Scenes that turned average Marvel movies into masterpieces
3. Sam Wilson receiving the shield and being reveal to be the next Captain America
Tumblr media
2. T’Challa getting ready to kill Zemo to avenge his father, but then changing his mind after hearing Zemo’s story and even keeping him from killing himself so he could face the consequences of his actions.
Tumblr media
1. Stephen “it’s the only way” Strange figuring out that there might actually be another way and telling America to trust herself and her power, only for America to defeat Wanda in the most powerful way, by giving her what she always wanted and showing her how harmful he actions had been.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t happen in all MCU movies, but sometimes we get a scene that is so great that it takes the movie to a whole other level. Marvel movies are usually mainstream movies, with a light plot, some actions scenes, some humor, and are manufactured in order to be liked by the largest audience. I think a lot of people get disappointed because they have expectations that are too high, when these movies are made to attract everyone even the casual watcher.
But there are scenes like these that change the tone of the movie, give depth and give a little something that makes the movie great in the end.
When I think about Avengers: Endgame, I don’t remember the messy plot, or the confusing timeline, I remember how the last scene was a pivotal moment for the MCU. I remember all the emotions I felt when I first saw Sam Wilson holding the shield.
When I think about Captain America:Civil War, I don’t remember the fights or the whole debate around the accords. I remember one of the most powerful and emotional scenes in the MCU, where T’Challa lets go of his desire of revenge because he saw what being consumed by vengeance could do to a man, when hearing Zemo talk about how he lost his father, his wife and his son in Sokovia.
And when I’ll think about Doctor Strange, I won’t remember a cute movie about a sorcerer adopting a teenager with superpowers and doing everything he can to protect her fro a Carrie/The Ring Crossover witch. I’ll remember America discovering her own strength and using it to defeat Wanda in the smartest way ever. That scene had everything, it had drama, plot twist, feelings, emotions, it was to perfect way to end the movie and it made me feel all kind of things.

i keep thinking about rocket’s “there ain’t no thing like me ‘cept me” and how it’s presented initially as an indicator of who he is—his mouthiness, his independence, his absolute lack of knowledge of what a raccoon looks like—and like. it is those things! it is! but it’s also — yeah, so, the first time we hear it, there’s a hint of story behind it, like: who or what made rocket this?
and now we know it’s the high evolutionary, and now we know the other layer to that statement: yeah, rocket’s confident when he says there’s no thing like him, because a) they were all individual experiments for the same cause but b) because rocket, and therefore the ones ‘like’ him, were classified as defective, and he knows the high evolutionary killed them all

Things that happened because of the Sokovia Accords being repealed:
Steve and Tony are watching from above and are obviously both very happy about it, but are they going to express that? Obviously not.
Considering the Avengers have been spread out all over the world and are now only acting in small groups or are forming their own teams, there’s no real way to keep a rein on them anyway
So the only people have, ah, strong feelings about it are Sam, Bucky, Rhodey, Sharon, Maria, Wanda, Okoye, Clint, Scott, and Zemo
Which is still a long list but you get my point
But like. This means that Wanda, Sam, Bucky, Clint, and Scott are no longer government fugitives
This means that superheroes like Daredevil and Spider-Man don’t have to reveal their identities unless they choose to.
This means that Wanda, Thor and the Asgardians, Bruce, Jen, Bucky, and Carol are safe from being experimented on by the government
And most importantly, that means that organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D, the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, or literally any superhero/enhanced group of people can once again operate across sovereign borders if they so choose. Which also means that saving the world and dealing with the consequences is entirely up to them.
Also I can guarantee that Bucky and Sam and Scott and Clint all had a party to celebrate this news

Image description (CONTAINS MCU SPOILERS): a line graph titled “Steve Rogers’ Character Arc” featuring a blue grid with red points and lines
The bottom is labelled with all of the MCU movies Steve is featured in from Captain America the First Avenger through Avengers End Game.
The graph points are a slow, steady climb with several small (or large) character development dips. Starting about 1/3 of the way up with the beginning of CAtFA, a large jump (serum) and dip (Bucky falling), and a slight bump for the end. Avengers 1 through the beginning of Captain America the Winter Soldier is a steady rise with a large dip when he discovers HYDRA/Bucky. Avengers Age of Ultron is another steady rise while Captain America Civil War has a dip for all the infighting. Avengers Infinity War is peak character development, he is fighting for the protection of his friends and the universe and looking great and happy to see his bff doing well. Then the snap and a BIG crash for the beginning of Avengers End Game, followed by a the highest spike when he wields mjolnir then a COMPLETE DROP OFF THE CHART WHEN HE ABANDONS ALL HIS FRIENDS AND THE WORLD TO GO BACK TO THE 50s TO BE WITH A WOAN WHO’S LAST WORDS TO HIN WERE “START OVER”.

Somewhat Spoilers for Quantumania
Okay, I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I feel like yes the father-daughter relationship did make me cry but I would’ve cried harder if they kept the same actress from Endgame to play Cassie or if they made a couple tweaks.
I love Katheryn Newton, she’s a fantastic rising actress, but there wasn’t a relationship built between Scott and Cassie while she was Cassie. The emotional weight is relying on connecting Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann as Cassie to Newton and I can’t make that connection. If they kept Fuhrmann on, at least we’d be able to make that visual connection, but I still don’t think it would’ve been enough.
If they at least fluffed up the beginning of the movie with father-daughter scenes in the montage where it shows Scott is making an effort with Cassie in the midst of his new found fame, it would’ve made the emotional stakes hit harder and better.
We know Scott would do anything for Cassie, so show that he’s already trying and succeeding on work life balance while Cassie hid working on the transmitter.
Or do the opposite.
Show that Cassie is completely withdrawn from him because he isn’t giving her any attention after being gone for five years. I think that’s what they were trying to do but they didn’t lean into it enough. Let it be a part of the montage and a normal occurrence of picking Cassie up from jail. Have her be angry with her dad for not being around and turning his back on the little guy cause he hasn’t been out to save the day lately. Not just a passive aggressive comment that she immediately bites back on.

Secret Invasion Ep. 4 Spoilers
As a Rhodey stan... i have a couple words and no words at the same time.
I think a lot of people online and in online MCU communities were mystified by the idea of someone [and that someone being Rhodey] being a Skrull that they failed to consider the implications of such a decision? and that generalization is itself one i'm not too confident in making but i find it to be the case nonetheless.
still, with so many communities talking about it... the actual reveal just felt so lackluster. Rhodey is a character, however you may see him, that has already shown so much heart, love, care, soul, realness, and groundedness that in revealing that he's a Skrull just doesn't... do the phase 1-3 versions of him justice at all.
And while I could go on a million rants about why I hate this decision (most of which involving my relationship with the phase 1-3 version of him that is being disregarded for the sake of moving phase 5 forward...), the main thing i wanted to rant about right here is the when.
When did Rhodey become a skrull?
I fear that neither of the two theories I have in mind means anything good for the Rhodey fans that value his relationship with Tony.
He's been a Skrull since Iron Man 3 (or somewhere around that time give or take a few years). (This one i'm not sure they would actually follow through with just because as much as the MCU says they're forward-thinking, some of their decisions lead me to believe the contrary.) This is rooted in the use of extremis, a project that was experiencing issues in the film and Tony figured out how to stabilize for the sake of saving Pepper Potts's life. While SHIELD would have had this technological information as a result, there is a strong possibility that the events of Iron Man 2 may have convinced some people that Rhodey would be willing to even give up that information which was personal to Tony for a greater gain (or even something not in his control if he were coerced into such an action).
He, as a very popular theory suggests (one that i also take issue with), became a Skrull following the events of Captain America: Civil War. In this film, he was critically injured during the battle in the Leipzig-Halle Airport where Vision shot a blast through the War Machine suit, leaving Rhodey paralyzed from the waist down. My personal issue with this theory is that I've always had an issue with the way Rhodey's tone toward the Sokovia Accords shifted between CA:CW and Avengers: Infinity War (where initially expressed full support for them in CA:CW but was then extremely lax [admittedly the circumstances were what they were] during IW). However, logistically speaking, when could there have been a better time for a Skrull to take on his likeness? After Thanos' snap? After Tony's snap? Before Falcon and the Winter Soldier? It seems like the most seamless transition had to have occurred during the time that Rhodey was seriously injured in CA:CW.
All of this is merely speculation. However, one of the biggest plotholes of the entire Secret Invasion series so far has been the lack of clarity on when these prominent figures became Skrulls. Hopefully, I'm wrong with all of this. Still, this won't change the impact of the one character from the earlier phases of the MCU that actually recalls the events of IM1,2,3, A1,2 CACW, etc. being a Skrull. It won't take back the pain that comes with the knowledge that to some degree or another, the face of a close friend of Tony Stark was involved in such heinous acts (almost directly paralleling the relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes in the mcu as well) and I fear the implications for the upcoming Armor Wars film won't be kind for the version of Rhodey that will awaken in a world where everything has changed.

last night I dreamed that my littlest brother and I were with Steve Rogers on the edge of this giant fir forest (I've never been) and it was foggy (think photography aesthetic pictures) and my brother had a puppy on his lap and Steve was explaining we had to test the frequency (i think he meant audibility) so we clapped and the puppy heard us so he nodded and said now we just had to wait (for Bucky????) So the "camera" (my brain) pans through the forest (there's a power line going through it somewhere near the end) to Bucky from an art piece i saw of cacw with groceries in his hand looking v confused
Haha I love getting fandom dreams!!
Because of my medication I get the weirdest dreams. Sometimes I get fandom dreams, but other times they're adventure games or Horrors.
Just last night I had a dream about the new Spiderverse movie. I haven't watched it yet, so no spoilers please! But my brain made up a plot about this girl named Maria Morales. And my dream followed all the difficult parts of her life (I can't remember them much now), until she donned the Spider-Man suit at the very end of the movie.
I didn't even realise it was a Spiderverse movie till then because it was actually just setting up the backstory for Maria, a new character in the next Spiderverse movie, and Miles Morales didn't even appear in her timeline until an end-credit scene.

Can We Bring Yesterday Back Around? (ao3) - glitterfics clint/steve E, 39k
Summary: When he got back from New Mexico, Clint was given the incredibly boring task of watching the newly defrosted Captain America adjust to modern life. He didn't expect it to lead to a misunderstanding, an impromptu make-out session and a blown mission. But that's alright because he was unlikely to run into Steve Rogers again. Right?
catching bullets in our teeth - anothercover clint/natasha M, 77k
Summary: Retirement, it turns out, is not a thing that Clint is adjusting to very well. Or, you know, at all. It didn’t occur to him that when he dropped the team, it would mean he’d lose Natasha, too.

Draining Life (ao3) - LagLemon steve/tony E, 120k
Summary: After a bad break up with Pepper, Tony packed his things and moved into Stark mansion. He refurbished the mansion so that it was more his style and less of his father's, readying himself for a new life as he tried to recover from the surgery that had removed his arc reactor. He didn't like being alone, but at least when he was in the mansion, he didn't have to see everyone pitying him. Besides, here he could work on Extremis without anyone staring over his shoulder.
It would be perfect soon.
Things would be better with Extremis.
After the move in, Tony starts having strange dreams - ones that start getting more and more disturbing as the nights go by.
He dreams that there is something buried outside in his yard, hiding beneath the patch of petunias, and it won't leave him alone.
every inch, every scar (ao3) - ChangeTheCircumstances maggie/jim M, 52k

Complications of course arise as Scott soon learns what his new connections mean for him and even those he loves.
Falling Into You (ao3) - sabrecmc steve/tony M, 53k

i’m headed for a land that’s far away (ao3) - telm_393 scott/sam M, 44k
Summary: As a fugitive in Wakanda, Scott makes a place for himself as moral support, doing everything possible to keep the fact that he’s pretty much dead inside from the others. See, he’s been living with his mental issues for years, and he’s been pretending to be just fine for even longer, so if he lets himself get lost in everyone else’s commotion, he’ll be okay.
…Except no one can pretend to be okay forever, and Scott is rudely thrust into the spotlight by virtue of having a full-on mental breakdown and trying to kill himself while living in close quarters with five other people. It doesn’t work, so Scott decides to save his own life and face his past, present, and future head-on. Also, somewhere in all of this, Scott and Sam fall in love, because wars end, but life goes on.

Tony is sent back in time from mid-Infinity War to just after returning from Afghanistan.
How different is Tony Stark, and the MCU, with all that knowledge of the future?
Haunted by the guilt of Rhodey’s injury, the betrayal and pain of Steve, the fear of Wanda, the loss of Jarvis, and the foreknowledge of Thanos, this Tony is one the universe hasn’t contended with before. And he is more than ready to re-claim his title of genius, billionaire, and philanthropist in ways unexpected.
Revenant (ao3).- stele3 steve/bucky M, 73k

second time around (ao3) - BeneficialAddiction clint/phil T, 74k
Summary: Upon learning that Phil Coulson is still alive, something breaks in Clint, maybe permanently. Leaving behind his team, his home, and his identity as Hawkeye, he falls back on an old name, living separately from the Avengers until SHIELD demands they begin looking for someone to take the missing archer’s place and their sights turn to the rogue assassin Ronin.
What are the chances of being recruited by a shady government division of superheroes twice?
sequestered (ao3) - ElloPoppet bucky/clint M, 37k

Triple Espresso (ao3) - FestiveFerret steve/bucky/tony E, 72k
Summary: Everything is going great for Steve. He loves his boyfriend, his apartment, his pets. He finally has some opportunities to share his artwork, the coffee shop he manages is doing well, and Bucky is about to finish his exams, which means no more night shifts. It finally feels like life is on track.
And then Tony Stark walks into the cafe and everything goes off the rails.
We're Living Like We're Gods (ao3) - eden22 sam/bucky E, 60k
Summary: Sam wasn't sure what he'd expected when he'd signed on to join Steve in hunting down the Winter Soldier. After over a year with no sign of the other man, he was beginning to think they'd never find him, especially once Steve gets pulled back into Avengers business.
Sam was right. He doesn't find Barnes.
Barnes finds him.
Z to A (ao3) - memoriaeterna wanda/vision, pepper/tony T, 88k
Summary: The moment of disorientation was nothing compared to the next thing he saw. He was standing in the midst of an airport, looking directly at a girl with the familiar red leather coat. The mutual recognition was instant. Leipzig. Or, Peter and Wanda sent back in time to stop the inevitable. Good news: they are not alone. Bad news: who and from when.

What If Season 2-Spoilers
I finally got around to watching What If Season 2. Late to the party for a couple of reasons. One being I didn't care much for the first season and I heard it was Peggy Carter heavy...and while I don't 'hate' her, she's just not one of my favorites. I don't care for Hayley Atwell all that much either, no reason, no hate, but for some reason she puts me off so the whole Steggy ship just didn't jell for me.
Season 2 was a lot better, but it WAS Peggy Carter heavy. Meh. Scot and Bucky had some fun verbal sparring in the Robin Hood episode. :)
So I watched it and I could not believe what they did in Episode 5. FOR YEARS Stucky shippers have maintained that had either Bucky or Steve had been a woman, their relationship would be a clear cut romance. People scoffed, people laughed and here the writers just...did it. If nothing else, it gives legitimacy to the claim. Yes, if either one of those characters had been a woman, the whole CATWS and CACW storyline would have been a romance.
On the bright side, apparently it's canon that Steve and Bucky love and save each other in every universe so in at least one of those universes, Stucky is a thing. We live in that universe. :)
Where the hell was Sam Wilson? I did see that he's supposed to be in Season 3, so there's that, but I missed him.

SECRET INVASION
S1E5 — Home
.
.
SPOILERS!
Priscilla comes home to dead men in her hallway and receives a call from Fury. For obvious reasons he’s not telling her where he’s going.
Fury arrives at base camp
Not!Rhodey visits the President. The admiral has notes, but not!Rhodey shoots those down. Not!Rhodey tells the President, “It’s the Russians, 100%.” Which is part of Gravik’s plan, and also not true.
Fury enters the Skrull HQ, coughing from the radiation. Sonya calls not!Rhodey.
Gravik walks circles around Fury, taunting him. Telling him about how Gravik was a former fan of Fury who looked up to the older guy, but was disillusioned and went rogue because of inaction and empty promises.
Gravik is enraged, rightfully enraged by Fury’s promise of a better life unfulfilled. Gravik says, “The species you spent your entire adult life defending, they were condemned to die the day I realized you weren’t a man of your word.” Basically, he means, why should the Skrulls live a bad life, when he could just make it quick and easy for them, to end their suffering as fast as possible? Imagine personally feeling like your hero has failed you. Everything you’ve looked up to for YEARS, down the drain.
Fury has thought that getting dusted was dying. That’s what it felt like for him.
Gravik takes the vial of the Harvest from Fury.
Scene cuts back to the hospital; not!Rhodes is getting the President out somewhere.
Gravik secures the vial, and the screen lists off several known Avengers plus a few of their adversaries. The blood is not that of ordinary people; but some of the strongest amongst them.
Sonya intercepts not!Rhodey outside a door. Fury is in a coughing fit in Skrull HQ. Gravik fires up the machine, there is a bright light that encapsulates the both of them. Gravik, now supersized, throws a punch at Fury, who - SURPRISE! - blocks it. See, the machine gave Fury powers too. Gravik was too caught up in his rage to remember that the stage was set for not just him to be powered up, but Fury too.
PLOT TWIST! It wasn’t Fury, after all. It was G’iah. But this raises the question: Where actually is the real Fury, if this was G’iah? When did he hand the vial off to G’iah? We find out two short scenes later that the real Fury is in the hospital. Which makes sense because Fury was in the hospital the WHOLE time. From last episode, he was always there. However, this means that G’iah would have had to play the long game and shapeshifter into at least 2-3 other people. But the question is when? I ask because the scenes in the hospital occur concurrently with the events at Skrull HQ.
Gravik and G’iah use a few different powers. He powers up with the Abomination, Hulk, Groot, and (???), and she powers up with Extremis, Drax, and Ghosts powers. They begin to fight, and G’iah uses Frost Beast powers. Gravik also utilizes Ebony Maw’s powers. Despite the ice shard G’iah struck him with, he recovers.
We cut to a silo, which opens. It has platforms within; why does this place look so familiar? I feel like we last saw this place in CACW, but I cannot be certain.
We cut back to the fight, and G’iah goes cosmic, just like Captain Marvel, and packs a punch at Gravik. He also has similar powers, playing her at her game. However, she one-up’s him by going Mantis. He plummets to the ground, recovers, and they go at it again. Two ridiculously overpowered individuals slugging it out. He taunts her saying, ‘You’re just like your father. You’re just like them.” She shoots a cosmic beam of light straight through his torso, killing him.
G’iah heads indoors, shutting everything down one machine at a time. She also frees the captives. One of them being the real Rhodey. Which begs the question, how did he get captured? Everett Ross too.
The real Rhodey appears much weaker than everyone else who was rescued; this is explained by him being held hostage “for a very long time”, perhaps for FAR LONGER than anyone else.
Ritson, now better and on the mend, gives a speech to the nation. He says, “We all witnessed the terror attack that was carried out on my motorcade earlier this week in England. The terrorists responsible were a shape-shifting alien-born species known as Skrulls. That is why tonight I’m presenting to Congress, for immediate emergency authorization, a bill that designates all off-world born species enemy combatants. We know who you are. We know how to find you. And we will kill every last one of you.” This is a very political metaphor, and I don’t like speaking of politics on here. However; this speech brings to mind 9/11 of sorts, where because of the actions of a few select subset of individuals from a certain place and racial ethnicity and religion, the USA decides to be openly hostile to that particular group of people, including sending troops to indiscriminately kill the guilty AND innocents of that group. This speech is very scary, because in Secret Invasion, the actions of a few (namely Gravik and his henchmen) have ruined the reputation of the many (innocent Skrulls AND every “off-world born species”). Ritson didn’t want to eradicate a few, he wanted to eliminate them ALL. Didn’t matter who it was, he wanted them all gone.
Sonya meets up (‘gently corners’ sounds better) with G’iah, and offers to make her a leader to fend off Ritson’s planned attack on her people. Sonya and G’iah enter a deal in which both sides can benefit.
Fury drives to a clearing at night. He phones Ritson, and admonishes the president on “that hateful-ass speech” he made. Fury continues, “Putting things back together was never gonna be easy. You took a situation and made it worse. That’s real one-term-President stuff. But we have to act now. Before the hit squads you inspired kill off the Skrulls who still wanna help us. Now you’ve got dumbass vigilantes killing innocent humans, too. When they’re not getting killed themselves. Call off your war.” (This monologue is interspersed with scenes of violence at various places.) Ritson returns fire with, “Give me a break. There’s only one was this ends. The old Nick Fury would have known that. And if you truly care about the Skrulls, get ‘em off my planet.” The President is discriminatory, just like many individuals in power around the world.
Fury is about to head off, but his wife Priscilla (Varra, actually) catches up to him. He tells her, “The Kree said they are open to peace talks with the Skrulls.” She is unamused. “The Kree make peace. Reminds me of that old joke. What do Skrulls call good luck? Bad luck.” Fury requests that Varra join him and be a diplomat, she agrees.
The two head onto the space ship, and the episode ends.
Thoughts: Also a pretty dark episode, but I found the fight between G’iah and Gravik fascinating, not least because we get a glimpse of what a fight would look like if you had the ABSOLUTE strongest genes and the ability to switch between them at will. Wasn’t epic, but fascinating. Oh, and the politics. I barely touch on politics in my posts, but Secret Invasion is a sort of spy vs spy thriller, with obvious political undertones. So, obviously, there are some lines that MCU could and did cross; after all, Marvel really does reflect the world outside our own windows. 10/10 on the intrigue, fascination, and darkness.

Have you seen Secret Invasion finale? If you havent you can ignore this ask:
I havent seen it and I dont plan to see it but I cant believe Rhodey was a skrull since Civil War. Why tf would they do that? Marvel wouldnt have done that with any of their white heroes...WHY RHODEY?!
i’ve only watched the first two eps (but i’ve been keeping up with spoilers thru twt) bc i just became so disinterested after the ending of the first ep. also bc i expected this was gonna be a mess given how they tried to introduce the skrulls as like a metaphor for refugees seeking asylum in captain marvel so the audience could sympathize with them, only to now have to turn around and be like “actually they are dangerous invaders infiltrating society to destroy us” which is just…the usual Republican rhetoric regarding immigration in the us these days??? like wow they thought they were making a big effective narrative in captain marvel only to actually make a big, overall anti-immigrant narrative in the end 💀
all that aside…i truly do not understand what the point of retroactively changing mcu canon to this extent is. like it rly undermines all of rhodey’s appearances post-cacw in a way that i’m sure they’d never do to some other, more major, perhaps coincidentally white characters. if they wanted to make rhodey a skrull so bad i also don’t see why they couldn’t have just done it post-endgame? like what are we doing here 😭
