The reason the phenomenon that is Goncharov is so interesting to me is in part the fact that it’s basically an Ultra Advanced version of things like The Hot Springs in the Witcher fandom
There are these universally agreed upon aspects of this thing that everyone knows about and yet doesn’t really exist
AU where Grian is assigned Scar's guardian angel after he commits his most wonderfully destructive prank yet. Guardian angel duty doesn't really seem like much of a punishment at all seeing as it puts Grian comfortably out of the Watcher's usual reach. Not to mention it gives him a job practically made to be blown off! If anything it sounds like a reward.
Then comes the twist: the Watchers are of course not stupid. They know that in usual circumstances this assignment would be giving Grian even more freedom to be a menace on people less capable of controlling him. They know Grian knows this, and that he is thinking them stupid.
It's only after careful deliberation they decide to give him a warning. Grian and his charge's pain will be linked: any pain they incur will become his own, and vice versa. A clever but simple change. The Watchers smile as they tell him this, as if they have successfully ruined all those plans that Grian had already started to form. Grian is undeterred.
They do not tell him they smile because they picked the man with the highest pain tolerance and frequency of injury that they could find. They smile because Grian will have no choice but to be responsible for once, if for nothing else than to put an end to his own suffering.
Hmm, that makes sense. I thought MXTX was essentially saying that it is hard to determine what's right or wrong, but empathy is the way to do so. I've seen arguments that JGY did good because of the watchtower, but at the same time he chose terrible decisions. If we're counting deaths, everyone in MXTX would be guilty of that. Am I wrong in viewing WWX and LWJ as moral ideals in this story?
No you are not wrong, that’s exactly what mxtx calls them, how they are meant to be viewed in the story, and why they get the ending they get while everyone else is left picking up pieces of their shattered world views or dead.
Mxtx is very much so not saying that it’s hard to determine what’s right from wrong. Gunning for genocide is never a right choice, and even the characters know it! The way the cultivation world at large is ashamed in front of their own children when it is revealed that they lied about burning the bodies on the Burial Mounds and actually threw the remains of the Wen remnants into the blood pool, desecrating them, and the way they had to lie on Wei Wuxian to begin with in order to drum up support against him while people stood with him—in both the past and present—anyways? These are clear moments where everyone from the older generations outside of wangxian (and later, Mianmian) are shown to be unambiguously wrong despite how much time and effort they spent trying to paint themselves as righteous. Empathy does go a long way, but towards combatting oppression and mob mentality, not supporting genociders and serial killers hiding behind class status to do whatever they want. Mdzs is a story warning about mob mentality and smear campaigns, not “well, we can never know what’s really moral so let’s just do whatever the powerful people say!”
As for Jin Guangyao’s infamous watch towers, when are those ever brought up in the novel to suggest that they did anything good for anyone? There’re literally referenced to say how suspicious it is that of all the watchtowers put up, there was a giant blind spot exactly where the Jin hid their dirty laundry who then went on to massacre an entire city! If there’s one thing woobified villain stans will do is act like a villain clearly lying about their intentions and motivations is being 100% honest and forthcoming about their actions 🙄
which is also always why i am very fond of cosplayers i DESPERATELY wanted to be a proper one when i was little and it just so happened that's how i figured out the concept of gender euphoria whilst dressed up as a ... harry potter character ... -_- it's also in the same way i desperately wanted to be an artist bc those were the two cool things you could be in 2013 and i guess this is the path i chose instead but there is an alternate universe out there where i cosplay i think ... i'd probably be doing renfaire stuff as i got older i think that's cool ... i genuinely think about this a lot
having a mild freakout over forgetting a major canon event that actually influences literally everything about the character whose POV I am not only writing in but whose character arc is literally the driving factor of this entire goddamn fic
''Same person different font'' thing regarding Mary and Dean's characters irk me so much lmao...
RIGHT omg like. On one hand we have a person who is authentically compassionate, is capable of acting outside of her own self-interest more often than not, doesn’t take out her emotions on the people around her, and owns her mistakes and shortcomings. On the other hand we have a person who is none of those things, and is furthermore a violent control freak who categorically abuses those closest to him. These are fundamental differences in the way these two characters interact with the world and others, which is far more significant in a comparison than any surface-level similarities. Liking cars and jerky does not a “same person different fonts” make.
Like lol I mean… I won’t be wholly disingenuous, I’m not going to pretend Mary and Dean have no commonalities whatsoever, because they do. In my take I’d say they both have something of a lying habit that they view not as necessarily harmful but as protecting others, as well as a tendency toward self-destructive behaviour and definitely some kind of saviour complex(?). But those similarities are still not nearly enough, in my opinion, to overshadow the fact that these two characters are otherwise, as outlined above, pretty much morally and socially disparate people. Which is to say, very much not the “literal same”.
It also just feels so reductive and honestly lazy to just write Mary off as just Dean: the Prequel or whatever and leave it at that. People do much the same with Claire (Dean 2: Simba’s Pride) and even with Max Banes (Dean the 3rd), and honestly it’s kind of. Dismal. That these characters can’t just stand on their own for a significant portion of the fandom and have to be reduced to “Dean mirrors” to warrant any thought, and are then only really thought about through that lens. Like I’m sorry that is NOT the deep character analysis you think it is 😭
the new ep really reminded me of my disappointment of how completely chill hawks is with endeavour abusing his family. him discovering his personal hero was abusive in the exact same way his father was should be gut wrenching, a betrayal but he doesn’t react to it in anyway other than “i’m sure things are different now”. if they made him destroyed and angry and carried that through the villain hunt arc, it would just bolster the tension and support the distrust society has for heroes and the need to put that aside anyway in the face of a greater enemy
Maybe it's just because of where I live, but the whole "Satine didn't like that her people were a bunch of warmongering imperialist assholes and told them to knock it off and implemented gun control and made the Jedi Torture Boxes illegal so that her people could rebuild and move on from their violent history of civil wars that reduced their planet into a nearly uninhabitable wasteland in favor of focusing on more productive things like art and education and this is literally cultural genocide and she's erasing history and she should've been a villain blah blah blah" take has always been so weird to me. Like I have absolutely seen people say things like that in real life all the time and about 90% of them have confederate flags on the back of their pickup trucks so. Yeah.
People who have supposedly read red robin 2009 but still insist that tim is like one day away from becoming a murderer and that actually hes not bothered by people he might have killed, please explain
Glad I got out of BNHA awhile back, from everything I’m seeing the manga and it’s presumed ending direction is going downhill faster than the naruto finale.
So I suddenly felt inspired to draw some more Ingo and Emmet stuff. But not the typical somewhat story driven angst comics I did previously. More like.. a “day-in-the-life-of” type deal. Like my Mario and Luigi content. I also wanted to draw some more expressions with the boys that weren’t twisted faces of tears and agony-
I also wanted to try to stay away from the hard angst this time. And just draw something that is overall pleasant. As I was sketching some ideas I realized that I never drew Elesa! Her fanon friendship with the twins seemed really fun to draw so I threw her in there too XD
I know nothing of Elesa’s canon personality so I just made it up entirely-- <XD I pictured her being the mom friend who very dearly loves her two very tall sons.
As for the last bit. Uhg, well I tried XD I can never seem to fully separate myself from angsty stuff. But at least it was light and it had a funny twist at the end! :DD
villain au concept: brutus (again &. again series)
tw: flashing lights for the video
this but with a neglected! reader who had tried to take a shot at fighting and discovering their potential. they're especially good with guns, the very weapon batman has sworn neven to use.
you were born to be a heartless killing machine— if not for your mother shielding you away from the sins she had bared, you would've been more than just a bounty or a target costing millions.
you would've been the topmost hired hitman at the age of ten, but you had only found out about your skill at that age.
simply being adopted into the family had delayed your development; turning you into a human, who yearned for love and attention yet never having it reciprocated. you had brainwashed yourself into thinking that if you could reach the same level as them then maybe, just maybe, you could stand by your family's side.
your father, batman, should've noticed the signs sooner.
that in the manor, it houses a cold blooded beast, too far gone into the world of lusting.
lusting for blood, lusting for condemnation, lusting to satiate their hunger.
the way your eyes lit up whenever you successfully hit a target from miles away, or the way your tantrums and fights with damian leads you to ripping apart practice dummies with murderous intent— they were detectives for god's sake! how could they have merely ignored the heavy thumps that cloak the night?
alfred had tried to address the sudden shift in your behavior. he had tried to point out your calculated stares during family meals, the bandages that began to litter your body, your bedroom doors now bolted; how every night the smell of blood seems thicker and more concentrated in the manor.
you didn't just grow up. hell no, you were an entirely different being.
instead of you being led to the light, you were further drawn to the darkness; the picture perfect scenario of what bruce should've been had he ever not picked himself up and fixed his ways.
but you weren't bruce, fucking wayne. no, you were (last name)'s child, and you would never forgive him for even trying to wipe out your own identity.
the neglect that had built up and the anger that was left of you— you turned it into determination; motivation for you to stealthily sneak through the batcave and steal his devices, transform it into weapons made for just for you.
yet you do not use bullets for justice nor reason just like jason, no. but you had died just like him, lost your hope for the very man who you once thought of your father.
it is all a means for you to quench your thirst.
you couldn't wait to see their faces.
maybe then they'll bond with you through fists and bruises, through gunshots and bullets.
and the best part of it all?
you don't need to ask for anymore for their attention.
not when you have all the other criminals willing to give the world in the palm of your hands.
a/n: do you know of fanon! jason who was said to be an aggressive kid? in this au, it's basically you; drowning in contempt lmao. anywaysz, this is just a concept that i randomly thought about, it's basically a "what-if" you had found out the truth sooner about your mother other than the rumors? (lore still redacted lmao) bec if you did, then the end result is this au hehe. again, in the main series there's a lot of false narratives on your part, i love utilizing the faulty narrator trope.
