2020 Memories: Class Is Now In Session

In a lone rambshackle old building out in a Japanese countryside, in a room marked "3-E", a bunch of high school students sit at their desks writing down notes with their heads hung low, the colors bleak and the mood very dispondent. The word "assassinate" is written on papers hung all over the walls around them. From a bird's eye view, we're alerted to the fact that something, or someone, is coming. The spooky music doesn't let up as this unknown force, this unseen entity, makes its landing, and mere second after we hear the door to the building coming open. A squishy, slimy sound can be heard as whatever this thing is makes its way down the halls. The students are getting antsier, gulping with nervous anticipation. Finally, we see a yellow tentacle lay a rule book down upon the nearby teacher's desk. "Alright, people. Let's get started, shall we?" comes the very teacherly voice coming from a hefty yellow octopus with a round head and smile that looks like an emoji, wearing a a white shirt and tie covered by a black academic robe, a matching academic hat, and a tie with a crescent moon shape on it. Like a teacher to his class, he takes a roll call. All the students stand, pull out their firearms, and all fire these pink BB pellets at the octopus creature, trying to land a hit on him and kill him all while he calls students' names and they reply.

This is how the anime Assassination Classroom, which I decided I was going to watch for my Anime Update posts, begins, and it just hits you with the immediate sense of WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE??? It only gets stranger and trippier when it's explained to us that some time back, half the moon got blown up. Then this yellow tentacled being appeared on Earth claiming credit for the moon's destruction and promising that in a year's time, he'll blow up the entire Earth and kill all life on it as his next big feat, but nevermind that now because he's here at Kunugigaoka Junior High School to be the new teacher for Class 3-E! As the students all think aloud in total unison "There is so much wrong with this picture already." But as Tadaomi Karasuma, agent for Japan's ministry of defense explains, Class 3-E is to now become the "Asssination Classroom", where the creature teacher will teach them how to become proficient with weapons and develop skills for being assassins, with the end goal being to hopefully kill this menace before graduation, save the Earth, and be rewarded a hefty millions reward for their service. Yes, that is the actual premise, and it's the most insane anime shit ever devised!

While this seemed largely a comedic work, as you could probably gather from that premise and from director Seiji Kishi's credentials, there was a little bit more to it from the start. Class 3-E turns out to be the class where all the delinquents, social rejects, poorly graded students, and kids who are deemed to have "no future" ahead of them are put so that they can exist as an example for what the rest of the students attending this prestigious academy shouldn't become. It's so bad that some of the students have given up caring who they have to hurt in order to get their chance at something good, while others have given up caring if they get hurt trying to get it. So this new teacher, "Korosensei" as he gets named, is the first authority figure in these kids lives to believe something more could be made of them and not give up on them. He gets horrifyingly enraged and literally fucking threatens the delinquents that he could harm anyone else in the word besides them in order to teach them discipline, then mere seconds afterwards he's giving Nagisa Shiota words of encouragement and making it clear he cares about his well-being. But then the most intriguing thing occurs - we're suddenly given a glimpse into Korosensei's head at what appears to be him in an earlier form standing before a dying woman who requests that he "teach the children" for her, and tells him she believes that he can do it with his mind and his "lovely tentacles". It comes, it goes, and it's never touched upon afterwards. That was my "Grunkle Stan goes behind the vending machine" moment, the part that let me know that I was in for something truly special here. Well, that and the ED credits song that then played us out, "Hello, Shooting Star", which is just pure sweet dreams fuel even after all the insanity has passed.

random school uniform customisations that could've been done in the AC live-action movies (imo)

ok so the assassination classroom live action movies have flaws. But I can't stop thinking about how visually, some ideas could have helped the goal of differentiating the cast, and showing their personalities a bit more.

Two things the movies, due to their shortened runtime, struggled to do otherwise.

BUT.

(click on read more for my whole run-down on how I would've handled things!)

First of all, I understand keeping it all natural hair colors. That's a choice. Black haired Nagisa and Kayano, and maroon-haired Karma? I can live with that.

Why not take advantage of the fact some of the students DO have unnatural hair? As in, it's implied it's a dye that they consenciously do, notably as 'counter-culture', free spirits?

The blond hair on top of Terasakas' hair, along with Rio gyaru-bleach? Kurahashi's implied gradient hair, Maehara chapatsu orange-ish style, and Sugaya's grey bob?

It goes well with their characters too, and would've helped making them stand out!

Same with Ritsu! A norwegian AI moe girl is the perfect excuse for bright hair!

(while we're at it, if I could retcon another thing from the movie, it's making it so that an actual blasian actor is casted for Yoshida. But what can I do now...)

For the more broad uniform differences, I think it's a lost opportunity to not take advantage of the fact the actors have, well, a consistent costume on themselves.

Whearas in the manga format you'd need to keep track of everything by yourself and draw it over and over again.

Upper body customisations:

Okano could have had the tracksuit jacket we see her with in the extra episode, over her uniform. She would totally wear the matching sweatpants under her skirt.

It would've been fun to have Yada wear different scrunchies overtime, and wear the matching sweater! Maybe even a sleeveless one, could portray her sweet, preppy side well.

To tie in with her hair, Kurahashi too could have a nice, cute (tie-dye?) sweater! Maybe on the "fluffier" side?

Hazama could have had a simple black V neck sweater too. Maybe with a pocket on the chest that she pulls out small stuff from. IDK. Maybe a pen attached? A bookmark?

Kayano could wear tacky, pudding themed t-shirts under her blazer! For foreshadowing her link with someone, but also because it ties in with her persona...lity!

Okuda could've worn a lab-coat over her blazer, or even have it replace the blazer! Yeah, kind of on the nose, but it's a 2 hours movie set in a small set with 28 cast members.

Instead of the school-blaser, Kimura too could have worn a sports' hoodie?

There could have been a nod to various baseball stuff through Sugino wearing a specific jersey/jacket.

More! Baggy pockets cargo pants! As of canon, only Okajima, Chiba and Nagisa have them, but I believe it would fit Yoshida, maybe? Even others, I'm curious.

The state of the uniform and how it's worn could be telling too!

Someone like Takebayashi (who, apparently, is the only one to wear the vest, consisting the fullest uniform, along with Isogai!) and Kataoka have very ironed, proper uniforms, whilst Terasaka canonically wears his button-up days in a row.

Nagisa (who would have his pigtails!) also has a too-big uniform for his, showing his whole "isn't right in his skin" arc.

His canon design cuffs his pants, and he apparently had promised his mother he'd grow into it (the uniform) right?

True to her kogyaru/kogal style, Nakamura's skirt could be shorter. She did get sent to Class E partially because of breaking the dress code! (obviously, with the actress comfort taken into consideration)

I like Isogai and Maehara uniforms already, but I feel like for a live-action it needs to be exagerated a bit more.

Isogai's vest could be more visible with his blazer open, so that it differentiates him with Chiba, and also because it is a nod to his job as a waiter.

Maehara's sweater is a nice idea! I think he'd wear it a bit over-sized, and open, though. His tie is also not that tight. He also has trendy, but rather unpractical, shoes.

Maybe some hair stuff could be done too! Nothing drastic as to change totally the original character design, but maybe some headbands or hairpins?

Hara having matching looser socks (extrapolating from her design) and headbands (that could get her bangs out of the way when she does stuff) could be very cute.

Along with hair elastics on her wrist like Nagisa, ready to lend some to others!

Again, adding utility to a piece and building on its existence!

SOCKS!

Kurahashi could have cute legwarmers too.

There could be a diversity in color, length...

Kanzaki still has her iconic black tights, of course, but maybe she could have fancy shoes? Mary Janes? Something, both figuratively and literally, polished.

She could have one of those plastic black hairbands too, adding a little more visual interest to her otherwise pretty basic hair. It also is polished, and could represent the oppresive side of her family, literally weighting on top her. It also has a sort of shine and light to it, which also lines up with the whole "angel halo/madonna of the class" title.

While we're onto footwear...

Shoes! You can NOT tell me Muramatsu isn't a sneakers' fan (sneakerhead?)! (unintentionally inspired that headcanon list)

Terasaka and his middle aged dad-style slippers for the win! I love them. Pantoufles de daron, as we say in my corner of the world.

Mimura canonically has white shoes that kind of denote from others, that'd be a nice touch too. (he also could wear his "directors' style" sweater over his shoulders like in some extra content!)

He also can have his belt too! It can add visual interest, as always!

The bags could be a fun touch too. They're all the same, sure, but social butter flies or passionate souls could have a bunch of charms (or merch!) added to it.

Some could be frumpy, stained, doodled on, emboidered, or filled to the brim...

SPECIAL CASES:

An anticonformist (not that much by belief, but by absolutely not caring about living as anything less than their authentic self-expression) like Sugaya would definitely rock a skirt-over-pants style.

Or even just wear a painters' apron permanently! You don't know when you'll need to DIY some camouflage, or stain yourself any other way. The light grey would match the hair, too.

Now that I think about it, Fuwa might ditch the shoes for more average, comfy sneakers like Sugino, Kimura, and also do without the tie. It'd be a nice change to have a girl not wear it. Her socks could be easter eggs from other mangas, too?

I don't have everyone pinned down, mainly because I see them as rule-abiding students on that front (no blame on them).

Chiba, Hayami, etc. would wear their uniforms to a T, I believe, just like in canon.

Chiba is really, really glad he has the cargo pants though. His punk side could show in a couple adjustements, like ditching the blaze

Peut-être s’attendait-il à ce que Nagisa tente de l’assassiner ? La porte de la salle de classe s’ouvrit lentement. Oui, pensa Nagisa, le professeur s’attendait vraiment à une tentative d’assassinat. La porte finit par s’ouvrit complètement et Koro-sensei entra.

« Joyeux anniversaire Koro-sensei ! Crièrent les élèves. »

Les élèves de la classe 3-E entrèrent dans leur salle de classe. C’était les vacances de Noël, mais ils avaient demandé à leur professeur des cours supplémentaires pour les prochains examens qui approchaient. Ils ne voulaient tomber dans aucun piège, ni se rendre compte que le proviseur avait glissé dans leur examen des questions qu’ils n’avaient jamais vu en cours. Ils voulaient prouver à toute l’école que la classe E n’était pas la classe des épaves. Qu’eux aussi comptaient. Koro-sensei avait tout de suite accepté. Dès qu’un de ses élèves lui demandait de l’aide, il répondait toujours présent. Il était leur professeur, c’était sa raison d’être. Personne n’était au courant pour ces cours supplémentaires. Mais comme les bâtiments de la classe E étaient éloignés du reste de l’école, ils savaient qu’ils ne se feraient pas prendre.

Les élèves s’installèrent à leur place, discutant du Noël qui venait de passer. Certains l’avaient passés entre amis, d’autres avec leur famille. Tous étaient encore dans l’esprit Noël.

« Et vous Koro-sensei ? Demanda Kaede. Qu’est-ce que vous avez fait pour Noël ? »

Le professeur à l’apparence de poulpe leva la tête vers elle.

« Je n’ai rien fait.

-Comment ça ? Dit Terasaka. Vous n’avez pas fêté Noël avec des amis ou de la... »

Il se tut en se rendant compte qu’en effet, Koro-sensei ne devait pas avoir de véritable famille et que ses amis étaient des collègues de travail. Aucun de ses élèves n’y avait vraiment pensé. Après tout, ils ne connaissaient pas grand-chose de lui. Avait-il déjà eu une famille avec qui fêter Noël ? Tous le regardèrent avec tristesse. Même si leur but final était de l’assassiner, cela leur faisait de la peine que leur professeur n’ait eu personne avec qui fêter Noël.

« Allons, dit Koro-sensei. Ne faites pas cette tête. Ce n’est pas si important que ça. Cela ne me dérange pas de ne pas avoir fêté Noël. D’ailleurs, j’ai prévu d’aller assister au feu d’artifice de New-York pour la nouvelle année. »

Il ouvrit son livre pour commencer le cours et indiquer que la conversation était terminée. Mais pour Nagisa, cela était loin d’être terminer. Une idée commença à germer dans sa tête. À la pause déjeuner, quand Koro-sensei ne sera pas dans la classe, il en parlera au reste des élèves.

À la pause déjeuner, tous les élèves étaient restés dans la classe. Ils avaient attendu que Koro-sensei parte pour l’Australie pour prendre son déjeuner. C’était le moment où jamais pour Nagisa de parler de son idée.

« Koro-sensei n’a pas fêté Noël. Et malgré qu’il nous ait dit le contraire, je suis sûr que ça l’attriste.

-Qu’est-ce qu’on peut y faire, dit Terasaka. Noël est passé.

-J’avais pensé qu’on pourrait faire une fête pour lui. Peut-être pour son anniversaire. Quelqu’un sait quand c’est ? »

Ils échangèrent un regard interrogateur. Personne ne savait quand était né leur professeur.

« Il ne s’en souvient pas, dit Karma. »

Leur attention se portèrent sur lui.

« Je lui ai déjà demandé. Il m’a répondu qu’il n’en avait aucun souvenir.

-C’est vraiment triste, dit Yukiko.

-Au final, on ne sait rien de lui. »

Nagisa réfléchit à ce qu’ils pouvaient faire. Le but depuis le départ était d’assassiner Koro-sensei. Mais il restait leur professeur et il avait tant fait pour eux. C’était grâce à lui s’ils avaient repris confiance et qu’ils ne se voyaient plus comme la classe des épaves. Il voulait faire quelque chose de spécial pour lui. Pour le remercier.

« Et si on lui choisissait une date d’anniversaire, proposa Kaede. Comme ça, on pourrait lui organiser une fête. »

Tous sourirent et félicitèrent Kaede d’avoir eu cette idée. Celle-ci ne put s’empêcher de rougir.

« Pourquoi pas le 1er janvier, dit Nagisa. Ce serait parfait. »

Ses camarades acquiescèrent. C’était décidé. Il allait organiser une fête surprise pour Koro-sensei. Le jour de l’an allait bientôt arriver. Il fallait qu’ils soient discrets et qu’ils se dépêchent.

Tout était enfin prêt pour la fête d’anniversaire de Koro-sensei. La salle de classe avait été décorée. Les tables et les chaises avaient été mis dans une autre salle, des guirlandes lumineuses étaient accrochées au mur. Il y avaient aussi des ballons et l’inscription « Joyeux anniversaire Koro-sensei ! » faisait toute la longueur du tableau. Malgré qu’ils se soient fait le plus discrets possible, monsieur Karasuma les avait surpris. Mais il leur avait promis de garder de secret. Tout était prêt. Il ne manquait plus que leur professeur.

Nagisa lui avait envoyé un message lui demandant de venir en salle de classe, prétextant avoir besoin de lui pour plus d’explications sur une partie des cours qu’il n’avait pas compris. Même s’il savait que Koro-sensei trouverait cela bizarre qu’il lui demande de venir dans la soirée, il ne pouvait pas lui refuser. Peut-être s’attendait-il à ce que Nagisa tente de l’assassiner ? La porte de la salle de classe s’ouvrit lentement. Oui, pensa Nagisa, le professeur s’attendait vraiment à une tentative d’assassinat. La porte finit par s’ouvrit complètement et Koro-sensei entra.

« Joyeux anniversaire Koro-sensei ! Crièrent les élèves. »

Des confettis volèrent dans toute la pièce. La tête de Koro-sensei changea plusieurs fois de couleur, ne sachant pas ce qu’il devait ressentir. De la peur, de la joie ?

« Mais ce n’est pas mon anniversaire.

-On sait que vous ne vous souvenez pas de votre date de naissance, expliqua Nagisa. Alors on a décidé qu’aujourd’hui serait votre anniversaire. C’est pour vous remercier de tout ce que vous avez fait pour nous. »

S’il en avait été capable, Koro-sensei serait en train de pleurer. Les paroles de son élève le touchèrent plus qu’il ne l’aurait cru. Toka s’approcha de lui et lui mit un chapeau de fête multicolore sur la tête.

« C’est le moment de commencer votre fête d’anniversaire Koro-sensei.

-Mais avant ça, nous avons une surprise pour vous, dit Karma.

-Encore une surprise ? »

Karma acquiesça et toute la classe sortit du bâtiment pour se rendre dans la cour. Les élèves s’éloignèrent et demandèrent à leur professeur de rester où il était.

« Vous êtes prêt ? Demanda Karma.

-Oui. »

Karma alluma une mèche et un feu d’artifice illumina le ciel. Koro-sensei était émerveillé par ce qu’il voyait. Un feu d’artifice rien que pour lui. Soudain, l’un des feux d’artifice se dirigea vers lui, puis un deuxième et un troisième. Koro-sensei les esquiva facilement. Il rit aux éclats. Ses élèves avaient profité de sa fête d’anniversaire pour tenter de l’assassiner. Il ne pouvait pas être plus fier d’eux. Il continua de rire. Cet anniversaire restera gravé dans sa mémoire.

When Koro-sensei started to be the teacher of Class 3-E he decided to be the best teacher he can be, that is why he pays close attention and plans to have a good relationship with every single of them, try to befriend them without forgeting his role as the teacher

Koro-sensei is incredibly smart and observant (and he is proud of it) so it won't take him long for him to realice how nervous (or anxious) you tent to get sometimes, even if you don't show it much he will find out soon or later. At first Koro-sensei doesn't think much of it because all of you are teenagers and are under a lot of pressure for the school system, and not just that but you are in your third year of high school it would normal for anyone in this situation to feel anxious, but as the time pass he notice more and more hints that you feel anxious even in what could be consider normal situation

This truly worry him but before trying to talk to you about this topic he does a deeper research of the topic, wanting to make sure to know all he need before confronting you. When he does aproach to you to talk about this topic he, first of all, ask you how do you feel and what exactly makes you nervous, after confirming that what you feel is anxiety he ask you if you already are seen a profesional for help or not

Koro-sensei clarify that there is nothing bad about having a anxiety disorder (it could be generated while trying to protect yourself from something), is actually pretty common (sadly) and is completely natural for people to feel anxiety in situation that make people feel stress or even in danger, however with a anxiety disorder is something deeper but you can learn how to handle it

Koro-sensei will prepare an specially class to talk about anxiety, not just to help you indirectly but also to help everyone to learn to calm themselfs since in this assassin class all of you will face diferent situations that could bring a feeling of anxiety, and if you learn to handle that you can handle everything outside the school. He goes from explaining the feeling to completely explain the disorder and the anxiety attacks, as well to teach different techniques that help you calm down during one, breath and calm down is the key to handle anxiety!

You can open up to them about having an anxiety disorder or not, in any case they (specially your closer friends) will find out on their own, or at least notice when you are feeling anxious and are always willing to help you (at least to guide you through the technique to be able to calm down and focus)

Some of your classmates, like Kurahashi, Maehara and Fuwa, tries to help you with it in a more joking way, using jokes to help you distract, while others, like Hara, Kataoka and Isogai, are more direct and try to help you calm down

In the other hand some of them tries to help you but start panicing a little if they see you in a anxious state, like Okuda, Kimura or Sugaya, while there are others that say in a no so joking way that you have nothing to worry since they are the real danger (like Karma, Nakamura or Hazama)
