The paramedic's words freeze your blood in its veins, sick dread heavy like lead in your gut.

Feet moving before you realize, shove the medic out of the way, only halfway done cutting through her layers. You fall to your knees beside her, finish the job. 

What is that orange…? Spiraling out of central stripes in a pattern you can't recognize.

Hand over her heart, flesh still warm but no movement, no flutter that you've wanted to feel since she came back into your life.

"I'm not losing her again!" You shrug the hands away, normal strength of a person no match for your modded muscles. 

Remember the training, elbows locked, thirty compressions. Eyes locked on her too-slack face for any sign of life. Tilt the chin, mouth to mouth, breathe the life back into her.

She gasps, sucks air like a fish, and relief makes it easy for the paramedics to shove in again. They strap her to the gurney, mask to her face, compression bag assisting her breathing, lift her up, wheel her to the ambulance. 

You stumble to your feet, follow after them, push your way in after them before they can shut you out and leave. 

"Sir, you can't—" 

"I'm a Ranger. Charge."

Flash the badge from your pocket. Been a long time since you've had to pull that card but it shuts them up and you settle in beside her. 

You wipe sweat slick hands on your ruined sweats and gesture to the mask bag. 

"I'm sorry." You're not, but it eases the glares. "She's my…" Can't say girlfriend, she'd yell at you, and it'd be so welcome you almost do. "May I…?" 

He hands the bag over after a brief glance to the other. You follow their instructions carefully, so carefully, eyes glued to every rise and fall of her chest. 

She'll pull through right? 

She's so stubborn. 

Too stubborn to die, right? Always too stubborn. Just needed a little help to get her feet back under her. 

The ride is over too quickly and not fast enough and they take it back from you before you can move, wheel her out, you barely catch the words "respiratory failure" and "multiple complex fractures". You limp after them, your own injuries starting to catch up with you, but it doesn't matter.

All that matters is she pulls through and you have to be sure. 

You're arguing with a nurse in the hall outside the operating theater when a heavy hand falls on your shoulder. 

"Ricardo. You need to stop."

Wei. You almost wilt as you turn.

"But she almost— I can't—" 

"She's in the best hands this city has to offer. I'll stand watch now."  Hard eyes soften as he pushes you a few steps from the door, towards another nurse waiting to take you for examination. "I won't let anyone— won't let anything happen to her. I promise."

Anyone?  Hollow Ground? But he doesn't believe in… What is he… ? 

The nurse almost manhandles you into the wheelchair, interrupting your thoughts, and you spin to call back, "You'll let me know when she's out of surgery, right?" 

"Yes. Now get yourself taken care of." 

"You'll let me know if anything… if she gets…" The words die in your throat, you can't even bear to think about that now. 

"I will. You need to rest."

"I… okay."

The nurse wheels you away and you suddenly remember.

Shal, I hope you are feeling better! I wanted to add something to your Silvia-Amara meta if you don't mind me putting something into the mix as a long shot. Carmen from the djinn dream in What is and Should Never Be looks a lot like both of them. That seems like something!

I'll be honest...I had to go back to remind myself what Carmen even looked like. But yes! Carmen from the El Sol ad! Carmen the nurse! (I always thought she was a nod to one of Dean's psychosexual fixations, too; that is, films with hot men who dance like Swayze (Carmen 1983). I mean, hello Antonio Gades.

Plus, you know his thing for Spanish soap operas... ("Mi amor! Mi amor! Por favor despierta!" Poor Ricardo.)

And Dean's love for soaps from 7x03 The Girl Next-door. (Yes, the "My love, my love, please wake up!" one.)

Ahem. Anyway. Back to our Carmen. *points* Oh, my God. Yeah, it's El Sol, but it's also the specter of the beach. I am choking on my own spit here.

There's definitely something analogous in Sylvia (from season 15's Gimme Shelter) being an idealized something that Connor maybe thought he wanted, felt comfort going after, or tried to make himself want.

For that matter, I think there's something parallel here in how Amara views her love for Dean, too. Amara's view of Dean is idealized, draped in always-or-never statements, and impersonal. Meanwhile, the Dean of season 11 has grown immensely since the djinn dream in season 2. His conceptualization of love has become less romanticized:

DEAN: I can’t explain it, but to call it desire or love…it’s not that.

Carmen was an ideal, and Amara was perhaps the network's ideal, but Sylvia is actually not quite as one-to-one to either of them here. Sylvia was a real relationship with Connor, even if was perhaps a tragic childhood misstep for Connor while he was trying to figure himself out.

Of course, Carmen Porter's own words come back to haunt the Dean & Amara and Dean & Carmen relationships. Even our idealized romantic relationships falter, and they too become as baggage-ridden as our family, and our family is imperfect.

CARMEN: Well, you don't really spend a lot of time together. I mean, I just think you don't know each other all that well.

In early days, Dean's conceptualization of Carmen is adorably immature, like a teenager's dream: someone who accepts my eating habits n' idiosyncrasies, listens to me, and loves me. Someone who is "respectable" and stable. (In season 2, Dean is still, like Amara, dealing with the core wound of his nursery.)

Sylvia and Connor seemed to know each other quite well and were "a couple." He genuinely loved her, in his own way. Their connection just wasn't exactly what Sylvia thought it was, or wanted it to be. She became angry with Connor and called him a LIAR, and then she murdered him.

Dean has carried healthy relationships with dark-eyed beauties as well, like Lisa Braeden and "I-thought-we-had-a-connection" Risa from season 5's The End.

Hmmm. Okay, yes. I think your point is a good point. And it has branching points, too. There's a lot tangled up in here! Season 15's Sylvia Jones has some uncomfortable similarities to season 5's Risa, especially.

If Rachel hadn’t died when she did, would Tess have gone through with telling Joel how she felt about him? They’re both so happy in that honeymoon period after Indy I could have read an entire story set in that time period. (Even if not much would be happening)

How would a declaration of love gone at that point of their story? Would Joel have been receptive to it that early on? (We all know he was head over heels at this point, but would he have admitted it?)

And how would having their feelings out in the open effected their relationship going forward? (If at all) Since we know that the years that follow weren’t easy and that ultimately Tess isn’t able to heal him the way Ellie eventually does.

This is interesting because the whole course of the story really could have changed depending on the exact nature of how this happened.

Also, I would actually like to add a bit to Drifter's Dawn to incorporate more of that "honeymoon" period. There is more in Rachel's chapter of the Ensemble, but I do feel it was rushed in the OG story. ANYWAY. Two scenarios:

SCENARIO #1: Rachel and Ricardo both survive

Tess ultimately chickens out when she has the opportunity later that day. She comes so close to telling Joel, and she can't. He kind of knows what she almost said but he doesn't say it either.

However, the group changes course.

There's four of them and they're stronger. They decide to go south and they go back to the Appalachian Mountain cabin and find it actually undisturbed since they were last there. Tess tells Joel she loves him here by accident (probably mid-coitus) and he says it back and it's all very happy.

Joel teaches the other three a shitload about construction and they build on to the cabin and spend the next few years fortifying the area. It's not perfect, but they are far enough removed that nature takes care of a lot of natural obstacles, especially when there's a rockfall that wipes out the main access road to the cabin.

Over time they have some animals there, Rachel successfully establishes a thriving vegetable garden, and they even find a few other people and admit them into the group.

Joel still grows distant and becomes more and more focused on working the land and building stuff, spending increasing amounts of time alone. But he does have Ricardo, with whom he becomes incredibly close, and it's him who keeps him more or less level rather than Tess.

I never really developed Joel and Ricardo properly, but that friendship actually ran pretty deep.

Tess and Joel remain together but go on quite different trajectories. It's not a relationship like we see in Dusk and Joel never heals properly, but Tess does, and is mentally in a better place than she is in Dusk and beyond.

Maybe they find a young orphan and raise her up or something. That'd help Joel. Chuck a lost kid at him.

SCENARIO #2: Ricardo dies but Rachel survives

In this version Tess still doesn't tell Joel. Rachel is a mess. I mean, she really loved Ricardo. They spent a lot of time together in Indy - he lived with her toward the end - and they looked after one another. They spoke French together and he was teaching her Spanish. They were best friends.

What's also not written anywhere (because nobody who saw it happen lived in the story) was that Ricardo didn't get bitten in the store. Rachel panicked and shot him by mistake, and then she got mauled.

So in this scenario, Rachel would have been in such a state that Tess would not have told Joel. The moment passes. With Rachel so unwell, they would still have made for Boston and probably been billeted in a larger apartment so they could be together. They couldn't look after her in the open.

Rachel would have recovered and become a lot harder. This would basically have broken that kind, lovely spirit and she would have gotten into the smuggling with Tess and Joel.

Heartache-on-Bagley

On one of the very few occasions that Penelope left their new house, she would scoop up Rosalie and head to Henford-on-Bagley. Her parents had never travelled out this far and so she wasn't afraid of coming across them when she made her very rare foray into town for groceries. This time Ricardo met her in front of the pub.

"Here, let me hold Rosie," Ricardo said. "You go ahead and get your shopping done, I got her."

"You sure? She's getting heavy." Even with Ricardo she was reluctant to let go of Rosalie.

"Yes yes, let Daddy have some time with baby," he said taking his infant from Penelope's arms. "Your hands will be full and I don't see her as much as you get to." There was a bit of a bite in that last sentence.

"You know why I ran away, Ricky."

"I know. I know." He sighed heavily. Penelope let it slide.

Rosalie started to fuss when Penelope walked out of sight. Ricardo held her close and bounced her, made funny faces, tickled her side. Still she pouted and whined. She didn't much like being out of sight of Penelope, even being held by her dad.

"C'mon, Rosie, give me a smile. Give Daddy that big ol' smile of yours."

She did not. Instead she pouted and put her head on his shoulder.

Penelope tried haggling with the vendors but with no luck. This time she would have to pay full price for her milk and such.

Thank God I grow my own produce, she thought. Maybe I should just drink my own breastmilk, cow milk is expensive I guess. I wonder how much a cow would be? Maybe I get one when I graduate.

Her mom-ears picked out the fussing of her baby and she picked up the pace. In and out. She wanted Ricardo to have a good relationship with their daughter, of course, but the bond between her and Rosalie was enormous. It was hard to let anyone into their little world.

He was so careful with Rosalie. He smothered her in love and attention and still she looked for her mother. Penelope wiggled her fingers at her baby to quiet the fussing. She took in the sight of Ricardo holding her, trying so hard to bond and not resent how much Rosalie preferred Penelope. It couldn't be helped, they were together 24/7. Ricardo showed up when he could, but it was not as much as either of them would have preferred.

She wished they were physically closer to him, but that meant closer to the Harpers. She had managed to avoid them for a bit over a year now. She occasionally wrote them letters and had Ricardo drop them off. Sometimes they wrote back, but Penelope was afraid to read them after the first few tore her face off with their scathing words.

Penelope finally tickled her daughters chin, eliciting a smile and giggle from Rosalie. Ricardo sighed in relief that she wasn't fussing anymore, but the tightness in his shoulders told Penelope he was still hurt. There was nothing for it. Until he graduated high school, he couldn't be closer to them. Penelope had switched to remote learning until graduation.

Seeds of dread started to plant themselves into her gut. Would this resentment grow? Was this something they could overcome? More importantly, did she want them to? She loved Ricardo and she loved how good a father he was to their little bean. Was she still in love with him, though? Their lives were so different from each other now. She would always hold a soft spot for him, but she wasn't sure if they would one day grow into the happy family she'd always wanted them to be.

Some things just aren't written in the stars.

Detroit rapper Bo$$ has died at age 54. Bo$$ was the first woman to be signed to Def Jam West. DJ Quik discovered her after she relocated to Los Angeles after high school and put her on "Mai Sista Izza Bitch" with AMG. Russell Simmons heard the song and signed Bo$$ to a deal with Def Jam West. Her 1993 debut album Born Gangstaz produced two number-one rap hits "Deeper" and "Recipe Of A Hoe." Bo$$ had the image of a rough street dweller but her album's intro revealed her middle-class origins that included a Catholic School education, ballet, and piano classes. In 1993, there were no other women rappers posing with guns and wearing straitjackets in their videos. Simmons and his marketing team had crafted Bo$$ into the first woman gangsta rapper. Fans did not care that the image was false because Bo$$'s rap skills and charisma in front of the camera sold the show. AMG, MC Serch, Jam Master Jay, and Erick Sermon were amongst the producers who made Born Gangstaz a classic. DJ Premier posted to Instagram to give his condolences and he revealed that they did a remix of "Deeper" that was never released.

She relocated to Houston, Texas in the mid '90s to work with rapper Ricardo Royal aka Coco Budda and they had a personal relationship that produced a son. Def Jam rejected the demos she recorded and dropped her from the label. She spent the rest of the '90s working as a radio DJ with a hip-hop show on KKDA-FM. By the end of the '90s she was battling kidney failure and her relationship with Royal ended. In 2001, she worked on Krayzie Bone's Thug On Da Line album. She released her Six Million Dollar mixtape in 2004. Her health issues escalated in 2011 and she reached out to the Facebook community for a kidney donor. In 2017, she had a stroke and by 2021 a GoFundMe was created to help pay for a medical procedure. The fundraiser surpassed the $15,000 goal. Bun B posted about Bo$$'s passing on his Instagram page and Jermaine Dupri, 9th Wonder, The D.O.C., Mia X, Chuck D, and Slim Thug left comments. Any woman rapper who has rapped about the violent aspects of streetlife has some kind of direct or indirect link back to Bo$$.

Just like Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier, this Tumblr blasted through 30,000 posts with little fanfare. I had no idea when we started 13 years ago, that it would go that far or that having posted that many lobby cards, we would have barely scratched the surface.

This gives me the opportunity to pause and reflect at the wealth and depth of the material posted. Take 2001: A Space Odyssey for example. We posted the US, British, Italian, French and 3 Spanish sets. I'm also proud that we have sets for nearly every single Bond movie (more Bond coming in the near future) and I also hope to complete the Oscar for Best Picture list one day.

He grew up in a upper middle class family, where he didn't want for much but his family still worked hard to maintain everything that they had.

He was always a outgoing kid, but he was never one that was wild and playful like most boys - he was someone that would tend to gardens, cook, clean, and things that the girls or women did, it often pissed his father off, because he wanted all of his son's to be tough - but his eldest brother and his mother always protected him from his father's traditional viewpoints.

His school life was very fun for him, because he was popular and fit in with a lot of the crowds - he was cool and laid back, so he could fit in with the popular crowd or those that didn't care to be seen or recognized.

He got his first boyfriend in high school and it was a big deal, because he was captain of the lacrosse team and his boyfriend captain of the football team - they were the couple of the year. But little did Cammy know was the cheer captain was sleeping with his boyfriend... everyone knew. And it wasn't until a high school party that he found out. Embarrassed, hurt, and scorned Cammy wanted to act out and do something dangerous - but he felt a presence... a Godly presence that stopped him and told him to move on.

It wasn't another two years when he felt that presence... when he was in the same situation, he had forgive said boyfriend, but he was back dealing with his infidelity and this time he was about to show his boyfriend and the mistress his wrath - but before he could he was met by Hera. With Rahadin's marching orders on Vallaki divined by Alkali, there was just one thing left to do: prepare to murder an elf.

Alkali immediately got to work with setting Forbiddance across the town again and discovered the Martikovs had left the Inn in the care of Glita and Gaetor — the local general store owners who Alkali had previously married — while they took care of Family Business.

We grabbed some of Gaetor's egg mess breakfast (the halfling cannot cook yeesh), and whole lot of us joined the Newly Weds™ at their weird pocket fortress they stole from Kalina's attic.

Things needed to get done and we had to game plan - there were so many plans, also we looked over things we'd been stockpiling over the last few weeks.

Lots to do, not nearly enough time. But at least Bandit was vibing.

Before we split up, an octopus floated through the sky towards us. Taron learned new warlock things! Woo! But he was telling us things were ROUGH™ underwater with dead things pounding on their doors. Less Woo.

I sent a Sending to a merfolk vampire we has scared off — his name is Ricardo — and told them if they wanted to prove themselves, to protect the Sanctuaries from the outside. They were Not Thrilled™ but said they'd try. It was the best we could offer the lake until other things were dealt with.

Meanwhile, Tanner, somehow, being the face?? had a few more people to go check in on.

Lady Wachter for one and trying to explain to her that Holtz was Strahd was Something™ APPARENTLY Strahd is just TOO BUSY to meet his people, so she's never actually seen him before.

Busy my ass.

But she was shook enough to maybe believe it, and Tanner made sure she knew what was at stake and what would happen if she turned on us. Then he popped off to the wizard elves who were a little magic hung over in their home-shack (we sort of shoved them in Bluto's old place since he was fish food and Alkali doesn't like the elves anyway).

Kasimir did not want to believe there were People in the lake, and also was not convinced Alkali isn't a man-eating Sahuagin based on Tanner's descriptions on the creatures that terrorized the merfolk prior to Strahd picking up that mantle. But alas, they were warned Rahadin was coming.

Alkali meanwhile took care of updating a very tired Ismark on both the whole Rahadin thing and the whole 'btw two of your council people just got married' thing. Not sure what concerned him more. But he did promise to get her a drink after this and she's holding him to it.

While Tanner had more individual stops to make, she checked the walls, trying to get an idea of what waited for them outside and also told some guards to shove their fucking racism because there were definitely more dead peasants than Vistani out there.

But she DID see an unfortunately familiar Vistani corpse out there.

But the Newly Weds had some Frostwhispers to share the news with, and probably good to do that before war hit the town more so right? So to House Frostwhisper they went.

Faraga was cackling outside and chucking bottled storms at the house to taunt Ethel - Tanner wanted her to bring water to the town... so she got Weird about it. But points for creativity!

Inside, Papa Frostwhisper was shocked by news, a little sad he didn't get to see it, but happy for them. Also terrified for Tanner. GG. Grand/Mother-in-Law Ethel is a nightmare and he welcomed Tanner into the family, but also maybe advised him to run a little

They found Ethel using her current model boy toy to move mechanical bits around for her in her she-shed-workshop out on the grounds. SHE actually made the pump system Tanner was looking for.

Ethel being... Ethel. Did not accept that her ""fAiLuRe"" granddaughter had gotten married. Insisted this was a stupid prank. To which Kalina kissed Tanner to shut up her grandmother, and then dragged him out onto the street.

Grandmother was v angy but Tanner was proud.

Some of out friends had been out looking for supplies or bringing Tanner's things from the Inn to the Fortress, and so the two got to work as soon as they got back - artificers, man, they never stop.

But as the Clerics were rejoining the party.... war horns started to sound...

Rahadin had entered the chat.

With a force of 40~ and 2 fucking undead cyclops behind him, Rahadin had come to Vallaki.

And his grotesque little shouty friend was decreeing they were here to arrest Arabelle on grounds of treason. Like that was going to happen.

Tanner launched a paper bird with a wanted sign for Strahd saying we were investigating him on the grounds of impersonating a noble, but weirdly, that's a charge they didn't care about. So he launched a cold mold bomb at the shouty boi

See Tanner's built these horrific cold mold bombs that just CHASE open flames and do massive cold damage. And when Rowan shot a little bit of fire at it... That shouty bastard did not know what hit him.

Rahadin sent the cyclops forward, prepared to take down our walls, and Alkali simply said No to that, Turning Undead and sending both cyclops fleeing. And you know, Rahadin's not a happy fellow, but it SEEMED like that wasn't how he wanted that to go. Huh. Weird.

Tanner gave us all fly and we took the fucking fight to them, He put up an ice wall around Rahadin, sectioning him off from his army, and Alkali saw her chance.

See Alkali is a siren sort. She guards the ships that sink and she does not save sailors. She makes sure they go down with her ships.

And Rahadin... Rahadin wanted to drain a lake to catch a fish.

She didn't like that.

Rahadin fell, quickly. And one critical hit from our lady elven cleric he'd been quite rude to and one failed save and Rahadin was down.

... his cohorts didn't super want to leave it at that thoogh and called a fucking Undead Dragon down from the skies.

So for under a minute in real time (lol combat) there were two fights going on:

Tanner, Kalina, Mina, and Rowan were all focused on the FUCKING DRAGON.

Alkali and Arabelle focused on taking out the leadership that kept trying to reach Rahadin's body.

See I was going to make sure this genocidal dusk elf stayed DEAD.

And then the amazing happened...

Arabelle managed to counterspell a Revivify on Rahadin.

But the priestess was up to something. Something... I as the party cleric was intimately familiar with.

Y'all its rude to use your player's abilities against them!

The evil priestess got some Intervention. And while her god gave her some UMF, she still had to cast it again. Unfortunately for her, she was right in Sunbeam path and that second revivify never went off. Tragic.

Free diamond though!

Meanwhile, the dragon was doing some fucking damage, it hit like a fucking truck. But Kalina is a paladin now and she slammed some SMITES into those bones. The guards at the gate got to watch their councilwoman just DESTROY a dragon, it was beautiful.

And as the dust settled, Alkali lifted Rahadin's corpse from the field and flew up with it as she and Tanner addressed the army.

Rahadin was dead. Their dragon destroyed. Revaluate. Do you surrender or leave?

One of them got mouthy, so Tanner fire bolted their trebuchet...

...and we returned to the wall to a fucking sea of applause.

They were still concerned about the whole undead army thing outside, but we just cleared out hundreds of them, a dragon, and RAHADIN.

Instant Morale Boost.

Also: Rahadin's in a bag of holding!

That's always fun.

Over lunch, Alkali debated whether she was going to Animate him (SO TEMPTING. SHE REALLY WANTED TO SIC RAHADIN ON STRAHD OKAY) or do the sMaRt thing and funeral rite/curse him so he can't come back. She'd have to think on it more.
