10 Incredible June 2023 Book Releases
It seems to be the month of genre fiction, but to be honest I’m fully okay with that. There’s so many incredible historical fiction and mystery / thriller books coming out over the next 30 days that I’ll absolutely be reading as soon possible! I love writing these posts because they help keep me up to date on books that I wouldn’t otherwise be aware of, and that’s never been more the case than…

💛Smoshblr December Asks Day 23💙
What are your top 3 favourite books (/comics/manga/poems/etc...) and/or top 3 you would recommend to others?
oh god............. top 3 favorite books is so hard bc i read SO much and then. stopped. but here's my semi-outdated list:
aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz, tangled by carolyn mackler, and kindred by octavia e. butler, damian duffy, and john dennings. (also my favorite manga is assassination classroom that silly lil series my beloved)
top 3 books that i would recommend are hard, bc i read so many different genres, but i think a safe and easy three are: aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz (everyone ever should read this book. like just once. it changed me fundamentally as a person), carry on by rainbow rowell (or fangirl by rainbow rowell depending on the person i think. anyway i got my best friend a copy of this for her graduation and like wrote a personalized message in it so. you know. its everything to me.), and the raven boys by maggie stiefvater.
(if you're, like, an avid reader though, i may recommend kindred by octavia e. butler, damian duffy, and john dennings, the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky, and the five people you meet in heaven by mitch albom)

✨Sort Of Slice Of Life YA Books✨
THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS
By: Carolyn Mackler
Tumblr media
"Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves has a larger-than-average body and a plus-size inferiority complex, especially when she compares herself to her slim, brilliant, picture-perfect family. But that’s before a shocking phone call — and a horrifying allegation — about her rugby-star brother changes everything. With irreverent humor and surprising gravity, Carolyn Mackler creates an endearingly blunt heroine who speaks to every teen who struggles with family expectations, and proves that the most impressive achievement is to be true to yourself."

What are your top 3 favorite books and what is your favorite genre to read?
Thank you for the ask!
My most favorite book of all time is Love and Other Four Letter Words by Carolyn Mackler. It's a coming of age story about a teen dealing with moving to New York City and her parents' separation. I really enjoy it.
These other two books are ones I return to often so I am counting them as favs.
The first is The Big Book of Grimm. It is a series of comics about the Grimm fairytale. Every story is written by a different artist, and they are all very unique.
The other one is Oh Yikes! History's Grossest Wackiest Moments by Joy Masoff and illustrations by Terry Sirrell. It is an assortment of odd facts about history. Kinda like Horrible Histories but in book form.
My favorite genre to read is historical nonfiction. Mostly about poisons and medicine. It is fascinating.
For fiction I think I like Scifi and Fantasy the best. However, I often struggle with fiction books because I focus a lot on characters. So a bad character can ruin a story for me.
Thank you again!

“On Valentine’s Day, the Spirit Club plastered the school with red streamers and pink balloons and red and pink hearts. It looked like Clifford the Big Red Dog ate a flock of flamingoes and then barfed his guts up.” ― Carolyn Mackler, Vegan, Virgin, Valentine “Cupid, draw back you bow” Note to self if you drop a rose bush don’t try to catch it. “The reason books get banned, but movies can do almost anything is because the novel is more powerful than a movie. The reader is part of the creation of the story because they must imagine and envision it. There is creation in the act of reading.”

17, 18 and 21 for the adorable ask game! <3
17. Favorite game as a child?
oh... i was big on life. like the board game. good times! otherwise my friends and i did a lot of like home-made movies (i was a theater kid)
18. Comfort book?
theres a few answers to this one!!
Basic Answer: the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky. i... was a depressed teenager KLNDNLKFD so not only is this one of my comfort books, this is also one of my comfort Movies. i still struggle with my depression/mental health, but man oh man there's nothing like when i was reading this. i had just had a major friend breakup, i didn't want to go to school anymore, and man. charlie was just like me fr. take this as you will.
Cool Answer: aristotle and dante vs the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire sáenz. are you gay? are you cool? then THIS is the answer i will tell you. changed my life. friends to lovers, unreliable narrator, BISEXUALITY. angst with a happy ending. Nothing does it like them!!!!
Niche/Pretentious Answer: kindred by octavia e. butler, adapted by damian duffy, and illustrated by john jennings. LOVE her. i read this in college (assigned by my favorite teacher of all time thanks dad xx) and it like. changed me fundamentally. this started my dissent into books with darker and more thought-provoking themes. when i tell you i was strictly ya novel before and now i've opened my frontal lobe. anyway tw that this book deals in-depth with slavery and sexual assault before you look into it but it's truly one of my favorite things ive ever read and im itching to read her again
Actual Answer: tangled by carolyn mackler. is it good? no. it's actually pretty garbage ngl. was it my first introduction to mental health advocacy and a plus-size heroine? yes. she's my everything but secretly <3333
21. Favorite word?
i got so excited about the books i forgot to answer this LKNSNDLKND sorry. hm... i wanna say something like 'serendipity' but my favorite word is honestly probably 'slay'
send me adorable asks!
