Severus would be TREMENDOUS at chess, not only for how intelligent he is or the practice he could have, but he would just read your thoughts and make it absolutely impossible for you to win.
If someone brings it up he'll change the subject, he's not gonna admit he's cheating EVER

Cheated x Opportunist?
(AAH!! Yes! I've started to really get into their dynamic! It would be really funny to see because they'd just try to piss each other off, while not being able to resist the urge to kiss their dumb faces. Anyway, enjoy!)
"Checkmate."
"Fuck!"
Opportunist's victorious laughter was driving Cheated crazy, and he knew the other was just waiting for him to do the predictable thing and flip the chess board over.
But he refused to give Opportunist the satisfaction, so he just gripped the armrests of his chair, and glared at the little chess pieces in front of him.
Opportunist was resting his chin in the palm of his hand, his voice entirely too sweet and polite as he asked, "Do you want to stop playing? It's alright if it's too difficult for you-"
"I know how to play chess!" Cheated snapped at him, "I just keep losing, because you keep cheating!"
Opportunist rolled his eyes, an action that only had Cheated seeing even more red, as the other picked up his queen and idly twisted it around in his grip.
"We've been playing for over half an hour, and you still think I'm somehow cheating? You know, Cheated, there's no shame in just admitting that you're bad at chess."
Cheated glared at him, sitting back in his chair. "I don't think I've ever met anybody as shameless as you."
"Aw, but you love me though." Cheated ignored the way his brain latched on to the way Opportunist mockingly cooed at him, knowing it was just another one of that snake's tricks to mess with him.
It seemed like everything Opportunist did ruffled his feathers, both literally and figuratively. He would always find a new way to annoy Cheated, either by poking fun at his misfortune, or by teasing him on how silly his philosophy of fairness was.
For some reason, Cheated could never just ignore Opportunist. He always felt a need to argue with him and fight him until he slipped up and told Cheated how he truly felt about everything.
He knew everything was a game to Opportunist. He knew that Opportunist would do anything to come out on top, and he had no issues with lying or deceiving to get there-and Cheated wanted to bring his ladder crashing down.
If Opportunist wanted to win so badly, then Cheated wanted him to be fair and true about it, so he kept falling for the bait that Opportunist always held out for him, because Cheated believed that one day, he'd slip up, and then Cheated would be the winner for once.
He sighed, staring at the little chess piece in Opportunist's hand, before his gaze shifted over to the smug grin on the other's face.
Opportunist winked at him, and Cheated's heart fluttered.
"We're playing again," he declared, sitting forward to arrange their pieces back to their correct position. Opportunist chuckled, but didn't stop him, and Cheated could feel his gaze on him the entire time, no doubt thinking of how to annoy him this time around.
The chessboard was almost complete, but there was just one piece missing. Cheated lifted his head, staring up at the queen in Opportunist's hands.
Opportunist smirked, leaning down towards the board, never taking his eyes off Cheated. Opportunist waved the piece teasingly in front of him and mockingly said, "Remember that the goal is to get the queen."
Cheated gave him a sharp and mirthless smile in return, and then the game began once again.
Cheated's attention was split throughout the entire game, shifting his intense gaze from the board to Opportunist, who hadn't dropped his cocky smile once.
Cheated blinked, and then Opportunist had taken one of his pawns. His anger spiked, but he didn't resort to shouting just yet.
Cheated took one piece. Opportunist took two more.
Opportunist giggled at how intensely Cheated was glaring at the board, but Cheated shoved the sound out of his brain, how it jingled and rang out with a light tone inside his head.
Cheated hated him.
Opportunist leaned forward to rest his elbows on the table, resting his chin in his palm. "You know," he said, and Cheated closed his eyes to prepare for whatever bullshit was about to come out, "you'd probably have more fun if you weren't such a sore loser all the time."
Cheated's eyes snapped open, and Opportunist was grinning at him like Cheated was just some kind of entertainment to indulge in.
Cheated leaned forward as well, clenching his fists at his sides, ignoring how close they were as he hissed, "I'm not a fucking sore loser-I just want to be able to enjoy a game and know that I either deserve to win or lose, because of purely how I play and not because someone refuses to play that way."
Opportunist rolled his eyes, and Cheated continued, "Seriously, what would you even get by cheating? Where's the fun in that?"
"I don't cheat," Opportunist replied, never once slipping up despite them both knowing the truth, "but if I did, I'd probably do it to get a rise out of someone." To prove his point, Opportunist moved a piece and took one of Cheated's bigger guys.
"Hey! It was my turn!"
"You were taking too long."
Cheated sighed sharply and snapped, "See? What's fun about ruining the game for others? Nobody's gonna wanna play with someone like that."
Opportunist narrowed his eyes at him and easily retorted with, "They also won't be inclined to play with someone who screams that their opponent is cheating-constantly."
It was Cheated's turn to roll his eyes, even as Opportunist reached forward to grab his hand and say, "But here I am," in a condescendingly sweet voice, like talking down to a child, "ignoring all of that so I can play with my dear friend, who I love spending time with."
Cheated ripped his hand out of the other's grip, his hand tingling with the warmth it left.
He hadn't expected it to feel soft.
"Yeah right," he muttered, missing the flash of hurt on Opportunist's face.
They fell into silence as Cheated eventually made his move, and as he was waiting for Opportunist to go next, he realised that almost a full minute had gone by without Opportunist making a move.
As he was about to ask what the problem was, he heard the other bird speak in a soft, low voice that he's never heard Opportunist use before.
"I am, y'know-cheating."
Silence. Then-
"What?!" Cheated yelled, and Opportunist began rambling, holding his hands up in defense, "I just-I just-you're fun to mess with! I can't not annoy you! You make everything so much more interesting and-hey! You're the one that keeps coming back for more!"
Cheated was seeing fucking pure crimson red as he launched from his seat, grabbing Opportunist by the wrists and dragging him up as well, bringing his face inches away from his.
"I knew you were cheating!" he yelled, "I knew you were a filthy liar!"
"It-It was just a bit of fun!" Opportunist argued, a nervous flicker in his eyes now. "You never say no to me! You always give me a chance!"
"Yeah, like a fucking idiot!" Cheated tightened his grip, noticing how Opportunist's breath hitched at the action. "You piss me off so fucking much, I hate it!"
Opportunist chuckled nervously, and managed a teasing smile as he said, "Aw, I'm honoured to be on your mind that much."
Even now-even now, Opportunist was able to grind his gears, to poke him in that infuriating way that only he could do to Cheated, and Cheated could do nothing but fall for it everytime.
He just wanted to catch Opportunist by surprise for once. He wanted to make him play fair, to be the one teasing him but Cheated had no idea how to do that-
Then, in his blind rage, he caught the way Opportunist kept glancing down at his lips, and he didn't think as he smashed their lips together.
The kiss was messy and rough, with Cheated putting as much force and fight into it, so much so that Opportunist had no choice but to submit, with no time to come up with some clever lie or performance.
Even with all his anger, Cheated felt his body relax into the kiss, and he almost got lost into the kiss, until the moment he heard Opportunist moan.
He pulled away with a gasp, eyes wide and head spinning, as he just took in Opportunist's appearance.
He was panting, with his feathers a mess in a way that Cheated has never seen before. His eyes weren't entirely focused on Cheated, as if he was still experiencing the feeling of the kiss, and he was angling his body towards Cheated with such a needy look on his face.
This-This was his.
This was the one thing between them that Cheated could rightfully claim as his own, that he had won from the other.
This face. This need. This feeling. Cheated was the one that made Opportunist falter this time around, and Cheated didn't care if he lost every single chess match from now on, because this moment was his.
"I-" but then Opportunist hushed, heavy voice was finally speaking again, and Cheated couldn't bring himself to tear his eyes away from him. "I have a deck of cards in my room," Opportunist whispered softly.
Cheated let a shaky breath out.
They couldn't of ran faster.

no because i seriously will never get over tsujimura’s mother. ordering her ability not to protect tsujimura, as would be the logical command, but to prevent tsujimura from ever being able to commit murder, and as a result making her immune to ayatsuji’s ability and therefore kyougoku’s plan. kyougoku was too busy playing psychological chess with his pissy blond student while this woman was running laps around the entire cast
#rori’s liveblogging is reawakening my brainrot sorry folks#i say this a lot (has never said it but thinks about it all the time) gaiden is between ayatsuji and tsujimura but more than that it’s.#about kyougoku and tsujimura sr. using their successors as their respective chess pieces#and their faking of their deaths but only one of them really cheated death#anyway. this is why i think tsujimura’s mom should be included in these bsd intelligence tier rankings#because being a step ahead of both ayatsuji AND kyougoku is crazy work#bsd gaiden

Alan wanting to teach his son things. Alan being so proud of Charlie for being the little math genius that his is, but wanting to have those moments of bonding where you help someone learn. Alan wanting to play golf with Charlie because that something Charlie doesn't know, but only if his kid is having fun.
Charlie who feels he should be better at golf because he knows the equations to make the shots. Charlie who's not having a great time, and once again feeling like he's bothering his dad.
Don stepping in to say "no, actually he just likes spending time with you, and if he can show you something you don't know all the better."
The Eppes family man. I love them
#Also Don and Alan ganging up on Charlie when they chess#Not only were they on a team but they were also distracting him#I honestly thought Don was cheating at first and moving a piece when it wasn't their turn#I'm so glad that the Eppes family is the main relationship of the show and not some romance#I love family dynamics#Eppes family#Alan eppes#Charlie eppes#numb3rs#don eppes

xiaochen, to me, is like. li tianchen is building a house of cards. liu xiao tells him that card houses are fragile so you have to be strong enough to withstand the event of them falling eventually. but li tianchen's card house hasn't fallen yet! so li tianchen just keeps building the house of cards and puts his identity into being a really good builder of card houses. liu xiao maybe even gives him more cards and compliments his house making skills. and it's like. "wouldn't it be fun to topple it later? just pull out one card, and woosh! it's all gone in a second. doesn't that sound fun?" and tbh li tianchen would (and has) enjoy(ed) toppling card houses, but only if it's other people's card houses. this one though? he just built this card house after the last one fell apart and he's gonna be inconsolably upset if this one falls apart too. and it does fall apart — spectacularly, even, that all the cards get blown away by the wind and li tianchen doesn't have any cards anymore to build a new card house. maybe he doesn't want to build a card house anymore. can't be a good card house builder without cards.
so liu xiao offers to play a new game with him. remember when your card house fell apart, tianchen? there are other games like that, games we can play that don't need cards. we can play dominoes. we can play jenga. half the fun is watching something you construct fall apart, you know? here, I'll teach you how to play. do you want to play?
and li tianchen is like. well I don't have cards anymore. I'll probably suck at playing other games, but it'd be nice to play games with someone else. what else is there to do? liu xiao gave him cards earlier, so he might as well see what other games he plays.
liu xiao asks him if he wants to play cards and li tianchen tells him nah, liu xiao should choose what they play. liu xiao smiles and brings out the jenga set.
li tianchen doesn't know how to play jenga but he learns quickly. he misses his cards but it's fun taking turns playing jenga with liu xiao. they're constructing something together! li tianchen isn't playing alone. that's nice. liu xiao wants to play games. li tianchen is good at playing a game; maybe he can be good at playing more than one game.
then liu xiao tells him that this jenga tower will fall too. that's all part of the game. li tianchen understands this. it'd be less upsetting if li tianchen is the one who takes it apart instead, so it's on his own terms, instead of waiting for someone else to topple it. but is it really on his own terms if liu xiao was the one who suggested playing jenga in the first place?
maybe soon liu xiao will topple the jenga tower they built together. but it hasn't happened yet! when (not if) it does happen, well, li tianchen has gotten good at playing games now. so liu xiao will keep playing with him, right? liu xiao likes games, and li tianchen is a good player. and good players aren't afraid of game overs anymore. it's all part of the game.
#mine musings#liveblogging link click#link click#idk how to explain them but do you see the vision#actually i think perhaps lx likes to “win” or execute a good strategy. not just “play games”#'cause let's be real. lx would cheat if he can get away with it lmao#ltc is also not above cheating but not against lx. maybe “for” him though yeah#the thing is now lx can just make up the rules and tell ltc it's a new game and ltc will be like. cool. let's play#lx can tell him he's a chess piece. lx can teach him russian roulette. ltc doesn't set boundaries#“you can quit anytime” as if ltc would ever quit anymore. he's a player now. if he doesn't play lx's games then what is he anymore?#can't be a good player if you don't play games#(they never play cards btw. lx never suggests it and ltc doesn't bring it up)#(i need S3 to have the equivalent of ql showing up one day with a deck of cards and ltc loses it lol)#lx notes#xiaochen

I've been thinking about Frank again and it lead me to remember how Bad he is at chess. So here are my Neighborhood Chess headcanons! 🏠♟️
Frank - Horrible at chess, takes forever to make a move, constantly overthinking, but can recite the textbook rules word for word.
Julie - God at chess. The Chess Master, Undefeated Champion (Chesspion?). She's only ever lost One game and it was against Jonesy back in the cave. They don't talk about it.
Barnaby - Knows how to play chess but would rather mess with the other player (Frank) and use slight of hand to steal/replace pieces on the board. Good at chess while cheating, decent without.
Howdy - Knows how to play chess but always tries to make trades/offers to the other player to swindle a win. "My pawn for your knight! What do ya say?" Is decent at chess but impatient and breaks the rules.
Eddie - Forgot how to play chess, completely wings it. The first time he played with Frank he felt bad when he won. He had literally just copied Frank's moves for half the game because he didn't know what he was doing. Still feels bad when he wins against Frank. Bad at chess but only because he doesn't remember how to play. Would be decent if he remembered.
Wally - Julie taught him how to play chess. Takes a while to move but unlike Frank there's a benefit. Is very quiet when playing. Says "That's the Most!" everytime he wins. Good at chess.
Poppy - Very anxious when playing. Has trouble moving the pieces but makes her moves as fast as possible to get the game over with. Gets overwhelmed, is bad at chess.
Sally - Pretends to be Very good at chess, the best even, practically invented it! Is actually mediocre. She turns the game into a dramatic tale everytime. Monologues over every piece she loses and makes up a piece of story with every move. No one wants to play chess with her except Wally and Julie. Frank only does so because he is determined to win One game of chess and Sally is second worst. She lost to Eddie once and never played chess with him again.
Home - Can't play without assistance. What do you expect he's a house? Houses don't have hands, silly! If someone (Wally) helps move the pieces he's good at chess. No one knows where Home learned how to play chess. Somehow still beats Frank even if no one helps.
#Frank would be a sore winner if he ever won anything#i just know it#Howdy would also try to sell pieces. There is no benefit except Profit#Barnaby doesn't cheat with Julie Wally or Home#Julie bc he's not stupid. Wally bc he cant do that to his best friend. Home bc Home.#Yes he would cheat with Howdy. Its the funniest most absurd game of chess bc Barn is still immune to scammers#Eddie doesn't like playing chess with Frank because of the guilt#he genuinely is so lost the whole time as Frank agonizes about Eddie's “strategy”#bby there is no strategy. Hes just confused.#welcome home#frank frankly#julie joyful#barnaby b beagle#howdy pillar#eddie dear#wally darling#poppy partridge#sally starlet#wh home#typing out loud

this was so funny to make, i missed doing these. i had so many thoughts so i'll put them in the tags as usual hehe
bonus :3
#i imagine nne and tano probably made up chess. when they were bored in their cave one time#maybe not CHESS but some sort of game#whatever it is. it accurately portrays their dysfunctional family when they all played it HFDGH#idk i usually play board games with family so this automatically makes me think of them a Dysfunctional Family#ANYWAYS#top 4 are self explanatory BUT if there was a throw the chess board option kenge would be that#or a cheat option. shupavu would be that#i decided to let nduli goigoi and dogo win! as a treat :)#good for them!#meanwhile janja chungu and tamka don't know what the fuck is going on#reirei kiburi and mzingo are smart enough to win but don't#njano nne and tano are self explanatory lmao#of course CHEEZi has to ask that#get it#lmao#anyway i laughed making this because their pictures look like how they'd react 😭#the lion guard#tlg#tlg outlanders#tlg outlanders memes#god i really did miss making these
