I love the idea of leafling scars!! Such a cool idea but I’ve never seen anyone draw anything life that! Maybe I’m biased because I like Bernard.

Had this idea brewing since the game came out and there are SO many ways it could be applied to imply extra stories for Bernard and the castaways! I have no idea when else I'll be able to talk about this in length so thank you for sending this I can finally ramble!!!

To summarize:

Cured castaways are left with vine stitches that protect and keep together any internal or external injuries (may or may not disappear once the injury is fully healed)

The pikmin parasite potencially focuses on the head to control the host

The longer they're a leafling the more vibrant the hue left on the skin is. (I wasn't sure how much of a tomato Olimar would be)

Flowers can bloom in their leafy coats

Despite being brought into the same Onion they have different types of leaves/vines/flowers

I left it ambiguous whether or not castaways are still being healed after they've been turned into leaflings

Other info and ideas I didn't include:

A lot of times the plant grown will be poisonous ie. a yellow leafling grows buttercups. This is to protect them from predators.

Marks resembiling their leafling eyes might be visible on their corneas

Drinking nectar gives them a similar effect to the pikmin; blooming flower, faster speed (maybe strength? forgot if that's boosted), they also get "extra lives" but their pain receptors are more sensitive than the pikmin so they get temporarilly incapacitated for longer

Keeping it ambiguous if castaways are straight up revived from the dead or need to be brought in while they're still hanging on (there's so much story potential if theres a time limit tho!)

They might be able to use the vines as a second limb (I accidentally drew Olimar's vine too low so he probably has a vine tail now)

Dunno if I did Yonny's speech pattern justice here (still experimenting) but-

I REALLY wished we could've gotten notes from Yonny about this since he got to see them up close. And dang it I'm really curious about how the leaflings work, I get that they're all dandori n stuff but what if the pink ones can fly or the purple ones are stronger. Maybe all of them except blue leaflings get hurt by water.

So many questions and no answers, and so much design and story potential!!!

This was a pretty fun way to start drawing the castaways too. Now I'm really tempted to draw everyone's leafling forms (I may have already picked flowers for the rescue corps team based on their symbolism)

So you're able to just rise from the dead in pikmin 4. No, seriously. You can do that.

At the end of Olimar's side story we get this scene and associated line:

Like. He died. His life support system failed. He DIED. And moments later, he was revived as a leafling. He died and came back from the dead. Like, what the fuck????

It even fixed up his injuries he got prior to becoming a leafling. Just a full on revival.

Olimar: Not particularly. It didn't feel bad or anything like that. In fact, it was quite revitalizing.

Yonny: Hmm... Perhaps leafification has highly restorative effects...

Now we don't know if everyone who was a leafling had to die before hand, though there is a common thread that they were at least unconscious... And had just escaped deadly situations... I think Olimar found them moments before they died and, not knowing any other way to save them, leafed them as well. Something they bear no ill will towards him for - in fact, they're thankful for him.

Ok Bernard's conversation doesn't add to the "he found them in deadly situations" point but it DOES show that all of his "victims" think highly of him for the fact that he had saved them and others. (Also, side note, Olimar had sad eyes... Poor bastard thought he was never going home to his wife and kids, was visibly depressed over this, and STILL was trying to save people. Olimar is like, genuinely such a good fucking person God damn.)

Now being a leafling is undead and comes with its own slew of problems. Namely, the fact Dandori takes over your brain (probably the pikmin survival instinct) and the fact you can no longer leave PNF-404. It's not even an air thing, it's not being on the planet that causes sickness, so not even spacesuits can fix it.

But then you're able to cure yourself of being a leafling. And just. Go back? To your normal life?????? Like nothing ever happened. You died and came back. What the fuck.

And to make that point worse. One of the key ingredients is Glow Sap. Which is produced by the Luminknolls. The only other thing the Luminknolls make is uh. Glow pikmin. Which.

“Although they've been named Glow Pikmin, it's not entirely clear whether or not this species is actually a type of Pikmin. These creatures possess the same fundamental behaviors of Pikmin, like carrying things, propagating, and fighting. They also share special characteristics, such as the leaf atop their head. Yet they do not spawn from an Onion but a Lumiknoll, and they are only active at night or underground. During the day, they revert into seeds and enter a resting state. What's even more surprising is that they exhibit no signs of life. When a Glow Pikmin "dies," if that word can even be used, it does not expire in the typical sense. Instead, it just becomes a form of light-or perhaps a photon-and returns to the Lumiknoll. Putting aside my "scientist" hat for a moment...it seems to me that this creature or entity may not be a living organism at all but some manner of spiritual substance.”

Cool they're fucking ghosts. Sorry I can't be convinced otherwise, they're clearly some sort of supernatural entity at MINIMUM. I just think spirit is most likely. They don't have to be the spirits of dead pikmin... Although... You can convert a Glow Pikmin into normal pikmin via a candy pop bud. I've done it before, I have no video of it but you can go and try it yourself if you'd like. And if they are spirits of pikmin then that means that we can also bring pikmin back from the dead. What the FUCK.

Anyways. I got side tracked sorry. My point was the Luminkolls make two things: Glow Sap and Glow Pikmin, which have similar names and similar appearances and. Are we using ghost juice to cure leaflings???? Which is used to reverse all negatives of being leafed. Which can be used to bring the dead back to life.

I don't know how to end this. I really really don't know how to end this. I just need someone else to scream about this with because it's so. It's so fucking WEIRD like what the hell. It's not enough that they may be humans, noooo, there's also undead creatures (excluding the mushroom guys those freaks have an explanation at the very least). This game is weird as hell but tbh I love it.

wraithification ideally does preserve peoples memories! part of the process is forming the core that holds said memories, so as long as the process goes somewhat smoothly then the person should wake up very disorientated but with their memories and personality in tact.

naw she's thankfully immune to most elemental hazards. one of the perks of being a wraith!

there is always an inherent risk to the process. i'd say the absolute ideal circumstances you could have would be if a wraith like pom and a doctor like yonny were working together to increase the likelihood of survival. the process hasn't been studied at all, given the rarity of wraiths as an organism and the added rarity of a wraith becoming so attached to a creature that it wants to convert it.

there is a metaphysical aspect to wraiths as a species that defies understanding, so the person being wraithified or the wraith themselves having a strong will for survival would definitely contribute to the success of it. thankfully, unless there's a VERY specific set of circumstances (that are relevant only with someone like yonny wraith who has two cores), the subject would fall unconscious and not form memories of the wraithification itself (which is fortunate, because that would be kinda horrifying).

if she's saving dingo and this is a last ditch effort, pom absolutely puts her whole being into it. it's very, very hard on her and she has every last bit of energy sapped from her. depending on her reserves, she could end up hurting herself with the amount of energy it requires. but wounds are temporary and death is forever, so pom would persevere through and give it her all to save him

yeah! pom's skin might technically be fake because it's made from goo, but she still feels sensations through her goo. she probably doesn't get itchy that easily. she's probably a little ticklish? but i'm not sure if you want to try that on a wraith that could easily stab you in a heartbeat...

As I’m currently resting my wrist from drawing and I’m still thinking out more detailed story beats for WC I thought I’d just do some random rambling about my Pikmin au that won’t be very organized lol. Also adding a cut here as not to flood anyone’s unfortunate timeline

First off since I imagine I’ll get asked this someone someday, a small list of all the local losers preferences.

Olimar - Straight Cis. Doesn’t really get anything outside his bubble but is supportive regardless.

Louie - AroAce Cis (also has the tism). His only love is food.

Alph - GayDemi Cis. Likes love but not actively looking for it.

Brittany - GayDemi Cis. Her and Alph always laugh about the fact people think they’re dating just because they show physical affection to one another sometimes.

Charlie - Bi Cis. Koppite crew is literally the LGB.

Pom - Straight trans. You are not safe from Pingo propaganda.

Terry - Bi Cis. Probably doesn’t even know what being bi is and just thinks he has to make up his mind.

Penelope - Pan cis. Olimars shock when he found out when they were dating that she found girls cute too.

Now thats done, some more stuff about just some general relationships people have with each other. Olimar and Louie when Louie first joined HF were pretty neutral about each other even after 4 but after 2 and deeply apologizing for leaving him behind scared, Louie and Olimar got much friendlier with each other. They started carpooling and even spending some time outside of work together. While Terry thinks Louie is cool if a bit strange sometimes, Lebe is rather more skeptical and scared of him. Penelope worries he might be a bad influence but can't help but worry about Louie as much as Olimar does when Oli vents to her about Louie.

Alph and Brittany are best friends but their relationship isnt the most balanced at times. Brittany is quite quick to getting emotional and blaming others for things. Alph tries not to hold it against her too much given hes aware of her issues and why she is like that in the first place but it can rub off on his timid nature. Though he admired Charlie all through 3, Brittany's negative comments eventually changed Alph's perception on Charlie to just being someone he works with.

Now some of my own world building brain rot wo! a time system, joy. I was just thinking about how do people keep time between every other planet so i propose: Galactic time. Galactic time is not based off anything but purely numbers. 1 "day" is 20 hours long and there is no PM or AM. Its based of a single founding clock that all the other galactic clocks follow now and is usually exclusively used for interstellar work and jobs or meeting up on different planets. The galactic months are all 25 days long with only 10 of them. a galactic week is 5 days long and though i don't have names at the moment the months and days also have different names as not to get confused with any planet names or calendars they might have.

Strangest panspermia ever. Thanks, Pikmin 4.

Based on all we've learned about the funky little space people, I decided to elaborate on the little evolutionary tree I sketched in this post. Check that one out, too! (Some digital edits have been made to the text for clarity. Transcript is provided in image description.)

I didn't draw as many characters as I'd like to, and the Hocotatians look off, but it was very exhaustive work - it's good enough to have the type specimens down on paper, at least. (think of type specimens as "representatives" of their species) I plan to make in-depth illustrations for individual groups, but for now this is what I have.

Lengthy explanations and elaborations below:

Everything underlined in red in this photo is either outright stated in canon (example, the oxygen tolerance and ear shapes of Koppaites and Hocotatian-like folk) or construed directly from canon information. The latter lies in the scientific names - they are confirmed to be distant ancestors of humans, and it's highly likely the less oxygen-tolerant folk were underground, just like the Giyans were.

For how long they were underground is unknown, but considering Bulborbs are likely descendant from a gastropod, considering Water Dumples are in the same family as them… it feels safe to say a considerable amount of time has passed. Though I haven't researched the topic thoroughly, there are organisms that can live without oxygen. Anaerobic ("without air") organisms react adversely or even die to exposure to oxygen. Sounds pretty familiar, huh? Obviously, this trait came about from living underground. A common ancestor brought way for the signature pointed ears and anaerobic-like behavior of M. infrahumus. Simple enough, yeah? There's three issues. First issue is that anaerobic traits are often found in single cell organisms, and rarely in very small multicellular organisms. Second issue, Oatchi tolerates the air of PNF-404 perfectly, while fellow Giya inhabitants can't. What gives? Third issue, Yonny states that ingestion of glow sap seems to give people higher oxygen tolerance. I sure as hell would love to study why this is even possible, but at a certain point I need to consider what's too much work for me… I'll leave answering that conundrum to Yonny. He seems invested enough.

Whether or not they have low oxygen tolerance or none whatsoever doesn't matter - either way, this makes way for M. infrahumus to become very widespread. Almost like an invasive species, due to their ability to live almost anywhere… Meanwhile, the Koppaites are always shown as exceptional. Round ears? That's a Koppaite. Can't be from any other planet, apparently - it's a diagnostic trait. They seem removed enough to be considered their own species, with that in mind.

Unfortunately I made the mistake of not drawing any characters from Ohri (Or Nijo, for that matter. At least Bernard is mentioned in spirit…) despite labeling Collin as half Ohrian. Luckily, I have a little reference of how I draw Ohrians here. Fluffy little thing. Most Giyans we see have an oval face, Collin being an exception… I like you but please be less of a nightmare to draw. Thanks. <3

When Pom returned, there were a lot of salutes and cheering. Pom weakly held up a vial of pure glow sap and handed it to Sherry who quickly vanished to Yonny’s lab. She yawned and collapsed onto Oatchi.

“Good job Pom!” Shepherd said. “Yaaay me, bed needed, Oatchi makes a good bed.” Pom smiled with pure bliss on her face of a job well done.

Shepherd however handed over a strange green pill to Pom “Take this, Yonny’s made a pill that can remove the effects of tiredness from you. Take it and give it a few minutes and you’ll be back on your feet. Don't worry about side effects, he's ironed most of the kinks out.” Shepherd said, leading the rookie into the S.S. Shepherd.

Meanwhile, Dingo was carrying the breadbug. It squirmed and squeaked with worry in its voice towards the dead giant breadbug. Nearby was a castaway with almost sparkling eyes and dark green hair. Dingo watched the castaway’s eyes light up and they dashed towards Dingo. 

“Look at that fella! Oh my, isn't that a cutie? It looks like a bread roll, so cute! I'm going to call it a breadbug. Can I have it?” The castaway asked with a sparkle in his eyes.

Dingo took a couple of steps back in surprise. “Wh-what’s your name?”

“My name is Dalmo. Animal enthusiast. I'm the author of the Piklopedia.” Dalmo said. He walked up to the Breadbug once more and went cootchie coo. “Can I have it?” Dalmo asked. “I g-guess so.” Dingo said, gently putting down the Breadbug “THANK YOU, I'll call you Gilbert!” Dalmo said, picking up Gilbert and lightly stroking him on the top. Gilbert weakly squeaked and waddled around the place. With that dealt with, Dingo headed to Yonny’s lab with Jack on his shoulder. Down in the lab, Yonny was carefully refining the glowsap sample. Sherry carried over some blue liquid in a test tube and poured it in, Yonny then pressed a few buttons and waited a moment or two. Just when there was a soft ding, Dingo entered. Yonny motioned towards a spare helmet and the leafling on the table, the leafling’s leaf color was purple. “Ah Test subject Dingo, lovely to see you here. Can you grab that helmet, I'm sure the cure will work this time. If not then I need more of it.” “Copy that!” Dingo saluted, he then grabbed the helmet while jack gently opened the leafling’s mouth. Yonny held up the glowing pill and dropped it into the Leafling’s mouth

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the leaves began to glow with the eerie green of glowsap and the stem began to wither away. With a quick signal, Dingo secured the helmet safely onto the castaway. There was a brief moment of silence until the former leafling opened his eyes.

“Oh, hello. You must be the Rescue Corps underneath the leaves.” The castaway spoke calmly as if he wasn't just an unwilling participant in a medical breakthrough. Sherry was writing away into a notebook and Yonny smiled. “Eheheheheh! It WORKED IT ACTUALLY WORKED. YES! YAHAHAhAH!” Yonny cheered and flew around the cave. Dingo couldn’t help but smile. Now that there was a cure ready, the chances of survival have just gotten a whole lot better.

In the Hero’s hideaway and In the cave of frozen inferno. A Beautiful icy moth fluttered around the ice and red Pikmin, Louie’s leaves were tipped with ice and he was holding an icicle for a knife. Louie turned back to look at Olimar. Olimar could feel the unending hunger gnaw at his own mind mixed with the Dandori thoughts. Louie pointed up at the moth and nodded. Olimar lowered his hands in preparation. With a quick dash, Louie stepped on Olimar’s hand with a quick lift. Louie went flying towards the Moth and dug the icicle into the weakened moth’s back. The moth began to develop weak ice blizzards and fell to the ground with a thump. There was a castaway, not a leafling. Not good, not good at all. Eventually the suit would fail and they would die. He blew the whistle and led the ice pikmin to the vents. Louie dusted off his hands and walked to Olimar. Maybe I should take the moth and dice it finely and pluck the wings. Wait a moment, i wouldn't want to do that, that moth is such an interesting beast, why would i want to eat it? Unless…” 

Olimar thought to himself before looking up at Louie. Moss nudged Olimar, breaking the former captain out of his thoughts. “...” Louie didn't even say a word before walking to the vents. Olimar stayed there for a moment, thinking about the now fading hunger that seemed to slip into his mind. He needs to make note of this in his logs. Although I have saved another castaway, a worrying feeling filled my mind. One of hunger and cooking expertise. Is Louie affecting the Pikmin as well as I with these feelings? Maybe strong emotions can override the purpose of the Connection. This is just a theory however and I do hope they can save me soon…

(two things, one there’s a tf2 reference in this and two, :3 the breadbug’s name is a reference to big Gilbert )

My current Pikmin 4 experience so far

I've only had Pikmin 4 for like 3 days and I've already fallen in love with all the little guys- I swear if anything happens to them I will murder that damned bulborb with my own two hands.

And then there's Oatchi.

OH MY GOD I LOVE OATCHI HE'S SO CUTE AAAAA

So anyways-

I know I love dogs, but Oatchi is on a whole different level. Not only is he the fluffiest, most goodest boy, he has been the most helpful good boy ever. Every mission I've done, Oatchi has helped in one way or another. He's also been a huge help with transporting the Pikmin across water and when I was just too scared to walk normally. By far, Oatchi has been the MVP of the team. Of course, there will still be a place for the Pikmin, forever and always.

Now for something new- if you haven't found the doctor yet, now's a good place to stop.

So I just recently found Yonny, the doc, and I was ecstatic. I mean, I had four leaflings waiting for treatment of some kind, and no one to treat them. The only problem? Dingo drank the last tonic. Oh, and the sap the cure comes from only blooms at night. Yonny asked me if I could go grab some. Okay, sure.

I did not realize it was gonna become a Warframe defense mission.

So far, I've only done one mission, and while I panicked once the timer started, I think I can do. But as for right now, I think I'll stick to the daylight, thank you very much.

ok i finished Pikmin 4 here are my quick thoughts:

The Dandori battles, the Dandori challenges, and the night expeditions were by far the highlights of the game for me. My only complaint is that the only challenging expeditions and challenges were the ones in the post-game, I wish the others were a bit harder - there were two Dandori challenges I had to restart 10+ times just to get everything right, and I enjoyed them a lot, but I completed the others on my first try. The night expeditions were also nerve-wracking (in a good way), though they don’t require as much planning/strategy as the challenges. The battles were fun but very chaotic, at times it was hard to know what was going on.

I have mixed feelings about Oatchi. I like that you can give him various types of orders, and carrying pikmin makes transporting them much easier. However, his rush attack is too strong and it makes enemy encounters unbelievably easy. I would lose at least a couple of pikmins in every enemy encounter in previous games, but in pikmin 4 that rarely happened thanks to Oatchi's rush.

Also, maybe it’s because of Oatchi, or maybe it’s because I played Pikmin 2 very recently, but Pikmin 4 seems much easier than previous games. Wistful Wild and its three caves make the last area and caves in Pikmin 4 seem like an absolute joke. The Gatling Groink alone is harder than almost every boss and major enemy in Pikmin 4.

I despise that they reused so many bosses from previous games. Finding four Emperor Bulblaxes, three Burrowing Snagrets, one Man-o-Legs, and two Waterwraiths in what is the last cave of the game is honestly unacceptable imo. That’s 10 bosses out of 25, and of those remaining 13, only two were actually interesting (the Empress Bulblax in a tiny room and the Arctic Cannon Beetle); the rest were too easy or a waste of time. This is especially disappointing given that the last cave is more of a “boss rush” than it is a strategy level where you have to think what to do and in what order, like in Pikmin 2. The last boss was really fun, but I wish there had been a little bit more of a challenge on the way to the final level.

That said the Groovy Long Legs was the best boss in the entire franchise and that alone raises the game to a 10/10.

There’s an unfathomable amount of dialogue and it doesn’t help that the characters talking are boring and uninteresting. Except for Yonny, whom I would listen talk all day long.

There are also a lot of needless interruptions (like the screen with all the objectives you get after each day, as if you need to be reminded of them; the screen you get after completing every side quest). I'm glad there's a skip button but they should have made it more effective, and get rid of a bunch of screens that are repetitive and annoying.

Overall I like the changes in gameplay in Pikmin 4, though the menu that opens when you hold press Y should have been like the ability wheel in TOTK, and changing characters should have been a matter of pressing one button like in Pikmin 3. I feel like I underutilized Oatchi’s abilities just because the menu was so cumbersome. But if we're talking about "gameplay mechanics that need to be improved", I hope whoever made the autolock gets stoned to death.

Did I mention that I love Yonny? @nintendo you should make him the only character in the next Pikmin game and every other game ever.

YEAH let's go with yes. i didn't think this part through. the fact that wraiths can shapeshift is just a little silly meta nod at the fact the MC can look like anything in the games, i didn't think about it any further than that hehe. it does open up the door to silly shapeshifting shenanigans though

YEAH YOU GET IT yonny is the first one to become suspicious of her but until the rest of the crew catches on, they just all think she's odd. a little weird! except for dingo. he's not the brightest he probably he just thinks that rookie is trying to show off!!

actually thinking off the top of my head, collin would probably be a runner up behind yonny in terms of finding her suspicious. it's weird that she can knock out a mission during the day, a night expedition right after, and be ready to hit another mission the next day without any sleep...

WAHHHHHH THANK YOU GHRHGR... while i'm definitely drawing more (and i have more queued up to post), I am actually also writing a drabble in this AU.

the premise is that Yonny discovers what she is, and she has to convince Yonny not to sell her out before time runs out. i wrote it to share in the server, but if y'all have any interest in it i could post that... (disclaimer: i'm not a strong writer. but it's fun!)

the water wraith would have to stop trying to run her over too long enough for her to say something! although, she'd be incredibly wary of the other wraiths. she's terrified of somehow being exposed, and she doesn't know if they could do something to reveal who she is. she'd rather not chance it, and simply get TF out instead!!
