effort due to Rashomon. He won’t perform hand to hand combat unless Rashomon is in its Demon Armor form, because then it can move Akutagawa around with no effort on his part. That makes it easier on his weak body.  SPECIAL POWERS: Rashomon: an ability that can posses and be summoned from any article of clothing, but Akutagawa mainly uses his traditional black coat to summon his ability. It can cut and eat through anything and nothing can cut through it, save for Atsushi Nakajima’s tiger claws. Rashomon has many different forms, all fo which I am not going to list out and explain lol.  WEAPON(S) OF CHOICE: He uses Rashomon 99% of the time, but he keeps a gun with him just in case he can’t.  STRENGTHS: His ability is incredibly strong and can cut through anything, even space itself.  WEAKNESSES: He actually has a very weak body, and so he himself doesn’t move around much and mostly lets his ability to the fighting. If he exerts his body too much, he could easily pass out.  =VERSES= ~íf í tσld чσu whαt í wαѕ wσuld чσu turn чσur вαck σn mє?~ [Monster! Verse]—An AU where the world is humans/monster hunters vs. monsters. Akutagawa is a monster hunter who uses captured monsters in combat. He makes proper use of shock collars and beatings to keep his “pets” in line. He is feared among monsters and respected among humans as a hero that drives back the horrific beasts.
~ѕσund σf mч hєαrt; thє вєαt gσєѕ σn αnd σn~ [Band Verse]—A verse where Ryunosuke is just a normal emo guy who’s an excellent bass player. The only problem is that he doesn’t work too well in groups, or bands...
~í’m α crєαturє whσ‘ѕ up tσ nσ gσσd; í‘ll lσvє чσu líkє α vαmpírє wσuld~ [Vampire Verse]—This verse is very simple and the same for all of the muses that have it: the character is a vampire. This verse is very flexible, so if you have ideas please let me know so we can incorporate it into the thread!! But it’s nothing major, I just love vampires lol
~tαkє mє thrσugh thє níght; fαll íntσ thє dαrk ѕídє~ [Villain! Verse]—Affiliated with @siireniis‘s Phantom Casino. Ryunosuke used to be Dazai’s pupil as a child before the older male joined the side of the heroes and abandoned the boy. Years later, he was found on the street by the leader of the Phantom Casino, Zach Rhys. Now, Aku works for him and is incredibly loyal to him, and can be found as a bartender at the villain-exclusive casino.
~í‘m juѕt líkє чσu! чσu‘rє juѕt líkє mє!~ [Twin! AU]—An AU for Akutagawa rpers who love twin AUs like me!! Basically Ryunosuke has a younger twin brother, Tajomaru (I will play as Tajomaru..!! ^w^)
~í cαn‘t lívє α nσrmαl lífє; í wαѕ rαíѕєd вч thє ѕtrєєtѕ~ [Beast! AU]—An alternate AU where Ryunosuke is a member of the Armed Detective Agency, along with other changes. This verse will be extremely selective as I don’t know much about the Beast novel, so you guys will have to help me lol
~tσ α ѕєnѕєlєѕѕ вєαtíng; crípplєd αnd вαrєlч вrєαthíng; í tσrє σff mч ѕkín; í‘ll hαng frσm thíѕ nσσѕє~ [Reverse! AU]—A very dark and twisted AU that’s the complete opposite of normal. In this AU, Ryunosuke is a calm and well mannered boy training under Chuuya Nakahara in the Armed Detective Agency. He is often referred to by Atsushi Nakajima as his “pet”, as he is forced to do as the weretiger says—otherwise, he will kill him.
~hσld чσur вrєαth αnd cσunt thє dαчѕ; wє‘rє grαduαtíng ѕσσn~ [High School Verse]—A verse where Aku’s just a normal teen. He’s a junior and basically Dazai’s shadow. He idolizes him for reasons I honestly couldn’t tell you. Even though he follows him everywhere, when Dazai graduates Ryu will never reach the fear and control his “mentor” made.

Atsushi was often bullied for being the runt, and that was before his ability began to show. Once the headmaster saw glimpses of his ability, he put him through intense torture meant to make Atsushi hate the headmaster instead of himself. When he was 18, he was kicked out of the orphanage and found Osamu Dazai, who informed him of his own ability and then offered the weretiger a place in the ADA. – PLACE OF BIRTH: Tokyo, Japan PAST LIVING QUARTERS: Tokyo CURRENT AND FUTURE HOMES: Yokohama – NATIVE LANGUAGE(S): Japanese LANGUAGES SPOKEN: Japanese, currently learning English, knows a tiny bit of Russian (from being exposed to it) =TALENTS/OCCUPATION/EDUCATION= OCCUPATION/JOB: Detective (in training) in the Armed Detective Agency BOSS: Fukuzawa TALENTS: easy to get along with, happy to learn, sympathetic YEARS OF EDUCATION: 0 LEVEL OF EDUCATION: no formal education =COMBAT= SKILLS/TECHNIQUES: often uses the brute strength he acquires from his ability. Jumps into combat with little to no plan, but thinks very well on the spot. Favors close combat. SPECIAL POWERS: His ability, “Beast Beneath the Moonlight” allows him to turn into a white tiger. Due to Fukuzawa’s ability, Atsushi has gained enough control over his own ability that he can now control what parts of his body change at a time, as well as give himself the tiger’s strength while still mostly his own body. WEAPON(S) OF CHOICE: His own hands/tiger claws STRENGTHS:His claws can cut through ANYTHING, is very quick on the spot, has incredible strength WEAKNESSES: relies too much on his strength and often throws himself into danger without thinking. ~í cαn‘t lívє α nσrmαl lífє; í wαѕ rαíѕєd вч thє ѕtrєєtѕ~ [Beast! AU]——An alternate AU where Atsushi is the White Reaper, a pet of the Port Mafia, along with other changes. This verse will be extremely selective as I don’t know much about the Beast novel, so you guys will have to help me lol
~í‘m juѕt líkє чσu! чσu‘rє juѕt líkє mє!~ [Twin! AU]— Atsushi and Atsuki (my boi) Nakajima were both twin orphans in the orphanage before they were kicked out. They share a name for their ability, and as identical twins, have identical abilities. They both joined the ADA together and are the closest of siblings. When they were in pain back in the orphanage, the other was always right there. So now, they must learn to navigate this new world together. When it comes to a twin verse, my “twin” will have the same backstory as yours unless stated otherwise. This is to prevent confusion with differing headcanons and backgrounds.
~єvєn íf í dσn‘t pull thrσugh αm í α hєrσ tσ чσu?~ [Hero! Verse]
— Here, Atsushi is a 3rd year student in the hero department, in the class 3-A taught by Osamu Dazai. Atsushi is an orphan and had lived in an orphanage all his life until he was kicked out at the age of 14 instead of 18. He fled from Yokohama after learning of his quirk, which he previously had no knowledge about, to train to get his powerful quirk under control and become a hero so he can save people, which is his true passion. ~íf í tσld чσu whαt í wαѕ wσuld чσu turn чσur вαck σn mє?~ [Monster! Verse]—In this AU, Atsushi is a weretiger (surprise surprise XDD) who protects the woods Lia is from. He is human by day and only turns into a weretiger in the full moon, but if there is some moonlight he becomes more like a tiger. Find more info here.
~ín thє dєαd σf níght чσu wєnt dαrk σn mє~ [Aftermath Verse]—A spoiler heavy AU that follows the idea that Dazai will have to go back to the port mafia. Find more info here.
~tσ α ѕєnѕєlєѕѕ вєαtíng; crípplєd αnd вαrєlч вrєαthíng; í tσrє σff mч ѕkín; í‘ll hαng frσm thíѕ nσσѕє~ [Reverse! AU]—A very dark and twisted AU that’s the complete opposite of normal. In this AU, Atsushi is an executive in the Port Mafia, known as the Black Tiger. He’s insane and twisted and very obsessive, and he is Dazai’s personal abuser.
~ѕσund σf mч hєαrt; thє вєαt gσєѕ σn αnd σn~ [Band Verse]—Atsushi is a drummer and a pretty good singer, but he’s very shy and struggles to meet new people. He wants to join a band, but how...??
~í’m α crєαturє whσ‘ѕ up tσ nσ gσσd; í‘ll lσvє чσu líkє α vαmpírє wσuld~ [Vampire Verse]—This verse is very simple and the same for all of the muses that have it: the character is a vampire. This verse is very flexible, so if you have ideas please let me know so we can incorporate it into the thread!! But it’s nothing major, I just love vampires lol
~tαkє mє tσ wσndєrlαnd~ [Wonderland Verse]—A verse that takes place in the AU of Alice in Wonderland. Here, Atsushi takes the place of the White Rabbit.
~hσld чσur вrєαth αnd cσunt thє dαчѕ; wє‘rє grαduαtíng ѕσσn~ [High School Verse]—A verse where Atsushi’s just a normal teen. He is a foster child who has been jumping from family to family. He’s very similar to how he usually is and would rather DIE than go to detention.
