How To Use AO3 Tags

Want to find a fic but have no idea how to get started? Are you writing a fic and don't know how to tag it? Don't worry, you aren't alone. Tagging is hard and people don't always follow the same rules. But hopefully this will give you a place to start!

Relationships

Character/MC: romantic or sexual pairing with the fic's main character, may be named or referred to by pronouns or MC

Character/OC or Character/Original Character: romantic or sexual pairing with a named individual created by the author

Character/Character/OC: romantic or sexual relationship containing three individuals all involved with each other (note: this is not the correct tag for a love triangle, in that case, both relationships should be tagged separately)

Character/Reader: romantic or sexual pairing with an unnamed main character (you or Y/N), meant to feel as though the person reading the fic is in the story

Character & MC: platonic or familial relationships with the fic's main character, may be named or unnamed and referred to using pronouns or MC

Character & OC: platonic or familial relationships with a named character created by the author

Character & Reader: platonic or familial pairing with an unnamed main character (you or Y/N), meant to feel as though the person reading the fic is in the story

General: there are either no relationships of note in the fic or the fic does not focus on any relationships

The big question is always 'how many relationships should I tag in my fic?' Especially in villa fics, there are multiple pairings and the relationship tag can get convoluted. There is no set answer to the question, but the general rule of thumb is that if it's not a key plot point of the fic, don't add it as a relationship tag. In a villa fic, there are going to be multiple relationships, but other than the main pairing, tagging those relationships doesn't add anything. There's nothing more disappointing than looking for a fic for a specific ship only to learn that it's a background pairing you rarely see. This includes one-off sexual relationships and villa couplings that aren't romantic (and if you want to include those, additional tags are your best friend!).

Rating

General: very rare in LITG, but basically, any fic you'd be okay with a child reading

Teen and Up: fluffy, romantic fics with NO smut

Mature: implies the presence of sex or violence without going into detail

Explicit: detailed description of sex or violence

Not Rated: author did not select a rating, could be any of the above ratings

A lot of people get tripped up on the difference between M and E. When it doubt, think about the envelop analogy: a mature fic tells you that the character sent a letter in an envelope. An explicit fic goes into detail about how the character did it including describing putting the letter into the envelope, the taste of it as they licked the seal, etc. These lines can blur when it comes to chaptered fics; some authors may chose to rate a fic as mature but include explicit scenes, so be sure to check the additional tags.

Archive Warnings

Graphic Descriptions of Violence: gory and descriptive violence, it is up to the author as to what exactly falls under this category

Major Character Death: one of the main characters dies, does not have to happen 'on screen' (note: just because this tag isn't there, doesn't mean that there isn't death, just that the author doesn't consider that character to be a major character in the fic)

Rape/Non-con: pretty self-explanatory, does NOT include consensual rape play (although that SHOULD be included in additional tags)

Underage: any sexual activity in which one or both characters are under the age of 18, does not include kissing

Characters

This is a section for you to include any characters included in the fic. The parties to your pairing should be included here, as well as other characters they interact with. General rule of thumb: if they're just mentioned in passing, you don't have to tag them, but if they have a conversation, it's worth a tag. The big exception to this is villa fics: obviously in a S2 villa fic, every S2 character is going to be mentioned, so you might not need to tag every S2 character unless they contribute to the plot in some way (and there is a tag for 'other love island characters' that exists to capture this). This is entirely up to the author's digression, but as a reader, please remember that just because they're mentioned in the character tags does not mean they are necessarily in a lot of the fic.

Additional Tags

Any tags that don't fit under the other categories. This is where an author can truly tell you what is going to be included in their fic, including any additional triggers that don't fall under the AO3 archive warnings. The nice thing about AO3 tag searches is that it is not exclusive, if you want to filter your search for an alternate universe, AO3 will include all variations of the tag in your search (i.e. AU, alternate universe, and alternate universe-sports AU will all come up on a simple AU search). This is the space to include tropes, triggers, setting, smut/kinks, etc.

Fandom

For the most part, the LITG fandom contains exclusively Love Island The Game-Video game tagged fics. But you will run into the occasional crossover or fusion fic. Crossover fics should be tagged with both fandoms as they contain characters from both. Fusion fics should be tagged with only the LITG tag as they contain exclusively LITG characters in the world of another fandom.

I have such a soft spot for my little late '70s AU. I honestly just love grafatti artist Steve in this world. I'm always tempted to write more in this AU. I might do it someday.

Se The Date, Set The Time ('Cause We Already Know Where We're Going) (Gen | Moden AU| 5,161 words)

This is another idea that had been in my head for a while, and I'm really pleased with how it eventually came together. I had such a clear mental picture of this little girl playing matchmaker and Very Seriously asking Steve all these questions, and it was truly so much fun to write once the full plot came to me.

There Are Strangers I Have Yet to Become (Explicit | Canon/Canon Divergent | 16,060 words)

I can't rec my own Stucky fics without including this one. I don't know if I'd say it's my Very Favorite -- my number one? But I do really like it. I am proud of this one, and the fact that it's my number one in nearly all of my stats feels right. It feels like that should be the case. So.

There's a Light, I Find it At Your Side (Explicit | Canon/Canon Divergent | 4,527 words)

I feel like this fic manages to be both smut, in an unbearably-soft-and-romantic-established-relationship way, and a legitimate Bucky character study of sorts. Which is something I do really like that I did. Also. These two deserve this sort of softness. Always.

Things I'll put in my author's notes for Manna (potential spoilers which I will mark):

1. I'm trying to be as accurate to Will and Hannibal's personalities as possible (given the fic I'm writing lmao) but I should note that Will is 'becoming' just as Reader/Little One is slowly changing. So don't expect the Soft Will from season one— he will eventually be Dark Will entirely.

That doesn't mean we won't have gentle or tender moments of course. I'm enjoying those moments and there will be lots more. I'm just trying to dissuade any readers from expecting me to keep him in season one mode as I'm really not the writer for that at all.

2. If people want to understand the approach I'll be taking going forward, this fic is inspired by Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and The Collector by John Fowles, so while Stockholm Syndrome is tagged and will absolutely be included, it won't be immediate, it will be gradual and decidedly Not A Good Thing.

Unlike other fics I've written in the past I already know what I'm doing with this story, and I won't be changing any planned plot points or character development. I will say it's going to be a lot different to other fics I've written with similar themes, but I'll have to let the fic speak for itself chapter by chapter to show that rather than yell at clouds.

I don't want to heavy spoil or overexplain in some way, but occasionally readers are disappointed I don't write a fic or characters in the ways they specifically would like me to, or would prefer I state how things are ending so they don't read really far in and feel let down.

I try to be as transparent with my fics as possible in regards to this, I'm stubborn and I won't budge when I have my ideas in place.

Do you have any supernatural fic recs?

ANON. i have been waiting since 2019 for someone to ask me this. prepare to regret this decision (FYI: i'm taking all these recs & following notes from my public bookmarks on ao3, which you can find here. i'm cutting the notes short, so if u don't mind spoiler-y drawn-out comments, check that out too if u want!)

deancas focused:

A Reasonable Amount of Trouble by xylodemon -> an spn au where dean is a p.i. and a hunter on the side, cas is still an angel, and they get caught up in a plot that's a mix of seasons 4, 6, 8, and 9. this was my introduction to spn and deancas. the characterization is flawless and the prose is beautiful (very cs pacat-esque). the plot is crafted with close attention to detail and the pacing is perfect

the point of our being by noviembre -> a post-s15 fix-it that takes place immediately after the penultimate episode. noviembre is undoubtedly my favorite spn writer of all time. one of the best dean voices i've ever come across. this ties up the narrative threads into a beautiful, sound, satisfying ending, and both destiel & saileen survive. despite the odds, they're happy.

i projected onto dean winchester when i was twelve years old and now im making it your problem by alittleduck (amidsizedfrog) -> another post-finale fix it. and, to date, the funniest thing i've ever read. every fic in this series has a good balance between scenes that make u laugh so hard u hurt ur throat and Scenes That Make You Want To Gurgle Cement.

So Says The Sword by komodobits -> a s4 au and a fandom classic for a reason. if u haven't read this, i'm of the firm belief it's best to go in as blind as possible. but definitely keep this verse in the back of ur mind while reading: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father" (matthew 10:29)

sir this is a wendy's by noviembre -> yall remember when misha collins said that a modern au deancas would be like if a wendy's janitor and the president of the usa fell in love? well noviembre took that seriously and now we're here. and u should all be thankful bc it's somehow the single funniest and most romantic thing i've ever read

the pie isn’t a metaphor (it’s just pie) by noviembre -> post-finale s15 domestic deancas fic that's the emotional equivalent of drinking tea and lying under a warm weighted blanket. it makes me so happy and i think abt it every time i eat a pastry. i just sit there chewing like “dean and cas are eating fresh pie in their kitchen” and it puts a smile on my face.

Muscle Memory by komodobits -> a "50 first dates" au that i think abt every single day. i'm not joking. it's so sad and touching and sweet and unexpectedly funny, and no one writes deancas like komodobits. it just FEELS so them and i'm obsessed w it.

Strandlines by aeli_kindara -> au where s4 cas meets stanford-era dean. dean's voice and characterization is incredibly in-character with the early seasons and his voice doesn't falter once. and of course castiel! robotic s4 cas with this tremendous power and this fierce yet wavering loyalty to heaven that eventually focuses solely on dean! likewise, his character is spot-on and i enjoyed reading from his pov immensely.

[podfic] right hand on his rife, swore it on the bible by be_brave13 for quensty, floorsirens -> u can't possibly expect me NOT to include this. YES my friend and i wrote the fic but be_brave13's love and appreciation for it makes it feel like a completely separate work. my favorite podfic (and gift) of all time so i implore u to give it a listen.

something suddenly everywhere by noviembre -> the finest post-s15 fix-it of all time. cas is in the empty, they've defeated god, jack is gone, and all that's left is sam, eileen, dean, a bunker, and trying to move on. i know i already said that but this is the same author so it still counts! i cried, i laughed, i grieved, i jumped from excitement. it's a rollercoaster of emotions. it should be put behind a velvet rope at a museum so we can all gather around and clap.

To Boldly Go by 8daysuntiltheapocalypseiguess -> au where dean writes star trek fanfiction. it follows him from the beginning of the show to the older seasons and is told entirely thru his fic summaries, reader commentary, and livejournal dms. warning that it is unfinished, but it's a masterpiece

Loveletter (Dear Eileen) by voynichs (Xenerik) -> a short and beautiful meditation about love and eileen from sam's pov. it's only 300 words but it feels like 15k. definitely at the top of my fave saileen fics of all time. when i first read it i stayed up until 2 am crying abt it

Livin' on a Prayer by Dredfulhapiness -> EILEEN MEETING EARLY SEASONS DEAN AND SAM I'M SCREAMING. do u understand how this could've changed the timeline but, more importantly, me as a person. eileen there when dean and sam were trying to find a way out of the deal, there when everything happened with ruby, there for dean's resurrection, there before they met cas, there after sam dies and dean retires and cas goes m.i.a. and DEALING with the aftermath of a foiled apocolypse. everyone hates the winchesters but the winchesters are gone and all that's left is eileen to deal with the brunt of it.

With Hands Clasped by Xenerik -> a handful of snippets from the eileen wedding that explores gender and religion and love so beautifully. i haven't been able to read it completely yet, but i can tell this is going to be another saileen fave.

The Love Story of the Runner Up by Margo_Kim -> told from the perspective of a guy cas had a brief affair with as a semi-drunken story he tells a friend in a bar. it's technically deancas but since cas's relationship with another man takes main focus, i elected to put it here.

Ten Years by Margo_Kim -> a bela talbot character study and the best i've been able to find, no contest. *rowena voice* good girls are pathetic here's to evil skanks <3

The Archangel Gabriel Is Dead by seizethefire -> fics that have half a million kudos in my mind. it's about how and why rafael comes to think that god is dead. it expertly explores the familial relationship between gabriel, lucifer, michael, and rafael. it's devastating and beautiful in equal measure. definitely a personal favorite and one i think everyone should read

put them in a box somewhere by amidsizedfrog -> a mary & dean fic told from mary's pov from before she died. a gut-wrenching story about performative/toxic masculinity and internalized homophobia and mothers.

Well my honest opinion would be that whoever thinks this really does not have much of an understanding of the characters in MDZS, or the plot for that matter. Whether this is something that some truly see in the novel or something they put in fanfic, it's just bizarre.

Firstly, only a few people made assumptions with regards to WWX's feelings towards LWJ. Really it was only the juniors who noticed something between them. JC was in denial the whole time (across both WWXs lives) until he couldn't deny it any longer - and even then he tried! Personally I think WQ noticed WWX acted differently around LWJ and at some point WN picked up on something between them as well. But bar that, most people wrongly thought the pair hated each other! So that's just wrong right from the start!

WWX is extremely emotionally intelligent, he understands people very well and that includes himself as well. Yes, he lies to himself and pushes his true feelings down at times - but this is a coping mechanism. He feels so deeply, his only way to cope about certain emotions that might bring him pain, is to play them down or convince himself they are different to what they are.

WWX is just trying to protect his heart. He lies to himself about his feelings for LWJ because to him, the latter wasn't interested. Yet WWX was still drawn towards him every time they met, because LWJ is the only one he's ever truly wanted. By the time WWX and LWJ have sex, WWX is more than sure of his feelings for LWJ! In fact just before all of this, WWX is so sure of his feelings he's absolutely terrified LWJ might not feel the same way.

So I think any idea of a fanon or fanfic WWX that is as emotionally dense as 'straight boy' WWX is, is just so far from the actual character, I don't see the point in them reading the novel, being a fan or writing fic using WWXs name if this is their take on him, as it's clearly not the character MXTX created.

As for LWJ having sex with this warped version of WWX, he simply wouldn't. As much as LWJ loves WWX, he would not have meaningless sex with him just because the latter 'doesn't mind'. Just looking at the end of chapter 95 and chapter 96, where WWX thinks LWJ has only just sobered up and is upset that they had sex. This scene should be enough to show anyone that this is not in LWJs character. WWX desperately tries to salvage their relationship because he loves LWJ so much he wants to be with him anyway he can. So he makes it out it was just something friends do! LWJ is so distraught at the possibility WWX didn't have romantic feelings for him, yet shared an extremely intimate moment with him anyway. How can anyone think he would just have sex with WWX if he thought WWX wasn't interested in him. It just wouldn't happen.

So again, I think that this fanon idea or whatever it is, is just so far from the truth it's just strange! Anyone who wants this to be canon should just go find another novel to read quite frankly!

It can take time to understand your sexuality and shaming a character who actually realised it pretty fast considering the circumstances, is just shallow and ironically makes them the "oblivious" ones they so often like to accuse WWX of being. It's obvious WWX would have realised his sexuality a lot sooner if LWJ had given him a little hint back when they were teens. Which isn't LWJ's fault of course, because people seem to forget he was coming to terms with his own feelings at the time as well! But if he'd given WWX a sign, he'd have been spurred on and pursued LWJ until they were a couple.

When should you tag gen and when M/M, F/F, or whatever else you have available in terms of romantic relationship categories? Would a mostly gen fic that has some flirting happening between characters that isn't the focus of their dynamic still count as gen? Can something with outspoken romance still be tagged gen under specific circumstances, for example when romance is just one of the many relationship states explored for the main dynamic alongside friends and enemies? I tend to tag things with gen when the plot and the platonic dynamic carry a considerably greater amount of importance than any eventual romance that may happen, but I don't know if that's going against the conventions fandom has in place. Gen always confused me as a term haha

There are three conventions:

Any story that heavily focuses on plot and platonic relationships is gen provided the background ships are canon.

Any story that heavily focuses on plot and platonic relationships is gen provided the background relationships are het.

Gen stories contain no on-page romance. Canon ships can be still together, but any focus on their relationship, including light flirting is not gen. All non-canon ships are not gen.

People make exceptions for things like married OCs showing up as part of casefic or whatever.

Nobody's going to articulate #2 in those terms, but if you observe the absolutely not gen things people mark as gen, that's what they're doing: plausibly future canon in their eyes (i.e. het) can show up in a plotty fic and not make it non-gen.

AO3 tends to use something more like 3. It's a very ship-centric fic space, so gen means complete absence of all shipping.

This "it's just a plotty story" nonsense is for FFN, which sees shipping, and especially other people's ships, as anomalous. There's every single genre and then ~romance~. AO3 sees fic as whatever genre plus or minus a ship.

In advance of the Klapollo Minibang dropping a bunch of reading material for Klapollo fans (which I'm participating in!), I've decided to compile a reclist. All of these fics are SFW, hosted on AO3, and complete. I've done my best to source the authors' Tumblrs, if they have one.

A lot of my bookmarks with Klapollo are all really popular fics, so I decided to go through the tag picking for some less popular fics. The results are a mix of fics you've probably heard of and/or read, and some you probably haven't.

My Notes: You can, imo, read this without having read the Narumitsu-centric prequel (but you should read that anyways!). This fic can stand alone. I love the general laid-back atmosphere in this work -- even at its most tense, they're still on vacation. Almost all the stakes are emotional.

Or, when Apollo comes home from Khura'in only to learn that Prosecutor Gavin is avoiding him, the last thing he expected was for Gavin to offer to let Apollo stay at his house while he looks for a new apartment.

My Notes: It’s been a while since I last read this fic, but I love the progression of the relationship in this fic.

What better way to show you care than with the beauty of art? Cohen simply had to show his greatest muse how much he adores them. They provide him with inspiration, he cares about them more than anyone else in this place.

With you in mind, Cohen put on an entire private exhibit for you. He made sure every piece of art sung the same tune. He wanted you to experience one big message when he shows you.

He wants it all to say that he loves you.

Cohen puts his heart and soul into his art. He made it strictly private so it could just be you and him. Such art is not meant for prying eyes!

It would ruin everything.

Cohen wrote the invitation himself. He even gave you a mask to go along with it. Everything was then wrapped in a box and sent to where you lived in Rapture. It was just time to wait now!

He made it all seem like you were just coming in to be his muse, inspiration. In reality you were coming in for much more than you expected. Much much more....

When you approach Cohen, wearing the mask he gave you with confusion, he grins.

"Right this way! Have a look, my rabbit."

Then Cohen pulls the curtain aside, blessing your eyes with...

Horrors.

Your jaw slacks open as you look around. The studio smelled of blood and rot. Plaster sculptures are portrayed in all sorts of sporadic poses. The paintings that depicts strange artistic depictions of hearts and intimacy smell of metal and quite possibly lead.

You back away, completely unaware of Cohen locking to doors behind you. When you turn to leave, Cohen looks at you eagerly. You are cut off from the door when he sees the fear and disgust on your face.

"Dear, why do you look at me so?"

You want to run, you need to run.

As Cohen walks away from the locked door in an attempt to hold you, you dart away. You shake your head and plead with him. He's always been a psychopath, you hate that you're scared of him enough to follow his invitations.

“Why are you running? I did this for you!” Cohen yells, stepping closer. "Is my work not enough for you!?"

You scramble away from him but he grabs your arm. You struggle but Cohen holds you still with a frown. Oh you're so dead....

"Let me go, Mr Cohen! You're hurting me!" You plead to him, stopping your pulling while tightens his grip.

“This hurts me more than it hurts you.” Cohen answers bitterly, glaring at you. "I make you a gift and you HATE it!"

"I-I don't hate it...!" You try to appeal to him but he shakes his head.

"Fine, fine... maybe it isn't enough for you. I just need to come up with something grander..." Cohen hums, eying the plaster sculptures in thought. He then looks back at you. You hate the look in his eyes. "Well... if you didn't like this gift. Then maybe you can provide me some inspiration to make something you'll like?"

You give a look of confusion before he pulls you along through the studio. You plead to him more when he stops in front of buckets of plaster. You give him a look of worry and he ignores it.

"Maybe you're right... I need a new way to express my love for you."

It's only then he turns to you with a wicked grin. Your heart stops when he picks up a bucket and turns to you.

"I just need you to help me."

I'm mostly into writing original stuff right now, but I'd like to write a fic from Yurio's perspective some day. I've written at least 1 fic for most of my favorite fandoms, including Yuri On Ice. I think it could be fun to try writing for a book fandom one day.

ANGST FLUFF RELATIONSHIPS: As I mentioned above, I will write Familial, Platonic, and Romantic relationships. READER INSERTS: Please include Gender and Pronouns. I do tend to default to Female because I am Female and that is what I do for some reason. I'm about as inclusive as Abe, you need to spell it out for me. OC INSERTS: If you like one of my OCs enough to want to see more of them, by all means, ask for it. I do not typically write for anyone else's OCs (this is largely due to the fact that I know my own OCs, not yours and for some reason in the past people didn't understand that they needed to tell me about their OC). But this is Clone High, this is cringe, this is satire and parody. If you really believe in me, send me your OCs. If you, for some demented reason, think your OC and my OC need to interact, by all means, I will write it. Additional Things. Disabilities, Insecurities, Episodes, Crack Fics.

(T's main acct (i can't believe tumblr still won't let you ask from a sideblog but Oh Well)) you know i have to ask about the TSATS replacement fic because you keep telling us about the length of your outline but not much else 👀

Boo, bad Tumblr. Glad you specified otherwise I'd have been "oh, new person? Hiiii!" which would have been a bit awkward, whoops!

TSATS Replacement Fic, huh. Now, what can I say about this that won't spoil it (you know what I'm like with my longfic projects :P) but will still reveal a little more about it...

Well, it's exactly what it says on the tin - I did not like TSATS and have many issues with it, so I've decided to work on a Solangelo quest fic that fits the implications of TON but also satisfies the itches TSATS did not (as opposed to the non-Solangelo centric one better known at this point as Eclipse!)

So, what does this include? A prophecy, Apollo being a frantic dad, Hades being unhappy about the whole situation as well, plenty of time to spotlight Will and his trauma, with Nico being the good, loving and supportive boyfriend we know he deserves to be - and an unexpected third member of the quest whose identity I will leave a secret.

It should be keeping in line with the characterisations from TOA and earlier, if I can get this right. There is one new arrival from TSATS I am intrigued about enough to potentially let them join in the fun, but otherwise basically everything that originates in TSATS is being completely ignored.

In terms of the actual plot, I don't want to talk too much about what will happen, but I will confirm a few things that won't:

Thing one: Solangelo will not go to Tartarus. I could not come up with any scenario where Apollo and Hades would stand for this, and I already have the story where they take their sons' places.

Thing two: The voice calling Nico is not Bob. There is, however, someone who does need saving.

Thing three: There will not be relationship drama for the sake of drama. I don't believe in screwing with romantic relationships just to create drama. That's not to say they'll always agree with each other, but at no point will there be any serious Drama between Will and Nico

And just to give you something to chew over, while this isn't yet set in stone and may still be tweaked, currently the quest prophecy (the one that in this fic will be the one Rachel uttered at the end of TON), is looking something like this:
