The lack of Colonel Lennox fanfiction surprises me. I'd love to see him try and redeem himself, or an AU. I guess he's too much of a rake for most people (understandably).

18+ 1v1 Rps on Discord
Hey. Sorry that I haven't been on. I have been dealing with a lot of crap and I've been in a low place. But I'm back for some roleplaying. This will include lots of strong sexual themes, some bloody violence, some bondage, strong cursing, strong romantic themes, some alcohol consumption, abusive pasts, etc.
I don't have many rules/regulations, but please make sure you follow these.
I only play ocs. I mostly play females but I can play male characters, just not as well. I usually do gxg or gxb but I can do bxb.
I am a literate person so I would prefer it if you could do at least 2-3 lines. The bigger, the better.
A lot of these characters I have past backstories that I have prewritten. If you don't like that, please don't mention it to me and not join. I am very passionate about my characters.
This is mainly a srp 1v1 scenario thing, but if you would like to do a small group, let me know.

Sanditon S2 (After watching a sum total of 1 episode)
• Yes I'm bummed TJ decided not to return, but honestly, I'm over it. The show is either going to work or it won't. But me crying over Theo won't change a damn thing.
• Full disclosure, I fucking DETEST love triangles. They are so polarising and fans end up either loving or hating a show depending on who ends up with whom.
• Colonel Francis Lennox seems congenial, attentive and charming. He also trusts Edward Denham. So yeah, he's not the most discerning of characters then.
• So who am I rooting for? Its early days, but personally give me all the deep, dark and broody. I'm a Darcy fan, a Colonel Brandon stan. I love a tortured, misunderstood hero with a complicated past. So yeah, Alexander Colbourne has piqued my interest. However, having said that, the season is young and much is still unknown about both of Charlotte's potential suitors.
• Georgiana and Charles Lockhart is giving me 'this is my S2 OTP vibes' and I'm here for it.
• I miss Lord Babbington 😭😭😭 Esther dealing with fertility issues shouldn't be done alone, absent of her husbands care and support. I REALLY hope Mark Stanley is able to come back next season. I would hate it if this couple ended up on the scrap heap. They were my personal favourite part of S1.
• Fuck Edward Denham !!!
• Yes for all the lady friendships I'm about to see this season. Plus Charlotte and the Colbourne kids!
• Alison Heywood and Captain Fraser is low-key serving enemies to lovers and I know it's going to be cute af.
Onward to Episode 2!

The original endgame love interest leaving and being replaced by two suitors is giving me major Mary’s men from Downton Abbey season 4 vibes. I wonder if Charlotte will end up with Alexander Colbourne or Colonel Francis Lennox? I feel Alexander may have an advantage since Charlotte’s sister Alison’s love interest, Captain William Carter, is also in the military. I’m just not sure they would have both sisters end up with military men, but since we know nothing about them or where the story will go, who knows. With a nine month time jump I think they will have Sidney and Eliza (offscreen obviously) be expecting, or just have given birth to, their first child. I’m guessing that by the end of season 2, or if it ends in a cliffhanger then the first episode of season 3, Charlotte will have made her choice between her two suitors and we’ll see them together as a couple during season 3.

A Battle of Wits
When Eleanor Parker returned to Sanditon, she had expected a warm welcome: the prodigal daughter, home at last.
What she had not expected was to find the man she had refused seven years ago right at her brother's side, whispering in his ear.
Francis Lennox had successfully repressed every thought of her for seven years only to meet her in a quaint little seaside town that offered neither diversion nor respite from her presence.
This time, he is determined not to let her humiliate him.
This time, she is determined not to let him fool her.
But while they whet their knives and devise their schemes, other memories of their time together come back unbidden and only serve to make matters even more complicated.

Colonel Francis Lennox deepdive
Tumblr media
As we say goodbye to Colonel Lennox, I’m looking back at the dubious legacy he leaves behind. Is the cad with a dash of honour beyond redemption, or is he a complex victim of his own flaws?
For reference, Tom Weston-Jones had an interview explaining some parts of Lennox’s character and decisions, one can read it here: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/specialfeatures/sanditon-2-interview-tom-weston-jones/
Lennox the gambling man
Gambling was very commonplace in England in the regency era, it was practically a national sport. You can’t read an Austen book without at least some older people entertaining themselves with card games, these often included small gambling on the side. Though gaming for high stakes was illegal by Austen’s day, authorities didn’t control it a lot since it was an upper class vice. It was very normal to have debts. Weston-Jones cites two books in which that question features. Gambling and the ensuing debts were very normal.
Debts for the militia (the ad-hoc, strictly local military units) were actually very common to the point that they were notorious for not paying off their debts. But the state had huge debts after the war, so regular parts of the military were also reinbursed for their expenses quite late.
Lennox is self-preserving, he’ll make sure his batallion won’t fall without funds. He doesn’t see anything malicious in the practice of gambling so to him making a gambling room is a win-win. Rich people, amongst which Tom, who portrays himself as being very wealthy can have fun & gamble at Lennox’s table while he strikes up the profits to get around. He doesn’t know Tom has a history of being bad with money, so of course he’s annoyed when Tom in his eyes is just being a bad loser. Every man has debts, Tom says he is a wealthy man, ergo, why should Lennox feel sorry for him? Offset that to how he worriedly asked Edward about his gambling in episode 1. Lennox knows Edward doesn’t have a lot of money, ergo he tries to keep him away from the gambling tables. Lennox draws the line at impoverishing an already poor man.
Sure, the people of the town complain a bit, but Lennox probably thought that he’d soon enough collect enough money to start partially repaying them.
When Tom forces him into a corner, he accepts the challenge of a game of cards like a gentleman and sticks to his promises. He shows a lot of his character flaws: he’s temperamental, a sore loser, and he first tries to manipulate people to turn a situation to his advantage. He’s an excellent tactician and takes losses very personally. So to conclude we see he has some morals, but he also tries to stay on top of every situation by all means he deems necessary and doesn’t like it when he fails.
Lennox the love man
Lucy
We don’t know a lot about Lucy. So a lot of this is speculation, but we do have some certainties.
We know Lennox loved Lucy. He probably left her because he had to return to the war (he left her early 1811 in the midst of the war). He was also incredibly shocked when Leonora asked him if he was her father. If he’d left Lucy behind knowing she was pregnant, he wouldn’t have had to ask how old Leonora was as he would have known that the child could have been his kid. If he hadn’t wanted to be a dad, he would have just said “no, I’m not”, but instead he asked her age because he wanted to know if he had a daughter. When she replies, he doesn’t deny the possibility, he just stares at Leo realizing that yes, that’s his daughter right there. So Lennox fell in love with Lucy somewhere between 1810-1811 and left her before he knew she was pregnant. By the time he was next on leave, she was probably dead already.
We know Lennox was really upset about the state he found Lucy in. He called her “lonely and abandoned”. Colbourne told Charlotte him and Lucy married very young. I’m just speculating here, but Edward Ferrars fell for Lucy Steele when they were both very young even though it was an incredible misalliance, and if Lucy hadn’t broken the engagement, he would have had to marry her. It’s possible Colbourne lived through what Edward Ferrars could avoid. Lucy and her sister loved dancing and fancy London society while Colbourne was introverted and rather stayed home, they clearly didn’t fit. Lennox, meanwhile, is an exciting adventurous military man who is charming and extraverted. It’s easy to see how Lucy, who lacked warmth and passion and was stuck with a dutiful, shy and insecure husband, would fall for him. Lennox clearly fell in love with Lucy too, and spent a lot of time with an unhappily wedded woman trying to cheer her up, and eventually ending up in a relationship with her. He must have HATED Colbourne, first for making Lucy unhappy, and secondly because as long as Colbourne lived, Lennox could never truly be with the woman he’d fallen in love with. At the same time I recognize Colbourne blamed Lennox for abusing the weakness and poor mental state of Lucy. We’ll never know the truth, but it’s clear that both men at least admit Lucy was already in a bad state before she met Lennox. As to whether Lennox deliberately used her mental state to seduce her, or whether he fell for her and wanted to make her happy, that we don’t know, but we know his affection was genuine.
And then duty called and he had to leave the woman he loved, but who could never be his, behind. Next thing Lennox knew she was dead. Gotta leave a scar, which we see as he’s still pissed when Sanditon starts.
So as far as far as his capacity of love and care goes, we know he cared a lot about Lucy. He’s not unfeeling.
Charlotte
We don’t need to question Lennox’s plans. He tells us at the start of the season: he wants to find a wife and start a family as he hadn’t had the pleasure before.
He’s fascinated by Charlotte. He likes her enterprising spirit, her banter and her wit. And if we want to be creepy: Charlotte has dark hair and dark eyes, as does Augusta whom we’re told looks like Lucy and her sister. So perhaps he also has a type in the looks department. He persues Charlotte, he calls on her, is transparant about his attentions, and approves of her doing what she wants with her life. Charlotte says she struggles with her charges? Sure, he’ll help her device a plan. Charlotte is in contact with Colbourne, he tells her what he knows, namely that he made a woman very unhappy in the past. In his eyes Charlotte also returns the favour to him. When everyone is afraid of the balloon, Charlotte takes the risk, defying gender bias, showing a sense of adventure, and helping him. They never have a bad talk until she refuses him, there weren’t any real red flags, especially when taking into account that Lennox doesn’t know what an enthusiastically interested Charlotte looks like.
Sure, she says she won’t marry, but Lennox has been in love with a woman who couldn’t marry him before, for him Charlotte not wanting to marry is a minor issue to being in love with a woman actually being married. Lennox is pretty sure it’s a “waiting around for the right man” kind of situation as he rightfully assumes no one chooses to be a governess forever. It’s an awful job which comes with a lot of social exclusion and loneliness.
Enter Colbourne. Lennox doesn’t want history repeating itself, so he wants to keep him away. He reminds Colbourne of the damage he’s done and tries to crawl under his skin. Meanwhile, our army man who’s bad at losing games, quickly wants to win the game. He guards his goal/ball Charlotte by letting her do the final shot of the archery contest in his name. It manages to show everyone his interest and relationship in Charlotte, and it shows he believes she can do anything she wants even if it’s a “manly” thing. Lennox knows Charlotte isn’t ready yet, but when Colbourne arrives at the ball and dances with Charlotte, Lennox feels he has to rush things to prevent Charlotte from getting invested in the man he hates (see the interview with Weston-Jones). Big mistake, however. Charlotte is already more attached to Colbourne, and Lennox forcing his attentions on her kills all good vibes that were between them. Charlotte righteously lashes out, and Lennox stops her and threatens her as he’s a bad loser. He got refused and knows she might be falling for the man who hurt his beloved. Lennox has an ego and he hates to lose. That’s a good attitude in battle to become a better soldier, but a bad one in love. So once again, he’s capable of love, but his love is influenced by past hurt, jealousy and ego.
Daddy
Lennnox didn't ever know Lucy was pregnant. When he discovers Leonora is his daughter he realizes two things at once 1) he does have a family 2) he left the MARRIED woman he loved behind WHILE PREGNANT. For years, he’d blamed Colbourne for Lucy’s death, but in that instant he must have realized that leaving a married woman behind with a bastard must have also been awful for Lucy’s mental state. Imagine that guilt: the guilt of never having known you had a child and she appears before you after nine years, and you fucked up her mom (Insert TikTok quote “Am I the villain? I don’t think I’m the villain, maybe I am”). That’s a lot to process.
Leo then asks him if he’s her father, and he has to decide then and there whether CAN be her father.
While I think he's clearly still a bit shaken, he can see the facts. If he tells Leo she's his daughter, then they're in one mess of a situation. He can't claim her paternity without making her a poor bastard out of wedlock. It would also tarnish her name while she's a very respectable if quirky wealthy heiress right now. And if he doesn't claim patternity but does admit to her he's her father, she'll grow up knowing she's illegitimate and her relationship with her sole parental figure (Colbourne) will be ruined. Leo will end up probably hating Lennox for having made her mother cheat on who she sees as her father figure. And what will Lennox do as her father? He's a soldier, he travels around, his army is lacking funds... He can't be there for Leo. Telling her the truth would only hurt her and nothing good could come of it. Telling her would just be for his own selfish desire to get to know his daughter and have something of him and Lucy.
Meanwhile, he knows Colbourne kept Leo's patternity quiet and raised her as his own, giving her all the money and education his wealth could afford her. So Lennox lies to Leo, knowing she's way better off with Colbourne as a father. It's him finally putting another above his own wellbeing, but of course he is a sore loser and now Colbourne gets to have his daughter and the woman he loves (twice). So he can't help but manipulate Colbourne into doubting he can bring Charlotte happiness. He knew by reminding Colbourne he made Lucy unhappy that it would make him think twice about Charlotte. Lennox probably thought; "You can have my daughter, but you’ll have to work damned hard to not fuck it up."
Final conclusion: Lennox can be selfless, but he really really doesn’t like it.
Lennox the commander
Lennox is not a bad person within his ranks.
He’s been serving since at least 1810 (Sanditon season 2 takes place in 1820 and Leonora was born 9 years ago, which is October 1811, meaning Lennox created her with lucy in January and by that point he was already a captain). He served in many battles, like Waterloo, and wears a medal for it. He also got a colonel title, which sometimes means nothing, but in his case I think it does. He makes time for his men, like immediately giving Carter an audience when he asks for it and showing worry about Edward’s gambling behaviour.
He’s mean to Edward at the end, but that’s only after he was already dealt 3 devastating blows: discovering he has a child and having to give her up; discovering he left the love of his life behind whilst pregnant and having to pay a lot of debts. Edward not being able to pay his commission is another loss that they and he won’t have that anymore, it’s the drop that makes the bucket overflow.
Conclusion
Lennox is an excellent example of a (dark) grey character. You can see he’s doing what he thinks is right, but has little scrupules getting his hands dirty to achieve his goals. He wants to love, but he’s jealous, vengeful, hurt and competitive and it damages the relationships he’s trying to establish.
And so he ends up travelling to India, having played the game to win, but ending up losing instead.
