WEEK 7

CAMERA MOVEMENTS

Steadicam:

A mount for the camera. Helps the cameraman keep the camera steady to enable a smooth movement.

Pan:

Camera remains static and move from the right to left. For example to introduce characters sitting around a table.

Tilt:

Camera remains static but moves up and down.

Dolly shot:

Camera can move forward, backwards, or sideways.

Tracking movement:

A tracking shot is any shot where the camera follows backward, forward or moves alongside the subject being recorded.

Crane shot:

Taken by a camera on a moving crane or jib.

Handheld:

Camera is held by the cinematographer; it has the element of the shake.

Zoom:

Brings the audience closer to the subject.

Reverse zoom:

A movement that zooms in and then back out. It is used to signify shock or disbelief.

also just want to add now that I added Ana Lucia that I don't know if laugh or not because Sawyer was not particularly attached to her BEFORE they had s.ex, their interactions stopped after his little time of captivity, but AFTER he was not only clearly affected by her death but felt the need to tell someone - even Jack! - that they had slept together, like my boy cannot sleep with a woman outside of "work" and stay chill, he gets immediately somewhat involved ?? like Sawyer are you even okay. what are you doing. are you seriously so fkgjfkggf about the fact that you did it with her (and he was visibly more ?!! about her kissing him than about anything else in the show) that you have to confess it to Jack? ? Because 'you are the closest thing I have to a friend' no HE'S NOT, you befriended Jin and Michael way more, and Hurley wanted to be your friend, you just needed to VENT?? Sawyer for the entire show is just: "I'm the Bad Boy of this story. If a woman who scoffed/rolled her eyes at me kisses me/has s.ex with me, I'm into her, it's done. The more we interact the more into her I am in a quick descent towards pining. May fall straight into devotion if it becomes a regular thing, find a way to buy her a ring too. Cannot keep ANYTHING casual ever in my life unless it's a con, ride or die."

I love fiction that cares a lot about food. Detailed food descriptions. Camerashots taking just a bit too long to show the feast served on a table. Item descriptions that make you hungry. Characters who are enthusiastic for food. Characters who consume enough food in one sitting to kill a human being then asking for extra. Knowing a character's favorite food. Characters bonding over food. Food as a way to show culture, social class or personality. Giving food as a sign of love. Food is life and is an universal encompassor of human emotion and weakness and everything that makes us interesting. Giving the food spotlight is such a good way to make any story more living and relatable.

Edgar Wright’s Approach to Filmmaking

When you watch one or two Edgar Wright movie, you get familiar with the visuals and camera shots.  His unique method of shot transitioning also stands out with the energetic and quirky mood of the shot types. But in his movies, the thing that  is pointed out the most is his distinct comedy techniques. Fundamentally we can say that he is a cinematic master when it comes to comedy and close-ups. Fast and controlled pace of zooms became his signature with well-known comedies. In addition to his camera shots, he does a good job balancing originality with parody too. About this he gives an example from Hot Fuzz and says “... that was the idea of taking the boring parts of job and fetishizing them and people say ‘oh that is strange and great at the same time’ ...” 

“Not only does he use close-ups as a comedy device, but he also uses them to set the speed of his movies and, in a way, force the edit. He mentions in the video essay that by starting a scene with a close-up, you are essentially giving the editor no other choice but to mark that shot as the beginning of your scene -- which might be an effective method if you have very specific parameters for different aspects of your film.” (V Renée)

Heighten emotions and intensity of the shots gives audience to fulfilly experience the movie. Personally, when i watch his work, i always feel the tension whether they are funny or not (they are always funny). Like its so cringy and cheesy that you see the vision and the humour in the scenes immediately.

WEEK 5

CAMERA SHOTS

Establishing shot:

Shows a location; to set the scene and establish where the action will take place.

Master shot:

Remains consistent throughout filming. It captures every character's performance, and doesn't change positions.

Aerial/Overhead shot:

Looks down upon a scene. Creates a feeling of foreboding to the audience.

Long shot:

It captures the full body of the character; enables viewers to read them in relation to their surroundings.

Two shot:

Shows two characters in the shot; allows the viewer to read their body language and interaction with each other.

Extreme Long Shot:

To show the shot from a distance.

Mid Shot (Medium):

A waist shot captured at a medium distance; audiences are able to read the body language of a character.

Medium Close Up shot (MCU):

From the mid chest to just above the head. This shot is used to get intimate with the character.

Close up shot:

A shot taken from a close range of the character to show more detail; has a significant emotional connection between the viewer and the character.

Extreme Close Up shot:

Frames the subject very closely to show specific parts of the body, such as the face or just a single eye.

Point of view (POV) shot:

Is shot as if through the eyes of the character; the camera shows exactly what the subject would see. It is usually a short one.

Over The Shoulder (OTS) shot:

The camera is placed just behind an 'off-screen' actor so that their shoulder is in the frame.

The above shots mentioned are the brief descriptions of the types of camera shots we have learned in AS level Media Studies.

Old school vs. New school. Innovation was done based on necessity. My ideal camera is one that is about the size of a phone but naturally with a better grip. Voice activated and is more comprehensive than Amazon Alexa so that I can say things like “Change frame rate to 120”, and it does it. This new magic camera will be able to capture raw files and store them without compression at 1gb per 20 minutes of 8k 120. I want 50stops of dynamic range. Full frame sensor with a new lens adapter that is universal, so any lens, any brand and any size fits on. I want the in-camera stabilization to be so amazing that it’s now called in-camera-steadicam when turned on and there will be no need for a steadicam or gimbal. It would even have tripod mode where you don’t even have to put it on sticks if you don’t want to. I’d love digital noise to not even exist and have a native iso at whatever you want. If you wanted to brighting things up so bright that you can see in the dark, cool, do it, no noise. lol I’m dreaming over here, but mark my words a similar camera will exist, it’s just a matter of when and how much. Let’s innovate! On a side note, love working with the equipment you have, old or new. Sharpen your skills with the tools you have.
