let's kill hilbert is a great hera and minkowski episode in how well it displays some of the best and worst of their dynamic (and highlights the source of their ongoing miscommunication.)
"i'm doing the best i can here, so just, please, try to sound a little less patronizing?" / "i'm not being patronizing, i'm being critical." sums up the disconnect: that what minkowski sees as professional criticism and an attempt to combat future problems, hera takes as a personal attack. ultimately, minkowski's suggestions to lighten her burden are well-meaning and closer to what hera needs than any faith in her ability to do her job (there are things she can't do, and things she shouldn't have to), but she's been made to believe her worth as a person - and her continued survival - hangs in the balance. and so, the scene that leads to that one, where minkowski takes the navigation controls from hera: "no, it's fine! i can -" / "i don't care what you can, give me the controls right now." stands out for the wording used, the different things that are meant by it, and what it reinforces for hera: i can't do this. i'm not good enough.
it makes sense that the resolution, where minkowski tells hera, "you are the smartest person i've ever met, hera; focus that intelligence [...]" is one of the moments she thinks of at the end of memoria. because it's a turning point for their relationship, because it's a show of trust ("i trust you" coming very shortly after "i need to know that i can trust you."), because it's a show of respect and the only moment in the entire show where someone refers to hera by rank, but also...
i think there's something to be said for how minkowski's voice at the end of memoria is a direct expression of belief in hera's abilities, while eiffel's "use the force, luke" shows that what hera values about eiffel is... well, eiffel, but i think it's also true that both of these things show something about communication. they show hera's understanding of eiffel and minkowski's unique communication styles, what they say and what they mean by it, and that shows what they mean to her.
"you are the smartest person i know, hera" (a slight alteration from the original line that has a ton of implications re: context and memory) isn't really about her intelligence, or even her ability. contextually, it's a direct counterstatement to "i don't care what you can" and, by association, and through their connection - minkowski's voice becomes, quite literally, like eiffel's, another voice in her head counteracting what pryce has made hera believe about herself.

I really enjoyed working on this request! I think it was a little longer than i was planning but i would love to continue exploring a more fantazy style world for my characters!!

As you trailed behind your master, the esteemed sage of the kingdom, you couldn't help but feel dwarfed by the towering walls of the palace. Each step you took seemed small in comparison to the grandeur that surrounded you.
Your master had been summoned to attend a crucial meeting with the young emperor, who had recently ascended to the throne after the tragic loss of their mother, the late empress. The country was gripped by the ravages of a merciless plague, and the weight of responsibility rested heavily on the shoulders of the young ruler.
With each passing moment, the air seemed to grow heavier, carrying the weight of grief and uncertainty that plagued the nation. The palace, once a symbol of opulence and power, now held an air of somberness as it grappled with the aftermath of loss.
As you quickened your steps to keep up with your master's hurried pace, you couldn't help but wonder what role you would play in this meeting.
Your steps came to a halt as you stood before a towering door, its majestic presence adorned with glistening jewels and shimmering gold. The heavy doors slowly swung open, revealing a grand chamber bathed in soft light. As you stepped inside, your eyes fell upon a young man seated upon the magnificent throne, his regal demeanor exuding a mix of authority and youthfulness.
Your master, radiating confidence and wisdom, advanced with a steady stride towards the young emperor. Their years of knowledge and experience seemed to lend an air of respectability to the room, commanding attention and reverence. You, on the other hand, found yourself waddling nervously behind, feeling small and insignificant in the presence of such power.
The young emperor's gaze shifted from your master to you, curiosity flickering in his eyes. A momentary silence hung in the air, as if the weight of the world rested upon this encounter.
One thing you appreciated was the rule that the sages were the only people that didn't have to kneel when meeting a ruler, because you were sure that you would trip with your own feet if you tried to.
"Your majesty," your master began, their voice filled with a gentle yet commanding tone. "We have come in response to your personal summons, fully aware of the significance behind this audience."
The young emperor nodded solemnly, acknowledging the unspoken understanding between you all. The weight of the plague that ravaged the kingdom hung heavy in the air, an unspoken truth that reverberated within the depths of your being. Your mind brimmed with questions, thoughts swirling like a tempest, but caution held your tongue.
In that moment, as your master conversed with the emperor, your gaze met his fiery ruby eyes. It felt as if time stood still. The intensity in his gaze hinted at hidden depths, a soul burdened by the weight of responsibility and loss. There was something captivating about the way he held himself, an aura of strength and vulnerability intermingled.
“You may be wondering why i asked both of you to come here” the emperor said
“Me and my royal alchemist been working on an elixir to eliminate the plague once and for all, but we both lack the magic you sages poses to actually start producing it” the emperor looked at you “it should all work on theory, but without magic to start the process we are hand tied”
The emperor slowly started to descend the stairs, their eyes lock on you
“I know that i'm asking for a lot but please i implore that your apprentice stays in my kingdom as my royal mage and help me save my people”
Before you could speak your master put a hand on your back
“My apprentice will do their best”
With that your fate was seal, it was an honor to be able to work as a royal mage but being the royal mage of THE emperor was another level

Your magical abilities were no joke, the young emperor was more than impressed and with a few magic tricks and the alchemist abilities the plague was no longer around
But as the plague started to disappear something new was blossoming in the kingdom
The seed of love and the seeds of obsession…
The emperor started to notice small things about you, the way you said the magic word or how cute your focused face was when you studied your ancient book.
The emperor was walking towards your chambers with a fragrant rose in hand, his feelings were too much to bear and he needed to confess.
“Now that the plague is gone, what do you plan to do?” The emperor heard a voice coming from your chambers
“I don’t know…probably get back at my studies in the sage tower or something like that” the heart of the emperor sunk in realization.now that the plague was gone you had no other reason to stay in his kingdom.
“Maybe we could go together?, i mean only if you want too”
his despair quickly turned to anger as he recognized the voice of his alchemist responding in a flirtatious manner. The audacity of his own trusted alchemist making advances on you ignited a seething rage within the emperor. How dare they cross that line and attempt to pursue you?
He will not stand for it.
Quickly he went back to his own workshop, and there it was sitting on a small box…a virus
He never intendente to create it, it was an accident when he had tried to find a cure. Now it served a new propuse.

The relentless return of the plague had consumed your every waking moment, leaving you exhausted and desperate for a breakthrough.
A knock on your door shattered the silence, momentarily diverting your attention. Wearily, you called out, granting permission for the visitor to enter. The door creaked open, revealing a figure standing in the doorway.the emperor
“How are you doing my dear mage?”
“As good as one can do with this predicament your majesty”even though you two had grown close you still wouldn’t call him by his name
“I see” he looked at you with heart eyes, even though you looked exhausted “i brought you a cup of tea, i thought you needed a little rest”
“Thanks your majesty, but i shall not rest, not when the people of your kingdom are suffering”
Oh you will be an amazing ruler, so preoccupied for your future subjects. He can’t wait for when he finally has you.
“Since you send your royal alchemist away its been more difficult to advance”
A-yes that, to the rest of the kingdom the alchemist was send away to investigate new cures but he knew the true, he send them a way to keep them away from you
“Don’t worry my dear,as long as we had each other we will be okay”
How he wishes that you would look at him the same way he looked at you, but he needed to be cautious of his actions, after all he was powerless against you if you ever decided to reveal yourself against him. But it was okay, when he managed to have you whining under him he will be sure that you wouldn’t think about that kind of things

Before we begin, I'd like to say how much I appreciate you trusting me to support or advise you. I think it's very nice that you're taking this step to see the areas you and your partner can work on. I'd like to add that in a relationship, it's important for both parties to work and do their part to make it work; and your making this decision shows me that you genuinely want it.

Of charts and changes
When I was a couple of weeks into this project and had a decent working prototype, I spent a while pondering where the game was headed. How many machines will it have? How many different items can the player make? Will I get sucked into the horrid black hole of scope creep?
All valid and easy questions to pose with any project, but good forward planning is great way to remove some of these concerns.
Measure twice, cut once
I made some early tactical decisions about the mechanics of the game that may seem restrictive, but actually help to narrow the scope of work in the long term.
These things might include steps such as:
Limiting machines to only accept items from belts, rather than other machines (so no butting-up of machines to other machines). This helps to remove complexities later on when I may decide to change or add slot types to machines, and don't want to have to rework all of that hand-off code.
Putting a hard-cap on machine placement size (1x1 or 2x2 only). This helps me understand layout ratios much easier, and allows me to make some assumptions about placement and input/output slot placements that simplifies the code.
Only allowing one item per belt segment. Reverting back to this was done to simplify the save-game state, input/output belt code, and actually to help de-clutter the visual noise in the factory, along with saving a few additional frames of GPU rendering.
There are numerous others, but sometimes imposing limits early on helps to avoid later problems.

One of the other big-ticket decisions was nailing down exactly what machines will be in the game, and exactly what items they produce. This is a little harder, because you have to plan both at the same time and it can get a little... messy.
Factory games are great in that they get you to think both spatially and strategically. Making layouts in a factory is fun, placing machines and laying down belts is satisfying. But so is coming up with that super-optimised layout that shrinks your setup by 25%.
I'm not sure how much of the latter this game is aiming for, but there will be factory obstacles and things you need to work your factory around, so it could provide for some interesting layouts.
I came up with a definitive 'machines' list a while back, but didn't back-fill it with the items I needed them to produce. So it took some re-working to get everything decided.
To that end, this horrendous diagram was born:

It's a chart of all of the machines that actually process items (some aren't shown that just move or change item positions). It's a kind of tech-tree, if you will, showing all the ways items get processed, and at what process 'stage' each one sits at (i.e. how many machines it has been processed by at that stage).
This diagram, although maybe a little confusing, is the precise map I need to fill out the rest of the game's content. It tells me what machines need to be made, and what items I need to create. Also, crucially, what machines do what with which items.

This kind of forward planning helps me to stay on track, gives me concrete development objectives to work towards, and also gives me a good roadmap of how to get to the next major milestone - all game machines created, and all items made. A pretty hefty milestone, to be sure.
I'll be working the above up into my prototype project before porting it over to the main game. I want to test the flow and make sure that the complex, sometimes 8-deep processing stages work flawlessly and don't get wacky in the save game file for some reason. I think I've built a decent foundation, so I'm not especially worried about this.

Owl hesitated for a moment. He didn't want to intrude but before he could go back inside, Price looked up, his gaze steady but not unkind. "Couldn't sleep again, *redacted*?" he asked, his voice low and calm.
Owl shrugged. "Seems to be a nightly occurrence," he replied, his tone carrying a hint of resignation.
Price nodded, taking another puff of his cigar. "A fellow night owl," he said, exhaling a cloud of smoke. "Army life can do that to you, though I suspect your troubles started long before."
Owl leaned against the wall next to Price, the cool stone pressing against his back. "Yeah, insomnia and I go way back. I thought maybe all this training would wear me out enough to sleep, but no luck."
Price chuckled softly. "The mind has a way of keeping us awake, no matter how tired the body is," he observed. "What keeps you up?"
Owl considered the question, his gaze drifting to the sky. "Everything and nothing," he replied after a moment. "The past, the future... It's like my brain refuses to shut down. Always thinking, always processing."
Price nodded thoughtfully, taking another drag from his cigar. "Seems to be a common affliction among men like you, men who think too much," he said.
Owl met his gaze, the understanding in Price's eyes both comforting and unsettling. "Do you ever sleep, Captain?" he asked, half-joking.
Price smiled faintly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "When I can," he replied. "But nights like these, I find a cigar and some quiet help clear the mind."

This blend of identities defines who I am, but embracing it has been a complex journey. Growing up, I was raised to see the world from a single perspective, which often felt restrictive. Deep down, I knew there was more to me, and this realization has profoundly impacted my mental health.
Navigating Multiple Identities
Being taught to express only one side of myself was incredibly challenging. Imagine waking up each day knowing you're suppressing significant parts of who you are. It took me years to understand and embrace the different facets of my identity. This internal conflict has affected my mental health both negatively and positively.
"Do you feel like having those different identities has impacted your mental health negatively?"
Yes, in both negative and positive ways. Initially, it was a struggle. I felt fragmented and unsure of where I truly belonged. But as I began to peel back the layers of my personality, I found strength and growth. Embracing my full self was a painful process, but it was also incredibly liberating.

"Did you ever have to seek guidance from a professional or a friend or family member to bring out truly who you were?"
Yes, seeking guidance was essential. As a child, I turned to school counselors because I didn't feel comfortable discussing my identity struggles with my family. The Loneliness of Self-Discovery
"When was the first age you realized you were feeling lonely?"
I started feeling lonely around my pre-teen years, probably between 12 and 14. It was a time when I felt utterly lost. The loneliness stemmed from not fitting in and feeling like I had to hide significant parts of who I was. This isolation marked the beginning of my journey toward self-discovery.
"How long do you think you really felt lost for?"
I felt lost until I started having my own children. The responsibility of raising them made me confront my identity head-on.
