i have a dilemma (author ramble) ༯

Hi lovebugs,

I was up late last night making notes and continuing to develop each character in contra spem spiro, when I came across an ~issue~.

I started the IF with the intention that every type of MC will be able to romance the ROs. Then, I started actually writing them and figuring out their backstories, their wants and what makes them tick. And I realize that not all of the romance options would be..well..attracted to every type of MC. Some clash in an unsexy way.

I was figuring out dynamics with various ROs and some weren't gelling. I was trying to write my way through molasses.

Namely, Veronica/Vincent with sunshiny MC's, and Cecelia/Chase with stoic, abrasive MC's. They just wouldn't like them (romantically at least, friendships are different) or find them attractive personality-wise. It's nothing personal, but we all have different "types" and people we get along with better than others.

I was making a likes and dislikes list for Veronica/Vincent, and they don't like people that are: needy, always need to be protected or saved, reckless, overly happy and optimistic. For V to like someone, they have to respect them. (I'm a pretty bright, sunshiny person myself, so trust i was devastated when I realized that V would not like me omg they strict af)

For Cecelia/Chase, a stoic, cold MC reminds them of their father. And that is a can of worms they aren't enthusiastic to open. They have a lot of angst regarding their father and so they want a partner that makes them feel loved and will say it to them. C, once they realize their feelings, wears their heart on their sleeve and wants their partners to do the same.

My dilemma is that I want to stay true to my characters and writing a story that makes ME happy. But I don't want to disappoint people. At the end of the day, I'm the one who has to write out all these scenes. If I don't like what I'm writing, if it doesn't feel right for me, i'll be less inclined to keep writing. If something isn't working, then it isn't working.

Which means I have a few options.

The first is to stat-check/personality lock Cecelia/Chase and the V/Z/MC Poly.

The second is to adjust MC's personality so their core personality is set and the readers can tweak their reactions/personality up to a point.

I'd rather have people be able to choose MC's personality and have ~consequences~ for that than have them play a pre-determined MC.

I don't know, I just want my characters to feel like real people, not just ~romance options~ that will like the MC no matter what.

So ur my babes. You all are carbon copies of me, bc my friend, you and i we struggle the same, we drink the same poison, everyyyyday and night. U see we are too much of hopeless romantics with too much of optimism and need (infinite) amount ot expectations of love. But you see that's our biggest most stupidest characteristic, bc in this age and time of situationships and all this new bullcrab, love is hard to come by. The things whether it's love, appreciation, and that sole amount of focusness almost doesn't exist ( it does dont worry and will probably find it one day but baby the time is not now).

Our night with his shinning armor is not here yet, he might take a bit longer than the average ( he needs to hurry the fuck up or else i as in we will lose it ) nor is our happy ever after. I feel like we have so much left to do, so much left to explore and experience within ourselves and outside that the universe or whatever thats planning our fates is saying that it's too soon for him to arrive yet.

Thoughts on Yu post c3e29

I want to be clear: if Yu were a real person, I would hate them. They are unequivocally terrible. I've seen some things going around to the tune of "they didn't attack the party, just talked sexily evilly" and "stabbing was an overreaction" and "actually, Birdie seems just as untrustworthy for stealing the crown/making this machine that will definitely have unintended consequences." And let me just say - no. Absolutely not. To run down the list:

"They didn't attack the party, just talked evilly." A number of different people have already covered this, but you don't have to attack people physically to hurt them. Yu constantly gaslights ("I have been forthright with you about most things"), emotionally manipulates (turning into the half-elf man and Imogen, making Fearne doubt her affection for her mother/grandmother, bringing up Delilah, all the circular arguments about trust), and belittles ("you need me, you couldn't survive without me, you couldn't even choose breakfast without me") the party. This is absolutely intentional hurt, much like Saundor and his emotional manipulation of Vex'ahlia in Campaign 1.

"Stabbing was an overreaction." For DnD, with a legacy of stabbing bad things? Not really. In terms of causing yikes-damage to Yu, the only people who try are Fearne (it's Fearne) and maybe Birdie with the sneak attack. Orym does a bunch of damage as well, but mainly wants to knock Yu prone; the damage stacks because Yu keeps succeeding on strength checks. (He also jabs at her back a lot, but those seem to be escalating warnings.) In a world where you have healing spells and long rests bring you back up, the act of stabbing becomes a lot less dire than in real life. It's fiction, y'all!

"Actually, Birdie seems just as untrustworthy." So? Whether or not Birdie has bad intentions or has worked with bad people, this does not change the fact that Yu infiltrated the party, repeatedly lied to them, and then done all the above stuff when Bells Hells confronted them. Or the fact that they're there to kill Birdie, Ollie, and probably Fearne (they did say, "I will end the Calloway line" in their conversation with the Sorrowlord).

Okay. But with all that said: As a character pushing the narrative, Yu is great, and I'm so glad the party didn't kill them.

Again, this is fiction! Yu would be a terrible person in real life, but story-wise, the way they shook up the party is so, so interesting. We got to see Bells Hells confronted with barbs targeted to cause maximum emotional distress! We got to see what they do in the middle of a messy conflict with confusing sides! There were so, so many juicy actions that revealed these characters' lines and priorities, and also really solidified (for me) their actual approach to conflict as a party.

That's great stuff. And the fact that they didn't kill Yu means it's possible they could come back and shake things up again.

It would have been very gratifying if the party had overcome Yu's manipulation and killed her. But it would have been gratifying if Vox Machina had managed to kill Delilah all the way, too. In both cases, I think we got something far more interesting.

Pre-cult, it's whatever fancy lingerie John chooses for her, so it's all very luxurious and dramatic. After he disappears, she can't bring herself to wear any of it any more, so she turns to practical, simple undies. Her partners during that time are mostly women, and they never have any complaints.

During the Reaping, it's whatever she's wearing, quickly discarded in favor of nudity. She and John don't typically have much time for such things, as they're sneaking around about it. She's often wearing a lot of blood though, heh.

Jacob has a few uhm... well. During her time in the trials, Jacob puts her in a few pieces, mostly to better aid in handholds and restraints.

Once she's in the cult and back in John's arms, it's back to all John's choice. Luxury, drama, and accentuating his favorite features.

♥ : Does your muse like to cuddle after sex? Anything else for aftercare?

Sometimes she enjoys a cuddle. Sometimes, with John, aftercare involves a lot more clean up time. Languid showers to wash and then carefully bandaging up each other's various cuts. It's all part of the ritual they've had for so many years, and she's so glad to return to it.

During the Reaping, of course, there's less time for aftercare or anything else. They're each on the fence trust-wise, and in denial and sneaking around, but once she's fully with him again, it's back to all their old rituals.

With most other partners, she's a lot less prone to cuddling or hanging around; John has always had her heart, so there's little room for anyone else. (Unless it's an AU, then it can vary depending on the relationship dynamics.)

Lil tends to don what'll manipulate her partner best, hitting on each person's particular weaknesses and fantasies.

When she was younger, it was mostly soft and sweet, almost innocent. Silky, unadorned babydolls and nighties. Or sometimes the oversize t-shirt, her own or borrowed from her partner. [Redacted] adored her in these things, during this time they were inseparable and insufferably adorable. Well, unless she was straying where she shouldn't.

During her marriage and the hell of it all, she was forced to wear whatever struck the fancy of whichever john she was being handed off to. It was all out of her control and she hated it.

Once Jacob first entered her life, she started wearing kink. Leather and straps and restraints and handholds everywhere, but always she kept control. She dressed more like a sub, but she carefully managed and controlled everything with him, effortlessly manipulating him to her whims, if only behind closed doors.

With [Redacted], she tended toward more practical and simple, to suit the narrative. Plain old bras and bikini cuts in cotton and basic colors. During the Reaping, this is her go-to, as she uh... gets around, let's say.

When [Redacted] comes to St. Francis, she's splitting her time between Jacob and [Redacted], going from devil to angel on a dime, and her lingerie changes to match her crafted narratives. This continues into the Collapse and New Dawn, though the bleed-over comes out more regularly.

In her earlier years, with [Redacted], she was very snuggly and constantly craving touch and affection of the more innocent varieties. After her marriage, that changed and she closed off to protect herself.

She's skittish about any sort of cuddling through her early years in the cult and during the Reaping, using it more as a tool for manipulation than anything for her own comfort.

She's extremely cautious about it with Jacob in particular, not wanting to become attached to him. [Redacted] coming back into her life sends her through some emotional tailspins, however, and her control starts slipping in all directions.

For Lilith, everything is about control, even aftercare, especially after her experiences during her marriage. She doesn't trust easily and she shies away from putting herself in any vulnerable positions. It takes a lot of time for her to find a comfort in the embrace of both Jacob and later [Redacted] that's not strictly for manipulation tactics.

the story of transition is sometimes messy. whether it is personal or collective or the story of a caterpillar coming undone. transition ain't for the faint of heart y'all. but, we were made for the story.
