Hades Charmes brain rot dump
Domestic Charmes Modern Au for my needs bc there’s not enough art of them HNNNNG (bless you AO3 writers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some designs for Hermes. (Charon’s still in the backlog in my head rn). Hermes with glasses anyone??? 😭
I’m in the deep trenches of making my own Au where Hermes and Charon are finance bros (god of commerce and the god who collects gold, duh, ain’t no way they’re dirt poor).
There’s plenty of fics that display Hermes as the black sheep of the family who’s running his own life away from his family doing odd jobs and barely hangs on (no hate I love them!!!) but there’s not enough Rich! Hermes out there so I just gotta insert my own brain rot. Charon and Hermes working for rival finance companies (one deal with future investment and one deal with settlement money/clauses after one’s death (idk if it’s a real thing but meh)
Check the tags for the synopsis lol AO3 style
Bless Jen Zee for long hair Hermes bc all the hairstyle I can conjure from this 😩🙏
The glasses started as a goofy accessory and ended up staying. Longsighted-Hermes who can’t see things that are close to him and uses contact lenses at work 👁️👁️. Only wears glasses at home (with Charon). Grows very little beard and is perpetually tired bc overworked! Hermes is so canon.

I like how in the first game, Aphrodite is like 'Mm Charon? Oh, cool, yeah, you bought my boon from the boatman and his nasty trash :/ As least he's a greedy weirdo, otherwise I couldn't make head or tails of him.'
And now she's all 'oh Charon! I love him. He's so tall and strong. Of course who wouldn't fantasize about him coming to your aid~'
I like to believe that this is because, as the goddess of love, she couldn't figure out a damn thing about Charon since he's in the underworld, and, canonically, the Olympians can't feel what's going on down there. But then she saw Hermes slobbering all over him at the post-game party, and after god knows how long with Charon and Hermes being topside and pining completely platonically over each other due to their separation, she's realized Charon is a prime cut of grade A Beef as she should have centuries ago.
I'm very proud of her.

My List of Demands for Hades II
ZAGREUS
I'm just going to list Zagreus until I run out of breath. I just need to see my baby boy again okay please tell me he's still as sweet and handsomes as ever
WHERE IS THANATOS we need our resident irritable goth to partner with the Prince of the Underworld
CERBERUS a lot of people noticed he was missing from the family portrait with baby Mel, he cannot have come to total harm otherwise there would be a massive riot and there'd be no game because Hades himself would go NUCLEAR if anything happened to his pupper
The Furies will be interesting. Meg can be salty somewhere far away from me, but Alecto getting her ass kicked by someone who isn't Zagreus would be novel. I'm betting at least two people (Meg and Zag) would make sure DUSA is safe and she's small enough/can float where she can disappear somewhere if need be
Hermes BETTER be married to Charon I swear to Gods you CANNOT put him in THAT outfit and not have them married come on. I doubt the game would let me have Zag and Than be underworld husbands but at least give THOSE TWO as a gift to the fandom
ACHILLIES AND PATROCLES. I did not watch the entire storyline playthrough multiple times and just adore how married they are only for something to mess that up. Even if it's just Patrocles holding Achilles back from attacking Odysseus I'm here for it let me see my uncles again
I'm not too worried about Persephone because a) Hades would move dimensions in order to keep her safe without hesitation and b) Grandma Demeter has her war gear on so Chronos is fucked either way
Zagreus ... mi son ... plz ... where mi son ...

I CAN YEAH !!! i can gush about them forever and ever!!!! under the cut for length <3
Tumblr media
melitodes' physical appearance and her aesthetics lean towards nepalese inspired clothing and accessories, just because i was quite interested in different kinds of 'draped' clothing, which is why her clothes are a combination of a sari and typical greek chitons/robes. she loved her home very much and is very influenced by demeter, which makes her quite cold and steely towards the chthonic gods at the start, before she warms up to everyone, though she still struggles with showing her appreciation/emotions. the cast is very understanding though, as anyone who plays foa knows, and doesn't mind so much once they know she's trying and cares for them very much.
very organised and enjoys 'desk work', and also disliked hermes from the start because she perceived him to be too immature and too annoying, and was a little frightened and responded badly to alekto's initial grilling. she gets over this though! especially with alekto! she now works as a diplomat, the combination of her intelligence and intuition making up for how she can be a little distant at times.
Tumblr media
dionysus has never really had a hard time, though he's a bit concious of the fact that he knows he's sheltered, and that he breezes through a lot of life. the vines in his hair are pretty much the only magic he can do, where he's great at growing grapes but not much else, so he's quite attached. a chilled-out and happy-go-lucky sort of person, he slowly figures out his ambitions and his talents, since he awkwardly never felt like being 'well liked and atheletic' would ever amount to anything 'substantial', especially considering how he's not good at magic, and how different this all makes him from demeter. given time to explore what he can do with his interests, he helps the moirae, interested in how fate works and how fickle it can be.
though he never really resented demeter, or chafed under her watch, he's curious about the world and was excited to see the underworld. upon meeting friendly faces like pyri, charon and hekate, he figured (quite naively, but luckily the chthonic gods are actually that kind) that this would actually be totally fine, and was relaxed pretty much from the start.
Tumblr media
and despite how persephone is the pc that i have posted about for years, i realise i haven't really sobbed about her properly, so here we are! despite loving their mother and aunt deeply, they've always wanted more than olympus, feeling out of place there. they've hidden this, and was curious and positive towards the underworld initially. plus, hermes goes there often, and never complains, so she's privately believed it couldn't be that bad. plus when hermes reassures them, they have more reason not to worry! rather placating as well, some part of his 'arc' in my head is learning to voice what they want, rather than trying to make their mother or friends happy.
a very physical worker, they have never been able to sit still and enjoy book-learning, preferring crafts and practicing their magic. they're helping out with the agriculture in the underworld and they love gardening, while the other two don't necessarily love it (meli does it out of obligation, and dionysus isn't good at it). quietly snarky and fun, they get along with hermes so well because they're sneakier than most would believe. a strict parent will do that to you!
all three of them have a sort of 'finding who they are' story, since foa really leans to that by itself:
meli's is more of a "letting go of prejudice, learning to see past (olympian) propaganda and realising who i really am outside of olympus' influence".
dion has a more traditional "i don't have direction, but suddenly in the right surroundings with the right people, i'm growing into the person i've always wanted to be"
seph is all about "finding out and fighting for what i want, rather than trying to pacify others, and figuring out who i am in that process"
it all ends with that sense of belonging, and feeling at home with this cast of deities. it's also sort of a first time for all of them to have more than one or zero friends, since most of their aquaintences are their mother's household staff and one (1) other goddess. some of them do very well, and others not so much. it's a fun game to play around with the stats and choices with! they all eventually love the underworld and its residents though, regardless of how they start and progress, because i am playing and i need my pcs to love it LOL
thank you for asking me, and if you read all that thank you omg i have just taken the excuse to rant!! mwah!!

a brief analysis on hades npcs' favorite blood sibling
this is not a popularity contest. this is my attempt at analyzing if certain characters prefer a certain sibling based on the info we have now.
prefers mel:
artemis. she likes zag of course, but this is obvious.
this is sad and ofc horrendously unfair to zag, but as predicted, so far hades does speak to mel with more respect than he did zag for most of hades 1, as evidenced by him already calling her "daughter" not "girl." perhaps hades's relationship with zag has changed significantly post-game, and obviously the circumstances and baggage of zag's upbringing (which hades was responsible for) vs hades meeting mel for the first time as a capable young woman are very different, but. yeah.
this is a guess, but i'm gonna say hermes likes her more as well, although only just. he's eager to get her to olympus and they've just been in contact for longer as he's a friend to the silver sisters. however i do think that there's an argument to be made that zag prioritizes speed over mel, both in character and gameplay, so hermes might relate to that with zag more.
possibly charon. i might have put him in the "no preference" category, because i don't think mel being able to understand him better necessarily means he likes her more, but i do think that he might prefer mel juuuuuuust barely only because he offers her loyalty cards without her needing to beat his ass lmao. there is no shoplifting option for mel yet so if it is added, i might change my mind, but so far i don't think she'd be the type to do it anyway.
possibly aphrodite but if so, it's not by much imo. she definitely likes zag, but says to mel "you look like you can break some hearts even without my aid" which sounds like approval of mel's messy situationships lol. to me her nicknames "little godling" vs "gorgeous" kind of implies the slightest more fondness of mel but again, not by much.
prefers zag:
chaos. outwardly asked "where's your more fun brother :/" and explicitly once told mel to shut up lol. also because i think a being called primordial chaos is understandably more interested in a story of "snarky, rebellious kid runs away from home and shakes up family status quo while blasting his way through the underworld" rather than "perfectionist does what she's told/tries to set the world in order." obviously chaos still supports mel, but definitely finds zag more interesting. chaos had to specifically set up trials for mel to get entertainment out of her lol.
skelly. one of my theories as to what's going on with skelly is that he's cosplaying his living self just for shits and giggles because it's a war, but also like. it's skelly lol so who knows. i think his personality in 1 is more his "natural self" which so far we've only seen come out around zag.
cerberus. :/
no preference:
homer. i know homer describes them differently (zag as a lazy, responsibility-avoiding slob vs mel as a tragic duty-focused, orphan princess), but i think that's not because homer prefers mel, but because he's crafting his diction to the story being told. hades 1 is a story with a twist wherein he reveals a laid-back prince is actually just lonely and misses his mom (imo he describes zag much more sympathetically as time goes on), but hades 2 is a war story and mel has been raised as a soldier all her life, so his tone is just different with mel from the offset. it's not fun to make light of her because the stakes are higher.
demeter: the real answer is persephone, persephone is her favorite lol. imo she seems just glad to have alive grandkids.
poseidon and zeus? haven't seemed to notice a preference so far from either of them. they have a more pressing reason to support mel because war and all, but also artemis mentions they don't really believe she can do it, which makes sense, but it makes me wonder if their support with mel is a bit patronizing, or like "well what have we got to lose." they also don't seem particularly worried about zag missing of course but i think these two have so many nieces and nephews and relatives that any preference they have between mel or zag is miniscule.
theories on returning characters we haven't seen yet:
prefers zag: nyx (just due to her raising him... but a case can be made for mel due to the silver sisters/mel living in shadow/hecate's relationship with nyx), dionysus (party boys), achilles & patroclus (probably), sisyphus & orpheus (power of friendship), thanatos & meg (obvious), asterius (respect for their many battles)
prefers mel: athena (level-headed warrior women), ares (a witch assassin groomed specifically for war? "go ahead and torture my family, but i will still come back to kill you over and over again"? absolutely), eurydice (cooking gal pals), theseus (please god it'd be so funny)
no preference: idk dusa? and hopefully persephone. the kids need a parent who doesn't have a favorite. i do think she will always have a soft spot for zag because he found and brought her home, but also i'm sure persephone will also want to spend a lot of one-on-one time gardening with her daughter.

Zagnos and Hypnos nation, I have an AU for you
I call it the white swan au
Tumblr media
Hypnos is having family issues. He’s a ballet dancer, but is fighting chronic fatigue. He cherishes dance over the family funeral business, by the time he gets back from practice he’s too tired to work effectively. It’s caused tension in the family, they can’t understand that the death industry just isn’t for him. But he gets a golden opportunity, to be the white swan in a highly anticipated, first ever rework of swan lake that contrasts the black and white swan together in a tale of self doubt and overcoming it. One that the orchestra of Apollo and the muses is playing for. His partner in the dance will be Zagreus, the only one that seems to understand his situation as he too has some family issues. His family being the rivaling funeral home to the Cthonics. Hypnos believes that if he can have his family see the performance and draw a standing ovation, they’ll finally understand he’s worth something outside of the family business. He overworks himself, pushing himself to the point he’s so fatigued he’s barely holding on. Zagreus is worried, but he can’t seem to snap Hypnos out of it. A few days before the performance, a massive fight between the twins break out when Thanatos accidentally damages the very expensive and elaborate swan outfit. The fight gets so bad Hypnos takes the outfit and doesn’t come home, staying with Zagreus. Charon is the first to realise how far this has gone, and gets his partner Hermes’ to very quickly and efficiently fix the costume and assured Hypnos everyone will be there to see him perform.
When performance day comes around, Hypnos is completely exhausted but pushes on. Midway through the show he starts to feel lightheaded and sore, but he keeps going. He’s determined to prove himself. Zagreus begs him to let the understudy take over but Hypnos refuses. They push on, the whole time Hypnos is barely holding on and Zagreus is giving him pleading looks to stop. In his fatigue, he lands a jump slightly off and injures his ankle but he just keeps going. Charon notices something is wrong from the crowd, but he can’t exactly stop the performance so he watches in anticipation for the worst. Hypnos finishes the show, but right as the curtains close he finally collapses and blacks out. His whole family sees it, and it’s the wake up call they need that things in this fight have gone too far. He’s taken to hospital, and while they wait for the verdict Zagreus chews them all out for the way they’ve treated Hypnos. Luckily, he’s ok and will be able to keep dancing as long as he keeps to a strict recovery routine and doesn’t overwork himself like that again.
The story ends with the family talking everything through, Hypnos being given the credit he deserves and his condition finally understood. Zagreus makes him promise to not hurt himself like that again, assuring him he was the most beautiful white swan to ever dance the stage. And finally, things start to look up for Hypnos.

Hi! I'm so happy for you that you've finished your first draft and so excited to read it soon! (I wish I could finish mine haha). I have a... well it's sort of a question I guess. More of a rambly group of suggestions/requests? It's in reference to the type of bedroom that we can design near the beginning of the game, and the LI's eventual reaction to it.
So, more to the point, I'm the type of person that likes to "match" my LI's and their interests as much as possible. I can't really explain why it makes me happy to do so, it just does. Maybe I feel closer to them? I know it literally doesn't matter at all because they'll like anything I pick, but I still want to match them somehow. Like, for example, with some of them (Hermes and Pyri for sure I think) it mentions that if I pick the option with bright colors and plants, they seem to fit right in into my room, and that made me happy. But then for others (Charon and Hades were some I think) it said they seem out of place in my room, which made me a little sad (even though I know it doesn't really matter and they like it anyway). I would prefer to be able to pick options that my eventual LI will look like they fit into if possible? Like if it was something they would pick? (Are there options currently that I could pick where they would look like they fit right in? If so, could I know which ones? Ah, but if so, some would probably not include the two options with plants, which brings me to my next point...)
So I truly mean this with love and as a suggestion, but it kinda bums me out that only two of the room design options have plants as part of it. Because for me, as someone trying to play a Persephone who's really leaning into her powers, it feels like that means I really only have two options to pick from, since for me having plants is a must. And those two option are either adding bright or soft colors with plants, neither of which really appeal to me personally. I was thinking it would be cool if we could have a dark colors/darker vibe with plants option too. Or maybe even better, would there be a way to be able to make the "add plants to room" option separate, so that we would really be able to choose whichever design we wanted, without being limited to the couple that have plants now, if we are someone that definitely feels like plants are a must?
If not I totally understand, I just thought I'd give my thoughts and recommendations! I really hope I didn't come off as demanding or ungrateful! I'll love whatever it is you come up with, even if you feel you don't want to change anything, don't worry! :) Apparently I'm incapable of being concise, sorry and thank you for reading my wall of words! <3
Hey anon, I'm definitely planning to take a look at the room options again. It's already a lot of variation to write in the scene where people visit, but I will consider some alternate options in that vein, yes. :)

@nectaric asked: “ i’ll get blood on your shirt… “ - Hermes to Charon uwu
injury starters | not accepting
"I do not care." Though the words reverberated in the chatterbird's head, a short huff left his lips. Along with a short sphere of purple smoke. Already he had let his oar drift and settle back onto the boat and had lifted the god into his arms.
Not only were the oarsman's robes dark but he livedclose to water and had extensive wardrobes of clothes. By now though Charon knew that telling any of this was not necessary and would fuel Hermes to argue back moreso.
"You need healing. Either from Lady Hekate or I deliver you above and your siblings and associates can administer it. Your choice. Choose quickly."
The wounds, while looking extensive, did not look too time sensitive, enough that he would be able to take the boat to either option with time to spare. He hoped.
Stepping into the boat, a spare blanket often used to cover children pulled itself from the small basket it was stored in and draped itself over one of the pews carved into the boat, on which Charon rested the man.
Seconds later, the sound of ripping fabric came as Charon tore strips of his own robe off from its hem and began to tie them around the injuries, tight enough to apply pressure and hopefully stem bleeding. With that, and not another word, Charon moved to his usual position and set the oar into the water - pushing off with all of his strength to get the boat accelerating and fast to get them up to speed. Once done, the oar was pulled up to prevent drag and Charon's secret revealed itself.
He truly did not need the oar to row, if he did not wish. His connection to these waters was that distinct that he could bend them to his will, especially when such intense worry filled his sluggish heart. Currents formed beneath the boat and steered it through, to whatever destination Hermes chose from.

Hermes growing up in sunshine and bright lights and pretty thrones and regality and formality and "stay still, for the love of the stars, just stay still for one bleeding second" and hearing stories about the dirty Underworld and how its damp and dreary and no one it and the people who do are weird and strange and he meets Thanatos on a war field and admires the pretty wings stretched long across his back and watches quietly as he walks through bodies and blood and weaponry laid bare and plucks wandering confused soul up from their barely breathing chests and away from the grass they're sobbing in and and he follows him like a duck to water and Thanatos pays him no mind, just deposits the soil at the foot of his older brother and descends across the Styx with wide black wings that glitter like jewels in the dim light of the Underworld.
Charon regards Hermes with little interest, collecting payment and readying his boat. There's a young boy, no older than fifteen, who has no money, but Charon just pulls a coin from his own pocket and adds it to the bucket. It's locked tight and snaps at Hermes with large fangs when he creeps too close so he batters back and follows the boat across the Styx. She's black and vicious, waters tremulous and cruel. Beneath her waves, lost souls are screaming, begging to be saved. But around Charon's boat, her waves are soft and gentle. They push his boat along as he paddles to the gray sandy shore ahead.
He pays Hermes no mind when he lands of soft gray beach beside the boatman. Just guides the souls in a long line to the wall. There are other souls walking long across the beach and they turn and run with wispy feet and crash into the newly deceased with untapped joy.
Charon's lip twitches.
Hermes wanders through hallways and rooms and there's a large court, a myriad of souls waiting with shaking nerves as nymphs and naiads and skeletons holding stacks of parchment beside them. Some are assuring them. Others are silent, simply waiting.
Out through the final door, there's a beautiful walkway into a large field of asphodels. The Lethe trickles nearby. He can hear her soft siren call to rest, to sleep, to wash away all that worries him. Poppies flock her riverbank. Hypnos shimmers nearby. He is humming as soft tune as he lays a wispy soul to rest in the water.
The first and last time Hermes met him was Pasithea's wedding. A grand affair as Hera would have nothing less for her lovely daughter. He had been sleepy-eyed, dim and unresponsive. Here he is brighter. Whispering soft assurances as the soul rolls out of his arms and into the soft lap of the river below. He waits some time then collects them. They seem smaller somehow. Wet and dripping. But their form, once wispy and deteriorated, is stronger now. Squishy and soft along the edges, but ridge.
He seals them up in a jar and sets them aside with another set of jars. He pays Hermes no mind as he walks past. Nearby Pasithea descends. She cracks a crooked grin at her half-brother, and collects the washed souls sealed away. She disappears on gossamer wings into the darkness above their heads. Hypnos continues his work, lowering one soul at a time. Some of them are wispy and some are glowing bright. But he treats them all with the same gentleness. Like a parent tucking a child in for bed.
Hermes moves on.
It is not as dark as everyone said. Jewels glitter along the walls. The poplar trees almost glow, their white back standing strong. There is no dampness. It is cold, yes, but there's a warmth there. In the hustle and bustle. Ghosts wander, but nymphs and naiads and gods fluster back and forth among them.
It doesn't feel dreary. Feels like home. Comfortable, like every village and town Hermes has travelled through. Everyone has a job and they do it the best of their ability. They step around one another with practiced ease and smile and laugh. Cows roam freely and come when called.
Macaria doesn't say hello when he drifts by. She simply states at him for moment, but she doesn't question his presence. Just turns around and continues onwards with a cluster of souls at her side. Elysium is clustered further to the back. It is saved by a large boundary wall and strong iron gates. She pulls them open easily and he follows her inside. It is beautiful and orderly. Obsidian walkways. Colourful cottages. In the center square there is a large pomegranate tree. Each fruit is golden, hanging high and neatly in dark green leaves. As he approaches, they seem to shift, pushing outwards as though enticing him to take. Macaria grabs his wrist. It is the first true acknowledge of his presence.
"Don't," she says. "Eat those while living and my father will own you as if you were dead."
The golden fruit entices him. Turns a rich red as the trees almost tilts towards him.
"Oh," he says faintly. He doesn't like to be denied the things he wants, doesn't like to be told he can't have something, and he's tempted to take it anyway. But he withdraws his arm.
She pulls her hand off him and smiles kindly. She says nothing else, just carries on her way.
Hermes states at bright red fruit in front of him. He's never really been a fan of pomegranates. They're annoying to eat, little seeds you have to chew and spit out. And they're bitter. But he wants these ones. Distantly he thinks they'll taste good, like candy, like sugar, like the sweet relief of death.
He steps back and exhales shallowly. Turns on his heels and leaves.
The castle is far off to the corner. Built in the shadowy walls of the Underworld. He wanders through hallways and a throne room, peeking into bedrooms on the second floor. Each room is carefully curated to everyone's own design. He stumbles a bit when the castle floors shift under his feet, expanding rapidly. A new door opens up. He peeks inside to spot a nursery, and a second leading into Pasithea and Hypnos's shared bedroom. It slowly decorates itself. Sleepy wisps of fog against the ceiling. A soft rocking chair beside a study crib. Glowing jewels sprout from the walls. They are sharp for a minute before rounding out gently.
There is one room that is bare of any real effects. There is a bed that sits in middle, untouched. The sheets are too crisp. There's a closet. Dark robes sit inside, all the same colour, all the same design. There is one thing, a silver handmade crown on the beside table. It isn't well-crafted, but its cute.
He steps out and continues to wander. There is a modest kitchen on the second floor, across from the line of bedrooms. It accompanied a small seating area. But that is all. The third floor is open, no ceiling, just floor and an impressive view of all that is the Underworld. He steps onto the railing and jumps off. Flies across grass and wheat and a small but bustling farm and asphodels and poplar trees.
It's not scary. He doesn't know why the others grumble so much. Perhaps they fear what is below the surface, Tartarus, eternal punishment. The Phelegathon swirls around a large staircase that descends into flaming waters. The closer he gets, the warmer it is. The Keres are dragging sobbing souls to it and shoving them in unceremoniously. The river doesn't part for her, as she flies over head, but when a soul falls from her grasp, it spits the poor sufferer back out and into the pit itself.
Hermes recognizes Alecto as she ascends from deep inside the darkness. She glares at him, unpleased, but does not say anything about his presence. Merely snaps her whip and flies off. From a safe distance, Hermes follows.
Ah. Yes. The crown jewel of the Underworld.
The mines.
The caverns are glistening. Carts and carts of jewels are stacked along the walls. Guards dogs and a couple rams hold close, growling at Hermes when he tries to sneak over. A nymph shoots him a dirty look before she returns to her parchment. Hermes floats back.
He can sneak the jewels later. Right now, he wants to know why Alecto has left her post. She flies into the caverns. Hermes follows and falls still.
He's met his uncle before. Sat near him at meetings. But the man he's seeing now and the man he's seen before do not match up. Hades had always been tall, half-covered in shadows and shifting darkness. His crown sat on his head so dastardly no one but his siblings could bare to look him in the eye. Even Ares, strong and bull-headed as he was, cowered ever so slightly when Hades walked in.
Alecto speaks low as she settles near him. He listens quietly then nods, speaking near silent. Ghosts mill around, chipping at walls and pushing carts of shiny jewels.
He seems simpler now. There is no darkness, there is no crown. His pale arms are exposed. His legs. His face.
His eyes are blacker than the void, and Hermes finds himself falling into them, falling, falling, falling. His voice is a soft thing. Coaxing. Deep beneath his bones, Hermes feels himself crave something. A falling again. To lower himself. To rip out his own beating heart and hand it over without question.
The ruby red pomegranate filters back into his mind. He swallows around thick saliva of want and wearily steps back. Alecto mutters something and flies away. Hades turns and Hermes falls.
His smile is gentle, soothing. Everything is alright, it says. It's time to go.
"Hermes," he says and his voice is like a song. Upstairs, it is rigid, cutting and sharp. Like a blade. But here it's almost like medicine, healing parts of Hermes's soul he didn't know were damaged. "I was wondering when you were going to say hello." He cocks his head, like a pup, and it's almost laughable. It's cute, which doesn't make sense. Kings of the dead should not be cute. But Hades is. In a older matured sort of way. "Did you see everything you wanted to see?"
He knew. He knew Hermes was here and nosy. Of course, he did. This is his realm, his home. It shares his name and it is him, done to the bones.
"I was curious," he says slowly.
Hades's eyes glitter. Like stars. Like diamonds. "Yes, I know." He gestures loosely around him. "They were all curious once too." He laughs and it is sweet. The souls around him shimmer and bend with the sound, as though reaching for him. "Well, except Mac, but she was born of this earth. Nothing to really be curious about when it's in your veins."
The souls wane as his laughter dies.
I am not dead, Hermes thinks. Why does the sound of his uncle instill him with such longing then? He steps back. "Sorry for intruding, Uncle."
Hades looks amused. It fits his face far better than Hermes had imagined. Here he is lively and together. Breathing in the presence of death and wealth, invigorated by what Olympus lacks.
"People don't intrude," Hades says. He pauses. "Well, that's not true. Mortals intrude when they want something. But gods don't. Our family-" He waves his hand dismissively and moves forward. Each step is languid and calm. "-tend to stick to where they feel safest. Mortals will avoid me until they need me. But our family oftens feels I am unnecessary."
Hermes blinks. "Ares doesn't think that."
Hades grins. It is a sharp toothed thing, reflecting bloody war-torn bodies and rapid burials in shredded grass. "Ares likes Thanatos. And the Keres. That doesn't mean he thinks what I do is necessary. I am not the reason people die, nor am I the creator of their deaths."
Hermes blinks and Hades looms over him. It's not scary. Not worrying. There is something comforting in the presence of his uncle towering over him. It feels... Protective.
"They worry," Hades says, "about my proximity to our father and his friends. To the souls I have. My realm will always grow, even when belief begins to fade. The dead will always need a home to come to, even if they have no home in mind. It worries them." He shrugs. "But that's not a concern you need to bother about."
"I-" Hermes falters. He looks away from porcelain skin and glittering eyes and the sweet voice that coaxes him to spill bitter juice across his tongue and stay. "I should go."
Hades steps back. "I'm not stopping you," he says. "But when you want to, try to come back during the day. Charon locks the door at dinner and I wouldn't want you to be waiting too long for everything to open up."
Hermes falters again. Distantly he knows he was going to be come back. Drift in to poke around again. Maybe try to steal some pretty gems. Explore the farm. Check out the heated punishments down in Tartarus or sit in on one of the court proceedings.
There is too much he hasn't yet seen.
But how did Hades know?
Hades just smiles and says, "I told you. No one living walks in here unless they want something." He turns on his heel, to the souls waiting before him with carts of diamonds and emeralds and gold. "You don't have to know what you want now," he continues. He shoots Hermes a pleasant smile from over his shoulder. "But let me know when you figure it out."

The few snippets of dialogue I've seen from from Hermes in Hades 2 really reaffirms a core part of whatever his relationship is to Charon to me: Hermes is extremely invested in making sure Charon has someone to talk to.
Please say hi to him. Please make sure he's doing okay. Please look out for him. Someone needs to be checking in on Charon and be there for Charon when Hermes can't be.
Maybe it's because he recognizes Charon is a loner and doesn't have people who worry about him. Maybe its because he knows Charon has a hard time communicating. Maybe its because Charon is a workaholic and will put the people he cares about before himself. Maybe he just really fucking likes Charon.
Probably all of these. But I had that assumption in the first game, and I'm glad its canonized (or so it seems) in second. Hermes worries about his big skull faced man's mental and social well-being so much that he's asking the children of Hades to take some time out of their big important 'find my mom/dad' quests to make sure boatmen aren't too lonely without they speedy chatty birds.

would you consider writing a charmes reuniting fic after the one you wrote where charon is taken by chronos? charon is so powerful, it tugs at my heart in a particular way that it’s hermes being worried for him (not that he isn’t strong also)
Hi there friend! I do have this in the works at the moment! It might not come out for awhile because of some current life events as well as a few other WIPs I would like to get out first, but a reunion fic is planned! Thank you for reading, I’m so glad you enjoyed my story!

Hades AU: Zagreus and Thanatos swap jobs temporarily
Send me an AU and I'll give you 5+ headcanons about it
1 It started as a simple question: "How hard is it taking souls?" And it ended up with Queen Persephone bringing the job swap to life, much to the headache of Lord Hades, who allowed it anyway as it was nearly impossible for him to deny his wife anything. Thanatos found himself giving scythe-wielding lessons to Zagreus, (Achilles did not have the right set of knowledge for scythes, he's afraid) and Zagreus found himself giving Thanatos the best tips and tricks to finish off an encounter quickly and how to best deal with the bosses at the end of each region.
2 Reaping souls was hard for Zagreus. Especially when the mortals would beg and plead not to die, that they still had so much they wanted to do before their time. The hardest part was reaping those whose times had come far too soon, tears in his own eyes and heart breaking as he claimed their souls. For Thanatos, taking on droves and droves of Lord Hades' legion was not without difficulty, (as the Olympeans didn't really give him any boons, except for Zeus to get a good jab at his brother, and Dionysus but because he thought it was funny), but he had a much easier time with the occupational swap. Dealing with Megaera proved to be quite challenging, as they had never needed to fight each other to the death before. He feels bad whenever he sends her down in red, much to her dismay, but she's still a good-sport about the exchange.
3 Charon and Hermes were shocked when they found Zagreus helping square away souls with them rather than Thanatos. Hermes couldn't resist giving Zagreus a hard time at his big, watery eyes for every soul he would load onto Charon's boat. Telling him 'Not to worry, because one day you'll learn how to do that on the inside' and patting his cheek while saying it. Charon gave him an understanding 'hrrngghhrahhh' and a small hug to make up for Hermes jest.
4 the worst part of the occupation switch for Thanatos was not the endless droves, or battling with the Furies or Lernie, no. The worst part was having to fight Theseus in the coliseum. When he walked in with Stygius molded to an aspect of his own, Theseus became physically incapable of shutting his pie-hole: "THANATOS? DEATH HIMSELF COMES TO CLAIM ME AGAIN? WHY TO THAT I SAY NO SIR! YOU ALREADY TOOK ME ONCE YOU BLACKGUARD AND I'LL BE DAMNED IF I GO DOWN TO YOU AGAIN! COME ASTERIUS LET US PUT DEATH IN HIS PLACE AND SHOW HIM JUST WHO RULES THE COLISEUM! NOW HAVE AT THEE YOU--" "Let us have a good fair fight, Death." Asterius simply says. Thanatos likes the bull-man way more than Theseus. He vaporizes Theseus first every time.
5 Thanatos puts up a good fight, but in the end is taken down by Lord Hades at the very end. Death finally experiences the thing he brings and he learns first-hand how and why mortals fear it. When he materializes back into the House of Hades, he finds a puffy-eyed Zagreus waiting for him, who grapples onto him immediately and says he doesn't have it in him to take souls, its too hard. Thanatos asks if Hermes told him that he'd learn to cry about it on the inside. Zagreus nods fervently and asks how he knows. He responds that 'Hermes told me the same thing when I took my first soul.' It's his way of saying 'you're doing a good job and it's good that you actually care'. Queen Persephone applauds them both at a job well done and how it was a very interesting experience and she would love to see another swap sometime soon. Lord Hades says they already wasted enough time on this and they should all get back to their original jobs. Both Zagreus and Thanatos gain even more understanding and respect for the others' jobs.
