As an addition re: "Repressed urges"--it's actually literally the opposite. You're so obsessed that you might do this terrible thing that you can't stop thinking about doing it. Since OCD has a lot of magical thinking about thoughts being crimes, this is REALLY distressing!
Usual examples include religious folks with intrusive blasphemy thoughts (yo) and parents with intrusive thoughts of harming their child. It's the most terrifying thing we can think of, and...OCD will not let us stop thinking about it.
Medication good. Medication for OCD very very good.
thinking about how I've seen OCD get talked about now, but haven't really seen many posts that actually explain what it is. And like, obviously people shouldn't get all their info about mental conditions from posts, but u can't deny that internet communities and stuff play a major role in people recognizing and putting names to their own experiences.
But like since the general public has like absolutely no idea of what OCD actually is (no thanks to popular media), and a lot of things I see talking about intrusive thoughts don't mention OCD (either bc they originated in OCD circles or bc intrusive thoughts aren't Exclusive to OCD or for some other reason), there should prob be more explanation put out on what OCD actually consists of.
Which is kinda hard in some ways, bc there are so many ways OCD can present in terms of what "themes" a person experiences, so someone talking about what their themes are might not ring a bell with someone who experiences different ones. But like, the core thing with OCD isn't the presence of certain themes, it's a specific pattern of spiraling thoughts and reactions.
Like. OCD is a mental condition/illness where people experience stressful, unwanted, repetitive thoughts. These are intrusive thoughts are what make up the "obsessions" part of the disorder. In response to these intrusive thoughts, a lot of people will perform certain actions or think certain things in an attempt to neutralize or disprove the threat they represent. These are the "compulsions" part of the condition.
For a more "traditional" example, someone experiencing intrusive thoughts that they might catch a communicable disease may obsessively wash their hands or google their symptoms to try to lessen the anxiety. While someone who is worried they might hurt someone (even though they very much do not want to hurt someone) may avoid being near sharp objects or may avoid the people they're afraid of hurting.
One of the issues with OCD is that performing the compulsions provides short term relief, but in the long term it only strengthens the stress caused by the intrusive thoughts, thus furthering the thought spiral and actively making it worse, to the point where, depending on your themes, you may be (almost) convinced that your intrusive thoughts represent the truth or the inevitable or something permanent.
Intrusive thought themes cam be literally anything, but some of the common ones are stuff like
Questioning your sexuality, gender, etc (what if I'm actually straight/gay/bi/trans/cis/etc?)
Being worried about losing control and hurting yourself or others physically, sexually, emotionally, basically any way (what if I want to kill someone? What if I'm a pedophile? What if I'm an abuser? What if I want to stab myself? Etc)
Fear of becoming or being sick
Worrying something bad will happen to you or people you care about
Worrying about your spiritual beliefs or lack thereof (what if I'm actually Christian? What if I'm actually atheist? What if i don't believe in the faith i ascribe to? Etc)
Worrying about relationship status (what if I don't actually love them? What if they're not "the one"? What if they're cheating? What if *I'm* cheating? Etc)
What if I'm a bad person?
Fear of losing things
Fear of things not feeling right (this is often be related to other themes via magical thinking. ex: if I don't have my things organized Just Right then something bad will happen)
Fear of unreality
Compulsions vary by theme a lot obviously, but some common ones include
Hand washing
Organizing things until they Feel Right
Checking and double checking and triple checking to make sure you did something correctly
Obsessively reviewing your memories to disprove a thoughtor make sure you don't believe something
Arguing against the thoughts in an attempt to disprove them
Testing your mental reactions to a thought or to certain kinds of content, to show yourself you don't actually believe or feel something
Obsessively googling symptoms, testimonies, things related to your thoughts
Obsessive prayer
Repeating phrases, mantras, affirmations, etc in an attempt to make thoughts go away
Avoiding things and situations that set off your intrusive thoughts
Repeatedly asking for reassurance from others ("I'm not being xyz, right?")
But yeah this obviously isn't exhaustive but, just, if this kind of thing sounds familiar, you should probably do some research on OCD, bc while intrusive thoughts can occur with other conditions, the intrusive thought-compulsion spiral is the core of OCD and isn't really a subaspect of depression/anxiety/ptsd/etc. and the treatment and management of OCD can look different from other stuff, so its a good thing to look into.
(Also it's important to keep in mind, esp if you're someone that doesn't have it, that someone's intrusive thoughts Are Not "secret desires" or "repressed urges" or anything the person even remotely wants to act on. Someone having harm-related intrusive thoughts is not at risk of actually acting on them, no matter how worried they are of doing so.)
Anyway this was a long post and I don't have a neat way to wrap it up and also I accidentally added a poll and now can't get rid of it so here's free poll. I'm running on nyquil and a small amount of straight gin (which works very well at numbing a sore throat) rn gnite

WIBTA if i asked my friend to stop talking about cigarettes and nicotine related things with me? (cw for lots of talk ab smoking and cancer)
i (18ftm) have a friend in my psychology class (18f) who smokes cigarettes frequently and has been talking about considering switching to vapes.
for some backstory, my father passed away around two years ago now from lung cancer and complications, brought on by smoking cigarettes. he was undergoing chemo and radiotherapy, also self-medicating with CBD tablets to help with the pain.
i’m only just registering this part of my life now and have not really gone to therapists or councillors as i didn’t need it until now, but i recently got an appointment for this along with a referral for potential OCD and health anxiety that may or may not have been caused because of my dad’s smoking and illness.
i go to a uk college in the countryside so there are naturally a lot of kids who smoke both weed and nicotine, and a lot who vape.the issue here is that ive found the smell of cigarettes sends me into an anxious state and makes me feel sick/nauseous. the smell of weed is fine usually for me.
i hate to say it but i do not like smokers. if you’ve been doing it for a while, there’s no point in asking ‘does it smell like i’ve gone for a smoke?’ the answer is always yes, it sticks even through deodorant and perfume and stains your teeth and nails, it smells to the people around you and don’t even get me started on second hand smoking.
the friend i’m talking about is in my psych class and smokes very frequently to the point i can smell it on her whenever we meet up. this wouldn’t be an issue in itself as i am trying my best to ignore it and learn to deal with the anxious shakes i get around her, but the issue is that she constantly brings cigarettes and smoking up.
i’ve asked her not to smoke around me if possible and if she needs one i will gladly leave or wait for her in another spot . however when she doesn’t have a smoke or can’t have one for whatever reason she’ll still talk about how she gets cigarettes, how her mum feels about them, how her brother smokes, how she wants one really bad. she’s now switched to talking about how she wants to switch to vapes, which again i still don’t appreciate because it’s still talking about nic to me.
she’s ignored this multiple times despite knowing about my father’s issues. or she’ll talk about it for a long time then go ‘oh sorry, about your dad, i should stop talking about this’. it’s not a big big thing as we only hang out from time to time (mostly on a walk to the bus stop every monday afternoon).
i feel like i’d then be being a dick for saying that i’d appreciate her stopping talking about it while i’ve already asked her to not smoke around me. wibta?
What are these acronyms?

hey I'm a pharmacist! Not refuting your point at all, it's a very good one, but I wanted to point out a little thing that I'm not entirely sure that was addressed. It's totally cool if you don't trust a random person on anon claiming to know things, but I think the greater risk with the Ashwaganda regarding serotonin syndrome is cumulative serotonin with other medications people are commonly on, like SNRIs/SSRIs. While I totally agree Ashwaganda as monotherapy won't result in serotonin syndrome, a lot of people are not aware of the complex interplay between over the counter supplements and other medications. And while I wouldn't expect solo Ashwaganda to cause SS, I would be concerned if someone thought they were taking something estrogen adjacent, are on bupropion/sertraline/trazodone and added another serotonin affecting compound without realizing it.
That being said, thank you for taking the time to cite sources and conbat misinformation! And I realize this is a deeper dive than most people would want to go in on a post, and the correction of misinfo is incredibly important -- but coupled with the lack of actual federal regulation of chemicals in supplements and variable concentrations of strength in supplements without any real way to verify it, there is definitely a small but very real risk of serotonin syndrome in this.
Thanks for reaching out! I definitely agree that interactions with SSRIs should be researched before any supplements are taken -- along with the Ashwagandha + SSRI for anxiety paper linked in the other post, there was another study done where patients with OCD were given it along with their SSRI.

It's reportedly beneficial as an adjunct to SSRIs, but we don't know the optimal dosage yet for getting the most out of them in combination.
It's worth noting that the doses have below 1000mg in these SSRI combination studies. With any medication / supplement, there's always going to be an upper limit of safety, and yes I do believe that if someone were to down a giant handful of those Estrolabs pills with an SSRI then it wouldn't have ended well, but taking a handful of most other medications with an SSRI would also do that.
I can just see a lot of people reacting strongly to the original post which was explicitly saying that Ashwagandha will kill people -- and they put it in sleep gummies and CBD and tons of things now -- and it would be shitty if people started scaremongering about every supplement they saw at CVS that has it on the label.

a couple ocd(?) things that i’m curious if anyone else experiences
- i’m Not Allowed to sing songs that aren’t Accurate. example (one of many) is cbd by brakence, with the lyric “no one cares for me except me.” every time i hear it i feel compelled to stop singing it because im afraid someone will think i mean that literally.
- only some of my “compulsions” correlate with “obsessions” and vice versa (in quotes bc im scared of being wrong) like i check the locks because of my home invasion obsession and i wash my hands etc. about contamination, but there’s no real reason i feel like i need to count my steps in groups of 6 or put my cursor in the middle of an imaginary square on any given webpage. it just feels wrong if i dont.

When I was 17/18 I begged my parents to let me buy the George Harrison CBD cigarettes dad grass put out because I was convinced it would cure my ocd symptoms and they let me and it worked a little bit but I think that was just because it forced me to sit down and take a breather

medical cannabis? illegal unless you have specific type of MS
and now they're "investigating" CBD oil that contains no THC and have pulled the products just as i was going to buy full spectrum to see if it would help with my ocd + chronic pain
it's only been legal to be sold for "cosmetic or aromatherapic" use so far
what is legal though, is getting me on meds that made me vomit continuously for 6 hours after taking the first dose, seasick in my own bed unable to eat for the whole day

Sleep deprivation.
I love sleeping. Always have. No worries, no responsibilities, nothing. It's true when they say ocd latches on things you love and care about the most.
It started innocently enough. One day i just couldn't fall asleep. Ant then the next day. And my mind already started to wander.
Is there something wrong with me?
Is it my brain?
What if i never sleep again?
I tried everything. CBD, HHC etc. Didn't work. I told myself it won't work. So i tried sleeping pills. They sure did work. But i didn't want to develop an addiction on top of all this. So i called my psychiatrist and boom. That's how i developed my biggest compulsion yet.
She prescribed me antipsychotics. I finally felt good. I could sleep. But i can't sleep without them, because i'm afraid i won't fall asleep.
"You won't fall asleep now that you didn't take the pill."
"Just think about how tired you'll be if you don't get enough sleep."
"If you don't fall asleep now, you'll only sleep for 7 hours."
"But if you take the pill that makes you an addict."
"But if you don't you won't sleep."
I tried. So many times. But every single time i don't take the pill, i get overwhelmed by anxiety. So i just take it.
But now i've dissapointed myself.
Yet again.

U like fall season, saw Hannibal, and likes bugs
I love fall- love everything about it. The colors the coziness, apple picking, halloween. Favorite season. I don't like Hannibal - It's about cannibalism right? I have an OCD theme about cannibalism so I have to avoid anything on/related to that topic I was deathly afraid of any bug. Including butterflies. But mostly spiders. I actually jumped out of a moving car because there was a spider. I was trapped in a bathroom for hours screaming and sobbing standing on the toilet because there was a spider on the door handle. In my head the bugs would just grow and grow until I was like I can't kill it with this shoe because it's bigger than the shoe, faster than I can move.
Something happened maybe 6 years ago - I started taking CBD for an unrelated ptsd trauma & depression. And my phobia completely went away without me realizing it. Like one day there was this huge hornet in the house. And I just climbed on a chair (also had a heights phobia) got the vacuum and captured it- then released it outside. Without an ounce of fear. and I was like- what just happened!! And now I actually think they are pretty neat. Beetles are awesome and so colorful, butterflies and moths are cool. I'm the designated person who takes care of bugs in the house now. Spiders don't even freak me out a little bit. I don't like being startled. But it's really incredible to not have that debilitating fear

I have no idea what to do on Tumblr, but it is a heck of a lot easier to just post a link that serves as an about me page for Discord. Y'know, I don't know if I can even edit it, but whatever. I'm lost here and I want to go home, lol.
My name is Jonathan and I am a member of everything male. So, as of writing this, I am 24 and I reside in the ever struggling community of Sorry... I mean Sierra Vista in the state of Arizona; that's in the US btw. No, seriously, it's a decent community.
More specific ideas about me are that I am very happily straight, possibly a struggling metrosexual, but most importantly to me, a practicing Christian. I just want to do the most I can with what God has given me. I don't however wish to be the Christian who shoves my faith in the face of everyone else. Only through the compassion of Christ.
I am single, I wish to save sexy time for heterosexual married life and I find penetrative sexy time to be odd. Does that make me asexual or heteromantic?
I am under the idea that hugging is the best way to communicate that you care about someone and spending time with someone shows how much you value them.
I have Attention Deficit Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and I'm freaking out in this Wendy's. I may or may not have clinical depression, it depends on what ADD and OCD tell me. My medications are great though. Sometimes I wonder about slightly being on the spectrum but it's just a personality enhancement. If ya don't like me, you're the one who has lost.
Asthma is a heck of a drug. Hyperhydrosis is the Waterpark of hades. Extra body fat means that Joe Biden can't kidnap me.
Politics are like gum, you only share when asked.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not a vibe.
One time I accidentally got high from drinking CBD oil. The experience was traumatic, the memories were those of a lifetime.

I wonder how my mother sucks and colleen sucked so bad at washing dishes. I've been doing my pan and spatula everytime I make eggs and my pan is spotless. My spatula has no 3 year old cheese dried in the corner...
Ocd has held me back for years on doing dishes but life was hard cause my moms dishes are disgusting.... I mean I sorta overwash but I dont worry about the water splashing up...
I've noticed my ocd has gotten a tiny bit better since stopping that medication i took for years that could cause it.
Something touched my foot in the shower... one of the sticky things that keep you from falling... and I mean I clean the shower floor at least once a week since the barricade so I brushed it off.... I mean I'm kinda doing the 3 day rule that Kristen said... just that germs only last for 3 days so to aviod doing the wash routine, just don't touch my foot where the thing touched me but normally I'd be filled with anxiety anyways... but I'm not.
My ocd is still bad that's why i can't touch Riley or convince myself she's clean. It's why I have the barricade. The fucked part is if Riley got rehomed. I could clean the whole house and i think I could recover from most of my ocd...
My brain actually re-grew tissue. It had global volume loss. And I stopped that medication which i had no idea could cause ocd... and I stopped that a year ago... and I've noticed my ocd has improved in a lot of ways...
How? Well I'm doing my dishes.. I was able to face the rat shit up in the attic and the fear of dust mites and all that... yea still if Riley ever leaves I have to deal with the rat shit clothes but idk what I want to do with that anyways. Just doing the attic was a huge step.. I'm not done with it but Riley haulted everything. It sucks bc it's the perfect outside tempature to really spend hours up there finishing up.
Also in order to use those old bins, I had to use chemicals, another fear i have... I appreciate my glasses bc they help with not getting chemicals in my eyes. But I mean I used lysol wipes and cleaned the bins and all that.
I use the storage drawer thing cecile and I had everyday that was covered in rat shit after cleaning it.
If I ever got out of this toxic environment I could really rise. My brain literally grew new tissue. And as I take lions mane with cbd and white mulberries it will continue to kill off bad brain cells and make better ones.
Anyways if anyone would give me the chance they don't even know how much I could change. I'm changing here despite the constant toxicity I live in.
I was thinking about Elise and how if we ever became friends how I would never want her to slum it and come here. It's a slum. I mean that applies to everyone i meet at this point. Any new potential partner. Any new friends. Old friends even. But yea my house is a slum and I'd be embarrassed.

I've been on some CBD/G products to reduce my anxiety and pains and man. Even with that stuff, my mind really did say "yeah its over for you". I feel like I'm basically waiting to die rn, which im aware is both true and also grossly overblows what's likely just a minor injury.
At the very least, this boud of ocd has been met with so much kindness and support of my loved ones. Which makes it far more tolerable. Still, I feel absolutely awful for even going through this in the first place. I need the 22nd to come by faster, so that I can get rid of all this and begin the healing journey once again.

So I consider myself to be a drug cocktail connoisseur despite the fact that this put me in the ER once
Anyway as someone with bad night terrors, insomnia, inability to stay asleep, restless leg syndrome, sleep based OCD, and fatigue, I've been trying to find the right cocktail of meds to put me to sleep and STAY asleep for a restful night. Rhis has proven difficult
I've gone through 3 prescriptions for sleep, 1 over the counter sleeping pill, magnesium glycinate, melatonin, CBD, alcohol. Sleep like a baby for three hours and then wake up again
However with the right combination I can either achieve Actual Sleep or see the hatman
#unfortunately i miss opioids they felt so fuzzy#painkillers feel fuzzy in general but they make me not so sleepy#also i love trazodone my baby my girl#my silly heart cannot handle you
