Worm fans are really bad at making the connection between "Cauldron is really ruthless" and "Cauldron regards all parahumans as numbers on a spreadsheet at best, livestock at worst". The mentality is that Cauldron is only ruthless when they choose the Renegade option in a specific situation. The idea that their ruthlessness is systemic doesn't register

I guess that explanation makes some sense, but also, its so central to the story's themes that Cauldron isn't just mean or something, but in fact systematic and unrelentingly ruthless in their pursuit of any chance to save humanity. The way Cauldron mirrors how the entities operate, the fact that they control the PRT/Protectorate, Doc Mom genuinely not remembering who Sveta is, etc. There's a lot there, and it all impacts the narrative!

I could even kind of see how someone would miss that if they were caught up in the personal tragedy of Doc Mom and Contessa... except Worm fans are also really bad at realizing that Cauldron is run by two or three people who gave up their entire lives at very young ages and are now desperately throwing things at the wall hoping just one of them will stick so that this won't all have been for nothing.

They're somehow simultaneously overestimating and underestimating the inhumanity of cauldron, and I think it has a lot to do with the whole "one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic", and "banality of evil" thing. Seeing Contessa curbstomp the found family that is Faultline's crew feels horrific because of how visceral and small scale it is. Meanwhile, even if we intellectually know that Cauldron is treating human lives as abstract numbers like currency, it doesn't stick in some people's brains the same way. Or at least that's my best guess.

The real take away of this though is that Worm fans are bad at book.

I want a fanfic with like. merlin and arthur realising their feelings for each other too late, once arthur is already married. and then it hurts, but there's nothing they can do. OR. merlin pining with unrequited love. or. a scenario where gwen and arthur get married but true to the myth gwen goes away with lancelot, and arthur lets her go. and then realises that maybe his true love was. someone. else

(I have other headcanons that basically imply it can dissolve you completely and has a preprogrammed idea of what the ideal body of any race looks like and will use that and a comparison of your own body to, uh, fix any apparent problems you might have, even if they aren't life-threatening, but that's just a little nasty treat I added for fun, and this never happens to link because purah and robbie have morals.i also have compared it to pair dedeni for. reasons. 👍)

The Black Cauldron is like, so good??? Everyone is talking about how dark it is and how it sucks but I completely disagree I thought it was amazing?!?!

Reading The High King right now, so I’m on my Prydain phase again. The more of these books I read the more annoyed I am the Black Cauldron for butchering everything that made the source material great. Okay like for one Gurgi is incredibly annoying in the movie but in the books starts out like that but like actually becomes a pretty likable character. Like he had a character arc in the first book and becomes like super loyal to Taran.

For those who don’t know, it’s a board game in which everyone takes on the role of a different House managing the kingdom behind a puppet king, designed to continue over multiple sessions. You draw cards with scenarios, often part of an ongoing storyline, and vote on how to respond to them. The fun comes from the absolutely depraved arguments you are forced to make to support your secret agenda by getting people to vote your way, and also the fact that you get to sign stickers and put them on the board.
