#castle swimmer rambles

On this post on Castle Swimmer details that I haven’t completely threaded together but have been floating around my head: Kappa and his connection to turtles.

After episode 100 was released, one of the main things that quickly stuck out to me, other than the emotional devastation I was quickly going to feel, was how the main character from the story Kappa got his name from and the god that destroyed the witches’s castle we’re both turtles. Asides from setting up some more neat parallels between Kappa and the witches, it was something I kept in the back of my mind for when we learnt more about this mini god that destroyed castle and, oh boy, did it bring forward implications for the rest of the story.

When we first learnt Labbu’s name in episode 120, we found out they aren’t just any mini god, oh no, they are a full on god. The god of the abyss, the creator of the mini gods and the only other god that we know exists in this world other than the god of the surface. Knowing this put the turtle link in a whole new light, since it recontextualizes Kappa’s name having a link between the mini god that destroyed his friends’s castle to Kappa’s name having a link to the likely main antagonist of Castle Swimmer. As a result, it has caused me to go back to that children’s story now and again with Labbu in mind. I’ve seen the idea that the Kappa from the children’s story and Labbu are one and the same, and while I don’t think it’s the case, I do think that the children’s story could have parallels to the creation of Labbu. I don’t have a complete picture of this theory yet, but since the mini god’s powers come from fossils, Labbu being the source of this power and the fossils likely coming from the work of the ancient people, my money at the moment is on Labbu being some creation of the ancient people, whether it was intentional or not. I’ll probably try to make a proper theory post about this idea when I’ve smoothed out more of the details but I think it’s the idea that makes the most sense at the moment.

While I’m still on Labbu, thanks to episode 155, we now know for sure that there are, or at least were, multiple beacons. Since Labbu is the creator of the mini gods, this revelation really fuels the idea that the mini gods could be Labbu’s attempt of creating their own version of the beacons. Could they have something to do with what happened to these other beacons? Possibly, but either way, it’s going to be interesting to learn what exact feelings Labbu and the God of the Surface have about each other.

On a more outer-story discussion, it seems like these decisions around turtles could be based on Kappa in mythology. For those who don’t know, Kappa’s name comes from the mythical creature of the same name. A kappa is a reptiloid kami with similarities to yōkai found in traditional Japanese folklore. They are typically depicted as green, human-like beings with webbed hands and feet and turtle-like carapaces on their backs.

If both Labbu and Kappa from the children’s story were chosen to be turtles as a reference to Kappa in folklore, that’s a really cool detail!

"Don't you want to go for a little swim, baby? It's really warm." your Mommy asked while grabbing a towel and sitting down next to you on your Bluey towel.

"Nu-uh, wanna build castle," you said and put more sand into your bucket. You had a pretty beach toy set that Uncle Pietro gifted you after Tony announced that the team will go on a vacation together.

Wanda nodded and kissed your cheek, a few water droplets dripping from her chin onto your shoulder, making you shiver.

After some more sand castle building, you looked up to see how much fun the others were having. Peter was on Thor's shoulders, shouting happily while trying to throw Natasha off of Clint.

Wanda had watched you for a while and noticed the tiny frown on your face. She sat up and grabbed your chin between her fingers, gently turning you to face her.

"Why don't you want to go into the water?" she asked, taking off her sunglasses to keep eye contact. "Be honest, detka"

You mumbled something she couldn't understand so she made you say it again but louder. "I can't swim mommy..."

The way you lowered your head in embarrassment made the Witch go all soft in a matter of seconds.

"Oh baby, it's okay. I'm so proud of you for telling me" she praised and opened her arms for you to climb in, petting your head and Wanda can feel how hot your skin is against hers.

She pulls a bit away to look at you again before asking. "You want me to teach you how to swim?"

"Mhm! But you will pwotect me, right?! I no wanna drown mommy!" you rambled down, clinging onto Wanda for dear life.

The redhead had to chuckle a little, of course she was going to protect you. She would never let anything happen to you, ever.

"I will always protect you." She smiled and got up with you, helping you put on your arm floats.

Wanda took your hand and dragged you closer to the water. The water already went to your knees and you stopped walking when you saw something on the ground.

"Mommy, look! A starfish!" you squealed and pointed at it.

"That's right, smart baby" she smiled and continued to walk further into the water.

Wanda took both your hands in her own and started to instruct you what to do, which you gladly did.

While Wanda was teaching you to swim your uncle Pietro offered to help and was holding you right now, waiting for you to tell him that he could let you go.

"Okay, now come to me, detka!" your Mommy encouraged you to swim on your own for the first time.

You took some deep breaths and got in position. "Otay, now!"

Pietro let you go and you started kicking your legs to move forward and used your arms even if it was a bit uncoordinated, but after some more swimming in the compound's pool area you will be the best swimmer, your Mommy is sure of that.

"Go printessa! Go!" Pietro cheered and clapped his hands.

Soon you reached Wanda and she turned you around in the water, kissing your salty cheek.

"You did amazing! You were faster than Pietro ever could." she joked and you giggled when you saw how offended the speedster was.

"I demand a swimming race now!" he said and Peter raised his hand shouting 'me too!'.

"I would also like to join that race of yours." Thor joined the conversation and soon you started to see who was the fastest.

Wanda watched with amusement and was just happy to see you having so much fun with the others and now even learned how to swim.

OHHHH I was gonna say so MUCH. I was gonna say so much like how I love your comic and I love your boys and how much castle swimmers has made me want to read shark/other fish facts again. BUT I'll try to keep it swift to two points!!!!

First! I saw someone theorize and I remembered several things. Like the whales falling from the surface. And the flyfins having ended up falling with them ages ago. And how Kappa can't go all the way to the surface. And how Orakos clearly knows about the surface [or at least the ancient people!] and how they're looking for the Beacon. And I went back to the very first page, where Kappa's egg falls from an unknown height... and I can't help but think of Finding Nemo. One remaining little fish egg that survived. Maybe it fell and wasn't supposed to... maybe something happened and he was the sole survivor. The god of the surface seemed perfectly chatty when Kappa was first born, but then.. nothing? It's all quite interesting!

But you can't respond to that mindless rambling past nodding and humming thoughtfully LOL. So I do have a question! Siren and the rest of the sharks! Do they lose teeth like sharks do in real life? That is to say, they lose or shed them somewhat regularly but always regrow them bc sharks have minmaxed Teeth. I'm mad curious.

And for the sharks, they don’t have as many teeth as real sharks and they don’t shed them regularly but they will grown new teeth if they lose some ;)

1. Nethimir is mad, like all the time. Shes mad at everything that has happened. But shes still somehow suppressing all that anger because theres nothing she can really do about it anymore

2. When kappa and arp met, kappa would constantly talk to arp about his day. He would have one sided conversations with arp, ramble on and on about prophecys, vent to him, tell him about his hopes and dreams. because all he really had was arp, he didnt have anybody else to talk to or make any connections. and even though its been a long time since kappa was alone, arp still holes every single memory and talks

3. mono loves to cook, its her hidden talent! she can make any sort of spice, dessert, drink out of basically nothing. siren and mucku are her new taste testers and they enjoy every second of it. I also imagine siren has like a bottomless stomach. Can eat alot without getting sick. But he doesnt

My Patreon work time was spent writing my writer ramble for January (this month's topic/theme is "Romantasy" because it's what was on my mind lately).

Life

Playing a lot of Genshin and Twisted Wonderland to avoid spiraling into stressed breakdowns. Not really much I want to get into here in regards to my buffet of stressors. Also binging a lot of webcomics! Just got caught up on Castle Swimmer by Wendy Lian Martin. I've been on a queer mermaid media binge lately - working my way through the novel Our Bloody Pearl by D.N. Bryn (as fast as my ADHD allows).

One thing I really wasn’t expecting but appreciated seeing in episode 150 was just how battered Shoal was compared to previous flashbacks we’ve seen him in. In Herm’s drawing, Herm’s memories and Siren’s memories, we see that Shoal has some scars here and there, with his main one being across his face. Importantly though, I haven’t spotted any major new scars between Siren’s memories and Herm’s memories, with the only exception being the scar he’ll likely get from that injury we saw him treating before he left Herm’s place. Due to his overlay, it’s impossible to prove if he had any new scars on his chest and tail during that time, but overall, it seems like Shoal didn’t get too many new scars from before he left the castle, to when Herm saw him last.

Now with episode 150, we have our first full flashback with him where his complete face isn’t obscured and god…just look at him in comparison.

He has new scars everywhere: on his face, his ears, his neck, around his gils, his arms and his hands. Most notably for me, he has now has a scar on his left cheek like Siren, feeding into the increasing parallels we’re seeing between father and son in their respective journeys. Getting back on track, like with Herm’s memories, we don’t know if he has any new scars on his chest and tail because of his overlay, but considering the number of new scars he has, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does.

Those two years between Herm last seeing him and him staying at the sanctuary weren’t kind to Shoal and it shows, both physically and mentally. If she wanted, Wendy could have just added a few new visual scars and left it at that, but she went full in and I think it did an incredible job in displaying the toll his journey has taken on him, making this flashback with him even more heartbreaking as he delves into all his doubts and guilt surrounding his decision.

Part of me wonders if something specific happened during that two year period that caused Shoal to get such an increase in scars, or if the curse was affecting him more as he traveled further away from elements of the ocean he was more familiar with. With the parallels between him and Siren, he could have gotten in an accident that forced him to rest for an extended period like Siren did when he was killed and brought back to life (though Shoal’s injuries obviously wouldn’t be as…severe). If something like this did happened, again, like Siren, this could have been the time his guilt really started to dig its teeth into him.

It’s very likely I’m overthinking though, cause again, there’s a whole two year gap between him staying with Herm and staying at the Sanctuary, with him being on the hunt for an alternative solution to the curse for six years at that point. There is already plenty of time available for guilt and doubts to eat away at someone at the point, even without being forced into a situation where you have limited things to do other than think

Okay so first we had the crab compass

And now we have the curse compass.

I love how they are both a compass, the detail of that I just.. love.. like they both lead to something very relevant to their storylines right now.

Siren's is very handy I'll say, he'll always know how to get back home as long as he's bleeding, he has his own trail back and that's so cool!!

And Kappa's is so helpful in the fact it will lead the witches to where they need to be, no matter what he is always helpful.

If you think about it the way of which they are compasses are very relevant to their character, how they are and their situations. Siren's compass always leads back to his people, he always has a connection to them and can always get back to them when he needs to. Therefore, he can very well return to them as he knows how to get back. And with it being blood related and all it matches with the curse very nicely.

As for Kappa, well him being a compass to these witches is very helpful to them, they have been struggling to get this Minigod for a while now and he can aid them in their search and help them as he has with everyone else. Even if he wants to stop helping people he is helping here and it's wonderful.

I just love the detail of them both being compasses, it's really awesome.
