THE RULES OF THE BLAME GAME

In the blame game, nothing gets solved because the rules are too preoccupied with scoring points. It is designed to remove personal responsibility and make the other believe it’s all their fault and the only one who needs to change behaviour.

A Slave-Girl will absorb this as her personal failing. A Queen sees the game and works towards resolution or removes herself from the toxic drama.

Here are some emotionally manipulative sayings used in the blame game:

1. “OH YOU ARE JUST BEING OVERLY EMOTIONAL.” This dismisses feelings. Toxic people will be using this to blame you and your “issues” instead of accepting you are upset.

2. “YOUR FEELINGS ARE WRONG” This is about control. Healthy love is never mad at you for feeling a certain way nor does it ever want to take your feelings away from you.

3. “I NEVER SAID THAT” This spin webs and is designed to get you into knots. They will say one thing during an argument and then claim they never said that / you heard it wrong /you obviously weren’t listening. A Queen remembers the truth.

4. “YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND ME” This is a technique to play the victim. It is designed to play the sympathy card, make you feel sorry for them. By making you feel unreasonable you take the responsibility for the situation.

5. “HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO ME?” This is designed to remove the spotlight away from them and onto you and your insecurities.

6. “YOU ARE THE MOST INSECURE PERSON I HAVE EVER MET” This is designed to compare you negatively to others. If this happens it’s time to remove yourself. Healthy love lifts you up and supports you. It loves you with your anxieties and insecurities included.

7. “I NEVER LIED. I TOLD YOU WHEN YOU ASKED” This is withholding the truth. It is designed to get away with a lie and their inauthentic behaviour.

8. “I’M GOING TO SLEEP” This technique is to control the situation. If they can sleep while you are crying and distressed they don’t care about you.

I am sure we have all used these at some point. Toxic behaviour will use these most of the time. Loving, empowered people do not care how long it takes. They want both of you to feel reassured and the situation resolved.

Art prompt number 3: White Shame... This image relates to my experience of shame in general. To me, the feeling of shame is like being caught in the rain and being totally drenched. It washes over you and if you are drenched, it takes a long time to dry, or, in other words, recover from the awful feeling, which makes you want to hide in a hole. If shame makes you beat yourself up and withdraw, it is not a healthy version of the feeling. The question I have been asking myself is, 'How does this feeling benefit me?` If I realize the feeling is an old coping mechanism, no longer helpful to me or the people around me, then I try and shift that emotion through action. Often, this action is making art but all movement can shift feelings in the body to transform into something different (Dr. Daniel Siegel's research proves this❤️😉 look him up). I realized recently my 'White' shame was not helpful to anyone. In a sense, it is a form of transgenerational trauma; an unhealthy feeling passed down by my ancestors. I don't want to make the same mistakes they made.
