Beans, Planting, Canning, and Harvest
Sometimes the best defense is a fence Tis the season to be gardening and I have been doing exactly that. On Tuesday this past week,  I finished planting my summer garden. this week, I canned kidney and pinto beans. I also planted pole beans and harvested lettuce. Planting Pole Beans I planted the pole beans next to one of the fences where we had planted the tomatoes last year. I believe that…

I love food. Big fan of food. am I consistently and constantly hungry. Food is the best thing. Wow. Can’t believe I live on a planet where I can eat and taste. I can bring food for my friends. I can slice it in half. I can make an ugly bacon egg sandwich just for me. I can reheat food. I can melt cheese on chips. I can give my friends the black licorice jelly beans. I can give my cat a tiny piece of chicken from my bowl. I can cook food. I can season grilled foods spicy in separate batches for my friends with a low spice tolerance. Wow. You can eat . you should eat. I love a burger.

I'd love to play au tenis with you bc I get so many ideas but I don't really have many people to share them with
Like for example I randomly got slapped with an idea earlier today about an au where grian is a pirate on the run from the royal fleet and ends up getting captured alive and brought to a prison, where he meets the guy in the cell next to him who also turns out to be a pirate named scar, and the two of them plan a homoerotic escape together that succeeds but the thing is they never got the chance to see what the other looked like and parted their separate ways under the darkness of light--they only know each other's names--and don't meet again until like two years later where they end up in the same tavern for one reason or another and the unresolved tension that forms when they realize who the other is couldn't even be hacked apart with a sword
-unstoppable object anon
Anon i am GRABBING YOU holy shit this au ROCKS. YOUR MIND. IM GOING INSANE HOLY SHIT!!!!!! that sounds literally so incredible oh my gods im invested just thinking about it. Please feel free to throw aus at me any time bc this FUCKS i love it

Quick vent:
All I want is some idea of how long I should be cooking parboiled white rice for in my new instant pot. I do not need to be lectured on how bad it is that I prefer parboiled white rice to brown rice, and told how much better brown rice is for me and how much healthier it is and how white rice is bad and less nutritious and whatever. I do not like the texture of brown rice, and therefore I am not going to eat it.
Please spare me the diet culture bullshit and just explain to me how long I should cook my rice for.

I get that I was subjected to canned vegetables that were boiled to the point they lost all structure as a kid was because the conventional wisdom for Crohn's back then was that fiber and hard/raw fruits and vegetables would aggravate the intestinal inflammation and that's what my gastroenterologists told my parents, but goddamn am I mad that I didn't know the glory of veggies lightly roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with kosher salt and pepper until I was an adult
Btw that advice is bunk these days as per all my adult gastros and dieticians and from my own personal experience I do well on a moderately fiberous diet

Why do pinto beans take 2 whole ass hours of boiling on medium high heat after an 8hr soak to cook. I think if it takes this long we cannot realistically call this domesticated for human consumption

it's 3 4 a.m. and I'm hungry and we're perpetually (very) poor so bc I can't help it here is a list of some foods I dearly desperately miss:
- COFFEE.
- almost every fast food. just, hot multi-ingredient satisfying meals acquired in under 10 minutes that require no prep, cooking, or cleanup (quality can vary drastically ofc but idgaf at this point)
- more specifically: giant fucking cheeseburgers, hot and juicy, fully dressed. Taco Bell. and Chinese food. And good pizza that doesn't come from dollar store freezers. And biiig thicc sandwiches from subway or similar
- boneless garlic parmesan chicken wings
- Arby's. Roast beef, curly fries.
- French fries in general
- Zaxby's/Panera salads
- only had it a couple times but chipotle/qdoba burritos or bowls
- restaurants. haven't been out to eat since before the pandemic but just, big complicated filling meals cooked by someone else
- more specifically: warm rolls with honey butter, chicken tenders and fries, enchiladas, chicken fried steak, a good hearty chili, fettuccini alfredo with broccoli and chicken, lasagna, fully loaded potato soup, loaded nachos, a good baked spaghetti and meatballs ...
- fried pickles
- homemade comfort food, like, a full "Sunday dinner" spread. Meatloaf, or pot roast with veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked mac n cheese, sweet cornbread, green beans with bacon, deviled eggs, a giant deluxe salad...
- SALADS. BIG FRESH CRISP SALADS WITH ALL THE TOPPINGS AND VARIETY
- a full breakfast spread. hash browns, pancakes, lots of eggs with onions and peppers, juice, sausages, biscuits and gravy, etc
- orange juice
- a wholeass veggie or fruit tray. mostly the carrots, or cantaloupe/strawberries/apples but give me the whole tray and leave me alone
- my "safe" foods
- banana nut bread 😭
- from-scratch home baked goods, more than just the $1-box-cake-and-$1-frosting every few months. All The Bars, All The Cookies, pies, the decadent brownies
- fucking. CHOCOLATE.
- snacks in general. Just, having them, and the ability to grab a handful between meals if needed or desired
- the delicious but "expensive" (>$5) grocery shit we can't splurge on. there's this amazing cranberry almond chicken salad...
- quiche
- hamburger helper
- polish sausage fried with peppers and onions and sauerkraut
- potato salad
- deli pepperturkey
- non-american cheese
- butterscotch pudding
- chili cheese tater tots
- pizza rolls
- donuts
- granola bars. trail mix
- yogurt with or without granola topping
- really anything that isn't plain rice and beans, bologna/cheese/PB&J sandwiches, ramen, hot dogs, oatmeal, toast, canned mixed veggies, generic boxed mac n cheese, butter noodles, and frozen waffles
- i have to stop now. if u read this far, thanks! pls go indulge in ur favorite foods and take your time to deeply savor them

Beans.
My partner and I have a running joke with a friend. Every time he goes on holiday we increase the quantity of beans in his flat.
The first time we bought ~30 cans of kidney beans and hid them around the house like some Easter egg hunt thing but with beans.
The Second time we bought ~6kg dried white beans and hid those in various places. Nearly every receptacle that could safely hold beans became the home of beans. My personal favourite was emptying an oat milk carton, very carefully washing and drying it, filling it with beans and then just putting it back among several other cartons.
He went on holiday again a couple of weeks ago. Obviously there is an expectation of bean-based shenanigans. And obviously we have to beat our previous efforts.
Our friend has (had) a mosaic on his wall of the famous Marilyn Monroe Pop-Art by Andy Warhol. He made the mosaic himself. Over the last couple of weeks we have spent hours and hours assembling a frame, drawing up a pattern and gridding out a 70 x 70 frame and gluing an untold amount of beans to it. I have spent over 21 hours gluing beans to a frames.
For the last couple of days I ended up going to bed at 5:00 am because I lost track of time whilst experimenting with which types of glue works best with different beans (I now have *opinions* on this, y’all). The day of our friend’s return we spent the morning and afternoon grouting the piece and wiping it down and wiping it down again and wiping it down again because grout is just like that. In the evening we went to install the mosaic, just a few hours before his return. Here’s a comparison between the original and our clearly superior replication, and the new piece installed in its rightful place.
