Dean will travel back in time to try to really stop the Apocalypse from its root, this time Dean will contact Castiel before events, and part of his mission is to try to convince the angel to join him, explaining they're the good guys and angels and Heaven are not, while trying to avoid the urge of kissing his angel. But something won't go as they expected, and Dean will have to change the plan. This is mid season 15 canon divergent fic. The time travel is before Dean going to Hell. I mixed two importants moments, but they're not in the timeline of the season 3, with references to episode 1x12: Faith.
In A Parked Car Exhuming Ophelia | @an-android-in-a-tutu Rating: Mature Word Count: 17,741 Main Tags/Warnings: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Human Castiel (Supernatural), Interrogation, Demons, Grief/Mourning, References To: Homelessness, baby eating, Greek Mythology - Freeform, Heaven Politics, Unsafe Sex, Pregnancy, Temporary Character Death, Dubious Consent, Summary: The bunker didn’t lend itself to much natural light, and the utilitarian fixtures in the concrete hallways tended to sap people of their colour even on a good day. Maybe that was why Dean looked so much worse than Sam remembered, as worn as he’d ever seen him. The hand he pulled away from his face was shaking, just slightly, and he dropped it quickly to disguise the tremor, but the detail had already been seared into Sam’s brain. Something was very wrong. "I need you with me on this." Sam hasn't spoken to his brother in over a month, so when he shows up in the middle of the night with a powerful demon in tow, he's concerned. It doesn't take long for him to realize that Dean is keeping secrets again, and that whatever he has hidden behind his teeth has to do with the strange woman who seems all too content to remain bound in their dungeon. The demon with white eyes. All Sam wants is the truth, to figure out who she is, and how she's connected to his brother. But people who ask questions, tend to get answers. And they just may be more than Sam can take. An alternate take on season 9 that replaces the Mark of Cain plot with something much worse.
Rock & Roll and Feathers | @verobatto Rating: Explicit Word Count: 20,172 Main Tags/Warnings: Season 15, canon divergence, rock stars, case fic, rock star!Dean, bodyguard!Castiel, mutual pining Summary: TFW 2.0 defeated Chuck, locking him down in a magic box and exchanging him with Castiel's deal with the Empty. Everything would be perfect if Jack wasn't locked inside another magic box too. The only way to release Jack, now the New God, is to find the key. Rowena knows who has it. His powerful father, a retired sorcerer, who would give anything to those who win his rock and roll contest. That's why Dean will sign up as a rock star, followed by his manager Sam and his bodyguard Castiel. Bad thing is, maybe winning a rock Contest is not the only test they will have on the road to reach that key.
Roadtrip to the End of the World | inkdr0p (AO3) Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 24,813 Main Tags/Warnings: Castiel/Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester, Castiel (Supernatural), Sam Winchester, Bobby Singer, Original Male Character(s), Team Free Will (Supernatural), Sam is a nerd, Dean is a nerd, Cas is an ancient multidimensional being, Road Trips in the Impala (Supernatural), Castiel stops and looks at everything, Las Vegas, Star Trek References, Angst and Feels, Angst and Fluff, Dean works through his experiences of the future in 5x04 The End, Dean Winchester Has a Crush on Castiel, Sam Winchester Knows, Dean Winchester Has PTSD, Sleeping in the Impala (Supernatural), Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester Use Their Words, Wingfic, Winged Castiel (Supernatural), Sam covertly gets Dean and Cas to go on a date, Dean Winchester Deserves to be Happy, Castiel Deserves to be Loved (Supernatural), Season 5, In which I repeatedly compare Cas to a cat, Hunters & Hunting, Slice of Life, Canon Divergent (erases 5x05 "Fallen Idols") Summary: “There’s an apocalypse on, Bobby. In case you forgot.” “No Dean, I didn’t forget. But unless you’ve figured out a way to stop it in the next couple of days, I don’t see why you can’t give yourselves a break. This ain’t a sprint, Dean, it’s a marathon. Besides, last year when we realized just how much had hit the fan I seem to recall you being real quick to---” “Vegas.” “Exactly.” “...The Star Trek Experience.” ---------- OR: Dean's back from the future, Sam's back from his break, and Cas is, well, Cas. As good a time as any to finally take that road trip Dean's been dreaming about since he crawled out of the ground and learned the Apocalypse was a real goddamn thing. All he has to do now is remember how to have fun. Fic takes place in lieu of 5x05 "Fallen Idols"; instead of Paris Hilton the boys are off to the Las Vegas Hilton, former home of the greatest place on earth: The Star Trek Experience.
but i'm singing like a bird 'bout it now | @dirtangeldean Rating: Mature Word Count: 26,976 Main Tags/Warnings: Car Impala (Supernatural), Car Conversations, Aromantic, acespec, AceSpec!Cas, accountability, 15x18 coda, switch POV, Healing Dean Winchester, Eventual Fluff, Eventual Smut, Eventual Happy Ending, First Kiss, Dubcon Kissing(kinda), arospec!Dean, Aromantic Dean Winchester, Fluff and Angst, Light Angst, Post-Episode: s15e18 Despair, Episode: s15e18 Despair - Castiel's Confession Scene, Former Sex Worker Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester Gives Oral Sex, Past Sexual Assault, Mention of Past Sex Work, Dean Winchester's Jacket, Sam Winchester Ships Castiel/Dean Winchester, reader…i have taken liberties, Angelic Grace Kink (Supernatural), Castiel/Dean Winchester First Kiss, Angst with a Happy Ending, Minor Original Character(s) Summary: 15x18 fix-it: Dean uses his one last shot to save Cas and succeeds, the fall out that happens when the unspoken becomes spoken all at once has a happy ending. The eventual conversations of comfort, duty, sacrifice, power, obligation, and love ensue. Communicationnatural. OR Dean can't bare to have Cas leave him. And the Empty allows him to stay. OR Reckoning with a first kiss actually being the opposite of happiness simply due to circumstance.
We're at the lost and found | @mercurialkitty Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 27,019 Main Tags/Warnings: Canon-Typical Violence, Alternate Universe, Canon Divergence, Post-Season/Series 12 AU, season/series 13, Fix-it, mostly broadcast tv level swearing with a few f-bombs, Hunter's Funeral (Supernatural), canon typical angel slurs, Domesticity, will they or won't they, Castiel and Dean Winchester Need to Use Their Words, relationship beginning, like an episode some story arcs are left unresolved, dadstiel Summary: What would the beginning of season 13 have been like if Cas lived and Mary stayed put?
Desideratum and Other Mishaps | @thefandomsinhalor Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 28,075 Main Tags/Warnings: Canon Divergent, Episode: S14E13, Baby Jack Kline, Accidental Baby Acquisition, Protective Dean, Fluff and Angst, Dean Worries About Castiel Summary: In an unexpected turn of events, Castiel and the Winchesters find themselves with a toddler on their hands, when Jack, intending to regain his grace, makes a wish with the Baozhu—the wish-granting pearl—instead of Dean and gets transformed into a young child. Unsure how to fix the situation, and with Mary and Sam aiding the hunters from the other world on a hunt, Dean and Castiel are left alone at the bunker to care for baby Jack, where more than one revelation will unfold.
Dean Winchester and the Belly Button Piercing | @teeparadigm67 Rating: Explicit Word Count: 34,800 Main Tags/Warnings: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Porn With Plot, Domesticity in the Men of Letters Bunker, Dean Winchester has his Belly Button Pierced (And Sammy Doesn't Know), Castiel/Dean Winchester First Kiss, Castiel/Dean Winchester First Time Having Sex, Openly Bisexual Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester is a Tease, Castiel doesn't understand flirting, Idiots in Love, Top Castiel/Bottom Dean Winchester, Porn with Feelings, Canon-Typical Violence, Piercings, Ear Piercings, Pierced Dean Winchester, Navel piercing, Fluff and Smut, Domestic Fluff, Flirty Dean Winchester Summary: Dean Winchester was 23 when he got his belly button pierced. It was during a time in his life when everything felt like it was in turmoil (long before he even really knew what his life being in turmoil truly meant). He never intended to go out and get any piercings—his father would have never allowed it. For 20-something years it had been his best-kept secret… that was until one fateful night when a hunt went wrong and his best friend had to swoop in and help patch him up, catching an eyeful of his elusive secret. Castiel’s infatuation with his best friend took a dangerous turn that night (not that he wasn’t already treading treacherous waters with his feelings towards the man). He had already known that Dean had a piercing, but he had no idea it was still functional, and equally had no idea that a piece of jewellery, Dean’s own slice of quiet rebellion, would have such a profound effect on him. Now Castiel can’t help but want him and his fading grace is doing very little in hiding his… indiscretions. The idea of it slowly drove him insane. And what makes it worse… Castiel was certain Dean was doing it on purpose.
Castiel's Hidden Pussycat | @macy2me Rating: Explicit Word Count: 41,050 Main Tags/Warnings: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alternate Universe, Canon Divergence - Season 13, Castiel Adopts A Cat, Dean Winchester is Bad at Feelings, Dean Winchester in Denial, Castiel's grace is damaged, Boys Being Awkward, Sam Winchester Ships Castiel/Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester is So Done, Canon-Typical Violence, Eventual Smut, Frottage, POV Castiel (Supernatural) Summary: Castiel, angel of the Lord, has been saved by a cat. He didn’t intend to keep it. He didn’t mean for the green-eyed cat to work its way into his heart. It’s becoming a bit of a theme. Yet, here he is, smuggling a cat into the bunker. Cas and Dean have been doing a dance for nine years—circling each other, one step forward, by one step back, changing direction, never getting closer, never too far apart. However, when you throw a cat into the mix, the next move becomes a lot harder to predict.
When Dreams Come True | @avonlady42 Rating: Explicit Word Count: 65,616 Main Tags/Warnings: canon divergent, angst and fluff and smut, Dean Winchester has a wing kink, plot twist, inappropriate use of grace, top castiel/bottom Dean Winchester, explicit sexual content, happy ending, marriage, adoption Summary: After Chuck is defeated, Jack forces Dean and Cas to finally admit their feelings to each other and gives Cas his wings back in the process. They end up getting their happily ever after while Sam settles down with Eileen. Ten years they spend together as a couple, hunting when they need to, but mostly living the domesticated life Dean always wanted and Castiel always wanted him to have. Unfortunately, it all comes crashing down one day when Castiel goes on a hunt and doesn’t make it home. Dean will do whatever it takes to get the love of his life back and ends up getting more than he bargained for when he finds him again. This fic is canon compliant through Season 14 and starts off during the Ouroboros episode S14E14, from there it becomes Canon divergent with some of the rest of Season 14 and Season 15 being the same, but slightly different. S15E20 doesn’t exist and there is an alternate storyline 10 years into the future.
We Are The Music Makers (WIP) | Clairebearer (AO3) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 120,932 Main Tags/Warnings: Alternate Canon Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Hurt Castiel, Action/Adventure, Romance, Sexuality, Domestic Dean Winchester, Human Castiel, Reaper Dean, BAMF Dean, BAMF Castiel, BAMF Sam, Greek Mythology - Freeform, It's all about the souls, Awkward Sexual Situations, Sexual Fantasy, Slow Build, Case Fic, Magic Mirrors, Dark Magic, Demons, Angelic Grace, Mental Health Issues, Trickster Gabriel, Musical References, Pop culture references, Movie spoilers, Fate, Destiny, Free Will, Canon divergent, Cupid - Freeform, Terminal Illness, Top Dean Winchester, Bottom Dean Winchester, Implied/Referenced Homophobia, Dean Winchester is Bad at Feelings, Dean Winchester is Not Heterosexual, Bi-Curious Dean Winchester, Temporary Major Character Death, Angst with a happy ending Summary: Set in the aftermath of seasons 8's epic finale. With Sam's life hanging by a thread Dean is forced to call the only being he knows has the power to help: Death. However, like most impossible things they come with a terrible price and it acts as an hour glass hanging ominously over Dean's head as his life-line burns away like a fuse, a full-time job as a reaper waiting for him. Time is short and the world is bent on destroying itself, so when the shadow of an averted apocalypse threatens to resurface and wipe out everything he has fought so hard to save, Dean must do everything within his power - and more - to stop it. His own feelings be damned... If he can help it.
Far From Heaven: Part Two | @Taymarpigeon Rating: Explicit Word Count: 151,921 Main Tags/Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Angel Castiel (Supernatural), Established Castiel/Dean Winchester, Post-Canon Fix-It, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Heavy Angst, Fluff, Gratuitous Smut, Canon-Typical Violence, Canon Divergent, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Suicide Attempt, Homophobic John Winchester, Abusive John Winchester, Former Sex Worker Dean Winchester, POV Alternating, Top/Bottom Versatile Castiel/Dean Winchester, Possessive Castiel (Supernatural), Possessive Dean Winchester, Extremely Dubious Consent, Dom/sub, BDSM, Risk Aware Consensual Kink, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-con, Consensual Non-Consent, Angelic Possession (Supernatural), Angelic Grace Bonds (Supernatural), Wing Kink, Castiel and Dean Winchester Get Married, Additional Tags in End Note Summary: Castiel is gone and Dean can't move passed it, can't bring himself to stray far from the last place he ever saw his Angel. A place so full of sorrow, yet there is love there too, lingering in the farthest, darkest reaches. Gabriel is done watching Castiel and Dean be martyrs. Jack's fixed up Heaven, all is as it should be, there's no reason these two idiots can't finally have everything they ever wanted. If he intervenes, if Gabriel finally embraces what he was built for in the first place, will it make a difference? Will Cas and Dean finally get their happily ever after? He's not gonna lie, leading three (not so) wise men across the desert was probably easier than this headache will turn out to be. Still, Gabriel maintains that it is possible to lead a horse to water and make it drink. You just gotta know which buttons to push.

I’ll always maintain that while Anna carved out her grace in part to experience the full breadth of emotion and experience free from heaven’s strict control, she did it overall for deliberate ideological reasons (emphasis on the “free from heaven” bit) as opposed to it being an impulsive move fuelled by raw desire. That being said, she did get to fully grow up as a human and so I think certain human things would come very naturally to her, even after she has her grace back, and I definitely think human displays of affection would be one of those things. And even though she’s not an overly mushy person I think she would still really miss how easy it was to give and receive affection from her human family versus her angel family. She would wish she could love them the same way but repress the hell out of that feeling particularly around other angels, for fear of coming on too strong or seeming too unangel-like. I think some moments would still slip through where she can’t help it or doesn’t want to, though, and for instance I think she should have hugged Cas at some point.
Specifically I’m thinking right after the “for the first time I feel” “it gets worse” exchange, where she just looks at him for a moment with a sad, knowing expression and then steps forward and just,, hugs him. And Cas literally does not know what she’s doing at first and asks her in his way why she’s squeezing his vessel with hers and so she explains what a hug is, and that he can hug back if he wants. So he does, kind of stiffly at first until it clicks for him how much he likes this, and how nice it feels, so he ends up holding her tight. And as much as it’s comforting for him it’s a relief for Anna because as much as she’s more worried about the current state of things and the fact that it looks like her poor brother is just careening down more or less the same path she walked years earlier, she’s also missed getting something as simple as a hug so desperately ever since she became an angel again, so she can’t help but let herself have this little moment. For a brief moment she pretends she has a normal family again.

I think I at least relate to Castiel a little too much because of his relationship with free will.
I, like him, went from believing in doing whatever someone (a parent) told me to do, like it was a holy command, to realizing that I truly am the only one who can control my fate.
There is no God.
There is no Mother, no Father.
No one who can tell you who to be and what to do forever.
You truly are on your own.
I, like Castiel, have a love-hate relationship with free will. I ache for it, I want to be rid of it, I love it, I hate it, I want to be told what to do and I want to never hear an order again.
Free will is a larger than life curse, a blessing that has had all of humanity searching for meaning in the shadows of your own existence since the dawn of time. It is the first thing we think about in the morning, it weighs on us with the choices we’ve made and the ones we have not.
We make up rules to protect ourselves from what we are capable of, and we threaten ourselves with the consequences of a creator, a Father, so we don’t have to live with the guilt of them, knowing we’ll be punished later.
When Castiel looked at his siblings, who he’d betrayed over and over with his newfound freedom, and said “Freedom is a length of rope. God wants you to hang yourselves with it,” he was putting into words what I have felt my entire life
How is it fair that we are in charge of choosing who to be? That we do not know now what we will regret later? That we are the ones who make the choices we will look back on in the future?
Castiel’s humanity resides in the fact that the second he discovers free will he fucks up. He makes mistakes. He becomes greedy, and angry, and hateful, and bitter and cruel.
And yet.
And yet, is it any better that what he was doing before? Blindly following the orders of someone he believed had the right and moral authority to command him?
Is it better to follow, and not feel, or to choose, and risk ruination? Or is it unavoidable?
Cas is at his most human when he makes choices not out of logic, but out of love.
When he chooses Dean over God.
When he chooses Jack over the threat of what he could become.
When he chooses Dean again, over and over, against his people, against his God, his Father, his Commander.
I relate to Castiel because he, like me, eventually discovered that free will, like most things, is neither good nor bad, both a blessing and a curse, both easily ignored and inescapable.
He, like me, discovered that, surprisingly enough, the cliché is true, and love truly is a powerful driving force. That while we can never know what we’ll regret, we can only close our eyes and wait, and hold onto the love we have, and hope that one day we look back in fondness, and not grief.

itsmeyn: charles always goes above and beyond for every single fan of his, he tries to take as many pictures and sign as many autographs as possible, but what happened last night was a fucking joke. He doesn't like what I'm writing cause he says that it was just a mistake and that it was fine, but it really isn't, it's so disrespectful and disgusting! He always wants to meet his fans and make them happy only to receive this insanity, him falling AND HURTING HIMSELF because some of you can't fucking wait and be organized like a human being! Charles isn't an animal in a zoo where you race to pet him! He is a human being, he is a son, a brother and a boyfriend! This wasn't just an accident, i have seen these 6 girls multiple times in multiple places! it's so obsessive and so so sick of you to follow him everywhere.... Charles won't speak up because he is Charles and he lives seeing the good in people, but I will tear everything and everyone for his safety, so for you 6 girls you will be hearing from court soon so better prepare a good lawyer you assholes!

It had been quite a week for YN as she was seen hitting a fan after the said fan pushed Charles. YN took this fan and 5 others to court, no one knows on what bases but what has come out is that she has won the case which means that Charles and YN have restraining orders against the group.

I don't care about you and your opinion but don't state it as a fact, no one can do better with these strategies. I hate to keep saying this but when your own fucking team doesn't have the same dream as you it turns to shit. Even if charles is the only one in the car, it's still a team sport, not a one man sport. Fuck you and your tiny ass brain that can never survive one lap in a formula one car, it'll probably explode cause of all the bullshit in it before the first lap anyway. Cas was raised in a white room with only. Saltine crackers for thousands of years and then he was let loose on the. World discovering he was not. Only autistic but gay and his only. Point of reference for human behavior was dean winchester oh my god I’d be so mad. castiel was born in an AirPod case yesterday and his sister was going fall from heaven! Do it! You can kiss men if only you spurn everything you’ve ever known! And everyone he knew was calling her a traitorous wretch. Except for dean winchester who slept with her. AND then dean licked his lips called them thelma and Louise then sauntered directly into cas whil e he squinted into the middle distance trying to figure out what the hell that meant because he’s never seen a movie or experienced desire . So he has to decode dean winchester sentences of ALL things. While figuring out that hes gay and autistic. Dean winchester. Hammers. Now.

And she ends up in RoR universe! I imagine the confusion when out of nowhere, a door appear in the arena, and which led to a a gorgeous restaurant being taken care of by a pre-teen reader. She serves delicious food and drinks, and also tell the RoR gods, humans fighters and Valkyries how she ends up there. And maybe a twist that she can't left her restaurant until she has a reliable guardian, which was a term set by the God or Goddess granting her wish, because she is still a child, and a child wandering around aimlessly is dangerous.
-It had started with an accident, one that took you from your life so early, you were so young, but so selfless for what you had done, saving another.
-When you passed, you had been blessed with the option to have three wishes, anything you wanted, and you couldn’t help but grin, looking so elated despite knowing that you were dead.
-And thus, your three wishes were granted, with one to come in time- but your first two were granted, as you wanted to be like the anime characters you’ve seen, wanting to go to another world, and to own your own restaurant! The third was that you wanted a family, one that kept you safe, doted on you, and loved you, as you had never had that experience before, and you so desperately wanted that.
-Your restaurant was always stocked with everything you needed, including equipment- you never had to go shopping for anything, and upstairs was an apartment, just for you, once again with everything you needed to live comfortably and happy!
-The one downside was that the deity who blessed you with these wishes made it so you were unable to leave until you found a guardian or guardians that would take care of you, as you were still a child.
-Your door appeared all around a place called Valhalla, allowing anyone to enter, gods, valkyries, and humans, and while they had no idea where this mysterious door came from, so many were stunned to see you there, a child.
-Your food was delicious, being unlike anything they had ever had before, and you handled everything, cooking, baking, and serving everyone you came through your door with a bright smile.
-That’s why it was so shocking the day of Ragnarok, before the first fight, your door appeared in the center of the arena. Those who knew the door quickly rushed to the arena, to defend you, stunning many to see gods and humans working together.
-It made them realize that they can get along, they can work together if they would just put their mind to it.
-Those who didn’t know this door approached as well, and soon all fighters for both sides, including the valkyries, questioning those who had defended the door.
-When the crowd walked in, seeing the large but still cozy looking restaurant, many of the newbies were stunned- it’s not what they had been expecting.
-You came around the corner, seeing the crowd and you beamed brightly, “Welcome to Sunshine!” seeing you there- seeing a child, many were stunned.
-Loki ran over, throwing his arms around you, spinning you around, “Y/N!!” you squealed with delight, enjoying the embrace as you beamed, “Hi Loki- you want your usual today?” he snuggled you even harder, “Of course I do~~”
-Zeus approached you next and you smiled warmly at him, bowing your head, “Welcome to Sunshine- I’m Y/N- the owner and cook!” he was stunned, hearing this, “But- but you’re so young!” your cheeks puffed up, pouting, showing your age, “I’m thirteen- I can do this!”
-Hearing this, hearing how young you were made many of them grow concerned for you, like Adam, who ruffled your hair gently, “Are you safe here? Do you have a guardian?” You shook your head to his second question, “I am safe here- this place is like a neutral zone so nobody can hurt me, and I don’t have a family if that’s what you mean.”
-You faintly heard boss music in the background, unsure of where it was coming from as many started to exude an aura of immediate adoption as you went around, giving out hot towels, ice water, and menus for those who didn’t know what they wanted, and you got to work.
-You were a pro in the kitchen, easily able to whip up meals and desserts, serving everything with a smile. The food was delicious, everything tasted so fresh, so comforting, it made many think of their younger days, of when they didn’t have to fight all the time.
-Many looked around the room, seeing gods and humans and valkyries sitting together, enjoying their meals together, it was surreal, seeing once again that peace was an option, if they were to work together.
-You were like a child when you got to step out of the door, after so many of them shouted that they were adopting you, making you collectively their child, which you didn’t mind, and you ran around the arena, having fun, finally being free.
-You told them how you had died, and that the restaurant was one of your wishes, as well as going to another world- but your last wish was to have a family, and the deity made it so you couldn’t leave your safe space unless if you had a family, which you had now.
-They were all happy to see you so happy, as now you were free and able to do as you pleased in this world, your new home, but you were still going to run your restaurant- as that’s what made so many happy, which made you happy, seeing people enjoying a good meal!

A Fic About Dean's 45th Birthday
~3k words | slight angst with a happy ending
Tumblr media
Dean never says anything about his birthday.
Sam has weird hang ups about holidays like Halloween and Christmas, and January 24th isn't just Dean's birthday—it was Jess's birthday too. So Dean's never made a fuss. He's asked for Christmas, but he's never asked to have his birthday celebrated. There are many years he can think of where he wouldn't have even wanted to celebrate his birthday anyway—where the idea of it would have felt hollow.
He's said before in front of Sam and Bobby, "I don't like being singled out at birthday parties, much less by God" and he figures maybe Sam has always remembered that, and probably told Cas too (if Cas ever asked).
Right. It all makes sense.
So he has no reason to expect Sam to realize that Dean actually wants to celebrate his birthday now—that he has wanted to for... the last three years, ever since Mrs. Butters insisted they throw a birthday party for Sam.
He can't stop thinking about Mrs. Butters saying they shouldn't celebrate Dean's birthday—or... rather, that she thought he wouldn't want to celebrate his birthday because he's old... and just... fuck that.
The truth is, the older Dean gets, the more his birthday feels... important. For one, he's officially spent more time not in Hell now than he spent in it. For another, 45 just feels... important somehow. It isn't 50—but it's another half a decade? He thought he'd be dead by now (well—he supposes he has been—but it hasn't stuck yet) and he doesn't know—it just feels like... like something to celebrate. He's 45 years old, and he isn't dead. He's alive, and he's happy, and things have been good lately.
He keeps thinking about it every year that passes better than the last. He keeps wondering every year. He keeps hoping every year—even though he knows it isn't rational when he hasn't said anything. He hasn't asked. He hasn't told anyone that anything's changed. He can't expect a birthday party if he doesn't communicate that he wants one. At the same time, asking for one feels weird. It feels... whiney. Nobody else is asking.
Dean's done birthday meals for Sam the past couple of years without Sam asking (stooped to making a caesar salad with grilled chicken for Sam's birthday last year with minimal grumbling) but it doesn't seem to make much of an impression. Sam is just... not much of a birthday guy. He's quiet, and to be honest, Dean's pretty sure he prefers celebrating with Eileen if he's going to do anything. She usually swings into town around Sam's birthday to take him out drinking. Well. He'll be celebrated whether he likes it or not—at least a little—at least with a meal.
Dean doesn't know when to celebrate Cas. He's asked before and Cas said something about being created before humans or their methods of marking the passage of time existed and... yeah, okay. Dean's favorite local diner sells good pie, and has a nice selection of milkshakes, including a PB&J flavored one. For the last few years, once a year, on September 18th, Dean tries to either take Cas out for one of those milkshakes, or pick one up for him. The date just feels right.
Dean puts the most effort in for Jack, with a full on cake ever since Mrs. Butters. Sometimes, he adds a bag full of Three Musketeers candy bars. Cas and Sam certainly don't raise a fuss. They all silently agree that the kid should get the birthday experience even if the rest of them are too old and jaded to care.
42, 43, 44... every time January 24th rolls around, it's always just like any other day. He thinks maybe when he turned 43, Sam might have wandered into The Dean Cave at night when Dean was watching a movie with Cas and sat for a while, then belatedly said, "Oh. Uh, happy birthday, man," while staring down at his cell phone. That was it.
Dean had brushed him off with a grunt—probably only reinforced for Sam and Cas both that Dean doesn't care just like they don't seem to care. So it isn't rational. It isn't fair. It isn't reasonable for Dean to get upset. But maybe it starts to sting a little, okay? And yeah that makes Dean feel a little embarrassed—sue him. He hasn't said anything... and he shouldn't. It's stupid. It doesn't matter. Mrs. Butters said he's too old for birthdays.
Still, despite his best efforts, Dean goes to bed on January 23rd 2024 wondering if someone will remember—if maybe, this time, they'll do something... because... he's 45. Something simple is all he imagines. They go out to eat, or... someone else makes breakfast (or tries). Sam give him a stupid gag gift. Cas picks up a pie.
As Dean falls asleep, he stupidly imagines the library decorated with a tiny "Happy Birthday" banner. He imagines a stack of pancakes for breakfast with a stupid candle in them. He imagines party hats and Rice Krispie treats. He imagines someone just... wishing him a happy birthday. Just... acknowledge it—that he's 45. That it's important.
Tumblr media
Dean wanders into the library in the morning and it's empty and dark. He goes into the kitchen, and Sam is illuminated by his laptop screen. Dean flicks on the light and Sam barely flinches. "Hey," He says, keeping his gaze on his work... and that's it. That's how January 24th 2024 is going to be.
Dean shakes himself out of it—doesn't reply—just wanders over to the coffee pot to pour in grounds and get a drip brew going. Who knows if Sam has even slept—he's been deeply fixated on a cataloguing project for two weeks straight now. It's entirely possible he pulled an all-nighter. He might not even know what day it is anyway.
Dean opens the fridge and drags out the bacon. He considers toast too, but then decides that... well—he can celebrate his own birthday at least by making it special himself. He goes to the pantry and pulls out a boxed pancake mix he picked up who knows how long ago.
Just add milk and eggs.
Dean eyes the half-burnt-out pack of birthday candles in the junk drawer, stored there last May 18th. He closes the drawer, rolling his eyes at himself, and flips his pancakes as they start to bubble.
When breakfast is finished cooking (enough for Sam and Cas and Jack too, of course) Dean makes himself a plate and plops down across from Sam at the kitchen table.
"Big stack of pancakes," Sam murmurs—and Dean could swear there's a vaguely judgmental lilt to it.
Dean's eyes burn, which is stupid. He cuts through all five pancakes and shoves a huge bite in his mouth, staring at Sam across the table stonily as he chews.
Sam glances up and makes a bitch face, but doesn't say anything, returning his focus to his laptop
"What are you doing that's so damn interesting anyway?" Dean grumbles.
"Still cataloguing. Actually, Eileen is coming over to help me. We're gonna drag that last shelf of books into the library from the archive room and scan it all—finally have everything digitized."
Dean's heart sinks. It's gotta be at least 1,000 books.
Sam gets up from his chair. "I was gonna wheel everything in from down there and stack it on the tables before she gets here. You wanna help me?"
"Uhh..."
"Right," Sam scoffs lightly, making his way over to the coffee pot. "No problem."
"Look—I'm glad you enjoy that shit," Dean poorly pronounces through a mouthful of chewed food, stabbing another bite before he's finished this one. "Because someone has to—but moving and cataloguing books is the last thing I wanna do on my birthday."
It slips out without Dean really meaning for it to. He feels like the pancakes he's eaten are crowding his throat. He grabs his glass of water and swallows quickly, watching Sam over the rim of his glass.
"Oh," is all Sam says though—glancing at Dean, then his watch, before pouring his coffee into a mug. "Uh... happy birthday."
Dean looks down at his plate. "Thanks."
Sam clears his throat unusually loudly. "You know—I'm gonna be busy, but maybe... you ought to make a day of it," He suggests suddenly, leaning against the counter with his mug in a way that does not look comfortable or natural.
Dean immediately smells deceit, the hairs on the back of his neck rising. "What do you mean?"
Sam opens his mouth then closes it—shrugs. "You know—go out on the town... see if Cas or Jack wants to do something together. I mean—I can't go—can't back out on Eileen, but..." He interrupts himself with a sip of coffee.
Dean narrows his eyes. "Are you... trying to get me out of the bunker right now?"
"What? No!" Sam has always been terrible at lying to Dean—always seems too indignant. "I just—maybe you should celebrate. You're like, 46 or something, right?"
"45!" Dean's voice goes up a whole octave, suspicion momentarily forgotten.
"Whatever," Sam waves him off. "Go get a nice drink somewhere or go see a movie."
Dean glowers.
Sam stares back at him, before opening his mouth and looking up at the ceiling. "Okay, fine. Me and Eileen uh... need the library."
Dean cocks his head to the side a little, processing, before the realization hits. A big grin spreads over his face. "Sammy, you sly dog..." Dean chuckles. "I know what this is."
"Uh...?"
"Yeah you and Eileen are gonna catalogue some books, huh? Heheh..."
Sam scowls and rolls his eyes. "Gross, Dean."
Dean raises his hands in surrender. "Message received. I will uh... clear outta here..." Dean gets up, collecting his empty plate. "And... make myself scarce until say....?" He looks at Sam expectantly.
Sam looks at the floor, the wall, the ceiling—anywhere but Dean, before saying, "...6:30?"
"I'll make it 7:00!" Dean declares, setting his dishes in the sink then striding out.
Tumblr media
Jack turns out eager to go do something in town, which bolsters Dean's spirits. When they go looking for Cas though, and find him brushing his teeth in the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist, he says gruffly, "I have judo practice."
Cas has run through a stream of contact sports over the last three years, and so far, he's stuck with judo the longest. He's very good at it, and he takes it very seriously. It's kind of funny but also kinda... well—adorable at the same time.
"Why the fuck did you take a shower right before judo practice?"
Cas spits into the sink. "There is a man attending now whose gi is off white. Off white, Dean. Not because that is the color of the fabric, but because he never seems to bathe or wash his clothing."
Dean stares at him.
Cas shakes his head, seething at his own reflection in the mirror. "I know what he's doing... It's a strategy. He and I are enemies... and I will defeat him without stooping to his level."
"You are bathing before practice as a 'fuck you' to a smelly guy?" Dean clarifies. Suddenly Dean feels offended. "Wait a minute—how come this is the first time I'm hearing about this?"
"He's new," Cas grumbles. "He just moved here, and he smells, and he tries to tell the instructors they're doing things wrong. He's annoying and I hate him. Defeating him at this practice is very important, Dean. I'm sorry. Perhaps I could join you later."
"But it's Dean's birthday," Jack pipes up.
Dean looks at Jack, surprised, but also... touched.
Jack gives Cas a pleading look. Cas looks... put upon. He's giving Jack an almost... warning look, which is weird, but... bad day for Cas, maybe.
"No no—it's fine," Dean waves Cas off, and puts on an excited smile on for Jack. "You know what, Jack? All this means is that the two of us can go fishing."
"I hate fishing..." Cas grumbles.
"Exactly," Dean says. "So you won't miss out. Join us after your practice or whatever if you want. Sam wants the bunker to himself 'cause Eileen's coming over."
Cas tilts his head at him in confusion. "What? What does that have to do with anything?"
Dean gives him a look.
Cas stares back, then realization comes over his face. "...Oh," He says, glancing between Dean and Jack. "Uh... yes... so. Perhaps I'll join you after... fishing."
Tumblr media
Jack seems eager to do a lot of activities. It makes Dean feel kind of good that Jack seems to appreciate birthdays, because Dean is the one who made sure they kept celebrating Jack's.
They pack sandwiches and eat them by the river while they fish, and then Jack says he wants to see a movie so they go to the theater, and even though it doesn't matter because it's all the same cash at the end of the day, Jack insists on buying the popcorn when Dean reaches for his wallet.
They still haven't heard from Cas by the time they get out of the movie. His practice should have ended hours ago.
"....What if we go see the world's largest ball of twine?" Jack asks. So okay. They do. Then after that, they go play mini-golf. Dean keeps checking his phone, hoping maybe Cas will call or text for their whereabouts and join them, but a message never comes.
Dean feels not only a little stung, but also kind of worried. He ends up texting Cas.
Dean: Just checking in.
Cas replies about 20 minutes later.
Cas: I apologize, Dean. Sam has roped me into actual research.
However much he doesn't want it to, it puts a damper on things—makes it hard for Dean to keep smiling. Sam just... didn't want he and Jack underfoot? Is that it? He thought they'd... get in the way? It kind of offends Dean. He and Jack are both perfectly competent at researching and Sam knows that. Dean just doesn't like this kind of project. At worst, he would have stayed out of the way—holed up in The Dean Cave or in his room to watch movies. If Sam's goal was getting them out of the bunker so they wouldn't bother him, it doesn't feel fair. It seems... mean.
Dean's throat feels tight. He puts his phone on silent before they get to the burger joint in the evening—tells himself he's jumping to conclusions—he isn't being fair.
At least... at least Jack is having a good time—smiling ear to ear. It's good to see him happy—especially after that upsetting stint as God. The responsibility of it... the weight... thinking about it had twisted Dean's stomach in knots some nights so bad he could hardly breathe, even if he never spoke to anyone about it.
Tumblr media
Dean pulls into the garage right about 7PM, determined not to let any disappointment or hurt toward Sam or Cas show—reminding himself again that it's his own fault that they didn't know this day was important to him.
He decided on the drive home he'll say something about celebrating birthdays from now on... around late April, right before Sam's birthday so no one catches on that he's hurt. That'll... it'll make it easier to get it out anyway, Dean thinks—that this is something he wants—if it's first in the context of Sam's birthday instead of his own. He'll say he'd like to start making celebrating everyone's birthday a habit—say it's important to him. He'll ask, and plan a party for Sam, then they'll do one for Jack, then Cas... then, when Dean turns 46... maybe they can celebrate Dean's birthday all together then. Everyone being celebrated... it just feels right. It's something Dean just... wants.
He's also cooled off on Sam—convinced himself that Sam probably just didn't want Dean to feel obligated to help on his birthday while Sam was determined to be a bore—thought he'd have more fun getting out of the house. He just wishes Sam had the sense not to rope Cas in too.
Jack pushes open the stairs that lead down into the map room, and Dean nearly jumps out of his skin as he hears a very loud chorus of voices exclaiming, "SURPRISE!"
Jack grins widely then, and says, "Come on, Dean!" He races to the bottom of the stairs, motioning for Dean behind him.
Dean can hardly believe it when the library comes into view.
His family is there. Not just Sam and Cas, but Eileen, and Rowena, Donna, Jody, Garth and Bess and their boys, Claire and Patience and Alex. Some of them are wearing party hats, others just smiling. Donna scoops him into a hug first, then Jody.
Dean is overwhelmed by the attention as he trades hugs with so many of their friends. His eyes are drawn to actual decorations. There are streamers hang from the ceiling, attached to brown balloons. There's a banner attached to a wall that says "It Is Your Birthday!"
"Alright—so I left Cas in charge of the decorating while I went to get the cake," Sam admits as he walks up and places a cup of punch in Dean's hand.
"I already told you—the balloons are the color of Scooby Doo!" Cas scowls.
"Oh yeah? And why are they so under-filled?" Sam says back, but he's laughing.
"They're perfect, Cas," Dean chokes, looking at all the effort Cas put in—overwhelmed.
A cake in the shape of Scooby Doo's face is laid out on one of the tables, surrounded by paper party plates and napkins with The Scooby Gang on them. There are... there are actual wrapped presents sitting on the the table further back. Like... a lot of presents.
"You... you did all of this for me?" Dean asks, looking at Cas and Sam.
"We lied so we could stay here and prepare," Cas admits. "Jack was supposed to keep you out of the house while we worked."
Dean glances at Jack then, who beams.
"I'll be honest though. I really thought you had me figured out this morning in the kitchen, Dean," Sam shakes his head, grinning.
Dean's eyes well up with tears. "You're still a bad liar," He croaks.
He doesn't even know if it's him or someone else who starts it, but suddenly they're all in a group hug.
"Happy 45th birthday, Dean."
"You deserve it."

I am still thinking about Castiel walking out on Dean during the divorce arc... After he apologized, after he held his tounge because I fucking know cas would have had some shit to say after Dean got Jack killed (and yes he did. nothing will ever change my mind on that)
But mostly I'm thinking about what was going through castiels head when he left. What emotions was he feeling? I'm sure he was sad, devastated even. But I wonder if he felt some tiny, distant, and undoubtedly dreadful inkling of relief at the thought of never seeing Dean again. Not because he was angry with Dean (which he had every right to be) but because not seeing Dean would have meant that he wouldn't be able to achieve true happiness
And not achieving true happiness at that point would have meant the empty leaving him alone, which would have in turn meant getting to live longer.
It would have meant getting to feel Dean's presence on earth for longer. It would have meant getting to admire humanity for longer. It would have meant getting to love Dean for longer
Even if it meant he would have only loved him from a far, Cas would be okay with that. He wouldn't be happy but atleast he'd be alive
Because god, at least he could still love him.
Maybe Cas left because he didn't want to be forgiven. Maybe he knew that forgiveness would leave him crawling back for more.
And the deal he'd made had bound his wrists in chains that read "more is less"

Imagine you being the first person Soldier Boy goes after when he breaks out
* soldier boy x reader imagine under the gif :)
Tumblr media
What happens when someone has accomplished everything everyone would love to catch a glimpse of?
Booze, drugs, and frivolous sex. Especially when said person is trying to feel like a human again. Especially when said person is seen as above a person, as something (never someone) closer to some kind of ancient god, as an entity.
“Another night,” you let out an empty laugh, observing your reflex on the television staring back at you: not a day older, not a wrinkle, not a grey hair, not an aching bone, no sign of flesh rooting like it should do. Untouchable by the worst creation: time. “Same old me.”
Heroes are just heroes because they don't have time to be anything else. Any other being with spare time would become, well, just like Y/N. A fucking mess surrounded by empty pizza boxes and a TV that speaks louder than any person ever did.
Being a god must be so lonely, you wonder to no other than yourself. It's even more solitary when you're eternal, and everything you've ever loved is temporary.
Drowning in self pity like most days, you sigh and turn on the tv— quickly your reflex was replaced by an equal, which was even more tearfully. Homelander and Starlight putting on a show with pageant smiles and two pairs of eyes reflecting all the violence that humans learned how to adore.
“I can't hide it anymore!” the twisted superman says excitedly, making you arch an eyebrow. “Me and Starlight are together!”
Even though the woman — who leaked innocence and power anytime she popped up on your television — starts the kiss, you can't help but notice the slightly disgust in the corner of her eyes, or the quiet anger on the edge of her mouth.
Women still don't have all the power they should have. You can only hope Starlight be a rebel. She certainly has the bravery to do it. Too used to sit and smile to idiots. Someday they won't even see when she comes for their asses.
Just like you, couple decades back that never look bad on you. Same woman, but with a little more of... Courage? No, not really. Hope. Some more hope that built up courage, isn't it always about this sneaky hope?
But now all your friends are dead and it doesn't matter in the long run. That's the thing about time, in all it's relativeness, surrounding and rushing through people complaining or praising its pace, it tends to show what lingers. Usually not much, mostly memories. They are like a fever that should kill you, but it doesn't have mercy so you remain breathing and suffering with all the reminiscence.
You, a lonesome hero who lives in delusion on old time's memories, the woman who never moves on from her lover's death.
You'd turn off the tv show, but then you'd be alone with yourself in this house haunted by the past. So, let it be it, a whole ass scoop about #Starlander or whatever their name was.
Destiny, orchestrated by a real God who isn't in the tv nor wore a cape, has other plans. As usual.
It doesn't even take a second to discover which ship name the superheroes were using before your door was on the floor with no further warning. Nothing, but a scarlet light strong enough to bend metal. Not a clue but the smell of burning, just like, like...
Mornings, just like morning when he'd try to use his power to cook toasts and accidentally put the kitchen on fire because he was too stubborn not to do it. Or just like the accent of incinerated bodies when he was at war and could hide under the excuse of saving the country to be merciless.
Soldier Boy, your cruel savior. Standing at your door like a mad man.
But, that isn't possible. Soldier Boy was dead. You cried in way too many radio interviews to consider otherwise. You mourned, and everyone made a feast out of that pain. Your teammates disbanded. You kept looking for him for years before accepting that he wasn't here anymore. Everyone applauded his bravery, and then they never talked about him again. Just like any other dead hero.
He couldn't be alive. He can't be alive.
Yet, your mind, always messed up with those hopeful perspectives, whispers to you that there was never a body. It takes and twists the facts into saying, take a other step, he could be there. It makes your head dizzy. It makes you raise and walk towards the entrance with no door. Your calamitous heart is so filled up with hope as his glass used to be with whiskey and his body with drugs, overflowing in every sense. And you feel like a human at the simply chance of seeing the man you loved again. Even though this man was a monster, even when hurt you many times in that rose-colored golden age— the worst pain he ever put you through was dying. Even gods have their addictions, and he was yours.
Your steps are slow, your eyes watching as you pray for him to be seen. Doesn't take long but certainly take much. There, in the midst of brutality, he stands. The man you loved to adore. The hero with a villain mind. Soldier Boy.
Your eyes spark like stars with the tears. All you want to do is come closer, like always. His beard makes him look even older, and his hair is longer than you've ever thought you'd see (he'd probably call it hippie and comments that would be considered.. Well, Twitter certainly wouldn't like it). But his naked body is the same, just like his green eyes, just like his lips. Do they still taste like blood? Does making love to him still like a combat?
You used to believe that living forever was a punishment, but you'd do it all again just to get to this moment.
You study him carefully, trying to convince yourself not even this joy could make up for the fact that he was presumably dead for decades. All the sleepless nights, all the ache, all the torture you put others through to get information to save him, all the love you wasted on strangers to try to get ride off him.
All is washed away when you saw him, but the question was still hanging around in the air: how was he here?
Soldier Boy is quiet, more quiet than he could ever be with his smart mouth. You didn't know how to do this, do act rationally when he was around. This was the man you'd get your hands bloody for. How is there any room left for rationality? And he is there, right in front of you.
Your eyes lock with him like it was the night you two fucked in that Oklahoma jail when he took your virginity. Your body still burning at the idea of coming closer. Your hands shaking in anticipation like it it was the first time he touched you. You just wanted to take him home, you just wanted to kiss him, to spread your legs to him, to let him fuck you until you forget you were anything but his. That same fervor, that same man. When you love forever, you spend most of your time wanting to die. But he was reborn, and suddenly eternity didn't seem like enough. He was back.
You are scared to open your mouth, to say a word and watch him dissipate like a hallucinative smoke. Therefore, you keep quiet to allow your body to speak instead.
You take one step towards him, unsure if he'd throw you across the room with his power or if he'd pull you into a kiss so hard it would make your lips bleed. Who cares? Red was always your very favorite color anyway.
Soldier Boy's chest shines a little, and you're ready to strike back and punch him. But the closer you are, the less his power shines.
You're my Achilles heel. Recall his naked words back then, and how they always came after you sucked his cock or when you dared to leave him. Recall how messed up you two were, but you always came back to each other. Despite all the shit, Soldier was the one who was as fucked up as you were. All that ache and he was still yours, and you were his.
Solder Boy is alive. He's alive!
One step. You were right in front of him.
When he speaks, it's just one word.
“Y/N.”
And you'd burn the whole world for him to say it.

alright sorry to go on a supernatural rant in 2023 but...
it makes me feel insane.
Not to beat a dead horse or anything but like destiel will be it for me. Nothing else will ever compare to it. Like a man is raised by an absent father- a father who demands to be obeyed without question. A father who praises guilt, who tells the man that he is his brother's keeper. That he is responsible for all of his actions and those actions affects on others. The weight of the world is on his shoulders and he must bear it alone.
This man, the one that is single-handedly trying to save himself along with everyone he's ever crossed paths with, fails. He sacrifices himself to save his brother and he dies. He's sent to hell, a land of eternal punishment. 'No less than I deserve' he probably thinks.
But then he is saved. Not because of anything he's done. Not because of a deal he or his brother or his father has made. He is saved by a cosmic being of unfathomable power because of his nature which has been deemed by THEE Abrahamic God as being fundamentally good. The man who has hated himself his whole life for not being enough, not doing enough, is declared to be good.
And he feels guilty as hell. He didn't deserve this. Of those hundreds of people he's helped over the years...one of them...ANY of them is better than him. If he's God's strongest soldier then God is going to lose. He is going to fail God just like he failed his own father.
The man spirals while the heavenly power that saved him watches from afar. The power understands the man. He understands what it's like to hold Father to the highest esteem. He understands what it's like to blindly follow orders, hoping for the best. He also understands that the man has the brightest hope-filled soul he has ever seen.
So the power decides to help, and to do so he breaks away from the rest of heaven's contingency. He grows into his name- Castiel. The shield of God (I am not joking that is what Castiel means), created to protect humanity. AND become a pair with the Michael Sword- the man who believes he is unworthy- DEAN.
Through the years- DECADES- there's ups and downs. Divots and cracks in the Almighty's plans. But nothing they can't handle. They grow close and become more than allies in the fight against ghastly horrors beyond comprehension, they become best friends.
They have wild west movie marathons in the basement room designated as Dean's own "Fortress of Deanitude". They hang out late at night at crappy diners eating crappy pie. They go out cruising the town. They listen to the same music. They play pranks on each other. They learn about and remember each other's interests.
Their relationship grows deeper.
They fight. They lie. They attempt to kill each other. They raise a son together. They try to mentor a daughter. They leave. They come back. They mourn. They celebrate.
Together.
Two beings- one human, one angel- who were alone- whose defining characteristic was who their fathers were- prove that it's possible to break free from predestination, from circumstance. Their love, first as friends, then as something more, is as strong as the force that binds the universe- stronger, even.
And then they die.
Separately. Both convinced that the one thing they've wanted, the unnamed thing they've been fighting for, is the one thing they can't have. Because their fathers said so.
Despite everything, in the end, their fathers won. Dean died on the job he couldn't quit from an accident he couldn't help. Cas died obeying the first and most important commandment his Father gave him- to love and protect humanity.
THAT story is what I will never be able to get over. Not mentioning the gothic Americana aesthetic, the clear Protestant 'for by faith' message, the criticism of hyper-masculinity, the exploration of the 'American Dream'.....

Ranting about supernatural because I hate this show so so much (I’m so so obsessed with it to the point where it’s concerning) and I’m on season 6 episode 20 “the man who would be king” and can I just say how incredibly annoying the boys are! Like can you maybe hear cas out maybe! His reasons for doing these things aren’t malicious or demonic. He is fighting a war in heaven which they couldn’t give to shits about and now they are gonna be mad because he was MANIPULATED by crowley (I love the man but still) like can they use their brains for one moment. And I feel this may come off like I hate Sam and dean and I do not in any way they are very complex characters with trauma and trust issues but cas has done everything for them. He was trying to save them. He didn’t know the outcome. Like Sam and dean have never made a mistake before. Because I remember a couple seasons ago where Sam was going crazy gorging on demon blood because he thought he could do good with that power! So why be so hypocritical and get mad at cas in the way they did. And can we just talk about how broken cas looked when they trapped him in the holy fire! Like Sam said to him did you bring me back without a soul on purpose and his eyes god! Like in what world would castiel who saved you both from hell do that purposely! It was already hard enough to save dean it was a group project in a way he didn’t have help with Sam! And cas is also doing all of this because he thinks its what god wants. He is so blinded by his faith again because he got brought back to life. He had the idea that he was brought back for this reason and chuck did absolutely nothing because all he wants is drama and trauma for the collective and not caring about how his kids feel! Castiels faith breaks my heart because no one could understand it. Dean couldn’t and Sam couldn’t. Castiel has been an angel since the beginning it’s not so easy to give up everything you’ve ever known even when you know that it might not be the right thing. Was it easy for dean to see his father the way everyone else saw John. No. So why can’t it be difficult for cas. They truly never give cas a break. And yes I’m a major destiel shipper. But the way dean acts towards cas sometimes makes me so enraged. But this “breakup” dean looked heartbroken. Castiel had lied to him. Him of all people. The man who he had a profound bond with. He just wanted cas to ask for help and cas didn’t because he doesn’t do that. He’s never been not capable before things have never been this difficult for him before. And when you look at what castiel did there was truly nothing wrong with it. He was blinded and manipulated and he didn’t want all of the shit they endured to stop the apocalypse to be for nothing. He didn’t go to dean because he saw dean living a normal life he saw him getting out and he wanted to respect that. How could castiel have known dean wasn’t happy in that life. Castiel isn’t very good with human emotions and his thinking is very black and white while the winchesters have shades of gray thinking. So how is it fair to blame cas for all of it. I’m sorry about this rant i just feel so much about this! Like castiel is my favorite fictional character of all time and I wish I could’ve teleported into the show and been his lawyer because no one would listen to him no one ever does. I love all of them very very much but it would be dumb to think castiel doesn’t deserve better. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk about castiel. It may happen again

i need to know where and how and why the concept of Free Will in supernatural has been erased... like... the whole point of the show is that humans DO have free will! like... that literally causes All The Problems for Chuck in telling his preferred story! He really, seriously leans into it in early seasons!
Chuck's Story doesn't preempt human Free Will! It USES it! He creates Situations™ where he knows what his "characters" would choose! He pushes them into making the choices they do! THAT IS THE POINT!
But then they start seeing more and more behind the layers of curtains! They get bigger and bigger glimpses of what makes their universe tick, open more doors to different parts of existence and still CHOOSE every time to stay in the fight, to not just lay down and give in to the story Chuck spends 15 seasons trying to force them into!
And I appreciate the concept of Castiel "inventing" free will for himself, but he literally did not! He learned it from watching Dean, and figured out how to apply it to himself! It's literally the point of his entire character arc, from following heaven's orders and believing fully in the righteousness of his mission from God, to his disillusionment and increasing curiosity and care for humanity in general and Dean in particular! And he goes through hell! and Purgatory! and the Empty! literally and metaphorically! over and over again! as he GROWS his own identity and learns to make his own choices!
BUT HE DIDN'T FUCKING INVENT FREE WILL!
DEAN (and Sam, and every other HUMAN character in the story!) ALWAYS HAD FREE WILL FIRST!
like... why does a lot of fandom seem to want to erase this fundamental aspect of the story and hand the only agency in the narrative to Cas? Basically erasing everything he actually struggled through to grow into that?
Especially when the final season is essentially Chuck's attempt to break their own belief in their own free will?! And he almost succeeds! BUT ALSO! He is COUNTING ON THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR FREE WILL TO ENACT HIS FINAL STORYLINE.
ugh it just... sucks all the importance of any of the characters' arcs to just say they never had a choice in anything, that none of them were ever "real" enough to have made their own choices at all. I personally find it a horrifying take on the entire narrative.
And yet... i see it stated constantly as an undeniable fact of the story. like i get we all made jokes about this during s15, but... yikes

No because why am I scared of being made fun of for loving these men when Destiel is probably the most beautiful thing ever created.
An angel pulls a righteous man from hell and heals his wounds and is so overcome with this triumph that he screams DEAN WINCHESTER HAS BEEN SAVED so loud that he awakens fallen angels. He rebuilds this man from dust. The man is scared of Castiel, they don’t trust each other, but they need each other—the man begs the angel to see why Heaven, why God’s plan is corrupt and the angel should trust him. Against nature, breaking from the script, against God, his Father—the angel rebels. The angel rips out the part of him that serves Heaven all for this man and only because he asks. Only because now he’s starting to feel, and angels don’t feel.
What’s coming isn’t an easy task—the man considers giving himself up but the angel won’t let him, beating him unconscious while yelling I rebelled for this? And still, when the day comes, the angel dies for him. The angel attacks his own brothers for this man, is incinerated instantly, and never gave it a second thought.
After the angel is resurrected, they spend years trying to fix everything for each other and almost always do it wrong. They are eventually sent to purgatory together, and the man spends every waking moment praying to his angel. He could’ve escaped, he could’ve been angry at the angel for his misdoings, but he stayed, ripping flesh and killing anything in his way to get to the angel. But he doesn’t understand—the angel, upset, says they’re after me, Dean. I avoid you to protect you. The man won’t listen. He can’t. He pulls the angel to the exit but their hands slip right there, on the precipice. And the man is so distraught that he tells himself he’d let go by accident, but we know this isn’t true. The angel wanted to stay, wanted to feel punishment. The angel saved the righteous man and stayed behind.
But they can’t be kept apart can they?
The angel finds his way back, like always, and Dean is seeing his face everywhere. Dean blames himself. It’s easier than thinking his angel wanted to stay. It’s easier than being abandoned.
Heaven isn’t happy with this angel—this silly thing that gave up its innate purpose and programming all for a human—so they attempt to rewire him, resorting to lobotomy as a way to force him into conforming. They create infinite copies of his human and force him to kill each one, testing his loyalties. And after all this, after being turned into a mindless soldier through torture, it only takes one thing to break the connection. Dean, on his knees, saying I need you.
And this does not fix everything. Now the angel is desperate to undo his wrongs, searching for ways to repay him; so desperate that he misplaces his trust and is irreparably damaged, intimately violated by God’s Scribe. His grace, every part of his angelic traits, is stolen from him, literally ripped from his throat before the Scribe sends all angels plummeting to the Earth. And now the angel is an entirely new species—a human, soft and vulnerable, with nothing to his name—a prime target of angry, wingless angels.
There is only one thing he can do. He can call his human, beg for help, but it’s not going to come quickly. He has to decide between eating and warding himself from his murderous siblings. He virtuously refuses to steal or hurt anyone. He just wants to be safe. He trusts the wrong person and, seconds away from being saved by his human, is stabbed through the heart. Although his brother is injured, Dean caresses his angel’s face and sobs, insisting that the entity inside his brother’s body fix Cas despite how it will hurt the entity and likely put Dean’s brother at risk. It doesn’t matter. Then they go home, and the angel feels safe for the first time as a human.
But nothing lasts forever. The entity inside Sam is anxious, insecure around Cas, and so Dean asks the angel to leave. For probably the first time, Castiel feels intense sadness. Betrayal. Grief. Stress. And it’s because of his human, the one human he was attempting to make everything up to before. Well, apparently he hadn’t done well enough. The angel leaves, still desperate for cash and food, resorting to sleeping in the storeroom of a gas station to stay warm.
The angel has to protect himself from enemies, stealing angelic grace just to keep going. At the same time, Dean takes on the mark of Cain and slowly loses sanity. The angel earns a league of likeminded angels that believe in him, and it finally looks like maybe he can do things on his own again. Naturally, this can’t last for long—his allegiance to this dangerous, marked human is too risky for any angels to trust him.
And his allegiance is tested, but holds strong. Dean can tear the angel to pieces and he’ll still lay there on the floor, unwilling to harm him, and Dean will walk away knowing he could’ve killed Cas but didn’t. Couldn’t.
Over and over, they fight together or they fight each other and it never ends any different. They stick together. They get angry about how the other is acting. And they stay, because leaving just isn’t an option.
The next time the angel dies, the righteous man isn’t the same. He can’t accept it now, now that it seems real and now that the angel was so solidly good, so individualistic and pure. He burns his body and watches, red-eyed. This time it’s real. This time God isn’t on their side to bring him back. So he does what he knows—he drinks, he hides in comfort, he puts himself at risk. He starts thinking that maybe the solution to their problems is for him to die—really, hadn’t they destroyed the natural order enough?
And then the angel calls him from a payphone and all thoughts of ending his life are wiped from his mind. Dean didn’t care how he’d returned, just brought him home and indulged in a way they never did—they took a fun case, they dressed up like cowboys and caught a bad guy.
They’re not allowed fun, though. They’re doomed by the narrative—the God that is insistent upon failure. Over and over they’re tested, and no matter whose mother is killed and whose psyche is broken by being blamed for it, they stay together. Because you can hate and love at the same time. Because you don’t really hate them.
And at the end of it all, they’re still together. In the angel’s last moments, it’s still only about his human. What’s important is getting Dean safe, is coming up with a plan that saves Dean. Because even though Castiel had all his grace, Dean was the powerful one. Dean was the one who needed to kill God, who needed to stay alive, and who deserved a life.
And the angel did the only thing he knew how to do, the only thing that always worked—he sacrificed himself for his human. He told his human that he was in love with him, and told him the things he needed to hear, and let himself be swallowed up by eternity. All for Dean. For Dean, who was still beautiful.
And this did save the world, but Dean wasn’t the same, really. He vowed to give himself a good life, try to move forward, but it really wasn’t going to happen was it? It was always going to end in his brother’s arms after a hunt. And he was okay with it. And when he got to Heaven, sitting beside his true father with a beer in hand, he heard Cas’s name and smiled. It had been ages since he smiled.

Maintenance
When Sam’s phone rings and he sees Castiel’s caller ID, he can’t quite suppress the old sense of alarm. Their lives have been peaceful for a while now - maybe too peaceful. And although Dean and Cas have seemed happy since moving into Bobby’s old cabin last year, Sam doesn’t trust that happiness. From experience, good things never last for the Winchesters.
Warily, he picks up the phone. “Cas, hey, what’s going on?”
“Can I seek refuge at the bunker?” As usual, the angel isn’t one for preliminaries.
“Why?” Sam asks, immediately worried. “What happened? Where’s Dean?”
“He’s at the farmer’s market.”
“The farmer’s market? What for?”
“To buy food.” Cas sounds annoyed. “That’s what you do there.”
Sam rubs his forehead. “I know that. But I didn’t know Dean did. But what does that have to do with you seeking refuge? Is someone after you? Something? Do you need help?”
“I definitely need help.” A nuance of desperation bleeds through Castiel’s grumpiness. “The situation is dire.”
Sam is squinting into the phone now. He still has no idea what the hell Cas is talking about.
“Cas, what happened? What the hell is going on?”
On the other end of the line, the angel sighs deeply. “I sent Dean for a check-up.”
“A check-up? At the doctor’s?” Sam’s heartbeat picks up.
“Yes. Humans are feeble creatures. They need maintenance, Samuel,” Cas lectures him.
“I know that,” Sam all but snaps back, his patience wearing thin. “And Dean went? Is he sick?”
“Not yet. But he could become sick if he doesn’t watch his-... wait, I forgot what it’s called.” There’s a pause, and Sam hears paper rustling in the background. “... his cholesterol. It’s too high.”
Now it’s Sam’s turn to sigh. He has a hunch where this is going. “Did his doctor put him on a diet?”
Castiel grunts gloomily. “He told him to swap meat for vegetables.”
“Let me guess,” Sam says, battling a feeling somewhere between relief, worry and laughter. “He’s eating greens and hating it.”
“...and being unbearable, yes,” Cas adds. “I know he’s doing this for me, Sam. He wants to be healthy for me. But, dear God, he’s killing me.” Sam can literally hear the misery written on the angel’s face.
“That bad?”
“He’s angry all the time. Even when he sleeps.”
Sam can’t help it. He chuckles.
“It’s not funny, Sam.”
“I know, I know.” Sam disguises his inappropriate mirth in a cough. “I’m sorry, Cas. I can imagine.”
He hears Castiel scratch his ever-present stubble.
“What shall I do, Sam? Can I stay with you and Eileen for a while? Until he's less... like this?”
Sam takes a moment to think. “Of course you can. But I don’t think it’ll help Dean’s mood if he thinks you’re leaving him.”
“I’m not leaving him!” Cas is appalled.
“No, but he’ll take it that way, Cas. You know how he is. He’s always afraid that you will. And he’ll blame himself. And that will make him even more angry.”
“I don’t think that’s possible.” Glumly.
“That bad?”
“Demon Dean was a ray of sunshine compared to him.”
“Oh.”
They both fall silent for a moment. Sam is just about to suggest something when, on the other end of the line, he hears a door slam.
“Sam, Dean’s back,” Castiel hisses.
“Hey hey! Who are you talking to, Cas?”
Dean’s voice. Bright and cheerful.
“I’m… I’m talking to Sam…”
“Oh yeah? Tell him and Eileen to come over tonight! I’m putting steaks on the grill. And burgers. I’m gonna show that doctor where he can shove his cholesterol.”
Dean laughs, defiantly and wholeheartedly, and Sam can imagine the i-don’t-give-a-damn joy in his brother’s eyes.
Then Castiel is back on the line. “Did you hear what he said?” He sounds very relieved.
“Yes.” Sam smirks. “Problem solved, I guess?”
“For now. But I’ll need you to teach me some heart-healthy recipes. Maintenance, remember?”
“I’ll be happy to. But it’s you who’ll make him eat them.”
Castiel sighs again. “God help me.”
Sam chuckles again. “I’m afraid you’re on your own, buddy.”
He hangs up, to the sound of Dean whistling gaily in the background.
