The Good and Bad of Fandom

"Fandoms," as they've come to be known, are groups of people who collectively admire or support a specific item in popular culture, most often television shows, book series, movies, musicians, or performers (Weist 2017). The word 'fandom' is originated from the term “fangirl,” which referred to outspoken female fans. Some of the well-known fandoms today are Army (BTS Fans), Beliebers (Justin Bieber fans), BLINKS (Black pink fans) and Anime Fans (weebs). I'm actually pretty excited about this week's topic, so here's my take on it:

Fandom gives a sense of belonging

According to research, depression and a poor sense of belonging are associated. A willingness to face life's obstacles is created by discovering a stronger sense of purpose and growing in your understanding of the genuine love people have for you (Weist 2017).

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Dr Laurel Steinberg, a psychotherapist and professor of psychology at Columbia University, said that being a part of a fandom group "helps adolescents connect to other like-minded youngsters on social media throughout the year, as well as during concert events." One can better identify their identity and provide meaning to what might otherwise be a regular lifestyle by feeling that they are a part of a community.

Lisa Bahar, a therapist who specialises in working with young girls, attributed this to a period of development known as "Identity vs. Role Confusion," which is a term used in developmental psychology to describe the period in which young adults begin to distinguish who they are from who they were raised to be (Weist 2017). Fandoms can bring positivity, as it gives a sense of belonging to young teenagers who are growing and trying to find their own identity. For instance, when fans interact with their idol on social media and when he or she replies, they get so excited and happy being noticed by their favourite idol. This shows that they are being acknowledged and appreciated by their favourite idols. Imagine if your favourite celebrity liked your social media post, you would be happy too right? I know that will give me so much joy and excitement (I would fangirl too if Justin notices me lmaoooo)

So what makes a fandom toxic?

Personally, I have to admit that fandoms can be toxic, especially if they are a hardcore fanbase. Not trying to throw any shade here, it's just my personal observation as fandoms these days can be really toxic when they're a bit overboard. Being a Belieber myself back then, I admit that our fanbase can be toxic especially when Justin was dating Selena. Tons of fans (including myself) LMAO were super jealous of her. I remember the extreme jealousy has gotten to the point where Selena receives death threats (yikes) and a lot of hate from Beliebers just because they were dating.

According to Lefler (2022), the three key components of the poisonous fandom stew are possessiveness, entitlement, and a sense of superiority. Possession refers to the toxic fans' feeling of ownership over the media they consume. They will behave as though it is theirs alone, and exclusively theirs.

For instance, possessiveness is well-illustrated by the toxic Japanese fans of female pop stars. These fans who act as though they have the right to govern the girls would stalk and harass the girls (Lefler 2022). Other fans may suffer abuse at the hands of toxic fans. This frequently occurs when they believe that only they are the "real" fans and that everyone else is a poser, poseuse, or casual admirer. The majority of their rage is typically directed at those with popular tastes. For instance, when someone admits they just watched the first series, haven't seen every episode of every series, or don't speak Klingon, a passionate, toxic Star Trek fan might feel irritated and start a controversy about who is the 'real fan' and how he or she should watch more to fit in the fanbase.

Another example, as I mentioned before, is Justin Bieber fans or as known as 'Beliebers' can be toxic at times too. Previously, they sent death threats to Selena for being his girlfriend. Now, Hailey Bieber (Justin's wife) receives the same hate and treatment from fans and ironically, is always compared to Selena lol. This is because most people believe that Hailey is just a 'rebound' and most of the fans are not over 'Jelena'. Now, I would say both Justin Bieber and Selena fans can be equally toxic especially when it comes to Hailey and Selena.

Hailey Bieber tells haters (fans of Selena Gomez) to leave her alone

You'd think that by now people would be over the duo formerly known as Jelena, considering that Hailey and Justin Bieber have been married since 2018 (and that he split from Selena Gomez months before they registered for a marriage lisence). However, it seems that people are still not over the couple. After so many years since 'Jelena' broke up, it's crazy how some people are still NOT over their relationship and are still 'shipping' them. According to Savin (2022), Hailey is pretty much done with all the unnecessary hate she has been receiving. She decided to post a new TikTok video begging everyone to 'leave her alone and to stop making unwanted comments on her social media posts.

In the Tiktok video, she expressed her frustration and said, "Leave me alone, at this point... I'm minding my business, I don't do anything, I don't say anything. Leave me alone, please. Enough time has gone by where it's valid to leave me alone, I beg of you truly. That's my only request, leave me alone... be miserable somewhere else." According to Savin (2022), Hailey added that "it's been long enough" even though she didn't specifically mention Selena by name in her video, hinting that the remarks are in reference to the breakup of Selena and Justin's romance. In other words, Selenators (Selena fans) should calm down and move on. I honestly feel bad for Hailey, it's been over a decade get over it guys!

To conclude, fandoms can be both good and bad especially when the obsession and possession gets out of hand. It's important to maintain healthy relationships in our community despite whatever fandom or fanbase you're in. Every fanbase should have boundaries, even if you're a huge 'stan' of your favourite idol. It's never okay to bully or pick on someone either, let alone argue with strangers online over a public figure. Let's all avoid toxicity by respecting each other's opinions and preferences. 🫶🏻

ooo thank you for these questions snowflake anon!! i am unfortunately sick rn so idk how articulate my sick brain is gonna be answering these but i'll try my best

c!wilbur is one of my favorite characters partly because of how great of an actor cc!wilbur is, and how raw he makes all of c!wilbur's emotions feel. but what I really like about c!wilbur is just how complicated he is. it's rare to get a 'villain' character like him (and i use the term villain extremely loosely because I don't actually think he's a villain) be given so much depth and reasoning as to why he is the way he is. he did an absolutely horrible thing, but you can trace exactly where his paranoia and spiral began and follow it all the way to its explosive end, and already he was a very fascinating character just through the l'manberg and pogtopia arcs. but then you got ghostbur, and later on he was revived. ghostbur is such a fascinating way to show another side to such a controversial character, because ghostbur is still c!wilbur despite how much people seem to want to ignore that. all those soft parts of ghostbur exist in c!wilbur, and the lingering trauma of someone you loved and trusted betraying you in such a horrible way quite literally manifesting as a naive and forgetful ghost who insists he's not the same person? idk I just love how complicated it all is with him. and then he's revived, and he's so drastically changed but also still so very the same person he was when he first started that drug van. he's cruel and petty, he can be childish and has manic episodes where he thinks he's the only person in the right, and he's just so utterly selfish. but at his core, he deeply cares about other people and loves so much, and is just a deeply fucked up guy. there's just so many ways to analyze him and so many angles you can look at him from, he's just my brainrot blorbo what can i say lmao

c!tommy i love because he's just... idk how to explain it, but he's genuinely an annoying little shit? but he's still also so deeply good at his very core. like, c!tommy is an asshole, not as much in present day dsmp but before he was genuinely an annoying shit, but there's something so genuine and earnest about him that despite that, you can't help but be fond of him, y'know? i love how emotionally intelligent he is. even if he's a loud-mouthed obnoxious kid who runs around bothering people, he sees way more than people think he does, and he's so smart when it comes to recognizing emotions. in most kinds of media, c!tommy would mostly just be a comic relief character with no depth, or they would pull back a bit with the obnoxious gremlin side of him to make him more appealing to the audience. what i love about c!tommy is that he's allowed to be an annoying shit and that doesn't meant he's not lovable. no matter what, he's good. just... inherently. again i am sick and rambling so this might not make sense but yeah that's pretty much my take on him

Red White & Royal Blue

Red White & Royal Blue is a modern political narrative. This piece of fiction sparked controversy and discussions in the reader’s community; there has been hate and love in perfect tows. Despite every word out there, I thought this book deserved more than my biased opinion. Albeit I can continue gushing over Alex and Henry but this book which is the perfect expression of freedom of press deals with more complexity Casey dabbled in the novel than addressed.

I’ll love to take over each of this one by one, and will try to understand where this book broke out hate and where it warmed hearts and called the book their love of life.

To start with, this book is gay. Very gay. If that wasn’t obvious, I’ll still emphasis we have a fervent gay paradise in this book, and if you have missed it, the very first gay thing Henry who shows he is gay all the time and Alex together did was sharing love letters of lovers in fun emails late at night, early in the morning or in the middle of Jurassic Park turkey crisis. Not to be associated with queer stereotypes, we all know Alex is chivalrously bisexual and Henry is the closeted prince. It starts off as a hate relation then a pretended mess and finally an arcane romance. The romance doesn’t feel forced, it flows smoothly on the page making this book a page turner.

Of course, this gets complication because the devil’s hiding above the tree Alex and Henry kissed below the very first time in a party full of politicians. Perfectly the right place to kiss a prince.

I know, Casey is a genius.

This world is deeply flawed, and inspired by 2016’s political situation in America. The alternate America is no different, yet every character is fictional. We step in the shoes of politics and while I admit politics is a constant argument for debate, Casey on intent took this side to show politicians and how wrecked politics presents itself in the politician’s lives itself. To show the world’s thoughts, Casey used politics as an element to communicate how her world thinks and reacts.

There are many hateful comments, like this

A comment: The First Family Has Been Lying to Us, The American People!! I WHAT ELSE Are They Lying About??!?!

And many slur comments, like this

A comment: lmaoooo wait look at page 22 of the emails alex is such a hoe.

Ahem, moving on Casey took the advantage of her contemporary world to point out whether people in her world like or hate politics through social media. That is well thought.

Another thing to point out is this novel overcomes the race structures in society. You get to read more diverse people than you have ever seen in this novel. And this represents the modern America’s reality which is why I pointed out this is a modern political narrative.

Let’s go over the resolution and Henry’s character before I conclude this review.

Henry is the love interest in this novel. His character is likable. He blushes, is scared of people finding out that he has hots for Alex and clearly shows this and vaguely defends himself he doesn’t like him. His actions are ambiguous to the perfect prince the royal family expects of him. We can feel the pressure set on his shoulders. It generates empathy in readers, a console from a character to a reader.

The book’s resolution is even connected to Henry, this book was not all about Alex, it is also about Henry who feels oppressed by monarchy, however there was one thing that didn’t quite sit with me while I read the last few pages, and it was how Henry developed as a character. There was a lack of relief, perhaps no believability to his growth that was also the end. It felt somehow forced because Henry’s character already had the pressure of another sub-plot submerged with his problems that lead to a rather crass end to the story. I love Alex and Henry’s chemistry, but maybe there was so little place for an intellectual presence of a non-conformity that the ending was a shortcut or not seen coming. This is where I’ll halt. I am in no position to rate this book and hence I’ll leave it on that.

My Anime 9/10′s

With probably no spoilers cuz I don’t wanna talk too long about them zzz.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist

YALL ALREADY KNOW THIS A 9/10. The only real reason this show is not a 10/10 is because it’s just a story that I’d never rewatch. There’s like 70 episodes, which is way too long for my short attention span, especially since I’ve seen it already. But yeah, by all accounts, this story is a masterpiece and is one of the only “shounen” anime’s that I genuinely enjoyed. No random sexualization. No dumb filler. All the characters have an actual purpose and role in the plot and everyone has their own morals and ideals that interact to make the story interesting. I couldn’t bring myself to really hate anyone, even the villains, because everyone was pretty well written. Also super satisfying ending that ties up everything properly without leaving me confused or upset. If you only watch a few anime in your life, Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty much a MUST WATCH to see a beautiful example of a modern classic anime as an artform. Also I should say that I really don’t like Hunter x Hunter (AN EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL OPINION BTW) but I love Fullmetal Alchemist so take from that what you will.

2. Parasyte: The Maxim

Same kinda shit where you already know this a 9/10 for me. It’s just a very satisfying anime that doesn’t have random sexualization or random filler or anything like that. Ending is also very good and ties up the story in a way that doesn’t leave more questions but also allows the characters to have a “life” outside of the scope of the story. I think Parasyte, because of its more horror and psychological-esque vibes, counts as a seinen and not a shounen, so for more mature audiences. I also really liked how the story was successfully adapted to modern times since the manga is from the 80′s. I have actually rewatched this anime, but what stops me from giving it a 10/10 is a few things that I found kinda “stereotypical” that I don’t wanna discuss further too much cuz it’s spoilers. I still obviously really like this anime and highly recommend it.

3. Zankyou no Terror

TBH, this anime is pretty hard for me to properly describe in a lot of words as to why I like it. The art was really pretty as well as the music, which was just straight up amazing. The cinematography of this anime is excellent as well, and a lot of scenes have that sense of being acted out by real people, as opposed to feeling completely drawn/animated. I was a teenager when this anime came out and I think a lot of the themes presented in the show really related to me. The show does kinda have some leftover questions when it ends that prevents me from rating it a 10/10, but I have such a soft spot for this anime. It’s from the same creator as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, and although those two animes are also very good, they did not impact me as much as this anime did. Recommended for people looking for idk something that gives off Inception vibes?? In the sense that it’s much more about its themes and its message more so than the believability of the events that occur.

4. Magic Kaito 1412

THIS IS JUST A PERSONAL PREFERENCE BTW LOLOL I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY WHO’D PUT THIS AS A 9/10 ANIME. I JUST REALLY LIKED IT OKAY. It’s made by the same person who does Detective Conan but I like this a lot more because it’s a much shorter series and slightly more mature (more for teens than just straight up kids). I really liked the main guy, I think he’s funny and charismatic. He’s a pervert at times but Imma forgive that cuz of the 90′s. Idk it’s just a really fun anime that I don’t have to take seriously and can just watch and enjoy.

5. Mob Psycho 100 (season 1 AND 2)

Imma put season two as slightly better than season one. So season one would be like a 9 and season two is like a 9.25 for me. Super super funny anime and I like it SO much more than One Punch Man. I liked that there was a good balance of serious moments, but you can definitely still count this anime as a comedy. I’m typically not the type to watch “comedy” but this anime genuinely had me laughing out loud, while also crying and freaking out right alongside the main character. The main guy is super great because he’s just this shy and sweet middle schooler, and it’s really interesting watching him balance trynna have a normal life while also using his powers for good and such. Apparently the anime was decently faithful to the manga and there’s apparently enough material for a third season so I’d be pretty stoked for a season 3, but season 2 ended on a pretty good spot and was satisfying. TBH, if I had the time, I’d probably rewatch both seasons and bump it up to a 10/10.

6. Vinland Saga

This anime is just the first season of what I hopes to be a whole series that will be stay beautifully and faithfully adapted from the manga. As someone who read very far into the manga (but quit like years ago simply because I hate slow updates lol), I actually didn’t enjoy watching the anime at first. I was impatient and kept waiting for when like the “major” events would happen. So I watched like three episodes and quit. But when I had some free time, I decided to get stuck in and commit to watching the whole series and I was so pleasantly surprised with just how good it was. I was impatient but I needed to realize that there is no “filler” or like “wasted time” in the entire anime. I hadn’t read the manga in years, so so many things were only vaguely familiar but I think this helped me stay surprised and excited throughout the anime. I’m looking forward to the rest of the manga being adapted because it’s just a good Viking saga lolol. Major themes of stuff like growing up, violence vs. peace, what it means to be a good person, etc. Lots of blood and LOTS of violence like a LOT they are VIKINGS CMON but tbh not really any gore which I liked cuz gore makes me ughhhh. A very good watch and only a taste of an excellent story.

7. Demon Slayer

It’s just Demon Slayer duhhh. Of course this a 9/10 for me. I don’t wanna write much just cuz the show is so popular. Just read a REAL review of this anime somewhere else lmaoooo. Also yes I did watch the movie in theaters and yes I liked it a lot as well mmkay. I’m mad hype for season two. My S/O doesn’t like Demon Slayer as much as me, but also has Hunter x Hunter as their all time favorite anime. Do with that information what you will lolol.

8. Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2

Same shit as Demon Slayer. Just go read someone else’s review about why it’s so good lol. Also, unlike Mob Psycho 100, I can’t include all of the seasons in this, because I have very various opinions about how good/bad the other seasons were. But this season 3 part 2, was just plain and simply amazing. While I might not like each season equally, as a whole Attack on Titan is also a modern masterpiece of storytelling. Read the manga if you can.

9. Great Pretender

I love this anime so much. Such a good and fun wild ride. The whole show is ridiculous but in a fun way. I’m a HUGE fan of heist films, so of course I absolutely enjoyed a heist anime. I’ve watched this show in sub AND dub, due to the fact that everyone is “technically” speaking English the entire time. If you’re a purist, just watch in sub OR dub cuz I did get confused here and there, especially when I would go back to compare language discrepancies. Because basically I did this super high maintenance thing where I switched back to Japanese whenever the main character had flashbacks, since he’s ya know, Japanese. The dub also has this confusing thing where the first five minutes or so are still in Japanese, but switches to English when a little cue card on the screen goes “For the Viewers sake, everything from now on will be translated to Japanese.” It’s cuz in the sub, the inverse obviously happens where the characters are initially speaking broken English to each other, but for convenience sake, everything from that point on will be in Japanese. It’s confusing at first but I liked it cuz it just proved the whole international vibe of the show. It’s funny either sub or dub when they joke about how bad the main guy speaks English, cuz in the dub he’s speaking perfect English, while the sub has him not speaking English at all. But anyway, great anime that WOULD have gotten a 10/10 if not for the last episode. Like without spoiling ... WTF WAS THAT LMAOOOO. The anime as a whole is super wacky and zany but at least I could try to think it’s real life, but that last episode was just so unbelievable and bizarre and pulled my suspension of disbelief into the STRATOSPHERE that I just had to convince myself that this show takes place in some improbable alternate reality where something like what happened in the last episode is at least 5 percent possible CUZ HOW DID ANY OF THAT WORK LMAOOO??? Once again, great show, one of my absolute favorites, BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH WTF.

10. BNA

Good super underrated anime that I don’t hear people talk about at all. If Beastars is anime Zootopia, then BNA is Disney Beastars lmaooo does that make sense? It’s a lot more fun and zany than Beastars and I liked it way more. Made by the same people who made Kill la Kill. I really like that more classic, animated “cheap” art style that the anime has, and I also really liked the plot of the story. Not a 10/10 cuz the show does leave a few unanswered questions at the end of it, but this show was such a fun and interesting ride. When I finished the last episode, I was left with a big smile on my face because I just genuinely enjoyed this anime. Recommended if you wanna watch something a little unique and more on the silly and wack side. Talks about some serious stuff, but luckily the show never takes itself TOO seriously, and remains overall lighthearted for a fun action/sci-fi show.

I don’t write meta much anymore but I had to leave my thoughts about the last Death in Paradise ep:

- In hindsight, I feel like this particular take on a Richard return would’ve been a lot more rewarding if it had been a complete surprise. The building up of his ‘return’ really suggested something more than 2 minutes of being Camille’s conscience on the beach.

- What’s more, I find it hard to believe more wasn’t planned at some point given that the 2 parter dealt with a case about a guy faking his death, etc. I think it’s POSSIBLE that if not for COVID more of a plotline like this was planned for Richard wherein he faked his death, maybe would’ve been around longer. I think the coincidence is just very strange, but this is just my take and I could just be doing some wishful thinking lol.

- All this said, I think they did a great job with what they had and I find it ENDLESSLY romantic that Richard lives on with Camille. They’ve really been together this whole time. I know opinions on death and what happens afterward are controversial and dependent on one’s own faith, philosophies, etc, but I related to it in the sense that I feel people I’ve loved, who’ve passed on still sometimes visit me in dreams or thoughts, so I think it WAS him, not JUST Camille’s imagination, and I think he remains with her.

-Also I think it’s very Richard Poole of him to have been basically living alongside Camille long after his death, about 7 years, and he still hasn’t outright told her he loves her lmaoooo. To his credit tho he seems much more emotionally available now and also sitting on the beach crosslegged, so perhaps death has given him some personal growth after all.

- Another benefit of this arrangement is that you can imagine Richard in The Good Place alongside Tahani, Eleanor, Chidi, Jason and Michael. If you want. And you can imagine one day Camille will join him in the good place and they’ll go on double-dates with Eleanor and Chidi. Maybe f*ck on the beach near Janet’s kill-switch. You can imagine that if you want. It’s free.

I kiiiind of answered this already, with Bev and Richie - but it's not a hugely popular ship really. But my previous opinion on them still stands - to me they're super super close best friends and I just can't imagine them in a romantic relationship,,

Zuko and Sokka are a huuuuge ship now since the release Atla on netflix?? But I just see them as such a great brotp! I can't ship Sokka with anyone but Suki I'm sorryyyyy

another controversial one! Eleven and Mike - stop booing me I'm right - because I really wish they'd have taken them in the direction of brotp, rather than romantic interests. I just think it would have given them an even stronger bond and would have fed into the idea of Found Family even more (which is one of my favourite tropes). Then Hopper and Mike wouldn't have had the 'cringey dad with his daughter's first boyfriend' conflict either.

I wish shows and movies would stop downgrading familial love, because it can be just as powerful as romantic love.

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

I sort of answered this one too in the previous batch of answers - any ships involving Pennywise. But ship him with any of the Losers especially, and I will be fetching my broom.

I don't care about his 'tragic' backstory or being 'possessed', I really don't. He basically abuses his little sister! being possessed doesn't give him a get out of jail free card, and deciding at the very very last minute that he's actually not totally evil is too late for me lmao

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

I can't actually think of an example for this one ahaha. Maybe Audra? Bill's wife. I like the idea of Bill being able to fix his marriage, just because it's another angle on adult relationships after ch2 - Stan's happily married, Eddie and Bev get divorces, and Bill repairs his marriage - but it's a very unpopular opinion because everyone sees Audra as an obstacle to Bill and Mike getting together. Don't get me wrong - I love Bill and Mike, but I like Audra too!

Also Nancy from Stranger Things! If they can fix her character and take her back to being badass again, I'll be happy. I don't like her as much after season 3, but I like her more than the fandom in general does lmao

leather and some others animal products are not on the slightest unethical. when you've got big meat production and you don't use every part of the animal, it's not just waste but it's also cruel and disrespectful to the animal. there will never be a time when everyone is going to be vegan, so those animals are going to die regardless, you might as well honour them by making every little bit useful. plus, real leather and real fur (i don't count those animals that die only for the fur in this, i am talking about meat produce) are way better for the environment than fake ones, they last much much longer and they don't pollute like the fake ones (that are plastic, even the biodegradable ones).

no one is past the point of redemption. everyone is a product of the environment and we can all learn to be better. even the people that had done horrible things still deserve a second chance, deserve to be rehabilitated and become better. that however doesn't mean the people directly hurt by them need to forgive them, they just don't deserve to die or be locked away for the rest of their lifes, which leads me to my next and final point

prisons aren't about punishing the wrong doings, but about making the wealthy wealthier. prisons should be about rehabilitation, but so far the greatest majority of them serve only to aggravate inequality.

also pharma is such an interesting character given the context of him like, trying to strike a bargain w/the djd to keep them from destroying delphi, but that arrangement inevitably kinda making him lose it as the situation escalates. he’s also just really entertaining bc i feel like he kins the joker or st and probably gets into really heated arguments w/people on twitter about just abt anything

another important facet of pharma’s character becomes clear around this time as well - how he’s really into ratchet. i also choose to read them as awful exes tbh, it makes their dynamic even more entertaining

also, was killmaster even a character before mtmte? or, if he was, was he an important one? it would crack me up the most if he literally didn't exist at all, but any way you spin it is still funny

i love the pretty fucked up reveal of ratchet having stolen pharma’s hands. like, damn dude.

and that wraps up the delphi arc! our first true ‘arc’ of mtmte, and a fantastic one at that. short and snappy and fresh, with some very clever writing and cool new characters, and a lot of great plot threads to be picked up later. plus, we got to see the beginnings of drift and ratchet’s whole thing (and ratchet and pharmas whole thing). and the lost light gets some much needed extra medical staff, so everyone wins!

well, we’ll see how fort max feels about this all pretty soon.....
