Correct me if I'm wrong, but Earthbenders don't have a time they get stronger like fire/waterbenders.
Personally I think they make up for it by having like 5 sub-bending types (sand, lava, glass, metal, and presumably bones). Which is absolutely wild if you ask me.

Katara's Legacy in LOK: "Healer Wife of the Avatar" (part I)
I only recently finished watching all of The Legend of Korra from start to finish. Based on the analyses I’ve read from the time the show was airing, there seemed to be a decent amount of backlash against how the adult gaang was portrayed - particularly Katara. LOK’s fanbase has grown since then, though, especially during the 2020 renaissance, and I was surprised by how many recent positive comments I’ve seen from fans on Katara’s role.
Because if you paid attention at all to Katara’s characterization compared to Aang, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, it’s clear just how much Legend of Korra has tarnished her “legacy” or lack thereof.
I will be splitting this analysis of lok!Katara into two parts:
First, I will break down her portrayal in the show compared to the other members of the gaang to demonstrate how Katara received the worst treatment from the writers. Though I did have problems with the other characters’ portrayals as well, I don't have time to discuss them in-depth in this post. Then, I will counter common arguments used in defense of lok!Katara’s portrayal on the grounds that they do not provide an adequate in-universe explanation for her character’s drastic change from ATLA.
For part 1, I decided to examine everything we know about the gaang after the original series only based on the information provided via Legend of Korra (excluding poor Suki, who is never mentioned at all). For each character, I will answer the question “What do we know about [character] based solely on their role in Legend of Korra?”
Sokka
Tumblr media
Assuming we have never watched ATLA before, what do we know about Sokka based on LOK?
Well-respected for his wisdom and leadership, as he was Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, a councilman in Republic City (Representative of the Southern Water Tribe), and the chairman of the United Republic Council
Played a significant role in Yakone’s bloodbending trial - moderated the Council’s deliberations and announced their decision to find Yakone guilty
Worked together with other political/military leaders - Zuko, Tenzin, and Tonraq - to protect Avatar Korra by designing prisons for Red Lotus members that would be impervious to their bending
Toph mentioned they were friends in their youth, describing a time he was stuck in a hole when she was trying to teach Aang earthbending
Sokka, Toph, and Aang seemed to have remained friends into adulthood as they all worked together to defeat Yakone
Fond of his trusty boomerang, which he claimed to have used to win a fight against a man with combustion abilities
Due to his achievements, has a statue built in his honor in front of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center in Republic City
Zuko
Tumblr media
Assuming we have never watched ATLA before, what do we know about Zuko based on LOK?
Former Fire Lord and co-founder of the United Republic, who worked with Avatar Aang after the 100 years war to transform the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations
Zuko and Avatar Aang had a rocky start, as Zuko described a time when he once hired a man with combustion abilities to kill Aang in his youth, but they eventually became close friends
Acted as Aang’s counsel and was described as being the person who knew Aang better than everyone else, leading Korra to turn to him for advice
Good friends with the Southern Water Tribe - worked with Sokka, Tonraq, and Tenzin to imprison Red Lotus members that wanted to kidnap Korra, specifically working with Unalaq and Tonraq to build a prison to hold P’Li
Years later, continued to work against the Red Lotus when they broke out of prison
Investigated the prison break of Ming-Hua, sent word to Lin Beifong to protect Korra, then flew off on his dragon to stop the Red Lotus from breaking P’Li out of prison
Fought Ghazan using his firebending during the Red Lotus break-in
Discussed the Red Lotus situation with Lin, Korra, and the others, before leaving early on Druk (his dragon) to return to the Fire Nation and protect his family
Despite being in “retirement,” remains an active participant in international relations - makes appearances as Prince Wu’s coronation and Jinora’s airbending master ceremony, along with engaging in discussions with President Raiko, Tenzin, and Tonraq about the future of the Red Lotus after Zaheer was imprisoned again
Highly respected and honored for his achievements - Bolin and Mako were impressed to meet him, statue was built in his honor in Republic City
Had a close relationship with his Uncle and his surviving family include his daughter, Fire Lord Izumi, and his grandson, General Iroh II
Toph
Tumblr media
Assuming we have never watched ATLA before, what do we know about Toph based on LOK?
Previous Chief of Police in Republic City, founder of the first metalbending police force, founder of the first metalbending academy
Renowned for inventing metalbending, which is utilized for the development of modern technology and innovation in Republic City and the Earth Kingdom (particularly, Zaofu, is regarded as the safest city in the world due to it being made entirely out of metal)
To honor her metalbending achievements, there are several statues of her in Zaofu
Good friends with Avatar Aang, whom she affectionately named Twinkletoes, and was his earthbending teacher
Worked with Aang to arrest Yakone and was present at Yakone’s trial
Acted as a mentor to Korra, helping Korra face her fears and trained with her
Despite her old age and grumpy personality, Toph remained a strong fighter - easily able to beat Korra during training sessions, take down Kuvira’s sentries, and successfully break into Kuvira’s prison using her earthbending and metalbending abilities
States that her fighting days are over due to her old age, but has no problem fighting to save her family when they are captured by Kuvira (twice)
No interest in involving herself in current political problems in the Earth Kingdom, but will defend her family from political forces that threaten them
Strained relationship with her daughters (Suyin and Lin) because of how busy she was with her job, giving them too much freedom as she didn’t want to be as strict as her own parents
Covered up for Suyin’s crimes to save her reputation, leading her to retire early from guilt
Eventually repairs her relationship with her daughters - admitting she wasn’t a great mother but had great kids
Spent rest of her life living alone in a swamp, mentioning she has previous experiences with the visions it produces
High reputation in Republic City - has a statue of her built in front of police headquarters, Asami is impressed by her, Bolin calls her his hero
Aang
Tumblr media
Assuming we have never watched ATLA before, what do we know about Aang based on LOK?
Previous Avatar before Korra, negotiated relations between people of all nations to keep peace and balance and served as the bridge between the Spirit World and natural world
Worked with his closest friend Zuko to transform the Fire Nation Colonies into the United Republic of Nations after the war
Lost his entire culture of Air Nomads to genocide during the hundred year war and was devastated - his greatest dream was frequently described as rebuilding the Air Nation and reviving Air Nomad culture
He began to do this by founding the Air Acolytes, who preserved the culture, practices, and teachings of the Air Nomads passed on from Aang
Placed all of his hopes and dreams for the future on Tenzin's shoulders, his only airbender son
Deeply connected to the Spirit World and was an esteemed spiritual leader, hoping his son would one day experience the same
Traveled the world with Tenzin so he could learn as much as possible, but was so focused on doing his duty to the world that he never had time for his other kids, Kya and Bumi, whom he had with his wife, Katara
Kya and Bumi felt like a disappointment to their father for not being airbenders and Bumi never felt connected to his father’s culture until he became an airbender later in life
Aang’s acolytes did not even know Aang had other children besides Tenzin
All of this seems to indicate Aang valued the ability to airbend the most in his children, leading to his waterbending/nonbending kids being neglected
Greatest flaw mentioned as his tendency to cut and run when things get tough
Despite all this, he was highly respected and admired by most characters in the show for all his achievements as Avatar and his wisdom
Assisted in the arrest of Yakone with Toph, a friend of his, and used energybending to remove Yakone’s bending
Gave Korra advice along with restoring her bending and bestowed upon her the ability to energybend
His grandkids (Meelo, Jinora, and Ikki) enjoyed hearing stories about his youth, such as his visit to Wan Shi Tong’s spirit library and his time with Guru Pathik at the Eastern Air Temple
Described as natural leader by Tenzin, sweet-tempered by Lin, and was good friends with Iroh
He built the air temple on Air Temple Island and in his honor, Aang Memorial Island was named after him and a statue of him was built
He’s so well-known and respected that there are even Aang-themed carnival games at the South Pole
Katara
Tumblr media
Assuming we have never watched ATLA before, what do we know about Katara based on LOK?
Described as the best healer in the world, responsible for teaching Korra how to heal, and mentioned to be a waterbending master
Monitored Korra’s avatar training and spoke to the Order of the White Lotus when Korra was ready to begin airbending training
Declared bloodbending illegal, but was not present for Yakone’s capture or trial
Attempted to restore Korra’s bending after Amon took it, but failed
Failed to heal Jinora when she was trapped in the Spirit World
Tries to guide Korra’s healing process after she is poisoned, but is unable to heal her on her own
Worked to heal the injured after Unalaq’s attack
According to Toph, Katara didn’t get involved in the civil war taking place in her homeland because of her old age
Mentions to Korra she knows what it’s like to go through a traumatic experience but doesn’t elaborate, instead describing Aang’s trauma
Married to Avatar Aang and had three kids - Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi - and three grandchildren - Ikki, Jinora, and Meelo
After Aang and her brother died, she was incredibly lonely, prompting Kya to move to the south pole to be with her. Misses her family that has passed away.
Her kids don’t visit her much, Meelo doesn’t even recognize his grandmother. She cries when Tenzin and his family leave.
Never speaks about her own life, but Jinora asks her once about what happened to Zuko’s mom, indicating they may have known each other.
By reading those summaries, it should be obvious just how differently Katara’s character was treated by the writers compared to the others. Katara’s legacy is reduced to simply being the “healer wife of the Avatar.”
And before anyone tries to twist my words: The problem is not that she is a mother, a wife, and a healer. The problem that is all she is ever allowed to be. Her entire identity revolves around:
Trying to heal people
Being the Avatar’s wife and occasionally offering random pieces of advice about what Aang would do (instead of, you know, giving advice based on her own experiences)
Missing her family
Again, none of these characteristics are inherently negative - the problem is how poorly they are written for Katara’s character. We are told things about her that just don't match up with what is shown in LOK canon. We're told that she’s a world renowned healer, but every time we see her use these abilities, she fails. We’re told that she’s the Avatar’s wife, but he was closest to his friend, Zuko. We’re told that she’s a mother who cares about her family, but we don’t know anything about her relationship with her children (and in fact, we know far more about her children's relationship with Aang).
Katara has no characteristics, no personality outside of her relationship to others - whether she’s acting as a healer, a mother, or a wife (this is some textbook misogynistic writing). She never speaks about herself, never mentions having any friends - only ever speaking about her husband, never describes her life before being a mother or a wife, is never shown to be honored or respected in the way the rest of the gaang is, has no political titles, and has only one post-atla accomplishment to her name. This is in contrast to Aang, Zuko, and Toph - all of whom have children but are never reduced solely to being a parent, all of whom are implied to be close friends, and all of whom have made multiple important contributions to the world of LOK. Even Sokka - who is barely in the show - is shown as having more achievements than Katara. I’m not sure how anyone could see this as doing Katara’s character justice.
Tumblr media
I want to end with this excerpt from the book Avatar: The Last Airbender: Legacy - while not from Legend of Korra, this letter written by Katara to her and Aang's son, Tenzin, is a perfect demonstration of Katara's poor characterization post-ATLA. Despite being written by Katara, this entire letter is about Aang. I'm honestly not sure why the writers didn't just have this letter written by Aang himself because there are no insights that Katara adds to it.
The letter starts with Katara saying that she hopes this letter will help Tenzin "feel the pride of [his] heritage and gain a deeper understanding of who [he is]." And yet this letter never discusses the fact that Tenzin is the son of a waterbender and an airbender, never discusses any of the lessons Katara has learned in her life or the hardships she's overcome, never mentions any part of water tribe culture, never even mentions her own brother or father or mother (family is important to Katara, but apparently the writers only think that her family with Aang matters). The letter is entirely about Aang's struggles and triumphs because post-ATLA Katara doesn't matter outside of her relationship to her husband and kids.

nothing too insightful to say just !!! toph is the disabled character of all time and it means so much to me, personally. thinking specifically about what you mentioned on the last post about how she learns to let herself be loved; it is often such a fundamental aspect of growing up with a disability that “love” is the guise that adults stripping you of agency wear.
it’s not just being helped in a way that harms and deemed incompetent. it’s being perceived as incompetent, receiving help for your disability that strips you of autonomy, being vulnerable to the abuse and unable to speak for yourself in response to it because you are too frail, helpless, all under the premise of “love.” when disabled love becomes the equivalent of burdening another and being taken from yourself, toph is kind of incredible because it took me nearly twenty years to even begin to unlearn all of that, but she managed to open herself up to others within a few months (to varying degrees, it’s also interesting she seems to trust sokka the quickest, maybe i will send another ask after breakfast rambling about that).
but toph’s ability to adjust her concept of what love is and open herself to it, is genuinely one of the most powerful disability arcs i have ever seen. she becomes able to accept help and not have that feel like embodying weakness, which feels dangerous when disabled because your perceived social weakness is why you have been stripped of all agency and dehumanized, esp. as a disabled child. toph is incredibly strong in regards to earth bending, but truthfully it is this ability to listen, observe and adapt that is her greatest strength. her character is soooo good and her arc is so fucking beautiful
YES 💗 i don’t talk about toph’s disability enough because i don’t like getting too personal on here but you really do articulate that struggle perfectly and i agree so much with what you said.
toph’s foundational trauma is tied not to her experience being blind, but rather the abuse she received due to her blindness. the struggle of being disabled is always twofold: firstly, and i hate when people sugarcoat or ignore this, having a physical disability does make life more difficult. we see toph struggle when she’s not in a position to use her earthbending as a mobility aid; there are aspects of life that are difficult or genuinely impossible for her to participate in due to her limitations. she can and does often compensate by being a brilliant earthbender, but there are still some things she simply cannot do.
but what’s more important to toph’s experience with disability is the way she is treated by those around her, especially her parents. toph simultaneously struggles with being coddled and smothered due to her unique needs, denied agency due to the assumption that she is somehow less able to dictate her own choices, and treated like a shameful burden due to her disability. so by the time toph joins the gaang, she is very afraid of being seen as a burden, but she also doesn’t want anyone helping her with anything or telling her what to do, because she associates that with her parents’ abuse.
she bristles when katara tries to get her to help out, because she wants to be the kind of person who respects everyone else’s space and lets everyone be capable of “carrying their own weight,” just as she wants to be allowed to be left to her own devices. she doesn’t yet understand that a community or support network is not the same thing as a denial of agency, and so she assumes that katara is overbearing and motherly instead of a kid who comes from a place where everyone does an equal share of labor and expects everyone else to do the same.
that’s why i think a lot of people who have never experienced any kind of major disability firsthand don’t really understand toph, and just assume she’s spoiled and brash due to being rich and entitled. but that’s not the case at all. she’s spent her whole life being treated like a fragile doll instead of a person, and it’s dehumanizing and isolating. she doesn’t understand the value of a community because she’s sick of people trying to help her, and due to her own experiences being “helped,” assumes that help is necessarily negative and a denial of one’s agency.
the last thing she wants in that situation is to be overbearing, to be the one telling other people what to do and how to live their lives (yet another reason why she would never become a cop). of course, she signed on to be aang’s teacher, so pretty quickly she does have to get over herself and actually instruct, and she’s not a gentle pedagogue either. but she also knows that she is supremely qualified to teach earthbending, and so it’s easier for her to tell others what to do when she knows that her wisdom counts for something and she isn’t just imposing her will onto someone else for the hell of it, or because she doesn’t respect them.
she also definitely takes iroh’s advice to heart, because unlike a certain incorrigible nephew, she’s really wise and emotionally mature, able to respond to measured advice and actually internalize what iroh is saying. so it doesn’t take long for her to develop a bond with sokka where she doesn’t feel afraid to rely on him. and it’s funny, because she accuses katara of being overbearing and motherly, but she does actually listen to sokka and follow his every command, despite her supposed disdain for authority. and i think it’s the fact that even though sokka does sometimes forget that she’s blind, he’s never purposely insensitive, and he never bosses her around for the hell of it.
unlike katara, who is genuinely unkind to toph in “the chase,” sokka never disrespects toph, and he certainly never disrespects her disability. he’ll banter with her about it, like when he says “well you’ve never not seen anything like this” in “sokka’s master,” but the joke isn’t at her expense, unlike “the stars sure are beautiful tonight,” which is straight up cruel and lowkey unforgivable (sidenote: as someone who has been bullied for being disabled, i do think that this is hands down the worst thing katara ever says in the show, and i understand why toph would continue to hold a grudge against her for that for a long time). whereas sokka always treats toph like a person, and toph recognizes that, so she thus not only accepts his help, but actively asks for it and enjoys receiving it.
toph does grow and accept her own vulnerability remarkably fast, but to the gaang’s credit, they are great friends, and they all treat her like a person instead of a burden or a doll (including katara). having people who love you and understand you, both in terms of your strengths and your limitations, is really necessary, for anyone, but especially for disabled people. i’m really lucky to have people in my life who love me like that, and toph’s arc is so beautiful specifically because she is given that love and care and never takes it for granted. i definitely think that toph is one of the greatest disabled characters of all time, and it’s because her disability isn’t simply incidental to her character, but rather the central pillar of her arc that informs all her motivations at all times. she learns to ask for help, and accept help when it’s offered. she finds a community.

Netflix atla live action review ep 1-3
So i was able to watch the first three episodes and i wrote down some thoughts. Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a big post. There's a lot i don't like, but it's not all negative. So let's get the negative out of the way first, then we'll get to the positive.
The cgi is abhorrent. Especially the green screen stuff where a lot of movement is happening. I'm specifically referring to the scenes of Katara and Sokka in the canoe as well as the Omashu railing system, and anytime Aang is flying on his glider. The bending may be better than the original live action, but it's not good either. Bending for me was always gonna be impossible in live action. I never feel like there's any connection between the moves the actor is making and the cgi element. In animation it's much easier to make the two connect, but an actor is basically staring at nothing and moving their hands around a bunch, hoping post will make it look good. This show also fell prey to the "ball of water is consistently losing water and yet remains the same shape and size" trap. I think out of all the elements the airbending looks the best and the earthbending so far the worst. The Avatar state looked very janky as well, some shots looked like there wasn't even an actor there anymore and it was all animated. And not animated in a good way either, some of the movements were way to wobbly, reminding me of that weird broom flying cgi in the first harry potter movie where the character is flopping about awkwardly bc it's badly animated. The animals also look pretty weird to me, i can barely tell where Appa's face is most of the time. Also for some reason they have momo making monkey noises instead of lemur noises? Like he legit sounds like a chimpanzee? I wonder what that's about.
The costumes are very hit or miss. They're very bright and i've often seen them fit awkwardly on the actors. Suki's headband was practically sliding off of her head while doing a fight scene, and in Omashu an extra's headscarf literally slid off of her head as she walked out of frame. Don't even mention Bumi to me either, that guy looks absolutely insane to me and i mean that negative. I can't suspend my disbelief enough to pretend that's a real guy. I liked Suki's makeup however, and i really like how they did Katara's hair and outfit. We got our first glance at Ty Lee and Mai too, and i like that Ty Lee is basically a carbon copy of her cartoon outfit.
Some story choices are.... interesting. Some of them, i'm not sure whether i like them or not yet. I'm confused as to why they combined three different stories into the Omashu storyline. We have Bumi, Teo and the Mechanist, as well as Jet all piled up in the same city, and somehow Zuko is there as well. The Jet story happened way too quickly, and i'm confused as to why Sokka was so upset at Jet's betrayal when he hadn't even spoken to the guy at all, he didn't even know his name. I don't like the choice of having everyone split up in Omashu. There was a lot of focus on Katara and Sokka and Aang barely appeared. I will say i really loved the no bending fight Aang and Zuko had in Omashu. Such a shame that their choreography barely got any time to shine due to the fight scenes being edited like marvel movies to hide mistakes. This has me excited for the blue spirit episode though!
I don't like the way they revealed that Aang is the Avatar in the watertribe. Why is Gran Gran the one that immediately knows? Just bc she's old? I liked that Aang revealed it himself in the original, but in this one it's just Gran Gran telling everyone who he is and Sokka not even believing her.
Then there's the opening for the first episode. I have very mixed feelings. I like that they showed the bond between Gyatso and Aang, and i liked the way they switched between Gyatso's last stand and Aang falling into the water. I'm sticking to my guns however with saying that we didn't need to see the attack on the airtemples play out. I liked it being this mysterious event that happened so long ago it's become legend to anyone alive today. But now, as a viewer, we have more information than our main characters. It also took away from the emotional turmoil of Aang finding Gyatso's skeleton. In the original, there's still this slimmer of hope, are they really dead? Could some still be alive? Only for it to be ripped away then and there. Now the audience already knows Gyatso is dead, we know what Aang is about to find. They also didn't really linger on Aang's emotions after this, like at all? He buried Gyatso and basically went "alright where to next?"
There also seems to be a lot less bonding time, making the relationship between the characters in episode 1 and 2 very weird. Katara and Aang barely had one conversation in the first episode, and Katara was already talking about Aang changing her life and helping improve her bending after only one day. It feels very weird and forced. It gets better by episode 3, but it was definitely bad in the first two.
I'm gonna say it again but i'm mad about Sokka's sexism arc disappearing. Suki was angry at Sokka for just comparing her skills as a warrior to him, when she hadn't even seen him fight yet. She also starts out as being weirdly enchanted by Sokka just bc he's an outsider. He's not even attractive at all, and they're trying to sell him as some sort of heartthrob. I like their bonding time while they trained, but i don't like how immediately Sokka is hung up on her. He still needs to meet Yue, and idk about you but to me it would be weird for him to already like one girl, and suddenly jump to the next.
I'm not sure why Kyoshi is being Aang's main Avatar guide here? I always figured it should be the Avatar right before you that would do the job, so why did Kyoshi get to Aang before Roku? And why did she already give Aang the speech about saving the world? What else is Roku gonna do? I know we get the Hei Bai story in this show, so what's the point of the Hei Bai story when it doesn't lead to Roku's dragon coming to Aang to warn him about the comet? I'm not mad at this btw, genuinely just confused. I don't understand the point yet.
Onto the acting, once again very hit or miss. So far Gordon (Aang) has been one of the best. He's a very good representation of Aang's character, and i like that he brought out Aang's sassier side right away. Kiawentiio (Katara) so far has been really good too, and i like her chemistry with Gordon. I was prepared for Ian (Sokka) to be much worse than he ended up being, and a lot of jokes in the first episode did end up landing for me. Unfortunately the opposite is true for Dallas (Zuko), i was expecting his performance to be better than what it ended up being. It's not bad per se, but definitely less refined than i was hoping. Same for Paul (Iroh). I don't like the way he delivers some lines at all (especially the Jasmine Tea lines, it's way too forced, i don't actually believe he likes jasmine tea rn. In the original uncle barely mentions which tea he's drinking, and only once asks for jasmine tea bc it's his favorite. Otherwise he always just says "cup of tea" and never mentions the flavor. Idk why but the emphasis on jasmine tea really bothered me lol). I really liked Azula so far. Elizabeth brought a very cutthroat energy, which is precisely what i'd expect from a character like Azula. Daniel Dae Kim was also just everything i was hoping for and more. I'm hoping to see more of him (for his acting... no other reason.......)
Idk why but i was elated at seeing the cabbage merchant and hearing him say the line. Best moment of the whole show so far (and that's saying a lot i think lmao).
The music is very good. Some of the placement of the more dramatic music is a bit awkward? Like moments that i feel should have a low quiet melody seem to have a more dramatic flow which makes the scene lose emotional value to me. Maybe that's just my preference though. I like the nods to the original music throughout the show, especially for Kyoshi, the fire nation theme as well as the avatar theme, and then the exact same credits music as the original. I love the more epic/dramatic version of the avatar theme.
Overall, i am enjoying myself. I wasn't expecting greatness from this adaptation, and so far i'm remaining kind of neutral i think. It's not absolutely horrible, and i'm not cringing every five seconds. Of course it's never gonna compare to the beauty of the original animation. That's always going to remain untouchable to me. And this adaptation obviously does not come close at all. But it's fun, i guess, so i'm gonna keep watching.

Update 2: We finally figured out what happened with this whole Kyoshi movie mistake, and it has a pretty mundane explanation lol. Read an in-depth explanation here if you’re interested!
Original post below:
Update: Aang movie is first now in schedule shuffle!
Paramount and Avatar Studios’ slate of animated Avatar movies coming to theaters: Kyoshi (2024), Zuko (2025), Korra (2026)
It’s the post you’ve all been waiting for. I’ve finally compiled, confirmed, and cross-referenced enough sources to feel confident in posting what Avatar Studios’ first three movies are about, in what order, and (with a big grain of salt, okay?) when they’re coming.
You might be aware that there’s been a flurry of Avatar Studios news out of the 2022 Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the last few days-- they revealed that three movies are actively in the works right now, they confirmed my report on the director of the first movie, and they showed the first teaser for it to the press in attendance.
Let’s tackle that teaser first. After checking with a couple of sources who were in attendance, we’re pretty sure that what was shown was General Fong’s fortress, which was first visited by Aang and the Gaang in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book Two: Earth, Chapter One: The Avatar State.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was either this exact clip/screencaps from the original, or something very similar. That visual was followed by text saying “the Avatar returns” (a popular tagline these days) and the earthbending symbol. Which brings us to...
The first animated movie coming from Avatar Studios is the prequel I reported on before, and it’s a “prequel” because it stars the most recent earth Avatar before Aang and Korra: Avatar Kyoshi.
Next, I can confirm that the second movie will be the one I exclusively revealed last month: a story focused on Fire Lord Zuko.
Lastly, and this is a brand-new reveal, the third movie is set in the era of Avatar Korra, after the end of the animated series.
I should note that these are all very high-level descriptions, for example I don’t know the exact focus of the Korra era movie, although I’d personally be willing to bet it will be Korra herself. But ultimately, I guess I should put a disclaimer that I don’t know that level of detail, except for the specific case of the Zuko movie being about Zuko himself. Technically, I don’t know that the Kyoshi movie will “star” her, but I can’t really imagine it won’t, you know?
AS FOR THE DATES. I debated whether to put them or not, but I decided to make things spicy and go for it this time. I want to make it clear that these are NOT my estimates, they are legit info cross-referenced from at least two sources, but...... it’s really early info subject to change and not meant to be any sort of commitment from anyone. I just figured that by the time we get to these years, no one will remember this post. 😂 Release dates could shift around as they almost always do in this day and age, but it’s just because that’s a natural thing that happens. So with all that being said, you can very vaguely look forward to animated Avatar movies coming to theaters once a year starting in 2024, with the first three being:
Kyoshi (2024)
Zuko (2025)
Korra (2026)
(Obviously those are not the movies’ titles.)
This next part is my estimate: I would personally expect LATE 2024 for the first one. Again, it’s super early. As for the rest: again, big grain of salt. As production goes on, maybe they’ll decide they want to do every two years instead, or any number of things that could lead to the slate changing.
It’s just really important to understand that this is just a snapshot of Avatar Studios’ CURRENT plans-- their NOT announced, NOT confirmed plans. I wouldn’t announce or confirm anything this early either, and there’s a good reason they aren’t-- they haven’t even revealed their first ever movie yet, much less committing to a slate. So please keep all that context in mind; don’t expect them to reveal anything about any Korra movie any time soon-- there are two movies before that that probably won’t even reveal anything any time soon. That being said, this is legit info and not just speculation/guessing, and it also might NOT change. I think release dates are honestly highly likely to change, but I don’t think it would be unlikely if the three high-level concepts of Kyoshi/Zuko/Korra stay the same. Assuming my sources are correct about those in the first place of course. :)
Alright, that’s enough disclaimers, I’ll let you run amok now. And yeah. KORRA’S BACK.

Hi, I love your work and was wondering if you've done a post breaking down Earth Kingdom clothing inspiration and what the pieces are called. I'm writing a fanfiction and having a hard time finding info. Thanks!
The thing about the Earth Kingdom is that it's the most populated and diverse of the four nations in-universe. Meaning that each area of the Earth Kingdom has its own unique flavor. Some places are based off of specific Chinese dynasties, others around the various ethnic minorities of China, and some are other Asian cultures entirely.
Tumblr media
Ba Sing Se's aesthetic is based off of the later years of China's Qing Dynasty (1636-1912):

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: The Dai Li (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Royal Earthbender Guards (tumblr.com)
Toph's family and background are meant to appear refined and wealthy so their look is based off of the later years of China's opulent Tang Dynasty (618-907):

Bumi likes to wear Chinese opera clothing and his character is broadly inspired by Lu Bu of the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280):
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Bumi (tumblr.com)
Kyoshi Island is Heian & Edo period Japan mixed with Ainu culture:

When Zuko and Iroh are on the run in the EK, they encounter a Vietnamese town and a Korean village:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Anatomy: “The Swamp” Episode (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Architecture: Song’s Village (tumblr.com)
The tribes of the Si Wong Desert are North African crossed with Mongolian:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Sandbenders (tumblr.com)
Chong and Lily (Secret Tunnel Hippies) wear Tibetan and Hmong clothing, respectively:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Chong (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Lily (tumblr.com)
The refugee family with the pregnant wife is inspired by Yi people:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 1 (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 2 (tumblr.com)
And, with the exception of culturally isolated areas like Ba Sing Se/Si Wong Desert/Omashu/Kyoshi/Foggy Swamp, most men in the EK wear their hair in Taoist topknots:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Earth Kingdom Top Knots (tumblr.com)
So the sort of clothing your characters will be wearing in the EK depends on where in the country they are or are from. If you plan on inventing a new setting that takes place in the Earth Kingdom, try to choose a culture and period that reflects the mood or theme you're trying to get across.

Atla live action spoilers
Here are the easter eggs i found (but i wasnt paying much attention so there are probably more). Going from the last ep downwards:
Pretty sure this one's a reference to Toph's Melon Lord, especially considering that right before these jokes they were talking about finding Aang an earthbending teacher
Tumblr media
The Spirit World's lion turtles like the one that will give Aang the knowledge to take Ozai's bending away so he doesn't have to kill him
Tumblr media
Maybe I'm reaching here but this one felt like a nod to the s3 episode "Zuko alone"
Tumblr media
Referencing the few small scenes in og Atla where we see Uncle Iroh and the crew using musical instruments🎼 + a nod to Zuko's ability to play the tsungi horn
Tumblr media
Not really an easter egg but I like how this line reminds me of s3 Zuko fighting Ozai and telling him that he'll help the Avatar and restore the Fire Nation's honour
Tumblr media
Again, this one was probably Not an easter egg either but there's something about Aang saying the line "I hope you can help me, Avatar Roku" while the camera shows (and then zooms in on) Zuko's journal and more specifically on a spread that's mostly about Roku (Zuko's great-grandfather) and even has a drawing of him + one solo eye which could've been some random doodle, Roku's or maybe Zuko's own eye
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An obvious reference to some of the skipped arcs/episodes from the og (pirates + canyon crawlers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The music🎵 briefly playing here, while Uncle Iroh has a portrait and the casket of his son Lu Ten to one side and Zuko to the other, being Leaves From The Vine🍃
Tumblr media
And then of course there's the cabbage man🥬! Played by the original actor too! But i've run out of photo space on this post so ajsjsjsksksk
Plus Kyoshi's whole "killing" speech because of that conquerer dude she murdered when creating Kyoshi island.
These are the only ones I personally spotted but I'd love to know the others!

The Cycle Repeats: Part I
One of the key themes of the ATLA franchise is the concept of the Avatar; master of all 4 elements, the fusion of humanity and Raava, the spirit of light and order, whose sole duty is to bring balance to the world, and be the bridge between both the physical and spiritual realms. Along with this comes the idea of reincarnation, which is the premise of the Avatar Cycle, the idea that the Avatar reincarnates in a cyclic order in any of the four nations (fire, air, water, earth). Another concept related to the Avatar Cycle (although originating from the fandom) is the idea of the Avatar fixing the mistakes of their past life, which is often indicated in differences in both habitual circumstances and personalities between both predecessor and successor, and therefore differences in morality.
But what if I were to tell you that the saying "history repeats itself" is also true among Avatar incarnations? Not exactly going the same way, but rather parallels between the lives, personalities, and accomplishments (and failures) of past lives?
In this series of metas, I will be going over parallels (or in some cases, foils) between certain pairs of Avatars that lived decades, or even centuries apart, and yet could not have ever been more similar.
The Unlikely Analogy: Avatars Aang and Kuruk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Aang was an Air Nomad born in 12 BG and the Avatar during the Hundred Year War, succeeding Avatar Roku and preceding Avatar Korra. As the Avatar of his time, he was the only person capable of using all four bending arts: airbending, waterbending, earthbending, and firebending. He was also one of a select few Avatars and one of the first in many cycles to learn the ancient art of energybending as well as the first Avatar known to have actively used the technique."
"Kuruk was the Water Tribe Avatar immediately succeeding Avatar Yangchen and preceding Avatar Kyoshi. Native to the Northern Water Tribe, he was a powerful and gifted bender who dreamed of changing the mortal world for the better by uniting the people and acting upon the foundations laid by Yangchen."
Both texts above are directly taken from the first paragraphs of their respective wiki pages; however, you would be forgiven for believing they are nothing alike, specifically due to their respective heritages. In reality, I would wager that Aang and Kuruk are actually the same person (literally and metaphorically).
(WARNING: There will be possible spoilers for both The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi, particularly regarding Kuruk's backstory. If you do not wish to be spoiled, I suggest not reading any further and scrolling past this post until you have finished reading both novels. You have been warned.)
Kuruk's legacy plays a central role in both Kyoshi novels, especially in the Shadow of Kyoshi, where it's revealed that Kuruk hunted and killed dark spirits. This lead to both his body and spirit falling apart and him dying at just 33.
The first parallel is, ironically, their heritage. Aang is an Air Nomad, and his native element is air. Kuruk is a Water Tribesman, and his native element is water. Air and water are compatible in the sense that water can literally be described as a combination of the qualities of earth and air. Like earth, water can be strong and solid. Like air, water can be gaseous, fluid, and unpredictable. However, water also has an intermediate liquid state, with a definite volume, but always changing shape. Something about being the element of change or something. Just like the Avatar Cycle. I actually wrote a meta dedicated to this subject.
Why am I mentioning this? It's because the first element Aang learned to master (besides air, ofc) is water (which was also the element that was easiest for Aang to learn besides his own, due to air and water having similar philosophies), and he first learned to waterbend in the Northern Water Tribe, Kuruk's home (although he only learned the basics with Master Pakku; he only mastered it under the tutelage of his companion Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, who is also part-NWT). Conversely, the last element Kuruk learned to master was air, and he mastered airbending at the Southern Air Temple, Aang's home (he learned to master it under the tutelage of his companion Monk Kelsang, and it can also be assumed hat it was the element that was easiest for Kuruk to master besides water). Both Kelsang and Katara go on to become mentors to Kuruk and Aang's successors, Kyoshi and Korra respectively.
Another parallel is that both Kuruk and Aang were successors to wise and influential Avatars of their time (Avatars Yangchen and Roku respectively). As I have said in the first paragraph of the introduction, I mentioned the idea of the current Avatar fixing the mistakes of his/her predecessor. In The Shadow of Kyoshi, it is revealed that Yangchen neglected the spirit world, often siding with humans when making decisions between them. This lead to an increase of corrupted spirits ravaging the physical world during Kuruk's time by passing through rifts created by Father Glowworm, some attacking up to a dozen villages in one day. In the episode The Avatar and the Firelord (Book 3: Episode 6), it's revealed that Roku, by refusing to kill Firelord Sozin, was unable to prevent the Air Nomad Genocide and, by extension, the Hundred Year War. Both Kuruk and Aang had to face the consequences of their revered past lives.
Also, Kuruk ended up spending so much time in the spirit world that he ended up neglecting his duties in the physical world. He also started leading a lifestyle filled with alcoholism and debauchery, both as a coping mechanism and as a smokescreen to hide his duties from his Team Avatar (Jianzhu, Kelsang, and Hei-Ran). This means that both Aang and Kuruk have avoided their Avatar duties, but due to different reasons. Aang ran away because he didn't WANT to be the Avatar, while Kuruk ran away because he NEEDED to be the Avatar.
Kuruk hid his illness from his friends because he wanted to protect his predecessor, Avatar Yangchen's legacy (she often sided with humans over spirits when making decisions between them), and because he worried for his friends' safety. Both Aang and Kuruk share a common fear: being unable to save their loved ones from despair. This can be tied to the episode Nightmares and Daydreams (Book 3: Episode 9), where Aang suffered with anxiety nightmares the night before the Black Sun invasion. One series in particular consisted of his friends, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and Toph, suffering, with Aang unable to save them, and Kuruk's refusal to confide in his friends to keep them safe (which could be a result of two of Yangchen's companions sacrificing their lives to protect her, and Kuruk not wanting to repeat it). The difference is that unlike Kuruk, Aang did confide in his friends (more accurately, you could say that his friends confided in him, as he was the only one able to defeat Firelord Ozai), and in the end, they all played a role in defeating Ozai.
This isn't even taking account the Kummi-Taang theory, which indicates more parallels between them both. To give a simple run-down, the theory states that Toph is a reincarnation of Ummi, Kuruk's wife, whose face was stolen by the spirit Koh The Face Stealer, hence why Toph was born blind, and why Aang met her in the mystical swamp in the episode of the same name (Book 2: Episode 4). I'll post another link to the actual meta dedicated to it:
On a more positive note, both Kuruk and Aang are stated to be bending prodigies, Kuruk especially. They each invented an airbending technique at the Southern Air Temple during their airbending training, demonstrating their unique creativity and adaptability (Kuruk's technique involved creating a cushion of air under a heavy object so it could be slid and moved over a floor with care, Aang's technique, the air scooter, is a spherical "ball" of air that can be ridden balancing on it like a top). Aang had already learned 35 of the 36 tiers of airbending at the time, so it would be rather ironic if Kuruk's technique was the only one Aang hadn't mastered at the time; however, I do have a theory that both techniques are connected, which I will discuss in a separate post. Aang earned his airbending mastery tattoos, and had Kuruk been an Air Nomad, he woud have gotten the same tattoos. Though, he did get a sky bison as a gift, and Aang's animal companion was a sky bison (Appa).
Tumblr media
I noticed that the only time Kuruk actually wears his iconic polar bear headdress is when Aang summons him in the episode Sozin's Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters (Book 3: Episode 19), not counting his brief appearance in The Avatar State (Book 2: Episode 1). In The Old Masters, Aang summons the past four Avatars before him for advice on how to defeat Firelord Ozai. According to @atlaculture, Kuruk's decision to wear the headdress in front of Aang--a strict vegetarian--could be him subtly reminding Aang that killing isn't always merciless (as Kuruk was a hunter, and probably had to hunt down large animals for food or as a rite of passage), which is stated here.
I noticed the line Aang says just before he summoned Kuruk:
"I need to look deep inside myself."
Despite the existence of the webcomic Escape from the Spirit World, which takes place between Books 2 and 3 (although Yangchen did say Aang wouldn't remember his journey in the Spirit World), this lines implies that out of Aang's past four lives, Kuruk's is the one he knows least about (Roku was Aang's predecessor, Aang probably knew/learned a lot about Kyoshi during his visits to the Earth Kingdom, and Yangchen, being an Air Nomad like Aang, was revered almost as a god-like figure across the four nations). Ironically, if you dig deeper, Kuruk is also the past life who was/is most similar to Aang.
Also, Kuruk's actual advice to Aang was: "Aang, you must actively shape your own destiny and the destiny of the world." This piece of advice has multiple interpretations. What Aang interpreted was Kuruk telling him to kill Ozai (combined with the fact that Kuruk was wearing a literal animal skin in front of Aang, only reinforcing his interpretation). However, Kuruk never said anything about killing Ozai. He could have actually meant that to him, it doesn't matter how Aang defeated Ozai, or even if Aang did kill him. To Kuruk, the only thing that mattered was Aang performing the act of Showing Up, and actively finding a way to defeat Ozai himself. Therefore, Aang obtaining energybending and then taking Ozai's bending away rather than killing him doesn't mean he didn't follow any of the Avatars' advice. On the contrary, by actively finding a third option to end the war, and actively participating in the final battle, Aang actually subconcisiously followed Kuruk's advice to heart (although you could say Aang didn't follow Kuruk's advice, since Aang didn't actively seek out the lionturtle; rather he was merely kidnapped by chance).
The final parallel between Aang and Kuruk is their relatively young deaths; more specifically, their final wishes. Kuruk died at just 33, surrounded by his Team Avatar, and he made them promise to take care of his successor and make sure she succeeds as the Avatar. Around 500 years later, Aang died at a relatively young biological age of 66 (and the chronological age of 165) surrounded by his Team Avatar and the Order of the White Lotus, and he made them promise to do the exact same thing. However, both Yun and Korra ended up growing up isolated from the rest of the world, and being told that being the Avatar was the only thing that mattered, which led to a serious mental stunt, even though it wasn't Aang's fault Korra ended up being kept in the Southern Compound on the orders of Tonraq, Tenzin, and Sokka, or Kuruk's fault that Yun was being physically and mentally abused by Jianzhu and Hei-Ran. The only difference was that Korra was correctly identified as the Avatar, but Yun wasn't. Kyoshi did not grow up the same way, but she was not spared either; I'll make a meta on her too. But seriously, how in the four nations is it possible for two people who lived centuries apart die with the exact same wish given to their loved ones? Unless they were the Avatar.
In conclusion, despite the difference in Aang and Kuruk's heritage, morality, and overall results as the Avatar, one could argue that it is true that certain beats in the cycle often repeat, depending on their journeys, personalities, and abilities. In the next part, I will explore the parallels between Avatars Aang and Kyoshi, Kuruk's successor.

(I may have posted something like this before but IDC trying to search for my posts is hard)
While Katara and Zuko’s relationship is obviously admired in their time, in the decades and centuries after their deaths their romance becomes semi-mythologized like Oma and Shu (many people believe they were the reincarnated first earthbenders, finally allowed to be together). They become a shorthand for a relationship that faced impossible odds which were ultimately overcome, sort of a positive Romeo and Juliet.
Popular depictions have Zuko marrying Katara despite the protestations of his court, while Katara marries Zuko despite her disapproving father and brother… when in reality by the time they got together Zuko had cleaned house, with most of the old nobility either dead or imprisoned forever, with his court now filled with progressives who cheered the Union. As for their part, Hakoda and Sokka were two of the biggest cheerleaders for the relationship.
Thanks to the letters they wrote to each other, Zuko and Katara’s personalities remain remarkably accurate over the centuries: both stubborn and quick to argue, but utterly devoted to each other and to making the world a better place. That’s not to say that inaccuracies don’t pop up. For instance, Katara’s typically portrayed as publicly stern, when in reality she was a woman of the people. However, the false characterization of Zuko is the far funnier one.
See, Zuko is cursed with the ability to write eloquently, and speak terribly. He can write beautiful prose but can’t smooth talk for shit save for the most random moments. However, since his written words are preserved, including dozens of soppy poems for Katara, he gets a posthumous reputation that turns his name into a byword for “romantic” similar to how we use “Romeo” or “Casanova”. As such, famous depictions of Zuko usually have him as a charismatic flirt, even during his banishment.
[and a fair few times, over the years, these depictions, whether on stage or screen, have been watched by a specific series of couples. One tends to have darker hair and a rougher past and prefers warm colors. The other is a bit gentler but has a great deal of their own, and prefers blue and cool colors. They usually were enemies or rivals at some point, but have usually grown past that by the time they watch a play or movie or show about Katara and Zuko. The one who likes warm colors typically feels oddly embarrassed whenever the fictionalized Zuko recites words taken from the real Zuko’s letters, while the one who likes cool colors feels both amused yet warmed by the words. These couples typically stay together.]

okay so I’m not normally one to do {character} w plot of {disney character} or just another character in general but. but hear me out.
anastasia mako. HELP. for a little background I’m playing anya (anastasia) in my school play and my friend’s little sister is making us both watch the movie. it’s breaking my tradition of NEVER watching the movie before performing a show, so I’m just blasting the musical soundtrack on my headphones and posting this, so,,,
ANYWAYS! since I make everything about mako, let’s get going with this.
anastasia-mako parallels:
-orphan
-resemblance to royalty (specifically eyes—gold for mako, blue for anastasia)
-really funny when they get bitchy
-best friend is their little brother (alexei-bolin)
-important person who’s actually a street rat x street rat relationship dynamic (anya x dmitry, korra x mako)
-communist party/equalists!!
-keepsake item (music box/scarf)
-that’s all I’ve got but like. just listen.
zuko has two daughters; izumi and naoki. Izumi is destined for the throne and naoki doesn’t particularly want it—she’s left to her own devices, for the most part. then, naoki falling in love with an earthbender named san; they have two children, mako and bolin. mako and bolin are mixed, but current firelord zuko loves them all the same. they are raised in the palace until mako is eight and bolin is six. it’s at that point that a group of dissenters on zuko’s policies attack the palace, killing princess naoki and prince san in the castle, before abducting and likely also killing the little princes.
but a month later, the prince bolin returns! the fire nation celebrates, the beloved second branch of the royal family is not completely gone! but the halls of the palace are silent and devoid of celebration; the prince mako has not returned. and by the stone wall of silence prince bolin has made himself, it’s likely he never will.
but a month later, bolin speaks again for the first time since his parents’ death—mako is alive out there, somewhere, and they just need to find him. immediately, search efforts are employed, scouts and soldiers and notices sent out all around the world calling for help to return their prince. firelord zuko even offers a large bounty for his return, though he hates when it’s called such.
meanwhile, in republic city, a boy with no name and no memories wakes up on the side of a road. fresh snow painted the ground, blood (his blood?) soaking it red. the scarf wrapped around his neck matches in pigment. he shivers in clothing made of fine silks and meant for the warmth, trekking forward. he quickly discovers his clothes are worth enough to find something rougher for warm and cold. (he doesn’t consider for a second selling the scarf.) he doesn’t even know his own name, but the cold sinking beneath his skin tells him it’s a deal he needs to cut.
he finds odd jobs around. his first is working at a hospital. he doesn’t get payed monetarily, but they heal the nasty lightning scar that mangles him, stretching from his cheek and down his arm to his waist and feed him. the nice old lady named kya gives him odd looks now and then (she’s never met the prince mako, but she’s seen pictures. she should check. she just needs to check.) but she gives him extra clothes for free, so he doesn’t mind. he moves to washing dishes when the hospital can hire better equipped staff and his scar is healed. he needs to get actual yuan now—he wants to pay for passage to the fire nation. the scarf he clung to, a little embroidery was stitched into it; ‘together in caldera’. that’s his only clue to the eight years before, and he’s desperate to chase it.
he becomes a street sweeper after that, and uses whatever name people give him. he’s been masok and yiso and aizah and saijan and noriaki and roki and kichirō and just about every name under the sun. usually, people call him after their late family. something in that feels oddly fitting to him, but he doesn’t dwell on it. the name that sits the most in his head is masok, so it’s masok that he sticks with.
he spends his years with the triads. they all look at him the same way—a way he doesn’t see them look at the other kids who have no choice but gang work. he’s stared at like a prize. he gets invited to play a game of pretend, but he knows games with old men never end well for children, and he’s far too old for games like that by age 10.
he eventually settled in as an assistant for an office worker who rarely spares him a glance—he counts himself lucky that he’s no longer on the wrong side of the law and that he was never caught. where he is now pays well and if he keeps it up a while longer and is smart with saving, he’ll be on an airship and to caldera city in no time at all.
republic city falls into crisis, a madman calling himself amon leading the ‘equalists’ to try and destroy all benders. he only takes that as incentive to get out faster, while he still can.
and then, of course, the avatar comes crashing into his life in the most insane way possible. you would think it’d be unlikely for the avatar to encounter a paper-pusher, and you’d be right, except this particular avatar just ran over said paper-pusher with her giant ass polar bear dog which OW PLEASE GET IT OFF NOW!
she apologizes by taking him to meet her rich friend, asami, who’s helping her deal with the whole amon situation. he is decidedly not smitten immediately with either of them, especially because the avatar literally ran him over with her polar bear dog. but korra starts prodding him about the missing fire nation prince and for some reason asami (who had until then seemed reasonable) agreed. they argued that, without his scar and after growing out his scraggly close cut hair, he would look exactly like the prince. not even to mention that their timelines match up, and masok’s mystery past. he tells them they’re crazy, but the idea creeps on him, looming in the back of his head.
what if he is the prince? it does match up, there is a resemblance, and those little snippets of memory tug incessantly at his mind. a little brother, a loving grandfather, was it all really?
they teach him about the fire nation royal family. to jog his memory, they say, as he learns about bolin and zuko and izumi and naoki and san. they teach him to stand straight like a prince and not slurp his noodles and raise his chin but not look down his nose.
he follows along with their schemes, much to his chagrin, as he finds himself put on blast in amon’s threatening grip. an example is to be made of him, the world is told from a large screen. he tries not to break his composure, but something in this is familiar and his heart is beating out of his chest in an effort to understand exactly what.
amon says that mako should’ve learned his lesson years ago, when the palace was attacked, and never shown his scarred face again, much less at the avatar’s side.
mako, amon said.
and suddenly mako (yes, mako. that felt right on his tongue.) recalls bombs and screaming and burning flesh and a dead mother and father and the need to protect a little brother who was ripped away and a burning, burning, burning, and electric pain all down his side and then waking up and remembering none of it or any of what came before and he is the lost prince of the fire nation. he strikes up with fire and lightning crackles along his fingertips and he tells amon to finish him the way he finished his mother and father.
amon asks who he thinks he is, a pathetic child, to stand against the equalist forces. and mako (mako, mako, mako. that is who he always was.) proudly declares what he had not known he had a right to. he is prince mako, of the fire nation. amon will rise, or amon will die.
a stunning lightning strikes him at his side and amon does not get to choose. show us who you are, amon, an urging comes from within mako. he peels off the man’s mask. he is water tribe, a scar… painted(?) on his face. mako is on camera, he knows, but if there is something more than the identity reveal causing the panic on amon’s face, mako needs to find out.
the texture of his scar is nothing like mako’s, and he dumps water on it to be sure. the paint comes off dripping and—amon’s limbs twitch again and the water bends away from him. the leader of the equalists is a waterbender.
amon dies, as simple as that, with his brother at his side.
mako is ready to take some time to process what was revealed publicly, on national broadcast, that he hadn’t even known himself, but he can’t seem to catch a break. first korra and asami are affectionately assaulting him (oh god he’s in love with them both) and then prince bolin (bo, he always called him bo) is walking through the trap door of his attic.
mako just about falls over. why was he here? was he going to say that mako had died that night, and all his ‘memories’ were just tricks of the mind to suit his fancies? was he going to accuse mako of slandering the royal family because he looked so terribly taken care of that it was insulting to be associated with him?
none of this happened. he teared up, green eyes locking onto gold. he barrels forward, wrapping his waveringly declared brother in a hug. mako calls out a too-familiar nickname, too late to stop himself, sucking in a breath nervously.
it’s been too long, he is told. it’s time to go home. he still has the scarf, he affirms in hysterical relief.
and mako, masok, the street orphan with nothing but a brightly dyed red scarf to his name, puts on the robes of a fire nation prince with the avatar and a genius inventor at his side. he sweeps onto a balcony, falling into straight-backed composure with ease, greeting a sea of citizens.
a servant declares to his right,
“Prince Mako has returned home!”

you have unlocked a specific brand of nerd in me by posting about avatar and stranger things, and a couple weeks ago i went on a trip with my best friend and we discussed this in depth so. now i'm here to word vomit my headcanons into your asks bestie. buckle up.
el: avatar, with her native element being water. i just feel like el is a very adaptable person (for the fact that she has been forced to be that way), but also very rooted in her love for her friends and her community (which is so water tribe ok)
will (and jonathan): air simply because will gives me SUCH aang vibes but also for reasons i will discuss further down
mike (and nancy): fire. no explanation needed.
max: earth (or fire bc tbh i can see both), but i was thinking about uncle iroh's quote about the earth kingdom/earthbenders and how he describes them as "diverse and strong" and also "persistent and enduring" and idk that gives me max vibes. also okay imagine a stranger things/avatar redux where max does lose her sight BUT THEN SHE LITERALLY CAN BE LIKE TOPH DUDE.
lucas (and erica): okay truthfully, i can put lucas into a A LOT of these (literally all of them but air lol), but when i was thinking about it, i ultimately went with water, in part because no one else in the party was water. but also, again iroh's quote about the water tribes "They have a sense of community and love that holds them together through anything" is giving me lucas vibes (particularly s4 lucas)
dustin: alright, don't hate me for this one, but i think dustin is a nonbender. dustin is INCREDIBLY sokka coded, and imagining some kind of ST/avatar world? steve is also a nonbender, and these two bond over it. steve helps dustin to find his value outside of the fact that he doesn't have bending, and it really helps dustin grow his confidence. (also something something something if eddie still dies in some kind of a world, imagine how crushed dustin would be realizing if he had bending maybe he could've saved eddie. shut up andi get out of here)
robin: AIRBENDING SHE IS SO AIRBENDER CODED NIC!!!!
joyce/hopper: both nonbenders who somehow got stuck surrounded by all these chaotic benders
brenner: waterbending. okay. so so so here are my more unhinged worldbuilding thoughts about this. i think it would be so Mean and so Neat for brenner to be the same native element as el, especially if it's the element where you can literally take away someone's control of themselves through bloodbending. there are so many horrors there, and i feel like brenner represents the darker, colder, and more calculating side of waterbending (if el and lucas and even erica represents the part that is love and community). also like. imagine el hating waterbending because of how she was forced to train with brenner? but then learning to heal from her trauma through her friendships later with lucas and the others? yeah ok.
vecna/henry: SIMILAR TO THE BRENNER/EL PARALLEL. i think it'd be so fun to have henry be an airbender (to have will/henry parallels), but also henry strikes me as a very zaheer coded character (idk if you've watched legend of korra, but the idea of chaos being the world's natural state and seeking freedom through chaos and disorder reminds me a lot of henry's monologue in S4E7). also like. the mindflayer particle manipulation could so very easily be like? an airbending trait? will, an airbender, gets hurt through some advanced form of airbending as a child and it traumatizes the hell out of him? but then he's able to reclaim his bending and use it to help defeat henry in the end? yeah yeah yeah do you see the vision?
other final thoughts in this huge ass ask that you didn't ask for but i sent anyways
lonnie is an airbender, and he's a shitty human being who is awful to jonathan (and will but less so since jonathan protects him) when teaching him how to bend. jonathan, because of this, hates bending and prefers to fight with other weapons when he has to, but robin and jonathan become friends eventually, and she helps him to reclaim this part of who he is. (please imagine robin, jonathan, will, and el all airgliding. thank you and goodnight.)
nancy is absolutely a prodigy when it comes to firebending, but mike is just kinda mediocre, which then feeds into his insecurities about literally dating the avatar and also being the party leader, because why should he get to lead if he's not even that good at bending? very azula/zuko coded wheeler relationship there except nancy doesn't wanna. ya know. kill mike and stuff.
i'm so sorry this was so long, like i said you unlocked a specific brand of nerd in me tonight LOL
yay! i love unlocking things! (btw i have to say your shoulder is really comfortable, maybe i'll stay here for a bit longer to be your personal demon who knows?)
okay yes YES! avatar el with her original bending being water makes so much sense based on her personality like you said and the great parallel between waterbending and how canon el uses baths to connect with the void and amplify her powers, so water is already greatly tied to her at least symbolically as her tool but ALSO as method used to torture her (i mean all the times she was put into sensory deprivation against her will), which ALSO TIES SO NICELY TO YOUR TAKE ON BRENNER ALSO BEING A WATERBENDER BC HE USES WATER TO CONTROL EL AND HE WOULD TOTALLY BE THE CORRUPTED KIND THAT USES BLOODBENDING ANDI YOUR BRAIN IS SO HUGE!! and el learning to find peace with her bending through her friendship with lucas is just so :((( also picture lucas teaching something brenner never taught el, how to user her bending to heal others and like that she learns that waterbending by itself isn't bad or good, it's how you yield your power that turns you bad or good same as how it happens with her powers in canon where they don't make her a monster just because she has them, it's how she uses that will define that and el has never been a monster, that is brenner. UGH I LOVE WATERBENDING EL IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE ANDI IM LOSING MY MIND!!!
"mike and nancy: fire. no explanation needed" LMAO yes those siblings can only be firebenders
i loooove firebender max so much, it also brings the possibilities that @bottomlessabyssposts mentioned how max mastered lighting first than mike and she kept zapping him until he had enough and had to teach himself how to master it as well though he would fail miserably because he is not gifted like you said, he is pretty mediocre in contrast with nancy who is powerful by nature. so max taking pity on mike and teaching him and also madwheeler being the same bending makes so much sense to me i adore the idea BUT ALSO YOU ARE RIGHT MAX EARTHBENDING MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BASED ON UNCLE IROH'S DESCRIPTION?? and yes i NEED HER TO BE LIKE TOPH BC SHE HAS THE SAME ENERGY LMAO and with earthbending she would learn to see through her feet and powers and UGH I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. also she would be a skilled metalbender because one day just like toph she was captured in a metal confinement and she lost her shit so while trying to scape by punching the cage she realized oh shit something is happening oh shit i can bend metal? neat.
me, with lucas: well he uses a slingshot to throw rocks so earthbending
meanwhile, andi with lucas: based on the deep meaning of the waterbenders and their sense of community and-
i am a buffoon, putting my buffoon hat on right now. that being said, lucas being what keeps the party together through his sense of community aligns so well with lucas. thinking about lucas always owning up to his mistakes, how he apologized to el in season one and said he had judged her wrong, how in season two he gave max a safe space to open up and when she needed reassurance he was right there to offer it, how in season three even when will says it doesn't matter anymore he still admits he was wrong and apologizes and how he is a supportive best friend to mike and his shenanigans, and in season four how lucas literally tricks the basketball team and runs back to the party to be with them and slowly becomes the anchor max needed so badly and I'LL CRY LUCAS I ADORE YOU SO MUCH HELP-
okay okay dustin for me could be an airbender because of his free spirit and how easily he adapts to new situations and new people like in s2 and then s3. but also him being a not bender makes so much sense? thinking how canon dustin is basically a mastermind and a crafter that can put together a long range radio while being on summer camp. so imagine that, yes, dustin isn't a bender and in a world of benders that's kinda a big deal and he could be self conscious about it but what if makes up for it with his trinkets and projects? he is no airbender but he crafted a set of wings with a string system that can be adjusted to the winds and keep him in the air just fine. he's no firebender, but he designed a flamethrower just fine. dustin being the crafter of the party makes my heart go woosh woosh because it's SO HIM (also dipping my feet into a different fandom/au but thinking how dustin and leo valdez are so similar in that sense and how dustin would totally be hephaestus' son OK GOING BACK TO OUR AVATAR PROGRAMMING!) AND YES steve also being a nonbender who is still so self confidence and he teaches dustin to be confident in his skills bc even when dustin is an amazing inventor he still feels like his lack of bending is still something he needs to fix so his inventions are to cover that insecurity but steve is like "no, dude! you are literally a tiny inventor, that's so cool? fuck bending, that's a gift some get and some who don't. but this? *holding up one of dustin's inventions* this was all you! no gift, just you and your mind. how is that not awesome?" and them bonding because it's a parallel of steve helping dustin be more confident in canon and i will cry no andi nooooo-
ROBIN AIRBENDER TRUTHER RIGHT HERE TOO SHE SIMPLY IS NOTHING TO ADD HERE just picture her annoying steve floating around upside down in a crossed leg position, hovering around him in circles while he tries to recover from the last girl that turned him down, but robin is there in his face, shaming gravity and going "dingus adds another point to the 'you suck' category'" LMAOOOO do you see this vision andi? *extends hands in alladin's 'do you trust me?' fashion*
LMAO HOPPER AND JOYCE BEING NONBENDERS IS SO-
hop: uh, honeyyyyy!
joyce: *from the other side of the house* yeah?
hop: some little shit named mike burned the wall again
(context of this: will flirted too shamelessly with mike and his face went poof! into a burning blush that also reflected on his hands producing fire without him noticing)
about henry, i watched korra until like half of book three or two? the one where the nonbenders learn how to shut down bender's powers but honestly i don't remember much. BUT through a quick google search i can say that YES TF? that zaheer dude alings with henry's ideology *shudders* I SEE THE VISION SO WELL! henry using a forbidden technique of airbending to hurt will and corrupt his bending and will learning how to bend again over the years, also just like brenner and el, henry representing the dark side of airbending and will the good side that goes back to the old airbenders and their ways to connect with their bending AND IT ALSO ADDS TO THE WHOLE bending isn't evil or good, it's just power that you decide how to use and yield AAAHH I LOVE THE VISION I LOVE YOUR BRAIN KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS!!!
NOOOO jonathan hating bending and creating weapons instead because lonnie always taught him bending was about controlling others and using their bending to that purpose but jonathan doesn't want to control others, he wants to be IN control and he can control the weapons he designs and builds (OMG HE WOULD ALSO BOND WITH DUSTIN LIKE THIS AND IT WOULD ALSO SHOW DUSTIN THAT THERE'S A NOT SO COOL/DARKER SIDE OF BENDING AND JONATHAN WOULD TELL HIM HOW DUSTIN IMAGINATION AND CLEVERNESS TO BUILD ALL HIS INVENTIONS IS WORTH SO MUCH MORE THAN BENDING AND AAAHHH), jonathan can be the creator of those weapons that end up to being at his mercy, instead of him being at his bending mercy by how lonnie taught him how to bend. but yes omg jonathan bonding with steve (stonathan my beloved, even if platonic i need more of those two PLEASE) and with robin who teaches him the fun side of airbending and the good side, the side that doesn't feel like a power that pretends to control others and control jonathan but instead a friend that always has your back. TEARS! will would also learn so much from robin (and not only about airbending ehem ehem wink wink you get me)
AND OH GOD THIS IS SO LONG ALREADY IM SORRY BUT TO TACKLE THAT LAST PART YES!!! nancy being a natural, powerful and a prodigy. something something this reflects how in canon nancy played the part of the perfect child lifting karen and ted's expectations on mike who then never met them because he is not nancy so by season two mike is punished for not dealing with his trauma the same way nancy has (or pretends she has to keep up this perfect child image to her parents), meaning quietly unlike mike who instead acts out and does things that clearly are a cry for help that karen and ted never attend to OK SORRY HAD TO SNEAK IN A BIT OF MY MIKE WHEELER ANALYSIS IN THERE BC ITS MY NATURE GOING BACK TO WHAT I WAS SAYING- nancy is a prodigy, mike isn't, he is mediocre at best, he has a hard time controlling his bending and being as powerful as nancy even though he is expected to and this transpires into his deeply rooted insecurity that then intensifies when he starts dating the avatar that was missing from the face of the earth and that mike one day stumbled upon because of dumb luck only, and also how he is the leader of the party but why? he isn't as powerful as the rest, he isn't the avatar or at the avatar's level, he is just mike and in good mike fashion he can't see his worth, so then will comes and lets mike know that yes, he is just mike and just mike is what keeps the party together, his leadership and heart because mike doesn't need to be anything besides just mike, because that's enough. AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH SCREAMING FOREVER!!!
you are sorry your ask was long? no no no, look what you did to me. i went full nerd mode on you and you are to blame, i need to say hey, it's all you in your head, you are the one who burned us down but it's not what you meant-
ok enough with the taylor swift random reference this is long enough already i need to stop typing NIC STOP TYPING RIGHT NOW
okay okay bye bye

I love Symbolism, so i always tag Pierre as waterbender, yknow element of change etc, and Charles as firebender
ough...YES....i hear you completely. fire/water...the Symbolism....the Meaning....yeag
actually i was just being unhinged with @duquesademiel last night about a variant on the a:tla narrative where charles is the avatar in their firebending form this reincarnation, and when he emerges from his hundred year slumber the fire nation is Delighted but the army wants to use him as the poster child for their war. and charles has always been a pacifist, so this idea is horrible to him, so he runs away to the furthest point he can think of: the northern water tribe, where he meets a kind, fierce, passionate waterbender who agrees to hide him...and eventually help him in his quest to end the war....and if he falls in love with those intense blue eyes and wolfish smile on the way, well....
but also i have a post-series idea about earthbender pierre and his firebender best friend....pierre with toph-like abilities and a specialty in metal bending, which he uses for work as a blacksmith....charles is trying to avoid being enlisted in the fire nation's reformed army even though he's a natural fighter....he helps pierre at work and they spar/play fight all the time to teach each other their specific footwork....
honestly i feel like an argument could be made for pierre being of any bending type but charles absolutely must be fire i will not budge

this is less a ship and more an interesting juxtaposition, but i’d be interested to hear your thoughts on toph x ty lee as a dynamic
i have a longer post in the works about how every character in the gaang mirrors every character in the fire nation squad so i won't go too in-depth here since i do intend on finishing that post. at some point. but the toph/ty lee parallels are really interesting to me because i feel like people really overlook both of their characters in quite similar ways.
obviously they both ran away from home because they felt repressed and misunderstood within their respective familial dynamics and wanted to distinguish themselves as an autonomous individuals. and they both pioneer these really radical forms (toph's earthbending style in general, but also metalbending in particular, vs chi-blocking) as incredibly innovative and somewhat terrifying martial artists. they're also both great at performing, not just in the literal sense that toph is a pro-wrestler and ty lee is a circus acrobat, but also in the sense that they can easily don masks to appease and conform within their rigid social orders, although we see toph perform far less specifically because her inciting incident is to escape to that high society world and its expectations, whereas ty lee's inciting incident is to enter it. people forget that toph is also adept at donning masks because she has the freedom to be blunt and crass and agentic, whereas ty lee very much does not. and also they're both just incredibly brilliant and clever and creative and really good at adapting to their environments (think of ty lee's social savvy vs the conditions in which toph first metalbends), but because they present in a certain way (or don't present in a certain way, i should say), their incredible intellectual and creative capacities often go unnoticed. like, i normally see people cite sokka or azula as being the smartest characters in atla, and while i don't deny their intelligence, i think toph and ty lee should, at the very least, be ranked up there with them. ty lee is more manipulative than azula and toph is funnier than sokka, for example.
so i think as a friendship they'd just really appreciate each other as two people who do not take freedom for granted and are constantly innovating and adapting and finding bold new ways to move through the world. toph is also a lot like mai, generally, so i think ty lee would really enjoy her presence because she would appreciate a no-bullshit, blunt approach to conversation, despite of course being the master of subtlety and coded language. but toph can also operate within that mode, also having grown up in high society, and merely decides to eschew it after years of resenting the fakeness and bullshit of her aristocratic world. so yeah, they'd get along i think.

Been thinking about this a lot and decided to share:
One of my favorite things to do to help inspire my writing is thinking about different things about my OTP. The thing I’ve been thinking about lately is where Korvira would live. For this specific post I’ll just be focusing on a canon version instead of an AU. I might revisit this again for my fav AU’s later.
In a canon version, I can see them not living together for a while. Mostly because of Kuvira’s prison sentence, but also because they both mutually agreed to keep their relationship a secret for as long as they could. They’re both private people and they just want to enjoy their lives together in peace. But they also understand that eventually they’ll have to go public.
But after Kuvira gets house arrest, I can see them moving in together. The only problem is finding a location to live. Zhu Li politely informs Kuvira that she isn’t welcome in Republic City unless it’s for official reasons, and neither of them really want to live in Zaofu. They briefly considered living in the Southern Water Tribe, but decided that it was a little too far. Korra wants to stay close to the Earth Kingdom and the United Republic. Plus Kuvira hates the cold.
Eventually they find a nice little valley a few miles away from Zaofu where they decide to build their home. While they both love city life, they also enjoy the privacy and quiet that country living offered. Building the house took a little longer than they expected, even with Baatar Sr’s architectural advice, yet the wait was worth it.
It’s not a huge home, though they did make sure the doorways were big enough for Naga and Daichi. They decorated the interior together, finding a balance between their mutual tastes in style. Korra’s style is more rustic and comfortable. She likes collecting Water Tribe artifacts and artwork to put on display. Kuvira’s style is modern and minimalist. Like Korra, Kuvira likes to collect things; mostly books and random pieces of technology. Her favorite is old cameras, and rare first-draft books.
Their home has a huge yard with a training area in the back. They have a large garden as well, which is mainly looked after by Kuvira. The garden is mostly made up of produce, but Kuvira has a lot of flowers as well. Gardening helps her to deal with her anger and is surprisingly meditative, it’s also good earthbending practice. Korra built a small gazebo to meditate in which she uses as often as she her schedule allows. One of their favorite pastimes is sitting on the porch swing together, watching the sun rise and set.

Any predictions about what they're going to do with Toph in the live action Avatar? I actually kind of like the changes they made like making Sokka no longer sexist. The story feels more real, honestly, I think Toph is a bit of an overdone character. Like she's super strong because she's blind, that's not good writing. I hope they make her better.
Ironically, I got the notification about this ask while I was talking about this very subject with my partner lol.
I'm only a few episodes into the live action Avatar so far, so take what I say with a grain of salt i guess, but I'm honestly a bit concerned. While I'm glad you enjoyed it (and legitimatly no hate on anyone who does), I'm finding so far that the creators of this version have attempted to "fix" a lot of things that either didnt need fixing, or they didn't really understand why they were issues, so they have ended up "fixing" the wrong things in a lot of cases. I worry this will be the case with toph eventually, too.
I'm planning to talk more about og toph soon (I'm working on the draft for the post atm) but basically, I agree, I absolutely love og toph, but she does have issues that its important to acknowledge. Its worth keeping in mind though the context of when the og show aired. the fact that she's a good bender specifically because she's blind/a bit over the top is, in my opinion, an overcorrection from the kinds of disability rep common in fantasy (and other genres but especially fantasy) at the time: chatacters that were mostly just sad or helpless who were left out of the action and/or used to show how sad a world is.
If they were to make changes to toph, it's important to recognise that this isn't really the case anymore, and what made toph work back then might not work as well now. Now characters like toph are so common it has become a trope in and of itself (the supercrip trope, to be specific, something ive already talked about before). to move away from that, they need to do a better job of recognising her blindness as a disability outside of her bending and maybe not necessarily toning her down, but adding layers to how her blindness effects her daily life and lean into the idea of her earthbending being used as a kind of disability aid rather than a cure for it.
The problem is, I don't think they will. I think they'll either add some (unnecessary) sad undertones to her character and backstory to match the "darker tone" they seem to be going for, or they'll lean into the supercrip aspects of her character even more that the og did and kind of forget she's blind at all.
It's a pessimistic take, and like I said, I haven't finished the series yet, so my thoughts might change, but from what I've seen so far, my hopes aren't super high.

I need MOAR BnHa/Inazuma Eleven ideas/headcanons!!!!!!! :3
That moment when you're like "ask me for more!" And then some asks you for more and you're like uhhhh...
Here's some more/expansions about what I said earlier:
•Aki is quirkless, she'd be too powerful with a quirk, and because of Japan's stupid laws he can't play quirked soccer and has to settle being a manager. She'd kick the boys asses any day of the week.
•Taichimukai has a copy quirk that works through some sort of visual processing (see it then be it, lol). If he sees something and understands the basic concept behind it, he can replicate it perfectly (he can only replicate one quirk at a time, but any other skill he can do whenever). Also, if he uses it often enough he can build upon the thing he's copying in his own way (like copying someone cooking so much that he gains some intuition about what tastes good, so he makes his own recipies). He uses God hand often enough that he evolves it differently from endou. (His parents had a hard time in his ninja phase)
•Kageno Jin has an invisibility quirk that turns off whenever people are actively looking at him. It honestly just bends light around him
•Otonashi has an information processing quirk like her brother, but hers works more towards compiling data and computers while Kidous is more creating tactics
•Kabeyama can earthbend
•Rococos quirk, I'm still trying to figure out. When I'm thinking about their quirks, I'm also looking at a charcters role in the show and how they use their skills. I'm still trying to figure out a way for Rococo to copy daisuke that makes sense as a quirk and also makes sense in the events of the show. I want the universes to fit together, not change important plot points.
If there's a specific charcter you want, ask and ill put my 2 cents in (please keep in mind that I'm still in the process of watching GO, and I haven't finished Orion yet because of how stupid it is)
(Here's the original post if you need it)
