Happy Tuesday, Black Sails Nation!
As was requested by @billie-bones, I’ve listened back through 18 hours of interviews and compiled a list of every fic mentioned on the podcast.
This list is categorized by episode and includes ratings and summaries, as well as direct links to the fics, themselves. I’ll tag as many authors as I can, but I may not know the tumblr accounts for everyone. If you see someone who’s fics are referenced and you don’t see them tagged and happen to know their handle on here, you may want to send this on to them, that way they know which episode they’re mentioned in and can listen to hear the fic discussed if they so choose.
Some fics got multiple mentions across several episodes and so, to streamline, I’ve listed them only under the first episode in which they are mentioned, so there are no duplicate listings.
Edit: This will be a living document, updated with each new episode with any new fic recommendations. If you’re an upcoming guest and want to compile your top 5 and prefer to mention fics that haven’t been mentioned before, this list will be a valuable resource to cross-reference.
I want to thank my dear @tiofrean, partner in crime and all-around badass extraordinaire, for taking my bare bones list of titles, authors, and links, and filling them out with summaries and all the details you may want to know before committing to a fic. She also broke down every series referenced into its individual parts, since ratings and details will change throughout a particular series. She did this without me requesting it because she’s simply that awesome. Not only has she donated cover art commissions for several episodes, including the upcoming-coming Episode 13, but she helped with this project, which took several days, just for that part, out of the goodness of her heart. You sincerely fucking rock!
And without further ado, here is the Reading Between the Lines Podcast: Fic rec Masterlist!
@lupismaris @jaynovz @etoilesombre @tiofrean @b1uetrees @aisalynn @vowel-in-thug @jadedbirch @justadearie @lurkerdelima @r0b0tb0y @primal--scream @stele3 @twofrontteethstillcrooked @citrinekay @tahiri-veila @bisexualpirateheart @reluming @flintfag @mycapeisplaid @redwhale
Once again, if you don’t see your friend’s account tagged and they are on this list, please tag them or send this to them.
Sincerest thanks to all of our listeners! When you listen to the podcast, you’re supporting so so many people in this fandom!
Preview of Tora’s next episode art featuring Flint and Vane:

black sails. obv
My rating - uhh 7.5/10 or 8/10
My favourite character - IDFK flint ig because hes terrible and also awesome
My least favourite character - i like jack less every time i rewatch. eleanor is hateable but at least we're all on the same page abt her. jack has too many fans
The character I think I'd be friends with - tbh if i was in the new world in 1715 i would not be in the bahamas and i would not associate w anyone violent. but maybe i'd hang out w idelle and the girls.
The character I think I won't hit off with - literally the rest of em. eleanor. jack. in this mini self insert au where i'm a townie i'd probably hear horror stories abt silver and flint and make plans to run away to europe
My favourite episode/scene - i like when dastaan e om shanti om started playing that one time. ok no i dont have a fav scene but do u remember when max said our paths are going to diverge let it be now so we may not live in fear of it? also eleanor and vane before his execution that was so fucked up. ummm also when flint blew charles town up.. her word will be the last word for this place. slay
Whose clothing style I like best - i like flints gay earring
Times I watched it (and if I would again) - how many times has it been ?? it must be four times. thats crazy. and we made plans to rewatch this yr too. excited for that :)

Okay so I am currently watching through Black Sails for the first time and
Tumblr media
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE THEIR PORTRAYAL OF EDWARD “BLACKBEARD” TEACH
Gonna explain why under the cut. And also ask some questions that people who know a lot about pirates and/or are familiar with other great pirate shows/movies can hopefully answer for me!
Before I go any further, I want to preface everything by saying that I just finished season 4, episode 5 today. It’s my first time watching the show (so please don’t spoil anything beyond that episode for me), and so far I can happily say it is one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen. I’m SO impressed with the layers and depth of the story, how literally EVERY action has consequences (even the ones you don’t expect), etc. This show has all the political intrigue and power dynamics of Game of Thrones, without the noticeable decline that show unfortunately had. Season 4 has been AMAZING so far and I don’t expect the next half of the season to disappoint me. I’m genuinely starting to get a little sad that I’m so close to the end, because... NOW WHAT???
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE SHOW UP TO SEASON 4 EPISODE 5
My only real experience with pirate fiction or history at all before this show was really Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan. Even Treasure Island I’m largely unfamiliar with - I remember watching the Muppet version as a kid, I loved Treasure Planet but admittedly haven’t seen it in decades, and I barely remember either version, but yeah. I was recently in a pirate mood after that new Peter Pan movie came out on Disney+, Googled recommendations for a good pirate show, and Black Sails was the top of that list. And BOY am I glad I gave it a shot!!!
In particular, I found myself REALLY drawn to the character of Blackbeard. He showed up pretty late in the story so obviously I have a lot of other favorites as well, but he won me over VERY quickly. I’m at a point in my watch through where Teach is now dead, and unless he keeps coming back in Miranda-style visions (doubtful), I thiiiiink I’ve seen his entire story and am at a place where I can comfortably talk about his character arc?
Honestly, my only complaint is that I wish we saw more of him. He only ultimately shows up for like maybe 10 episodes, but MAN what a presence he brought with him!! As soon as he first showed up in that cabin being confronted by his ex-wife’s angry family, I was excited. He was played by the late RAY STEVENSON!!! I’ve only seen that particular actor in one other role, but he was my favorite Dexter villain BY FAR, so I knew he’d kill the role. I’m also super excited to see him in the upcoming Ahsoka show, but that’s neither here nor there lol. I feel like Teach’s overall lack of screentime hurts his chances of landing himself in my “favorite characters of all time” list, but I need time to digest the show for a bit before I decide on things like that. Because in the limited time we DO get with him, he hits all the right buttons for me!
I know Blackbeard is a super-famous real life pirate, and that he shows up a lot in popular fiction, but the only real knowledge I have of the man is what we saw in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. His portrayal in that movie was.... fine? I didn’t dislike him, but he definitely didn’t impress me either. He was a serviceable villain in a franchise that has had way better and more effective villains.
I work with kids, I serve as a mentor figure to them, and honestly my mission is to be the adult I wished I had in my life when I was a kid. Mentor/mentee, parent/child, “found family” relationships are something I LOVE to explore in fiction. Since I also tend to love villains, a lot of my FAVORITE fictional characters of all time are villains that explore a more toxic, dark side of those mentor relationships.
What I love about this portrayal of Blackbeard, primarily, is his relationship with Charles Vane. Despite how dangerous and arguably toxic both men are, their relationship was surprisingly sweet.
Blackbeard is a SCARY dude, and he very quickly establishes himself and makes it clear that he hates how soft and docile pirate society has become in his absence, and immediately goes about building a crew of hardened badasses that violently prove their worth to him. Yet, everything about his relationship with Vane is empathetic, understanding, and gentle.
Now, obviously, Vane is one of the most hardened and badass characters in the show. It’s easy to see why someone like Blackbeard would take a liking to someone like Vane. He grows to see Vane as a son, and despite the betrayals Vane puts him through, Teach never holds it against him, never lifts a finger to harm him, and even passionately seeks to avenge his death after the fact. His absence for literally half of the show’s run is because Vane betrayed him and exiled him, and in his words, he left because he would’ve had to kill Vane if he stayed.
He reveals, privately, to his lover that he is slowly dying from shrapnel in his chest, and wants to cement a legacy for himself through Vane - a fact that he never actually TELLS Vane or anyone else because he doesn’t want to manipulate or guilt him. Everything about Teach’s motivations revolved around Vane. But even beyond that, he grows something of a mentor-y dynamic with Jack Rackham after Vane’s death, and it’s implied that he took Israel Hands under his wing before Vane. He is entirely driven by his need for a son, even if that son is not biological -- after Vane’s betrayal, he laments that only God makes sons. As someone who also really wants to be a parent, and has a lot of mentor relationships instead, I really relate to that sentiment and feel the heartbreak behind it.
I genuinely love his style. A brilliant tactician, yet so ruthless and violent in a fight. I loved that he would be sword fighting people, only to randomly pull out a gun and shoot his opponents in the face. I loved his death scene and his utter defiance right until the very end. He wasn’t looking to make a statement, or inspire a riot, he just wanted to fuck with his murderer and ruin his moment.
So, I have a question for the pirate enthusiasts out there. How accurate is this version of Teach? Did he have this tendency to take people under his wing and mentor them despite his ferocity? Are there other fictional portrayals of him out there that have that quality to him? Even in Pirates of the Caribbean, he was pretty notable for the relationship he had with Angelica, who may or may not have been his daughter, but how genuine and caring that relationship was is left pretty ambiguous from both sides.
Either way, Black Sails is really sparking my interest in pirates in general! I recently purchased Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on Steam, and plan to play that very soon. I went and downloaded the shows Crossbones and Our Flag Means Death, but haven’t started watching them yet. I downloaded the anime One Piece, but am unsure when/if I want to watch it because holy crap it’s a huge commitment haha. It also occurs to me that I should probably read/watch Treasure Island, but I am fully aware that the pirate characters are two-dimensional villains without any of the complexity or nuance of Black Sails, so that’s disappointing. I know almost nothing about any of those above shows/anime/movies/games though so I’m in for a ride!!
But, my pirate enthusiast friends, another question: Any other great pirate media out there I should go consume?? I already know I’m going to miss this show when it’s over so I’m already starting to look for the next thing to watch to keep myself busy!

Plsssss do Daisy for your ask game! Based on your writing you definitely have some galaxy brain opinions on her aksjsndb
First impression- "ugh cop lady she's mean to jon :/ oh no she's gonna kill Jon!" My opinions on Daisy are the same as the common experience with Charles Vane of Black Sails, where on first watch everyone's like "ew, this guy" but by the end of the series and on every subsequent rewatch at least half of people have switched to "it's my guy!!! i love him!!!"
Impression now- It's my girl!!! I love her!!!
Favorite moment- the first time she comes into Jon's office to hang out post-Buried. Idr the episode, but she asks if she can like, stand in the corner while he records a statement. Close second is when she does the same thing to Martin, with the explicit purpose of having company, and even though he's deep in the Lonely he says sure
Idea for a story- hmm i think my best really Daisy-centric plot bunny rn is the mad max: fury road au. I think i've mentioned it once or twice, it's got Jonah/Elias as Joe, Basira, Jon, Sasha, and Tim as the Wives, Martin, Melanie, and maybe Georgie as War Boys, and Daisy as Furiosa. With evil library as the central motif/villain's goal instead
Unpopular opinion- the people who hate hate hate Daisy bc she's a cop like. Don't get it. like not liking the character for that reason's totally reasonable, but i've seen some ppl react to any mention of her (and to a lesser extent basira) like you've tried to set them on fire, and will write her/them out of aus, or even express the opinion that you can't put them in aus bc they have to be cops and cops bad, but making them Not Cops is missing the point. And while I agree that making the Not Cops is often missing the point, so is abhorring their characters like this (keep saying them but it's mostly daisy basira gets a pass for being a lil bit beholding i think, so you can take her that direction and ignore the cop stuff). like them being cops Is The Point, thematically. and while it's totally fair to not like them or stories about them because of that, that doesn't mean any fanwork about Daisy is automatically police apologia, even if she's written sympathetically. This tends to crop up a lot in the anti-redemption arc for anyone crowd that likes to declare characters too evil to change, which is missing the point in a different way, but it's not exclusively them. Like abolish the police! But after that we do have to continue living in a world with my neighbor Mike The Cop, we can't just exile him from society. even aside from the police stuff, realizing that you've been convinced of your rightness for a long time, but have actually drifted far away from your original goals and morals without realizing, and trying to change for the better, is a generally rad theme to get into! and also sometimes u just wanna talk about a cool werewolf lady and her friends. that's fine too.
Favorite relationship- in general, the obvious choice is her and Jon, but her and martin is a close second (some of my most popular posts are martin and daisy ones lol). if we're talking romance, Daisira is really the only game in town as far as i'm concerned. well... you could maybe do a fun au where basira's the buried one and the basira/melanie interseason thing i like to posit is instead melanie/daisy, with them feeding into the worst of each other and... well, there's a bonus story idea!
Favorite headcanon- femme daisy rights!!!!! she deliberately chose "daisy" as her nickname, to the point of getting mad when people call her literally anything else including her job title. there's nothing wrong with alice, and if she wanted to go more butch ally and al are right there. i love the idea of a daisy who often has blood under her nails, but also always has nail polish on, even if it's chipped. who wears the skirt version of her police dress uniform even though most policewomen opt for the slacks. actually 3rd fic idea: femme daisy who's had longish hair for a long time, and is attached to it, but can't stand it after the Buried. but really misses how it makes her feel girly and cute even when she's otherwise just wearing, like, pjs. and the gang cheering her up by watching like Roman Holiday and stuff, with very girly Audrey Hepburn's pixie cut, making her feel better about The Gender

You just finished season 1!!! What do you think of it so far?! ahskshs I can’t wait until you watch season 2, it’s one of my favorite seasons. (also who are your favorite characters so far? 👀👀)
I have finished season one! I am both very confused and way too invested in this show. Everyone’s pasts are being revealed piece by piece, and it’s so confusing but intriguing that I can’t look away. Do I know what their goals are? No. Do I want them to get them? Yes. Everyone’s so intense in this story and I’m pretty sure that counts for 80% of my interest right now. Like goddamn, I don’t know what you want and neither do you but that’s not stopping you from barrelling ahead and I respect that.
Max is my darling, my favourite, my beloved, and I want only the best things for her. Silver has grown on me an alarming amount, considering I spent the entire first few episodes side-eyeing him. His bluntness is definitely an endearing factor for me; every time he’s like “don’t look at me, I just want to stay alive here” I start laughing because it is waaaay too relatable. He’s literally me in a DnD campaign. The chaos is unparalleled, the style is immaculate, the long-term consequences are ignored. My man keeps digging himself into deeper and deeper holes and it’s kind of hilarious to watch.
Flint is… my man’s a mess, tbh. I’m somehow both impressed and appalled by him, and I’m also heavily invested in him getting everything he wants. I was actually trying to explain this to a friend, and the best way I could find—and this is going to sound really odd but bear with me— was to compare him to those clips from video games where a car rockets off the tracks, flies through the air, crashes through ten different things, flips, and lands on its wheels and keeps driving as if nothing has happened. Like, that’s the vibe! That’s Flint! He somehow keeps pulling things off, and I have no clue how he does it but it’s very impressive. Like, this is simultaneously the luckiest and unluckiest man I’ve seen in my life. He’s thinking ten steps ahead while also flying by the seat of his pants. If nothing else, his sheer audacity commands respect. Crew mutinying? Lie. Friend suspicious? Lie. Get called out for lying? You guessed it—lie some more! I take back what I said about Silver digging himself into holes—Flint is definitely the champion of hole-digging. But he also seems to be the champion of unlikely solutions, so maybe it’ll even out. Either way, he’s definitely a touch unhinged and I love it. Go feral, king.
I haven’t really gotten attached to Jack Rackham and Anne Bonny yet. I mostly want to fix his hair, to be honest. And Anne getting to stab the rest of their crew for abusing Max was very therapeutic. I swing wildly between rooting for Charles Vane and wanting him to keel over and die, so I’ll let you know when I’ve reached a conclusion. I don’t really have an opinion on Eleanor Guthrie, because I respect her ambition, but she also hurt Max early on, which soured my opinion of her. On the other hand, not doing that would have stood in the way of Flint finding the location for the Urca, which I also couldn’t abide, so… Jury’s out on her and Vane, but I am certain that those two deserve each other. Not sure whether I mean that in a good or a bad way, yet. We’ll see how we go.
My first favourite character was actually Gates. His competency and bromance with Flint gave me life, and then… well… we saw how that ended. I almost cried. Also, Billy. Billy was a favourite. Why do they keep killing my faves? I’d like to register a complaint.

Watching Black Sails 3x4
Starting a new episode takes the strength of at least ten men. Maybe I should spoil myself some more to make some of that anxiety in regards to how and when the bad things that I know will happen do happen go away.
Lol @ the crab being swished away by the waves.
Plus: Water. Minus: Cannibals?
Appearantly I can recognize Flint by his legs now, or rather by the way he walks. Or maybe it's the ass in those pants.
Flint loves it when Silver is being smart. And I love that they're bffs again.
Flint has no faith in his new partners, hm?
"If we speak with one voice, we seem to be able to compel them to any end." Uuuugh, those two.
"I wouldn't trade you for any ten of them." Cue 'the worst person you know has just made a great point' meme.
"Who is he?" and Jack shrugging, hahaha. Known each other for years, my ass. Like Jack has any friends out there that even compare to those in here with him.
Oh wow, did not expect that. Jack Rackham, you will be a fearsome pirate yet.
Charles is so heartbroken that his plan to defend Nassau failed. ;_; And Anne seems to have some sympathy with him.
Flint taking care of Silver is my new favorite thing.
OUCH.
"Sold more than we freed." So this confirms that Flint's crew used to trade slaves (apart from the ones Eleanor bought in S1).
A big camp indeed. That's almost a city!
This is really from the frying pan into the fire into... idk, a volcano? What did the walrus crew do to deserve so much bad luck? (Don't answer that one.)
Isn't that last crewmember of the slave ship a little too convenient?
Put holes in the fort, repair the fort, blow up the fort... what's next, build a new fort?
"Jack, you know there's no way I'd ever let that happen." What is with the feelings amongst the ranger crew this season! You weren't like this in season 1! (But then Vane didn't kill them even though they conspired to kill the rest of his crew, soo...)
"I was about to say 'See you soon, but that would probably be a lie, wouldn't it?" Aaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Damn, that was a big boom. Looks like there was enough explosive material after all.
The fact that nobody is even considering Flint in this whole endeavor is kind of offensive to me.
Hornigold: My fooooort.
Things are not going well for Flint's crew, I see. But nice to see Silver scheming again.
Vane used to be so respected aka feared in Nassau and now he's a wanted man, that's gotta sting. There's no saying who will betray him and when. - Hah, but that man thought better off it with just a look from him!
Ah, so do bring a gun to a sword fight, got it.
Vane really has to eat shit at least once in every battle, doesn't he? But it's nice to see that he's just a man despite his reputation.
Oooh, Teach to the rescue.
Damn, that look Charles had for the last one. Also is that a braid I see in his hair? I thought he didn't have any anymore. That makes me happy (and my headcanons related to this go brr...)
Nooo, Eleanor has betrayed him once again. This makes me sad.
"I hate to say this, but is it possible we missed the point of that story?" Hahaha, Silver trying to head off another one of Flint's crazy ideas at the pass.
Jack is also truly upset that their plan for Nassau went south. My poor baby. ;_; But at least he has Anne being pragmatic.
"Have you done this before?" "No. You?" "No." Well that inspires confidence.
Also fire on a ship made almost entirely out of wood makes me nervous!
"Charles Vane sees past his anger to achieve the greater end. How did that happen?" So we all wonder.
"I was taught a lesson once. It's been effective." T__T Don't make me relieve that one! My poor shipper heart.
Rogers has the right instincts for once, unfortunately.
Also how can all these pirates swim? Is that a requirement to be on Vane's crew?
Yeah, I mean, why wouldn't you try to sink the fire ship? But I have a feeling there might be a surprise left...
The look of resignation on Rogers' face. And the satisfaction on Vane's and Teach's. (Also I approve of Charles Vane dripping wet. Sorry not sorry.)
And now the rest of the ships can slip the blockade, yeeeeees.
Oh, time for some more honesty between Flint and Silver, except now it's Flint who's confessing. Maybe that'll do him some good...
Nooo, Flint, don't give up!
Ah, so I was right, this is Madi. She seems cool.
OOooooooh. That is her father?? Yeah, he might have something to say about this. Also that adds layers to his character. How much, if anything, did Eleanor know about this?? Also, wasn't he willing to sacrifice a hold full of slaves (and himself) for her in season 1?? I have questions.
Noooooooo.

In Seasons 1 and 2, Silver often seems to be interested in pariahs and outcasts. In the very first episode, when Billy tells him about his duties as a cook and impresses upon him that in a pirate crew every man is equal, Silver points at the half-witted Randall and asks, “Even him?” In S2 he tells Flint a story (either real or made-up) about a disfigured boy in an orphanage who was likely to be a target for the other boys’ cruelty and malice, but managed to avoid it and make himself indispensable by becoming a gossiper. We don’t know anything about Silver’s past, but these motifs suggest that perhaps he, too, in spite of his charm and intelligence, found himself in some circumstances where he was considered inferior, treated as an outcast or was even victimized by the community. It may have reduced his own sense of worth and his hopes of ever being fully accepted and appreciated by others. This is why, in S2, when he needs to find his way of re-joining the Walrus crew, he says, “they don’t have to like me”, and settles instead for providing a function which he believes they need -- that of ridiculing others and so offering an outlet for the hidden animosities among the crew members.
Tumblr media
And then something unexpected happens and Silver becomes accepted and loved. At some point he stops being perceived simply as an amusing story-teller and becomes fully embraced by the crew. Joseph Conrad often referred to his fellow sailors as “the children of the sea” and there is something child-like about the Walrus crew as well. In their naivety, they start believing in Silver’s sincerety, listen to what he has to say and become convinced that he has their best interest in mind.
But it is not just naivety. The collective entity of the Walrus crew is like an individual in the sense that it has both Lower and Higher Nature. They can be primitive, cruel and violent; they refuse to work unless there’s a fuck tent on the beach, cheer when Flint beats Singleton to a pulp and promote Dufresne when he chews out a man’s throat. But they are also capable of solidarity, loyalty and friendship -- like Morley, who sacrifices his rest period in order to get barnacles for Randall’s cat, and later sacrifices his life in an attempt to save Randall. The Walrus men greet Billy with genuine affection when he returns from the dead in S2, and they perform the sea burials of their fallen comrades with sorrow, solemnity and decency that also moves Abigail during her journey from Nassau to Charles Town. Even Nicholas, one of the two pirates who conspired with Silver to hide the truth about the Urca gold, feels deeply upset about betraying his brothers and it causes him to laugh inappropriately.
Tumblr media
When Silver spreads gossip and encourages the pirates to dislike or fight one another, he appeals to their Lower Nature; when they embrace him as their comrade and brother, they act from their Higher Nature. And this, in turn, causes transformation in Silver himself and compels him to act in accordance with the positive image they have created of him. Flint is also aware that this is a two-way affair when he says to Silver: “It's a funny thing. The more those men need you, the more you need them. And it drives us to do the most unexpected things.”
The two most unexpected things Silver does for the Walrus crew is first, enduring torture in the hands of Vane’s quartermaster and then, giving up his share of the Urca gold in order to remain a crew member. In the torture scene, I believe his motives are still mixed: he doesn’t want to betray the men and cause their death, but he also believes that staying in the harbour and awaiting Vane’s and Flint’s return is his best chance of survival. But when Silver renounces the Urca gold, this is unambiguously an act of loyalty and recognition of his deep connection to the crew. It is also the motive which makes it possible for him to reconcile with Flint. Most likely Flint realized from the start that Silver lied to him and that he was to blame for selling the information about the Urca to another crew. And when Silver finally admits the truth, the most important question Flint has for him is what he did with his share:
“I gave up my claim to it.”
“Why did you do that?”
“Because I saw no way to hold it and remain a part of this crew.”
Flint never wanted the gold for himself anyway; when Vane and Rackham convinced him it would be used to defend Nassau, the way he wanted to use it, he accepted this state of affairs. And when he realizes that for Silver, too, loyalty to the crew has become more important than gold, he forgives him, grabs the oars, and the relationship clicks into place.

how do you feel about vanes arc/vane as a character?
vane for the first season really is “this is the worst person we know but every three episodes they let him make really good points” and then the INSANE ending of season one jumps out; i think that the writers put a lot of effort into making vane a if not fully likeable, then certainly more complex antagonistic figure who you kinda start to appreciate along the way. (i do really wish that they had given eleanor that amount of effort because i don’t think the writers’ attempts to give her a transformation from the first season to the fourth was really effective.) i like that vane is terrible and nuanced and has these moments of reflection but that he doesn’t get a big arc of “oh i’m suddenly a good guy now” and the writers let him exist in that space of complexity irt loyalty, morality, dedication, etc. etc. BUT he still gets these big moments where he comes to rock and i do love the scenes where he’s like “yeah even though i’m not totally into this it’s actually just the smarter plan so let’s go”; then my journey went off the rails with realizing how much jack loves him and the vanerackham trutherism jumped out and thus it was all downhill from there but that’s what the brainrot does to ya!! anyways tl;dr i like *~sexy problematic fave~* charles vane but not as much as jack rackham does

I’m making my partner watch Angel for the first time so here’s some running commentary on season one
I firmly believe that Joss Whedon had a massive crush on David Boreanaz... it explains a lot about this show
it will never not be hilarious to me that David Boreanaz is one of those dudes that compels straight men to comment on how hot they think he is. I did not understand his appeal at all when I was 12 but it makes a lot more sense now.
I recently rewatched Zoolander and now I can’t stop thinking about how he and Angel have the same hair
I always remember Angel/Wesley as a major moment in queerbaiting history but I always forget about how they start acting like an old married couple immediately upon Wesley’s introduction to the cast. Really wasted no time there huh.
I was only casually into that ship back in the day but I’m extremely into it now... please be angsty together. Your combined manpain fuels me.
I understand why some people can’t stand Wesley but I love his character arc a lot actually. I’m delighted every time I rewatch the episode where he’s introduced, I spend the whole time like “hehehe yes Wesley, you will become this rogue demon hunter persona, but first you must suffer total ego death. wonderful.”
The aesthetics of this show are really underappreciated, but maybe I’m biased because I’m nostalgic for millennium southern California
[during the 18th century flashbacks] Henry: “He’s way too buff for me to believe that he’s an aristocrat” “That’s why his father is so disappointed... he spends all his time getting jacked at the gym instead of doing nobleman stuff. He’s like Gaston, if Gaston’s father deeply disapproved of everything he did.”
does Lilah know that i love her
I get so mad at Whedon every time that an episode’s plot seems like an elaborate excuse to get Cordelia into some fetishy situation
it’s so hard to stop myself from laughing stupidly every time there’s a vampire who looks vaguely like Charles Vane
