i know its partly the nature of critical role as a whole changing for this third campaign, but its SO funny to me that "Dont Trust Anyone Not Even Yourself" Paranoid Chucklefucks The Mighty Nein were showered in kind and helpful guest PC's and ended up So Good at the Magic Of Friendship (threatening). While Bell's Hells of "time for therapy!!!!" "do you think they'll be our friend" "what the fuck is up with that game time!!" have wound up with a like. 40% hit rate for villains in their close friends. like this is a MASSIVE oversimplification and it makes sense but its mostly very funny to me. rip to early campaign m9 you would have loved all of your paranoid instincts constantly paying off in the worst way

Campaign 3 Episode 63: A Haunted Past

Oh my god, the parallels that we are walking into the Bells Hells reunion with.

Team Wildemount went shopping. They formed close bonds to each other. They saved an ancient mystical creature and an entire city with the power of friendship and kindness and mercy. They all survived. They’re all committed to seeing this fight through. The people of this group who started a threesome and a robomance have no middle ground in that venn diagram. They are a literal pyramid built out of love and trust.

Team Issylra clothed themselves in the remains of a betrayal. They destroyed a temple of the gods. They saved a town through death and violence. No two people walked out of that fight feeling the same about its outcome. They had stressful debates questioning what could possibly be worth all this, nightly. They had an enemy in their midst the entire time. They’re returning to their family with one temporary companion.

We’re looking at a group who’s spent their entire time getting to know a living miracle of the Dawnfather, learning about Ludinus’ connection to the Matron of Ravens, the long list of horrors he’s committed. All who are about to reconvene with the people who helped tear down a temple of the Dawnfather, who killed his followers, who watched one of his angels turn to dust, who are returning with a believer of the Matron.

One group will be bubbly, and clean, and hopeful. And the other will arrive looking worse than they did at the end of the world. Dirty, and clouded, and sad.

Both of them have come to the conclusion that this is war. They’ve resolved to do anything to return to their people and keep it that way. To finish what they started. But the paths they went down to get here are on two wildly differing ends of the spectrum. Ethics and principles that will no doubt clash many times the further down this road they go.

actually orym standing aside and saying nothing with that empty, distraught expression hurts SO much because he’s always been the voice of reason, always been trying to stay on the righteous path and then the quiet nod to laudna...orym’s re-drawing lines and nothing is ever going to be the same

let me see if I have this right. bor’dor experienced life-altering trauma. he signed up with a cult leader to hurt whoever he could however he could in order to take down the gods because he felt personally betrayed. orym experienced life-altering trauma. he Did Not sign up with a cult leader. he did not intend to hurt whoever he could however he could. he continued to protect his people. he has consistently refused to hurt or kill, subduing enemies instead of eradicating them, and asking the rest of the hells to follow suit whenever possible. he has taken the deaths at their own hands hard and seriously. he has, as of yet, not taken now multiple betrayals personally. but bor’dor is to be pitied and excused while orym is to be dismissed and deemed somehow both a “boring, moral boy scout who needs to stop bitching” about *checks notes* his dead husband and a “cold, selfish, single-minded man becoming a murderer full of bloodlust!!!!!!!” ok. you can *kiri voice* go fuck yourself!
