Rhiannon Giddens - Birmingham Sunday (Official Audio)
Rhiannon Giddens
The 16th Street Baptist was a large and prominent church located downtown, just blocks from Birmingham's commercial district and City Hall. Just before 11 o'clock on September 15, 1963, instead of rising to begin prayers, the congregation was knocked to the ground. As a bomb exploded under the steps of the church, they sought safety under the pews and shielded each other from falling debris.

We will never forget the bombing at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on this date September 15, 1963.
From left to right:
Addie Mae Collins, 14.
Carole Robertson, 14.
Cynthia Wesley, 14.
Denise McNair 11.
A bomb planted by Ku Klux Klan members ripped through a Birmingham church, killing four little girls as they prepared for Sunday services.
The FBI determined that four members of a local KKK klavern known as the "Cahaba River Bridge Boys" were responsible for the bombing. The first prosecution didn't come until 1977. Then two more in the early 2000s. The fourth killer died, never being brought to account.

Remembering the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing
On September 15, 1963, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, claimed the lives of four young girls—Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair. This tragic attack came at the height of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement, galvanizing support for the struggle against racial injustice.
The outrage following this event helped pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This horrific act of hate shocked the nation and strengthened the fight for justice and equality. Today, we honor their memory by continuing to work for a world where love and peace triumph over hate.

Bright is the Ring of Words by Robert Louis Stevenson
Bright is the ring of words When the right man rings them, Fair the fall of songs When the singer sings them. Still they are carolled and said – On wings they are carried – After the singer is dead And the maker is buried. Low as the singer lies In the field of heather, Songs of his fashion bring The swains together. And when the west is red With the sunset embers, The lover lingers and sings And the maid remembers.
Taken from a gorgeous hardback edition of A Treasury of Scottish Verses compiled by Fleur Robertson. On one page is a poem and on the other is a picture of Scotland's natural landmarks. I can't believe I came across such a gem of a book while thrifting. The flowers are hand-crafted soap sculptures made by Tales of Soap, a small Irish business.

Marin has been the subject of four Hirschfelds, some of which you've already seen in these posts. Though PBS may have made the sad decision to censor Marin's big nude scene in the professional taping of Passion, Al Hirschfeld had no qualms about depicting her in the way she was meant to be. I do think, however, even in his final attempt, he was never able to accurately capture the sheer size of this woman's mouth.

Marin was honored with a Sardis caricature in 2000 during her Tony-nominated run in Kiss Me, Kate, and ten years later, she returned when her husband Jason received his. At the time, they were starring as the husband-wife duo in Next to Normal. While the expanse of her mouth is certainly featured, it's still not quite what I'd expect.

At last, someone was able to do justice to Marin's signature mouth size. Like Carol Channing, Marin's mouth is the stuff of Broadway legend. Sources even say that when she was younger, she'd put her whole fist in it as a party trick.

"The day Marin passed, I got an email asking me to pay tribute. I don’t want to seem dramatic, but since Marin is a friend, I was in the midst of my own small grieving process, so I used the assignment as part of it all. This was the result. We will always think of Marin when we see sunflowers." - Justin "Squigs" Robertson

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Alice
Alice was a sweat young woman who worked as a secretary at Wayne Enterprises.  She caught the eye of the experimental neurologist, Jarvis Tetch.  Tetch was captivated by Alice in that her name and naive kindness so reminded him of the titular character from his favorite book, Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland.
When Alice’s longtime boyfriend, Billy, broke off their relationship, Tetch seized on the opportunity to try to sweep her off her feet.  Tech took her out on the town and, using his newly developed mind control technology, he succeeded in convincing her that he was a renown celebrity.
Shortly thereafter Billy apologized to Alice.  He broke things off because he was scared of how much he loved her.  He had come to terms with this and proposed marriage to Alice.  She gleefully accepted.
This enraged Tetch.  Unhinged, he took on the guise of The Mad Hatter and used his mind control circuit cards to force Alice to be his companion.  Fortunately, Alice was saved by Batman and Tetch was remanded to Arkham Asylum.  Tech would go on to find new obsessions whereas Alice and Billy were happily wed.
Actress Kimmy Robertson provided the voice for Alice, appearing in the twenty-seventh episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Mad as a Hatter.’
