i'm just imagining— established payneland, and it's so good, but then the fear starts creeping in.

charles not believing, not daring to hope that edwin could possibly want him for nearly as long as he wants to be wanted. him trying to feel everything as much as possible each time they kiss, each time edwin calls him darling and gives him that quiet little dimpled smile, each time edwin holds his hand and looks at him like he's hung the stars, because he's so scared that this might be the last time he gets to have it. he's so scared that one day edwin will open his eyes and see the scared little boy that can't do anything right even when he's trying his very very best. he'll see that charles was never worth it at all, never worth the love and devotion and kindness that edwin seems to give away so freely and easily. and it's selfish, isn't it? it's so selfish of charles to be scared and it's selfish of him to dread it, because edwin deserves more and it's unfair of charles to keep that from him just because he is so irrevocably in love with someone leagues better than him.

but then edwin finds out and he tells charles with tears in those pretty, pretty eyes about all the ways charles has saved him, all the times charles might not have hung the stars but done something better. he holds charles and tells him the story of a lost and lonely young boy who reads too much and dies too young and spends seventy years facing a punishment he does not deserve. he tells charles about how the boy crawls out of the recurring nightmare, wild and feral, animal-like, and how he thinks he will never smile again. then he tells charles about how the boy sees someone in an attic— another boy, just as lost and lonely. this boy, shivering and dying and miraculous, makes him smile within minutes, makes him feel a comfort that he's never felt before. the other boy dies, but wonderously, he stays. he gives up heaven and he smiles— looks like you're stuck with me— and he makes sure that neither of them will be lost and lonely ever again. charles cries as the story finishes, as edwin tells him, "they will never be apart. for the solace they find in each other, for the way their breaths mingle and their souls sing when they touch, they will stay together. they will stay together and want for nothing, because what could you possibly want when you already have everything?"

edwin tells him how he believes they were both born in the wrong time, edwin too early and charles too late, so the universe helped them out in the beginning, pulled at the threads of fate just so they could meet. the rest, he says, is a choice— staying together, starting the detective agency, solving cases, playing games, laughing, talking, falling in love— it's all a choice. one that he's made readily over and over again for thirty years, edwin tells him. one that he will continue to make for the rest of eternity, edwin tells him.

and slowly, bit by bit, word by word, kiss by kiss, charles believes him.

it always makes me cry, the fact that Edwin read to Charles in his last hours just to comfort and soothe him and for Charles it was one of the first acts of kindness in a long time. so i think that moment always be in his memory, special moment when he understand that this boy might be the best thing happened in his more already afterlife. and i really like the idea that since then Charles love when Edwin reading to him. it started one day when they preparing for one of their cases and Edwin read to Charles paragraph with information that would help them from one of these many books about paranormal they have. and it remind Charles how calming and nice and soft Edwin's voice can be. so he ask Edwin to read someting else from this book, like they need more useful info and thats not Charles just want to hear Edwin's voice over and over. and after that time it becomes something permanent. sometimes Edwin reads something necessary for cases or something he just finds interesting. sometimes Charles casually asks "what's new?" when Edwin is completely immersed in a new tome. later, Edwin begins to choose fictional books and read his favorite paragraphs to Charles, interested in his opinion about them. and from brief moments it turns into pleasant hours spent reading and occasionally commenting on both of them, and they really enjoy it. and i love to think it became their special little comforting ritual after long day of investigations and danger. and after them both realized their feelings for each other those reading session start felt more intimate as they snuggling closer to each other, Charles resting his head on Edwin's shoulder and Edwin gently stroking Charles' hair and sometimes they pulling away from the book to give each other a sweet little kiss

I am rewatching Dead Boy Detectives for the 3rd time and I noticed that it's not only in hell that we see Edwing running faster than Charles or should I say that Charles lets Edwin go faster to watch his back

Of course, in hell Edwin is so scared he probably does it without thinking, but also because deep down he KNOWS that Charles is behind him slowing down the spider, just like in the first episode, when Charles wants to teach him defending himself, he says that he doesn't need to because he knows that if they are in danger, Charles will fight for both in order to protect him.

So, in the first minutes of the first episode we see the boys running away from the WW1 soldier and Charles is always the one behind, the one who looks back to see where the man is and if he can do something to slow him down and then, when they approach the mirror and the soldier has almost reached them, he pushes Edwin through it to make sure he is safe in another place while he tries and fight him.

As a multishipper with Payneland as my otp I would love sooo much to see a fic where Edwin develops a fling with the Cat King before being end game with Charles.

Nothing serious but just enough to allow Edwin to explore his sexuality, his needs and his need of being needed in that way. But still casual as in maybe a friend's with benefits way (don't want my poor meow meow getting hurt).

I can envision him saying "he makes me feel seen", in a way that Charles hasn't seen him yet (cause he needs some glasses). And maybe that's the push he needs to actually see him in that way, as a romantic prospect.

And maybe this, or the feeling that Edwin's affections might be slipping away, is the solid evidence that Edwin might be moving on would do it for him.

Cause just because Charles wants to take his sweet time figuring "the rest out" doesn't mean Edwin has to sit and wait forever. There are hot boys falling for him everywhere he goes. Charles better keep up!

Also, I think it would be super funny if when they finally get together, Edwin is the most experienced one of them. I believe Charles might have had some heated make out sessions when he was alive (and maybe even with Crystal?) but I bet he died a virgin just as much as Edwin.

And then, bam, tables are turned. Street smart guy for the first time is unsure of what he's doing. Edwin knows and will lead the way.

saw @tma-thoughts ‘s post talking about not enough butch charles rowland and wanting to see more butch4femme painland and naturally I spent the entire rest of my day brainstorming, researching, and then drawing this time period accurate (to the best of my abilities) butch!Edwin(a? Edie?) x femme!Charles (definitely Charlotte/Charlie)

I have whole spreads of photo references for both of them but in case anyone is interested, Charles is inspired by rudegirl/ska punk/skinhead/punk/goth feminine aesthetics from the 1980s UK (even more specifically by the band The Bodysnatchers) while Edwin is inspired mainly by sportswear for women in the 1910s as well as what photos I could find of teenage girls during that era! in terms of Edwin reading as butch, I wanted to combine the shortest hair I could get away with (for the era and while still reading as Edwin—too 20s reads as too fashion forward which is not the vibe), as well as balance the line between sportswear (which imo reads as butch) and Edwin’s usual fashions. I also kept her makeup-free, accessory-free, and overall more “practical” in her dress to try and read as more butch. something to note that you don’t see here— Edwin is 100% wearing bloomers/trousers either as part of or underneath this skirt. I couldn’t get it to read correctly in the design but I need you to know they’re there lmao

Okay I may or may not be going insane over doom patrol payland. Because if you really think about it Edwin likes Charles in Doom patrol and so happens to like him in the Netflix show which I’m using the Edwin side of my brain to put the parts together. If you also think about it in every universe Edwin’s gay af. Because he’s been confirmed gay in the Netflix show, it’s pretty obvious he likes men in doom patrol supposing the conversation with Larry, and this page says enough

It doesn’t say that Edwin likes Charles but still, it’s hinting he’s fruity. You don’t think that in both shows they make Edwin like Charles and make it one sided feelings. It’s just such a coincidence that in doom patrol he liked Charles in the show, and then so happened to like him in the Netflix show. Can you tell I’m obsessed with studying Edwin? Yeah if it wasn’t obvious I’m madly in love with Edwin, any shape or form except when he’s a 12 year old because that’s kinda weird. Also off subject his actors are fine af (except ty at some points but it’s okay). Edwin Payne is the best character and will forever be my favorite and all I talk about in my life. He’s my spirit animal, kinda going insane about him because he’s been my number one personality for this whole summer and I have spent 90% of my summer studying Dead boy detectives in general. I’m going insane this is a new kin and my whole personality is the show now, sorry friends you just have to watch doom patrol and then we’ll talk. Anyway who else hates kidneys?
