started off October doing some cleaning and relaxing a bit before I get thrown off this cliff called midterms.. really hate this part of the semester. why is it only 2 weeks ??
for 10.03, Monday:
got an announcement for reportings for environmental science on the 10th and airway management on the 12th
me and my partner recorded ourselves for the mandarin dialogue exchange project (we just got the go signal for a recorded one today)
edited the video for mandarin, it's just sitting prettily in one of my class folders on my laptop, waiting for our laoshi to send the google drive link
completed 2 activities for christian ed due on the 7th
for 10.04, Tuesday:
my period suddenly came (actually expecting it within this week but, yk) and good thing I didn't make a mess in my bed with how long I slept - going to sleep at 10pm and waking up at the same hour, just with sunlight this time, hahaha. anw, all my energy levels are down, mentally and physically so I wasn't able to do much today.
attended a class to listen to a group report for airway management
advanced studied for tomorrow's lecture on tuberculosis
canvassed my needs for next week's laboratory activities + scheduled my departure time and such
might go to bed before 12 again today because I have an overlapping seminar (10-12nn) and class (9-12nn) and I think I need the energy to be alert and attentive for both, although the class is more important because we'll probably only meet once... (i'd just need the attendance and some notes from the seminar)

But most importantly- what if Gordon Freeman listens to Metal & used to be in a band? aka. the “Metalhead Gordon AU”

Gordon had to admit that it had been a while since he organized such a big breakfast. It brought his years at MIT back to mind where he and his roommates somehow collectively managed to keep each other on their feet, food included.
 But his worries over the possible mediocrity of what he, Dr Coomer and Bubby might have created - with him being the only one who had actual physical experience with cooking - went right out the window when he saw the looks of amazement and gratefulness at the table.
 Despite having said that he needed neither sleep nor food, Benrey had stacked his plate with a bit of everything that had been brought on the table. If he had been any other person, Gordon would have been concerned. But it was likely that everyone at the table either hadn’t had a proper meal in quite a while or had never had the chance to have one before.
 So when Benrey was carefully layering a pancake with ham, a fried egg, cheese and peanut butter, Gordon just watched with a soft amused smile. 
 Meanwhile, Tommy was losing his mind over the concept of Nutella-Banana toast.
“I-I can’t believe I missed out on this! They never had anything like this at the Black Mesa cafeteria!”
 Gordon chuckled.
 “Doesn’t surprise me, bud. But now you can have that every day if you want.”, he added with an assuring smile.
 Tommy nodded in excitement, already in the process of making another Nutella-covered toast, exchanging his left-over banana slices for Darnold’s strawberries.
 Darnold added the banana to his honey wheat cereal in thought, then looked up to meet Gordon’s gaze.
 “Apologies in advance for prying, Gordon… but I do have a question, If you don’t mind.”
 Gordon blinked over the edge of his mug, cutting the sip of hot cacao short.
 “Sure, man! What’s up?”
 “Well… I recalled your reaction from last night when Bubby talked about exploring the world outside. You seemed… alarmed. Why?”
 Gordon set his mug down, brows furrowed as he looked at his plate. He figured he’d have to tell the Science Team about the outside world eventually...
 “It isn’t as safe as you’d think, guys.”
 “No place is ‘safe’, Gordon.”, Bubby scoffed while cutting his omelette into bite-sized pieces.
 “I am aware, but this is… simulation levels of ‘not safe’.”, Gordon clarified.
 “What do you mean, Gordon? D-Do you guys had natural disasters recently? We understand! We can deal with stuff like that! No worries-”, Tommy threw in, but Gordon held up his hand. 
 “Let me… go get my laptop. I need you guys to know what’s going on.”
 With that said, Gordon got up and went into his bedroom, missing the confused glances the Science Team exchanged among each other. 
 When he returned, Gordon set up his projector and plugged the connection cable into his laptop. He let out a sigh, then opened a folder on his desktop.
 “Alright, welcome to class 101 of ‘Gordon explains what the fuck has been going on on Earth that shit’s fucked up outside’...”, he said, adjusting his glasses and getting into lecture mode. 
 He watched as the Science Team huddled closer to each other at the table, curiously looking at the projection on the wall… but still keeping at it with the breakfast. Gordon smiled softly before reminding himself of what he was doing. 
 “... August 10th, 2013. San Francisco. We thought it was a 7.1 earthquake at first. Bad enough to begin with… but then the video feeds and photos got to the news...”
 The Science Team watched with high attention as Gordon opened up a video file of a news recording. 
 The Golden Gate bridge was swinging dangerously in clear view- until the camera focused on something else.
 Something huge. 
 Something absolutely massive. 
 What emerged from the waters could only be described as a leviathan of a monster. It tore the bridge down with ease and almost instantly made its way towards the city, dragging itself through the water completely unphased by the military attacking it with comparably small aerial strikes. 
 “We called it “Trespasser” since it was the first of its kind we were forced to face.”, Gordon added, his voice sounding heavy with memories.
 The video ended and Gordon turned back, facing his friends. 
 Tommy had his hands covering his mouth in shock, Darnold was holding Sunkist oh-so-gently with horror in his eyes, Bubby was clawing at the table as he stared with wide eyes and even Dr Coomer sat there with concern in his face. 
 The last person Gordon expected to be shocked by this though, was Benrey, who looked positively mortified. 
 “Dude, w-what the FUCK?”, he managed to stutter out.
 “Y-You say it was the ‘first”? There were m-more?!”, Tommy asked.
 Gordon just nodded at that. 
 “The next one arrived 6 months later in Manila-”
 “Six months… that was barely time to rebuild the other city...”, Dr Coomer mused, more to himself than to the others.
 “Then came another one 4 months later in Cabo San Lucas-”
 “They were arriving faster???”, Bubby exclaimed with horror.
 Gordon nodded, pulling up pictures after pictures, playing videos to put emphasis on the seriousness of the whole ordeal. 
 “It was a disaster… We faced smaller ones than Trespasser occasionally… but the big ones got even bigger over time. We faced several each year until only recently. As you can imagine, Earth is still very much damaged in a lot of places because of this. Some areas are completely uninhabitable because of the acidic and poisonous nature of the Kaiju remains-”
 Benrey almost chocked on a piece of bacon-
 “You guys called them ‘Kaiju’??? Like, uh- Godzilla? Big Lizard???”
 Gordon let out a soft chuckle.
 “Yeah… one of the lead scientists behind the research of these beasts is a massive nerd. At first, he only called them that at work to differentiate the samples he got… then the names actually stuck over time in the official reports.”
 Coomer raised his hand.
 “Gordon, how did humanity fight these beasts? It looks like the military was once again absolutely useless!”
 Gordon clicked through his files, looking positively excited to show off whatever humanity's defence system had been- 
 “So, uhm, before I click play… basically humanity got together and formed the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps or PPDC for short. Within the PPDC was the research division… and that included the scientists and engineers who worked on these-”
 What the team saw next in the projection, made several of them gasp in excitement and astonishment.
 The video showed a dragon-like kaiju getting absolutely wrecked by what could only be described as a massive robot.
 “ARE YOU KIDDING ME???”, Bubby exclaimed.
 “Yooooo, what the fuuuuuuuck, man...”, Benrey added, holding his head in his hands, eyes still glued to the projection.
 “This… h-how-”, stammered Darnold, staring in awe.
 “Oh, that is quite the fine work of robotics, Gordon! Very sturdy by the looks of it!”, Dr Coomer observed, giving an approving nod, “So you used these to defeat the kaiju in one-on-one fights?”
 “Well, if we could, we had more Jaeger facing one Kaiju- and yes, my nerd buddy at the PPDC also named the class of the robots.”, Gordon clarified with a chuckle. 
 Tommy perked up at that.
 “That man is your friend, Gordon? Can we meet him?”
 “Well, I haven’t talked to Newton in quite some time… and not with Hermann either… I could e-mail them and ask where they’re stationed so we could meet and catch up? Heh… yeah, I should do that. Newt especially would love you guys!”
 Meanwhile, Bubby leaned back in his chair, arms crossed and glaring at the images still being projected.
 “So… the reason it’s dangerous outside is that these things could pop up anywhere at any moment?”, he asked.
 Gordon made a so-so motion with his hand. 
 “Not quite. The Breach, that’s what we called the portal to their world, was closed not too long ago… but we still deal with the damages and the toxic kaiju remains...”
 Gordon pulled up a photo of an entire coastline glowing in an unnatural blue in broad daylight. 
 “We call this ‘Kaiju Blue’... the closest comparison I could make is that it’s… like acidic oil-like blood. Basically don’t get near any of this at any point. Compared to it, the Green Sludge back in Black Mesa was just a glow-in-the-dark kiwi slushie.”
 That comment earned Gordon a few chuckles and amused huffs.
 “But yes… this is the main reason I want you all to be careful when we go outside. The PPDC still studies what the fuck this stuff can do to a human body… and I don’t want to find out what it might do to you guys. Just… no slurping the toxic alien juice, please?”, Gordon pleaded.
 To his surprise, the team gave him assuring nods.
 “Gordon, normally I would say that you’d be a party pooper… but since we’re all new to this terrifying information, be assured that we will listen. After all, you’re now the specialist!”, Dr Coomer said with a smile.
 Gordon’s tense shoulders relaxed at the reassurance. This was a welcome change from what he had been used to from the Science Team in the simulation.
 “Thanks, guys. I… I know this is a lot to take in- and please take your time to process it! - but I just… I needed you guys to be aware.”
 “Oh, it’s alright, Gordon! I-I think it will slowly sink in over a few days, right guys?”, Tommy asked, turning to the others at the table.
 “I’m already done processing… but we need your laptop for more research, Gordon. I want to know more details on that whole disaster before I take even one step outside.”, Bubby muttered before sipping on his now cold coffee.
 “Of course! And don’t be afraid to ask me about anything, related or unrelated to all this! Honestly, the more I can help with you guys being prepared for the outside world, the better I feel about our whole situation.”
 Gordon turned off the projector for the time being and sat back down at the table.
 “And, uh… thank you all for listening and letting me explain? I’m not used to that from you guys… but yeah, thanks.”, he said with a weak but grateful smile.
 Darnold reached over, putting a hand on his shoulder, while his other hand was still gently petting Sunkist. 
 “Hey, know that we’ll always listen to you from now on. The simulation was one thing… but this is reality. I think I speak for everyone when I say that while bantering with you is álways fun, we won’t push your buttons to a frustrating level anymore. Especially while you’re still recovering.”
 Gordon simply nodded at that, playing with the rim of his shirt. 
 Suddenly, he stood up once more, startling Darnold slightly.
 “Gordon, a-are you okay?”, the mixologist asked.
 Gordon nodded, looking quite serious all of the sudden.
 “I… I want you guys to meet someone.”
 Benrey visibly perked up.
 “Oh shit!- is it son time? Haven’t seen him around so… uh… road trip to go see Gordon Jr?”
 “I can’t wait to meet your son, Gordon!”, Dr Coomer chimed in.
 “W-Well, we don’t need to go anywhere to meet him… uhm… give me a second, I just need to go get my closet key-”
 “CLOSET KEY???”, gasped Tommy in shock.
 “TOMMY, DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT IT WILL MAKE SENSE IN A SECOND I SWEAR!”, Gordon yelled back while he was scrambling to find his keys.
 The entire team watched in a mix of judgement, curiosity and excitement as Gordon unlocked the storage closet that Benrey had sat on top of earlier that morning. 
 They saw his anxious expression completely melt away to make way for a loving gaze as he pulled out something orb-shaped from within the closet depths.
 A sleepy chirp-like sound suddenly emerged from what Gordon was holding.
 “Hey… ‘morning, bud. Dad’s finally back home...”, Gordon said with the most gentle voice any of the Science Team members had ever heard him speak with.
 Another chirp, this time a bit louder-
 “....dad? DAD! YOU’RE BACK!!!!”
 Suddenly the orb-shaped object launched itself out of Gordon’s arms and flew in rapid circles around him, making the man laugh. He reached out and pulled the orb out of the air, hugging it close. 
 “I am! Hey, uhm… dad brought some friends over. They are really excited to meet you. Do you want to go say hello to them?”, he asked gently. 
 The Science Team watched in anticipation as Gordon walked back to the table, arms wrapped protectively around something that was as big as volley-ball.
 Tommy gasped softly as he leaned over to get a better look.
 A small screen on the orb slowly came into view, displaying a curious little face consisting of numbers and symbols. 
 Two appendages, seemingly constructed in part out of computer mice, pulled the small being further up as it looked warily over Gordon’s arm at the Science Team.
 Gordon smiled proudly at the display of mutual curiosity. 
 “Everyone… meet Joshua.”

One mussel, two mussels, brown mussels, blue mussels

Taxonomy is the science of classifying organisms based on their shared characteristics. Although we probably started purposefully grouping things together around the same time that we developed language, the first physical record of classification dates to around 3000BC in China, with the Father of Chinese medicine, Emperor Shen Nung. It wasn’t until the 1700′s when a Swedish botanist came along and developed the system of classification that we use today. Known as the “father of modern taxonomy”, Carolus Linnaeus dedicated his career to classifying plants and animals (and minerals). Carl’s catalogue was a continuous piece of work, constantly being added to and revised as he identified and classified new organisms. In 1758 Carl published the 10th edition of his massive taxonomic collection in a book titled Systema Naturae - and I mean truly massive, by its 13th edition it was 3000 pages long! 
With the introduction of animals, the 10th edition of Systema Naturae is widely accepted as the start to “modern” taxonomy. Carl classified organisms into a hierarchy - which we know as the Tree of Life. From trunk to leaf, least to most exclusive, it goes: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. Carl also developed and popularized the use of binomial nomenclature which shortened long-winded Latin names down to two terms, the first denoting the genus and the latter the species. However, circumstances of the time heavily influenced Carl to describe the world as created by God which led him to classify organisms based on morphological features, such as the shape, size and placement of bones in a skeleton. This was very helpful at the time because until then we thought whales were fish! But, as technology has progressed, especially in the field of genetics, we began to learn that just because two organisms look alike or behave in a similar manner doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re the same organism, or even closely related, if at all. This, of course, led to a reorganization of Carl’s work (and occasionally to the dismay of stubborn scientists). If you’re keen to learn more about Carl or taxonomy check out this video.
As useful as it is, identifying and classifying organisms can get a bit overwhelming, especially when everything looks the same (yeah, I’m talking about you mussels!). I am going to do my best to break this post down into bite sized pieces. So, without further ado, lets classify some mussels.

I figured it’s probably best to start with the common blue mussel, Mytilus edulis (credit: British Antarctic Survey), first described by Carl in 1758.

Quick shell fact: although all Mytilus edulis, the shells above are from high to low latitudes (left to right) and show subtle morphological changes due to environmental factors like temperature and salinity.
Despite looking like a rock (there, I said it first so you don’t have to feel bad), Mytilus edulis is an animal, and therefore in the kingdom Animalia. Like many members of the phylum Mollusca, from squids to snails, Mytilus edulis has a radula, a mouthy bit that creates a current drawing in water and food, a fleshy covering that holds their body together called a mantle, and a shell made mostly of calcium carbonate. Mytilus edulis has two shells, or valves, which are held together by a strong muscle called a foot (which also makes them so dang hard to open and eat), situating it among others like clams, scallops and oysters, in the class Bivalvia. We are first introduced to the “true” mussels in the order Mytilida, which are characterized by having long asymmetrical shells covered by a thick, adherent layer of “skin” called the periostracum; they attach themselves to solid substrate, like rocks, rope, or piers, using a secreted bundle of filaments, referred to as a byssus or byssal threads. The only extant (not extinct) family in this order is the family Mytilidae which contains some 52 genera. One of these is the genus Mytilus which contains most of the edible marine mussels. Finally, we arrive at our friend the common blue mussel or the Atlantic blue mussel, known by its species name Mytilus edulis.

Mytilus edulis occupies the coasts of the North Atlantic, including the United States and Canada, as well as France and the British Isles across the pond. When its range overlaps with others in its genus, like Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Mediterranean or Mytilus trossulus in the northern parts of the North Atlantic, Mytilus edulis will sometimes form a complex and hybridize with them.

But stay with me. 
You’re right, they do look very similar, which is why classification can be troublesome when it’s based off how an organism looks. Classification based off morphological features can be useful, but up to a point, and may be useless at finer-species level-scales. But advances in science and technology have led us into the new age of taxonomy - classification based on genetic sequencing, using a technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR.  Like reading a recipe, scientists can sequence the genome of an organism and reveal hidden secrets like the evolutionary age of an organism, which can help us construct a more accurate representation of the Tree of Life. Along with advancements like data storage, genetic sequencing has revolutionized the way we classify organisms. And it’s showed us that there is in fact a difference (albeit small) between the members of the genus Mytilus. 
I hope you learned a lot this week! I really enjoyed putting this post together, even though I didn’t cover all the mussels that I wanted to. And I know I promised y'all last week that we would visit the some of the deepest parts of the ocean and we will! What Works for You?
In a 2018 survey of 2,000 Canadians, 90% of respondents agreed they feel better when they’re in a natural setting, yet 75% of respondents said they stay indoors more simply because it’s easier (full story here).
I’m going to incorporate what I’ve learned from lectures, labs, and readings into a discussion of 4 approaches for modern nature interpretation.
1. Interpretation through media
Art, film, music, and podcasts cater to visual and auditory learners. In reflecting on our trip to the Guelph Art Gallery, I realize that privilege may affect the audience’s ability to engage with this media. On the other hand, media like podcasts and art on the internet can be easy to access. I enjoy explaining themes of ecology and wildlife biology through cartoons. Following the 3rd principle from Beck and Cable (2011) I aim for my nature interpretation art to be entertaining and enlightening!

Recently I’ve been creating cartoons to promote environmental awareness and foster a love for nature among viewers. Cartoon created by me. 
2. Interpretation through written communication
Was there a book or article that inspired you to explore nature? Reading about nature allows you to take in volumes (book pun intended) of knowledge. I find that reading can help me feel more prepared to go out into nature -- whether I’m about to hike a trail or I want to observe a particular animal. Reading may not be a new, high-tech method of interpretation, but it is accessible (e.g. blogs and online content) and works well for linguistic learners. After all, reading is what? Fundamental!

3. Interpretation through social media
We talked in class about using social media to connect with an audience. The 6th principle of nature interpretation is to know your audience and adjust your approach as needed. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube can help you and reach young people all over the world! Memes, pop culture references, videos … you name it! I made a Twitter account in the spring and currently use it to share things I discover in nature. There is an interesting risk associated with using social media for nature interpretation. Since you’re connecting with so many people you want to be sure you don’t perpetuate any myths and misconceptions.

4. Good ol’ outdoor experiences
This one is still my favourite. I feel that the audience can form stronger connections (Beck and Cable’s 1st principle) and find deeper meaning (Beck and Cable’s 2nd principle) if they experience nature first-hand. I think people need to go outside to become more comfortable being outside. Outdoor experiences offer excitement, adventure, and personal growth. However, you need to be mindful of how privilege may limit your audience. In addition, risk tends to be higher when we offer outdoor programs (think of the canoe trip disaster on Lake Temiskaming that we learned about in class).

If I had gone to college/University here in the US I would have graduated a long time ago 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I dunno about all colleges/universities but the two I've been to? Easy as fuck dude
Like not that it isn't stressful
But listen
Back home?
As a computer science major I had to take all math classes the math majors took for the first 2 of 3 years, which both consisted of 90 mins of straight lecturing, the professor literally wrote the whole time without a single break and we had to copy off the 6 boards over and over, my hand literally cramped up all the time, and then we weren't even supposed to understand it in class, we were supposed to take it home and figure it out all by ourselves and somehow know how to apply it directly to math problems. Also our grade was the exam at the end of the semester, that's it. All or nothing.
Then there was English studies, where we had classes that encased a whole year, and sure attendance was a thing and all but guess what, the only thing that mattered was the exam at the end of the year, you had to know a year's worth of shit on one day and that was 100% of your grade, attendance who participation what tests huh???
Also, papers. 8-12 page single spaced papers depending on if it was your first or second or third paper, using not only books, but books analyzing those books - multiple ones - as sources for your own analysis, annotated and bibliographied with all kinds of quotes in them, table of contents and all. That was again 100% of your grade
The dissertation/capstone or whatever you wanna call it? EVEN LONGER
and guess what, there is no 'fixing' your grade once it's set, no. You either fail and then you have only two more chances to pass (otherwise you're not allowed to study that major anymore) or you get what you get. Have a D even though you could've done better? Tough luck, should've done better in the first place.
Everything is more formal and structured and professional. Your professors are not your friends, you can't just casually joke around with them or eat dinner with them, they don't invite you to your house and let you run around and take your books and go everywhere and whatnot. You can't make a shitty, funny af video and hand it in for a good grade. You absolutely cannot turn in a correction of your paper/test after the professor gave you notes on it FOR A WHOLE ASS LETTER GRADE BETTER, you can't just attend and participate and do simple tests and let that be 50% of the grade, you don't just pull an opinion out of your ass and analyze without having quotes and references from published papers, and a very strict structure and like everything detailed and spelled out first page, table of contents, introduction of paper and your procedure, introduction and explanation of subject matter 1, introduction and explanation of subject matter two, how they will apply to your paper, introduction starting your analysis, explanation and procedure with detailed quotes and references, putting it all together, making sure everything relates and developing and proving your thesis, summary, bibliography with annotations
You dress up formal for your thesis, you present professionally, it's a whole process, a formal event, you don't just go up there in jeans and a t-shirt and casually talk to a small classroom for 20 mins and be done with it like no wtf
Like fuck, I had to write a single spaced 8-12 page paper with a shit ton of textbooks and published papers as resources with everything mentioned above in fucking HS, like 10th grade to prepare me for that shit
But here in the US? Fuck I probably would have finished grad school by now
I went to a public school in Germany that wasn't even like highly acknowledged, and in the US I visited a public UC, and a private college near the east coast and idk man, I'm upset

Wish I had managed college that's all, I'm jealous of everyone who has graduated, you rock
