「Kissie Spot」
(Lon Chaney Erik x GN Reader) Romantic, sugestive but SFW
Tumblr media
Another fanfiction, yay! This is Lon Chaney's version of Erik because the silent movie is my favorite adaptation. I'm not used to write self-insert fanfictions soooo plz give me a break 🥹 the Reader is gender neutral by the way 👍🏽 have good reading :3
You woke up after a comfortable night sleep in a bed shaped like a swan. The few seconds after awakening were enough for you to remember the events of the previous day: you were courted by the Phantom of the Opera himself, the mysterious specter in the darkness. He brought you to his subterranean abode and trusted enough to tell you his true name: Erik. Gods, he loved you! The fearsome nameless legend that prowled the theater was madly in love with you. It felt weird, like acidic butterflies dancing inside you. It was strange, even frightening at one point, but at the same time… tender. Like a hidden desire touched on in the most libertine of nights.
You get up in bed and observe the room around you, everything was perfectly architected as a dark lair. The style of the catacombs reminded you of the so-called 'barbarian architecture' of the Dark Ages, a name given by the Renaissance that sounded rather insensitive towards 'gothic' sculptures. Everything that referred to the occult, the demonic and the incomprehensible was fascinating to you, and apparently, to the Phantom as well.
Your thoughts are interrupted when macabre and terribly dramatic music is played on the pipe organ. The melody rang through your ears like a siren's voice seduces sailors; it was impossible not to lean towards the triumphant spectacle. If, on just one instrument, music disturbingly penetrated your soul, you imagined what it would be like to hear the piece in a large and phenomenal orchestra. You left the room and headed towards the masked man. He played the pipe organ like no other musician, it was the darkest, most intense and most pleasurable way you will ever witness. You approach Erik and tap him on the shoulder, eliciting a noticeable anxiety that sends shivers down his spine.
— Oh! You're awake... - Erik said, sighing - I... I made you breakfast. You can stay here for as long as you like.
Erik, in contrast to the chivalry of the day before, felt shy and unsure of himself when talking to you. It's like he can't believe you stayed in his house without dying or running away in the middle of the night.
— I appreciate it, but I'm not hungry right now. – you answer, running your fingers gently over his shoulders – What song was that? Did you write it?
— Oh, yes – Erik pointed to the sheet music in front of him, written 'Don Juan Triumphant' – Ever since I laid eyes on you, this song echoes through my head. The sound of love triumphant.
If it weren't for the ominous, pale mask, you'd be able to watch Erik's face redden – just as your own face did. He played again, this time less immersed in the feeling. Visibly uneasy... your presence was like a test to him, and even more so for his proximity. You decide to break that invisible barrier, sit down next to Erik and wrap one of your arms around his back.
— It must be a divine triumph, judging by that small piece of the play.
— A-ah, yes... - Erik replies, feeling a little more courageous with all the praise he received – I put all my inner demons into this work. But there is beauty in everything, even the most vile of gargoyles... in my music, that's how it is.
Comments of that nature always came out in a sad tone from the Phantom's lips. Judging by his anxiety and the mask that covered his face at all times, you'd come to the conclusion that he had a lot of issues with self image. After all, who would isolate themselves from the world, in a catacomb, if not to escape the horrors outside? But you wanted Erik to trust you, just as you placed your trust in him when you accompanied him underground.
— Erik – you call him, resting your head on his shoulder – Can I see your face?
Upon hearing this question, Erik shuddered and stopped playing, abruptly pulling away from you.
— D-don't ever ask me to do that! Please, my angel, I... I don't have a face. What I have is the remains of a face, a carcass abandoned and despised by the Gods. No one must see my face... especially you.
— Why do you say that? You do not trust me? – you approach him again and join your hands in his.
— I… I trust you, but… – Erik stammered, his eyes filled with tears – Not even my parents loved me. They rejected me for my face, just like everyone else... that's why I live in hiding, to avoid going through the same horrors as before.
Your chest ached with sadness hearing those harsh words. You couldn't imagine how a father, a mother, could be so cruel to their own child! You had no idea how broken Erik was, after so many years in a cycle of pain and rejection. You slowly approached and hugged him, feeling him shudder at first. Erik got emotional and hugged you back, still a little hesitant; his hot tears fell onto your shoulder.
— I'm not going to lose all feelings I have for you just because you have a different face. You are an amazing and lovable person, Erik. Please don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
— Oh… – the masked man laid his head on the crook of your neck, barely able to believe that moment.
Erik pulled away from the hug, his hands shaking and sweating cold. He looked paler than usual. With his head down and his gaze averted from his, Erik takes his hand to the mask and slowly removes it, revealing more and more the morbid and slightly yellow skin. Once his face was completely revealed, he kept his eyes tightly closed as his body became more and more trembling. His skin was abnormally glued to the face, forming a cadaverous image with two holes for a nose. His eyes were very sunken, just like a skeleton. His thinness, what little remained of his lips and its strange coloring referred to the very image of death. Furthermore, the black cloth that accompanied the white mask revealed a bald spot on his head.
Silent seconds – that seemed like hours – were enough for you to analyze that deformity as a whole. The only thing you dared to do was reach your right hand to Erik's face, stroking his cheek. He immediately let out a sigh, scared at first, but relaxed as he felt that caress.
— You see? I said nothing would change between us. – you finally said.
— Oh... - Erik finally opened his eyes and had the courage to face you. He covered your right hand with his, intoxicated by your touch – You... are truly... an angel. My angel…
Erik chastely kissed the palm of your hand. You didn't stop there, instead you hugged him tightly. He didn't say anything else, just sobbed in a silent cry. There was no need to say anything at that moment. While he was distracted – hopelessly immersed in your embrace – you took the opportunity to tuck your face into the crook of his neck, inhaling the sweet masculine scent he had. Erik jumped at the scent he received.
— Wh-what are you doing?
— Sniffing you, silly. – Don't you like it?
Erik thought for a moment. He didn't want to be inappropriate, too needy, or even sound like a pervert. Yet, your fondness was undeniable... it was like an addictive drug he didn't want to retire from. He nodded slowly in affirmation, his face was noticeably flushed. You continued the affection, sniffing and kissing Erik's neck as he let out short, shy sighs. You dared, kissing even his cheek; you felt his salty tears on your tongue, which only emboldened you more. With your hands, you lowered Erik's head to your shoulders and placed a long kiss on his bald head.
— Y-you don't have to do that – he said, stuttering and shuddering, while you continued to place several kisses on his head – I'm not, ah!, I'm not worthy of this affection…
— Yes, you are worthy – you said, finally – And I am willing to kiss all over your body, if you allow me.
Erik smirked and bit his lip, like a child eager for a gift. He stands up, still shy but feeling a slight surge of confidence.
— So... Do you want to go to your room?
You smiled, excited by the invitation, and took Erik's hands.
— I'd love to – you said at last, leading him to your room where you've woken up that morning.
Doing your best to respect his space and time, you wait for him to sit on the bed and continue trailing kisses down his face and neck. Erik gently hugged your waist, sliding his fingers down your back once in a while. He was very quiet, but always flushed and smiling as he received your touches – sometimes he let out a soft giggle. Your hands dared to lift the fabric of his pants, revealing the scarred, pale skin of his legs, which made him pull away again.
— Oh! Sorry, I didn't expect that! – he said awkwardly – M-my legs are not a pleasant sight…
— What do you mean?
— Look at me, I'm sickeningly skinny, I barely have any body hair, and… well, those blue veins are very noticeable. And not just on my leg...
— Erik… – you ran your hand over the musician's trembling shins – I think you're beautiful from head to toe. And jumpy veins are normal, everyone has them.
— But mine are different! It was... years... years of slavery that punished my body so much... these scars, they...
— They don't matter. All of that is in the past, Erik. You're here with me – you kissed him passionately on the lips, which made him gasp over your nose – That's what matters now.
You slowly lowered yourself over his body, placing a light kiss on his leg. Feeling him approve of your attitude, you continued kissing each scar, each bluish and bulging vein that caused so much agony and bad memories. Erik managed not to make any undue noises, instead he lied back on the bed and closed his eyes, appreciating your affection. But he wasn't prepared for your next step: you lifted his pants higher and kissed his inner thigh, which made him accidentally let out a moan of pleasure. It had mere seconds, but loud enough for you to hear. He was terribly embarrassed, redder than a strawberry.
— F-forgive me, I… tried not to…
You laugh softly and grab him by the waist.
— It's okay, Erik. We don't need to go further if you don't want to – you crawl towards his chest, until their faces meet – But there's no need to be ashamed of feeling pleasure.
With those words, Erik felt as if pounds of guilt and anxiety had been lifted off his shoulders. He felt comfortable, happy, calm, all around you. During his years living under violence, slavery and isolation, he never thought he would find a place so comforting. This place was you, your love, your hug, your smell, everything you could offer.
— Oh… my angel… I couldn't ask for a better gift.
— I say the same – you answer, kissing him again on the lips and feeling his skin rubbing against yours – I love you, Erik.
He smiled while more tears ran down his face. The Phantom of the Opera was loved, loved for what he was. He was saved by your love.

Thoughts on As Above, So Below (2014)
I feel like documentary/found footage should have natural character interactions. Maybe it’s just the beginning, but Scarlett’s interactions with George seem more like forced romance.
Maybe I’m just spoiled with Cloverfield (2008)
Scarlett is kinda a bitch for dragging George along
Yeah Scarlett has big main character energy, and in the annoying way
The character interactions did get much better when they went down in the catacombs
Kind of a weird way to wrap up the movie and even weirder end credit music
If you want cave diving with a more believable world, watch The Descent (2005)
Spoilers below
Idk would you trust a friend who’s been lost for 2 years in the catacombs? His mind must be fucked if he weren’t this weird apparition
Real nerd shit in the Ptolemaic hinge leading into an Indiana Jones ass tunnel
LOL “is he dead?” “Yeah for 700 years”
“Turn out your headlamps” “no way, there’s a dead guy right there” so true
They really fucked over La Taupe twice
So is the stone going to make the palm of her hand ageless?
Cosme Castro did a great job as La Taupe
The car scene logistics pulled me out of immersion a bit when I didn’t expect it to
NOT THE FORCED ROMANCE

My favourite music releases 2023
As it has been tradition for several years now it is time for me to rethink the music releases of this year that stuck with me the most. 10. Bell Witch: Future's Shadow part 1: The Clandestine Gate
Bell Witch keep up their identity as the band that presents some of the densest and most atmospheric doom soundscapes the genre has to offer. This newest entry to their discography plays not only to their previous strengths but in many ways surpasses them with new and enriching ambient elements that simply put enthrall the listener with the earthy sound direction.
9. Graven Dägger: No King's Land
Combining Dungeon Synth elements with any genre of Rock and/or Metal is a surefire way to create a fun aswell as fantastical listening experience. Graven Dägger use the inherently retro aspects of Dungeon Synth as a genre and highten them with their catchy Rock riffs that guarantee some headbobbing with any listener.
8. Maȟpíya Lúta: Wowahla
Yet another stunning entry in the breakout subgenre of Native American Black Metal. From the intense riffs to the exciting sythy intros this record is a treat for any listener searching for a slightly experimental edge to their black metal.
7. Poison Ruïn: Härvest
Punk meets medieval peasant revolt meets deep dark dungeons and dank catacombs. Still a band to look out for in the future. Banger after banger.
6. Trhä: alëce iΩic
It has been a challenge to find the one of Trhäs numerous releases this year to be the one to be put on this list. I picked this one because of the intense atmospheric bliss it represents. A steadfast companion on many a long walk but also just a representative of the rabbit hole that is Trhäs wild and varied discography.
5. Malfet: Dolorous Gard
The obligatory pure Dungeon Synth pick which appears on all my lists of this sort. Malfet is back and he once again offers proof as to why he remains my favourite musician of the entire scene. Music that truly captures the spirit of fantastic tales told since ancient times. From haunting to aetherically beautiful, this album is a must listen of the genre.
4. Downfall of Gaia: Silhouettes of Disgust
There is something to be said about bands like Downfall of Gaia who never seem to fail with any of their release. Allthough this album doesn't offer quite as a much a stylistic change from their last album as it died to the second to last it still refines the current sound of the band to an impressive maelstrom of melancholic mania. The sheer aggression and power behind every track pierce through all the numb feelings that might deafen us to the world around us and the pain that often reminds us of what we are. Devastatingly powerful.
3. vvilderness: Path
Whenever there is a new release by vvildir I can't help but tell anyone around me about it. After listening to it for the first I called my boyfriend at work just to not even be able to speak out of sheer euphoric joy about this staggeringly beautiful album. Vvilderness is a fully unique listening experience and Path definetly presents a very refined and formidably crafted example of this wonderful projects outputs.
2. Рожь (aka Rye): Bcë
Dark but not depressing, fantastical but not whimsical, dreamlike yet fully here. An intense and immersive listening experience that feels woefully underrated to me.
Domhain: Nimue
An expertly crafted release that surprised and amazed me in every single way. I cannot find a fault with the three presented songs besides wanting even more of them. A masterclass of atmospheric songwriting and composition that sits on a unique pedestal. Cannot stop having this one on repeat. What a wonderful thing to be dropped into my lap (and ears).

Myrkur: Spine
Wolvennest: The Dark Path To The Light

One Scary Assistant. (Scarecrow x Fem!Reader)
MasterList
Tumblr media
Joker had started a riot on the grounds of Arkham Asylum and Jonathan Crane and (Y/N) thought it would be the perfect opportunity to continue their experiments which the Batman had so rudely interrupted when he captured them. So to the morgue they went after all where better to test the fear toxin than the scariest place in the asylum? (Y/N) also got Joker to leave them alone by giving him a few doses of their weaker fear toxin for something he was hiding in the abandoned wing of Arkham but why question what that psychopath was up to when they had work to do.
Studying the Batman in the thralls of fear was so very interesting to both Jonathan and (Y/N). So many doses and he still fought through it! Oh how fascinating this man was! Jonathan had given the dark knight just enough toxin to keep him busy while they made their way to the catacombs under intensive treatment to release their strongest toxin yet into the watersupply. “Oh Jonny I can't wait to see what'll happen!” (Y/N) said excitedly as she clung onto Scarecrow’s arm. "Yes pet, it will be fascinating…so much fear in the streets.” he said holding the sack of fear toxin away from his excitable assistant. The sound of water could be heard as they went down to the door at the end of the hall. “It seems Ivy has gotten stronger" (y/n) said as she gazed at the large glowing plants infront of them. “So it would seem. Come on (y/n) we have work to do.” Jonathan said as he pulled the young woman farther into the catacombs entrance and down the old metal stairs. The two were so immersed in their plan neither heard the door open a few minutes later however (y/n) caught movement out of the corner of her eye and turned to see the large man dressed like a bat investigating the glowing plants. “Jonny!”(y/n) whispered lightly pulling said man's arm. "Oh what is it now (y/n)? I'm busy." Jonathan snapped as he turned to her before his blue eyes settled on the dark mass behind her. "Too late, Batman! One step closer… and this goes into the water! The cave will fill with your deepest, darkest nightmares and you will never reach your precious Venom roots." he said with a laugh as he backed up closer to the water. (Y/n)’s eyes widened with excitement and anticipation as she watched Batman take a step forward to stop him, but before he could get close to the Scarecrow Killer Croc popped up making him drop the sack of toxin then dragged the man under the murky water. Batman turned his attention back (y/n) who's eyes flicked between the dark knight and the toxin. “Don’t even think about it." he warned. His warning went unheeded however as the young woman sprang forwardand grabbedthe sack only to be pulled to the ground by Batman hard enough to knock her out before he continued into Croc’s lair for the samples he needed but when he returned the young woman was nowhere to be found.
That was two years ago and (y/n) had been clean of any crime but struggled to find a new job but odd jobs helped make ends meet. The small rundown apartment wasn’t much but it kept the Bat and other vigilantes off her back. That's how her life was, boring and repetitive. That was until Halloween when Scarecrow made his threat to cover the city in a new more powerful fear toxin. A smile grew on (y/n)’s face she knew he couldn't be dead! It was just a feeling but she was happy it was right. Watching Gotham in chaos was satisfying, this is how it should've been two years ago. (Y/n) sat on the roof of the tall apartment complex as the huge cloud of toxin took over the city the screams of fear were music to her ears but it would seem the Bat couldn't stay down since the cloud of toxin slowly dissipated halfway through the night. With a sigh (y/n) went back to her apartment and opened her closet to see her old uniform to match Jonathan's and some fear toxin grenades she had made but hadn't had a chance to show him befor they were caught. It had been awhile since she dawned the outfit but with a sigh of happiness she got herself ready to go. Jonathan was sure to be caught but (y/n) wouldn't let him stay locked up for long. Staying in the shadows wasn't hard in the dark city of Gotham as (y/n) made her way to the GCPD she made sure not to be noticed. The garage doors were locked tight but in this city she knew it wouldn't be long before they opened for a car to come through and once one did she slipped inside. Peeking down the winding lot she saw a few officers sitting around and no Batmobile in sight, lucky her. Pulling the pin from the grenade she tossed it toward them as she pulled down her gas mask as the orange fog erupted from the little container and screams of fear began to fill the parking lot. The doors whipped open as other officers came out only to take in lung fulls of fear. “Tell me what scares you piggies?” (Y/n) giggled as she pushed them away and dropped another grenade once inside. Moving quickly as the toxin took over the department (y/n) quickly found Jonathan. “Hey Jonny it’s time to get out of here.” she said as she grabbed his shoulder through the bars. His blue eyes met hers and a small smile found its way to his features. "How did I know you'd come for me, pet?” He said in a raspy voice. "Because I'd never leave you, love.” she said before finding the keys and unlocking the large cell. "Let's get out of here we have a lot of catching up to do."

Holy s- this piece.  And way to go with the "As your experiences in bed have undoubtedly told you, there is no bigger turn-off than a complete systems failure" part that seems to insult the presumed-to-be-male audience too? -_o  And the "science" snippet that says women can't play FPSes because we can't navigate 3D space, but women are good at adventure games because women talk more than men... but remember gamer guys, don't complain about women being bad at things because you used to be a girl in your mom's womb once! Holy cow, PC Zone, not helping.
Transcription for screenreaders (big thanks to Bella (@MoviePosters00) for the transcription):
HOW TO GET YOUR GIRLFRIEND INTO GAMES
You've been playing games for years, but just imagine what they must look like from a non-gamer's point of view. They suck. The graphics are crap. Look out of your window — that's good graphics. These just look shoddy and blocky in comparison.
And what's with all the violence? Why do you have to kill everybody? Why can't you just talk to them? And what are these locations? Cathedrals? Dungeons? Catacombs? God, it's all so dark and depressing. And why are there so many blokes in these games? And what the hell am I doing spending hours playing this when I could be out talking to people, reading books, watching films, living life... This is how girls think.
Girls and games rarely mix. They rarely mix because you — man, boy, bloke, fellow, chap, me lad —you designed them.
Unlike most other examples of popular culture, computer games are predominantly designed and programmed by blokes and so inevitably appeal to men and the male tick-list of desirable experiences: being a superhero, being competitive, being murderous, and doing things fast.
Sure, we play the odd puzzler like Tetris. And yes, we can be found occasionally talking to elves in adventure games. But on the whole, we want violence, people's heads exploding, fast cars, big jets and gouts of hot arterial blood splattered against cobblestones. We want wars and vast armies of ourselves crushing other vast armies of people different to us into the dust.
She thinks: "Why play stupid computer games when you could be making me a cup of tea, paying me some attention, taking me out (or whatever your relationship revolves around)?"
You think: "Why waste valuable time attending to you when I've got to complete this freaking level?"
She strops. You grit your teeth. You feel bad about playing so you grab what gameplay you can in unsatisfying snatches, standing up every five to ten minutes and stroking her hair.
You say: "You okay?" She says: "Yeah. Guess so." You sprint back to your machine for another five-minute burst. Suddenly it's 2am. She's face-down asleep and you're having just one more go. Relationship: terminated.
Obviously, the ideal situation would be for both of you to like games. Those with PlayStations will probably have already experienced a touch of curiosity about games from their partners. But if the PlayStation is designed to be simple and appealing, the PC is a horrible beige monolith, forced to do games as an afterthought.
But it can be done. You can get your girlfriend playing games. We at PC ZONE have designed a 12-Part System. It takes some planning and no small amount of patience. We can't guarantee 100 per cent results but we believe, if you follow this plan, at the least, she will have some idea of why the hell you play games in the first place.
THE 12 RULES OF GIRLFRIEND GAMING
Step-by-step techniques for getting your girlfriend into games
1 CHOOSE WISELY
There's no point throwing her directly into Falcon 4 or Dark Reign II. Keep your game choices simple and realistic. Choose a game with strong interactive qualities and with real-life locations. There aren't, however, many good girl games on the PC.
PC ZONE chooses:
Half-Life
The hazard course is a particularly good starting point. It takes a while to get going but once they're hooked, they'll never stop.
Tomb Raider III
Despite what feminists say about her bosoms, girls like playing girls. Especially strong, agile ones.
Motocross Madness
Great driving game set 'outside', with hyper-realistic graphics. Exhilarating and amusing.
Creatures 2
Yeah, yeah, they "get to raise babies". Easy joke.
Worms
Because you can name the worms and then blow them up.
Quake II
Multiplayer especially. They'll hate it at first but try and try again. They'll get it.
Grim Fandango
Interactive, movie-like, funny, with a plethora of locations and mysteries. How much more girly can a game get?
Others (recommended by visitors to our website)
Puzzle Bobble, YOU Don't Know Jack, Baku Baku Animal, Civilization, SimCity 3000, Sam & Max, Broken Sword, Little Big Adventure, Settlers 3, Caesar IA Fallout 2, Zork: Grande Inquisitor
2 SET UP YOUR ROOM
Rule number one: tidy it. Rule number two: tidy it again (and vacuum this time). No-one wants their first introduction to games to happen in the midst of a smeg pit. Clear the mugs away. Wipe all those shavings and toenails off your desk. Clear the cigarette butts, bits of paper, Blu-tack and Coke cans out of the way. Get a nice clean mouse — not one clogged up with three months' worth of dried skin. Clean all those manky half-moons of crap off the keys on your keyboard, too.
Use Stanislavski's Circles Of Attention technique to minimise her distraction. Turn off the main light in your room and erect a side light which creates a pool of illumination around your computer. This makes the computer screen the centre of focus and mutes any peripheral distractions. In short, she has nowhere to look if she gets bored.
3 SELL HER THE GAME
Talk to her in language she can understand. Remember: you are a computer games geek.
She is a proper person who cares about things like emotions and novels. Don't use jargon. Ramp up any 'interactive' elements (talking, speaking, puzzle-solving). Play down hyper-violent aspects (flying globules of gibbage, explosions with true particles, realistic death throes). Once she's over her initial reluctance, she'll be as bloodthirsty as anyone, but you have to get her there first.
Half-Life
You want to say: "Next-generation first-person shoot 'em up with strong narrative elements."
You should say: "011, it's an amazing unfolding story with you playing the central character."
Motocross Madness
You want to say: "The real-time shadows are unbelievable and on Voodoo2 it uses tri-linear mapping for a super-realistic fractal landscape."
You should say: "It's really realistic and it's set outside."
Worms Armageddon
You want to say: "It's like that tank game you used to play in school where you'd enter the trajectory and balance it against wind speed."
You should say: "It's like Tetris."
TOP TIP If you're ever in any doubt about how to describe a game, just say: "It's like Tetris." Whatever you do, though...
4 DON'T OVER-HYPE IT
"Oh God, this is the best 3D shoot 'em up ever. The graphics are unbelievable. It’s such a brilliant game. It rules." Do not say anything like this or you'll create preconceptions. A game will have to have reality-quality graphics and the most involving storyline ever known to grab her after that sales pitch. To the uninitiated, compared to reality, a good film or a great novel, games - all games - suck and blow (at the same time).
5 HAVE A GOOD MACHINE
Don't waste your time trying to convert her to the Dark Side if you're packing a five-year-old PC with a green screen and Sinclair BASIC. Who wants to see a glut of piss-poor pixels masquerading as people and locations? Get 3D acceleration. And get it now. Get RAM. Get a nice big monitor and some meaty speakers. If you're going to use a joystick, get a big, firm one she can grasp (yes, insert crap joke here).
Get a joypad if you can. Remember, computers were never designed for games. It may be more versatile in the long term, but a keyboard isn't as forgiving as a joypad (plus you get to see her 'girl-steering' the pad in mid air when taking corners in racing games). The mouse is a brilliant 3D navigation device, but not at first and certainly not for someone used to pushing icons around a flat screen.
6 ENSURE EVERYTHING IS RUNNING CORRECTLY
As your experiences in bed have undoubtedly told you, there is no bigger turn-off than a complete system failure. Blue screen General Protection Faults are the gaming equivalent of a hair-trigger ("Oh sorry, I just GPF'ed"). Create a load of shortcuts on the desktop and configure keys/joystick/sound/video in advance - you don't want to stop the action over and over to adjust CD music volumes or the 'crouch' button.
Don't decide to check your email. Don't receive any phone calls. Don't schedule a clan match. Don't invite your mates over for a pissing contest. Make sure it's just you and her.
7 DON'T TAKE OVER
This is Five Gold Rings of the plan - the most important piece of advice. Resist the temptation to dominate proceedings. As she tumbles - for the fortieth time - headlong into the lava, do not snatch the mouse out of her hand and show her how it's done. Encourage. Encourage. Encourage. Every fibre in your body will be screaming for you to take the mouse - don't. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Better still, go outside and scream into a pillow (perhaps two. Eiderdowns). The more you interrupt and cajole, the less she will become immersed in the game and the more you will fail.
8 REASSURE HER
Like any newbie, she needs constant reassurance.
She says: "I'm crap."
You say: "No, you're not just schooled in the conventions of this medium."
She says: "Oh, I can't do it"
You say: "It took me a while to get the hang of it, too."
She says: "What's the point? I don't get it. I'm not doing it anymore."
You say: "There's a really brilliant bit coming up. Just stick at it."
She says: "I'm bored."
You say: "There's a bit like Tetris coming up in a sec."
She says: "Where's the bit like Tetris?"
You say: "It's coming in a minute, okay?
9 DON'T PATRONISE HER
"Ooh, you're doing really well," you say, as she dies on the Half-Life hazard course 50 times in a row. She's not stupid. She knows the difference between succeeding and failing. If she has developed black-ball trouble or a psychological block, change the scenery. Try a different game or a different level. Surreptitiously turn God mode on. Anything.
10 MAKE IT PART OF AN EVENING
Don't just announce that tomorrow night, you'll be playing computer games together. Or lock her in and force her to sit in your chair for hours. Go out for some beers first, or get some wine in, or whatever your relaxation method of choice is. Don't push it. Imagine this is like date number two or three. You wouldn't slap it on a tray and say "Let's go," would you? Maybe you would, but pacing and timing and bit of restraint are going to get you further.
Also, get some snacks in. PC ZONE recommended snacks for girlfriend gaming: Tooty Fruities.
11 POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
It is a psychological fact that people will do things they don't want to if there's a reward for them at the end. You may have to trade. Say you'll go to see a film with subtitles with her if she spends an hour playing games. Or that you'll cook something other than corned beef curry. Or that you will finally pull out those dirty socks that are stuck like cardboard behind the radiator. There has to be a trade. You don't get something for nothing. Hopefully, to use an unfortunate comparison, like Pavlov's dog, every time she hears the ping of the SimCity 3000 menu options or the splattery fine red mist of giblets hitting cobblestones in Quake, she'll start salivating.
And finally...
12 DON'T BE SELFISH
Now you have succeeded in getting her as addicted to games as you are, you must nurture her interest. This means sharing your machine.
Remember, girls always win at beat 'em ups. You can revise all the best, most shimmery combos and special moves but she, just by randomly banging the joypad, will triumph every time. If you lose, don't tell her it was "a crap game anyway". Be gracious.
Maybe you should invest in another PC and set up a network. That way, she can play, you can play, and you can settle washing-up arguments with the railgun. Ah, bliss...
Oh, and don't forget to delete that porn.
AND NOW, THE SCIENCE BIT...
Blokes don't like talking about their emotions and girls can't park. Crass sweeping generalisations or statistically proven sweeping generalisations?
A variety of behavioural differences have been reported for men and women, and researchers have zoned in on 'parallel parking' as an example of the differences between male and female thought processes. Men can often 'see' the space, in 3D, in their brains. Women can perceive the gap, but need to talk about it in order to understand its relationship with the length of their car. They ask themselves questions and come to a conclusion, which takes longer than the male approach, which Is just to pile in there and use the alarms of the vehicles in front and behind to judge distances.
This car-parking phenomenon also has an influence on the way women perceive computer games. For some women, the 3D space and layout of an area in a game like Quake is not immediately obvious to them. Tunnels which lead off from a room, or even the entire architecture of the room itself, may be 'invisible'. This is not, as your grandfather no doubt maintains, because "women are stupid" but simply because they have a tendency to perceive 'negative space', the gaps between objects rather than the objects themselves.
The widely-held belief that women only like adventure games can be explained by recent studies, which found that women spend 43 minutes a day making personal calls and men only 22. Women speak, on average 9,000 words a day, while men utter a mere 2,000. Generally speaking, women communicate more and enjoy the act of talking and interacting more than men.
Anyway, before you start moaning about crap girl gamers or bad parking arguments, remember this: until six weeks into your mother's pregnancy, you were a girl. Then your defective X chromosome kicked in. Everything went haywire and for some reason your nipples weren't absorbed. Your clitoris, however, remained and grew and grew into your penis. Just remember that.
PUT TO THE TEST
We put PC ZONE's 12-Part System for getting your girlfriend into games to the test. We took a bunch of girls, various games, applied the system and tried to convert them to the Dark Side. Here's what happened...
NAME: Paula
AGE: 27
JOB: Make-up artist
STANCE ON COMPUTER GAMES BEFORE: "Boring waste of time. A typically mindless male pursuit."
STANCE AFTER: "No different. The kind of thing you do in the absence of any other stimulation or activity. When you're trapped in the house and there's no alternative. It makes me want to go and read a book."
VERDICT: Thoroughly resisted conversion to the Dark Side.
NAME: Vanessa
AGE: 22
JOB: Model
STANCE ON COMPUTER GAMES BEFORE: "I've only played PlayStation games before. I like martial arts games."
STANCE ON COMPUTER GAMES AFTER: "I really enjoyed them, but I still prefer games that get my adrenalin going."
VERDICT: Converted.
NAME: Mandy
AGE: 27
JOB: Hairdresser
STANCE BEFORE: "I've played puzzley games like Tetris. I get quite addicted, but how blokes can play them for hours or weeks strikes me as strange."
STANCE AFTER: "It's tempting once I get started."
VERDICT: Not much change
NAME: Emma
AGE: 24
JOB: Archaeologist
STANCE BEFORE: "They're all full of blood and violence. For boys who haven't grown up. I like building games like SimCity."
STANCE AFTER: "A bit disappointed you can't shoot people's legs off, but yeah, good fun."
VERDICT: Success.
NAME: Helen
AGE: 28
JOB: Stockbroker
STANCE BEFORE: "They are quite good, but far too complicated. A solitary, masturbation-type thing."
STANCE AFTER: "Yeah, good. I like them. Although I don't think I'm going to develop a habit or anything."
VERDICT: Our job here is done.
Quake ll
PAULA: "It's quite dismal. I don't have any sense of where I am. I'm just running around mindlessly. (Picks up some health 'biscuits.') Have those things disappeared because I picked them up? I don't know where I am. Am I trapped underground? Don't know where I've come from, don't know how to get out (she spends minutes shooting wall fillings). How do I know that's a door? I don't really understand the rewards. I get mild satisfaction from shooting someone. And blowing their head off."
Motocross Madness
PAULA: "I like the outside setting and the freedom. It's exhilarating to move over nice bumpy terrain. It doesn't look that realistic".
VANESSA: "I love this. It's more me. I love racing. The graphics aren't that amazing. I do like the crashes, though. It's wicked. I could play this for hours. It's brilliant. Wheeeeee (performs enormous, deadly cartwheel which should splatter drivers against the rockface like a plum). There's so much open space all over the place. I even like falling off."
MANDY: "It's a bit samey. What are you supposed to do? I like having race-oriented goals. I wouldn't buy it. It's got really weird, illogical controls."
EMMA: "Don't think much of the ground. How are you supposed to know where you're going? I've never been on a bike before... Oooh! I'm doing a wheelie! (The girls clap.) Why is it so sunny? It wouldn't be sunny. It'd be all muddy, like on KickStart, with people standing around who you could hit."
Pacman
PAULA: "Immediately challenging, but there's a really depressing quality about it. The `so what' factor is very strong. The graphics are shit - just lines and dots on a bit of paper. Don't care whether I win or lose. (Indignant) How old is this game?"
Half-Life
PAULA: "Much more exciting than Quake II. More problem solving - more appealing in that sense. The tension is greater and there's more suspense. The usual dismal, claustrophobic setting. It makes me feel anxious and tense. Ah! Ah! (Genuinely screams loudly when she sees a zombie.) That's horrible! I get bored when I go round and round in circles. It makes you aware of how mindless it is. It's quite satisfying - oh (plummets 10,000 feet to her doom) but it's quite satisfying to kill a bizarre monster."
VANESSA: "Feels more real than on the PlayStation. It's quite exciting - all these holes to jump through. It's exciting to use all these fingers. I hate it when I lose. I love guns. I like holding the gun. I thought I just came up the ladder. Why should I go down again? I wish something more exciting would happen. This is boring."
MANDY: "This is good. I like this. I like the fact that you're making progress. I'm excited. I like the way his arm moves (she ducks to avoid low pipes on screen). Quite impressive, but I couldn't play it for hours."
Grim Fandango
HELEN: "Superb. I like things like this. I like shooting things, it leads you into the scenario. You have to find something, secret things (she is getting visibly excited). There's a mystery. That gave me a rush of pleasure (she finds the way out of the first room). That looked like it should do something. I want to go back and see."
EMMA: "it's the kind of game where you'd suddenly realise it was 2am and you had to get up for work in the morning. I like the music that's on in the background."
MANDY: "There's so much more to see - it's a lot more interesting to look at. I like the detail. You're not just doing the same thing over and over again. It's good because this isn't the kind of game where my boyfriend could phone me up to brag about his high score. Yeah, he does that"

DREW’S VIEWS
~Words & Photos by Drew Nez~
Tumblr media
With the year of fucking 2020 in the rear view mirror, take a moment to think about all the shit we’ve had to sit and watch going on. From the crumbling state of world affairs, socially and economically, to the disconnect with our of loved ones and the ever present touch of humanity -- all of it dissipated on a dime, leading to the mandate of dehumanizing our very faces for the sake of saving each other from one another. It’s crippled many industries in unimaginable ways, although we’ve adapted (still kicking and going strong) in ways that match the perseverance that our community has always carried without question. A pertinent reminder that we can prevail, overcome, and unify -- even when the subject matter is at its darkest.
This is the introduction to a variety segment, where I can provide poetic rhetoric based on the work of musical masterminds that connect with me sonically. It’s an attempt to go over the top and paint the absolute most vivid picture for listeners that are looking for something new, different, and fresh -- maybe even busting any preconceived notions of how a musical piece sounds, in the process. I sure as fuck ain’t the typical writer with pen and quill in hand.
With the news that Bandcamp will be extending their popular “Bandcamp Fridays” well into 2021, I hope this column will shed light and understanding on new music that really does deserve your ear. Follow me now as I guide you through what I feel are a few of the most impactful compositions released over the past year.

Lord Buffalo  Tohu Wa Bohu
Tohu Wa Bohu by Lord Buffalo
I can’t place a finger on my whereabouts upon hearing this. Roaming a desolate plane on a far off planet, perhaps. What I can say is that this album perfectly depicts what that would mean. 'Tohu Wa Bohu' (2020) is the latest composition from Austin's LORD BUFFALO. It is, to me, the story of acting on nothing but instinct in search of an entity -- a higher being, perhaps -- with writhing and erratic behaviour, as well as the search for closure, perhaps even a stoic warrior soul of sorts at the brunt of an epic journey. Smooth, ambietic delivery, instrumentally and vocally -- as seamless as the fiddler at hand.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou     May Our Chambers Be Full
May Our Chambers Be Full by Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou
Consider this a kind of 'David and Goliath' soundtrack of the mind. It tends towards tales of self-indulgence, the disparate perspectives of those who live together intimately, and the dead experience of life. At times, it presents as a kind of duality -- the siren's cadence on the one hand, the wretched guide tugging at the pathos of one’s sense of spiritual direction on the other. One can liken all of the tracks to an experience of being dragged into catacomb under a spell, with the subtext of battle between the gold or filth that lies deep in the gulch of human will. All throughout, backed by an ever flowing orchestra that projects the feeling of being drug down to the deep deep, soothed into an acceptance of fate, and given the yearning to rise again to the surface.
Tumblr media
Primitive Man    Immersion
Immersion by Primitive Man
Defining depths of wrought horror, Immersion is like a gulch liquid that creeps up the walls and consumes every ounce of hope one could possibly aspire to. PRIMITIVE MAN casts the setting of being totally and absolutely lost in a space, coupled with a sense of anxious foreboding in the pursuit of hopelessness. It’s as if I’m getting coaxed into comfort, but through entrapment. A claustrophobia path set beneath the weight of a constricting tunnel, absolutely void of return.

Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol  Burger Babes...FROM OUTER SPACE!
Burger Babes...FROM OUTER SPACE! by Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol
Right out the gate, there’s a build of energy and speed in the latest adrenaline shot from RICKSHAW BILLIE'S BURGER PATROL. Like an otherworldly abduction, the almost surgically executed rhythms are enough to sweep you off your feet and violently whiplash your headspace into orbital lift off. The transitions leave my body feeling completely weightless and calm, with the occasional feeling of explosive confrontation with an alien onslaught -- writhing in vacuum, however, prevailing with defiant persistence! All of this on a machine of exquisite fortification, forged thick, riveted precise, and equipped to destroy, with the capability to ward off the gnarliest of foes until the bitter end!

Revocation Shares New Video, New Album Details
Tumblr media
Revocation has shared the first single and video from their upcoming new album The Outer Ones, on September 28 via Metal Blade Records. Watch the video to the track 'Of Unworldly Origin' directed by David Brodsky. https://youtu.be/eNqO2Cd-klA Frontman Dave Davidson commented on the album: "I knew that I wanted to go in a darker direction, and this is our most death metal album to date.”. "Sometimes when death metal bands go down the prog route, they lose some of that edge, but we wanted to keep the aggression at the forefront of what we do while still pushing our boundaries." Moving away from the societal and historical themes that informed "Great Is Our Sin", this time Davidson has immersed himself in the fantastic, evoking one of the great writers of the sci-fi/horror genre. "The title is my ode to H.P. Lovecraft and the entities of pure cosmic horror that rule that universe he created. Since the new music we were writing was so evil and spacey in sections, it seemed to be the right title to fit the overall vibe. But while the lyrical content is largely influenced by such writings, in every allegory there is, of course, some reflection of the real world, so I enjoy writing in a way that could have one overlaying meaning and then another deeper, symbolic meaning as well."  Pre-order the album here:

Kuwalla – Paint It Gold
Kuwalla’s single, “Paint It Gold,” is an upbeat and charged indie-rock number.
The bands' bright feel is reminiscent of artists such as The Kooks, Courtney Barnett, and All Time Low, to mention but a few. Their sunny vibe also recalls the likes of The Wombats, who also share the Kuwalla’s love of Aussie-animal band names!
The song opens with a very energetic staccato riff and an over-driven electric guitar sound, the track soon after launches into a very up-tempo rhythm. This makes me think of some of the earliest albums of bands like Yellowcard, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At The Disco and Ataris, to mention but a few. However, this is not just a “throwback” release. The music also has a more contemporary vibe to it, with a fresh indie-rock twist.
The composition of “Paint It Gold” has a youthful energy. The melody has a catchy-pop vibe that will have the listener singing the chorus long after the track has finished. The raw guitar tones also have an earthy feel that compliments the organic recording and performance style.
The production aesthetic of the track is contemporary and crisp. It was produced and mixed by Johnny Liu from Catacomb Recordings Co. The track was mastered by Black Dog Mastering studio.
Kuwalla’s composition has a noisy and atmospheric feel. The soundscape they create with the multi-layered guitars and vocals is expansive and immersive. The track has a noisy quality, yet everything is clear and well rounded. Overall, the production is balanced and fresh, highlighting the charismatic feel of the band.

Environmental Engineering
Sustainability and Industrial Ecology - UTT, Troyes, France
I’m currently sitting in Negra Cafe in the heart of Porto, Portugal. The last of my Michigan friends have just hopped on the metro back to the airport to make their way back to Paris, and then on their own ways. I’ve made it to the scariest point of my trip thus far -- travelling completely alone for 3 weeks.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated you on my travels, and boy has a lot happened in the past week and a half.
Our last week in Troyes was a bittersweet one to say the least. We mixed studying for exams with time in the university’s park remarking how memorable the quaint, quirky town of Troyes will be for us. From all-night talks in the dorms to 45 minute treks to the city center at least 3 times a week, we all concluded that this experience was one we will never have again in our lives, and we wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.
Tumblr media
Le Couer de Troyes (The Heart of Troyes)
We also realized that integration of studying and real-life experience enhances learning in ways we didn’t know were possible. As we studied industrial ecology, ecodesign, and circular economy, we saw French society working towards a greener economy in the wind-farms of rural Champagne. As we basked in the beauty of Parisian monuments we recognized the names of famous kings and valiant battles. Being immersed in our studies taught us that the world can be your textbook as long as you are willing to open it.
Our last weekend together as a program was spent in Paris during the Fête de la Musique, France’s largest music festival that features free musical performances on nearly every street corner all day and night on June 21st. The weekend was free for us to explore the city and soak in everything that it had to offer.

Our programs’s last night together. Every minute of the past six weeks has been..full. Full of learning, joy, friendship, exhaustion, elation, exploration.
As I move on with the rest of my trip, it’s hard for me to fully grasp how much these past six weeks have changed me as a person. Our engineering class opened my eyes to the vast opportunities we have to engineer a better world. Exploring different corners of the world showed me that as people we are more similar than we think, and that our differences are what make life so beautiful. And the people on this trip...we’ll just say they will always have an incredibly special place in my heart.
To UMich, my family, and all the friends I’ve made on this trip: I thank you with everything that I have.
Updates from Porto to come very soon; thank you for checking in!
