Missiles and Meal Service: The Hidden Toll of Flying in War-zones
Common occupational hazards in aviation; the not so new flight deck stressors would encompass turbulence, delayed pushbacks, and that one passanger having an issue with someone reclining their seat (this is so very common, believe me). Let’s not forget another one who thinks the seatbelt sign doesn’t apply to them while on active runway (because they are just itching for a snack they left inside their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. Opens bin, then bag falls off on them and everyone around. SMH)
Back to business. Pilots and cabin crew flying over the Middle East lately, especially in and out of Qatar, well, there’s a new, less subtle source of anxiety: missile attacks. Who doesn’t know the news by now?
Yes, flying into Doha these days might involve dodging airspace closures, U.S. airbase targets, and the occasional Iranian and Israeli news. Glamorous, right?
Very.
While passengers worry about delayed in-flight meals and Wi-Fi speeds being too slow or disconnecting , the crew up front and in the aisles are dealing with something much much heavier: the psychological toll of flying through a region where geopolitics are very unpredictable, stormy, and always just over the horizon.
Tumblr media
What Happened in Qatar Exactly, you ask?
In resent years, we’ve witnessed sensitive airspaces and in response, airlines have shut down their airspaces. Flights being rerouted faster than a teenager dodging chores have become commonplace, and airline dispatchers around the world had one collective panic attack.
Now just imagine this. Inflight, flight crew are prepping beverage carts while air defence systems light up the radar. Boom-Chaka-Boom! Just another day in the skies.
Cabin Pressure: Flying with a Side of Adrenaline
Yes, crew (deck crew and cabin crew) are trained to handle demarcates, but war is not an average Emmergency! It’s one thing to worry about fuel efficiency. It’s another to fly over a region where missiles are a real-time hazard.
There is a huge difference between trusting an aircraft, the team, and trusting geopolitics.
Constant anticipatory anxiety.
Hypervigilance, even on layovers.
The unsettling knowledge that their aircraft might share airspace with defense drones, military jets, and… well, more missiles.
Hospitality Meets Hostility
Tumblr media
Cabin crew, as you know, are the face of calm, smile and all. Even so, smiling while you serve fish, beef and a gluten free meal on a flight skimming a conflict zone? That’s dark art right there.
Results:
Crew becoming emotionally disconnected from their jobs.
Guilt when evacuating people while others are left behind. 2020 clears throat!
Luxury inflight service inside a pressure cooker floating mid air at 40,000 feet while those on ground are ducking. Definately dystopian!
More Fuel, More Detours, More Fatigue
Yep! Practical stress:
Flights being rerouted to avoid hot zones, adding hours to duty time.
Longer flight hours mean more fatigue, which affects both performance and emotional bandwidth.
There’s no glamour-AT ALL in a 15 hour turnaround because there is no clearance to land.
What Airlines Are Maybe doing
Critical Incident Stress Management teams.
Therapy appointments.
Pre and post dispatch briefings.
Even so, lots of crews feel out of the loop. Why you ask?Because, you get the news that you’re flying a risky zone when you’re already on it.
Hidden Costs: Forget Fuel and Insurance
Mental Health RiskWhat It Looks LikePTSD or traumaFlashbacks, fawning, sleep interruptions, avoidanceBurnoutEmotional numbness, lack of purposeAnxietyReccuring worry, overanalysing proceduresIsolationFeeling detached and lack of support on layovers or at home
These risks don’t show up on a flight log, but hey, they impact safety, morale, and retention. We talk about maintaining aircraft fatigue limits. What about crew fatigue limits?
Where Do We Go From Here?
Tumblr media
How about a Flight Plan for Mental Health in Conflict Zones:
Transparent Security Briefings.
Weight & balance before takeoff is paramount, so is mental health balance.
Flight Debriefs After High-Stress Flights.
Better Global Oversight, meaning ICAO, IATA and other relevant bodies must update protocols for mental wellness involving high-risk routes.
Bottom line, pilots and cabin crew are indeed professionals for they train, adapt, and make sure to get the job done. But, they are people too and not robots. People who fly into the world’s most dangerous zones with nothing more than a safety manual and nerves of steel.
We owe them patience, understanding, protection and genuine support as they navigate war zones with grit and grace.
Fly safe. Check on your crew friends, and just maybe skip the missile jokes during boarding.

Daphne: are you seeing that? Leif: I can hear it. It's good to know he only hates me. You and the girls never did anything wrong.Daphne: [smiling sadly] On such a terrible day… having this isn't bad, right? Your parents would have been happy. And that little girl… She had your eyes, so adorable. She looked just like her mom. Leif: She looked like Lindsay. Who, by the way, blames me because my son took Miracle away. [Leif pauses, feeling the almost suffocating pressure in his chest] Daph, I'm… so tired. Daphne: Time isn't magic, my love, it's not going to fix this. But it's never too late for an apology. Leif: How do you let this go? He hurt everyone, he hurt you. Damn, he took Lindsay's only daughter. Daphne: Did that girl standing there with him look kidnapped to you? [Daphne interprets her husband's silence as all the answer she needs] You need to apologize to him. Both of you need to mend things. And I need you to promise me you'll try. Leif: [with resignation] Fine. Daphne: I gave up my immortality for you; I'm sure you can set aside your pride for your son. Leif: [laughs softly] You'll never stop reminding me of that, huh? Daphne: We could have had eternity together, but no. Leif: The only thing I want to last forever are-… Daphne: Your paintings. I know. It's my fault for marrying an artist.

May I suggest adding a written transcript for the weekly videos plus a glitch/flashing lights warning? While the effects are cool, they can be harmful to photosensitive and epileptic viewers.
Thank you so much for this very important ask,
Of course in the next video I will add a warning and ill personally write out the transcript for anyone who needs it.
(sorry if these are messy, I'm writing them live by hand)
Prompt One Video:
Welcome to the first august challenge
I'm The One You Cannot Remember, and I speak for him.
He may be impatient, but he knows the week is short.
there will be one prompt.
The prompt is... Gaze.
But that is not all, there is a challenge.
Implication.
He wants you to indirectly imply the prompt.
After all...
ignorance is bliss.
Video two (my gift):
you are early... i like that.
i applaud your effort, its...
nostalgic.
thank you, remember who's watching.
Video three (perspective):
i wanted to personally welcome you to week two.
first. the challenge.
perspective.
sometimes it helps to, change your perspective.
it may help you see something that isn't there.
or it may protect you from those who take, hurt, or think themselves better.
greed.
wrath.
pride.
these are your prompts, take them as you will.
i have seen a lot of about you.
gale, damien, berri.
I cannot wait to see more. from you three, and others.
to walk a mile in your shoes... has been quite revealing
He understands the need for such things and will include them in the next videos. Sorry for the delay.

YO, your transcription of the stream excerpt is fantastic!
English is not my native language and some moments were difficult to hear correctly. Also, considering that Paper's voice sometimes interfered with understanding.
The acronym topic generally broke my brain without subtitles, but it was definitely fun lol.
The number one Paper fan, huh?
aww, thank you! im glad it could be of aid 😁 english isn't my first language either, it's french! although ive grown much more accustomed to english

TRANSCRIPT/MORE DETAILED DIALOGUE BELOW
After an hour (or has it been two?) of unpleasant scavenging, Madison meets back with Heath. Despite now stinking with sweat and trash, a calm, replacing her previous unease, has settled over her. The quiet and light breeze of the surrounding area is nice, but is a weird, sharp contrast to her arrival at this camp or even life before. The thought knocks her off track again, and she glances around cautiously because the undead could show up anytime and disrupt this peace. Like before. A painful, hollow nostalgia grips her heart, and Madison ceases in her footsteps for a moment. The sound of cars or people is absent, and trying to settle into that—a world where such absence is good because strangers are not good, yet simultaneously a worry of the undead—is like learning how to walk again, plagued with phantom pain.
The sand sinks underneath Madison’s feet as she approaches Heath, who is fishing. The first thing Madison notices in the surrounding area is a—
"There’s a dock?" Madison spouts out, swiping the sweat off her eyebrow. Her tone already carries the implications of what she’s thinking. The islands.
"Yeah…” Heath spares Madison a glance and begins retracting her fishing rod. “Don’t bet on taking a boat to Deadgrass Isles, though.” The statement is casual and lazy, as if it’s well-known. “Those military fucks destroyed them all."
One of Madison’s brow quirks. "You gonna elaborate on that?"
Heath’s hand pauses on the fishing rod, clearly thinking on it. "Nope,” she decides on, and silence falls in line with the quiet swishing of the ocean.
Madison decides not to push further, though she keeps the information in the back of her head. Military types destroyed all the boats. Is Deadgrass Isles the only island still populated? Why?
“Alright,” Heath sucks in breath. “Let’s go home.”

A tthought for the slob city setting. Water is out, and every variety of soda and sweet drinks are in. Yet, for many of these drinks, they are best had when they're cold. But if there's no clean water, how do they get ice? Or is it like the ice cubes made from liquid sugar or different drinks?
I will like to preface this by saying I actually don't drink soft drinks. I pretty much just drink water, tea (unsweetened) and sometimes milk. So I do not really consider things like this at all.
By liquid sugar, I assume you mean syrup (water/sugar mix). The problem with this and soft drink 'ice' is that the sugar makes it hard to freeze (it's a bit like how alcohol won't freeze easily). With a high enough water content, it could work. Otherwise I think it ends up like a slurry (according to a brief internet search).
The bigger point to consider though is how they would be consuming their drinks. Because to use ice, you need to pour it into a glass. And honestly, since 1) they're going to drink the whole bottle/can and 2) it's more effort to pour into a glass, I don't think they would even really use ice if they had it. 99% of the time I picture my slob characters drinking straight from the bottle.
Also if they just store it in the fridge or freezer (and let it melt a bit) then it should be cold enough if they don't leave it out.
This is such a minor issue but I am pleased you think enough about this world for minutiae like this to cross your mind. I'm sorry I don't have a great answer for you, so I'll leave you with this science fact:
Interestingly enough, adding sugar will decrease the temperature of water (for 100 mL of water, my calculations say it goes down by 0.2 degrees Celsius with each teaspoon you add (~4 g)), but you would need to add a lot of sugar to get a noticeable decrease (50 teaspoons for 10 degrees C) and at that point it might be saturated, especially since the drink probs already has sugar in it, so you'd just get syrupy stuff and the sugar will eventually crystalise out).
And on the subject of adding sugar to soft drinks, I am reminded of one of my favourite videos that has been lost to the sands of time: Chikaranese's "My Tribute to Junkfood". At one point, Chikara lists his junk food combos (frosting and caramel on doughnuts, marshmallows on pizza, etc) and one goes "soda is sweet, but it can always be made sweeter by adding syrup".
