The green sward of land known as 'The Backs' straddles the languid River Cam and provides exquisite views of the backs of these old colleges.⁣ ⁣ As I've endeavoured to show in this photo set, many of the buildings in Cambridge are extraordinarily beautiful. This beautiful church dates back to 1205 - even older than the University of Cambridge! Great St Mary's was built, rebuilt, burned and built again over the centuries. The current building is largely Tudor. Various leading philosophers of the English Reformation preached there, notably Erasmus and Martin Bucer.
