In gearing up for a career change, I've been considering what my passions are and I've been a little stuck. It's an odd thing to go back and think about at my age...not that we don't change a ton between 20 and 43, we absolutely do and that's a good thing, but to really sit and take a good look at what moves you is typically a thing that younger people do before they start their careers and to a degree their minds and attitudes are better suited for self reflection and exploration.
When I was a teenager ten thousand years ago, my father decided we were going to build houses with Habitat for Humanity. He liked building stuff, I also liked it, people needed houses...simple. It was about a year into that when a guy we worked with asked me if I wanted to come work with him in his shop building cabinets and furniture. People were ordering things for Christmas, it was just him and one other guy, they needed help. So I went and worked with him, he taught me a lot, and it was hard but very fun so I'm 17 and have decided this is what I want to do.
I tell my father and he's confused. A carpenter? Really? No, no...you have to go to college. He didn't come all this way for his son to do manual labor.
I remember asking him "so it's good enough for Jesus but I can't do it?" which he was silent about for a while. No good reason, it's just not what he envisioned for me and eventually I gave up. Went to college, had a variety of jobs that were fine until I ended up here in the job I have now. I've sold cars, I put my own schooling on hold for some years to put my ex wife through school when her parents cut her off, doing the highest paying thing I could do with my skillset (talking) and an unfinished degree...being shipped around the country selling software. I can't even tell you what that was like, it was so mentally taxing and I was just always going.
But I did learn something incredibly valuable, which leads me to my really drawn out point. Frequently there were language and access barriers that prevented me from being able to close deals. You can't sell English language only software (of which there are almost none now but this was long time ago) to schools with strong ESL programs. They need a Spanish option...huge roadblock in southern California, the southwest, and south Texas. We had very little for special needs schools.
There were always handouts but frequently there were no actual people or departments that dealt with the care and management of special needs students. A secretary would hand me something and then disappear. I would never get a feel of what their needs were and if I ever asked they couldn't tell me.
When I came to work at my branch, that still bothered me. What bothered me even more is that I was coming up against the same problem. We had no audiobooks, no books in braille, no bilingual staff, only English language books, no one knew sign language but me. A library should be a place where anyone can go to get the information and enrichment that they need to learn and thrive. It's better now, but lack of funding has always been an issue and we never have been able to get to where I'd like us to be.
I'm 43 years old and realizing that my real passion is accessibility. Ease of use. Making what is difficult less so in whatever way possible. There are so many apps and programs now that hit that mark, but in talking to people who would know I've found out that the human element is lacking. For better or worse we are social creatures and sometimes you just want another person there to guide you.
I will formally resign my position soon, when I can set some things in motion to ensure that my assistant, Angela, will be asked to take over for me. I love my branch, I believe in it, and she's the only one I know who loves it like I do and will make it stronger. We're the only two who know, she's asked me if I'll still do storytime and I'm just delighted that she'd keep me for such an important job.
This is going to be a big year.

😈😅🎶🛠️
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
I divide music into stuff I can passively listen to for actually writing, and stuff I can actively listen to for inspiration, introspection or a mood boost. When writing, I avoid Star Wars soundtracks unless I want to invoke the associated canon moment(s).
I've had Anchor by Blue Stahli on loop most often lately. I really love the whole Quartz/Bronze/Obsidian era and can't recommend it enough for fellow Star Wars peoples.
My most looped instrumental song is probably "Weeping Ghost" by John Carpenter.
Some of my go-to passive listening music:
> Master Boot Record (music for people who miss floppy disks and CRT monitors)
> Gost (not to be confused with Ghost)
>Horror movie/horror game soundtracks
> Very technical electric guitars
> Ivan Torrent and similar artists who blend a kind of cyber or futuristic sound with a more choral/orchestral/"epic fantasy" sort of feel
🛠What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?
Since I voice type bc pain, my rough drafts go to a dictation app called Speechnotes. It's the only voice typing app I know of that allows continuous dictation (including with the screen shut off), doesn't lock all its good features behind a paywall, and is relatively good at handling things like background noise or murmured speech. I then use Google docs to edit.
For the dirty work of plotting, outlining, and keeping notes, I use mostly physical media: post-it notes, lined index cards, large spiral sketchbooks, colour codable folders, Bristol board. This allows me to take in everything at once more easily.
I do use one Android app, called Writer's Companion, to keep a shortened version of each multi chap story's timeline handy.
😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?
Honestly most of Laugh Lines. Partly, when I took on the prompt I didn't realize how unsuited my writing tendencies are for a full "nothing bad ever happened" route.
Also embarrassed by how the darn thing just kind of ran away from me, like, Ahsoka and Reva were supposed to have bigger roles but Sors kriffing Bandeam overtook them both??? How did it take me almost 2k words just to get Anakin and Obi-Wan alone together???
😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
I think. I kinda think having Sors as Anakin's padawan counts. Just. Watch the creche scene again but with a magic crystal ball in your hand that insists that would've been Anakin's second padawan if he'd stayed a Jedi. Then try to imagine how I sleep at night lmao.

7 Ways to Effectively Promote Your Referral Program
Did you know that influencer marketing delivers more than 500 percent returns on investment (ROI)? As per a recent stat, every dollar invested in influencer marketing generates an average return of $5.20.
If you’re running a referral program, or are planning to run one, then you need to make sure that your influencers are invested and motivated in your program. For that to happen, you must see to it that your influencers get the most out of your referral incentive program.
Behind every successful referral program, there are well-rewarded and delighted influencers and customers. This blog post discusses seven ways to keep your influencers interested and motivated in your program in the long run.
1. Have clear, defined goals
Before running a referral incentive program, be extremely clear about your goals and know what you want from your influencers. Some of the following questions can help you find greater clarity with your referral program.
Do you want to attract more influencers?
Do you want to promote your product to the followers of a particular influencer?
Do you want your influencers to promote a specific product or service?
What amount of monetary and non-monetary rewards can you give your influencers?
After finding answers to the above questions, you can know what exactly you want from your loyalty program.
2. Choose a high-quality loyalty solution for your referral program
Finding a loyalty solution provider in a highly crowded market is not a big thing in itself. But choosing the right loyalty partner can mean the difference between a successful referral incentive program and a failed one.
A high-quality loyalty platform will enable you to automate your referral program and give the right rewards to all your influencers. When it comes to joining hands with the right loyalty provider, you need to do your research and consider those solutions providers who have a proven track record of creating and deploying effective referral programs. A company such as LoyaltyXpert that has a dedicated and competent team and years of experience in delighting its clients can be the one-stop solution for all your loyalty needs.
3. Customize incentives for your influencers
The need to customize your referral incentives for your influencers can’t be overstated. Creating customized incentives and reward programs can make influencers feel special and make them more effective when they are working for your brand.
To customize your referral programs for your influencers you must know everything about them. Say, for instance, you are in the plywood and laminates industry. Your influencers are carpenters. You must understand their psychology and what they want. Conducting surveys and creating personas is a good way to categorize your influencers and create customized rewards for them.
4. Spread the word about your referral program
When it comes to running a highly effective referral incentive program, leave no stone unturned to promote it. Leverage your social media accounts to promote your referral programs. Email marketing also works like magic when it comes to promoting referral programs. Make sure you have an email id list of high-quality customers and influencers. Promote the referral program throughout your app.
Another effective way to promote your referral program is by creating an explainer page. Apart from that, promote your program organically by encouraging your customers to spread the word, share reviews and testimonials as social proof, and add social sharing buttons. You may also create order status emails, post-purchase emails, in-store promotional materials, and referral links in purchase stages to better promote your referral program.
5. Gift pre-launch product features
Gifting pre-launch product features is one of the most effective ways to generate buzz before the launch of a product. Every time your influencers refer to your products and generate a high-quality lead or a sale, consider gifting them some pre-launch product features. You can also use the same strategy to reward all of your valuable customers.
6. Showcase influencers in brand video
In case you use video marketing, then showcase your influencers in your brand videos. Many influencers, if not all, love to appear on video content that’s relevant to their niche. The more opportunities for them to appear in brand videos, the more popular they become in a wider circle.
In the same way, it’s a win-win scenario for brands. The more screen time they give to their partner influencers, the more they will be known by the legions of followers and the more they will be accepted. That makes it an attractive proposition for both parties.
7. Use giveaways and provide attractive offers on products or services
Giveaways are among the most effective ways to promote referral programs. Apart from motivating your influencers, giveaways will help you generate high-quality leads and expand your social reach by leaps and bounds.
Offers on products and services not only enhance sales but work like a charm for your referral programs as well. You can reward your highly productive influencers by providing them with exclusive coupons, gift cards, vouchers, and many more financial rewards.
All in all,
A referral program is a gold standard for business growth. It is a must-have tool for businesses in almost every industry. To run a successful referral program, you must make sure that your influencers are well-rewarded and are happy with the referrals.
At LoyaltyXpert, we know what it takes to create effective referral programs. We have helped our clients in rewarding their influencers in the best possible way. If you would like to run successful referral programs, Book a free demo today.

Rise of the Robots: Automation and Tech Becoming More Popular as Pandemic Restricts Human Contact
For humans to be comfortable with robots, they must be designed in ways that don’t creep us out.
For years, the rapid advance of technology has stoked fears that robots are coming for humans' jobs.
But when the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down across the world in the spring, robots have come to the rescue — and public perception of them has become more positive as a result.
"I've noticed headlines have changed regarding robots," Julie Carpenter, a research fellow with the ethics and emerging sciences group at California State Polytechnic, told Spark host Nora Young.
"It's definitely pivoted from 'The robots are coming for your jobs' headlines to, 'Robots in the pandemic, and they'll save us all by shining UV light on everything,' and that sort of thing."
Headlines — and novel photographs — have depicted machines of all levels of sophistication bridging the gap between physically-distanced humans.
In Toronto, the Tiny Mile AI robot is making food deliveries instead of couriers — at a discounted rate for restaurants compared to third-party delivery apps.
Robots with powerful UV lights are being used to disinfect everything from hospitals in China to a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Manitoba.
And in a Boston hospital, a doglike robot named Spot takes COVID patients' vital signs, reducing health-care workers' risk of contracting the coronavirus.
Robotics can complement jobs, not replace them: prof
For all that robots and technology have done to help keep us safe during the pandemic, it hasn't completely assuaged fear of its effect on the job market.
A Statistics Canada study released in June estimated that office support workers, salespeople and employees in industrial or construction trades were far more likely to lose their jobs to automation than people in careers like law, education and government.
The study noted, however, that COVID-19 may affect those projections in ways that are "largely unknown and dependent on several factors," the study authors wrote.
"The closure of workplaces during the pandemic and efforts to minimize physical contact between people may motivate employers to 'virus-proof' their production practices by adopting technological solutions. Additionally, many businesses have moved much of their sales and customer services online, increasing their reliance on digital technologies," they explained.
In the U.S., Time's Alana Semeuls explained that in the late 1800s and 1900s, companies retrained employees for new jobs to replace old jobs transformed by increasing automation and industrialization. And governments invested in education, as a workforce largely made up of farmers diversified into bankers, engineers and more.
But today, tax incentives in the U.S. mean companies might pay less tax purchasing equipment than spending the same amount of money hiring workers.
However, Frank Pasquale, a law professor at Brooklyn Law School, argues that human jobs don't have to be traded in for the inevitable advances in technology and artificial intelligence.
In his book New Laws of Robotics: Defending Human Expertise in the Age of AI, he draws a line between AI, or artificial intelligence, and what he calls I.A., or intelligence augmentation.
He gave an example of an AI robot doctor scanning a patient and handing out a diagnosis, compared to a human doctor using an advanced scanner to compare a person's vital signs to millions of archived images of cancerous and non-cancerous cells to help aid the diagnosis.
"The idea is that ultimately you'd have the doctor as an intermediary between the technology and [the] person who's being treated," he said.
As of now, a robot programmed with preferred responses to a patient or customer's questions is no substitute for genuine person-to-person communication — and Pasquale argues it's foolish to pretend otherwise.
"The robot may simulate emotion and empathy, but because it is itself not mortal … it is sort of a counterfeiting of the human ability to understand, reflect, [and] empathize," he said.
He developed four "new laws of robotics" to navigate its growing role in society, a play on sci-fi author Isaac Asimov's laws of robotics introduced in the 1942 short story Runaround.
Pasquale's new laws are:
Employ robotics and A.I. in ways that complement professionals, instead of replacing them.
Prevent robots from mimicking human qualities like empathy or emotion
Avoid "arms races" between robotics researchers.
Keep record of who designed or controls a robot, in order to know who to contact — or hold responsible — in case something goes wrong.
Robotic tools, or companions?
As the pandemic thrusts robots and automation further into the mainstream spotlight, some people may find them unusual, or even unnerving.
Carpenter explained that many people's expectations of robots are based in science fiction. And in the West, at least, those depictions are often threatening. For every R2-D2 in Star Wars, she says, you'll find a seething Terminator — or the murderous robot dog in Black Mirror.
"It's a combination of fascination at the technology, but also a little bit of fear [and] trepidation because they don't understand its capabilities and its limitations," said Carpenter.
If you're introducing robots into the workplace, she said, talk to your colleagues about what they're being used for, and how they might affect everyone's work.
"Have discussions with your staff. Say, this is what we're thinking about. These are the robots we're looking at. This is how your job might change," she said.
Sometimes, Carpenter added, people might be more willing to embrace robots in the workplace if they take on a familiar form — like how the four-legged Spot resembles a dog.
But she noted that people can develop an attachment to robots simply because of the roles they play, even without anthropomorphizing them.
Carpenter studied how the U.S. military uses robots for tasks like bomb disposal for her book Culture and Human-Robot Interaction in Militarized Spaces.
She found that many U.S. military forces use robots for sensitive or dangerous tasks, such as explosive disposal. Even though they looked more like miniature tanks, some soldiers would give them names, or consider them a mascot for their unit.
"I want to emphasize, though, they would never regard it the same as a human teammate, at this point," she said.
"But you can see … that we're navigating and negotiating where robots fit into our lives, even socially."

About me
My name is Edward J. Carpenter, I'm 35 years old. I'm a backend developer working for https://www.deskree.com/. Create a scalable backend infrastructure with lots of features through a simple web interface.
Mobile apps can be classified into two groups: those that don't transmit queries to remote databases, and those that do. This includes applications like photo editors, timers, and alarms. The second category includes apps that need to at least identify users and save their names and phone number. The application requires a separate space to store these data which is known as the server or backend. Mobile development of an app can be done with a client-server architecture.
The client is the mobile app which shows the user interface and serves to fulfill what the user wants to achieve. If we consider the online store app as an example, through it, the user interacts items, searches, and filters, submits items to their cart and then makes a purchase.
The server (or backend) is a device that runs a software program to process data. The program must also contain coded to work as a mobile application. The backend is the thing that allows the online store to function. It handles the data of products and accounting, as well as order creation and processing of payments.
A great backend offers flexibility and allows the backend developer to add new features without problems or crutches and thus develop the application; the possibility of scaling; proactive technical support, that can provide an instant response to a query and quickly correct an issue or make necessary adjustments to improve the product.
Although the user might not see the backend at all, its importance is paramount. It's an entirely separate part of your product and needs to be taken care of. If you don't know how to understand the backend as an independent product, it'll degrade to just API documentation.
Are you ready to get started using Deskree today? We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The breakup ballad's release prompted TikTok speculation that Rodrigo is singing to Joshua Bassett directly in the lyrics. And because Bassett has been seen hanging out with Sabrina Carpenter, many on the app believe the lyrics reference his moving on with the 21-year-old actress/singer.
Olivia Rodrigo 'Drivers License' LYRICS:
I got my driver's license last week Just like we always talked about 'Cause you were so excited for me To finally drive up to your house But today I drove through the suburbs Crying 'cause you weren't around
And you're probably with that blonde girl Who always made me doubt She's so much older than me She's everything I'm insecure about Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs 'Cause how could I ever love someone else?
And I know we weren't perfect but I've never felt this way for no one And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me 'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street
And all my friends are tired Of hearing how much I miss you, but I kinda feel sorry for them 'Cause they'll never know you the way that I do, yeah Today I drove through the suburbs And pictured I was driving home to you
And I know we weren't perfect But I've never felt this way for no one, oh And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay, now that I'm gone I guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me 'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street
Red lights, stop signs I still see your face in the white cars, front yards Can't drive past the places we used to go to 'Cause I still fuckin' love you, babe (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh) Sidewalks we crossed I still hear your voice in the traffic, we're laughing Over all the noise God, I'm so blue, know we're through But I still fuckin' love you, babe (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
I know we weren't perfect but I've never felt this way for no one And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay, now that I'm gone 'Cause you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me 'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street Yeah, you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, “merit shop” companies secured further competitive advantages by converting their workforce to independent contractors. This eliminated their employer contributions to Social Security and Medicare, and their workers’ compensation insurance policies. The Carter administration gave regulatory approval to this labor-market transformation when the Congress legislated Section 530 of the Internal Revenue Act of 1978. Further liberalized by the Reagan administration, the law allows employers to classify workers as independent contractors if a pre-existing pattern for contracting existed in an industry.
Long before the proliferation of app-based employment in transportation, the shift in the construction industry towards independent contracting by nonunion employers marked the emergence of the gig economy. The nature of construction work remained unchanged: subcontractors continued to direct the same structural, drywall, window framing, utilities, flooring or roofing projects on sites. But given the legal shift in tax collection and employment obligations, this massive shift towards “self-employment” represented the de facto toleration of widespread payroll fraud. State workers’ compensation programs lose as much as $1.74 billion annually to such payroll misclassification, according to a 2020 study sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and the Institute for Construction Economic Research. Workers are denied at least $811 million annually in FLSA-mandated overtime pay. Employers shift at least $3 billion in annual Social Security and Medicare taxes onto their workers’ paychecks.

As film and TV sets reopen at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, home to big-screen juggernauts like "Avengers: Endgame," the biggest job is keeping the coronavirus off the Georgia studio's lot.
The several hundred producers, set designers, painters and carpenters working to get productions ready undergo tests for Covid-19 weekly, and sometimes more often. An app tracks workers' symptoms between tests, and a badge system prevents anyone without a negative test result from opening doors on the lot.
The regime of testing will cost more than $1.5 million a month once cameras are rolling and several thousand workers are on set, said the studio's chief executive, Frank Patterson, noting that is what is needed to stay in business.
Pinewood Atlanta is trying to solve a riddle facing a host of businesses, schools and universities headed into this fall: How much Covid-19 testing is needed to ensure people can stay safe and keep organizations functioning amid a pandemic. At many companies, tests for active infections or antibodies are becoming a condition of returning to the workplace, along with symptom checks and stepped-up cleaning practices, medical consultants say.
Mr. Patterson steeped himself in research on testing, viral transmission and air quality when the pandemic halted film shoots in mid-March. With streaming services and Hollywood studios relying on him to produce new content, he aimed to restart his company's shooting as soon as possible and become what he calls "one of the most secure and safest studios in the world."
That security doesn't come cheap. These days, around 200 workers each day get a nasal-swab Covid-19 test, costing Pinewood Atlanta about $200 each. When cameras are rolling later this year, 3,000 to 6,000 workers will be on set daily, compounding costs.
"We have to pay a premium just to get back to work. It's painful, but it's not stopping anyone," Mr. Patterson said.
Pinewood Atlanta has been involved in some of the world's highest-grossing franchises, such as "Avengers: Endgame," as well as content for streaming services. The production company believes testing expenses will eventually qualify for the state's film-production tax credits. A spokeswoman for Georgia's revenue department said it plans to put out guidance on allowed expenses soon.
Employers who want results quickly must hunt for labs that can guarantee speedy results and priority treatment.
Right now, testing in the U.S. involves a patchwork of public, private and academic laboratories that can offer their own testing services or partner with drugstores, doctors and other groups. That decentralized system has recently been plagued by supply-chain strains and a surge in demand that has led to delays in results for many individuals.
"We just don't have a real functioning market," where demand for testing can easily find lab capacity in the U.S., said Sean Murray, president of Eurofins's workplace Covid-19 testing program.
To run its tests, Pinewood Atlanta hired health-testing and software-company BioIQ Inc., which relies on a network of labs. The company offers results in 24 to 48 hours, and Mr. Patterson says his studio is also willing to courier or rapidly ship tests to labs for faster processing.
"The tighter your feedback loop the more quickly you can learn and adapt," BioIQ Chief Executive Justin Bellante said of the need for quick turnaround times in results. Weekslong waits for many people tested in the U.S. have slowed contact-tracing and containment efforts.
Workers at Pinewood Atlanta report for testing days before they are scheduled to be on the lot to allow time for results to come in. A nurse performs a nasal swab for their first test; if that first test comes back negative, subsequent tests are conducted via saliva samples.
All workers on Pinewood productions have to answer health questions via an app on their phones. A completed questionnaire and a negative Covid-19 result get an all-clear code on the app, which workers present at a checkpoint at the studio. To open doors on the campus, workers must scan a badge; the badges only work if the wearer has received a negative test result.
Security guards at the checkpoint on the lot issue cleared workers a different color wristband each day. On-site Covid compliance officers, as well as fellow workers, keep watch to ensure everyone has the same color wristband.
The frequency of testing for workers at the studio is determined by factors such as the level of person-to-person interaction in their jobs. The highest-risk workers are tested three times a week, and Mr. Patterson said some actors prefer daily testing.
Figuring out testing led to some friction along the way, Mr. Patterson said, but partner studios and unions have reached a point where some preproduction work has resumed. The film industry as a whole hasn't yet adopted formal testing rules and Pinewood Atlanta will adjust its still-evolving protocols as standards are established.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised that testing workers without virus symptoms may be useful in areas with significant community spread, though employers should consider factors such as the availability of tests and rate of positive results in previous employee tests.
Siemens Healthineers AG's world-wide testing program for its 50,000 workers will rely on consistent rules for all employees and includes regular testing for active infections and viral antibodies.
Workers' testing will depend on their location, the state of infection in the area, how much they travel and their work setting, said Deepak Nath, the company's president of laboratory diagnostics. Those who report to a corporate facility or travel in areas where the virus isn't contained will be required to get weekly tests and monthly antibody tests, which Siemens Healthineers produces.
Public-health officials have given mixed reviews to antibody tests, which require a blood draw to detect the presence of virus-fighting cells. They warn that having had Covid-19 isn't a guarantee against future infections. Yet medical advisers who work with employers say the tests can give companies a sense of the prevalence of the virus among their workforces.
Elon Musk's SpaceX has partnered with the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard to test workers in the Los Angeles area and in Washington state for Covid-19 antibodies, said people familiar with the matter. SpaceX didn't respond to requests for comment.
Dr. Nath said he didn't expect needing such elaborate testing to keep workplaces open back in March, but the continued global infections make it necessary, he said. The company is self-insured, meaning it pays for all of its employee health-care costs. It declined to say how much testing will likely cost.
"We truly haven't used cost as a filter through which to say whether we test or don't test," Dr. Nath said.
Grocery-chain Kroger Co. has begun shipping at-home tests to workers that cost about $60 to process. Microsoft Corp. offers on-site testing to employees and their families if they want it, a spokesman said.
While workplace testing is a financial strain for businesses now, costs could fall as pooled-testing methods become available, Mr. Murray of Eurofins said.
"It really is about money. If it were free, I think there'd be testing all over the place," he said.
Employers are trying other tactics alongside testing such as new air-quality and circulation measures and additional cleaning. At Pinewood Atlanta, productions are likely to employ fewer extras, and intimate moments between actors will be simulated with visual effects, Mr. Patterson said.
"Will it actually be actors exchanging spit? Unlikely," he said. "If we can do characters traveling universes and conquering worlds [with effects], we can certainly have two lovers kissing."

The Lego company patented their design of Lego bricks on January 28, 1958, still compatible with bricks produced today
International LEGO Day
Lego (stylized as LEGO) are plastic construction toys, including interlocking plastic bricks of various colors—as well as accompanying minifigures, gears, and other parts—that can be put together and taken apart, and be used to construct many objects, like model buildings, vehicles, and robots. It was on today's date in 1958 that a patent for Lego bricks was applied for, which is why today is known as International LEGO® Day, a day on which we celebrate all things Lego.
Lego bricks and other items are manufactured by the Lego Group, which is based in Billund, Denmark. It was in this city in 1932 that a carpenter by the name of Ole Kirk Christiansen began making wooden toys. Two years later, his company began being called "Lego," which came from leg godt, the Danish phrase meaning "play well." The company started making plastic toys in 1947, and interlocking bricks in 1949. Called "Automatic Binding Bricks," they were based on Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks.
On January 28, 1958, Christiansen's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, submitted an application for a patent for a "Toy Building Brick." These new bricks were made with ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) polymer. All Lego bricks, then and now, are compatible with each other, no matter their size or what they are used to build. Since the 1950s, thousands of Lego sets of various themes and environments have been produced. Some of them include space, castle, city, pirates, and trains. Lego themes have also been licensed from film, cartoon, and video game franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman, Indiana Jones, and Minecraft. Additionally, Lego manufactures Mindstorms, a robotics line of Lego, and Duplo, consisting of bigger blocks for younger children. Minifigures walked onto the scene in 1978 and can be found in many sets. Some older Lego sets are quite valuable today.
In 1998, Lego became one of the first inductees into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Lego pieces have appeared in works of art, in classrooms as educational tools, in books, and in film. Besides blocks and sets, the Lego Group has been behind movies, board and video games, and robotics competitions. There also are Legoland amusement parks, Legoland Discovery Centers, and Lego Stores. On International LEGO® Day, we mark the anniversary of the patent application for Lego bricks, and we celebrate everything Lego.
