Maturing is realizing that the Madrigal family are all good people, they just lost sight of what was important over time because they were all so focused on their own struggles and desperately keeping their magic afloat that they ended up hurting each other and either not being there for one another, or not recognizing the other’s hardships. They’re a family who loves one another, but they’re broken due to the generational trauma. Certain characters hid their true feelings, certain characters weren’t there for others, certain characters kept their mouth shut and didn’t intervene, certain characters didn’t see or understand others. They were told how important this miracle is practically all their lives and how they can’t take it for granted that they eventually forgot about what was most important to them in the beginning, their love for each other. The Madrigals being a broken and flawed family but a family filled with good people who still care about one another deep down are statements that should coexist. 🕯❤️

For the movie asks: 3, 11, 17
Thank you, @smalltownfae!
3. A movie you think is overrated?
Oh, the words I had about Lost in Translation right after watching it? Maybe it was because I was buzzed on an edible, but I absolutely thought that felt really overrated in the watching. Not bad, Johansson and Murray give some top-shelf performances, that choice of ambiguous dialogue at the very end is a great one, and I dig the point of this being a temporal crossroads between one's beginning and one's end, and the alienation behind being alone in a foreign country... but, by god, Japan's way too caricatured in this, especially the "lip my stockings" scene and the bit with the dart guns, and you can tell Sofia Coppola's still a bit inexperienced in not trusting the audience, given the on-the-nose A Soul's Search tape.
It's probably objectively artsy and "good," but compared to Paterson, First Cow, and even The Station Agent, it doesn't do that much for me.
11. A movie you wish you could un-watch?
Before yesterday, Encanto. The songs are catchy, I love the colors and visuals of this movie, Luisa is an all-timer design alone, so that's why I'd purge it and avoid a movie that needed either 10-15 more minutes to pace out the climax better, to prune out a few family members to give more narrative breath to the remaining ones, or turned into a Disney original TV show, an episode focused on a family member.
However, Ghostbusters: Afterlife made a solid case as a movie that I was better off not watching. Maybe I was just in a very tired mood by then, but it just rung as the most cynical "loving" nostalgia-bait cash grab, and that's even before you get into the ethical ramifications of CGI Harold Ramis of it, with a self-defensiveness streak to its jokes and a tepid climax that doesn't rise above the more dynamic middle part of ghostbusting.
17. A movie you never get tired of talking about?
Pig, Pig, Pig, Pig, Pig. Holy shit, Pig is really great.
I could go a lot into Nicholas Cage's acting (just a papered-over, stoic split scar of a man), Alex Wolff's acting (he's great all across, but his last scene is perfect, beautiful and gutting), the forest visuals, the parts' food titles, the way the foodie world there pops alive, the dialogue about the persimmon tree, the palpable grief intertwined with wounded nihilism suffusing the narrative, the restaurant scene, and its entire second half, and what it says about masculinity, prestige, performance, and art. All in a tight about 90 minutes? Hard to believe it's Sarnoski's directorial debut, but easy to believe Cage saying it's his best performance, hands down. There's such lovingly subtle and trusting collection of details for the audience to cotton on, I don't think I can ever shut up about it, given so few people have watched it, compared to Everything Everywhere All at Once.
I hope more people watch it, it's so textured and tender, just an amazing movie.

Disney Animated Movies 60 - Encanto
Disney Animated Movies 60 – Encanto
I get the general impression that Raya and the Last Dragon was originally supposed to be Disney Animation Studio’s 60th movie. It’s a big story (too big for the movie’s own good), attempting to tell an epic fantasy story involving dragons, evil spirits and rival tribes coming together. It would have made sense, seeing how both the 25th and 50th movies from the studios were major projects. But…

Encanto https://bit.ly/3wl66S3 If you liked Moana then you are the target for Encanto, a song-filled animated story of young female derring-do, set against the background of an ancient civilisation and with a sprinkling of magic to help things along. Polynesia did the decorative thing for Moana, it’s Mesoamerica in Encanto, but if actual knowledge brings you in … Read more

So I listened to the podcast with the Jared/Charise/Byron interview shared by @madrigaljail and I noted some things said in there! I'll make some comments between brackets sometimes.
You can listen it here!
Powers were often swapped around (Like Dolores having Julieta's gift!!!)
The project started 2 years onto Zootopia
Encanto is a family story different from other family stories
Family is complicated
They didn't know the names at first, they only knew that there will be a bunch of kids and one is ordinary
The backstory of Abuela is the core of the story
The project started fall 2016
They spent months researching
Disney prioritized researches (obviously)
It's not a religious miracle, only a miracle for the family
It's a story of families around the world
Things aren't always fully explained in magical realism, it's open to interpretation and Disney typically never have done that (They talked some times about Magical realism I don't know if they really understood it. I didn't understand Magical realism either when seeing things about it)
The magic in the movie is unique (Really? Maybe)
The antagonist had to be from inside the family so conflict are more nuanced because they all love each other, they're missing each other (Of course! PEPA LOVES BRUNO!)
Isabela is antagonistic toward Mirabel
Not having a villain permitted them to concentrate on the characters
At some point they thought about making Julieta the antagonist (That would have been wild wow!)
They ended up spending a lot of times with the characters and it helped for making the movie (I can understand that.)
It was overwhelming to write the dinner scene because of the number of characters
The song The family Madrigal is super important
Bruno's role on the concept of the family's symbolic role is "The outcasted, the troubled family member"
When thinking about his power it appeared seeing the future and be blamed for that would be horrible for Bruno
First he was 1 or 2 years older but finally it appeared to be better if he was already gone when Mirabel is "experiencing a sort of kick in"(?) (What the heck are you saying Jared?)
They wanted to have Mirabel have the stake "if something doesn't go right with you in this family you can have to leave it" (AAAAAAAAA)
Because it would be a fate worst than death, her biggest fear (Oh my!!!)
No way Abuela didn't come to Bruno to ask him for any danger "I have to protect this family"
The most important thing about Bruno is he loves his family and leaving was the better act to prove it
WDTAB came late in the project
The animals were talking at some point and in WDTAB the Toucan was saying about Mariano "he's hot" (...Bruno is ho*sbaff*)
They hope that WDTAB's demo will one day be released (me too lol, could be funny)
In a version Mirabel was directly going to Bruno's tower
Mirabel is doing all of that to prove her worth to Abuela more than to save her family
Abuela is a complex character because she's the Abuela, she's the matriarch
She's not a true antagonist
She was one of the earliest characters
She was sometimes too antagonistic, and some other times not antagonistic enough
Dos Oruguitas was meant to make audience's heart understand Abuela better and feel her
The scene in the hideout was pretty difficult because you have to shift from a goofy scene to a sad discovery. At some point it was too sad (for example the scene were Bruno is talking to one of his rats I guess)
Waiting on a miracle is that big angsty teensy song where Mirabel is wondering if she belongs in the family
Abuela was 25 when she lost her husband
In the prologue Abuela is telling the story to Mirabel and gives out all of the hard parts, then it was interesting for the story to be retold through a different lens
Again, thank you @madrigaljail for the link!

As much as we all want more Encanto content and thought that something really big was going to be announced at the the panel, I have to say that people need to keep in mind that Encanto came out not even that long ago, so expecting a second movie announcement or even a show announcement is way too early and unrealistic. These things take time, and not only that, but it’s very RARE for even Disney to be making more content (not counting merch) of their movies and all when the original source material came out not that long ago. I mean look at Moana and Zootopia, two other Jared Bush and Bryon Howard projects that came out in 2015-2016, and only NOW are announcing that there’s more content coming. I say this because I kinda already see people harassing Jared and the crew, and being aggressive, and not only is that….disrespectful, but people also need to keep in mind that the crew are humans beings and have their own lives, their own projects going on, so we can’t expect them to just keep feeding us when they have other things to do lol. Of course, as an Encanto fan people have a right to be disappointed, I am too, but to the people who are genuinely angry and pissed, (the people who are harassing mainly on twitter I mean) y’all gatta chill. We all know that Jared and the crew are very passionate about this project, and have stated time and time again that they would love to make more content, but we all need to look at this on a realistic standpoint. We may get it soon, we may not, that’s just how it is. But in the meantime, we should be thankful that we have Jared doing Q and A’s, as well as voice actresses like Adassa having a ball. As I’ve said before, I do believe we’ll get more Encanto in the future, but we just need to wait and be patient, that’s how it works in the animation community lol. With that said, I’m still more than happy to keep talking about Encanto, because I love the project dearly and I do want to see more, but to everyone who is upset, I’m sure the future holds great things, we just need to wait. 💕
