When Billy signed those discharge papers, piled into his dented Camaro and headed west towards the sunset despite the screaming redhead banging on the windows crying “please don’t go!”, with an aching chest both metaphorical and physical, he didn’t think for a second about looking back.

So how he ended up back in the same shithole he turned his back on ten years ago was entirely beyond him.

He had made a life for himself in California. He got his associates degree at the local community college and worked his way up from a nine to five teller position at the local bank all the way to branch manager, making an upper middle class salary. It was easy work. Boring work, unfulfilling work, but easy and worth every penny. He had a couple of friends, mostly coworkers, more so acquaintances than friends. He had a fancy apartment in the city, he went on dates, though they usually ended in one night stands where the other guy snuck out in the dark hours of the morning leaving Billy to sleep in a bed that was just too big for one person. But he was free from all of those forces in his life that always held him back and pinned him down, and each and every one of those forces just reeked of small town America.

He hadn’t heard a peep out of Hawkins since Max had given up on calling around eight years ago, or at least he hoped that she’d given up and something worse hadn’t happened to her. He regretted not answering those calls everyday. The guilt of leaving her behind like that weighed heavy like an anchor, but he did it anyway. Bad decision after bad decision he was surprised he made it to where he had today, and he just wished she’d call again.

But he also wasn’t sure enough of himself that anything would change if she did, and that phone would likely remain on the hook until the ringing stopped and she was left to the sound of his voicemail.

“You’ve reached Billy Hargrove. Leave a message.”

He wasn’t home the day she finally did call, which fortunately took that decision away from him. Her message was tossed in with a mix of telemarketers and employees calling in for days off, it could have easily been dismissed, passed over like every other piece of junk in the system if her voice hadn’t been exactly the same as it was the day he left her.

“Hey Billy, it’s Max. I know you probably don’t give a shit, but Neil died of a heart attack last night…” Billy stopped listening after the words ‘Neil died’ came over the speaker. He had to replay the message to hear the rest because by the time he’d gathered himself it had already ended. “...the funeral is next Saturday in Hawkins. Nobody expects you to come but I thought you should know anyway and that everyone would still like to see you. Call me back at…” Billy wrote the number on the back of a blockbuster receipt and set it flat on the counter quickly with a firm hand and a quick retraction, like it might burn him. Max’s name and a ten digit number below it in a blue ballpoint pen stared back at him and he just drummed his fingers on the counter and bit his lip trying to think everything over.

He looked at it for probably another thirty minutes while the rest of the voicemails cycled through in the background before he decided to make a call of his own. Slowly and shaking, he dialed the phone number and tried to even out his breathing while he waited for the sound of the pick up. He was partially hoping that it never came.

But it did. The click sound was followed by a voice that didn’t belong to Max, but one he still recognized.

“Hello?”

Billy took in a deep breath. “Hi. This is Billy.”

“Wow, I’m surprised you actually called.”

Billy huffed and if it had been ten years earlier he would have already hung up the phone by now.

“Who is this?”

“Lucas Sinclair. I take it you want to talk to Max?”

Billy tensed at the mention of her name, as if that hadn’t been the whole plan in the first place. “Yeah,” he said, a little bit of shakiness to his voice, “could you put her on?”

After a few short moments of silence and a little bit of movement in the background, he heard her.

“Hey Billy.” she sounded… glad… and it made Billy let out a heavy sigh of relief.

“Hey Maxine.”

“It’s Max.” There was that tone, she hadn’t changed at all.

“Yeah, I know.” There was a pause, Billy twirled the phone cord around this index finger to the point it started going pink and then purple while he tried to get the question to leave the tip of his tongue. “So, he’s really dead?” he asked, blunt as ever.

“Yeah. I don’t expect you to want to come for the funeral, but I just thought you should know, and if you need a place to stay you can– hold on one second” Billy could hear muffled bickering and Max yelling ‘Lucas Sinclair’ through clenched teeth and it brought a smile to his face. It reminded him of all those times he’d eavesdrop on her phone calls with him just to piss her off, just to hear her yell at him through their shared wall before she’d chase him around the house. Those were good days. “As I was saying. You can stay here if you need. We have a spare room.”

“Thanks for the offer.”

“I really hope you decide to come.”

“We’ll see.” He was just about to hang the phone back up, but he stopped himself, “Hey Max?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s nice hearing the sound of your voice again.”

Billy wound up taking the week off and driving that same old Camaro, restored back to its former glory, that did the distance twice before, back over to Indiana, to the place he said he’d never go back to, and he really couldn’t figure out the reason why he didn’t just go into work. There was nothing to drive him to go but the weird feeling in his gut that refused to go away until he called in, and a little bit of that pressure was released.

For each freeway exit he came across on the over thousand mile journey he contemplated turning around, getting back on that on-ramp going the other direction and save himself from whatever hell he’d be walking into.

Because that’s what Hawkins was to him. Hell. There were monsters like his father, and then there were real, legitimate monsters as well and Billy wasn’t safe from either of them, well he was safe from one now. He couldn’t imagine why Max decided to stay in the shithole and not get out like he did.

Maybe that’s what makes him the coward.

The welcome to Hawkins sign gave him chills. He remembered seeing that for the first time, following behind the rickety Uhaul pulled by their beat up truck when Billy decided not to follow them into their next turn, and instead got lost on the “scenic route” of Hawkins which really meant “trees, trees, and more trees” when he hit the Quarry’s dead end and nearly went off the cliff into the water below.

At the time he might’ve thought it would have been better if he had.

A lot of things had looked to have changed about the town since the last time he saw it. Places that he remembered being nothing but vast forests now had neighborhoods and restaurant chains and the place that once had a natural canopy was now completely deforested and exposed to the sun.

But the Quarry was exactly the same as he left it.

From the beer cans crushed and scattered, to the sounds of gravel pieces bouncing up and chipping the paint on his car.

The continuities continued to add up when he stepped foot out of the car, pulling on that same old denim jacket he hadn’t worn in years after trading it in for a suit and tie. His boot hit the gravel path just like it always had, with that same stomp that demanded attention, like each time he got out of that car he had to play into the dramatics, put on the mask and play the part he chose for himself. The breeze and the smell, it was all the same as before, as if the industrialization just several blocks north hadn’t had any effects on this little corner of the town where the birds still sang their songs in harmony and the smell of nature was pungent. It felt like no time had passed at all.

But it had been the sound of a rumbling BMW rolling down the crushing gravel that made him feel exactly like he was back in highschool again, the same rotten kid who used fists as forms for problem solving, the kid who as an adult had worked on his impulsivity, standing there, staring up the gentle slope with his fists clenched so tight his fingernails left marks on his palms. All that work, all that progress he thought he’d gone through, thrown straight out the window at just the mere sight of something from his past.

The BMW pulled up beside him, and the quarry apparently wasn’t the only thing that hadn’t changed. Steve still had the same big swooped back hair and that same exact look on his face when they made eye contact through the passenger window, the same exact look he had the day he told him he was leaving, and screamed at him to get out of his hospital room.

That was the last time they spoke.

Steve got out of the car without a word and just leaned against the door, looking him up and down, and Billy didn’t feel like he had any right to say the first word, considering he’d had the last one.

“It’s good to see you Billy.” Steve broke the silence, and it was almost startling, with both the sudden change of volume, and the sound of that voice he’d almost forgotten singing in his head like a song he didn’t remember learning the lyrics to.

“Is it?” Because it felt like it was all just a formality coming out of his mouth.

He wasn’t expecting an answer to that, so he shouldn’t have been surprised when Steve changed the subject. It was oddly refreshing seeing Steve write the script this time, steering the conversation his way.

“Looks like we both kept our old wheels,” he said, slapping the top of his car twice, maybe a little too hard. The sound of a hand against metal echoed through the trees. “though there’s not as many dents from what I remember.”

“I had it restored.”

The majority of Steve’s body was hidden behind the car that separated the two of them, but he could see in the way that his shoulders moved that his hands had found his own hips, doing that same stance of a mother who just caught their kid in the act of something naughty. “Some good memories happened in that car.”

“Some bad ones too. Or do I need to remind you how the dents got there in the first place?” Billy crossed his arms over his chest, as if the thousand pound chunk of metal that served as a barrier wasn’t enough to protect him. Because it felt like Steve could see directly through him with the way his head tilted when Billy threw his words back at him. Because they both knew that it was horseshit. Memories of whatever happened between Steve and the Camaro existed only in the dents that remained and the neck pain that still lingered. He didn’t actually hold any grudge about that, and he never did.

Because Steve was right. There had been good memories in that car, some he didn’t remember until seeing him again, some that still played in his mind when he went to sleep at night. Maybe that was the reason he kept it around for so long, that one piece that contained all of those few good times, all of those times with Steve.

“You were always so good at that.”

“What?”

“Deflecting. Pushing people away.”

Billy opened his mouth to defend himself, but there was nothing that came out but his own breath, but Steve filled that silence anyway before Billy would have even had the opportunity to speak.

“You cut your hair.”

It was like he was being interrogated.

“Company policy, they practically had to strap me down and take the clippers to my head themselves.”

Steve actually laughed, and it seemed genuine at least. Billy pulled out the pack of red that he always kept on the seat like it was muscle memory. His hands would only ever stop shaking when he had that little stick between his fingers, and they were only shaking more since Steve got out of that car.

“You still smoke?”

Billy put the cigarette in between his lips and lit up, pausing for a nice drag before bothering to answer Steve. Just letting his eyes fall shut and experience just a short moment of relaxation.

“Some old habits never die”

Steve pursed his lips. Every single one of his mannerisms were exactly the same. This one meant that he wanted to say something that he didn’t know if he should.

“Was I just an old habit too?”

“Steve–”

Steve just kicked the side of his car with his knee, sure to leave a dent of his own. The sound was loud enough that the consistent stream of chirping birds transformed into a cascade of flapping wings as the birds on the trees flew away from the scene. He walked around to the front of his car and the physical object that once created separation was gone, and suddenly Steve was within reach and he couldn’t breathe.

“Glad to know it’s harder to quit nicotine than it was to quit me!”

Billy chucked his lit cigarette at the ground and scuffed it with his heel into the gravel. “Who told you it was easy?!” He had a finger pointed to Steve and had closed their distance a few feet more, less than an arms length apart from each other.

“You left!”

“Because I had to! You know I did!”

“You didn’t have to leave me!” Steve practically screamed that final word, his face was now just inches away from Billy’s and he was nearly foaming at the mouth and from an outsider's perspective, Steve looked about two seconds from either kissing him, or killing him.

He did neither. He took a step back and recollected himself with a dramatic clearing of his throat. “You didn’t even ask me to come with you.”

“And you don’t think I regret that every fucking day of my life?” Billy’s voice broke, trembling throughout the sentence like he was containing a ticking time bomb. “Why are you even here?”

Steve just rolled his eyes at the steer. “Max sent me.”

“Of course she fucking did.”

“She cares about you y’know.” Billy scoffed, because how could she? After all he did to her? He could still hear those palms banging against those windows and her muffled screams for her to stay every time he got into that car. “Why are you here?”

“Did she not tell you the part where my dad died?”

“I know damn well you didn’t come all this way to pay your respects.”

Billy let himself drop to the ground and sit on the rough terrain with his back against his tire, unable to continue standing, his legs were ready to betray him.

“I have no idea why I’m here, okay? I just am.”

Steve nodded his head, and he didn’t say anything, no quip back in his face, he just followed Billy to the ground.

“Are you upset he’s gone?”

Billy let out a groan and tried to rub the growing migraine from his temples.

“I’m feeling a lot of things, but I don’t think ‘upset’ is one of them.” Neither of them said anything after that. They just sat there on the ground and enjoyed the silence together like they used to do. Looking up at the clouds and arguing over what shape they were. There’d be none of that today though, and it had nothing to do with the overcast skies. “You still keep a six pack in your trunk?”

Steve laughed and got up from where he was seated and popped the trunk. He was right. Some old habits never fucking die.

Steve tossed a can over to Billy and sat back down on the gravel, maybe a little closer than he had been before. Billy took a long swig and swallowed the bitter taste down. He hadn’t drank much since he was a teenager, he traded in his Coors for Cola and he doesn’t understand how he used to enjoy the taste of it before.

“Why did you stay in Hawkins?”

Steve dug his heel and pushed a pile of rocks forward, kicking a plume of dust into the air.

“Nobody ever gave me a reason to leave.”

Billy wanted to ask if he would have even come with him had he asked him to. But he opted against it, instead just taking another drink from the can and a genuine “I’m sorry.” passed his lips.

“You know I followed you?”

“What?”

“Yup. Made it all the way to St. Louis before I turned around.”

Billy was just staring at him at this point, unsure if he’d just heard him right. He just sat there with his mouth agape, catching flies and waiting for Steve to say more.

“I knew that you needed to go. I knew that you were hurting and it took me almost ten hours on the open road to realize that you needed time to heal.” Steve’s eyes looked glossy and his cheeks flushed but he kept his smile on. “So I came back home, and I waited here for you to come back. I wanted to make myself easy to find when you needed me.”

“You waited for me?”

Steve inched his hand over to where Billy’s was propping himself up and let his fingers gently trace the back of his hand. Steve’s touch was everything. It made his heart start racing and his palms start sweating and it felt just like 1985 all over again.

Billy took Steve’s hand in his own and entwined their fingers together and Billy let out a long exhale as they did.

“Billy,” Steve said softly, scooting his body just a little bit closer, less than a foot of separation now between the two of them, and he looked Billy in the eyes. Billy had almost gotten entirely lost in those pools of deep brown before Steve had the chance to speak again. But he heard it, loud and clear. “I’m still waiting for you.”

He waited.

Waited ten fucking years.

Billy wasn’t going to make him sit there and wait for a kiss too.

Billy closed the distance at the moment the penny dropped, sinking all of his weight into the kiss in a frantic and uneven pace just like they were eighteen again trying to squeeze both of their bodies into the backseat of the Camaro, refusing for even a second to separate themselves from the one point of contact that sealed them together like glue. The kiss felt just like their first. In the same spot, instead under the stars and the two of them both drunk off their asses, and that time Billy tasted of only blood and liquor.

But it was that same feeling. That desire to never pull away, that fear that it would end and that it would be the last time. He had that fear with everyone of Steve and his kisses, that each one might just be their last.

So he made a point to savor all of them.

They kissed until they physically couldn’t anymore. Out of breath with swollen lips and an inability stop the smiles that peeked through every couple of seconds. They sat there with their foreheads touching and their clasped hands still intact, relishing in the heat that was each other’s breath on their faces. Billy was crying, just streams of tears paired with a smile that Steve gently wiped away with his thumb, the brush of contact making him shiver.

“I missed you so fucking much.”

Steve cradled Billy’s head in his hands and peppered a few short kisses to his lips.

“I missed you too.”

“You think this is why Max invited me here?” Billy asked. “I can’t imagine she’d actually think I would want to come to this thing.”

Steve laughed. “No. She’s not an idiot. She figured you’d want to crash the funeral.”

Billy immediately got up from his place on the ground and held his other hand out for Steve to grab onto. “Well you wanna join me while I go piss on my old man’s grave?”

Steve took his hand without hesitation and let Billy pull him up off the ground.

“It would be my honor.”

Hawkins made a lot of bad memories for Billy, most of which he locked somewhere far away, but the good still remained. Right there in the look on Steve’s face with the way he looked back at him.

And he was happy to make a couple more.

Having seen your thoughts on his deeply-unpleasant daddy, might I please ask if you have any thoughts on The Gladiator himself, Hugo Danner? (THE SUPERMAN WHO MIGHT HAVE BEEN, if you will).

What would you do if you were the strongest man in the world, the strongest thing in the world, mightier than the machine? He made himself guess answers for that rhetorical query. "I would—I would have won the war. But I did not. I would run the universe single-handed. Literally single-handed. I would scorn the universe and turn it to my own ends. I would be a criminal. I would rip open banks and gut them. I would kill and destroy. I would be a secret, invisible blight. I would set out to stamp crime off the earth; I would be a super-detective, following and summarily punishing every criminal until no one dared to commit a felony. What would I do? What will I do?"

The thing that strikes me about Gladiator is that it almost feels like the book is unfinished. The quality and pace of the book is all over the place, but you can boil it's general story down to "unlucky bastard is born Superman before it's time for Superman to exist, without the necessary support, mindset and structure to become Superman, in a world that neither supports nor accepts the existence Superman, and just as he's about to have the life-changing epiphany that could make him something, he gets struck by lightning and dies in the 2nd-to-last paragraph".

The whole book is like if in the first Spider-Man story Peter Parker just gave up after Uncle Ben died and we never saw him again. It's a superhero/supervillain origin story that gets cut short right as it's about to lead to the birth of the character proper. It's frustrating, yes, but to my scavenger goblin brain that likes to dig through pop culture's trash to find nice forgotten trinkets to polish and make into something new, it also invites a lot of promise, if we get into the question of what could have happened to Hugo Danner if he didn't die on the cusp of his origin story. It's an idea I plan to use for my own pulp writings.

It's not so much whether or not Hugo MIGHT have been Superman, so much as: COULD he be Superman? Maybe, maybe not. I'd argue not, because even with all his power, and even with his parents trying to raise him as best they could, even with Hugo genuinely trying his best to be good and heroic and turn his gifts to mankind, it wasn't gonna pan out. The right pieces weren't there, the family structure wasn't there, the necessary aspects of the origin story weren't there, and ultimately, Hugo Danner wasn't cut for it. He is a failure at everything he tries to be super at.

At college on the football field, he kills a man. As a soldier on the Great War, he slaughters thousands for years, but fails to end the war, despite having been able to do so from the moment he enlisted. He is fired from a steel mill for working too far beyond the abilities of his fellows, and then fired from a bank for freeing a man from a locked safe, because the bank president suspected that Danner planned to use his powers to rob the vault. He tries using his powers to enact social change and fails again and again. He can't even enjoy daily life, because he cannot compete fairly with ordinary people, and because of that he must constantly hold himself in check, never able to fully express himself. And when he's presented with the idea of creating a race of people like him to dominate the world and to “conquer and stamp out all these things to which men of intelligence object,” he finds it ultimately distasteful, because he knows better than to expect good things to come out of his life. And then he curses God and dies. The whole book is one long argument as to why Being Superman Sucks.

He's not the break from tradition that Superman represented, he's a sci-fi superman who met the same tragic ending his predecessors did. In that paragraph above, the very first thing he thinks about, after remarking over his failure to end the war, is thinking about becoming some galactic dictator murdering everyone who steps out of line, before he considers becoming a fascist super-detective. Kind of a damning perspective to present your hero, isn't it? If Gladiator was released today, exactly as is, people would be quick to assume it's an origin story for a Homelander/Plutonian/Omni-Man kind of character. Hugo Danner was a Superman deconstruction before that became a pop culture cliche.

My favorite sections of the book are those that describe Hugo in the war. By far the best-written and most evocative, almost bordering on horror story. And they may be the most damning sections of them all. He never forgives himself for not ending the war when he could, because he's spent all those years killing and toiling away when he was just about the one person who could conceivably leap all the way to Germany and force the war to end. I imagine a lot of pulp heroes who suffered in the war, or any war, and walked out of it with a resolve to protect and do good by others, would be pretty pissed when discovering that, all along, there was this living god among them who actually could have ended the war single-handedly, but was just too damn busy slaughtering his way through fields of people who couldn't possibly fight back, to think about it.

And for all that Hugo says that he hates war and murder and bloodshed, he sure seems like a total natural for it:

Hugo, out of his scarlet fury, had one glimpse of his antagonist's face and person. The glimpse was but a flash. He was a little man—a foot shorter than Hugo. His eyes looked out from under his helmet with a sort of pathetic earnestness. And he was worried, horribly worried, standing there with his rifle lifted and trying to remember the precise technique of what would follow even while he fought back the realization that it was hopeless.

In that split second Hugo felt a human, amazing urge to tell him that it was all right, and that he ought to hold his bayonet a little higher and come forward a bit faster. The image faded back to an enemy. Hugo acted mechanically from the rituals of drill. His own knife flashed. He saw the man's clothes part smoothly from his bowels, where the point had been inserted, up to the gray-green collar. The seam reddened, gushed blood, and a length of intestine slipped out of it.

Hugo stepped over him. He was trembling and nauseated. The bellow of battle returned to Hugo's ears. He pushed back the threatening rifle easily and caught the neck in one hand, crushing it to a wet, sticky handful. So he walked through the trench, a machine that killed quickly and remorselessly

Hugo was learning about war. He thought then that the task which he had set for himself was not altogether to his liking. There should be other and more important things for him to do. He did not like to slaughter individuals. The day passed like a cycle in hell. No change in the personnel except that made by an occasional death. No food. No water. They seemed to be exiled by their countrymen in a pool of fire and famine and destruction.

And then later, after they kill a friend of his

He leaped to the parapet, shaking his fists. "God damn you dirty sons of bitches. I'll make you pay for this. You got him, got him, you bastards! I'll shove your filthy hides down the devil's throat and through his guts". He did not feel the frantic tugging of his fellows. He ran into that bubbling, doom-ridden chaos, waving his arms and shouting maniacal profanities. A dozen times he was knocked down. He bled slowly where fragments had battered him. He crossed over and paused on the German parapet. He was like a being of steel. Barbed wire trailed behind him.

Bayonets rose. Hugo wrenched three knives from their wielders in one wild clutch. His hands went out, snatching and squeezing. That was all. No weapons, no defence. Just—hands. Whatever they caught they crushed flat, and heads fell into those dreadful fingers, sides, legs, arms, bellies. Bayonets slid from his tawny skin, taking his clothes. By and by, except for his shoes, he was naked. His fingers had made a hundred bunches of clotted pulp and then a thousand as he walked swiftly forward in that trench. Ahead of him was a file of green; behind, a clogged row of writhing men. Scarcely did the occupants of each new traverse see him before they were smitten. The wounds he inflicted were monstrous. On he walked, his voice now stilled, his breath sucking and whistling through his teeth, his hands flailing and pinching and spurting red with every contact. No more formidable engine of desolation had been seen by man, no more titanic fury, no swifter and surer death. For thirty minutes he raged through that line. The men thinned. He had crossed the attacking front.

A man dipped in scarlet, nude, dripping, panting. Slowly in that hiatus he wheeled. His lungs thundered to the French. "Come on, you black bastards. I've killed them all. Come on. We'll send them down to hell."

And years later, when he's thinking back to the misery that had been his life:

His deeds frightened men or made them jealous. When he conceived a fine thing, the masses, individually or collectively, transformed it into something cheap. His fort in the forest had been branded a hoax. His effort to send himself through college and to rescue Charlotte from an unpleasant life had ended in vulgar comedy. Even that had been her triumph, her hour, and an incongruous strain of greatness had filtered through her personality rather than his. Now his years in the war were reduced to no grandeur, to a mere outlet for his savage instinct to destroy. After such a life, he reflected, he could no longer visualize himself engaged in any search for a comprehension of real values.

If he could but have ended the war single-handed, it might have been different. But he was not great enough for that. He had been a thousand men, perhaps ten thousand, but he could not be millions. He could not wrap his arms around a continent and squeeze it into submission. There were too many people, and they were too stupid to do more than fear him and hate him. Sitting there, he realized that his naïve faith in himself and the universe had foundered. The war was only another war that future generations would find romantic to contemplate and dull to study. He was only a species of genius who had missed his mark by a cosmic margin.

Even when he's thinking about the places where he went wrong, that he blames himself for, even when's engaged in introspection, his thoughts still gravitate towards violence and hatred, of squeezing continents into submission and of how much the masses are stupid to not appreciate him (because really, all Hugo wants is to be loved and appreciated for what he is), and how unlucky he was to miss his mark.

There's just no place for Hugo Danner. Maybe it was actually rather merciful that he got to have his misery ended briefly by lightning strikes, before he could either turn into something worse, or have his life ruined more throughly.

John B sat in his van as he let out a string of curse words from his lips. His entire life living in the Outer Banks he had never seen so much traffic in front of his eyes. It was a one way street with about 20 cars in front of him going 10 miles under the speed limit. He reached over and hovered his hand over the passenger's seat before it fell limp onto the cushion.

He felt the small impact of the fabric, sighing as he shook his head to clear his thoughts. It seemed as if it were yesterday when you were in the passenger's seat, his hand placed on your thigh; tracing the letters of the alphabet onto your skin. His eyes fell onto the empty seat as he let out a loud sigh, running his hand through his hair.

You two were high school sweethearts, started dating in 9th grade but split up after high school graduation. You two had a conversation about your future together, whether you guys would want marriage and kids. You had told him you weren't ready for marriage and you weren't sure if you ever would be. His heart was crushed by your words, wondering if you were ever really in love with him. You had always loved him, but you knew you weren't ready to spend forever with him. You both said you two would stay in touch; that was one year ago.

He was too caught up in his thoughts and memories to process the road underneath his car began to shake and rumble. The only thing that snapped him out of his trance was hearing quite a few screams of fear. Only then did he realize that there was an earthquake happening. He sat in the driver's seat, frozen in fear as he immediately thought of you. 

He wondered where you were and if you were safe. Maybe you were out at the bar drinking, maybe you were in your house watching television in the living room. His grip on the steering wheel tightened as he felt his van shake fiercely, wishing you were there to calm him down; and that's when he realized something. If the world was ending, he would want to be with you. 

He would want you in his arms, talking with you as if nothing was happening. He wouldn't be afraid to tell you he loves you, he wouldn't be terrified to tell you that he never stopped. Everything he feared, he didn't care about as long as he was with you. He wouldn't even dare to say goodbye to you in the final minute, knowing he would wake up on the other side with you in his arms. 

He was hesitant while wondering if the world ended, would you want to be with him as well?

You sat on the edge of your couch watching as 'breaking news' was written across your television. The earthquake didn't frighten you, it didn't make you run for cover. You sat on your couch with your head in your hands, your thoughts immediately finding their way to think about John B. You wondered if he was scared, worried, or unbothered like you were.

You turned your head to the empty spot on the couch next to you. Trying to fight back, you couldn't help but let out a laugh at the memory of John B laying upside down with his feet dangling in the air as his face turned a beet red. You could have your eyes closed in a room full of a thousand people; yet still be able to pick out his laugh, reminiscing on the amount of times you caused it. 

Recalling a memory from one night, the sound of your drunken laughter mixed with his echoed in your head. 

You drunkenly thanked the uber driver, complimenting her hair before exiting the car. John B joined your side, apologizing to her for having to drive the drunken couple home. She offered a warm goodbye before driving out of your driveway. 

You shoved your hand into your purse, fingers pushing objects around until you found your house keys. John B giggled loudly before you held your index finger up to your lips, "shh! My neighbors hate me enough as it is." You mumbled, biting your lip to hold back your laughter. "Y/n, how much shit do you have in your purse," he started, "seriously! You shove your hand in there and it's like a trip to Narnia!" 

You cackled at his words, immediately covering your mouth with your hand as you pulled your keys out. Fiddling with the item you tried inserting the key into the lock, missing it 3 times before you were able to insert it. You unlocked the door and pushed it open, nearly stumbling over as you forced the door.

Turning around you flipped the lights on in your kitchen, both of you groaning out in pain as the bright lights blinded you both. He covered both your eyes and his with his hands as you quickly switched them back off. John B pulled out a chair at the kitchen table, aiming to sit down in the seat only to miss it completely as he fell to the floor.

You covered your mouth as you began cackling at your boyfriend's mishap. Doubling over from laughter, your face turned red as you couldn't catch your breath. "Are-are you-you ok-" you couldn't finish your sentence as his laughter got louder than yours. You fell to your knees and joined his side, cupping the side of his face. Your laughter slowly died down with his as his eyes looked into yours. "You're so beautiful." He slurred, gently holding the bottom of your chin as he kissed you.

Returning the action, you sighed in content at the feelings of his lips against yours. He released you which allowed you to snuggle into his chest. Your eyes slowly fell shut as you quietly fell asleep to the sound of his heartbeat on your kitchen floor.

You smiled softly to yourself, shutting off the TV before leaning back against the cushion. You sat there in silence for a few minutes before a rapid knock echoed from your front door. Slowly getting up you headed towards the sound before unlocking the door and opening it. You could barely process who was in front of you before he tackled you in a hug.

The smell of his cologne immediately made your eyes water, not realizing how much you missed him. Your eyes watered as you felt him hold the back of your head as your fingers clutched onto the fabric of his shirt. The sound of him sniffling made your heart ache with pain. You felt like you were frozen in place, like your body turned cold. "You're safe." He spoke to himself, thanking the Lord that you were okay. Slowly pulling himself away from you, his brown eyes searched into your E/C ones. You got lost in his for a moment before inviting him inside.

He sat next to you on the couch turning his body to face you. "I miss you." You let the words glide off your tongue before you could stop yourself. His eyes widened at your confession, his tongue swiped across his bottom lip; a habit he had when he got nervous. "When I felt the earthquake, I realized something. I realized that if the world was ending I would want you to come over. I'd want you to stay the night, even if you fell out of love with me I just want to be with you. You made me feel alive, and that's all I'd be able to focus on even if we were about to die." 

Exhaling loudly, you caught your breath as his eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry if that was too much or didn't make sense-" John B quickly reached forward and held the side of your face, kissing you passionately as you held his wrist in place. The feeling of euphoria ran through your body, goosebumps appeared on your arms as you felt him grin into the kiss. You pulled back from him to catch your breath, resting your forehead against his.

"I could be falling to my doom but I would be smiling because you have made me the happiest person. There could be meteors flying across the sky, buildings could be falling down and on fire, chaos could be everywhere but I wouldn't give a single care in the world because I'm safe with you. I know you said you weren't ready for marriage, but that never stopped me from loving you even after we broke up." He whispered, his breath fanning over your lips.

"I never stopped loving you either, and this whole thing showed me that I am ready for marriage. I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with you." You muttered, a wide grin appeared on his lips. "Really?" Your grin mirrored his, "really."

Sappy Paul Denton x OC Fanfic [Part 2]

The Start of the Collapse

After Paul’s departure, Bebe’s eyes struggled to shut. She laid in bed and kept glancing over at her phone occasionally, half-expecting something from Paul to come up. When she realized worrying was futile, she put the phone down and laid it down on its charging pad. She was worried, but she tried equilibrating those thoughts with reasonable positive ones because she was pregnant. She had to avoid as much stress as possible.

Staying up to write, as she did on sleepless nights like these, she scribbled her thoughts into her diary until she crashed. In the morning when she awoke, the unwelcome feeling of first trimester morning sickness sharply seized her from her slumber. She went to the bathroom to alleviate herself from the nausea.

Treating patients at the hospital she worked at, including those with the Grey Death, was dreary. Their spirits were broken and some of them got desperate. She wished she could divulge the truth behind the virus, or at least what she knew, but it would likely get her fired. She made sure to wear the most protective gear—respirator, face shield, gloves, a gown, and foot covers. Her health was going to have to become her top priority if she wanted a healthy baby.

Hours ebbed and flowed with moments of hectic excitement during rushes of patients and emergencies, but inched like slugs when things were slow and she caught herself worrying about Paul. She wondered what time it was in Hong Kong—surely, at least half a day ahead—and if he was alive. She thought about JC as well and didn’t want any harm to come to the Dentons, namely because JC was a cool person, but especially because she knew Paul would be devastated if his younger brother should fall. She scrubbed the pressing thoughts away from the walls of her mind—months of meditation had helped—and she continued to show up at work.

She checked her work emails to see if by some crazy chance, Paul had been daring enough to send her a message there. But of course not—he would never do something to endanger them, especially with the Aquinas net. After what felt like a 12-hour shift, Bebe returned home with takeout and quickly checked her computer. There, an email from Paul—or rather, his alias—was sent hours ago while she was still at work.

“Hey babe. I made it safely to Hong Kong, thank god. Good news—everything’s taken care of. My brother and I are gonna be fine. The bad news is that I’ll have to be living here for a few months as I recuperate, as I predicted. I was in pretty bad shape when I arrived, which is why it’s going to take longer for me to recover. Tong wants to keep me under supervision for a while. But I’m already feeling better.

Things are pretty tight in HK. I’m a wanted man here as well. I don’t think making a move right now is wise, but I can’t wait to see you again. I’ll keep you updated whenever I can. Try to take it easy and don’t worry about a thing—I’ll take care of it. I love you, and I’m always thinking about you. - P”

Bebe typed a reply.

“My darling, I’m glad you’re alright. I was worried about you, but I also knew you’d make it through this. Give the doctor my sincerest gratitude—he saved the man I love. I’m also happy J is fine. I completely understand if you need to stay there—in situations like this, a doctor’s supervision is necessary even after the treatment.

Let me know how things go. I want to be with you but things have to be just right. I love you, P. I hope you get better soon. I already miss you. Hugs and kisses. Yours,

Within the following day, Bebe received another email.

“Bebe—so much is happening right now. I don’t have much time, and neither does the world. Just bear with me. I’m going to be fine, I think, but my brother keeps unearthing more of this conspiracy. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I know something will, and if it does, it’s going to be big. I can’t explain everything over the net, but I promise I will when I see you. I don’t know how much time there is and I know this sounds crazy but you’ll just have to trust me. Withdraw your savings now. There’s a high chance the net might crash and everything will be lost. Savings, records, and all sorts of info. Make sure you have plenty of food and supplies as well.

No matter what happens, I will find you! And that’s a promise. Just stay where you are. I love you so much more than you could ever imagine. - P”

Something inside Bebe told her Paul wasn’t lying. Everything Paul told her before and everything they had researched and pieced together made sense. She knew there could only be so much more to this story than most people knew and few had theorized about. After typing her obedient reply, Bebe set off for the bank and asked to withdraw the entirety of her account. Her salary provided her with decent savings she had accumulated over a few years.

But she wondered if the funny look the bank teller gave her was indicative of ignited suspicion. She knew it was. She smiled as the bank teller discussed the request with the manager, who gave her a poorly-disguised look of surprise. Who else but a shady person would just want to remove all their chits from the bank? Only somebody that knew something that most people didn’t know would act this way . . . She would just have to lie and say it was for a potential family emergency. Or that she’s just paranoid and that there are rumors the banks will fail soon. Hearsay type of stuff. But no, the latter would be too suspicious. Just go with the family emergency, she thought. 

Signing some papers that would let the federal revenue office know the reason for her massive withdrawal, she questioned just what the hell she was doing. She stopped for a while and glanced up at the bank teller, who was too busy counting chits to notice her. Bebe questioned herself for a bit--she was blindly obeying Paul’s orders, which wasn’t really a problem in and of itself, but how could she really know what was going on? Paul wouldn’t lie to her though. She knew that man for three years and he never lied. She just had to trust him. Worst case scenario, she’d be tracked down. But if nothing were to happen, she could just say she got worried sick for an ailing family member and took the money out to help with treatments.

“Forty-six-thousand, two-hundred and fifty-nine chits, ma’am,” the bank teller said, fat stacks of the electric green notes neatly sitting on the counter.

“Thank you so much,” she said, handing them the signed papers. “Here you go.”

She opened up her purse and filled it with the money, trying to act naturally. The teller and his manager looked at her strangely, as well as the clients behind her. She felt herself tense up.

“Thank you so much,” she said again. “Have a nice day.” She had a habit of being overly-polite sometimes.

And with that, she carried her loaded purse all the way to her car and drove home, the tunes blaring and the pedal to the metal. Suddenly, the music stopped. Could this be it?

She checked her phone and noticed there was no signal anywhere. The music stream was buffering continuously until it lost connectivity for good. Moving to the network settings, she confirmed there really was no net anymore. She couldn’t believe it at first, and then, she did.

Parking her car, she rushed inside the lobby of her apartment building. There were people standing outside with their cellphones in the air, trying to obtain signal, their faces scrunched in bewilderment. Glancing at the far end of two blocks over where one of the P-Mobile buildings was, people swarmed into the store to complain about their phone services.

“Miss, have you heard? The net’s gone black—disappeared,” the alarmed security guard at the reception said. “Everyone’s internet just shut off. Even the phones, TV, everything. We don’t know what’s going on.”

“Oh my god,” she said. “I’ll have to check mine out. Thank you.”

She went upstairs and rapidly scanned her nanokey to her door, eager to get inside. What would she do now?

She checked her computer. The internet was gone. No new emails from Paul, just the cached one from before. As she sat in her apartment, she heard her neighbors arguing loudly in desperation. Turning on the TV, she checked every channel, finding nothing but static—ultimately confirming everything Paul told her. Glancing outside her window and down at the congested streets, violence intensified.

After a few days to a week of the world descending into darkness, reports of the global net crashing and burning appeared on every newspaper. A national emergency was declared, and speculating specialists wondered who was responsible, pointing fingers at foreign governments and even “traitors” within the United States. The zealously religious stood outside every corner, wailing that it was the beginning of the Apocalypse, and the conspiracy theorists held meetings in their garages, claiming it was aliens. But soon enough, the Dentons were named. Bebe paid close attention.

“It is suspected that terrorist JC Denton and his brother, Paul Denton, are behind this massive communications collapse worldwide. We are slowly but surely receiving letters that confirm the internet shutdowns in every nation. Agencies are investigating the matter as best as they can.”

Her heart pounded in her chest. She just hoped the bank tellers didn’t put two and two together and decided to send somebody after her. After all, there was nothing suspicious about a woman withdrawing all her savings a few minutes before the world collapsed. But she sighed in relief when she knew that they wouldn’t have been able to pull up her personal information without the internet.

She thought about her family. Her dad had left them before she was even born, and her mother died of the Grey Death before Ambrosia was released. Her cousins were all living their lives as married people with children, and her only living aunt was old now. What would they think, though? What would they think if she were to run off with a “criminal”, a “terrorist”, a wanted man? Crises were meant to be times where family stuck together more, but with Bebe leaving . . . would they label her as selfish? Crazy? Bad? She only hoped that one day they would understand that Paul was not the person the media and the government was portraying him to be.

They didn’t even know she was pregnant. Engaged? Yes. They knew Paul and they liked him. But the media was a powerful weapon, especially now that the people’s only source of outside knowledge was funneled via the last remaining newspapers. They could twist and besmirch the Dentons as they wished, and people would buy it. Not everybody, though, as there were people who had been following the Juggernaut Collective—until it disbanded—and a few other rebel news disguised as tabloids and conspiracies. But alas, the perceptions of Bebe’s friends and family could definitely be warped against Paul. She had to be careful.

But most importantly, she had to figure out what the next steps in her life would be. If only she could talk to Paul. She wondered if she should keep going to work—part of her would think it better to disappear from society at once and wait until Paul came back, but the other part of her couldn’t just leave all those poor patients behind. She knew there were other doctors and nurses who would do a fine job—but could she really just disappear now? Did she still have to keep up her façade of normalcy? As if she weren’t the woman of the second-most-wanted man in the world right now?

She got up and started packing, hoping that at least sorting this out would bring her more clarity. What were her favorite clothes? What could she stand to leave behind? What would be useful? She took her favorite shoes as well as personal keepsakes and important documents, neatly enclosed in file folders and manilla envelopes, and put them in a suitcase. Most of the money was also stored there. Then, glancing at her desk, she took note of her journal.

How could she leave this behind? She had to take it. Unless, of course, she wanted to be that mysterious woman who left her revealing memoirs in a secret diary. She considered the thought briefly and then took the journal, the pages automatically splitting upon a section with a dried red rose that had been stamped between the weight of the pages. It was the first flower Paul ever gave her. She instantly smiled as she felt the crispy, dark garnet petals on her fingertips, her mind going back to when the petals were bright as fresh blood and smooth like velvet.

Writing Blurb 8.a

Continuation of this writing blurb, where Damien’s day goes from bad to about as bad as it could get, and we meet his arch-nemesis. 

TW: blood, spurting blood, violence, minor gore, panic attack.

Damien awoke with a gasp to the communicator buzzing in his pocket. But that was not what was at the forefront of his mind, now that he was awake. It was his hands, again, the excruciating pain that wracked him from his arms and up the nerves to his spine. It was the ache of his back, the burns on his knees and face, the feeling that there was something caught in his throat, blocking half of it, making it very difficult to breathe. 

When he started coughing, it made very little difference, and he sat there for some time, just trying to dislodge the lump, with little success. In the end, everything still hurt, his throat especially, and his salty tears stung on his burnt cheeks. And the communicator was still buzzing. He cursed, hoarsely, getting to his feet as he went to the kitchen. He opened the medical cupboard with his teeth, steeled himself, and lifted a roll of gauze. Though soft, it felt like sandpaper against his exposed flesh, but his priorities were a little out of order in his muddled mind, wrapping his hands tightly. As soon as he could, he pulled the buzzing, glorified radio from his pocket, coughing as he tapped the notification. He felt like crying as he read it: “Villain: Roman, robbing bank downtown.” 

He bent down, leaning on his elbows on the kitchen counter, sniffling. Gods, he didn’t want to be a superhero today. But he didn’t have much choice in the matter. There were other superheroes in the world, sure, but the next closest was over two thousand miles away in Vancouver. His heroic identity, the Alchemist, was the only damn superhero in the upper half of North America, and the Roman was the only damn supervillain. And the two weren’t exactly friends--Damien couldn’t just call him up and ask him to reschedule his bank heist, just as much as Alchemist couldn’t just not show up to stop Roman, or at least try. If he could stand on two feet, he could fight crime.

Roman was having a good day. The bank heist had gone off without a single hitch, his mechanical horses pulling his chariot weren’t malfunctioning, and he was making a speedy getaway, no sign of the Alchemist. Which was decidedly odd, but kind of nice. He careened down the back roads, leaning on the front of his chariot, eyes squinted against the biting wind. Besides the rumbling of his fiery steeds and the sound of their metal hooves scratching against the road, it was quiet, snow flying past him. Too quiet.

Roman looked around, frowning. Where was the Alchemist? It wasn’t like him to be so late, or to not show up at all. It made today, while a good day, kind of… boring. He sighed, resting a boot on the large sack of money at his feet. Movement in the corner of his vision, a flicker of blue, caught his eye, and he turned his head in time to see the underside of the Alchemists’ shoe inches from his face. 

Stars exploded in Roman’s vision as he was thrown from the chariot, landing hard in the snow on the side of the road. He sat up quickly, the world spinning, vaguely aware that the  Alchemist was still on his chariot, smashing buttons wildly. Roman scrambled unsteadily back up to the roadside, hot blood dribbling from his nose quickly turning cold on his face. A loud, sickening screech of metal greeted him, his machinery toppling to its side and only sliding about ten feet down the road before coming to a stop. The horses were still galloping, legs scraping against the ground. The Alchemist was slowly picking himself up from the road, his back to Roman.

“ABOUT DAMN TIME!” Roman bellowed, furious, bolting towards him. A telescoped spear popped out from his gauntlet, extending as he caught it in his hand and leapt, aiming to bring the spear down onto the hero. He knew, or rather expected, the Alchemist to easily dodge his attack--plenty of forewarning, predictable movement--so Roman was rather surprised when the Alchemist didn’t, shrieking as the spearhead buried itself into his right shoulder. Roman pushed off of him, landing on his feet, while the hero staggered backwards, falling to one knee as he weakly grasped at the spear. Roman noticed he only did so gingerly, like he was trying to avoid using his hands, and his breathing was terrible, coming in fast, shallow, pained wheezes.

“Not feeling so well today, Alchemist?” Roman taunted, feeling a bit of guilt as he went to kick the superhero, but he had an image, a reputation to uphold. His kick was slow, though, and not particularly hard, so again, he thought for sure that the Alchemist would catch his foot, or at least lean back a bit to avoid it. But he didn’t, instead Roman’s hard, metal boot making solid contact with the side of the Alchemist’s face, who grunted in pain and fell to ground, yelping as the spear was jarred by the movement.

“What, no clever quips today?” Roman placed his foot on his side, Alchemist whimpering underneath the weight. Weakly, his hands grasped Roman’s leg, but not very tightly. Roman scoffed, then became slowly aware of a harsh pain, soft sizzling under the Alchemist’s gloves. He hissed, pulling away as the acid ate straight through the cloth of his pants to the skin underneath. Anger pulsed in his gut as he looked down at the angry, discolored patch of skin on his leg. “You--!” He glared down at the Alchemist, who he could tell was smiling, just slightly, behind his mask. Roman swung his leg, kicking him in the head, and stepped away, quickly kneeling and pressing snow into the wound. “Ahh, shit, shit, shit, this hurts…” He hissed through clenched teeth, and glanced over his shoulder at his enemy, making sure they weren’t going to rise. As soon as he looked, though, it was clear that the Alchemist wouldn’t be standing up from this, not on his own.

He was limp, eyes closed, clearly unconscious, and blood was quickly soaking through his thick robes. It pooled around him on the ground, his crooked nose bleeding beneath his cloth mask, a dark stain growing on it. He was still red in the face, his breathing labored and lacking a consistent rhythm. 

Guilt again gnawed at Roman, who bit his lip, looking back at the chemical burn on his shin. He knew if he left the Alchemist out here, he would be dead in an hour or so. And, even though he was a villain, Roman--no, Marcelo Blackwood, the one who was truly wearing that centurion’s helmet, didn’t want to be a murderer. 

Well, you wouldn’t really be murdering him if you just leave him. He’d technically die on his own, because of the cold. He disagreed with the voice in his head, but just for a second, he entertained the idea. If he left the Alchemist out here, and he died, he’d be free. He could do whatever he wanted. He could rob banks, blow up buildings, wreak havoc as much as he pleased. He thought of today, robbing the main bank. It had been so easy--he’d walked in, walked out, and left. That was it. No challenge. And it had been boring. If there was no Alchemist, there’d be no challenge. His way to release steam would become just another job. Not to mention, he wouldn’t be off the leash forever. That international alliance of self-righteous superheroes--he forgot what they were called, again--would send someone new to deal with him. And he significantly doubted that whoever they sent would be as low level as the Alchemist. It irked him to admit it, but he knew that he and his archnemesis were, in the end, chump change compared to the big leagues. And any big league member would make quick work of him. He’d be jailed after their first meeting, and his life would, essentially, be over.

He leaned back, turning his gaze back to the Alchemist, and sighed, rubbing his face. Roman got to his feet, and walked over to his chariot, tapping a button that caused the horses to go still. He wouldn’t let his nemesis die, he decided, tipping the chariot back onto its wheels. He grunted with exertion as he got the horses back up with a little more difficulty, but eventually he managed to balance them upright. He went to the Alchemist’s side, and gently rubbed his fingers on the spear’s long handle, looking for a small button. Upon finding it, near the base of the head, he pressed it in, and it disconnected from the spearpoint. He telescoped the staff shut, reattaching it to his gauntlet, and then, ever so carefully, worked his hands underneath the limp hero, lifting him. He was lighter than Roman expected, making it easy to carry him to the chariot. He strapped the man against the inside front, and stepped on, picking up the reins that were more for show than practical. He paused, and he cast his gaze behind himself to the large black sack lying at the bottom of the ditch. He knew it was stuffed full of thick wads of cash. His finger tapped on the rim of his chariot, glancing between it and the wounded man at his feet.

Carrying a full-grown man and a large sack of cash was difficult, but Roman managed it, the Alchemist thrown over one shoulder, the cash in the opposite hand. He exited the garage of his secret lair, tossing the bag into his office as he passed it by in the dark, dimly lit corridor. He was surrounded by cold, stone walls, his lair cut right out of the rock itself. It made expanding his base a bit of a pain, but it was worth it for the aesthetic. Roman walked a little faster towards the back door as he shifted Alchemist on his shoulder, realizing the hero’s breathing was getting rather weak. He reached it, a giant, steel-plated door that seemed more like a wall. He spat on a sensor on the wall, which beeped, glowing green, and the huge door swung open slowly. 

Marcelo’s home was a far cry from the evil lair of the supervillain Roman. It was modern, with an extremely open floor plan with very few walls, opting for large panes of glass instead. Where there were walls, they were smooth and white, few objects adorning them. Despite the marble floor and general lack of warm features, the space was well-heated by the fire blazing in the porcelain fireplace. Marcelo passed the dark leather couches that sat in front of it, rushing through the kitchen and into his medical room, laying the Alchemist down on the examination table. He flicked a switch on its side, and there was a low hum as it began to warm the cold surface beneath the unconscious man. Marcelo yanked off his own helmet and tossed it down the hall, where it clanged loudly, but he had to hurry. 

Marcelo worked quickly, knowing he didn’t have too much time, wishing Caroline wasn’t away on business. He could really use an extra hand as he cut away at the Alchemist’s bloodied clothes to reveal the awful wound on his shoulder that made Marcelo’s stomach flop. He swallowed, shaking his head clear of his guilty thoughts, collecting some blood in a small needle. He crossed the room, quickly squirting it onto a prepared slide under a microscope before throwing it away, grabbing gauze and cotton pads. 

“Dammit, Al, stay with me,” He huffed, patting the Alchemist’s cheek. He reached for the mask, hesitated, but removed it anyways. To his relief, he didn’t recognize him. To his dismay, he realized that the Alchemist’s face hadn’t been red from the cold, but from burns. 

“What the hell…?” Marcelo breathed, eyeing the developing blisters, and returned to the microscope, peering in. Type O-positive. He fetched a packet of matching blood from the fridge, pulled over an IV stand, cut off the Alchemist’s sleeve on his left arm, and gasped. More burns, more extreme than those on his face, crawled up his arm. He paused, and slowly, carefully, peeled off the rest of the sleeve, the burns only worsening the closer to the hand it got. His hand was wrapped tightly in gauze, small splotches of discoloration a sign of worse things to come. Marcelo stopped, and returned to the elbow. He’d look at that in a minute, when Alchemist wasn’t about to bleed out. A swab of iodine, a small prick, and Marcelo could breath a little easier. But he noticed that his patient couldn’t. He cut away more of the robes, tugging them down so that Alchemist was bare-chested, bruises and cuts and bandages and barely scabbed wounds on display, but he ignored them. Marcelo grabbed a stethoscope and listened to his breathing, first over his lungs, moving upwards to the throat. Alchemist mewled softly as he pressed the cold stethoscope end against fresh bruises, Marcelo listening past it. There were no tell-tale sounds, so he reached up, feeling the neck, and realized it was swollen--not much, but enough to slightly restrict his airways. 

“What the hell have you been doing, Al?” Marcelo muttered, turning away, kicking himself mentally for storing the oxygen canisters outside of the medical room. But he had barely reached the door when he heard a strained gasp behind himself. The Alchemist was awake, gripping the sides of the examination table, eyes wide as they looked around, panic and confusion evident on his face. 

“No, no, no no no no--” Alchemist breathed, voice hoarse.  “I--I can’t be here, I can’t--”

“Calm down, calm down,” Marcelo quickly came to his side, his own voice soft. He quickly pulled off glove, resting a gentle hand on the Alchemist’s shoulder. “Calm down, where do you think you are?”

“I-I--” The Alchemist’s eyes were glazed, wild. He wasn’t thinking straight, something was wrong. “I can’t be here, n-not the hospital, no, no, no--”

“Shh, no, you aren’t in the hospital,” Marcelo assured him, though he understood how the hero could’ve made the mistake in this room. “You aren’t, you’re not there.”

“B-but,” The Alchemist’s eyes went up and down Marcelo, and he coughed weakly, pushing away from him. “No, R-Roman…? N-n--M-mayor Blackwood?” Marcelo was surprised and annoyed. In a tiny little town where most of the residents were spread out so far that few of them even realized they had a mayor, how did the only superhero in Alaska recognize him? Even when he wasn’t even thinking straight?

“Listen, Alchemist,” Marcelo reached towards him, but the Alchemist jerked away with a strained cry. And, just as Marcelo feared, he went too far, running out of table and tumbling backwards. He yelped in pain as he hit the cold floor hard, the IV ripped straight out of his arm. Marcelo rounded the table, heart pounding, and the Alchemist saw him too, scrambling backwards.

“N-no, g-get away from me, Roman!” His face screwed up into a weak snarl, but it was far from intimidating. He raised a hand defensively, blood streaming from his inner elbow. Marcelo gritted his teeth, knowing he couldn’t treat him if he was like this. He spun, opening drawers in the counters behind him, searching as quickly as he could for some kind of fast-acting anesthetic, feeling sick as he heard the Alchemist against the far wall, muttering incoherently, his nonsense words dissolving into a terrible cough. 

“Here we go!” Marcelo grabbed a bottle and a fresh needle, jabbing it into the container and extracting a generous dose of the drug. He flicked the needle, and approached the Alchemist, who was curled against the wall. He looked up at Marcelo with wide, terrified eyes. 

“N-no, NO! Don’t you--don’t you fucking dare, Roman, st-stay away!” He hissed, trying in vain to wear a brave face, but tears still slipped down his face. Marcelo’s heart ached. He really didn’t like hurting people that much, especially like this, when they were already so injured, so scared, even if it was his archnemesis. But he had to do it. 

“Hold still, please, this is for your own good, Al,” Marcelo insisted, but his words fell on deaf ears. He was glad he hadn’t shed his armor as the Alchemist’s flight response suddenly turned to fight, lashing wildly. The hero’s weak self-defense attacks harmlessly bounced off Marcelo’s chest plate, but he didn’t quite dodge a glancing blow to the jaw. He gritted his teeth, grabbing Alchemist’s hand as it shot towards him again, and pulled it forward, sinking the needle into the man’s neck. The Alchemist shrieked, fighting, trying to pull away, but Marcelo’s grip was firm. 

“No, no, no, please, Roman, no…” The poor man wheezed over and over again, his eyelids drooping. Slowly, his limbs began to go still, body going limp, words trailing off. Marcelo reached forward, catching him before he could fall all the way over, and lifted him, leaving the needle on the floor. He laid the Alchemist on the table once again, got another blood bag, and quickly re-inserted the IV.

He had more to do for his patient, but Marcelo paused here, panting, his jaw aching from the punch. He leaned against the examination table, catching his breath, eyes tracing the large gash in the man’s shoulder, the spearhead still embedded, the broken nose, the burns. He had his work cut out for him.

I really liked the episode here are some of my thoughts: 

For the episode as a whole, this last week I was 100% on the “burn KL” bandwagon, but that was too much. Like it went bad fast. I didn’t expect that much damage. It was very sad to see the reactions of people in the city, Jon, Davos, Arya, Tyrion. Too see everything they’ve wanted just crumble literally to ash. 

Here’s some thoughts on the characters: 

Sandor - very sad about his death. I really like the convo he had with Arya about becoming him. Like his entire life was filled with rage and that lead him to lead a very lonely life. So sad he died in fire though. 

Arya - I am glad she made it out alive, but I’m more glad that she wasn’t the one to kill Cersei! 

Jon - I feel so bad for him. He chose Dany’s side and watch Varys be executed and I think on the scene where the sound was low and you could just hear him breathing, I think that was when he realized he did choose the wrong side. We know Jon has never wanted to be a leader at all, his whole life he’s been the “second” tier. I think it’s safe to say that he will probably end up on the throne.

Varys - Just want to say real quick, that I’ve seen a lot of people saying that his “men choose power” comment was like sexist, but I’m pretty sure he meant like “man kind”. Like the people choose who they want to lead, and it’s obvious people are choosing Jon. He wasn’t a fave of mine, but it was sad to see him go.

Cersei / Jamie - I am so glad that Cersei died. I wanted to her to suffer a worse fate, because imo, dying in Jamies arms was the best way to die for her. I really wanted him to kill her because, once again, I was on the bandwagon of “he loves Brienne and is going to KL to kill Cersei and said mean things to Brienne because he knew Dany would burn KL down”. So I was very sad to see that he would always love Cersei. I think that acting from Lena was the once of her best performances for GoT. Like he going from denial thinking the scorpions and Iron Fleet were going to save them and the fear finding out that Dany was winning and then her really crying trying to escape. I don’t like Cersei at all. I wanted her death to come like 4 seasons earlier, but Lena did amazing. As for Jamie, in the words of Tyra Banks “WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU! HOW DARE YOU!”

Euron - finally. Wanted Jamie or Cersei to tell him he was never a King and was never going to be a father though. 

Grey Worm - I am most disappointed in him. Even if Dany hadn’t gone mad, he really was the start of the massacre, because that’s what it was. The battle of KL went from just that, a battle. Dany won, and when she started burning down the place, the soldiers could have saved hundreds of people, like Jon and the Winterfell soldiers tried to do. I get 100% that he wanted to avenge Missandei, but Missandei’s entire life was filled with fear and hatred and that’s exactly what Grey Worm and Dany put KL through. If they would have stopped when the KL guard laid their weapons down, THAT would have been the vengeance Missandei would have wanted. They finally won what they had been fighting for this entire time. 

Dany - Okay so before I start I want to say that Dany is my fave, I’m part of @targaryensource for Daenerys, so don’t send me any hate pls lol. Okay  also before I start, I want to also say that I am 100% here for Mad Daenerys and that’s mostly because I have never been the viewer to want things to “change” or fit my views, ofc I have my own opinions and wants from shows, but I take the shows as they are! 

So let’s start with the bells, I DO NOT think the sound of bells is what turned Dany mad, she didn’t her the dingle and was like ???!!! I think it’s what they represented and what that meant to her. Let’s start with her early life, her and Viserys spent their lives alone, their entire life, they had nothing. They were in hiding. I didn’t like Viserys but if we take into account why he was the way he was, then we can understand. Dany was the same, she feared Viserys and him releasing the “dragon”. Then she was forced to marry Drogo, and she fell in love with him and that was the first thing that was “hers” that she lost. She also lost her brother, and even though he was an abuser, that’s one of the only people she had. 

Then she had the dragons. I don’t think she was so naive that she wouldn’t kill, but I think her killing that witch in order to bring the dragons was a big step for her character. So throughout the seasons she raised the dragons, and we can guess that she spent a lot of alone time, sitting by the fire with those dragons. Then two of them were murdered in front of her. 

Skip to Jorah and Missandei, I could write an entire book on their relationship with Dany, but we know and once again, she lost something she never had before, love and friendship.

My timeline is all over the place but let me add in finding out her father really was this “mad king” and an overall terrible person. Finding out that her brother wasn’t the monster they mad him out to be. Those, good or bad, for her must have been devastating because again all she probably had growing up was her thoughts and memories of what they had / should have had. 

I don’t want to really get into Jon x Dany, but I will say that the thought of her losing what she was raised her whole life believing was rightfully hers to someone she loved was also a big deal. He didn’t want it, but I think Varys said it right when he said  “men choose”. Seems like every group Jon comes into contact with choose him over Dany, and she’s noticed. I don’t think it has anything to do with him being a man. Like look at Cersei, she’s had men, but she’s always in power. I think it’s because of who he is and what he’s been through. Everyone knows of the Starks and when Eddard and Robb both have done for Westeros, and specifically the North, so Jon is the next, even though he’s always been “the bastard”. 

So I think that it wasn’t the jingle of bells that set her off, I think it was the thought of everything she had lost, now the people that essentially took it from her (not the people as individuals, but KL as the capital, as the symbolism) are giving up, but it’s still not enough. 

Now don’t get me wrong, obviously she killed probably thousands of people due to hatred, BUT I’m just saying that her entire life she’s only ever had a handful of people care for her unconditionally, and even more recent, shown the unconditional loyalty to not only her cause, but to her. And I think that’s what sent her off, the bells signaling surrender, but that isn’t enough to make up for what she lost. 

I’ve literally told all my GoT friends (literally two lol) that my wishes for the end is when Dany had that “dream” (vision?) when she was in the throne room, but left the throne and went to her baby and Drogo… remember that snowy scene? I want that to be re-done, but maybe like how everyone’s saying Jon kills her, like if Jon stabs her, and she stumbles into the throne room, and it’s not snow this time, it’s ashes and right as she touches the arm of the throne, she falls in front of the throne and dies. LOL that would be IT. 

Okay so those are my thoughts, and like I said, I’m here for Mad Daenerys, I’m not one to make a fuss over shows, so I can fully appreciate and enjoy the series, even s8. I love it, I got the main things I’ve wanted so far, Cersei dying, Euron dying and since we won’t be getting Dany as queen, I’ll be happy with Jon.

Arplis - News: Hook and Inciting Incident: The Power Couple of the “Must Read Now”

When I set out to write a “body of work,” I didn’t intend a “string of failed proposals” to define its completion. I had hoped to leave a legacy of, well, you know. Actual written novels.

Yet it was time to try again. From a fresh page, my cursor blinked at me; I cursed and blinked right back. Where to go from here?

My attention strayed to my bookcases—in particular, the way I’d organized them. The one on the left holds a couple hundred new and used novels that piqued my interest. I plan to read them someday.

It seemed worth my time to determine what made the books on the right “must-read-nows.” I don’t want one of my titles to languish on someone’s left-hand bookcase, where more urgent reads will find a way to slip ahead in line, and where the sum total of the sale is the $1.15 that was banked toward earning out my advance. A great read is certainly great whenever it is read, but “someday” may be dangerously close to “out of print,” a time when discussion, review, or word-of-mouth recommendation can no longer help drive sales.

It is important to be read. I want my novels to be in the right bookcase. How about you?

I assessed the books I’d gobbled as if choosing them for the first time: reading the back-cover copy, where I could find the inciting incident that would suggest the type of story, and then opening lines, where the prose had a chance to set its hook. Some results from my “right bookcase study” are below. Red type signifies what about each of them said I have to read this now.

For this exercise, I set aside one hook that can be particularly compelling—buzz—since it did not emanate from the work itself. The following examples hooked me all on their own, whether through opening lines that begged my continued interest, an inciting incident from the back-cover copy that raised a question to which I needed the answer—or, in some cases, both. I dove right in because I was hooked.

These examples will address a question from WU commenter Cheryl O’Donovan on my last post, “Identifying and Crafting Your Inciting Incident”, who asked whether hook and inciting incident are the same thing. The answer: sometimes. More on that at the end of the post.

More often they’re a power couple that can work to hook readers and keep their eyes trained on your pages. As with any relationship, it can succeed in a number of ways. Here is personal proof from my right bookshelf.

  The couple that stands united

In these first examples, the thematic tie between opening hook and inciting incident is so strong that one reinforces and magnifies the effect of the other. The opening lines provide a teaser for the questions that the inciting incident will later pose.

1. The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell

[This opening is from chapter one, after a prologue which begins, “It was predictable, in hindsight…”]

On December 7, 2059, Emilio Sandoz was released from the isolation ward of Salvator Mundi Hospital in the middle of the night and transported in a bread van to the Jesuit Residence at Number 5 Borgo Santo Spirito, a few minutes’ walk across St. Pete’s Square from the Vatican. The next day, ignoring shouted questions and howls of journalist outrage as he read, a Jesuit spokesman issued a short statement to the frustrated and angry media mob that had gathered outside Number 5’s massive front door.

“To the best of our knowledge, Father Emilio Sandoz is the sole survivor of the Jesuit mission to Rakhat. Once again, we extend our thanks to the U.N., to the Contact Consortium and to the Asteroid Mining Division of OhBayashi Corporation for making the return of Father Sandoz possible. We have no additional information regarding the fate of the Contact Consortiums’s crew members; they are in our prayers. Father Sandoz is too ill to question at this time and his recovery is expected to take months. Until then, there can be no further comment on the Jesuit mission or on the Contact Consortium’s allegation regarding Father Sandoz’s conduct on Rakhat.”

This was simply to buy time.

Honestly, I hate to cut off this opening, even here. The next paragraph is a doozy, and every single paragraph thereafter draws you deeper into this story’s frame. What continues to unfold on the page and the promise of what is to come create a winch that even while re-reading draws me in with renewed appreciation.

Opening hook: unique perspective, escalating intrigue, extreme personal and public stakes suggested, strong Q: What happened?

When a motley crew of agnostics, true believers, and misfits becomes the first to explore the Alpha Centauri world of Rakhat, their challenges lead to disastrous results, leaving only one survivor—and he, in the story’s opening frame, is too traumatized to tell the tale.

Inciting Incident hook: Just as strong for me, in all the same ways.

  2. The Girls by Lori Lansens

I have never looked into my sister’s eyes. I have never bathed alone. I have never stood in the grass at night and raised my arms to a beguiling moon. I’ve never used an airplane bathroom. Or worn a hat. Or been kissed like that. I’ve never driven a car. Or slept through the night. Never a private talk. Or solo walk. I’ve never climbed a tree. Or faded into a crowd. So many things I’ve never done, but oh, how I’ve been loved. And, if such things were to be, I’d live a thousand lives as me, to be loved so exponentially.

Opening hook: Unusual perspective through deep point of view, engaging character, voice.

Approaching their 30th birthday, sisters, best friends, and confidantes Rose and Ruby Darlen are the oldest living craniopagus twins. When Rose, the bookish sister, sets out to write her autobiography, it inevitably becomes the story of her short but extraordinary life with Ruby, the beautiful one—from obstacles they had no choice but to face together, to fundamental joys, to a deep and abiding love.

Inciting incident hook: Promises the same.

  3. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974.

Opening hook: Powerful question raised, unusual perspective. 

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls’ school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry blond clasmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them—along with Callie’s failure to develop—leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Inciting incident hook: Same, and somehow written so it made me suck in a breath.

  The couple that supplements each other

In marriage as in life, an even stronger relationship can be built when each part of the power couple contributes something different to the whole. In these examples, opening lines and inciting incident hook differently, by raising their own yet equally compelling questions.

4. Lottery, Patricia Wood

My name is Perry L. Crandall and I am not retarded.

Gram always told me the L stood for Lucky.

“Mister Perry Lucky Crandall, quit your bellyaching!” she would scold. “You got two good eyes, two good legs, and you’re honest as the day is long.” She always called me lucky and honest.

Being honest means you don’t know any better.

Opening hook: Two engaging characters, voice.

After Gram dies, Perry L. Crandall, IQ 76, is left orphaned and bereft at the age of thirty-one. But when his weekly Washington State Lottery ticket wins him 12 million dollars, he suddenly finds he has more family than he knows what to do with.

Inciting incident hook: Unique perspective, strong story challenge for a (potentially) disadvantaged character.

  5. The Promise of Stardust by Priscille Sibley

Late that night—on our last night—we lay in awe, mesmerized again by the Perseid meteor showers as they transformed stardust into streamers of light. They were an anniversary of sorts for us, a summertime event Elle and I both cherished, and we fell asleep on the widow’s walk of our old house, my beautiful wife curled up beside me, her head resting in the crook of my arm.

If only I’d stayed home in the morning—if only I’d looked over at Elle and realized nothing I could or would ever do was more important than keeping her safe. If only—Jesus—

Opening hook: Impending doom for lovers, that tortured “Jesus” in the second paragraph.

When a tragic accident leaves Elle brain-dead, Matt is devastated. Though he cannot bear losing her, he knows his wife, a thoughtful and adventurous scientist, feared only one thing—a slow death. Just before Matt agrees to remove Elle from life support, the doctors discover she is pregnant. Matt’s clear-cut decision becomes an impossible choice.

Inciting incident hook: Ripped-from-the-headlines relevance, life-or-death stakes, a quandary I must watch play out.

  6. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

In my first memory, I am three years old and I am trying to kill my sister.

Opening hook: Unusual perspective.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood, a role she has never challenged…until now.

Inciting incident hook: A character’s deep desire to live on her own terms, raises strong question, ripped-from-the-headlines relevance.

  The couple that compensates for one another

This power couple intuitively makes up for each other’s weaknesses. I found it interesting to note how powerful the hook and the inciting incident could be in their own right. In this first example, the inciting incident is fine, but does not necessarily promise a riveting read. The prose, on the other hand, is entertaining enough to make up for it.

Girls’ Poker Night by Jill A. Davis

Happy endings aren’t for cowards. I’ve been alive for how many years, and I’ve just figured that one out.

Opening hook: Voice. I want to hang out with this character.

When irreverent lifestyle columnist Ruby Capote falls for her boss, and he wants her to stop being quippy and clever and become the writer and the woman he knows she can be, Ruby turns to the support of her poker night friends.

Inciting incident: This one fell flat for me, having failed to raise a gripping question, but the opening lines were so inviting that I hopped aboard and read it through.

  Finding Jake by Bryan Reardon

My name is Simon Connolly. You may have heard of my son, Jake. Most people have, but they don’t know him. Not really.

As for me, they don’t know me, either. I’m not even sure why I’m still here. I can barely stand up, let alone venture beyond the front door. If I let such a simple effort beat me, I’m not sure what’s left.

This opening, from the prologue, is lukewarm for me. If I had read this opening alone, I probably wouldn’t have purchased the book. But wait till you read the inciting incident:

When stay-at-home dad Simon Connolly receives a text saying there has been a shooting at the high school, he is forced to wait at the rendezvous point with scores of other anxious parents as, one by one, they are reunited with their children. Their numbers dwindle until Simon sits alone. His son is the only child missing, inspiring Simon’s obsessive search for his son and deep introspection about this worthiness as a parent.

Inciting incident hook: Immediacy, relevance, life-or-death stakes, parent’s worst nightmare

This inciting incident was enough to span the lukewarm prologue and the backstory first chapter, which takes place eight months before Jake’s birth. Why? Because I. Had. To. Know. The readers who put it on the New York Times bestseller list seem to agree with me.

  Cheryl, here’s your answer

To answer Cheryl’s question, are the inciting incident and the hook the same thing? If you’re talking about a query letter, probably, because within its limited word count, and if positioned first, the inciting incident will raise the story question that hooks an agent’s interest. Make sure to carefully craft your inciting incident so that it raises a powerful question.

But take equal care with the opening lines of your manuscript, as their ability to lure the reader ever deeper will likely lead to an immediate desire to read.

In regard to your typical reader’s experience, though, the answer is no, they are not the same thing. The hook is what invites the reader into the story in the opening lines, and then keeps them reading until the inciting incident unfolds. That event will inspire the protagonist to set a goal, and the associated story question will take over, keeping the reader hooked until that question is addressed at the end of the story.

Michael C. Cooper, Convicted in Tax Scam, Dies a Prisoner at 66

For decades Michael C. Cooper ran small-time investment and marketing scams in Topeka, Kan., repeatedly clashing with securities and consumer protection agencies. He mocked their actions as inconsequential and ineffective.Then, in 1997, as Senate hearings in Washington were dramatizing supposed abuses of taxpayers by the Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Cooper saw an opportunity to profit from public resentment of the tax system — and to move up from a local flimflam artist to a national one.He launched Renaissance/The Tax People, a tax-avoidance business that ultimately ensnared about 50,000 Americans — until a Kansas state judge shut the firm down in 2001, ruling that it was an illegal pyramid scheme of a “fundamentally deceptive nature” that had cost customers and investors at least $84 million.Tried, convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, Mr. Cooper never got out. He died on Friday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed without stating a cause. He had been held at the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., before being moved to a nearby hospital three months ago for bypass surgery, which did not go well, according to a social media post by his daughter, Crissy Moussa.Mr. Cooper, who had been scheduled for release in August, was 66.Mr. Cooper’s business involved soliciting investors who would pay up to $1,200 plus $100 a month for each “package” of tax-avoidance methods they received, with promises that their income tax obligations would shrivel.The Tax People was the subject of a front-page article in The New York Times in September 2000, part of a series on tax schemes that was awarded a Pulitzer Prize.That article examined Mr. Cooper’s claims that “golf, hunting, fishing and even vacations with your family” could become tax-deductible expenses for those who bought the company’s system. The Tax People boasted that its “Tax Dream Team” included former I.R.S. officials who were such powerful advocates for the Cooper system that I.R.S. auditors had wilted before them. One team member was Jesse A. Cota, a former I.R.S. district director in California.In an interview in his San Diego hotel suite in 2000, Mr. Cooper told a reporter that dropping a business card in a fishbowl at a restaurant’s cash register made the meal, parking and mileage to and from the establishment tax-deductible. Asked by The Times to identify a statute, regulation or court case authorizing such deductions, Mr. Cooper said the answer was in his company’s promotional materials. Advised that no authority was cited in those materials, Mr. Cooper said the right to such deductions was common knowledge. He then said that one of his “Tax Dream Team” experts would explain. When asked which team member should be queried, Mr. Cooper stood up and walked out of the room.Carla Stovall, the Kansas attorney general at the time, asked a state court in 2001 to shut down the business. At a civil court hearing, Charles W. King, a professor of marketing at the University of Illinois at Chicago, testified that The Tax People was a legitimate marketing firm.Professor King’s testimony came after Mr. Cota had admitted in court that the firm’s claim to have signed up thousands of tax professionals was false, and that the real number was 541.Mr. Cooper’s firm also told investors that it had won every tax audit. Mr. Cota admitted that this had not been true for 59 percent of the audits.Mr. Cooper and his team, court papers showed, falsely asserted that “every strategy contained in the Tax Relief System is absolutely sound, unassailable and proven over the past 40 years,” and that the system “was approved for continuing education credit for C.P.A.s in all 50 states.”Richard D. Anderson, a Kansas state court judge, ordered the firm closed and directed Mr. Cooper to forfeit his assets.“At its core,” the judge wrote, “the Renaissance marketing plan is a clever scheme to extract money from consumers through the use of misrepresented facts, exaggerated claims and projections, undisclosed material facts and false promotions.”Judge Anderson jailed Mr. Cooper for contempt of court and ordered him to forfeit $13.6 million, but freed him 13 days later on Mr. Cooper’s promise to travel to Mexico to recover $2 million that he said belonged to him. When Mr. Cooper failed to return, Judge Anderson ordered his home in Topeka, 80 acres of land and other property seized.A raid on the company headquarters — in the Fleming Mansion, one of Topeka’s most notable homes — yielded 240 Australian gold coins, 310 Canadian gold coins, a Mercedes-Benz, a Dodge Viper luxury sports car and a 2.37-carat diamond ring.I.R.S. agents, postal inspectors and state authorities also found more than $8 million in cash and records of bank accounts holding millions more.In late 2004, Mr. Cooper was arrested while crossing into the United States from Mexico at Laredo, Texas. His Topeka lawyer, Jerry Berger, said at the time that Mr. Cooper was unaware of a sealed 148-count federal indictment against him and his “Dream Team.” Mr. Cooper had been living in Puerto Vallarta with his wife, Mary Cooper, and two children, Mr. Berger said.Eric Melgren, the United States attorney for the Kansas district at the time, said that Mr. Cooper and his confederates had been “selling something that was too good to be true,” and that it was just “bad advice, wrapped up in glossy packages and false promises.”Mr. Cooper went to trial. Other members of his team pleaded guilty to money laundering, conspiring to defraud the federal government and other charges and were given much lighter sentences.Mr. Cota was sentenced to two years in prison. His experience as a former I.R.S. executive had been central to Mr. Cooper’s marketing claim that the Renaissance system was endorsed by the I.R.S. Mr. Cota was paid more than $300,000. He was fined $250,000.Among those who paid to join Renaissance/The Tax People was Marcy Szarama, the owner of a construction management firm in Southern California. She said a police officer had recommended the system as a legal way to reduce income taxes.“The Tax People were encouraging you to start your own business, just so you could have a tax write-off, but there was no other real intention other than tax deductions,” Ms. Szarama said in a phone interview, adding that she had grown suspicious after joining because the tax-avoidance strategies seemed vague. She said she had lost about $4,000 and received no restitution.Steve Kassel, a tax preparer in South San Francisco, said he now regretted working with Mr. Cooper and Mr. Cota. He withdrew, he said, after being alarmed by some of the company’s marketing claims, but acknowledged that he had left too late to avoid disciplinary action. For five years he lost his authorization to represent clients in I.R.S. proceedings.“I should have listened to my wife when she told me to avoid it,” Mr. Kassel said of the Cooper organization in a recent phone interview.(The Senate hearings that had inspired Mr. Cooper elicited testimony that I.R.S. auditors, collections officers and criminal agents had run roughshod over taxpayers. The Real Reason Why I’m Not Allowed Inside The Denny’s Anymore

    Snow covered the road as Kain drove down the highway. They were almost to their cabin.

    He parked the car. “we hear bb”

    “It will be a long, freezing night. We need supplies. Can you get some wö’od?” Amy, his girlfriend, asked. She had forgotten to bring a coat, and also the proposal ring.

    “ill get sum donut worrie :3”

    Did he just say a face? “I need to go reconsider how the universe works.” Maybe this marriage thing too. Amy got out of the car and marched through the snow bank. “Do not forget the wö’od my love.” She watched him drive off and then unlocked the door.

    Amy entered swiftly, closing the door behind her. She shivered. It was about as warm as a corpse in Norway that legally isn’t allowed to be unearthed in case it causes another pandemic. As expected, there was no wood in the fireplace. 

    She followed her way back up the familiar stairs to the attic. There were plenty of blankets to be had. One by one, she dragged them downstairs and made a fort. It was a complicated structure, designed with easy access to the fireplace and a ventilation system. It was tiring work, and even though it was only early afternoon, she fell asleep and started to dream.

    A horse walks through the snow. He thinks that having an intermission in a story this short is a stupid idea. He cannot express this opinion, both because he is a horse, and because he does not know that he is within a story.

    The horse is not hungry, for he had a snack earlier.  He has plenty of warmth, snowflakes melting as they hit his pelt. The only pain he faces is emotional.

    All his life he tried to gain his father’s approval. He had been too runty, too ugly, too stupid for it. Finally he had been sold off to a rich family; finally he had met his father’s expectations. 

    It had not lasted. He walks back to his home town in shame. A sign in the distance. Free Plastic Surgery at Claire’s (with purchase.) Maybe he could at least be pretty enough for his father. An unsuccessful child is less shameful if said child has had thousands of dollars worth of alterations made to their body.

    The horse speeds into a gallop. It will be morning soon and he wants to be first in line.

    Something hit Amy. “Nieghe,” the thing said. It was a horse. Her perfect fortress had mostly fallen into disrepair in her sleep.

    “im home sweatie :D”

    The emoticon sent shivers down her already-frozen spine. Wind rocked the house. “Can you light the fireplace? It is cold.”

    “im sowwie babie i spent all the monays on my new freind chad” He reached over and pet the horse. “heil keep us warm”

    “Neighghh,” Chad neighed.

    Amy swaddled deeper in her cacoon. “He does not have enough hë’et for all four of us Kain.”

    “ok i know im not great at math but im pretty sure we are only 3”

    How was it possible to instill the dread of seeing a typo into your voice? “No. I am,” Amy paused. “I am. I-I am pregnerte.”

    “ur pregante” he asked.

    “Neieihg,” Chad said.     “Yes I am pragnerp. How will he provide for all of us?”

    “hes berg hoarse he can keep us warm” Kain said.

    Amy considered it for a moment. “I think you are right. If we cut him open and hide in the skin, we will have a nice meal and be able to stay toasty all night. I call the intestine’s- I need a new scarf.”

    Kain’s mouth gaped open. “u cant kill him hees my frond dont u loaf me :(“

    Chad took a few steps back. “Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiegh.” Perhaps he could understand human speech. Or maybe he just recognized her determination to have some fresh winter fashion.

    “I could put up with the weird faces, but this is too much.” Amy looked Kain straight in the eye. “You are no longer my boyfreind.” 

    “:(“

    “Neeigeh,” disapproved Chad.

    Kain gave Chad a hug. “im nice so ill let u stay teh nite butt after that we dont have to talk amy”

    “But I refuse. We will die long before the night is over.” Amy pulled her blanket over her head. “What if there is an intruder?”

    As if she had predicted the future, the door suddenly burst open, bringing with it the frigid air of the storm.

    Kain turned around. “an intruder oh no chad like i taught you”

    Chad pulled out a gun. “Neeeigh.” Chad pressed down the trigger. Chad, like most horses, did not have hands with which to aim. Bullets spewed everywhere.

    Kain went over and shut the door. “wait nvm theres nothing there just the storm” 

    “I am bleeding out. Why did you do this? How could you trust a horse with a gun over your own girlfriend?” 

    “ok i didnt give him the gun i dont know where chad got that but i am proud of him” He pulled a carrot out of his pocket and fed it to Chad. “he was supposed to do a song and dance routine but i like his creativity”

    Chad neighed happily. “Neighh!”

SUMMARY

The movie, which Cimino also wrote, is loosely based on, and named after, two infamous early-nineteenth-century Irish bandits. As a young ne’er-do-well, Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges) steals a car. In the other sub-story, an assassin attempts to shoot a preacher delivering a sermon at his pulpit. The preacher escapes on foot. Lightfoot, who happens to be driving by, inadvertently rescues the preacher by running over his pursuer and giving the preacher a lift.

Lightfoot eventually learns that the “minister” is really a notorious bank robber known as “The Thunderbolt” (Clint Eastwood) for his use of a 20 millimeter cannon to break into a safe. Hiding out in the guise of a clergyman following the robbery of a Montana bank, Thunderbolt is the only member of his old gang who knows where the loot is hidden.

After escaping another attempt on his life by two other men, Thunderbolt tells Lightfoot that the ones trying to kill him are members of his gang who mistakenly thought Thunderbolt had double-crossed them. He and Lightfoot journey to Warsaw, Montana to retrieve the money hidden in an old one-room schoolhouse. They discover the schoolhouse has been replaced by a brand-new school standing in its place.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot are abducted by the men who were pursuing them—the vicious Red Leary (George Kennedy) and the gentle Eddie Goody (Geoffrey Lewis)—and driven to a remote location where Thunderbolt and Red fight each other, after which Thunderbolt explains how he never betrayed the gang.

Lightfoot proposes another heist—robbing the same company as before—with a variation on the original plan; the variation being due to Lightfoot inadvertently killing their electronics expert, Dunlop, the man who tried to assassinate Thunderbolt in the earlier scene. In the city where the bank is located, the men find jobs to raise money for needed equipment while they plan the heist.

The robbery begins as Thunderbolt and Red gain access to the building. Lightfoot, dressed as a woman, distracts the Western Union office’s security guard, deactivates the ensuing alarm, and is picked up by Goody. Using an anti-tank cannon to breach the vault’s wall, as they did in the first heist, the gang escapes with the loot. They flee in the car, with Red and Goody in the trunk, to a nearby drive-in movie in progress. Upon seeing a shirt tail protruding from the car’s trunk lid (which is a strong indication one or more people are hiding in the trunk to avoid paying), the suspicious theater manager calls the police and a chase ensues. Goody is shot and Red throws him out of the trunk onto a dirt road, where he dies.

Red then forces Thunderbolt and Lightfoot to stop the car. He pistol-whips them both, knocking them unconscious, and kicks Lightfoot violently in the head. Red takes off with the loot in the getaway car but is again pursued by police, who shoot Red several times, causing him to lose control of the car and crash through the window of a department store, where he is attacked and killed by the store’s vicious watchdog.

Escaping on foot, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot hitch a ride the next morning and are dropped off near Warsaw, Montana, where they stumble upon the one-room schoolhouse—now a historical monument on the side of a highway—moved there from its original location in Warsaw after the first heist. As the two men retrieve the stolen money, Lightfoot’s behavior becomes erratic as a result of the beating.

Thunderbolt buys a new Cadillac convertible with cash, something Lightfoot said he had always wanted to do, and picks up his waiting partner, who is gradually losing control of the left side of his body. As they drive away celebrating their success with cigars, Lightfoot, in obvious distress, tells Thunderbolt in a slurred voice how proud he is of their ‘accomplishments’, and slumps over dead.

Thunderbolt snaps his cigar in half (as it is no longer a celebration), and with his dead partner beside him, he drives off down the highway into the distance.

  DEVELOPMENT

Stan Kamen of the William Morris Agency came up with the initial idea for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, but gave it to Michael Cimino to write on speculation with Eastwood in mind. Due to the great financial success of Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, road pictures were a popular genre in Hollywood. Eastwood himself wanted to do a road movie. Agent Leonard Hirshan brought the script to Eastwood from fellow agent Kamen. Reading it, Eastwood liked it so much that he originally intended to direct it himself. However, on meeting Cimino, he decided to give him the directing job instead, giving Cimino his big break and feature-film directorial debut. Cimino later said that if it was not for Eastwood, he never would have had a career in film. Cimino patterned Thunderbolt after one of his favorite ’50s films, Captain Lightfoot. The music is composed by Dee Barton but the song “Where Do I Go From Here?” is composed and performed by Paul Williams.

PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY/BEHIND THE SCENES

Although Eastwood generally refused to spend much time in scouting for locations, particularly unfamiliar ones, Cimino and Eastwood’s producer Robert Daley traveled extensively around the Big Sky Country in Montana for thousands of miles and eventually decided on the Great Falls area and to shoot the film in the towns of Ulm, Hobson, Fort Benton, Augusta and Choteau and surrounding mountainous countryside. The film was shot in 47 days from July to September 1973. It was filmed in Fort Benton, Wolf Creek, Great Falls, and Hobson. St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hobson was used for the opening scene.

Eastwood did not like to do any more than three takes on any given shot, according to co-star Bridges. “I would always go to Mike and say ‘I think I can do one more. I got an idea.’ And Mike would say ‘I gotta ask Clint.’ Clint would say, ‘Give the kid a shot.'” Charles Okun, first assistant director on Thunderbolt, added, “Clint was the only guy that ever said ‘no’. Michael said ‘OK, let’s go for another take.’ It was take four, Clint would say ‘No we got enough. We got it.’ […] And if [Cimino] took too long to get it ready, [Clint] would say, ‘It’s good, let’s go.'”

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot 1974 (FILMING LOCATION)

  “They said the writer wants to direct it himself.” Michael Cimino wasn’t unknown to Eastwood – he’d done a pass on Magnum Force the previous year. “So I said, ‘Well let’s take a shot with him, he writes rather vividly he should direct rather vividly.” This is perhaps best-remembered as the film Cimino directed on time and under budget. As the title suggests, it’s a light-hearted buddy/caper movie with an underlying melancholy suggested by the very ’70s ending in which one of the buddies dies (these days, it would preview badly and be changed). Korean War veteran John ‘Thunderbolt’ Doherty (Eastwood), who sometimes poses as a preacher, spends his time with his wilder pal Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges) robbing banks. What starts out breezily in Butch and Sundance vein, darkens as it realizes just how self-destructive the mock marriage of male-bonding can be.

 “Everybody there was on a no-nonsense road,” asserts Eastwood. “His extravagances came out several pictures down the line. There was no reason it shouldn’t be on time,” says Eastwood. “To go in and do one shot after lunch and another one maybe at six o’clock and then go home is not my idea of something to do.   DISTRIBUTION/RELEASE

Thunderbolt was released on May 23, 1974. The film grossed $9 million in rentals on its initial theatrical release and eventually grossed $25 million overall, making it the 17th highest-grossing film of 1974. The film did respectable box office business, and the studio profited, but Clint Eastwood vowed never to work with the movie’s distributor United Artists again due to what he felt was bad promotion. According to author Marc Eliot, Eastwood perceived himself as being upstaged by Bridges.

Given that for Eastwood this was an offbeat film, Frank Wells of Warner Bros. refused to back Malpaso in the production, leaving him to turn to United Artists and producer Bob Daley. Eastwood was unhappy with the way that United Artists had produced the film and swore “he would never work for United Artists again”, and the scheduled two-film deal between Malpaso and UA was cancelled.

  Eastwood took a big chance on you with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, which you directed in 1974 with him and Jeff Bridges starring. Huge. It was [Eastwood’s production company] Malpaso’s first picture. One of the great things about him is that he’s never been afraid to take a chance on new people. I remember we saw The Wild Bunch together in New York at a theater. It was myself, my producer, Joann Carelli, and Clint. We watched it and then walked down to P.J. Clarke’s and had a hamburger. No big deal. Jeff Bridges, the same way. I was unbelievably fortunate to have both of them in my first film. And never have I had such a good time making a movie. I would go to Clint every day and say, “Hey, boss, you happy with the dailies?” He said, “Michael, you just keep shooting what you’re shooting.” He said, “I’ve done so many films with great backgrounds, and it looks like it could have been shot in Burbank, but you have an eye for scope.” When I look back, given all of my experiences, it was by far the best. We still don’t know any more today than we did two years ago about how or where music superstar Prince got the deadly fentanyl that killed him in an accidental opioid overdose. But now we can scroll through 10 gigabytes of documents, pictures and videos police gathered in their futile investigative effort to find out.

Once authorities in his home Carver County, Minn., announced Thursday that no charges would be filed against anyone in connection with Prince’s April 21, 2016, death, all of the records of their inconclusive investigation became public and were posted online at the Carver County Sheriff’s Office website. 

There are pages and pages of transcripts of long interviews with various people in Prince’s life, such as his young and new-on-the-job assistant Meron Bekure, his longtime best friend, bodyguard and Paisley Park estate manager, Kirk Johnson, and his personal chef, Ray Roberts.

There are voluminous police reports written in cop-speak and dense with details about every single thing cops said or did or photographed at Prince’s Paisley Park home/studio compound on the day he was found dead in an elevator there.  

There are details about all the things they found inside, including dozens of bottles containing pills and thousands of dollars in cash lying around or in drawers or cases. 

There are multiple videos on the inside of parts of Paisley Park, some of which look anything but homey and more like the lobby of a large office building.

There are videos and pictures of Prince’s dead body and where it was found. There are videos of the inside of a local pharmacy where Prince pal Johnson picked up a prescription the night before Prince’s death. There are audio files on the recording of various statements. 

Here are some of the intriguing details we’ve found so far:

The death scene:

There are five videos containing close-ups of Prince’s dead body, sprawled on his back on a Persian-style rug at the entrance to the elevator at Paisley Park.

He was slightly on his left side, his left arm on the floor, his right arm across his midsection. His left arm and right ankle had EKG cable patches from lifesaving techniques used by paramedics. His right wrist was wrapped in blue tape. He was shoeless, dressed in black and grey workout-style clothes with black socks, and a black knit cap covered his head and hair. 

Prince’s laptop:

A report by Sgt. DeWitt Meier described what he saw and did when he arrived to help with the investigation of the scene on the day Prince’s body was found. On April 21, 2016, Meier saw an Apple laptop sitting on the dresser in Prince’s bedroom, but he didn’t search it or seize it. He saw no cellphones.

The next day, Meier says, after numerous pill bottles were found throughout Paisley Park, he learned that Prince and his staff communicated by telephone or email only, not cellphone.

“I regretted not taking the computer by the bedside, as I believe that this contained conversations between his staff and (Prince) about medications possibly,” Meier wrote.

Only then did he direct someone to get a search warrant for the laptop, which by then had been placed in a locked office. When the search warrant was finally executed five days after Prince’s death, a locksmith had to be called to open the door and retrieve it.

Prince did not have or use a cellphone, authorities said, and that was one of the reasons it was difficult to find evidence to show how he obtained counterfeit Vicodin laced with fentanyl. If there was any such evidence on Prince’s laptop it might have been tampered with before it was finally seized.

Prince’s half-sister, Sharon Nelson, tweeted her dismay about how the laptop was handled. 

“There is so much about Prince’s death and this investigation that troubles me and millions of #Prince fans around the world,” she tweeted Friday.

Interview with Kirk Johnson: 

He was Prince’s friend from the 1980s, a sometime drummer for him, best man at his first wedding, bodyguard and estate manager. But he told investigators even he did not always know what was going on with Prince.

“He’s really, he’s always been private so I mean even from me he would keep me at a distance so you know, I respected that, respected his privacy,” he said in his interview with Det. Chris Wagner.

Not until just before his death did Johnson realize how ill Prince was. “He had been looking just a little frail, but I just, you know…he just always kind of goes up and down,” he said. 

Then, on the way home from an Atlanta gig a week before his death, Prince became unconscious on his private plane, Johnson said. The plane made an emergency landing in Moline, Ill., Prince was given doses of the drug used to treat a narcotics overdose and he was rushed to a local hospital where he was treated and released. 

Was Prince addicted to painkillers, Johnson was asked.

“He never told me that but that’s what I’m finding out,” Johnson said. “I mean and l just figured that out after that time we had to land the plane that this is what…it started to all make sense through just his behavior sometimes and change of mood…That’s why I took the initiative and said let’s go to my doctor because you haven’t been to the doctor, let’s check it all out.”

The day before his death, Johnson took Prince to his longtime local doctor, Michael Todd Schulenberg, who also was interviewed by investigators. On that day, Schulenberg saw Prince and ran some tests and prescribed other medications to help him. A urinalysis came back positive for opioids.

Schulenberg prescribed the opioid painkiller oxycodone to Prince on April 14, 2016, but put it under the name of Johnson. Two years later, on Thursday, Schulenberg agreed to pay $30,000 to settle a federal civil claim for knowingly writing a prescription in someone else’s name, which violates the Controlled Substances Act.

Interviews with Meron Berkure, Prince’s personal assistant:

The transcripts of her interviews show she was reluctant to talk to investigators, saying repeatedly that she and all of Prince’s staff had signed “confidentiality agreements” as a condition of employment. At one point, she said she wanted a lawyer.

“As his personal assistant and knowing (he’s) private, I would like to keep his privacy,” she told Det. Pat Murray.

Murray tried to reassure her she was not in trouble, that investigators were trying to find out more about how Prince had ended up dead. He said investigators already gathered information that Prince was struggling with chemical dependency, and as his personal assistant did she notice if he seemed normal or “out of it” the day before his death?

Berkure didn’t know, only saw him from a “far distance.” She said he went to the doctor the day before for a “checkup.” In another interview with another detective and Sheriff Jim Olson, she said Prince had been unusually quiet.

“He usually emails us and like throughout the day but because he wasn’t feeling well, you know…” she said.

She said he had the “flu” and canceled a performance. But she said she didn’t see any symptoms of the flu. “Unless he shared it with the doctor. He didn’t share it with me,” she said. 

She also had about $3,000 in cash in her purse, which was searched. She said, “I do a lot of like tour book sales and stuff like that.” 

Interview with Ray Roberts

Prince’s personal chef since 2013, Roberts also owns a local restaurant, Peoples Organic, and provided Prince, a vegan, with a daily dinner of appetizer, entre and dessert, and stocked his fridge. The night before Prince’s death, Roberts arrived with a meal: roasted pepper bisque, a salad and a smoothie. Roberts thought Prince didn’t look good, which usually meant he wanted his privacy.

“Roberts stated that night Prince didn’t seem good. Roberts stated Prince looked distressed. Roberts stated Prince looked like he wasn’t feeling good,” the transcript reads. 

(In fact, the dinner didn’t get eaten; Roberts said it was still in his refrigerator during Prince’s memorial lunch later.)

Roberts said Prince’s behavior was “up and down” and that the people around him talked about his health “a lot.” Roberts noticed weight loss.

“Roberts stated he had noticed over the last month Prince had been losing weight. Roberts stated he felt like Prince was eating less and wasn’t drinking any water,” the transcript says.

Roberts told investigators that Prince would be “happy and energetic and then he would be sleeping or not feeling well,” the transcript says. “Roberts stated Prince’s health issue was related to stress from his work.” 

Roberts said his job was to make sure Prince was “eating right and drinking enough fluids.” When Prince would report ailments (such as a sore throat) to Roberts, Roberts would prepare food accordingly.

What If You Buy A Home At The Top Of The Market? A Look At The Real Estate Cycle

One way to tell whether buying a home right now is a good time or not is seeing what the stock market is doing. The stock market reflects earnings expectations 6 – 24 months in advance. You can investigate further and look at sectors in which your location has large exposure e.g. tech in San Francisco, oil in Houston, and banks in New York City.

With the stock market seemingly stuck down 10% from its peak, there is a growing chance that you might be buying at the top of the market in 2018. Exactly what that percentage chance is, nobody knows. Maybe the chance is now 50% for expensive coastal city markets, up from 40% in 2017.

Stocks correct swiftly, while real estate corrects slowly until everybody knows real estate is weakening. Then liquidity dries up and the floor drops out. If the stock market is correcting, it’s time to pay closer attention to any investment you make, especially with leverage.

What we do know about the real estate market is that it moves in cycles due to the desire for economic profits i.e. new construction to meet new demand. Peak new construction tends to occur past peak demand, which ultimately leads to temporary oversupply and lower prices. This bust phase usually lasts between 1-3 years before a price floor is found. We are clearly in the hypersupply/boom phase of the cycle now.

What’s also important to recognize is that every real estate market is at a slightly different phase of its housing cycle. Here’s a nice chart by John Burns Real Estate Consulting which names cities in each phase of the housing cycle.

Given I had three properties in San Francisco with $2,000,000 worth of leverage in 2017, I found it prudent to sell one property and reduce leverage by $815,000 since I feel San Francisco is in the “Maturing Exuberance” stage. Institutional investors have all but pulled out of the California housing market, leaving retail investors fighting for scraps.

Real estate investors can look at the chart above and rationally make an argument that it would be wise to shift exposure from late phase markets to early phase markets to earn more money and protect against downside risk. Buying At The Top Of The Market

Let’s say that despite all the signs that the real estate market is at risk of rolling over, you go ahead and buy property with leverage at the top of the cycle. What happens to your mind and to your money? I’ve got first hand experience since I bought my Lake Tahoe vacation property only one year after the peak.

1) You go in denial at first. You will always stand behind your decision to buy at the very beginning. Even if you see a neighboring home on the market sit for longer or drop their asking price, you will justify your purchase by saying your home has a better layout or nicer amenities. You will tell yourself that you bought your home for a better lifestyle first and foremost.

After about a year, the elation of owning your home fades a little bit. It’s similar to the fading elation of buying a new car with a loan. You are thrilled for the first six months, but that thrill dies down while the car payments stay the same. You’ll go online to see the valuation of imperfect comparable home sales to justify your purchase.

2) You begin to accept your mistake. Between 12 – 24 months, you start realizing that maybe you didn’t make the best purchase after all and start telling yourself, “In the long run, things will be fine,” in order to feel better. But the more you look at homes that sell for less, the more you beat yourself up about your purchase.

You start doing calculations on how much you could have saved on the downpayment or on the monthly cash flow if you had just been a little bit pickier or a little more patient. You look at the nicer homes you could have bought with what you paid and kick yourself a little bit. Finally, you tell yourself, “It’s just money at the end of the day.”

3) You start to think worst case scenarios. Due to leverage, a 10% decline in the value of your home is a 50% decline in your 20% downpayment. Just as the stock market can correct 10% in a month, the real estate market can easily correct 10% in a year. Once the momentum to sell begins in real estate, it starts getting scary, especially if you own a condo in a large building.

During a worst case scenario, you start calculating how long you can keep the house before you run out of savings if you lose your job. You also calculate how low the house can go before it no longer makes sense to keep paying the mortgage. During the worst stage of a correction, you may really begin to freak out because you will know friends who have been laid off. You start wondering when you’ll be next.

4) You start to cut out all excess fat from your budget. The great thing about being rational is that during difficult times, all extraneous expenses get slashed and savings rates go up. You might even try and get a second job or work a side hustle if you really start getting worried. Fear of financial ruin in 2009 is what got me to start Financial Samurai. I needed a cathartic outlet to release my fear. I needed something to do just in case I was one of the thousands of people who got fired from the finance industry that year.

During the financial crisis, I didn’t buy anything. I also hustled harder to build relationships with clients who were my only leverage to keeping my job. Instead of buying groceries, I took as many clients out for lunch and dinner to not only build better relationships, but save on food! Yes, I took leftovers home to feed my wife as well. My clients were also worried about losing their jobs and also wanted to save money. When you go through a crisis with someone and survive, your relationship thrives in good times.

5) You either stick with the game plan, or stick it to the bank. If things get really bad where you’re underwater on your home, you will need to make the crucial decision of either staying current on your mortgage or stop making payments. First, you must realize which states are non-recourse states so they don’t come after your other assets after you welch. By short-selling or foreclosing on your home, not only do you ruin your credit and dignity, you also hurt your neighbors who decided to keep paying.

But in America, it’s often every man and woman for himself. You can foreclose on your home like one financial pro did in 2011. He subsequently got hired by The New York Times to write about money advice and even wrote a book about how to improve your finances! This example is one of the reasons why I’m so bullish on America. It doesn’t matter what mistakes you’ve made or who you are, you can always come back.

Nothing Happens If You Decide To Keep Paying Your Mortgage

If you decide to keep paying your mortgage, then life goes on usually as planned. After all, real estate markets tend to recover over time, and few people go into buying the most expensive thing in their lifetimes without a long-term holding plan. The one thing you will run out of is time.

I bought my Lake Tahoe condo after a 12% correction in 2007. At the time, I thought it was nice to save $100,000 from the original purchase price. Little did I realize the value of my condo would plummet by an additional ~30% since so many of my neighbors decided to foreclose.

I felt like a real dummy buying the condo two years later. I started thinking how nice it would be to have an extra $150,000 in cash sitting in the bank. I felt so bad about my decision that I decided to become super frugal for the next five years, work extra hours in order to get promoted and paid, and start Financial Samurai as a potential way out.

More than 11 years later, I’m at peace with my decision to buy a third property as a delusional 29 year old who thought he couldn’t lose. Valuations have rebounded from the depths of despair, the mortgage balance is 40% lower, and the value of the condo has shrunk to a small portion of my net worth. There is also satisfaction that I didn’t welch on my debt.

Now, I cannot wait to take my little boy up to play in the snow. I cannot wait to show him how to jump in the lake off one of the public piers. I cannot wait to make roast marshmallows on an open fire after a rewarding hike. I cannot wait to tell him fun stories under the stars.

When his mother and I pass, I hope he has his own family to take up to the mountains one day. Maybe he’ll even have a picture of his parents on the mantle smiling and watching over him.
