The worst thing about making new friends is getting into situations where I am meeting someone and get embarrassed about my job. trying not to think about how the publishing market in australia is dead for fantasy novels and to get sales i should submit the manuscript to a british/american agent but if thats the case what the fuck is the point of me doing uni in aus and trying to network and if it gets good sales on the other side of the world how the fuck am i even gonna interact with it or help promote it when i live in AUSTRALIA

i keep hmming and hawing over if i wanna keep doing artist alleys but i see the backpacks of weeb teens these days and it's all REALLY professional looking. and i know it's specifically artist alley merch because it's all heart badges and bunnyboy charms and tsum tsum knockoffs

#god I’m so fucking bitter abt life rn#got an email from my university’s graduate school that was all ‘thank you grad students you are the backbone of our university’#and all I could think was ‘yes we fucking know. we’ve been saying this. pay us more’#it’s genuinely not the grad school’s fault. they’ve actually been really helpful to our cause#like they commissioned a study a year or two ago that found grad students here are criminally underpaid compared to peer institutions#(as in they’d need to raise our wages by 25% to be competitive. as I said. CRIMINALLY underpaid)#and they have been advocating for us to the board of governors and whatnot using this study as evidence#so I’m not actually mad at the grad school. it’s the university in general#all they do is say ‘grad students are key to our institution’s success’ like yes we know we’re just cheap labor#we teach like 60% of undergrad classes bc we’re cheaper than tenured faculty#I read this article that interviewed a bunch of NTT faculty at my school and they were like ‘yeah we get paid like $50-60k and can’t survive#on that in this VERY EXPENSIVE housing market’#and I was like ‘well damn then I will no longer feel like my inability to survive on $30k is a personal failing’#I’m at my fucking breaking point. I just need a new job#and I’ve been applying like crazy and all I’ve heard back from anyone was two rejections#I’m sure it’ll work out but it’s very hard to see that rn

#auguste speaks#auguste vents#listen academia is great in many ways#but I hate that it has become harder and harder for young people to become academics#you barely get any funding (especially in humanities bc it’s often considered unimportant’’)#you have to pass through countless of revisions just to get your project approved#and you’re not even guaranteed to pursue your education or get a job after you graduate#the market is so competitive some universities have become renowned for being toxic and insufferable#the pressure to publish is incredibly high (publish or perish they say)#i would never dream of quitting but goddamn is it discouraging at times

I find it extremely funny when my workplace takes advantage of me and my personal time because (1) you guys are seriously underestimating how much I prioritize my dog, her well-being, and my time with her and (2) y’all seriously overestimate the benefits I reap by working here.
Like, feel free to fuck around and find out but I will be gone in a flash.
#let me be clear this job is 100x better than my last one but I am still lukewarm on it at best#the pay is mediocre. I know especially in this market I can find better pay doing a similar job elsewhere#even though I could do most of my job remote my works culture is pretty hostile to allowing employees to work remote at all#the culture of the agency is not a good fit for me in genera#and the lead time to hire someone to my agency is at least 3 months due to the extensive testing and hiring process#and it is expensive for the agency too#so you’d think they’d really be smarter about retaining people#recruiting and retention is a massive issue for my workplace and the leaders are trying to figure out why#like it’s not rocket science. y’all aren’t competitive with what you offer in this job market and you ask too much of your employees#rant!

ive been playing the sims 3 again and it annoys me so much how much worse ts4 truly is lol
#i dont really care for the open world but the gameplay is just a million times more extensive#also i think what truly separates ts4 from the rest is that you dont have to micromanage everything#like in ts3 and ts3 your sim will lose a job or die or get a crush or something out of nowhere the element of chance made it so fun#whereas in ts4 all of those things have to be active choices#ts4's faults go beyond the lack of lore and the shallow moneygrab dlcs it just has no personality to it#even if paralives ends up sucking ill be sooo grateful that there will be actual competition in the market maybe ea will step up their game#personal#sims

The Ministry of Labour (MoL) in Qatar seeks innovative solutions to digitize and optimize the certification attestation process across governmental entities, aiming for automation, minimal human intervention and errors, efficient timeframes, enhanced security, and an improved experience.
The initial focus is on proof of concept for degrees awarded within Qatar, with potential for future expansion to externally awarded degrees.

Universities and higher educational institutions play a vital role in creating opportunities and fostering economic growth in Qatar by providing skilled individuals who meet job market requirements. The current manual verification process of qualification certificates poses challenges in terms of number of personnel and processing time required.
The legacy system used by universities and government entities for the issuance, verification, traceability, and provenance of degrees and certificates is semiautomated, costly, time-consuming, complicated and prone to human error.
The degree attestation process can easily be forged, and fake degrees can be illegitimately verified through the existing system. Blockchain technology serves various potential advantages in higher education, learning, and development, such as enabling students’ certifications to be quickly attested and easily verified securely.
They could also allow to quickly analyze and identify forge proof versions, as well as guarantee the secrecy and integrity of their mark certificates. The main motivation behind this project is to address the issues and challenges of degree attestation and verification in Qatar using blockchain technology.
Submissions to this Challenge must be received by Nov 30, 2023.

#Chicago my beloved#time for my annual promotion post for Chicago#some reasons you should move to Chicago:#you get a big city experience for cheaper than most cities (big and medium sized!!!#it’s cheaper to live here than NYC; LA; SFO; SLC; pretty much anywhere on the coast)#pristine beautiful lake that is one of the largest in the world#it’s like a mini-ocean with miles and miles of clean public beaches#you’re never more than a 10 minute walk from a public park or a 15 minute walk from a public library#competitive and expanding job market—lots of companies are making Chicago a hub because we’re centrally located and have the infrastructure#enshrined civil rights like marriage; abortion; gender affirming care; etc#it’s through the whole state but Chicago is the best part#strong union culture AND protected union rights#democratic stronghold for over 100 years#great public transportation (though admittedly we can improve)#affordable housing compared to all major and most medium cities!#177 distinct and interesting neighborhoods—the city is more than the loop and you’ll find when you live here#the loop is the least interesting part of the city!!!#immensely walkable—most places/neighborhoods have walking scores in the 90s#Midwest nice: people are friendly and helpful to their neighbors and acquaintances#and lots of local bars and restaurants love their regulars#ALLEYWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you don’t realize how key this is until you visit NYC or LA in the summer#both of those cities smell like boiling trash and are covered in garbage#Chicago has alleyways which take care of the garbage and help keep the streets clean#around 30% of people in Chicago don’t even own cars#anyway that’s just a few reasons I love my city and if you’re thinking of moving; move here#we’re friendly; we’re pretty liberal; we have a beautiful city and we work hard to make life better#Chicago#also because I feel this is fairly representative of the city: my fav local yarn store is by an insect museum; an LGBTQ+ game store &#a vintage bowling alley
