Comforting Skillet Hamburger Gravy

Ingredients:

1 pound lean ground beef

1/2 teaspoon salt (more to taste)

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 medium yellow onion

2 cloves garlic

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1/2 teaspoon dried rubbed sage

sprinkle nutmeg

2 tablespoons AP-flour

1 cup beef broth

1 cup whole milk 

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1 bay leaf

Instructions:

In a large skillet, heat up 1 pound ground beef. Break into pieces. Let cook until pink-ish. Season with salt and pepper.

Add chopped onion, minced garlic, 1tbsp unsalted butter, and 1/2 teaspoon dried rubbed sage, and nutmeg. Cook until onion is translucent (4-5 min).

Sprinkle in 2 tbsp all-purpose flour and cook, stirring often for about 1 minute (to cook out the floury taste).

Slowly pour in 1 cup beef broth (I used powder and water), and scrape up browned bits from bottom of pan. 

Add in 1 cup whole milk, 2tsp Worcestershire, 1tsp soy sauce, and 1 bay leaf. Simmer, reduce heat to medium low, and cook until thickened (about 10 minutes). 

Taste and season with more salt and pepepr if necessary. Serve alongside biscuits, toast, rice, etc anything.

Notes:

06/19/2022: I don’t think I cooked this long enough. I was in a rush and had to head out for the movie but we ate this for breakfast in the theater and it tasted good. Too much meat and not enough gravy. I don’t like that this recipe adds beef broth; tastes good but makes it too watery. Would add more milk in the future. Be sure to use whole milk.
