WIP its-not-Wednesday-but-close-enough

tagged by @autistic-sidestep! thank you for the tag :D i have,,, so many wips rn. pulp stop starting a million projects challenge. all of these are very rough, and a lot of them feature other steps, but i wanted to share a few :]

for writing, ive got these:

“What the hell, man!” Mitchel hisses. He’s let go, but he hasn’t bothered lowering his voice. Too loud, but real. Caine groans, pulling themselves up from the mattress. At least it wasn’t the floor– this could’ve hurt a lot worse. They wince at the throb in their shoulder as they reach for the wall, probing for a light switch. When he flicks it on reality re-establishes itself once more.  It’s Caine’s room, familiarly bare-bones. There’s only a singular twin sized bed in one corner of the room and a desk just across, with a heap of laundry they haven’t bothered to do taking up the chair. Mitchel stands on the mattress in the middle, both parts pissed and bleary eyed. His cheek is a lightish colour that’s a telltale sign it’s going to bruise, and a portion of his blanket stubbornly clings onto his shoulder. There’s no threat in here, or at least nothing more threatening than Mitchel annoyed. The knowledge doesn’t stop the blood pounding in their ears.

Marshal Steel has hair stuck in his finger joints. That's the first thing Daniel noticed when he came in to work this morning. Steel has his civilian hands on, which is normal when he has admin work. Those civilian hands will usually have hair in it too, mostly from Spoon. That's also normal. What's not normal is the colour; because instead of the odd tufts of grey fur Daniel's used to seeing scattering Steel's joints, this is a single, longer strand that he's sure wasn't left on purpose. Because the hair strand is brown. Suspiciously similar to Ortega's own brown hair.

-herald is suspicious that his boss is having another secret relationship with a pretty old man, but its none of his business! not at all. thats why hes eavesdropping on them from the breakroom pantry.

“What are you two talking about?” Ortega jerks, nearly spilling coffee all over Wei, tearing a curse out of him as he yanks his head to the direction of the voice.  Speak of the devil. Caine glances between the two, head cocked. When did he get here? Ortega doesn't remember inviting him, and nobody told him he was coming either. Not that Ortega isn't happy to see him, but the timing… “Dios mio, Spot, how long have you been standing there?” he mutters. He gives his coffee a once over, but nothing's spilled.  He turns back to Caine and double takes. The poor guy looks like he's just run a marathon– he's drenched in his own sweat. He's not wearing his raggedy sweater, for once. Instead, he's got a skintight suit with a simple white tee over it.

-a multi-pov fic featuring the same conversation, but told from the perspective of ortega, chen, and caine. trying to practice voices with it, and so far its been fun digging into each of them!

yunmeng sibs monster au :D

It began with the fall of Lotus Pier. 

A complete massacre that nearly ended the Jiang line– save for its heirs and first disciple. No one knew where they had fled to in the days after, until the youngest ran in front of a group of Wen soldiers in Yiling.

Some say he did it on purpose– some part of him wanted to be turned into the monster that chewed up the Wens…

All manner of stories abound about what happened when he was brought back to the ruined shell of his home, but what matters is that they threw his body into the lake. His parents were burned, but the rest of his sect was dumped in the water along with him to become bloated and rancid things.

It continued with the burning of Yiling. 

Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli escaped further after the news of their brother’s death. They managed to rally the towns and villages of Yiling to join Zewu-jun’s growing Sunshot campaign. They became united in their collective rage and sorrow and fear of the Wens. Some even say the Ghost General and the Drowned Doctor helped them.

But their insurrection was cut short when the Wen’s caught wind of their secret planning. Yiling was burned and became an extension of the Burial Mounds. Wei Wuxian was captured making sure his shijie escaped. His core was burned out of him like his shidi’s, and then he was thrown into the deadly center of the original Burial Mounds. 

The soldier’s said the snapping of his neck resounded like a tree struck by lightning.

The end was solidified in Jinlintai.

Jiang Yanli managed to run to Lanling and was found in the streets by her once-betrothed. Jin Zixuan took her in as the chaos outside their borders grew. She was terrified and filled with grief, never thinking she would be left so alone as an anger at the world grew in her.

As she told Jin Zixuan of what happened in all its gory detail, something sour grew in him every time he watched his father speak amicably of Wen Ruohan, claiming that his war was good for their coffers.

Soon, news of the horrors of Yunmeng and Yiling began to reach Lanling. 

Endlessly deep lakes filled with grabbing hands and tangling weeds began to appear under Wen soldier’s feet. Half of Yunmeng was already underwater, and while its people were adapting to a freshwater seafaring life, the only Wen who so much as touched its waters and lived was Wen Qing. She was apparently carried by the currents to refuge in Gusu Lan soaked to the bone, completely unharmed despite her lower than normal body temperature. The comb in her sleeve bought her amnesty from the Lan’s although it was too late to save her little brother.

The dead began to walk in Yiling, led by a flute that almost sounded like the tortured whistling of winds and headed by the furious corpse of Wen Ning. Shadows grew long, filled with claws and the hungry shapes of people. Soon, Wen soldiers begged their superiors to let them fight during the night and burn forests so the smoke would blot out the moon. Anything to be free of the danger of their own shadows. 

A fearful hope grew in Jiang Yanli, and Jin Zixuan couldn’t help but stoke it as he saw life in her for the first time since she arrived. Save for in the eyes of Jin Zixuan and Luo Qingyang, her image in Jinlintai began to change. She was an omen, she was a beast yet to awaken, she was a flare leading the horrors of Yunmeng and Yiling to their doorsteps.

Jinlintai’s fate was sealed the moment someone slipped poison into her drink. She would’ve died that night had Jin Zixuan not given her his qi and fled. 

He took her to where a river crossed from Yunmeng to Yiling and begged the waiting air to save his beloved. 

He was answered by two figures. Two of them stood as if held up by faulty supports and suspended strings– one knee deep in the river and the other standing on now-dead grasses. Together, they were carried to the border between Yunmeng and Gusu.

Jin Zixuan was given a task, one that would betray his family. But as he nodded, he thought that perhaps he would have a new one– his beloved’s family.

Jiang Yanli returned several weeks later, saved by Wen Qing. How, no one knew, but people whispered that she had drunk the blood of her corpse brother, mingled with qi from her beloved and the foul waters of Yunmeng. Others said the Drowned Doctor had taught her to create a panacea for herself– that would surely explain the waxing and waning of her health.

A week or so after her return, Jin elders and advisors began disappearing one by one, supposedly caught and torn to pieces by some monster roaming Jinlintai. No one could track it or sense any demon or resentful creature, and it had to be one, right? Only a monster could hack a person to pieces and tear open their abdomens like that, presumably while they were still alive even.

Three people in Koi Tower knew, and they knew best to keep quiet, although, who would ever expect sweet, mild mannered Jiang Yanli? After all, she had kept her rage hidden under grief and behind closed doors. Deep within the family quarters given to her by Jin Zixuan, no one would see her drop golden cores into her soup pot and simmer them in ichor extracted from Yunmeng’s waters and Yiling’s shadows. No one would believe that anyway.

She disappeared for weeks at a time, and no one would say where, but the smell of ash and stagnant waters and rot always clung to her when she returned. No one would dare say anything. Not after the subsequent failed poison attempts.

does Chen tell the surviving sibling that he's even looking for the others? that he doesn't trust it? or does he not want to give them false hope (its not like he told ortega anything either). would he show the survivor the autopsy pictures - or ask about them in general? get answers from them? he thinks the pictures are either doctored or at the least show an autopsy, not a surgery. so he probably wouldnt show the survivor pictures of their dead siblings. but if he did. the survivor would realise that isn't an autopsy. that is surgery. your siblings are alive.

My Original Character Amy. She’s a human clone and a former assassin/child soldier, the Master of Space (forcefields and portals), falls in love with Lloyd and is very protective of him plus they have a cute aspec romance, and her arc is all about learning that her emotions aren’t a weakness to let people love her and that’s she’s not a broken monster.

The rainbow colored ninja being very queer as the universe intended: Gay Ace Cole, Trans and Pansexual Kai (plus Lavashipping galore!), Trans and Bisexual Nya (she and Kai swapped genders and names), Trans and Bisexual Jay, Genderfluid and Pan Zane, Asexual Demiromantic and Genderqueer He/They Lloyd, Genderqueer and PanAce Pixal and other characters are obviously queer as well.

Mental health issues galore that you can’t convince me these ninja don’t have at this point: everyone has PTSD, depression, anxiety, and lots of trauma!

Also autistic and adhd ninja because i said so: Autistic and ADHD Lloyd (he gets the autism from Garm and the ADHD from Misako), ADHD Kai (gets it from his mom), ADHD Jay (also from his mom), and Autistic Zane (his father built him that way because he is also autistic).

Addressing the Garmadon family’s generational trauma BECAUSE THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL-

Lloyd’s relationship with his mom is complicated BUT after Lloyd has an understandable anger outburst Misako realizes “Fuck I messed up and hurt my kid” and spends a very long time trying to be better and fixing her and Lloyd’s relationship- and they do have a good relationship by the end! (because fuck doing nothing over actually working on fixing their mistakes and actually making up for it and people being complicated and imperfect people)

Love triangles are OUT, trauma triangles are IN

Jay actually gets character development in Skybound AND KEEPS SAID DEVELOPMENT, including Jay having to learn how to have a healthy relationship with Nya and stop bulldozing over people’s boundaries/having unhealthy obsessions with people (which is actually a result of trauma)

^^^ also actually exploring Jay’s birthmom in Prime Empire instead of introducing her then only mentioning her once several seasons later (and not even by name)

Also more sibling stuff in general over the romance because Jay and Nya’s relationship over Kai and Nya’s WHY?!?! (also Smith sibs adopting Lloyd, and all the ninja being even closer as a family obviously)

Consider the stupid love triangle with Wu Garm and Misako GONE. Don’t worry though, I give the brothers a much more believable and angsty reason to start fighting in Season 4 :))) (hint, it has to do with their repressed trauma from their dad’s not so great parenting)

Kai gets his own season with plenty of angst and character development as he deserves. The Green Ninja thing and Chen’s staff thing and being abandoned with a baby sister to take care of and putting all his worth on protecting others will ABSOLUTELY BE DISCUSSED

^^^ also Lavashipping will be included with Kai and Cole finally confronting their feelings for each other and going from on and off friends with benefits to the cutest boyfriends/husbands ever

Exploring the Dragon vs Oni and Creation vs Destruction concept more and using Lloyd and his family to illustrate that what the world really needs is a balance of both (also Lloyd and his dad keeping some Dragon/Oni features at the end!!!)

The ninja actually having to recover from when they very severely injured, or say, fucking possessed (why didn’t they even mention how Lloyd would’ve had to recover from that, the fuck)

Also Wu being confronted multiple times for his bullshit (which, suprise suprise, is a result of trauma), and he actually has to fix his mistakes and try to be better

Fixing everything wrong with Rebooted, Skybound, March of the Oni, Fire Chapter, Prime Empire, and Crystalized (I’m a writer myself, there are some things that drive me crazy and I NEED TO FIX THEM-)

More family time and mundane domestic stuff in between the ninja-ing- just the ninja spending time together and acting more like family/roommates in general

Prime Empire actually makes sense, Jay gets actual character development AND we actually explore his birthmom

Morro and Harumi are deeply traumatized BUT they let said trauma make them assholes and use it as an excuse to hurt people and they become even worse (Morro and Harumi stans BEGONE THIS IS NOT FOR YOU)

^^^ this will include Harumi developing an unhealthy obsession with Lloyd and it turning into creepy/predatory behavior, and there will be off screen sexual assault at some point, be wary of that

Exploring what life with Lloyd and his parents pre-banishement was like, complete with angsty-fluffy feels

Actually talking about addressing everyone’s trauma in general (and giving them more trauma because I’m that bitch :DDD )

There’s probably more I’m forgetting but that’s the gist of it for now

New AU time: TLNM but the Dorksquad are dream chasers. I think regular Garmadon attacks still happen maybe? But they also fight Garm in the dream realm maybe. Or maybe Garm was banished to the dream world? Who knows-

Anyway, Chen the cheerleader is also in this. The Dorksquad discover his crappy home life through his dreams. Chen’s also a dreamcrafter but doesn’t know it and created his pet snake, Twig the same way Mateo created Z-Blob.

Each of the Dorksquad also get cool dream world forms:

Lloyd’s is inspired by a dragon (all of the RGB sibs have dragon traits because of Lloyd).

Kai’s is cheesily fire- inspired with a flamethrower on his arm like his mech has.

Nya’s is heavily inspired by Lady Iron Dragon (just water-based).

Cole’s is some combination of things his mother used to wear and a retro style.

Jay’s is aviation-inspired with a very big scarf, goggles, and a hat.

And Zane… well, one would expect him to imitate a meme, but he instead elects for a dark blue uniform, clearly oriented for the winter (it’s based off his missing Papa).

So yeah! That’s the basics of the AU! I’ll make a post about Whint’s role in it later (translation: right after I post this) >:3

Hello hello! Thank you for the tags, @cutestkilla, @you-remind-me-of-the-babe, @yellobb, @raenestee, @artsyunderstudy! I have loved reading what you've shared and getting these neat little glimpses into your lives (also taking notes for who I can ask when I have research questions about travel planning, designing clothes, swimming, etc... y'all are such a talented and interesting bunch!).

I'll skip on tagging this time, since I think most of the folks I would tag have been tagged already, LOL.

1. Are you named after anyone? Yes! My paternal grandfather is named Gregorio, as is my dad, and my both of my brothers' first names are Greg, so I wound up with "Gretchen."

My aunt tutted and said that people would think I was a blonde and blue-eyed Heidi of the Alps type, so my family and friends have always called me Chen, or Chen-Chen. I have a cousin who is named after me, and when I was holding her as a baby, I'd refer to us as "Chen Squared."

2. When was the last time you cried? Oh, yesterday. Writing poetry for a therapy assignment, LOL!

3. Do you have kids? Non. This was something my spouse and I debated for YEARS, and went back and forth on. We settled on not having kids, but being more involved with the little ones in our lives. The kids we are closest to are my spouse's half-brother and sister (they are nine and five), and my godchildren (who are nine and four). For Filipinos, the relationship between godparents and godchildren is really special, and I love being "Ninang" (godmother) to my beloveds.

(It will probably not be a surprise to anyone who has read "Jelly Babies" or "Baker boxer teacher grief" that my spouse's relationship with his younger sibs influenced my depiction of Baz with his sibs).

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? LOL, more so when I was younger and more barbed! I've embraced the joy of being more maudlin and earnest as I get older.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?  Clothes. I think it's a writer thing, where I like clocking what people are wearing so I can use the details as story fodder, haha. But as part of my job, I work with people face-to-face a lot, so I also try to gauge what mood people are in and how open they are to talking.

6. What’s your eye color? Dark brown!

7. Scary movies or happy ending? Happy endings! My best friend is a horror fiend, which is hilarious because I'm the biggest baby when it comes to scary movies.

8. Any special talents? Hmm... I can type around 100 WPM (Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing was one of the first computer programs we had in my house). I've been told I have a nice phone voice, so I used to record all the voicemail messages for our office. I've also been told that I put together kickass care packages. 👍🏽

9. Where were you born? Winnipeg, Manitoba.

10. What are your hobbies? Gardening, cross-stitch, cooking, baking, painting (poorly), video games, reading, fountain pens, anime/manga. I think like others, my gardening sort of falls off in midsummer and I just try to grab every zucchini before they grow huge. 😆 I love to sing though I'm not very good at it ("Try the Worryin' Way" by the Fabulettes is a FANTASTIC song to belt in the shower).

Oh, I also find it very soothing to clean and fiddle around with my mechanical keyboard (I used a Das keyboard with Cherry Blues for a long time, and just switched to a Nuphy Halo 75, with delightfully clicky Gateron Blues).

11. Do you have any pets?  NO, SADLY! I'm allergic to cats and my spouse to cats and dogs (which is a shame, because animals adore him). I just cuddle other people's dogs and admire their cats from a distance. We have a neighbourhood cat that likes to roll in our catmint in the summer.

12. What sports do you play/have you played? Badminton, swimming, rollerblading. I am also asthmatic and uncoordinated, so organized sports were a trial growing up; in 8th grade, I skipped gym as much as possible by helping out my Art teacher after class.

13. How tall are you? 5'0" (I'm a shortie, it's just how Filipinos roll)

14. Favorite subject at school? In high school, English Lit, and in uni, Film Studies. I learned more about writing from Film Studies than I ever did in English.

15. Dream job? For the longest time, I wanted to be an English professor. Then I dropped out of grad school because of Depression, went back after a year, graduated, got a closer look at the job prospects and work culture for academics and said "No thank you."

Reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert really changed my expectations. Instead of wanting to make it as a professional writer, I switched to wanting a stable job where I would have the work-life balance and resources to pursue writing in my free time. And now I have that! So I am living the dream!

Heterostructured nanoflowers for high-performance sodium storage

A Chinese team has published new work on battery designs employing heterostructured nanoflowers in Energy Material Advances.

"Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have shown to be promising candidate to replace lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), because Na is considered ubiquitous on Earth," said paper author Jun Song Chen, with School of Materials and Energy, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. "However, the larger atomic size of sodium than lithium results in retarded charge diffusion and severe volume change during sodium storage, thus deteriorating the cycling stability and rate performance of SIBs."

It is crucial to design unique electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical properties to address these drawbacks. Chen explained that transition metal sulfides are attractive for sodium storage among various anode materials. Besides, constructing heterostructures is also effective to enhance the electrochemical properties of active materials, which induces a strong internal electric field at the interface between two components, offering extra driving force for the ions and electrons transport at the boundary.

what happened to rumis biological parents? did they still die in the g.d attack but at a different time bc. idk timeline shenanigans?

how are our kids gonna react whenever they learn about the gn prophecy? is morro still gonna go villain on us?

and, the two most important questions to ME, does morro see wu as a father figure, and do lloyd and rumi see Morro as an older brother/cousin figure??

Morro's older than the green sibs and the green sibs are teens for exact ages I haven't figured that out yet.

so Ninja are around but none know each other (except nya and kai obviously) and they lead factions as they try to not die to Garmadon, he as usual doesn't care for them and just wants them out of the picture. None of them were taught how to use their elemental powers to they're all very destructive when they do, they've all learned of them but none know how to control them that well.

All the previous elemental masters were hunted down and killed. Rip them. so none of them know their parents/ have mentors. Jay has a very hazy memory of his parents leaving him with his grandparents (which he just calls ma and pa (ed and edna)) Kai remember's their faces but not much else, nya like Jay has a very hazy version that gets blended with Kai a lot, Cole remembers his mom (he has his dad...for now) and his dad tells him about her when he can, Zane doesn't remember his Dad as per usual.

So back to the factions they don't get along with each other, all preferring different things and not trusting each other. They may be young (young adults maybe) but they lead and make all the big decisions, keep rations and other stuff like that. There are other fractions too like Chen probably has one and other random people plus other's I'm probably just forgetting about right now.

so the ninja since they run into each other a lot, have bands that tell each person whose faction they're from ya know red, black, blue, and white. Nya's are with Kai, the two lead together.

Yes they're trying to defeat Garmadon but not heavily, like the ninja have never known a time without him, so while they want him gone they don't really know if that's possible. or I"ve just not given them enough thought yet. feel free to give any suggestions you have!

Garm would never it was a mix of Anger (things not going his way) the venom and the overlord that caused him to hurt lloyd, and like the split second after it happened garm was back in his senses and wanted desperately to help his son but Lloyd had ran off already.

so the g.d hasn't been released yet, none of the serpentine have, that'll change soon though, but yeah it hasn't been released yet, her parents are dead, they died in one of garm's attacks as he tried to kill the rebels. Or just people that get on his nerves.

And then he saw a child, a little girl all on her own, so Garm (cause he's still a softy) took her in, her being young just kinda went with it she didn't realize that Garm cause her parents to die, till later, she's not sure how she feels on this, while she loves and cares for garm he also killed her parents, so she has mixed feelings. but she also just likes to blame the venom for her parents deaths.

ok ok so when they learn if they lean before they cure him, they're not gonna like it, but no Morro wont go villain, why would he? he's never been told he was going to be the legendary green ninja so he's just like "Wait you mean to tell me that he has to fight his Dad?" he's as appalled as lloyd is to it, Lloyd very much just refuses to be the green ninja. Harumi's just worried why would lloyd have to kill their dad? He'd never their dad was nice!

Yes Morro's mostly refers to Wu as Dad sensei or master why talking about how he trained him and stuff like that. but mostly he just calls him Dad. And Yes Lloyd and harumi see Morro as their cool older cousin/brother, but hate it when he tells them stuff like "don't kill them!" or "no you are not allowed to maim them!" afhlksj Morro's the only one of the three to have morals and he's trying to teach the other two.

anyways. Internet friends B and E who know nothing about each other than they are really good “”friends”” and both love classical music. A kpop star. and E is like, so painfully in love with this musical nerd who listens when Eddy speaks, not because he's //Eddy Chen// but because he just...does. So Eddy is like; I need to meet him irl and show him my money and hot bod and insane dance skills and he’ll fall in love with me.

So he essentially bullies a reluctant B into meeting up. and B is. so incredibly unimpressed. Like he's like “i think you're so cool, idgaf about your money or fans. wanna go see sib 7 with me?” and E is devastated and thinks... well if B isn't impressed by his fame then there's no way B could ever be interested in him at all. So they keep on talking and B is just so happy getting to talk to E about music and have his “”friend”” around; who just gets him-- even tho he's so busy being a famous pop star.

but E just. cant handle it. he's so in love and if B doesn't want him as a superstar then E just need to get away. So he becomes distant, responding less, not answering B when he asks to meet irl again, and B is confused and heartbroken (because he never really felt ""friendly"" about E. Until he flies to E and does the whole dramatic “i don't want you as a popstar, but i do want you; I want to talk about music and bubble tea and books” and then they kiss and live happily ever after

The Jiang sibling dynamic is so interesting because they all perceive themselves as the outsider in the relationship.

Jiang Yanli is the eldest emotional support sibling, and the only girl, probably feeling separated from the maternal role she was forced to take. Despite being a child herself, both boys came to emotionally rely upon her support, differentiating their relationships as the boys were friends as well as siblings. The boys were also both stronger cultivators, giving them a social advantage as she was unable to build a strong cultivational base and was heavy with the knowledge she would one day have to marry out.

Wei Wuxian is the adopted one, who felt separated and due to his non-blood relation to the Jiangs and being constantly forced to acknowledge that due to Madam Yu. As a result, Wei Wuxian’s role as a sibling and family member probably felt unsteady and unreliable, a thought in the back of his mind that he could be pushed out of the main household any day, especially if his ‘usefulness’ had expired.

Jiang Cheng is separated by his duty to the sect and the close relationship Yanli had with Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng by his role as heir and later sect leader must prioritise his sect over his siblings no matter how much he loves them, and must have sometimes felt as an intruder as Jiang Yanli had a close, almost maternal relationship with Wei Wuxian who had no stable adult figure he felt he could emotionally rely on.

Keep in mind that all of these come from their own perspectives and none had a stable, adult parental figure who’s love felt unconditional. All of the Jiang siblings loved each other wholeheartedly but simultaneously felt as if they were the outsider in the dynamic, creating a system of unhealthy communication and generating uncertainty as to the role and value of the love of the other two.
