I noticed there was a large archipelago on the styraphant's planet map that appears completely gray, is there any reason for this? Is the island uninhabitable or have the styraphants just not bothered to settle there because it's so far out?
Good eye! It's both because it is kind of far away to get to and because of that, it is inhabited by a different species of sophont! I'm still going back and forth on their design at the moment, but by the time the sytraphants arrive there they are pretty well established. I'm thinking historically, most styraphant populations avoid major conflict by respecting both classical and newly established migratory routes. So a lot of their thought process about em is "well they're using it still and we don't really NEED it.." That isn't to say that there are not SOME small settlements there, but those typically have to be in less than ideal areas or deal with the conflict that comes with moving onto someone else's property.

I feel like I need to reiterate this, Americans, we do not EVER turn anyone in for the reward money, because the reward money is a LIE!
There will be a reason they come up with for not giving it to you. Even Nancy, the snitch at McDonald's, who everyone in the world knows turned in Luigi Mangione, will not get a penny of the reward money. The reason she is getting is that she called 911 instead of the tip line.
But there are other reasons, like, the cops already had the info you gave them from "other sources". "Lots of other people" called in the same tip. The reward was "up to" the amount promised, so you're getting $1.50. You didn't do the proper paperwork before you gave the tip. And just about anything else you can think of.
They won't give any money out until the person is actually convicted, not just arrested. It could take years for a case to even get to court. If the suspect takes a plea deal, then did your info really lead to a "conviction"? Or by the time the suspect is convicted, suddenly the money is not there. Reward money? What reward money? It isn't like they have it sitting in a box waiting to hand it over to you after the conviction. No, after the conviction, now they need to try to find the amount they put up for the reward. And who's budget is that going to come out of? Who wants to put that money in your pocket instead of their own? Okay? Understand? Got it?
You never get the reward money!

Let's talk phonics!
Every English vowel can make two basic sounds: what's called a short sound, and a long sound. Take the letter E, for example. A short E can be found in the words met, bet, and set. A long E can be found in the words meet, seat, and treat. (You might notice the two vowels in a row in these words; double vowels in English almost always make the vowel sound long!)
In standard American English, "coffee" is pronounced with a short O sound, such as in the words dog, log, and cough. The IPA symbol for this vowel sound is 蓲. An easy way to spell this sound without using IPA is "ah" -- as in when the doctor asks you to stick out your tongue and "say 'aahh!'"
This is not to be confused with the short A sound, as in the words apple, cat, and axe. The IPA symbol for this vowel sound is 忙. An easy way to spell this sound without using IPA is simply "a" (with no "h" after it).
Accents will slightly (or largely) alter our vowel sounds and how we might think to spell them; "coffee" sounds different with a British accent than an American one. But now that we know how to talk about vowel sounds, let's rephrase:
Does "ko-fi" sound identical to "coffee" (typically, for Americans: a short O followed by a long E)?
Or does it rhyme with lo-fi (typically, for Americans: a long O followed by a long I)?
Or does it sound like something else?

it's so fucking frustrating to be in college and know everyone uses chatgpt and to be tempted by it constantly while also knowing intellectually that it doesn't work and it's a bad idea. like, i hang out in the library a lot, and i see people using chatgpt on assignments almost every day. and i know it isn't a good way to learn, because it's not really "artificial intelligence" so much as it is an auto text generator. and it gives you wrong information or badly worded sentences all the time. but every week i stare down assignments i don't want to do and i think man. if only i could type this prompt into a text generator and have it done in 10 minutes flat. and i know it wouldn't work. it wouldn't synthesize information from the text the way professors want, it wouldn't know how to answer questions, it just spits out vaguely related words for a couple paragraphs. but knowing my classmates get their work done in 10 minutes flat with it while i fight every ounce of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in my body is infuriating.

Remember how Miss Pauling said she'd spent her whole life to help the administrator....
She didn't even know what she was helping with, but she wanted to be by her side, until she learned how deeply personal and self destructive the whole thing was... and in the end there never was going to be a 'place' set for her :^(
