10 NOVEMBER 2013 || The Duchess of Cambridge attended the annual Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph in London along with Prince William and other members of the Royal Family.

Jason is 9 years old.

Today was his favorite day of the year. Even better than his birthday. He managed to find a bedsheet that was white and (sort of) clean, and had painted 2 black circles on it. He wasn’t going to cut holes in a perfectly good bedsheet. Who knows when he’d find another one? In Crime Alley lucky finds like these were rare. He got up, put the sheet in his backpack and left for Burnley. It was close, and yet the place wasn’t as crime infested as its surroundings. The rich guys there had the cops in their pockets, so they patrolled extra there. But that just made it perfect for today.

Halloween.

The day he could get candy for free.

When Jason got to Burnley, he already saw several other kids going around with their parents. He didn’t want to admit it, but it stung. He wanted to go with his mom too, but Catherine had been too out of it, and he didn’t even know where his dad was. Prison, most likely. It didn’t matter. He put on his sheet. Dressed as a ghost he’d try to get as much candy as he could.

Suddenly he heard someone shout: SPOOK! The next thing he knew he was covered in a weird, green glowing goop. 2 people in weird suits pointed weapons on him. Jason tried to run, but the goop was slippery and he fell. Suddenly a boy stood in front of him. The boy scolded his parents, explaining that Jason wasn’t a ghost but a boy in a costume. Why did he have to explain that? It was Halloween! Of course he was wearing a costume! Ghosts don’t even exist! Jason took of the sheet. He was about to cry, it was ruined! How was he supposed to enjoy today at all? No one would give him anything without a costume! While a girl with red hair scolded the 2 adults that had attacked him, the boy held out his hand to help Jason up. He apologized for his parents. They are weird. Jason was about to go home, when the boy had an idea. His parents brought hazmat suits for him and Jazzy. If they wear that they can pretend to be ghostbusters together! They’ll get more candy if they wear a co-op costume. Jason thinks about it, and agrees. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A few minutes later they are both dressed up, wearing weird suits and weirder weapons strapped to their belts. As they go around collecting candy Jason asks what’s up with his parents. He gets Halloween is awesome, but no one should be so into it that they’d try to hurt a kid. The boy sheepishly rubs his neck. His parents aren’t dressed up. They are really ghostbusters. He doesn’t like it. The other kids at school think it’s weird and bully him for it. This kid Dash locked him up in the school’s janitor closet once. It took 3 hours before someone found him. Jason advices him to punch the guy in the nose. The boy doesn’t think that’s a good idea. Jason advices then to finish it off with a kick in the groin.

After they have raided the district, Jason and the boy return to the van. Jazzy tells her brother to get in before their parents forget him and leave. He says goodbye to Jason and that he had great fun! Jason can keep the suit, maybe he can use it again next year? As the van drives off, Jason notices that the kid left his bag behind. Jason feels bad for him, but now he has twice as much candy! He promises to enjoy it twice as much, and takes it home. In the van Jazzy asks where Danny’s candy went. Danny says he gave it to his friend. He seemed hungry, and with dad driving he’d only throw it back up anyway.

Mr and Mrs Mountain: In Conversation with Steve and Jo Harrington

(National Geographic, 1993)

I sit down with the Harringtons on a sunny day in December in the living room of their Boulder Colorado home. They’ve just moved in, and they apologize for the few stray boxes still littering the dark wood floors.

“We’re not used to having all this space,” admits Steve Harrington, going on to describe how he and his wife spent most of the last three years living in sublets, tents, and the errant hostel, jumping from Boulder, where they’ve decided to call home, to various parts of the world for an awe-inspiring roster of expeditions. But their most frequently-visited location is Everest, of course.

“We leave around mid-March and can usually expect to be back in June. It’s become a pretty well-oiled machine by now.” What Harrington is referring to is their expedition outfit, Summit Trek, that has been in business since 1991. It’s 1993 when I sit down with the Harringtons, and they’re confirming their client list for an Everest expedition… in 1996. The next three years have already been all booked up. Why, you ask, does this young yet affable couple have a veritable waitlist to join their outfit? It’s simple, they’ve never lost a single client on any of their ascents, a rare feat for repeat Everest expedition guides. 

“We really take a lot of pride in the safety of our trips. There’s more and more outfits every year that are willing to take clients up Everest, but it’s always been the getting back down that’s the tricky part,” says Jo Harrington, sitting on the arm of their worn leather couch, her arm draped loosely over her husband’s shoulders. She carries herself with a great deal more poise than her twenty-six years may allow her, a sort of wry steel to the way she speaks, chin tilted down, daunting and demure at the same time, as if Catherine Hepburn and Clint Eastwood had a lovechild with a particular athletic prowess. She wears her hair in two short braids, flyaways framing sharp eyes and dark brows. In a pair of rumpled khaki cargo pants and a thermal with the patagonia logo stitched into the chest (she has been sponsored by the brand for four years now), there is still a strange elegance to her, carried in quick hand gestures and a permanently rasped voice. First brought into the climbing world’s consciousness at the age of sixteen for taking home gold in the 1983 Climbing National Championships in her age division, Harrington, nee Taylor, would go on to rack up an impressive resume of climbs. She currently has conquered five of the seven continental summits, and still holds the women’s speed record for climbing El Cap. 

“I’m going for Steve’s record the next time I get out to Yosemite,” quips Jo while her husband grins up at her. He currently holds the men’s speed record on El Cap. 

Indeed, the Harringtons have become darlings of the climbing world, meeting in 1990 on both of their first ascents of Everest, and falling into a whirlwind relationship that would see them going into business together within the year as co-guides of their very own expedition outfit.

“I just wouldn’t leave her alone, basically. Asked her where she was going after Katmandhu and she said Boulder, and I said alright, I’m going to follow this woman wherever she leads me.”

“He was easy to be around. To climb with, to talk with, to suffer with. I knew that I could trust him as my partner from the start.” And that trust Jo speaks to seems to be the secret ingredient to what has made their outfit so successful. 

“For an ascent to go as well as it can, there has to be almost seamless communication between guides. There can’t be any doubt that you have each other’s backs, that you’re going to do your job to the best of your ability because that’s the level of care and respect you have for each other,” says Steve, tucking a long brown lock of hair behind his ear. He is the picture of a dirtbag, reformed (his words), with his long hair and single silver hoop in his ear, a perpetual tan to his skin from all the years spent out in the weather, a ruggedly bright smile and dark eyes that crinkle knowingly as he speaks. He plays with the wedding band on his left ring finger, spinning it around as he talks with a quiet confidence. Harrington rose up in the climbing world through a sort of scrappy perseverance, spending his teen years hoofing it around the United States and climbing whatever he could get his hands on as fast as he could. Besides El Cap, he currently holds the speed record for the Moose’s Tooth in Alaska, as well as for Kings Peak in Utah. These days, he’s less interested in speed than he is in altitude. 

“There’s no going fast on something like Everest, not if you want to come back down in one piece.” Jo nods at her husband’s words, and it is clear that this couple holds a deep respect for the mountain they summit every year, with a group of nine people that pay them to lead them to the peak. It would seem this respect is also part of what has brought them so much success as expedition guides, with Outside Magazine declaring Summit Trek as the “premier” Everest outfit for climbers who want the best of the best experience on the mountain. The going rate for an individual to join one of their expeditions certainly reflects this reputation. Excluding airfare and personal equipment, it will run you $75,000 to join a Summit Trek expedition. For context, this is almost double what most outfits charge, and $10,000 more than what Adventure Consultants, one of the other more reputable outfits, ask. When asked about this price point, Jo smiles.

“We understand that it’s a steep price we’re asking, but it reflects the quality of the experience we provide. People also have to understand that a good portion of that money is put right back into the business for permits and equipment. You get what you pay for, and when it comes to something like Everest, I’d like to think people are willing to pay more in order to get more out of the experience.” Her argument certainly seems to stand. Currently, with the additional help of infamous climber Eddie Munson as their other co-guide, respected mountaineer Robin Buckley running base camp communication, and climber-turned-physician Nancy Wheeler, the Summit Trek team has successfully taken 27 people to the Everest summit and brought them back down safely, with plans to take another 27 up in the next three years. 

I asked the couple, who have now been married for just shy of a year, what it’s been like working together in such a dangerous context. They both seem to find this question amusing, sharing a quick 

glance between them before Jo answers the question.

“I know I wouldn’t do this work with anyone else. We’re partners in every sense of the word and I love getting to do this work with my best friend.” Steve rests a hand on her knee, nodding and adding his own thoughts.

“Yes, it’s dangerous, but we’re a particular kind of people that seek out that kind of danger. We get to see and do crazy things together, it’s amazing.   I think we’re very lucky to get to do this.” 

My last question for the seemingly invincible couple, do they see themselves slowing down any time soon? Jo laughs.

“Well, you can only go up that mountain so many times before it takes its pound of flesh from you. We’re certainly not going to do this forever, and I think we’re definitely starting to think about putting down more roots for the future. But for now, we really love the work we do.”

 — her parents are german-american. she was born in marina in a big old farmhouse. her great-grandfather moved to america as an immigrant and worked on a plantation, made his way up cos he could speak a lot of languages and therefore win more people over. putnams have always been good at persuasion. for the last two generations, putnam men have owned the farm rather than worked on it, handled finances, kept the books and stocks, and do very little of the dirty work. the putnam farm is a big supplier in the island's meat industry. they have a competition for “the biggest hog in prospect hill” every summer.

— both of her parents had large personalities, so alma’s never really been shy around adults, even as a kid she’d speak to them in a forthright, confident manner, and because she was always surrounded by adults, she’s always seemed a bit wise beyond her years. up until high school, she didn’t really have any friends. other kids thought of her as an oddball, a grown up in an eleven-year-old’s body, and she thought of them as immature and beneath her. rather than sleepovers, bike rides, and making mud pies, alma put her time instead into bettering herself, learning to speak several languages, learning the clarinet, practising ballet, horse-riding. she was a child who always had to have an activity or project on the go, or she would become listless and nightmarish for the carousel of au pairs and nannies hired to care for her.

— upon graduating high school, she was accepted to juliard to study ballet and contemporary dance, but an injury meant she had to turn down her place. she’s still bitter about this and takes every opportunity to bring up the fact tht she could totally have gone to julliard (but maybe she shd have jst taken the charles melton route and done riverdale instead)

— after turning down juliard bcos of said injury, alma went to columbia uni and majored in classical civilisation. she can read ancient greek and latin, but she also speaks french and beginner’s italian. she studied classics cos she thinks it makes her sound smart, but actually doesn’t really care for latin and just loves learning about feckless hedonism and the festivals of bacchus and writing about how all women in myth are literally forgotten or abused for their bodies and the greek fascination with cannibalism. anyway she spent most of her time at uni doing ballet and theatre anyway

— she’s very much a consolidation of every character in the secret history. has a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs. obsessed with w.h. auden and the beat poets. the film to watch if you want to understand alma is thoroughbreds. there are a lot of parallels between lily (anya’s character) and alma, but she also embodies amanda’s cold disposition and ability to cry on cue.

— alma’s idea of a romantic gesture: exchanging vials of blood so that each of you can carry a piece of your lover around on your neck with you always, or being gifted a ruby-hilted dagger engraved with her initials. she wants the fucked up kind of love that megan fox and machine gun kelly have. her love language is gifts (sociopath) and words of affirmation.  

— she will put everything else on hold for success. she lets things consume her with obsession. at university, her academic merit and her reputation within the theatre society was all she could focus on. she loves the smell of libraries, the ancient smoke of learning, of feeling like old wine in a new bottle reincarnated from the bones of some old, dead witchy woman who invented a cure for cowpox or somethin. as well as the practical elements of ballet, she loves the theory of it. she’ll read every book she can find, despite knowing u can’t learn a skill like that from a book. she will stop at nothing 2 get what she wants. watch ur damn backs.

— pretentious motherfucker. loves poetry, especially the romantics, loves the morbid poets even moreseo, edgar allen poe, sylvia plath, allen ginsberg, she just loves them all. can’t get enough. her favourite films are like…. wanky artfilm independent european cinema. especially french new wave. loved umbrellas of cherbourg and her clothing style is based a lot around looks in that film.  “what do you think of goddard’s work??” while snorting a line off someone’s sink at 5am on a school night, but you can bet she’ll make it to that 9am ballet class smelling of rose petals, looking pristine and like butter wouldn’t melt on her tongue.

— very intelligent and beautiful and knows both of those facts. loves to play devil’s advocate and growing up she was always an active member of her school’s debate society. humanitarian, vegan. judgemental but takes great care not to appear so. extremely petty and vindictive. must come first. obsessively devours mystery and thriller novels. she herself is a gillian flynn book waiting to happen.

— alma definitely tries to be an enigma. she wants to be mysterious and unreadable because that’s what books have taught her makes women desirable and interesting and cool. very amy dunne in the way she expertly reinvents herself to suit her audience, when she wants to impress

— performance-wise, one of alma’s most commendable traits is her sheer tenacity and lack of inhibition – she is willing to do whatever it takes to climb to the top, and kick as many other people down as necessary on her way there. this unhinged hunger for success was evidenced when alma played tamora in titus andronicus. feeling the presentation of one of shakespeare’s most terrifying women was ‘pussy-footed’ and dulled down for a male audience, alma took matters into her own hands, and during the famous banquet scene where tamora is fed her own sons, she ate a pig’s heart live on stage – receiving both awestruck and horrified press reviews for her performance – and getting expelled from her vermont boarding school. she was 14 at the time.

— has an addictive personality. seems unable to do anything in a small dose, she has to let it utterly consume her. with sports, she’s fiercely competitive, ice skates, played lacrosse at school, was is a hockey player. with alcohol, it’s never a shot, it’s a whole bottle – wine or whiskey – she’ll be table dancing before the night’s up and making out with someone she’ll regret in the morning but alma putnam takes no prisoners.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s Stats - First Quarter

How the tables have turned since this time last year. In the first three months of 2022, the Duchess of Cambridge has completed 66 engagements, averaging around 22 a month, more than double the amount she completed in the same period last year. Her busiest month was March, during which she completed 41 engagements. She undertook 9 engagements in January and appeared in three official photos released for her birthday, while in February she completed 16 engagements, appeared in four official videos or photos, and was sighted once. She was also sighted once in March and appeared in two official photos or videos. This has been her 3rd busiest January, 2nd busiest February, and busiest March ever. More importantly, after April 2014, this March has been her second busiest month of all time.

Of her 23 patronages, she has visited or completed work for 6, totalling 24 engagements in total. In January, Catherine completed seven engagements on behalf of her patronages. 4 of those were for the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, while one was for the Foundling Museum, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and NHS Charities Together. In February, she undertook ten engagements for the Royal Foundation, as well as two engagements for the Rugby Football Union, and an engagement for the Rugby Football League. In March, she completed four engagements on behalf of the Royal Foundation.

Of her 66 engagements, 24 have been solo and 36 accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Cambridge. Her engagements have taken part in a variety of countries, including England (25) and Wales (4). She has also undertaken multiple foreign visits, completing engagements in Denmark, Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. Of her UK-based engagements, 17 took place in London, while four were either telephone or video meetings. She also undertook engagements in Lancashire, Abergavenny, and Blaenavon.

The majority of her engagements have been diplomatic in theme, mostly thanks to her overseas visits - with eighteen engagements focusing on that area specifically. 10 of her engagements have focused on her Early Years Initiative in general, while 7 engagements have been focused on the outdoors. 5 of her engagements apiece have been themed around children and young people and Covid-19 in theme, while 4 have been specifically linked to both culture and the military. She has also undertaken engagements around the themes of sport, mental health, and the Commonwealth. Several of her engagements did not fit into the theme headings I have created.

Clotheswise, her most worn identified designer has been Alexander McQueen, followed by Catherine Walker, although she has worn many unidentified looks. Her most carried bag designer was Mulberry, followed by Anya Hindmarch and Ferragamo (and unidentified bags!). Her most-worn shoe designer is believed to be Gianvito Rossi, closely followed by Emmy London and Jimmy Choo. Her most worn identified jewellery designer was Spells of Love, with 6 wears, followed by Maria Black with 4, and Astley Clarke with 3. She has also worn 5 items borrowed from the Queen and 7 which were previously owned by Diana. Eight jewellery items have been unidentified. When it comes to hats, Catherine was seen in five hats, with Lock and Co creating two of them.

While the royals were unable to gather like usual on Christmas Day in 2020, we'd be remiss not to squeeze in one pre-Christmas look from the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate Middleton and Prince William joined Queen Elizabeth for an event to thank those volunteering during the Christmas season. The Duchess wore a fur-lined green coat and dazzling teardrop earrings.

2019

The Duchess of Cambridge chose a palette of grey and green for her 2019 Christmas ensemble, including a fur-trimmed coat, green fascinator, and a matching clutch and heels—but her coordinating didn't end there. A young Princess Charlotte sported a similarly-hued, double-breasted jacket.

2018

It's not often that the royals step out in bold patterns, but when they do, it's usually a tartan or plaid. For her 2017 Christmas look, the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear a festive peacoat by Miu Miu—punctuated by simple black accessories, including a fur hat, gloves, tights, and suede pumps.

2016

Kate Middleton brought her family to her hometown for holidays in 2016—and the Cambridges are seen here in coordinating maroons while heading off to a Christmas Day church service. The Duchess chose a fur trimmed coat, with matching pumps and a (slightly) brighter suede clutch.

For Christmas Day in 2015, the Duchess of Cambridge bundled up in a hunter green Max Mara coat, high black boots, a simple fascinator, and black gloves.

2012

Christmas observance included Communion and carols. Many will recall that Kate and William elected to spend part/all of the holiday with Kate’s family at their home in Berkshire, instead of joining the Queen and other Royals at Sandringham. The Middleton gathering was expected to be lower key and more relaxing than the annual Sandringham festivities. Kate opted for pieces some will remember seeing previously, including her Celeste coat by Hobb’s.

2011

— both of her parents had large personalities, so alma’s never really been shy around adults, even as a kid she’d speak to them in a forthright, confident manner, and because she was always surrounded by adults, she’s always seemed a bit wise beyond her years. up until high school, she didn’t really have any friends. other kids thought of her as an oddball, a grown up in an eleven-year-old’s body, and she thought of them as immature and beneath her. rather than sleepovers, bike rides, and making mud pies, alma put her time instead into bettering herself, learning to speak several languages, learning the clarinet, practising ballet, horse-riding. she was a child who always had to have an activity or project on the go, or she would become listless and nightmarish for the carousel of au pairs and nannies hired to care for her.

— performance-wise, one of alma’s most commendable traits is her sheer tenacity and lack of inhibition – she is willing to do whatever it takes to climb to the top, and kick as many other people down as necessary on her way there. this unhinged hunger for success was evidenced when alma played tamora in titus andronicus. feeling the presentation of one of shakespeare’s most terrifying women was ‘pussy-footed’ and dulled down for a male audience, alma took matters into her own hands, and during the famous banquet scene where tamora is fed her own sons, she ate a pig’s heart live on stage – receiving both awestruck and horrified press reviews for her performance – and getting expelled from her english boarding school. she was 14 at the time.

– although she’s only been an official member of the company for a year, she used to go to a boarding school close by and often visited the furore campus on her lunch hour to watch them dance in the hope that she might one day become one of them. she ended up going back to the united states to attend julliard, dropping out due to her injury, and then attending columbia. coming back to the u.k. was simply her path because she had nothing better to do. she missed the city, the way she’d romanticised the rain and the fog and the suffering she’d found there, so while she’s relatively new to the company there may well be people who remember her visiting it as a child.

– someone who views her, evil twisted little thing that she is, as a muse. maybe they’re another dancer, maybe they’re in the orchestra, but when she dances it fills them with inspiration. i feel like when she’s not limited by the constraints of her school choreography her dancing is a lot more contemporary and avant garde, w like, abrupt, violent and jerky, motions. very florence welch choreography, particularly big god, that kinda thing

The Royal House of Trastámara (Redux)

So since the Trastámara family has become even more complete with the addition of Juan, I figured I'd make redo of this post! So here are the daughters and son of the Royal House of Trastámara.

Isabella of Aragon, Queen of Portugal

The eldest child of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castille, Isabella was named after her mother and became the heir presumptive to the Crown of Castille after her mother took the throne from her uncle Henry IV of Castille. She was betrothed and married to Prince Afonso, heir and only son of John II of Portugal. Her marriage with the prince was a happy one but unfortunately, Afonso died due to a riding accident and Isabella vowed never to marry again. Until six years later, after the death of John II of Portugal, his brother, Manuel I of Portugal, usurped the throne and asked for Isabella's hand in marriage. Her parents offered Maria's hand instead out of respect to Isabella's wishes to never marry again but Manuel refused. Eventually, she married him and became queen consort of Portugal. She later gave birth to her only son, Miguel de Paz, Prince of Portugal, and due to her poor health and constant travelling during the later stages of her pregnancy, she died within an hour of her son's birth.

In her second life, Isabella owns and works in her own music shop located just below her flat. She sometimes fills in for Maria on the drums whenever she's sick and just generally enjoys the simple things in her second life. She's grown to be very passive due in this life and can be quite sarcastic at times which may come off as rude but she means well. However, bad mouth her younger sister she'll go after you.

John, Prince of Asturias

was the only son of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon who survived to adulthood. John was born in Seville in 1478 to the sovereigns of Castile, Isabella I and Ferdinand II. John's birth helped consolidate Isabella's position as sovereign as she had given birth to a legitimate male heir. At the time of his birth, he had one elder sister Isabella; his younger sisters were Joanna, Maria, and Catherine. During his early years, Isabella and Ferdinand came to plan a double alliance with Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, for the marriage of his children, Archduke Philip the Handsome and Archduchess Margaret of Austria. On 20 January 1495 in Antwerp, a preliminary alliance, which included a wedding of Prince John with Maximilian's daughter was agreed. Similarly, Maximilian's son Philip and John's sister Joanna were to be married. Joanna left Spain to marry Philip the Handsome in late 1496. Philip's sister, Margaret of Austria, aged 18, married John on April 3 the following year in Burgos Cathedral. It was a good marriage and John was devoted to Margaret. On 4 October 1497, a messenger came to John's parents and informed them that their son lay dangerously ill in Salamanca. He and his wife Margaret had arrived a week earlier, on the way to the wedding of his older sister in Portugal. Ferdinand was with his son as John died in the arms of his former tutor Fray Diego Deza. Two months later, on December 8, the Princess of Asturias gave birth to their only child, a stillborn girl.

When he was reincarnated, he found that he was blind in one eye but that didn’t stop him from having the time of his life. He’s very fun loving, happy, energetic and a bit oblivious at times. He’s married to Margaret of Austria, who he calls Maggie. He works as a costume designer for SIX the musical, mainly so he can see his baby sister more. He now goes by Juan rather than John as a ay to stay in touch with his spanish roots.

Joanna of Castille, Queen of Castille and Aragon

The second eldest daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castille. Known historically as 'Joanna the Mad' or 'Juana la Loca' in spanish, she was Queen of Castille and Queen of Aragon. Modern Spain evolved from the union of these two kingdoms. Joanna was married by arrangement to Philip the Handsome, Archduke of Austria of the House of Habsburg. Following the deaths of her brother, John, Prince of Asturia, her elder sister Isabella, and her nephew Miguel, Joanna became the heir presumtive to the crowns of Castile and Aragon. When her mother died, Joanna became Queen of Castile. Her father proclaimed himself Governor and Administrator of Castile. Despite being the ruling Queen of Castile, Joanna had little effect on national policy during her reign as she was declared insane and imprisoned in the Royal Convent of Santa Clars in Tordesillas under the orders of her father, who ruled as regent until his death, when she inherited his kingdom as well. When her son Charles I ruled as king, she was nominally co-monarch but remained imprisoned until her death.

In her second life, Joanna or Juana as she preferred to be called, came back a troubled teen. In her misfortune, she was taken in by a very religious and abusive family. The father, named Fernando, would often lock her up in a dark room whenever she had mental breakdowns which are usually bouts of painful laughter. She finally escaped the house and was homeless for years until she found her youngest sister, Catalina. Catalina helped her by housing her until she got back on her feet and got the help she needed for her mental wellbeing.

Maria of Aragon, Queen of Portugal

The third eldest daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castille. After the untimely death of her older sister, she married her husband Manuel I of Portugal and replaced her as queen of Portugal. As a queen, she wasn't that involved in politics at all and her focus consists mainly of religious teachings, sewing and child rearing. Although, she is sometimes credited for convincing her husband into acts of 'mercy' whenever he flew into a fit of rage. During her marriage and reign as queen, she gave birth to ten children. Eight of whom reached to adulthood. She was constantly pregnant most of her adult life. Only having a few months in between pregnancies and giving birth to her tenth child caused her untimely demise.

Reincarnated into the modern world, Maria woke as a young woman in her early twenties. She's a laid back woman and loves the experience of a good party or a night at a club. She's not as religious as she was in her past life. Not atheistic per se. She'll go to church if she feels like it and even wears a rosary bracelet as some sort of connection to her religion was raised and taught in. She has a friend with benefits that she has fun with weekly. She is 100% childfree in her second life because ten pregnancies in her past life was way more than enough for her. Despite being childfree, she still adores children so she had applied for uni and took up an education course. Graduating after four years and landing her first teaching job at a private academy where Hal and his siblings and cousins go to. That was where she reunited with Catalina during a PTA meeting and the two sisters have never been happier to meet again in their second lives. They then set up a meeting where she reunites with their older sisters, Isabella and Juana.

Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England

The youngest daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castille. Catherine was three years old when she was betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, heir apparent to the English throne. They married but Arthur died five months later. She was the first known female ambassador in European history. Catherine subsequently married Arthur's younger brother, Henry VIII. For six months, she served as regent of England while Henry VIII was in France. In 1525, Henry VIII was infatuated with Anne Boleyn and dissatisfied that his marriage to her had produced no surviving sons, leaving their daughter, the future Mary I of England, as heir presumptive at a time when there was no established precedent for a woman on the throne. He sought to have their marriage annulled, setting in motion a chain of events that led to England's schism with the Catholic Church. When Pope Clement VII refused to annul the marriage, Henry defied him by assuming supremacy over religious matters. Their marriage was consequently declared invalid and Henry married Anne on the judgement of clergy in England, without reference to the pope. Catherine refused to accept Henry as supreme head of the Church in England and considered herself the king's rightful wife and queen, attracting much popular sympathy. Despite this, she was acknowledged only as dowager princess of Wales by Henry. After being banished from court by Henry, she lived out the remainder of her life at Kimbolton Castle, and died of cancer.

In her second life, Catherine or Catalina as she prefers to be called to avoid confusion with the other C/Katherines, found herself in a house with her ex husband's five other wives. Tensions were high on the first few months, especially between her and Anne Boleyn but the six soon got things settled and managed to create a family dynamic within their shared home. They created a musical about their stories and garnered quite the success. She mostly acts as the head matriarch of the house. Making sure that everyone was alright and knew not to cause any trouble that might get them hurt. The addition of their children being reincarnated made her even more attentive, caring and loving to her new found family.

St. Patrick’s Day through the years

Every year since the Duke of Cambridge has been made Colonel of the Irish Guards, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge hands out Shamrocks for the troops at Calvary Barracks to pin to their uniform for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. This tradition was started by Queen Alexandra and was later taken on by the Queen Mother and until more recently, before Catherine took on the role, Princess Anne. It’s a staple in the Cambridge’s calendar, though this year the event may be in peril of cancellation to help stop the spread of coronavirus. As of yet, nothing has been cancelled. Either way, let’s take a look back at what Catherine wore. 

2012

2012 was the first year Kate handed out shamrocks and she fittingly wore the color green. This green coat is by Emilia Wickstead and the way the pleats drape is a dream. Her rich brown Emmy London and Lock and Co hat complemented this green beautifully.

Kate’s gold shamrock brooch with the singular emerald in the middle is by Cartier and owned by the Irish Guards; it was loaned to Kate for the occasion She also accessorized with her oval green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, a Christmas present from Will, and her diamond by the yard Tiffany and Co bracelet. 

2013

Catherine was very pregnant with Prince George in 2013 but she still surprised us with a rewear. Instead of wearing this green Emilia Wickstead piece as a coatdress, she ditched the belt and wore it as a true coat over a black turtle neck and black tights. Keeping with the back theme, she wore a black fascinator by Lock and Co, black suede pumps by Episode, and black gloves by Cornelia James. 

Pinned to her lapel once again is the Irish Guards gold Cartier brooch. Other than that, her jewelry was simple; she wore unidentified diamond and emerald earrings. 

2014

In 2014 Kate delivered a new coat to us in, unsurprisingly, the color green. This piece is by Hobbs and it’s belted with a belt that remains unidentified to this day. That fun green hat is by Gina Foster. The shoes and clutch are both by Emmy London and are not green but in fact a very dark gray--I believe it’s actually called carbon gray. 

Kate accessories the look with her two tone Tissot watch, her cushion cut green amethyst drop earrings from Kiki McDonough, and the Irish Guards Cartier Gold Shamrock brooch (I swear its hiding behind those real shamrocks). 

2015

I think this is the only year Kate wore something other than green! There isn’t even a bit of green in sight except those shamrocks. While pregnant with Princess Charlotte Kate chose a coat by Catherine Walker and the same shoes and hat from 2012: Emmy heels and Lock and Co hat. She’s also holding a brown Emmy clutch while wearing brown Cornelia James gloves.

For earrings she chose her citrine tear drop earrings from Kiki McDonough and paired it with the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier Shamrock brooch. 

2017

Kate did not hand out the Shamrocks in 2016 so we’re just right ahead into 2017 and this might be my favorite look yet. Kate debuted a Catherine Walker coat, obviously in green, with green velvet cuffs, pocket flaps, and collar--peeking out of her cuffs is her Cartier watch. Her shoes are Emmy, a different style from previous years as the toe is pointed and there is no platform. Kate had a clutch by Etui--it was a black leather clutch but she was barely pictured with it. Will and Kate jetted off to start their Paris visit after this event and she was pictured holding it during their arrival also. 

The hat is Sylvia Fletcher for Lock and Co, her earrings are Monica Vinader, and again, she’s wearing the Irish Guards gold shamrock brooch. 

2018

Catherine was very pregnant with Prince Louis and chose this green Catherine Walker coat she debuted earlier in the year while visiting Sweden. The collar and cuffs are a lovely black faux fur while her gloves are Cornelia James and her sturdy block heels are a favorite by Tod’s. 

Affixed to the fur collar is the Irish Guards shamrock brooch. Kate is also rewearing her Gina Foster hat with her green tourmaline and green amethyst earrings from Kiki McDonough, earrings which were a gift from Will on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth. 

2019

2019 brought us Kate’s first Alexander McQueen coat for St. Patrick’s day and no surprises, it’s green. Her shoes are a block heel in black suede byGianvito Rossi and the green hat is thought to be Lock and Co. Again, gloves are thought to be Cornelia James. 

As usual, Kate is wearing the Irish Guard’s gold Cartier shamrock brooch and her own green tourmaline and green amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings which were a gift from William on the occasion of Charlotte’s birth. 

That’s all for St. Patrick’s day through the years! As of posting this the parade is scheduled to continue as usual on Sunday but I’m sure the government is monitoring the situation closely and would only cancel if they felt continuing as planned would be a detriment to public health.
