I just realized if I want to write about Oppenheimer for my final paper for my west class I probably have to rewatch it and it is So Damn Long. I’m also writing about it in comparison to a production I saw of Doctor atomic (the Oppenheimer opera (yes there’s an Oppenheimer opera)) but that will be a little bit easier bc I’m pretty sure no footage exists of that production so like at least I don’t have to rewatch that
#if curious the class is like. stories about the American west#and it’s fantastic.#one of the best I’ve ever taken#I was this close to writing about breaking bad for my final lowkey but I don’t have a Thesis#and I do have a Thesis here which is that Oppenheimer sucks#well. more. I want to look at how the movie Oppenheimer uses tropes of westerns#like. the single figure of an empty west reshaping the world#and the like the attraction of that as a story#and the thing is that it just like. is not fucking true#where they were resting wasn’t empty there were people within a couple of miles of where they tested#*testing#and they made a conscious decision to test anyway bc they decided that they couldn’t risk breaking secrecy#and that is NOT in the movie#and I think a lot of discourse I’ve seen about the movie about whether it glamourizes Oppenheimer or not#is kinda informed by that#bc my take on it is like I don’t think it’s depicting oppenheimer as a good person#but it is still depicting him as a story#like his guilt and experiences are very abstract and Greek tragedyesque promethean whatever whatever#it examines things in grand arcs and asks the question of to what degree he is complicit#but doesn’t show that conversation#doesn’t show anything beyond the very abstract#whereas the opera though it is hella stylized due to genre#when possible it draws from the historical record and uses the actual things people said#however it also recognizes that like there’s a lot that didn’t make it into the historical record and tries to fill those gaps#like. not perfect still and like while I think the opera did better there’s still much to be said for like. accessibility esp#anyway that’s the essay outline I was procrastinating it by posting but I think that’s basically the outline right there

Girl, what? So wtf was the Alley Talk in Brigade, the Stock Talk in Sheridan, the Family Style-Two-Tops-Booths? Talk in Braciole, the Apartment Talk in Pasta and the Table Talk in Omelette??? Not to mention Syd and Carmy hugging it out post fire suppression test in Bolognese and staring lovingly into each other's eyes right in front of Marcus in Omelette?🤨

I'm so grateful that the only GG fans that care about the light novels are the ones that can be normal about things because Lightning the Argent goes from the rawest scenes of carnage imaginable to Ky Kiske doing something mildly religious like offering a short, silent, prayer for someone that got mangled to death by WMD dragons, and I just know that, in the wrong hands, those brief religious moments would generate the most annoying goddamn memes you could ever imagine
#textpost#I have a mountain of beef with catholicism specifically and am negative percent religious#But the punchline to so many Ky jokes is just “ha ha catholic” like come onnnnn get creative#Religion on its own isn't bad. Look instead at how an individual interacts with it and judge from there#Untapped potential in how Ky's consistently depicted praying to Mary/an unspecified female saint for example#Actually... How come I've never seen anyone analyze that aspect of his belief?#His parents died when he was pretty young (iirc) so their influence couldn't've been too much of a contributing factor in that#Maybe he was closer to his mom in the brief time he had with his parent(s)?#Almost all of the Holy Order knights/members they've ever shown have been male too#So I wonder if maybe it's more like the calm/uncombative protective presence of a sacred woman is comforting to him?#It's definitely a stark contrast to the types of things he's generally exposed to in his daily life in any case#Another interesting contrast is how much Sol DOESN'T like religion#He's got some sarcastic lines about God and stuff even pre-Gearification. Wonder what the story with that is...#Anyway Ky only expressing his religion in private moments is interesting to me too#I can't think of an instance where he ever forced it on someone else or tried to explain something as happening just because God willed it#He's smart and logical and yet he still has this spiritual component...#Man is his character is complex. Studying this blond kid under a microscope...

My favorite flavor of romantic NeuviFuri is always Neuvillette being soft and reverent towards Furina. But I like adding some Top Furina/Bottom Neuvillette to the mix and making Furina just as smitten to Neuvillette as he is for her.
I imagine once she gains more confidence, Furina starts to take the lead in their intimate moments. Her dearest Iudex is beautiful, afterall. She loves admiring Neuvillette's body, kissing and touching every part of him, leaving marks across his body. Neuvillette is left breathless and completely pliant under her. He's not used to all the praise and attention Furina is giving him.

As a child, Diluc always wanted to travel Teyvat. He liked the idea of going on business trips to see new lands, tasting all sorts of new foods and getting to meet new people. During his four-year absence from Mondstadt after his father's death, the irony was not lost on him in the least as he went along with Alice's advice.
#hc; diluc#//I like to think he and Kaeya had days where they were sprawled on the floor looking at atlases and shit#//Pointing out places they wanna go (Luc was Very Adamant abt not going to Sumeru bc he Still hadn't recovered of Kae's lil trip)#//Diluc for certain wanted to go to Fontaine so bad. He wanted to see an opera with his fam. He still hasn't seen one bc he still clung to#this childish want to see one only w Kaeya in tow like he'd always wanted before (Crepus too; but Crepus is dead so Kae is the only other)#//Kaeya always wanted to see Natlan. Specifically bc of the stories told of the Muratan people and wanting to learn more abt them for Jean#//But also bc the others books he read documenting what the place was like and with paintings depicting the place made it seem so beautiful#//He wanted (still kinda does) to go there and collect so many things for his little treasuress#//He however is a bit less inclined to go esp nowadays; considering his fight with Diluc#//He can't help but wonder if the Archon might be On Sight regarding him; considering his heritage and considering their Ideal#//Plus he loathes the idea of having to go there alone. He's considered bringing Klee; but then going back to the previous; he would#much rather Klee NOT be there to witness if the Archon would try and smite him for daring the trespass into their nation#//It's a ridiculous fear in his eyes; but at the same time he doesn't want to risk it with the Pyro Archon of all the Seven#//Shit; why. Rambling#hc; kaeya#//Bleh; thats there now#//Ironically Luc’s favorite nation was Sumeru. thought it was the most beautiful nation. He liked Apam Woods & Pardis Dhyai the most#//And he really liked the foods from there too

a few days ago i (re)watched the 25th anniversary concert of les misérables and. oh god. i forgot how much this musical did éponine dirty
#partly javert too but éponine is the clearer victim#of simplifying complex characters into more easily lovable (or villainous in javert's case) archetypes#so the audience can root or despise them accordingly#(i think cocciante's nddp is also guilty of this but imo there this adaptation choice makes more sense and is better executed)#say what you want about the 2012 movie and you'd probably be right... but at least they tried and partially succeded in giving éponine back#her complex moral ambiguity with not giving cosette's letter to marius and selfishly goading him into a sorta murder/suicide plan#which more or less is what happens in the book#(javert is also allowed to be more than a caricatural villain. i mean... russell crowe's singing is. Not Great#but at least the script show the character's many layers. or it attempts to#nvm that i don't even consider javert a villain. he's 100% an antagojist but far from the main villain of the story#he's both victim and perpetrator. the law and society at large are the villains here. he's actually a good cop... which is the point!)#éponine in the book is a multilayered bordering on grey and easily the most complex female character of the whole book#but god. in the musical she's just there pining for marius and being all Saint Éponine of Saint Michel#it's insufferable. i mean i still like her but she's TOO perfect. i wouldn't have had such an issue with it if i didn't read the book#.... probably. but damn we were robbed. les mis miniseries with actually accurate depictions of the characters/the plot in general when???#(preferably made by someone who *understands* the book. tyvm)#having said that i still love the musical to pieces. the music is great the songs are beautiful the story is touching#and the epilogue makes me uglycry every damn time. but i think we really missed a chance with éponine ngl#val speaks#txt

phoenix is actually an awesome character as long as you dissect the fact that he has canonically hit a woman, doesnt give af about children being in relationships with adults, and lets his daughter advertise her panties

if ozai had a proper backstory/character regarding his family and personality instead of just "ozai = ultimate villain = ultimate evil (literally, like the summation of all kinds of 'evil')" and got more screentime, then it would have made the ultimate lesson of atla as a series more viable, like the zuko redemption arc, that there is no "true black / white" nor "ultimate good / evil"
he was such an 1D character in the series it's so intriguing when ao3 spices up his character

rly insane how half the disco elysium fandom like.. completely fails at understanding even basic messaging of the game that even i got while being really bad at understanding themes lol. like yeah sure i relate hard to harrys mental health and substance use shit, and yeah, i think kim is fun and goofy, and i like their dynamic and also want to see on screen gay sex.
but like.. this is The Politics Game and half of the fanbase has taken from it exclusively "omg my blorbos meow meows babygirls" and seemingly failed to engage w the political text of the story. like ok if you came out of disco elysium and saw a man who is like.. at best 1 week sober from extreme substance abuse that has made him actively suicidal and threatening to others around him, who is desperately in need of actual, urgent help, AND who is a POLICE OFFICER, like, THEE person who absolutely should NOT be a cop, on top of, yknow, that, like, police are bad already??? a man who has canonically committed serious and traumatic police brutality due to this very instability and disregard for anyones safety and has continued to be allowed to occupy this position? and you get an ending in which his co-workers who have basically just been watching from the sidelines being like.. exasperated at him but not actually doing anything about the massive risk to himself and all these civilians safety just going "well, yknow, hes a good guy after all, and he hasnt been getting drunk and waving his police issued firearm at frightened civilians for a whole week, and he sure saw a bug, so, like, just come back to work man" and thought that was a satisfying and good ending...... after all the talk abt copaganda white ppl is the same
#disco elysium spoilers#de spoilers#and to be clear i dont think de is copaganda.#i think it fails in its clear attempt to depict the police as inherently morally bankrupt tools of power#bc it doesnt. just. let you stop being a cop.#like its undermined IMO by the fact that you cannot actually get an ending that would be good but its still treated like it is#but i think the rest of the game IS v critical of cops#which is why its insane that it seems to fly over ppls heads#i also dont think 'harry cant stop being a cop' is an inherent story flaw btw!#part of the tragedy of this story i think is ppl only give a shit abt harry bc he is a cop.#eg kim would not give harry the patience time compassion he shows him if harry was a regular civilian acting the way he does#being seen as worth helping in this critical episode is dependent on being a cop for harry#particularly venomously shown w pigs i think#like. thats how harry would be treated if he wasnt a REAL cop. thats how wed see him.#but anyway point is. being a cop may be literally inescapable in harrys pov bc he has no other point of reference for social worth anymore#however.#my issue is that its FRAMED as a fulfilling happy ending. not something he is stuck in. not an exercise in futility.#continuing to be police is not a tragedy or a cowardly attempt to remain socially worthwhile#its the good thing to do to heal and help others in the end.#which i think betrays not only reality. but also the messages of the game itself about police throughout#so yeah

LMAOOOOOO I'm laughing my ass off so hard😂😂😂😂😂 This is my favorite activity. Checking the search on twitter for Clear Card related terms (in Japanese, I never check them in ENG because I want to keep my blood pressure healthy), finding lots of people who are making great use of the campaign that's allowing to watch the entire season 1 of the anime for free on Youtube (it's limited to Japan only, though), finding many fans squirming when they reach episode 22 & can't contain their eagerness to know more, witnessing the same fans scrambling to read the source material to know what happened next, and watching their account turning into a "YUNA D. KAITOOOOO!!!!!" parade - especially when they reach the end of volume 14.
I think it's a weird messed up sense of fun akin to what some fans experience when they watch a poor oblivious new victim reaching the Acid Tokyo Arc in Tsubasa, or getting into Tokyo Babylon for the first time. 😂😂😂😂
I can't stop cackling.
(By the way, the all end up loving the twist and the story as a whole. 😁 I bet this is the kind of "reaction journey" CLAMP expected from their fans and it must be quite satisfactory whenever that happens.)
