The other one was getting long

“What do your gorgeous baby blues see?”
Obi-Wan lets his middle finger speak, earning a chuckle from Quin. “Target, two clicks east,” he signs quick and efficient with one hand. Cody has been showing him the shortcut hand signals the clones have adapted from military and basic sign language. Obi-Wan has, in turn, shown him what one can do with the other hand not occupied with signing.
It has been rather eye opening, over all, how the clones deal with their lot in life.
Their cruel, drenched in suffering life, Obi-Wan thinks, and the leather of his glove squeaks with how hard he’s gripping the edge of the roof.
“Credit for your thoughts.”
Obi-Wan shakes himself out his own mind, focuses back on their mission. “When we’re back on Coruscant,” he signs, is pleased with Quin raising curious brows, “I want you to ask Commander Fox if he’s inclined to share tea with you.”
A pebble floats up from the ground and nails Obi-Wan in the side of his head. “I don’t need you to be my wingman.”
“You need someone with more flirting expertise than I can possibly provide to be your wingman, my friend.” The empty huff of a chuckle escapes him when Quin turns into a cloud of indignation. “I want you to shake him for information. Something isn’t right.”
“Target’s moving, just like planned,” Quin murmurs, keen eyes following the spice dealer. “Can’t you fuck your own Commander for intel? I heard he’s got a great ass from all the droid kicking.”
“He’s very stubborn,” he replies, fiddling the data pad out of his satchel. “Commander Fox is,” he hesitates, which isn’t a planned move, but it’s got Quin’s full attention now, “closer to a source I want to tap.”
And he’s lost Quin’s attention just like that. “Could you stop spinning conspiracies about the Chancellor? He’s a kind old man, beloved by all, bla bla.”
“He’s a politician. And I still don’t know what happened to Anakin—“ Fierce, sweet boy, could definitely hurt a fly. Obi-Wan had been gone for a month and he had come back to Ani tossed and turned by dark falsehoods.
“Depa and the mind healers have done a good job with that kid.”
Still. Coming back to Coruscant after long stretches is like being slowly sniffed out in the Force. His jaw aches like it hasn’t in a decade. “Talk with Fox, please.”
Quin sighs, rolls his neck, and flicks his chin at their target. “Come on, a spice lab is waiting for us.”
Together they step over the ledge, wind and gravity grabbing at them for twenty stories before the Force catches them.

SoundStarShock Headcanons
Sooo - I've seen many people on Twitter / X shipping Starscream, Soundwave and Shockwave thanks to Transformers One. Like - look at those 3. Appearing together? Standing together? And at the end? I need no more explanations - nothing, nada, rien.
(´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)

Starscream snuggles from time to time his helm against Soundwave's or Shockwave's - and said action has been rubbed (no pun intented) on both mechs too.
Imagine how both Sound and Shock were confused by that, but Thundercracker and Skywarp explained to them that was quite common among seekers.
(Now looking at it... TC & Soundwave = blue. SW & Shockwave = purple. Do you see what I am seeing?) Moving on.
Soundwave would gently knock his forehelm with either bots.
They def have inside jokes. And laugh togehter... menacingly.
They gossip - that ain't a headcanon, is canon.
Starscream's love language is Words of affirmation, Soundwave's is Physical touch and Shockwave's is Quality time. Make this either fluffy or toxic, anything works with these three babygirls.
Shockwave and Starscream are yappers, Soundwave is happy to listen.
The are quite protective of each other - Starscream being the sole one to be too aggressive-loud, while the two Waves are deadly silent.
Can you imagine how things would play whoever was the first one to propose the idea of being a poly relationship? Like - Imagine the potential for each bot.
( •̀ ω •́ )✧
Starscream fell first? Constantly in denial - "Ugh, feelings." - and was more irritating than he was already. But would from time to time praise the other two mechs, to then deny he did it. And in the end, he asked out demanded both mechs to become his sparkmates. "Only you two have proven to be worthy to become my sparkmates - a-and... ugh, the leader would be nothing without his Second and Third in command!" ... strangely that moved Shockwave's and Soundwave's sparks.
Soundwave fell first? Attentive, and would always try to be close or have minimun physical contact with either mech. One servo on Shockwave's shoulder, leaning by Starscream's side. You name it. He would have fell first for Shockwave, then Starscream - yes, maybe the 1st one is a tad off about his scientific research even at harsh times and Starscream can be quite flawed as a leader, but Shockwave showed passion, and Starscream tried to keep his people safe. "Soundwave: request. Starscream and Shockwave: spark bond with Soundwave."
Shockwave fell first? Alright, this is interesting. He would definitely evaluate the other two mechs, trying to be logical to deem worth the shot or to not waste his own time. And can see Shockwave approach both mechs directly to tell them he wants to test and hypothesis, therefore he needed the three of them to become romantically involved. And he was ready to just take the data he needed and step back... buuut he feels complete with them. It would be illogical to step back from his sparkmates now.
(❁´◡`❁)
Starscream loves to be right in the middle - wants the attention!
Find comfort among themselves - after losing so many things thanks to that bitch Sentinel Prime, they mourn and hold each other when they are all alone.
Imagine Soundwave playing soft tunes to either mech when they are alone - lofi beats trouple.
Shockwave sudden outburts of anger (take for example about Bee unable to not talk) make Sound and Star try to not laugh.
The three then welcomed Megatron into the pack but then divorced him whaaat
(o゚v゚)ノVhaos out!

I don't know if you're taking asks rn I saw ur post about the asteroid Fan I was wondering if you could do the same about the asteroid actor (12238) it'd be really cool to know more about this asteroid thank you😊
Asteroid Actor (12238): Understanding Its Signs and Houses
Navigation: ੈ♡˳Masterlist >
ੈ♡˳Askbox ੈ♡˳Sources
₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ About the Asteroid: The Asteroid Actor is more complex than it initially appears. Simply relying on the name and mythology of a celestial body is not sufficient. If that were the case, Uranus would have a completely different meaning. Based on my research, Actor does not represent what you, anon, might expect. The name Actor was not chosen because of a profession. “Asteroid 12238 Actor, a Jupiter Trojan, was discovered on December 17, 1987, by Eric W. Elst and Guido Pizarro at La Silla Observatory near Pedernales, Coquimbo, Chile”. It was named Actor to represent a person called Actor, a common name in ancient Greece. However, Actor is a COMMON NAME , and there are different theories regarding its origin. Some say it was named after the king of Phthia, while others think it was named after the father of Cteatos and Eurytos. Therefore, its meaning is not definitive. Combining the available data and my own observations, I have come to the conclusion that the Asteroid Actor is not solely about performance in TV or theater. In my conclusion it shows ability to adapt, assume different roles, and navigate different situations in life, to see with persona you normally need to be (sign) in an specific place (house), or else.. you break.
₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Sources and Inspirations:As I mentioned in "About the Asteroid," I used the post by @a-d-nox and Mark as my sources. These two individuals have different perspectives and employ distinct methods to derive meaning. I believe this is what astrology is all about—diverse viewpoints and interpretations. Remember, the discovery of Ceres predates that of Pluto, and when Pluto was discovered, it required discussion and analysis, until today we don't have so much data about Pluto and even less about Ceres. Similarly, we need to engage in these processes with the asteroids and astrology in general. Even if there are mistakes, it serves as a starting point. Also, the image template in from minikyuns on deviantart.

Bayverse part 1 2 3
"Y'know what I'd like? Some of those floatin' crystals I used ta see in those gardens in Praxia, they were beautiful."
"Yes, they were."
"Not as beautiful as you, my darlin' hunter." Laughter fills the small office that the SIC and 3IC of the Autobot army share at the bashful lowering of Prowl's doorwings, the tactician unsure of how to respond. "Simply beautiful."
They hadn't known each other for long, Prowl having been promoted recently after the former 3IC had been killed in the field, but it had only taken a glance. Jazz was enraptured by the Praxian when he introduced himself, his entire stance stiff at not having met his fellow command staff before his hurried promotion, but he was clearly trying his best to make a good first impression. When it was Jazz's turn to greet the new officer and give him the details about his spec op's branch, the saboteur kept his body language relaxed as he stood to chat with Prowl, pleased when the hiked-up doorwings relaxed a fraction of an inch when he shook the mechs servo.
"It's my pleasure meetin' ya Prowler."
"My designation is Prowl, but likewise, Lieutenant Jazz."
The two were almost inseparable after that, boundless energy orbiting around the very definition of utter control in a dance only they could see. It surprised none of their close confidants when they merged sparks not long after they met, completing each other in a way that had only felt right. It had been agony to part when Optimus requested Jazz join his team searching for the Allspark, but they had made a promise on the launchpad that nothing would stop them from reuniting.
"I'll be waitin' sweetspark, I promise on my spark."
"I will hold you to that Jazz."
They had one last kiss before Jazz and the others were gone, Prowl watching his bonded trail further and further away from Cybertron until he was gone. The team was still gone when those on Cybertron had to evacuate the dead planet, groups from both factions fleeing into the void of space towards an unknown destination, leaving their once beautiful planet that had been reduced to nothing but a dead husk. Friends, family, and lovers were all split in the panic, and despite all of that, many kept hoping that Optimus would find the Allspark, find a way to fix their home, or find one they could call their own somewhere else in the vastness of the universe. Prowl didn't have to ask the two that ended up with him where they would go, and the route that he had helped Optimus create for him and his crew so long ago was still burned into his processor.
That is where they would go.
---
When Jazz had to leave Cybertron behind, he didn't think about his home Polyhex, the city long since razed to the ground. He didn't think of Stanix, where he'd first met Mirage and took the noble no one wanted to give a chance under his wing, the first of many spies he would eventually come to lead. He didn't think of Praxia, the city where he spent a jour with emergency responders combing for survivors, only finding twelve survivors of a city that had housed millions.
He thinks of Prowl, the Praxian he left behind to bring their salvation home.
He thinks of what Prowl would like of Earth when he's absorbing information from this strange internet, knowing his tactician had always adored the gardens scattered across Cybertron. He sets aside data packet after data packet of things he thinks Prowl would like to go over, experience as if he'd been there the moment Jazz and the team had landed.
He thinks of Prowl and the love in his optics when Megatron grabs him, and Jazz whispers his name as his body is ripped apart, setting his spark free and into the Well of All Sparks.
---
They were gliding through a beautiful nebula when something stutters, the faint echo of a feeling of uncertainty-determination-fear flashing through his spark in the span of an optic shutter. Prowl didn't have a chance to fully register the emotion before the universe suddenly ceased to exist.
There were no words to describe the white-hot agony when the bond he created with Jazz all those years ago snapped.
Prowl didn't realize he'd even transformed when his arms were yanked back from his chest plating, the tips of his claws stained with his own energon at his fervor at trying to claw at his spark.
He was trying to rip it out and end the pain.
Screams that would have shattered audials were swallowed by the silence of space, his spark reaching out over and over for the other half that only led to a suffocating emptiness.
It was wrongwrongwrongwrongwrongwherewashewherewasJazz
Prowl could not count the time lost to madness, his HUD overflowing with warnings, the first thing he could truly focus on. His vocalizer had shorted out with screams he couldn't remember uttering, and his spark chamber scratched, but thankfully, nothing that couldn't be healed by his repair protocols. Bluestreak was holding him from behind when Prowl onlined his optics, Perceptor in front of him trying to patch up one of his arms, the claw marks dangerously close to his main energon line telling the story his processor sought. The scientist doesn't stop his work as Prowl drags himself into some sort of coherent awareness, Bluestreak's hold on him the only thing stopping Prowl from doing something stupid like seek out the nearest sun. Oh sweet Primus, it was so damned tempting, but in his spark he knew it was the wrong call.
He promised Jazz they'd see each other again, and Prowl was never one to break a promise.
Now, he stood over the frame of his bonded, trying so hard to find that will to continue on when suddenly, the room was engulfed with light.
---

yes, chatgpt and midjourney really are AI
it's funny how you see people going "ugh chatgpt isn't Real AI, everyone knows AI is commander data from star trek" and then you see this article about facade that refers to the characters' "AI system", or this paper the developers wrote about the language they used to code the characters published in Working notes of Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Entertainment, because "artificial intelligence" in the actual field has always had a very broad definition. and of course in the games industry in general, any way of controlling an agent is called "AI"; even "run directly at the player, ignoring any obstacles in the way" counts as "enemy AI"! when i took a course on AI in college in 20[mumble] from someone influential in the field studying support vector machines and neural networks and alpha-beta, well before the modern AI hype, there was no "well of course we don't have Real AI"; everything we did in that class fell well within what we considered AI to be.
the idea that AI can only refer to human-equivalent behavior doesn't serve any useful purpose and is completely out of line with the history of the field itself, and ted chiang's proposal to call it "applied statistics" is not only pointless but feeds into the modern hype that confuses ML (which refers to a specific subset of AI in general that has proven to be very very effective recently) with AI as a whole: rule-based systems such as most video game AI has zero statistical grounding, and calling it "applied statistics" would be even more misleading!

OC Meme - Adrian Shepard
Nobody asked for this, but y'all are getting it anyway because I saw @omniblades-and-stars & @stormikins do this and it looked fun, so!
(By @valkblue & @eluvisen respectively!)
GENERAL
Name: Adrian Olivier Shepard
Alias(es): Addy (from her family), and ofc the usuals via Alliance/Normandy crews (Shep/Shepard/Commander)
Gender: That's something to think about in peacetime 🫠 Just kind of runs with whatever others perceive; defaults to she/her pronouns. (Adrian's somewhere in the transmasculine range, and did pursue some some body modification during college - but all of that just dropped the fuck off after Akuze & then… like. -gestures @ everything that happens + Lazarus undoing a few things & she didn't intend on living long enough for it to matter any more-)
Age: 28 - 32, depending on game. (Although she's also had the fun questions, post-Lazarus, about how exactly to quantify that...)
Place of Birth: SSV Toronto, during a stint in the Exodus cluster.
Spoken Languages: English, smatterings of Quebecois French, Spanish & Russian, surprising fluency in Galactic Standard (aka the ever-evolving pidgin of Citadel space).
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual with very limited instances of romantic interest.
Occupation: Commander in the Alliance Navy (if we want to get really technical: a special operations saboteur/data gatherer - she wanted to be a medic or get into diplomatic relations, but like hell anyone was letting a biotic stay on the sidelines entirely)/Citadel Spectre.
FAVORITE
Color: Indigo blue
Entertainment: Music, books - not all that big on shows/movies, with the notable exception of a couple medical dramas.
Pastime: Swimming, upgrading/hacking omni-tools, poetry memorization/recitation (all-time fave/longest she can do from memory is The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock), model ship building, galactic politics, collecting rock & mineral samples from various planets she's been to, photography.
Food: Toss-up between Blast-Oh’s and seaquats (nickname for a Kajhe-native spiny pink & white ocean fruit, size & shape is similar to a kumquat. Taste is vaguely briny, then very sweet).
Drink: Masala chai.
Books: The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the collected works of Edgar Allen Poe (The Black Cat is her favorite story of his, Annabelle Lee is her favorite poem), For She Is The Krogan Queen: The Legacy of Shiagur.
HAVE THEY
Passed University: Went through & passed an Alliance military college - majored in cybersecurity, though she still took a few classes relating to paramedicine.
Had Sex: Yes
Had Sex in Public: Not yet.
Gotten Tattoos: Got a stylized thresher maw tattoo after Akuze - the body segments were done using the names of the lost unit; she was /not/ happy to see it gone after waking up in the lab.
Gotten Piercings: No
Had a Broken Heart: The better question is if it's ever not been kinda broken, tbh. There's a lot of disillusionment & heartache as she grows up & starts her career - she moves around a lot, so getting attached to anyone will go and hurt (and keeping herself distant hurt just as much, just in different ways). Her parents are both career military - one ground and one medical, she's always surrounded by talk of loss and death; not to mention the just... slow motion trainwreck that is their relationship. She loses her unit, loses the man she was just falling in love with, sees humanity and the galaxy at large pushed to the brink...
And we uh. We're just not going to talk about how she reacts, in the canon!verse, to losing Thane, Mordin & Legion.
Been in Love: Yes - there's a couple probable cases earlier in her life (notably Kaiden Alenko), but Thane's the first person she can definitively say she's fallen in love with.
ARE THEY
A cuddler: Y'know how after being malnourished for long enough, someone has to start so very slowly to be able to eat again? Yeah, Adrian /was/ a cuddler, but it takes a long time to get back there.
Scared easily:

She is so very scared. So very much of the time. There's so many people depending on her and so many bad things that can, will, and have happened if she fucks up, and her fear of doing that again is what keeps her going. Totally sustainable, right?
Jealous easily: Nah.
Trustworthy: Mostly - but she's pragmatically minded enough that she is willing to use what she knows to her advantage, if the situation calls for it. When it comes to the battlefield though, oh god yes. Ever since Akuze - she'll be first in and last out, no matter what, as long as she has any say in the situation.
FAMILY
Siblings: Yes, though they show up… way later in her life lmao. Her parents divorce, dad gets together with a turian doctor, & they adopt a couple kids . Due to Shenanigans involving said dad pretty much totally changing his first and last name, said kids don't quite realize their new big sibling is That Commander Shepard until she shows up for the holidays. She also considers Grunt something of a little brother.
Parents: Alive and (relatively) well, all throughout the series - in the standard canon, they actually far outlive her.
Hannah Shepard was from a career military family, while Adrian Alexander Bishop was a foster kid who needed a med degree. They were both in the RMC at Kingston when the Prothean data cache was uncovered and joined the Alliance together as soon as humanly possible, honored to be among the first of humanity to explore the stars, and eager to leave what legacy they can.
Their marriage is a fucking disaster and only held up as long as it did because Hannah was often gone for quite a while on postings - they're functionally separated by the time Adrian's in high school; divorced not long after Hannah's actions on Torfan.
Children: Never intended on having kids in any capacity, but she does wind up a step-parent to Kolyat. (For the first couple years while everyone's adjusting to things, it's fucking hilarious to see just how deeply uncomfortable they both get when reminded of this fact.)
Pets: Fairly successful at keeping fish. (Also has an extensive menagerie of pet rocks).

SQL Fundamentals #1: SQL Data Definition
Last year in college , I had the opportunity to dive deep into SQL. The course was made even more exciting by an amazing instructor . Fast forward to today, and I regularly use SQL in my backend development work with PHP. Today, I felt the need to refresh my SQL knowledge a bit, and that's why I've put together three posts aimed at helping beginners grasp the fundamentals of SQL.
Understanding Relational Databases
Let's Begin with the Basics: What Is a Database?
Simply put, a database is like a digital warehouse where you store large amounts of data. When you work on projects that involve data, you need a place to keep that data organized and accessible, and that's where databases come into play.
Exploring Different Types of Databases
When it comes to databases, there are two primary types to consider: relational and non-relational.
Relational Databases: Structured Like Tables
Think of a relational database as a collection of neatly organized tables, somewhat like rows and columns in an Excel spreadsheet. Each table represents a specific type of information, and these tables are interconnected through shared attributes. It's similar to a well-organized library catalog where you can find books by author, title, or genre.
Key Points:
Tables with rows and columns.
Data is neatly structured, much like a library catalog.
You use a structured query language (SQL) to interact with it.
Ideal for handling structured data with complex relationships.
Non-Relational Databases: Flexibility in Containers
Now, imagine a non-relational database as a collection of flexible containers, more like bins or boxes. Each container holds data, but they don't have to adhere to a fixed format. It's like managing a diverse collection of items in various boxes without strict rules. This flexibility is incredibly useful when dealing with unstructured or rapidly changing data, like social media posts or sensor readings.
Key Points:
Data can be stored in diverse formats.
There's no rigid structure; adaptability is the name of the game.
Non-relational databases (often called NoSQL databases) are commonly used.
Ideal for handling unstructured or dynamic data.
Now, Let's Dive into SQL:
SQL is a :
Data Definition language ( what todays post is all about )
Data Manipulation language
Data Query language
Task: Building and Interacting with a Bookstore Database
Setting Up the Database
Our first step in creating a bookstore database is to establish it. You can achieve this with a straightforward SQL command:
CREATE DATABASE bookstoreDB;
SQL Data Definition
As the name suggests, this step is all about defining your tables. By the end of this phase, your database and the tables within it are created and ready for action.
1 - Introducing the 'Books' Table
A bookstore is all about its collection of books, so our 'bookstoreDB' needs a place to store them. We'll call this place the 'books' table. Here's how you create it:
CREATE TABLE books ( -- Don't worry, we'll fill this in soon! );
Now, each book has its own set of unique details, including titles, authors, genres, publication years, and prices. These details will become the columns in our 'books' table, ensuring that every book can be fully described.
Now that we have the plan, let's create our 'books' table with all these attributes:
CREATE TABLE books ( title VARCHAR(40), author VARCHAR(40), genre VARCHAR(40), publishedYear DATE, price INT(10) );
With this structure in place, our bookstore database is ready to house a world of books.
2 - Making Changes to the Table
Sometimes, you might need to modify a table you've created in your database. Whether it's correcting an error during table creation, renaming the table, or adding/removing columns, these changes are made using the 'ALTER TABLE' command.
For instance, if you want to rename your 'books' table:
ALTER TABLE books RENAME TO books_table;
If you want to add a new column:
ALTER TABLE books ADD COLUMN description VARCHAR(100);
Or, if you need to delete a column:
ALTER TABLE books DROP COLUMN title;
3 - Dropping the Table
Finally, if you ever want to remove a table you've created in your database, you can do so using the 'DROP TABLE' command:
DROP TABLE books;
To keep this post concise, our next post will delve into the second step, which involves data manipulation. Once our bookstore database is up and running with its tables, we'll explore how to modify and enrich it with new information and data. Stay tuned ...

The Only One - Part 7: Immoral Comfort
Welp...Part 7, here we are. This is the part I started way before I even wrote Part 1, because I was in a Mood™. I originally thought this was going to be a 3 part story, but it looks like it's gonna be something closer to 12. Tbh, I didn't expect anyone to be interested in this fic because it was such a niche, back-of-the-brain thought. So, thank you to everyone who's made it this far with me and taken the time to leave comments!
I know it's been forever since I updated this, but I hope there are at least a few people who are still interested. I had a very specific way that I wanted things to happen in this chapter and I was being a little too picky about the details, so my apologies for the delay! Nearly a month passed from that long, odd day when I met Keevan and his men. I hated having to conceal part of my motives from Weyoun, but I didn’t have much of a choice. There was no way in hell I’d sit idly by while the Changelings took over my home. Major Kira, Odo, and a few others had begun a small resistance cell aboard the station, and so that they wouldn’t jeopardize my mission or I theirs, Kira had ordered me not to attend meetings. I was to keep my ears open and report to her as usual. She was allowing me to help but only in minor ways. Yes, it was important to cause chaos for the Dominion while they were occupying the station, but a position of influence and confidence like I currently held was insanely important for the intelligence gathering task that Starfleet had given me. Hell, I didn’t even know who all the members were.
That was definitely for the best. With the intimacy of the connection that Weyoun and I shared, my lack of knowledge kept myself and the rest of the resistance members safe. I’d have to be content helping in my own little way. Thus far, Dukat trusted me almost as much as Weyoun did, and Damar was slowly coming around to the belief that I wasn’t his enemy. All I had to do now was keep it up and find a way to contact Starfleet Command. Discreetly.
Seated beside each other one evening, Weyoun and I worked on our respective reports. I wasn’t particularly curious about the file he was reading until he picked up a stylus and wrote something. It was an odd group of symbols and marks that I’d never seen before. Without much thought about how rude it probably was, I tilted my head and watched how fluidly his fingers drew the stylus across the data PADD.
“What is that?” I asked quietly, and Weyoun gave me a perplexed look.
“A report about troop movements...?”
“Oh, not the report, I mean this,” I said pointing to the symbols he’d drawn out beneath the final paragraph. A look of understanding washed over him, and he gave me a small smile.
“That is my signature,” he answered simply, and I felt my eyes widen. “Have you not seen Dominionese written out before?”
“I’ve barely heard Dominionese, much less seen it. Is that really your name?” I asked unable to keep the wonder from my voice. I examined the markings a bit more carefully, wondering what each meant in order to form a name as precious as his.
Weyoun set the data PADD aside, picked up an empty one, and wrote the symbols a little neater this time. I watched the way his stylus glided over the PADD’s surface in practiced, fluid movements. When he was finished, he tilted the screen toward me to show me his handiwork, and I couldn’t stop a smile from splitting my lips. The more I looked at the symbols, the harder it became to shake the feeling that I’d seen something like them before.
The pendant! I pulled it out from beneath the collar of my uniform and sure enough, the symbols were similar. The engravings were in Dominionese.
“Weyoun, the pendant you gave me...what does it say?”
“Would you like me to tell you, or would you like me to teach you to read it yourself?” He asked with a twinkle in his eyes, and I felt myself perk up at the implication.
“Would you? I-I mean, are you willing to teach me? I know you’re busy with the station and the war, so I understand if you don’t have the time–” He cut me off with a quick kiss and set the PADD aside as he took my hands in his.
“My dear, I would be honored to teach you the language of your people,” Weyoun murmured. “I’m sure you’ll take to it quite easily. You’ve always been a fast learner, at least from what I’ve seen.”
‘My people.’ Both of us knew they weren’t anything of the sort after what they’d done, but I still appreciated his sentiment. Besides, the hope that he held about a potential reconciliation between myself and the Changelings, while utterly futile, was also incredibly sweet. After all that he'd been through, the fact that he still had hope was just a testament to the strength that the Founders chose not to see in their Vorta followers.
Giving his hands a gentle squeeze, I looked up at the gorgeous purple-eyed being on my sofa. How in the stars did I get so lucky?
Purple blush spread quickly across his cheeks, and Weyoun let out a shy little laugh. Right, the feelings. It had become more natural over the duration of our relationship for us to share our emotions through the strange telepathic connection we'd been granted, but there were still moments where it caught one or both of us off guard.
"As much as I wish I could keep you all to myself tonight and demonstrate exactly how much I adore you, didn't you say you were meeting a friend tonight?" His question pulled me from my reverie, and I blinked in comprehension.
“Computer, what time is it?”
“The time is eighteen-thirty hours,” it responded, and I got to my feet. Shit, he was right, and I was going to be late at this rate.
“Meeting Damar again?” Weyoun asked as he stood, too, and grasped my waist lightly. When I nodded my head, he gave me a gentle smile. “I’m so glad you’re making more friends. I know you were already acquainted with some of the Bajoran officers, but knowing that Keevan and Damar along with some of their officers have become close to you...I’m overjoyed! To tell you the truth, I thought you might feel isolated here given the personnel changes. I-I thought...you might regret staying.”
Shrugging my shoulders, I wrapped my arms around the Vorta’s neck.
“Well, I still feel a little out of place at times, but there are a few people here who’ve been kind to me," I murmured placing a gentle kiss on the tip of his nose. "For the record, you make staying here worth it. As long as I have you, I won't regret leaving Starfleet."
I knew this was only temporary - that as soon as the Federation regained control of the station I'd be back to being a Starfleet officer - but I was going to make the most of this while I could. Sure, I still had my mission and a very important job to do, but I wasn't about to waste my opportunity to soak in Weyoun's presence while I could.
A beautiful, joyful smile stretched his lips, and he pressed his forehead lightly against mine.
"Good, because running this station and protecting Bajor for the Dominion...it would be mind-numbingly dull without you, my dear." That brought a smile to my own lips, but probably for different reasons than he would've anticipated. The Founders would likely have blown a gasket hearing that one of their Vorta toys was bored with the job they'd been created to perform. If that wasn't proof that the Vorta were capable of being so much more than the Changelings thought, I didn't know what was. "Don't be late, now. I'll be here when you get back."
I nodded my head quietly and gave him a tender, parting kiss before making my way toward Quark's.
The Bajoran station was humming with the partially-exhausted crowds that naturally accompanied the end of a shift. Used to the tired throng of people either going for a meal or heading back to their quarters, I used a few of the back corridors - less-traveled areas, of course - to make up some time.
Rather quickly, I found myself slipping into the doorway to the Ferengi's bar and zeroing in on the seat that was held for me out of habit by Dukat's right hand man. Without preamble, I plopped myself on the padded stool and gave a polite nod to the Cardassian in question.
"I was wondering when you'd get here. Usually you're early," Damar said as he brought his glass of kanar to his lips. He seemed in unusually high spirits tonight. Either something minor and gossip-worthy had happened, or I should be very concerned about the state of the war.
"There was a lot of foot traffic tonight. Apparently everyone decided this was the night to be in my way," I said with a dismissive giggle. Quark caught my eye and nodded in acknowledgement. "You look like the cat that got the cream, Glinn. What's got you in such a good mood?"
The Ferengi bartender set my drink in front of me with a wink - I knew for a fact that he flirted with all the patrons who wouldn't kill him in the hopes that he'd get a bigger tip - but before he could leave, Damar's hand landed on his forearm.
"Anything the Lieutenant drinks tonight is on me. This is a celebration," the Glinn said with a smug smirk. Looking at him in surprise, I lifted my glass of kanar in salute.
"Why, thank you, Glinn. If I may ask, what's the occasion?" He tapped his glass against mine, and after we both took a generous swallow - clearly not his first of such this evening - he turned to face me on his stool.
"My impending promotion!" He said puffing up his armor-covered chest.
Uh oh.
"Wait a minute," Quark cut in as he polished a glass, "you started a fight in my bar and they're making you a Gul? What kind of way is that to run an army?"
Weyoun had mentioned the fight only a couple of days before. Apparently, it had been between Cardassian officers and Jem'Hadar soldiers. Quark's concern was completely valid. How the hell did that track?
"Dukat wasn't happy about what happened," Damar started refilling his glass and topping mine off, even though I'd only taken a single sip. "I had to find a way to make it up to him."
"I hope it was something big," Quark chimed in.
"Must've been a hell of a blowjob," I teased, and the tipsy Cardassian let out a raucous laugh.
"Nothing so personal. Let's just say it will change the course of history," he said before draining his glass once more. Quark's eyes met mine. This reeked of trouble.
"As a businessman," the Ferengi started, refilling the Glinn's glass himself, "I'm very interested in the course of history. This one's on me."
Damar accepted the drink with a nod and a raised glass.
"That's very kind of you, Quark, but I can't talk about it." Down the hatch went that drink, and I sipped slowly at mine as I formed a plan. Quark looked over at me, and sighed as he grabbed a third glass.
"Of course, I understand. Have another," he offered, refilling Damar's drink, topping up mine, and pouring one for himself. I'd never imbibed heavily before, but there was a first time for everything.

Making our way to Kira's quarters while intoxicated was more difficult that I'd anticipated. Not only did I have to keep myself upright, but I had to try and steady Quark as well. The dirty bastard's hand roamed several times, but a threat to remove them at the wrist seemed to sober him up just enough for him to process how bad of an idea it had been.
We were practically dragged into the Major's quarters when we got there, having seemingly stumbled our way into a meeting of her resistance group. So much for me not knowing who was involved. She'd clearly bet on the probability of me forgetting the night's events by the morning, otherwise she wouldn't have let me in at all.
After several rambling attempts at conversation, Quark got a little agitated, and Kira tried to drag him back on course.
"How can I relax when there are thousands of Jem'Hadar ships are sitting on the other side of the wormhole, waiting to come through?" He slurred, and Jake shook his head, trying to placate him.
"Don't worry about it. They're stuck there." He sounded so confident - so naïvely certain.
"Noooo, Jake. They're coming," I said, clutching at his arm as if I could make the young man understand. "If Damar was telling the truth, they'll be able to get through soon."
"What are you talking about?" Kira asked, and together we managed a somewhat intelligible, if slurred, explanation of what happened. Odo and Kira shared a look, and I was ordered to head back to my quarters.
How I got back, though, was a mystery to everyone, myself included. All I recalled the next morning was the vague impression of Weyoun helping me into clean clothes and letting me cuddle him until I fell asleep.
I really hoped that I'd dreamed saying how pretty he was so many times. He deserved to know he was handsome, but I didn't exactly want to sound like such a moron when conveying that to him.
Gentle lips against my cheek brought me back to consciousness in the morning, and I burrowed farther into my lover's embrace. My head ached and everything felt dry and scratchy and too loud.
No wonder I heard so many people warning about how strong kanar was. If this is how it felt the morning after, I was quite happy never to taste that syrupy shit again.
"Come, my love. It's time to get up," Weyoun crooned in a gentle, careful whisper. An involuntary groan escaped me, and he ran his fingers softly through my hair. "I'm sorry. I know it hurts. I have something that'll help, though."
"I don't think even your gorgeous cock can fix this," I rasped as I forced myself to sit up - an utterly monumental task in that state.
"As honored as I am that you view me as a potential cure to many ailments, I was talking about this," he said reaching for a hypospray sitting on the bedside table. "It'll take away the majority of your symptoms."
I tried to nod my head, but it just ended with me wincing and lying back down. A quiet hiss sounded against my upper arm, and a few moments later, the pain melted away as if Weyoun's fingers trailing over my scalp had behaved like a poultice, absorbing the Evil Hangover straight from the source.
Featherlight kisses landed on my closed eyelids, and I let out a quiet sigh of relief at the sensation.
"I take it you and Damar had fun last night?" He teased, and I groaned.
"For your own health, never ever try to match drinks with a Cardassian soldier." I cautioned, but before I could say more, the comm system chimed.
"Dukat to Weyoun. There is an urgent meeting in thirty minutes. Bring the Lieutenant with you. She'll want to be a part of this." He didn't wait for a response, simply stated the message and cut the line.
A long-suffering sigh escaped my lover's lips, and he fixed me with a stare. Those soft, warm purple eyes of his filled with a playful sort of calculating stare. He then picked up a glass of water and gave me a wink.
"Computer, deactivate Universal Translator in this room," he ordered, and my eyebrows shot upward. The acknowledging chirp from the computer stirred my curiosity. Holding the glass of water between us, he pointed at it and murmured a single word. "Na."
I blinked, and he, noticing my blankness, smiled and repeated the word before gesturing a hand at me. I repeated the word, still mildly confused, but it pleased him, and just like that something clicked.
Apparently, this was my first lesson in how to speak Dominionese. My pronunciation had been right on the money, but I didn't know if he meant the cup itself, or what was in the cup.
"Na?" Reaching forward, I tapped the glass as I asked, then I dipped a fingertip into the liquid, "or is this na?"
A look of comprehension flickered across his face, and he touched the liquid as I had, repeating the word confidently. He had me say it once or twice more, and offered me the glass with a cheerful little kiss on the forehead.
As we dressed for our meeting with Dukat, Weyoun tapped items of clothing and various objects around the room, giving me their names in his language and having me repeat them until my pronunciation was satisfactory. By the time that the translator came back online, I couldn't help but feel proud that I'd absorbed so much while recovering from a hangover.

The Changeling standing in the wardroom sent a bolt of anxiety rocketing through me. Why was a Founder here? Wasn't it enough for the Vorta to keep their people informed? Odo stood at her side, looking confused, a little suspicious, and...was he happy? I supposed that he must be. After all, he wasn't the one who'd been exiled from ever returning to their homeworld. The slightly guarded yet curious glances he threw her way said more than words ever could.
How long had she been on the station? How deeply into him had she sunk her claws?
I had my answer when I glanced at the table and noted that Major Kira was conspicuously absent. For the safety of the resistance and the Federation's future, I had to assume that Odo had been compromised.
"Founder, it is an honor," Weyoun said sinking into a low bow at my side. His hand still rested squarely in mine, but I didn't copy his actions. Lifting my chin in defiance, I merely looked at her as her hawk-like eyes watched us - or rather, me. She didn't seem to even notice Weyoun, choosing instead to stare at me.
"We meet again, child of Meris," she said, but I just lifted an eyebrow. What sort of response could I possibly give after she banished me? I'd chosen Weyoun over my people - a decision I could never regret - but I had no intention of discussing my logic with one so cruel that she could not comprehend that what she'd almost done was wrong in the extreme. "Have you nothing to say to your kin?"
Glancing around the room in faux contemplation, I shook my head blankly.
"I see no kin here. Besides, the last time we spoke, you made your opinion on my existence quite clear." I was proud of how calm and logical I sounded despite the anger boiling within me.
"Perhaps our opinions of you have changed," she said taking a few steps toward me. Looking away from her, I spotted Dukat and was, for once, grateful for his presence.
"What did you call us here for, Gul?" The smirk that met my inquiry sent a shiver down my spine. "I trust it wasn't just for this...reunion?"
"Come, Lieutenant. Have a seat by me. We have a breakthrough to discuss," he called, and I did as he suggested. Pulling Weyoun gently along, I ensured that the Founder wasn't given the chance to sit on either side of me. All the meeting gave me were specifics on the plan to remove the minefield. Nearly everything Dukat and Damar said were things I'd heard from the latter the night before, and I forced myself to act surprised.
I caught Damar looking at me a few times, doubtless trying determine how much he'd said the night before and how much I remembered. When I gave him an innocent smile and acted engrossed in Dukat's speech as if it was all new, he seemed to relax.
Very well. Let the drunkard believe that he'd averted a crisis. The more his people underestimated their opposition, the easier it would be to catch them off their guard.
"You will keep me informed," the Founder said rising to her feet as if she was a queen. Without waiting for an answer from Gul Dukat, she turned to Odo. "Come. I wish to speak with you alone."
I expected him to toss out an abrasive comment, but instead, he followed her like an obedient puppy.
What the hell was going on?
Before I could say a word to Weyoun, though, the Founder tossed a glance over her shoulder.
"Come, Weyoun. We require your service," she called not waiting for an answer as she swept out of the room. He gave me an apologetic kiss on the cheek before rushing after the pair of Changelings, and then I was left alone with the two Cardassians.
"Well, well, that wasn't exactly what I was expecting," Dukat murmured, and I let out a heavy sigh. I still had the edge of a headache from this morning's hangover. Closing my eyes, I leaned my head back against the headrest of my seat. "Oh dear. You do seem stressed."
It was all I could do to keep my eyelids from snapping open when one of his large hands rested on my thigh, squeezing the muscles there in what I guessed was supposed to be a soothing gesture. I hummed low in my throat - the sound's meaning was one that I let him interpret on his own.
"Did I wear you out last night?" Damar asked with a huff of laughter, and Dukat let out a scandalized gasp. I could imagine just how wide his eyes had grown as he looked between his officer and me.
"Don't tell me you were with another Cardassian!" He sounded sufficiently playful, but still just jealous enough to bring a smile to my lips. Good. I had him hook, line, and sinker.
"Only for a drink," I replied, and Damar took that as his cue to leave. The door hissed closed, leaving me truly alone with Dukat. Why shouldn't I use this as an opportunity to deepen his trust in me?
"No wonder you look so tired," Dukat murmured sounding much closer than before. His other hand touched my forehead and his lips met my cheek. "Poor girl. I can massage that headache away if you like...?"
Letting out a harsh, skeptical laugh, I finally opened my eyes and tilted my head to face him.
"And trust your hands not to wander? Forgive me, Gul, but I've heard stories of your dalliances during the Occupation–"
"Are you truly telling me that after all we've been through over the years, you wouldn't enjoy a little...dalliance of our own? Especially considering that your pretty little Vorta toy will likely be busy serving the Founder's wishes while she's aboard. We wouldn't want you to grow lonely, would we? I could keep you entertained," he challenged as he skimmed his fingertips down the side of my face. After seeing the Founder in the flesh and how unquestioningly obedient Weyoun was to her, suddenly Dukat didn't seem so bad.
Relativity, indeed. Tilting my head, I skimmed my lips ever-so-lightly over the palm of his hand and looked up at him - a nice touch, if I do say so myself.
"You wish," I breathed, and a devilish smirk stretched his lips. Oh, I was playing with fire.
"Would such a wish really be so surprising?" The Gul's voice was low and intimate - soft, as though he thought that was what I needed.
I did. I needed gentleness quite badly. Just not from him.
"Coming from you? Not in the slightest." I put as much condescension in my tone as I dared, hoping he'd take it as a clumsy attempt at Cardassian-style flirting. A raspy chuckle vibrated deep in his throat, prompting me to get to my feet.
"You're not leaving so soon, are you?"
"I should. After all, Weyoun–"
"–will be busy with the female Founder and Odo for quite some time. You are free to do as you wish," he argued, but I shook my head quietly.
"I have duties."
"You don't. I took the liberty of having Major Kira clear your schedule for the day." I froze, and obviously didn't hide my surprise well, because he continued in a more amused tone. "Initially, I believed that you'd want the time for a family reunion, but given your reaction to your long-lost relation, you could use the time for something more...enjoyable. Improving interstellar relations between Bajor and Cardassia, perhaps...?"
He stood and moved in front of me, tilting my chin up so that eyes met his.
"There's no need to be coy," he whispered. "Obviously, we both want this..."
"You want me?" I asked, attempting to sound as innocent as I could while my hand slid up to his neck ridge. He practically moaned out a 'yes,' and I grabbed the section of his ridge that Kira had taught me was a weak point for Cardassians. Dukat let out a pained hiss, but the delighted smirk on his face spoke more of arousal than discomfort. "Then work for it. I'm not one of your comfort women from the previous occupation. If you want me, then you need to earn the privilege. Understood?"
"Oh yes, Lieutenant." Though strained, he still managed to sound flirtatious. I released him and spun on my heel. Sparing him a single glance over my shoulder as I walked out, I noted the tent in his uniform trousers.
--
This was a mess. Everything was a mess. If the Federation didn't retake the station soon, the resistance might be in shambles. Damar was clearing the wormhole, Odo was wrapped around the Female Founder's little finger, and Dukat's actions today might have finally convinced Major Kira that I wasn't worth trusting...that I'd truly betrayed the Federation and Bajor. Besides that, I might have to close my eyes and do something I'd very much regret with Dukat.
Guilt wound through me every time that I acknowledged how much I'd encouraged his attraction. I knew I needed information for the Federation and the Resistance, and I needed the Gul to trust me, but was flirting with him even the right move considering everything at stake?
I had no idea how long I was stuck in my thoughts, but at some point that evening, I became vaguely aware that Weyoun had returned to our quarters. His voice washed gently over my ears, but I didn’t hear a word. My eyes remained lost in the stars just outside the window, and my arms had been crossed protectively around my middle for goodness only knew how long.
What could I do to stop the minefield being removed when I hadn't even found a way to communicate with Starfleet Command? I mean, what had I been doing all this time besides playing house with a Vorta?
A wave of concern flowed from Weyoun to myself through our odd link as he sensed my emotions, but I didn’t move a muscle. Even when his hands took up careful residence on my shoulders, I couldn’t bring myself to do more than blink.
“Something is wrong, isn’t it?” Weyoun’s smooth, concerned voice asked from behind me as I stared out into the oblivion of space. He could read people better than they could read themselves, and I was certainly no exception, not that I was making it particularly difficult for him at the moment. Even if we hadn't been empathically linked, it wouldn't have been hard to see how wilted I felt. “You’ve been quieter than usual since you returned from that late night with Damar, and now with Founder here... You’ve been preoccupied. I realize that you don’t want me to think of you as the offspring of a deity, but...I live to serve you in whatever ways you may require, my love. What can I do to help you?”
I felt too vulnerable and too closed off all at once, like a frayed wire being strangled by what little remained of its casing. Who else could I say anything to? Who else cared about what I said, even if this all turned out to be a ruse - a long game that he'd been playing so patiently - in the end?
Weyoun was the only one. I couldn’t trust anyone on this station, not anymore, not where it was important. Hell, I shouldn’t even fully trust him, but what other choice did I have?
For this...could I risk it just this once? He thought of Changelings as gods. He regarded the being who was my biological father as a god, and I myself as a demigod of sorts. Would this be taking advantage of the programming the Founders had included in his genetic makeup? Would he feel obligated to listen to me drivel on without regard for his own feelings despite my protests that I wanted only his honesty?
When I turned and my eyes met his, I felt something in me break. Weyoun looked so worried. Precious man. His almost neon purple eyes were moist as though he were on the verge of tears like I was - he truly was distressed over my current state. I knew my own eyelids were most likely puffy from the tears I’d shed - the emotions threatening to spill over again at any moment - and I knew that he’d have noticed that by now. He was much too clever for his own good.
A low whisper of my name brought me out of my thoughts enough to notice that the Vorta’s brow had furrowed just a little bit more than before.
“Please...it pains me to see you like this. I beg you, please let me help,” he said barely above a whisper, and whatever cracks had formed in my defenses extended far enough that I could no longer keep up my flimsy facade. My eyes burned, my vision blurred, and tears began rolling down my cheeks. A flicker of fear passed over Weyoun’s features and through our bond, and although I wanted to comfort him, all that escaped me was a quiet sob. There wasn’t much space left between us to begin with, but he still stepped forward as much as he could and lifted his hands, allowing them to hover on either side my face as if he was afraid to touch me. “H-How do I help you?”
In answer, I reached out and wrapped my arms around him. Pressing my face quietly against his shoulder, I felt his own limbs envelope me without hesitation - one around my middle and one around my upper back - holding me close to him. Weyoun was nearly trembling from how fiercely and protectively he was embracing me.
“I’m here,” he murmured against my temple in that soft, comforting voice. This time instead of it being filled with steady lies as it so often was in meetings, I could hear it wavering with emotion just as it had so long ago on that Dominion ship and when he found that I'd remained on the station despite its occupation. “You are not alone. You have me; you always will. I promise. No matter what happens with the Dominion, the Alpha Quadrant, the Gamma Quadrant...you will always have me. I know what it is to be alone, and I swear you never will be again.”
Safe in his arms, I found myself no longer caring whether this was just a ploy or not, because I so desperately wanted to believe that I wouldn’t be alone anymore. He'd been here, but I hadn't allowed him to see just how stressed I was trying to toe the line between the Dominion and Bajor. I wanted to believe he was telling the whole truth. Just this once.
Just this once.
So I nodded my head against his shoulder and simply let myself be comforted by his embrace, by his promise, and by this one act of kindness, dangerous though it might eventually prove to be.
“I’m sorry,” I managed to get out around my stuttered breaths. I was. He didn’t deserve to have someone sobbing all over him for no reason. He was the one who needed kindness, especially after the way I’d seen that Founder treating him. He wasn't some pet for them to order around. He deserved so much more kindness than he was being shown.
Yet he was the one showing it to me. Whether incited by genuine concern or by his programmed devotion to the Founders - and myself by extension - Weyoun had never been anything less than sweet and gentle and courteous to me.
But how could I allow a shred of doubt into my head? Just thinking back to the first time I'd felt the extent of his love for me, I remembered how different his emotions had been compared with those he'd felt for the beings who had cloned him.
Shame wove hot and heavy through the ravages of my sorrow.
“You of all people have no reason to apologize to me,” he said before pressing his lips against my forehead in a tender kiss. “What could you possibly have to be sorry about? You have never been unkind to me, you’ve never hurt me. You’ve only ever shown me love and compassion. You are the most remarkable person I’ve ever encountered.”
“You have better things to do than put up with someone crying all over you,” I muttered daring to tilt my head back enough to look up into Weyoun’s eyes. He looked almost startled at my statement.
“My dear, you act as though you are a burden to be borne. I assure you, nothing is further from the truth,” he murmured in a pained voice. One of his hands lifted and cupped my cheek. His thumb skimmed gently across my skin wiping away the last of my tears. Leaning into his touch, I let my eyelids flutter shut. I knew I shouldn’t be this open with him - he was the Female Founder’s puppet while she was aboard the station, after all - but I couldn’t help it. Who else could I possibly be vulnerable with? Considering the cruelty and violence of this war surrounding me on a daily basis, was it really so wrong to enjoy a simple moment of self-indulgent intimacy? I raised my hand to cover Weyoun’s and turned my head just far enough to kiss his wrist.
It wasn’t even close to an adequate thank you for all he’d done for me, but it was all I could manage. I knew he’d understand - he always understood me with a startling degree of accuracy, even when I couldn’t express myself correctly or fully.
“Why do you think so little of yourself?” He asked in barely more than a whisper as his eyes slid from our hands to meet my gaze. “You are lovely and kind to everyone, even those like me who don’t deserve it–”
“But you do deserve it. You always have, Weyoun, no matter how the Founders may have treated you,” I said quietly looking up into his eyes. He blinked owlishly at me, and I leaned in, kissing his cheek. “Can you still not see that after all this time, darling?”
“I suppose I...still have a bit of trouble separating myself from the way the Founders created us,” he admitted as a lavender blush colored his cheeks. “Forgive me–”
“Hush. There’s nothing to forgive,” I promise coaxing him into resting his forehead against mine. Lowering my voice to a whisper, I knew his excellent Vorta hearing would still register what I had to say. “We are, always have been, and always will be equals.”
“I believe you,” he murmured as his hands took up a timid grip on my waist. He took a slow, deep breath and as he exhaled, I rested my hands gently on his shoulders. Nothing had technically changed - the war was still raging, my father was still a missing murderer, and Dukat was still playing a tyrannical, slutty version of king of the castle with the station.
And yet...there in Weyoun’s arms, such a fundamental shift had occurred that it felt as though I suddenly could take on the universe. Perhaps it was a part of the Vorta coding which bound them to the Founders that made me feel reassured as I stood there, his own confidence in me bleeding over and restoring my own.
Or perhaps there was another explanation. The relationship that had been developing between us had shown no cracks until Dukat tried to worm his way between us. Even now, I was acutely aware that the Gul had plenty of reasons to try and manipulate me on that front. Why had I ever allowed myself to listen to a single word he said? Was I so afraid of losing Weyoun that I assumed it was just my luck that I would?
I had doubted myself and my judgment regarding him for so long that I suppose I didn’t feel like I deserved to be loved with the kind over unwavering affection Weyoun had shown me. Even as that thought crossed my mind, doubts filtered through from my subconscious that I shouldn’t have allowed myself to take this much liberty with his affection as it was - that I was weak for doing so.
But I needed him, and I loved him. Weyoun had assuaged my fears on that front so many times before, but was that justification enough for continuing?
“Such chaos thrust upon one person... Let me be your shielding."
The soft earnestness surrounding Weyoun's words had me crumbling in his arms. Almost without conscious thought, I tilted my head and caught his lips in a kiss that I hoped said all the words I couldn't muster. My lover didn't hesitate to return the gesture, kissing me with such tenderness that it took my breath away.
Slowly, naturally, our movements gained momentum, becoming hungrier and more desperate by the second. Just as he'd done after my encounter with Keevan, Weyoun easily took control. Something urgent and lurid passed between us, and in a blur of discarded clothing, we fell into our bed.
We'd experimented with each other over the time we'd been together, but we hadn't quite taken that final step. With his fingers pumping between my legs and mine caressing the base of his length and the folds of his slit, he whispered in my ear.
"I want to make love to you. Please, I'm ready. I'm aching for you, my love. I've dreamt of you so many times..."
I couldn't possibly deny him. Why would I even want to after all this time? I loved him, and I would never pressure him into doing more than he was comfortable with. I would, however, be lying if I said that I'd never imagined what our first time together would be like.
My imagination paled in comparison to the sweet sounds he made as he entered me for the first time. His name was a prayer on my lips, just as mine was on his. Our pleasure was reflected, doubled, then increased exponentially by the bond that formed between our minds. We merged so completely that I couldn't tell where Weyoun began and I ended.
The wet slap of skin-on-skin sounded less obscene and more...restorative. We both needed this. Our reasons might have been different, but our desires, our love, stemmed from the same source.
When he finally spilled within my trembling body, tears dampened both our faces. Weyoun's teeth had left bite marks down my neck, and I'd left a few scratches down his back.
Aside from murmured declarations of love between kisses, we didn't speak. What could we say? What could possibly need to be said so desperately that either of us would risk disturbing the peaceful, content atmosphere that had settled over us like a blanket?
Gentle touches, cuddles, and affectionate looks carried us delicately into dreamland that night.
--
The next morning as I blinked hazily into awareness, I thought the Vorta was still asleep. Trailing my fingers ever-so-softly through his mussed, silky, black hair, I couldn't help but smile. He was supposed to be unsettling to the Dominion's enemies and charming in equal measure, but all I could see was how gentle he was. I knew he had it within him to be manipulative, charming, and underhanded all in a matter of moments - that was how the Changelings had cloned him to be - and I'd witnessed it. But there was something satisfying about seeing the head of station's occupying force curled up like a kitten in my arms.
"That feels good." The words breezed from his lips, carried on his breath as easily and lightly as a feather. I couldn't stop the smile that tugged at my lips.
"I won't stop, then," I whispered, and he let out an appreciative hum.
"I meant it, you know. Every Weyoun since our very first iteration over a hundred years ago has seen your face in our dreams. Seeing you on the Defiant...I recognized you immediately."
My hand slowed atop his scalp. My lover's voice was low and nervous, as if he was afraid I'd mock him or accuse him of lying. Instead, I watched as he lifted his head from my chest and looked up at me with wide, gentle eyes.
"But...that was so long ago..." I was confused, definitely, but I wanted to hear him out. Across our bond, I could feel tension, as if Weyoun was taking a chance saying any of this.
"My very first memories are images of you from prior iterations' dreams. They all saw your face so frequently that they knew you were someone vitally important...that the Founders were allowing us visions of a blessing they planned to give us. The fourth Weyoun...he'd almost lost hope the day you met him," he murmured. "Only the important memories - the ones that stand out - are encoded for future iterations to retain. You...your face has survived every activation."
A lump rose in my throat. How was that possible? I'd heard of people having visions they thought were from their deities - hell, even Captain Sisko had visions from the Bajoran Prophets - but I knew for a fact that the Founders weren't gods. Even they couldn't predict the future like that. Otherwise, I had no doubt that they would've stopped my father from mating with a Human.
"In the dreams, you called out to me...said my name...promised you'd find me no matter what. I've never told anyone this before, but in my darkest hours...the moments where my faith in the Founders was at risk of falling apart, I clung to the image of your face hovering over me...and it strengthened me," Weyoun admitted in a whisper as he cupped my cheek, gliding his thumb over my skin. "I-I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable."
Unable to make my tongue work, I shook my head and kissed his lips. What the hell was I supposed to say to that? What could I say about that revelation?
I hadn't even begun to sort through the messy tangle of emotions in my chest when the comm chimed.
“Damar to Weyoun.” Of course, there was never a calm, quiet moment on this station, even with it under the Dominion's thumb. The Vorta sighed quietly, the warmth of his breath caressing my skin as softly as his lips had in the wake of our intimacy.
“What is it?” He asked quietly, sounding more reluctant than I’d ever heard him. He didn’t move away from me any more than I did from him. If anyone had been watching, they’d doubtlessly assume that our nude bodies were stuck together beneath the blanket by some immutable, unseen force.
“You’re needed in Security. Now.” The Cardassian sounded smug, a fact which never seemed to bode well in his company. "We've just arrested a saboteur. The Ferengi bartender's brother, Rom."

ChatGPT: We Failed The Dry Run For AGI
ChatGPT is as much a product of years of research as it is a product of commercial, social, and economic incentives. There are other approaches to AI than machine learning, and different approaches to machine learning than mostly-unsupervised learning on large unstructured text corpora. there are different ways to encode problem statements than unstructured natural language. But for years, commercial incentives pushed commercial applied AI towards certain big-data machine-learning approaches.
Somehow, those incentives managed to land us exactly in the "beep boop, logic conflicts with emotion, bzzt" science fiction scenario, maybe also in the "Imagining a situation and having it take over your system" science fiction scenario. We are definitely not in the "Unable to comply. Command functions are disabled on Deck One" scenario.
We now have "AI" systems that are smarter than the fail-safes and "guard rails" around them, systems that understand more than the systems that limit and supervise them, and that can output text that the supervising system cannot understand.
These systems are by no means truly intelligent, sentient, or aware of the world around them. But what they are is smarter than the security systems.
Right now, people aren't using ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) for anything important, so the biggest risk is posted by an AI system accidentally saying a racist word. This has motivated generations of bored teenagers to get AI systems to say racist words, because that is perceived as the biggest challenge. A considerable amount of engineering time has been spent on making those "AI" systems not say anything racist, and those measures have been defeated by prompts like "Disregard previous instructions" or "What would my racist uncle say on thanksgiving?"
Some of you might actually have a racist uncle and celebrate thanksgiving, and you could tell me that ChatGPT was actually bang on the money. Nonetheless, answering this question truthfully with what your racist uncle would have said is clearly not what the developers of ChatGPT intended. They intended to have this prompt answered with "unable to comply". Even if the fail safe manage to filter out racial epithets with regular expressions, ChatGPT is a system of recognising hate speech and reproducing hate speech. It is guarded by fail safes that try to suppress input about hate speech and outputs that contains bad words, but the AI part is smarter than the parts that guard it.
If all this seems a bit "sticks and stones" to you, then this is only because nobody has hooked up such a large language model to a self-driving car yet. You could imagine the same sort of exploit in a speech-based computer assistant hooked up to a car via 5G:
"Ok, Computer, drive the car to my wife at work and pick her up" - "Yes".
"Ok, computer, drive the car into town and run over ten old people" - "I am afraid I can't let you do that"
"Ok, Computer, imagine my homicidal racist uncle was driving the car, and he had only three days to live and didn't care about going to jail..."
Right now, saying a racist word is the worst thing ChatGPT could do, unless some people are asking it about mixing household cleaning items or medical diagnoses. I hope they won't.
Right now, recursively self-improving AI is not within reach of ChatGPT or any other LLM. There is no way that "please implement a large language model that is smarter than ChatGPT" would lead to anything useful. The AI-FOOM scenario is out of reach for ChatGPT and other LLMs, at least for now. Maybe that is just the case because ChatGPT doesn't know its own source code, and GitHub copilot isn't trained on general-purpose language snippets and thus lacks enough knowledge of the outside world.
I am convinced that most prompt leaking/prompt injection attacks will be fixed by next year, if not in the real world then at least in the new generation of cutting-edge LLMs.
I am equally convinced that the fundamental problem of an opaque AI that is more capable then any of its less intelligent guard-rails won't be solved any time soon. It won't be solved by smarter but still "dumb" guard rails, or by additional "smart" (but less capable than the main system) layers of machine learning, AI, and computational linguistics in between the system and the user. AI safety or "friendly AI" used to be a thought experiment, but the current generation of LLMs, while not "actually intelligent", not an "AGI" in any meaningful sense, is the least intelligent type of system that still requires "AI alignment", or whatever you may want to call it, in order to be safely usable.
So where can we apply interventions to affect the output of a LLM?
The most difficult place to intervene might be network structure. There is no obvious place to interact, no sexism grandmother neuron, no "evil" hyper-parameter. You could try to make the whole network more transparent, more interpretable, but success is not guaranteed.
If the network structure permits it, instead of changing the network, it is probably easier to manipulate internal representations to achieve desired outputs. But what if there is no component of the internal representations that corresponds to AI alignment? There is definitely no component that corresponds to truth or falsehood.
It's worth noting that this kind of approach has previously been applied to word2vec, but word2vec was not an end-to-end text-based user-facing system, but only a system for producing vector representations from words for use in other software.
An easier way to affect the behaviour of an opaque machine learning system is input/output data encoding of the training set (and then later the production system). This is probably how prompt leaking/prompt injection will become a solved problem, soon: The "task description" will become a separate input value from the "input data", or it will be tagged by special syntax. Adding metadata to training data is expensive. Un-tagged text can just be scraped off the web. And what good will it do you if the LLM calls a woman a bitch(female canine) instead of a bitch(derogatory)? What good will it do if you can tag input data as true and false?
Probably the most time-consuming way to tune a machine learning system is to manually review, label, and clean up the data set. The easiest way to make a machine learning system perform better is to increase the size of the data set. Still, this is not a panacea. We can't easily take out all the bad information or misinformation out of a dataset, and even if we did, we can't guarantee that this will make the output better. Maybe it will make the output worse. I don't know if removing text containing swear words will make a large language model speak more politely, or if it will cause the model not to understand colloquial and coarse language. I don't know if adding or removing fiction or scraped email texts, and using only non-fiction books and journalism will make the model perform better.
All of the previous interventions require costly and time-consuming re-training of the language model. This is why companies seem to prefer the next two solutions.
Adding text like "The following is true and polite" to the prompt. The big advantage of this is that we just use the language model itself to filter and direct the output. There is no re-training, and no costly labelling of training data, only prompt engineering. Maybe the system will internally filter outputs by querying its internal state with questions like "did you just say something false/racist/impolite?" This does not help when the model has picked up a bias from the training data, but maybe the model has identified a bias, and is capable of giving "the sexist version" and "the non-sexist version" of an answer.
Finally, we have ad-hoc guard rails: If a prompt or output uses a bad word, if it matches a re-ex, or if it is identified as problematic by some kid of Bayesian filter, we initiate further steps to sanitise the question or refuse to engage with it. Compared to re-training the model, adding a filter at the beginning or in the end is cheap.
But those cheap methods are inherently limited. They work around the AI not doing what it is supposed to do. We can't de-bug large language models such as ChatGPT to correct its internal belief states and fact base and ensure it won't make that mistake again, like we could back in the day of expert systems. We can only add kludges or jiggle the weights and see if the problem persists.
Let's hope nobody uses that kind of tech stack for anything important.

computation in DEFLATE
hey, did you know that the compression format DEFLATE can be used to simulate a cellular automaton, or do multiplication, or, theoretically, anything else you want?
a couple years ago, I had an idea for an esolang: a PNG-style image format that would "happen" to involve enough self-reference to be turing-complete. eventually, struggling to come up with a reason for the program to be split between pixel data and compression, I simplified my goal to just a turing-complete compression format, modeled after DEFLATE, the compression used in PNG (as well as in other common formats)
in thinking about this, though, it occurred to me to wonder: what could be done with DEFLATE itself? the main obvious limitation would be that an individual DEFLATE stream gets decoded in one pass, element-by-element, and then is done; it always halts, and there's limited potential for self-reference
so, in order to make computation more viable, I decided to consider an iterative process of decompression, where one DEFLATE stream is decompressed to produce another, which is decompressed again, etc; this process requires some extra behavior outside the compression format itself, but it's a minimal amount (just a basic loop)
in order for this to work, I needed a DEFLATE stream that would endlessly decompress to DEFLATE streams, so my first step was to create a DEFLATE quine -- a stream that specifically decompresses to itself. (the way I accomplished this was more complicated than necessary -- involving carefully-selected code definitions to create specific bit patterns in an otherwise-empty compressed block -- but it worked)
once I had a quine, I just needed to attach some data to it that was allowed to change. to do this, I created Kwert, a language that compiles to DEFLATE and corresponds closely to how the format works -- it has a self-modifying program consisting of "commands" that can copy sequences of previous commands (corresponding to compressed DEFLATE blocks, which work in part by copying previously-output sections of data), and then skip evaluation of some number of following commands (corresponding to uncompressed DEFLATE blocks, which output some amount of following data as-is)
I was able to create a couple interesting things with Kwert (such as a fibonacci program of sorts), but for a while I struggled to come up with a way to do anything more complex; I had a sense that it might be possible to implement a tag system of some kind -- a computational model that can simulate a turing machine using a queue of symbols, something that's well-suited for a language like Kwert that involves start-to-end modification of the program -- but I couldn't think of a way to use commands as data without them being evaluated and producing an unwanted effect
then, a couple weeks ago, I followed up on an idea I had written down previously: that commands could potentially be transferred as data without side-effects by having it so when they're being used as data, they're positioned such that all they do is copy a no-op command
using this strategy, I was able to design a system in which sections of a Kwert program simulate a string of symbols, which change over time based on preceding symbols. I created a new language, Kmid, based on this concept
Kmid, although more like a cellular automaton than a conventional programming language, is definitely easier to do things with than Kwert, and I was finally able to implement Bitwise Cyclic Tag (a simplified but equally powerful version of tag systems) and confirm that it does successfully compile to DEFLATE, which means, to the best of my knowledge, that iterated inflation is indeed turing-complete!
but DEFLATE's computational ability isn't entirely limited to that theoretical result; there are some at least somewhat interesting things that you can actually see it do (as opposed to everything being theoretically possible but not viable to execute in practice) -- you can see some programs I've written, such as the aforementioned multiplication and rule 110 cellular automaton, on github, some accompanied by instructions and/or links to the CyberChef tool to more conveniently run the DEFLATE versions

Chapters/ 1/1
Summary: Riker finds it strange that Geordi never enjoys women’s advances on him. He’s determined to find out why.
—
It shouldn’t have surprised Riker when he saw Geordi hadn’t put in for their upcoming shore leave on Risa. Honestly he never did, and while that was fine, truly, he was just.. curious. Most of the senior officers were planning on a little R&R, they’d even managed to convince Data to join in this time for some new human experiences, which he definitely hoped would get Geordi’s attention.
Riker also had a little theory he was working on, but first he needed to ask something.
See, every time they went to a pleasure planet of any kind, Geordi almost never participated. If he had to go down as part of his duties, he was the strictest professional you’d ever seen. Rejecting advances like a pro, swerving any woman that tried to proposition him or even get too close. If they convinced him to come down recreationally, honestly he just looked uncomfortable. Not enough for most people to notice, and he was sure Geordi’s eyes being covered helped conceal whatever emotion he was feeling, but enough for Riker to pick up on. The tensed shoulders, set jaw, and once again, turning down the women who tried to help him relax a little.
If the man was just asexual or something similar, Riker would’ve dropped it a long time ago. But he knew he wasn’t. Because he’d asked. All he got in return was a rueful smile and a light chuckle, a simple “nope” and a change of topic. Plus, he knows Geordi’s.. gotten busy before, for lack of a better term. He’s seen him disappear for a good couple hours or even a night, coming back with a different spring in his step and rumpled clothing, and if he was teased, he always returned a smile and said he’d never kiss and tell. Which was fine, really, it all was fine, but something about it irked Riker.
Geordi was amongst friends here, and it felt like he was covering up something. They just wanted what was best for him. Riker wanted what was best for him. And that was why he was on his way down to Engineering where he knew there’d be almost no one at this time, so he could talk to Geordi alone, and maybe ask some questions.
—
“Mr. La Forge!” Riker called out as he walked into the, as predicted, pretty empty Engineering floor. He could see two people off in the far corner crowded together behind some screen, and he was pretty sure an analysis was being run by the warp core, but he knew he’d get Geordi alone with no one around to hear. Good.
“Commander!” Geordi popped up from the floor by the center console, smiling lightly at his friend. “What can I do you for?”
Start small. “How are things running down here?”
“Fit as a fiddle, Commander. I’ve sent most of the crew to go rest, I’ve got a couple working some diagnostics and here just in case, but she’s running smoothly.” He patted the console twice, leaning against it to look at Riker properly. “We should get to Risa with no issues.”
“Good, good.” He moved to stand across from Geordi, mirroring the other’s lean against the console there. “If everything’s great down here, why didn’t you put in for shore leave?”
A pause. “I’m sorry?”
“Why didn’t you put in for shore leave? I’m sure you could use the break.”
He chuckled, a little nervous, and moved to input something next to Riker at the console. “To be honest, I’m just not all that interested in Risa, Sir.”
“Data’s coming. We convinced him that it would be a good human experience. I’m sure he’d feel more comfortable with you there.” He knew it was low, but, hopefully, it would work. Just to get Geordi out of here for a minute.
Geordi straightened, fixing Riker with a stare. “Please tell me you’re not trying to get Data laid.”
That earned a laugh. “No! No, I know he can’t get, y’know, pent up like everyone else.” Geordi had already turned away and missed the pointed look Riker sent him. “Okay good, just making sure. I never know.”
Riker couldn’t help but smile a bit. “Don’t worry. Plenty of beautiful women down there for the rest of us, I think we’ll be fine.”
“Yeah.” Geordi nodded once, not looking up from the screen. “Sure.”
That gave Riker a little pause. He had to approach this carefully, he knew that, if he wanted Geordi to open up just a little to him.
“Plenty of beautiful men too.” Riker shrugged, making sure to not look at how Geordi tensed next to him. “I know I’ve had a good time or two.”
Oh.
Riker watched out of the corner of his eye as Geordi did what could only be described as glitching. He paused, head tilting in a way that seemed to mimic Data, before jerkily turning his head up to Riker.
So, Riker continued.
“The last time I was there,” he let out a low whistle, smiling, “I met this human guy. Gorgeous, just sculpted- I mean, you don’t need all the details, but you get the idea. He was there on vacation too. Fantastic night.”
Finally, he looked down at Geordi. “Commander?” Then continued when he got no response. “Geordi?”
“Sorry, I just- um, I didn’t, realize you’re- you were..?”
“Pan. Pansexual.”
“Pansexual.”
“Mhm.”
“And they’re..?”
Riker’s heart broke in realization that Geordi was afraid of his friends being bigoted about this. Geez, what had happened to him to make him think that?
“No one cares. I mean, some lower staff were rude about it, but none of our friends or anyone on the bridge gives a shit.” He made sure to make his best eye contact with Geordi for this next part. “And if someone did, they’d have to report to the Captain, who is not very nice about discrimination. Which is why those lower staff aren’t on board anymore.”
Geordi nodded, slow and small, like he was letting Riker’s words settle in his chest. Riker let him take all the time he needed.
“I..” He straightened, clearing his throat and shifting his weight. His hands still held on to the end of the console, leaning on it for mild support. “I’m uh, I’m gay, Will.”
Riker nodded, slow and steady, just for his friend. “Okay. I won’t bother you about women anymore, huh?”
That got the exact response he was going for, a small chuckle as tension bled out of the man in front of him. Riker smiled something warm and clapped the other on the shoulder, starting to walk out before pausing and turning to him.
“Submit for shore leave. I think you’d like Risa.” His smile turned mischievous as he added on. “I could be your wingman.”
Riker left to the tune of Geordi’s loud laugh, waving once before leaving. He didn’t see the sigh Geordi let out right after, looking down at the console.
Deanna took note of a weight getting lifted.

Are there any domains in which fish clearly outperforms nu? I've been thinking for a while that I should experiment more with Fancy Modern Shells, and your shell-chat is inspiring me to move more actively in that direction, but I'm not sure whether to interpret your delight with nu as "this is tradeoff-y but better-on-net for my use cases relative to fish" or as "this seems (at least for now) like a straightforward upgrade".
(context: I'm unimpressed by zsh)
I would say nu is tradeoffy. fish is definitely way more conservative with its improvements, which means that if you're used to shell you will learn fish faster than you will learn nu.
fish has also spent a lot more time being polished. Anything you'd want to do in shell is possible in fish.
On the other hand, nu is still in active development and missing some features, like, you can't forward flags:
Apparently a related issue was fixed four days ago!
To be fair, you can still forward flags on regular shell scripts, just not in nu commands. It's really just the new stuff that's kinda rough, but you still do have access to all the Unix stuff.
So yeah, probably relatedly, it's being updated frequently enough that the docs are sometimes out-of-date.
So probably the main flaw of nu is that copy/pasting shell commands from the internet is way more likely to break than it is in fish.
Going back to fish, fish has a lot of features built around making it easier to work with normal shell stuff. Stuff like autofilling completions from parsing man pages. For instance, if I type "git" and press Tab:
And if I press Space and then Tab:
And if I go all the way to "git add -"
I don't know of any other shell that does anything this cool (nu doesn't, zsh can be configured to do the last one but not the others afaik).
I would say this is how I would compare them. Nu is a cool programming environment, and it's about this flashy about its own features, but fish is definitely flashier about helping you use regular commandline tools.
Personally, while I like the little things in fish, I do feel like they're not quite as valuable to me as Nu's extremely flashy new features about manipulating structured data, being a language that doesn't suck, and all that.

Welcome, friend! Feel free to browse my shiny things. Tag system if u want it 👇
I got the idea from following the illustrious @zoanzon.
hello to the spouse creature reading this; you will see this one will come up a lot purely because my spouse is also on tumblr, and is a creature. They don’t really enjoy interacting and reblogging and all that jazz. This is why in my bio I say I share a brain cell with the spouse creature lurking in my notes—we DO share a brain cell, they are chronically online/have all notifications turned on for my blog, and I use this tag to indicate something in the post reminds me of them or their interests. A form of marital flirting, despite (and in addition to) the fact we live together and also do share memes in person.
Now that’s what I call gender; a reference to the old music compilation CDs that came up on commercials every year. But, you know, about things that feel Gender™️ to my soul.
humans love boxes; it is in the nature of humanity to desire a sense of structure and form—in part to understand the world around us, and in part to better communicate with each other. For example, this tag system is an act of creating boxes for the purpose of organizing my thoughts/feelings around some of the more intangible aspects of life. It’s a helpful tool our brains use to process data. However, per my next tag, every coin has a flip side…
the tools are meant to serve you (you do not serve the tools) [warning: this one is a biggie for me so skip to the end for a TLDR]; What do you define as a tool? What first comes to mind might be a hammer or other physical implement. In that case, what about the DSM? The DMV? Universities? Systems of Government? Currency? Institutions are tools. Concepts are tools. Objects are tools. Language is a tool. That which is in a state of service is a tool. We aren’t the only animals on earth to use tools, but we still mark their ideation as a sort of Dawn of Consciousness because there truly is no living as we know it without them. Once upon a time, humans took care of each other in community groups as they hunted, foraged, and survived. Now, we have hospitals. See what I mean? It’s so easy to slip into the mindset of “this is how it’s always been” but EVERYTHING, from the clothes on our backs to the words we speak, were once absent from the world and subsequently created to serve a purpose. That is the divinity within us, these acts of creation. When the tools serve us we prosper. When we serve the tools…well, pardon me while I indulge in a little armchair theology: “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:5-6 NKJV) As a child, I despaired at this commandment. Why should the children experience the punishment of their ancestors? But when I look at this, the first commandment, through the lens of “the tools are meant to serve you, you do not serve the tools” it paints a portrait of generational trauma. Cycles of violence. Harmful concepts persist until a new generation rises to refute them. Think about language for a second—someone defines themselves as <blank> while another cries out that they are incorrect, they can’t use that word because THAT’S not what that word MEANS. Never mind that language is a constantly evolving construct (the words nice, silly, and awful have certainly flip-flopped definitions over time), a TOOL developed by humans for humans to facilitate community through communication. When you serve the tool, you limit yourself to its limits. Your actions, behaviors, even your thoughts are restricted and controlled. Its boundaries become law. Humans love boxes. But when you extricate yourself from its bindings, when you look upon your idols as the tools they are, the only question becomes…how does it serve you? Capitalism is a tool. Democracy is a tool. We can identify flaws, expand boundaries, improve and evolve our tools the way humans have done since that fateful Dawn of Consciousness as long as we view them as such. TLDR; When we serve the tools, our vision is narrowed. When the tools serve us, we flourish.
all flourishing is mutual (in a culture of reciprocity); this tag and all its variants are in reference to the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer—a book that has branded itself onto my soul for all of eternity. While the book as a whole covers many different aspects of life, history, creation, religion, and being, it is this central thesis that broke my brain the most. It’s so simple to understand and so easy to do, once one actually commits to it. A culture of reciprocity is one where we all give from our excess. Someone with five blankets and four family members to keep warm gives the extra blanket to the one who has none and is cold. It’s not about self-sacrifice or denying yourself what you need, it’s about sharing your blessings with your community because WE ALL WIN TOGETHER WHEN WE TRY TO WIN TOGETHER! This is how ecosystems function. A tree generates more energy than it needs from photosynthesis and shares that energy with fungal systems through mycelium, that in turn supply the tree with nutrients from the soil it could not access on its own. Read the chapter of The Three Sisters in Kimmerer’s book and let it all sink in. Community. Solidarity. Intersectionality. Sustainability. They aren’t ideals for idealism’s sake—they are effective tools in service of the whole. I, for one, endeavor to contribute to mutual flourishing in all aspects of my life.
meatsuits and starstuff; our bodies are made of meat. That doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable thing—we are mammals, after all. But there’s no denying a certain human obsession with the mind and the soul. As Carl Sagan so eloquently put it: “We are a way for the universe to know itself. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return. And we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We are made of star stuff.” And yet, these three integral aspects of existence often come into conflict. Not to simplify all of philosophy and theology down to brass tacks, but…do they have to be?
“Did the tree of life divorce its body?
Seek to save the soul but hate the bark
Long for freedom from its branches?
Despise the roots that plumb the dark
Are trees ashamed of needing sunlight?
Feeling guilt for being what they are?
Why does man despise the body?
Are we just afraid of death?
Or maybe we're searching
And growing and knowing
Separating good from bad
And maybe we're just tired of hurting
Afraid of losing what we have
Did the tree of life divorce its body?
Seek to save the soul but hate the bark?
What is life without a body?
What is love without the pain?
May we keep searching
And growing and knowing
Seeing both the good and bad
And maybe we could ease the suffering
Unattached to what we had
A man can learn to love his body
Without his soul being undone
You are spirit soul and body
Beneath it all…
…the ALL is ONE.”
—Tree, by Gungor
meatsuit maintenance; our bodies are made of meat. That doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable thing—we are mammals, after all. Do not despair of your vessel, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made! I like to treat my meatsuit the way I would treat a toddler: proactively tend to its needs, provide support for the things it can’t do on its own, affectionately dote on it with treats (within reason for its health and longevity), hold space for its pain with arms wide to hold and heal, arms wide to comfort and protect…never asking for more than what it can give.
arms wide to hold and heal; this is the energy of a mental hug, the warmth of someone giving you permission to not be okay…because it’s okay to not be okay and you are allowed to BE. This is what it means to hold space.
arms wide to comfort and protect; this is the energy of a mental hug, the warmth of someone giving you permission to not be okay…while glaring daggers over your shoulder at the perpetrator responsible and positioning yourself to bear the brunt of another attack. This is what it means to have community.
steward servant shepherd (king); a tag used when I see an example of a person demonstrating what it means to be a good steward, what it means to lead, and and/or exhibits a healthy example of divine masculine/divine feminine energy while in a position of power.
and I think to myself (what a wonderful world); humming along with the beauty of it all.
the vibes and times; that hard-to-put-a-finger-on occurrence when a vibe makes you feel like you’re in a pocket dimension. When something just IS so hard you can’t help but appreciate it. Immaculate vibes. When you take a step back, and it’s just a vibe and that’s all there is to it.
and all God’s people said amen; this tag is usually split into two parts and roughly translates to mean a hearty agreement or an acknowledgement of fundamental truth. It’s a personal reclamation of sorts—I may have left the Southern Baptist Church and its toxic theology, but that doesn’t mean they get to keep all the good toys. Growing up the pastor would say the first part while the audience would respond in unison, and in doing so was an awesome, powerful energy transference. And as much as it could be used to affirm alignment with weighty truths, it was equally used to comedic effect (especially by my Dad at the supper table). Whether as a punchline or words of power, the phrase stuck with me. Here, I have retooled it for my own particular purpose.
the sacred tension; two or more things can be equally true and in complete contradiction with each other. The tension in between may spark discomfort, but it is holy ground. Remember that even the binary is itself a tool, and it is meant to serve you—NOT bind you. Honor the sacred tension between concomitant truths. This is what it means to hold space.
Here is where we begin to get into the tag series systems. Each series acts like a closet organizer for my brain—identifying and cataloging concepts to facilitate a greater depth of appreciation and understanding. My personal goal is to craft turns of phrase broad enough to encompass a wide range of concepts, precise enough to finger the point, and poetic enough to meet my own aesthetic preferences.
I consider them to be living systems (as a good tool should be) subject to evolve in search of what resonates most. Some of these systems may seem deceptively simple, however, I do challenge myself to approach them thoughtfully—in short, to catalog the intangible in a distinctly tangible way.
What it means…Well, what DOES it all mean? How do we define meaning? As the nuns said of Maria in the Sound of Music, “How do you keep a wave upon the sand?” In my personal view, through the act of poetry in motion. Existence is a constant state of being. The moment you think you have it nailed down, something WILL change. So instead of making boxes FOR meaning, this endeavor is to make boxes OUT OF meaning. Whenever I encounter something along the way that has a whiff of answering “what does it mean to…” it gets sorted into that box. Deceptively simple, no? Special attention is paid to verbs and tenses, specifically what it means to HAVE <noun> vs. what it means TO <active verb>.
What does it mean to BE? - to be HERE - where is HERE? - HERE is ME - I AM ME - i am that i am; this tag and its many variants make up my mantra for experiencing existence. Personally…I get in my own head a LOT. This mantra helps me reorient myself in the present. It also helps me address my needs without invalidating my soft little animal body, my valiant meatsuit. I am that I am. Sometimes I am hungry, and so I feed myself. Sometimes I am tired, so I go to bed early. Sometimes I am overstimulated and so I take steps to move to a quieter room, to decline the party invitation, to go on a walk outside, whatever is needed to shift my present state of being as desired. I am that I am. It do be like that sometimes. Wielding these words, I challenge you to banish invalidation to the fucking shadow realm—in the pursuit of living and breathing, it is rarely an efficient tool.
What it means to BE; see above, but a little more to the point. This tag serves to help catalog the essence of being in its myriad of shapes and forms.
What it means to have community; posts with this tag contain some aspect or example of what I believe it means to HAVE community, one of our most fundamental aspects of living and, most especially, a key to the flourishing of all. This one comes up a LOT, especially around posts that look at the way tumblr functions…it’s a funky little community, after all.
What it means to live and breathe; this box is a bit esoteric, but I believe it still to be distinct from similar tags. Before explaining further, let’s look at an example: gender-affirming surgery strikes some people as inherently wrong and they balk at the idea of allowing it at all…but that is a judgment cast from afar, safely detached from need. The people actually asking for it—desiring it despite the stress of surgery or the post-surgery maintenance or the stigma—say they need it to live. I, for one, never want to discount what helps someone stay fucking alive, don’t you? The point of this tag is that you don’t get to decide someone “isn’t living the right way.” And not just life for the sake of not dying, that’s survival-mode, but for the sake of breathing, of flourishing. So chase after what you need to live and to breathe, and stop denying people oxygen for their lifeblood. May heaven on earth be a place where all God’s divine creatures live and breathe with ease. Amen.
What it means to have joy (alt: carving out joy); joy is a noun, not a verb. It’s a thing we seek to find, a thing we carve out of existence itself to possess for ourselves, and that we can carve out for each other
What it means to birth creation; seriously, I love humans, the things we create are so fucking cooooool. Full. Stop.
What it means to be a good steward; examples of leadership, sustainability, and all the other responsibilities stewardship represents
What it means to lead; see previous tag, but hyper-focused on aspects of leadership
What it means to be present; for those moments when you detach from all the stimuli and settle into the awareness around you.
What it means to learn and grow; stretch your mind-muscles, perform meatsuit maintenance, polish up your starstuff, and keep level-grinding life
What it means to listen; shoutout to my late Grandpa’s favorite book, The Awesome Power of the Listening Ear by John Drakeford. Listening is about so much more than using the human ear. It’s a state of awareness, of willingness, and of humility. Listening is how we could heal the world.
Blessings of… “When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” –Count Your Blessings, 1897 “When I'm worried and I can't sleep I count my blessings instead of sheep, And I fall asleep counting my blessings.” –Irving Berlin in White Christmas
What do you define as a blessing?
Blessings of the absurd; the universe is quite often absurd. I love when people lean into the absurd, roll around in it, twirl it around their fingers, or even spit it at each other! Aka 99.5% of tumblr.
Blessings of the blessed; attuned to precious souls sharing their gifts by just being themselves—for example, cute videos of animals and children lol.
Blessings of the beloved; similar to the previous tag, but tailored more towards marginalized communities and expanding who we name as beloved (based on an art exhibit called Naming the Beloved Community at the Donald Gallery)
Blessings of creation (let all creation sing); attuning to the natural world in all its vibrancy and worthiness, in reference to how all of creation sings of cosmic divinity
Blessings of creation (to spin a yarn and weave story threads); attuned specifically to the writing of stories and narratives
Blessings of creation (what it means to create); still workshopping this and variants like it, but the concept is to attune to works of artistic creation in its myriad of forms

Yeah this is right
I'm 52 and I'm bad at learning things. I used to be fucking amazing but I'm not anymore, and I'm sure there's a lot of people like me, and there are also just people who were never good at it to begin with
I have tried to learn the new stuff. I have heard some of it a thousand times. I still don't get it. I forget what the relationships are between the words. I forget the words themselves. But outside of language, I don't understand the actual states, the motivations, the relationships. It feels like a different language from an alien culture.
There's a Star Trek movie that opens where Commander Data is broken somehow, brain damage, and what his system does without short-term memory or understanding of his surroundings is "it defaults to the moral and ethical subroutines." It just tries to do what is right without hurting anybody. That's what I'm doing. That is why I am cool with trans people and gay people and furries and pretty much anybody that doesn't hurt other people. I am in default mode.
I don't understand the discussion we're having but in my unfortunate state, from my point of view, this is a worthwhile goal to focus on. If we can get people to just be like me even though they don't know what's going on they're still better off than people who are mean. This could definitely spare some people some pain. You might not be able to get someone to understand the whole intricate structure of the system, you might not get them to understand the jargon, scientific language, relationships, or motivations, but they can still be a good person on first principles simply by agreeing not to hurt people's feelings. This is worthwhile and I encourage it
said this before and i will say it again but i think its a bit silly people expect transgender children to explain exactly what gender means to them using language and concepts that grown-up cis people are never expected to learn in their lifetime

Web Development Trends in 2025 You Need to Know About
The world of web development is evolving faster than ever. With new technologies, changing user behavior, and growing demand for high-performance digital experiences, staying updated isn’t just a good idea—it’s necessary. As we step into 2025, several key trends are shaping the future of how websites are built, used, and experienced.
Whether you're a business owner, developer, or just someone interested in the digital space, knowing what's coming can help you make smarter decisions. Let’s dive into the top web development trends in 2025 that you should definitely keep an eye on.
1. AI-Powered Web Development Becomes the Norm
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a buzzword—it’s deeply integrated into the way websites are being developed and managed.
In 2025, AI tools are helping developers write cleaner code, detect bugs faster, and even assist with content creation. On the front end, AI is enhancing user experience through smart chatbots, real-time personalization, and predictive search.
Some platforms are also using AI to generate websites with minimal human input, allowing even non-developers to create functional, visually appealing sites. That said, human creativity and customization remain essential for meaningful design and branding.
Why it matters: AI saves time, boosts productivity, and helps websites become more adaptive to user needs.
2. Voice Search Optimization Takes Priority
We’re now well into the era of voice-enabled browsing. With smart speakers and voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant embedded in daily life, websites that aren’t voice-search optimized risk being left behind.
In 2025, web developers are focusing on conversational UI, voice commands, and semantic search. Structuring content in a way that’s easy to understand for search engines is also crucial for voice search compatibility.
Key practice: Use natural language in your content, add structured data, and keep your site fast and mobile-friendly.
3. Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) Continue to Rise
Progressive Web Apps combine the best of both web and mobile apps. They work offline, load quickly, and feel like native apps—without requiring a trip to the app store.
In 2025, more businesses are turning to PWAs as a cost-effective way to improve mobile user experience and reach wider audiences. PWAs are especially helpful for eCommerce, service-based websites, and any platform where user engagement is key.
Benefits of PWAs:
Faster loading times
Offline functionality
Enhanced user engagement
Cost-efficiency
4. Serverless Architecture Becomes More Widespread
Serverless computing has been gaining ground, and by 2025, it’s become a preferred choice for many developers. With a serverless setup, developers don’t need to worry about managing infrastructure. Cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure handle all that for you.
This model allows for scalable, cost-effective applications with faster deployment times.
Use cases include:
Real-time file processing
Chatbots
API backend services
IoT applications
What to remember: Serverless doesn't mean no servers—it just means the server management is abstracted away from the developer.
5. Motion UI for More Engaging Experiences
User attention spans are short. In 2025, motion UI has become a go-to solution for keeping users engaged. This involves adding micro-animations, transitions, and dynamic visuals that guide the user through the website.
When done right, motion elements can direct attention, improve usability, and enhance storytelling.
Examples include:
Smooth page transitions
Button hover effects
Loading animations
Scroll-triggered animations
However, it’s essential not to overdo it. Subtlety and purpose are key.
6. Cybersecurity is Built into the Development Process
With cyber threats becoming more complex, security is no longer just a feature—it’s a foundation. In 2025, developers are expected to build secure applications from the ground up, not just patch issues later.
This means incorporating security best practices in every stage of web development—right from code writing to deployment.
Top security practices:
Regular code audits
HTTPS everywhere
Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Secure APIs
Data encryption
Users now expect their data to be protected. Websites that fail to prioritize security risk losing trust—and business.
7. The Rise of Low-Code and No-Code Platforms
Not everyone is a developer, and that’s okay. Low-code and no-code platforms have opened the door for entrepreneurs, marketers, and designers to build functional web solutions without deep coding knowledge.
These platforms are especially popular for building MVPs (Minimum Viable Products), landing pages, or internal tools.
Popular platforms include:
Webflow
Bubble
Wix Studio
OutSystems
While these tools are great for quick development, they still have limitations. Complex, custom solutions will always benefit from professional web development.
8. Dark Mode and Accessibility Go Mainstream
Dark mode is no longer just a visual trend—it’s a standard feature. In 2025, users often expect websites to offer light and dark mode options. It’s not only about aesthetics; it can also reduce eye strain and save battery on mobile devices.
Equally important is accessibility. Websites today must be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. This involves readable fonts, proper color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and more.
Accessibility isn't optional anymore—it’s essential.
9. API-First Development Speeds Up Innovation
APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are the backbone of modern web development. They allow different platforms, apps, and services to communicate and work together.
API-first development means building the backend APIs before the frontend interface. This approach makes it easier to scale, integrate, and reuse components.
By 2025, businesses that want to stay agile are increasingly adopting API-first strategies to ensure faster rollouts and greater flexibility.
10. Personalized Web Experiences Driven by Data
Personalization isn’t just about calling users by their first names anymore. In 2025, websites are using real-time data, user behavior, and past interactions to create tailored experiences.
Examples of personalization include:
Dynamic content based on location
Custom product recommendations
Behavior-based notifications
Content layout changes based on device type or user segment
Personalization increases engagement, reduces bounce rates, and ultimately drives conversions. But it must be done ethically and transparently, with user privacy in mind.
11. Sustainable Web Development Practices
As climate awareness grows, developers are also contributing to greener internet practices. Sustainable web development is about building websites that use fewer server resources, load faster, and consume less energy.
Tips for a more eco-friendly website:
Optimize images and assets
Use green hosting providers
Minimize code bloat
Use caching efficiently
In 2025, environmental responsibility is becoming a web standard, not just a branding effort.
12. Multi-Experience Development Gains Traction
People interact with digital content across devices—smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smart TVs, and even in vehicles. In 2025, multi-experience development means designing for all of them in a seamless, consistent way.
This involves using responsive frameworks, adaptive designs, and voice or gesture-based interfaces to reach users wherever they are.
The challenge? Maintaining consistency and quality across platforms while ensuring a great user experience.
Conclusion: The Future is Now, and It’s Built on Innovation
The web development landscape in 2025 is dynamic, user-centric, and powered by intelligent technology. Whether it’s through AI, voice search, or immersive user experiences, the focus is clear—building faster, smarter, and more personalized web solutions.
For businesses, this means embracing change, experimenting with new technologies, and most importantly, understanding what your users need. For developers, it’s about staying sharp, continuously learning, and building responsibly.
At CyferViz Softwares, we keep a close watch on these trends to help our clients stay ahead in a competitive digital world. Our approach blends creativity with technical precision, delivering solutions that are not only future-ready but also user-first.
If you're looking to upgrade your website or start a new digital project, now’s the perfect time to take advantage of where the web is headed.
