Riot has been really good about some monetization stuff for the past ten years- its admirable for a f2p game... Except now that they have been branching out- especially into the mobile market- things have been slowly, quietly, getting grubbier and grubbier and it’s something that is so depressing to see happen in real time.

Competing with the mobile market is a flimsy excuse, but its there. It’s only lost when you remember that they have entire, differing game/clients for the Chinese players anyways. The game doesnt even look like our version, and yet they’re shoving desired customization behind a 2% drop chance gacha. Only after trying to take away the little legends from ARAM players by claiming it would impact clarity. (In what world would chibi lux sitting a whole turret back cause a clarity issue...?)

Back in the beginning the FOMO behind the grindy ass event passes left me taking several month long breaks after grinding out a prestige skin for my favorite champion. They were one or none chances, and that felt bad. They realized that after two years and rectified it, but only by quietly stopping the announcements of who was on the list for a skin, or even just the order of the currency type for the skin. Now you have a period of a few, silent weeks to get 125 ME for a showcase skin if you want the icon and border, or you have to wait an undetermined amount of months for it to be one of 3 ME skins to rotate into the shop- which also rotates whenever they want, without warning. That goes without mentioning that’s if you didn’t have the hindsight to spring for the ME in the last event pass, with no certainty that the next FOMO skin would be for ME- considering ME costs as much as a prestige skin but more because ~oh icon~, and thats for the people who want to throw money at the event pass but didn’t want either of the two skins IN that pass- which, if you want both, GOOD FUCKING LUCK. Don’t even try to think about wanting all three, both skins and ME for undisclosed shop rotations or next ME skin.

Don’t even get me started on WR’s events- I’ve been saying since the announcement of the SG skin ports from WR that if they expect PC players to shill and grind as hard as I had to for a SINGLE of the two Redeemed skins, they’re out of their minds. Even I have my limits on whaling.

It’s so strange that their transparency has gotten so much better in things but has virtually disappeared when it comes to anything tied to monetization.
