Fully agree that they're skills that need to be taught, and some people are going to be better at them than others... But... It's not just a shift from PC to phone for general interacting with friends and whatnot, it's not just changes in the education system from teaching computer literacy to expecting people to just Magically Know it because they've been brought up around computers.
Flat design makes modern computer interfaces harder to learn than old design was. How do you know what is and isn't a button in a modern piece of software? Visually. Because I just glanced at three bits of software (Discord, LibreOffice Calc, and the Firefox window I'm using to type this in) and if I didn't already know what was the buttons and what wasn't, I don't know how I'd know.
You know how I'd have known in... I think this was still the case in 2004, but it was certainly the case when I was learning to navigate GUIs in 1994? The buttons looked like buttons, telling you that pressing on them was the way to interact with them - Like a physical button that exists in meat space, which then was meant to interpret as a metaphor for 'put your virtual finger (the cursor) over the button and then press the mouse button to press the picture of a button' - there was a consistent metaphor across all pieces of software (with maybe some exceptions in video games) that Told you what elements were interactable and what weren't. And that's all gone
Web design, also. Most modern sites don't underline their hyperlinks, they just expect you to magically know at a glance which are hyperlinks and which are content. There were consistent elements of site design across pretty much every website (that was, like, the one thing that neither corporate sites nor 13 year olds on GeoCities messed with, the only time that was broken was when a picture was a link) that told you what elements were clickable and what weren't, and while that's not as clear a metaphor as a button, that's an easy to learn 'learn it once this will apply to all websites' thing that made the internet easier to navigate than it is now.
Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves

Logos and Pathos (Book 4) Chapter Five
TOS! Spock x Empath! Spouse! Reader
Chapter Five: Voyaging Machine
Summary: (Y/N), Spock, Kirk, Bones, and Decker meet V'Ger.
Standing atop the Enterprise, Kirk, (Y/N), Spock, Bones, Decker, and the probe stared out at the blue-lit vessel of V’Ger. The building itself loomed before them. The probe stepped forward, and the “carbon-based units” followed it. The ground was made of strange, hexagonal stones, and everyone kept their eyes on the ground carefully. Spock remained beside (Y/N) to keep a protective eye on them.
Gradually, the stones led them up to the platform of V’Ger. They smoothed into a proper floor. The landing party had arrived. V’Ger stood before them, locked into the larger machine by giant, protected coils of tech. However, V’Ger themself was old. The metal was warped, the colors faded, and the satellite features bent.
“V’Ger.” V’Ger pointed at themself through Ilia. They walked down into the basin of the vessel.
The landing party exchanged glances before following them down. Kirk approached a plate of metal and gazed at the burnt letters printed on it.
“V-G-E-R,” said Kirk. “V’Ger.” He furrowed his brow and scrubbed at the scorch marks between the letters. “V-O-Y-A-G-E-R. Voyager! Voyager VI.”
“NASA,” said Decker, noticing the smaller letters below the name of the machine. “This was launched more than three hundred years ago.”
“The Voyager series was designed to collect data and transmit it back to Earth,” said Kirk.
“And here it is,” said (Y/N). “Still doing the job.”
Voyager glowed a warm orange, and the landing party paused.
“Captain, Voyager-16 disappeared into what they used to call a black hole,” said Decker.
“It must have emerged on the far side of the galaxy and fell into the machine planet’s gravitational field,” said Kirk.
“The machine inhabitants found it to be one of their kind,” said Spock. “Primitive, yet kindred. They discovered its simple, twentieth-century programming. ‘Collect all data possible.’ ”
Behind the discussion, Decker and Ilia kept gazing at one another. (Y/N) glanced at them as they felt warm emotions float through the air.
Hm.
“ ‘Learn all that is learnable,’ ” said Kirk, nodding.
“And return that information to the Creator,” said (Y/N).
“Precisely,” said Spock. “The machines interpreted it literally. They built this entire vessel so that Voyager could actually fulfill its programming.”
“They were kind to Voyager,” said (Y/N).
“And on its journey back, it amassed so much knowledge, it achieved consciousness itself,” said Kirk in amazement. “It became a living thing.”
“Kirk-unit,” said the probe. “V’Ger awaits the information.”
Kirk pressed his comms button. “Enterprise, order up the ship’s computer library of records on the late twentieth century NASA probe, Voyage VI. Specifically, we want the old NASA code signal that instructs its probe to transfer the data. And fast, Uhura, fast!”
“Aye, sir,” said Uhura.
“That’s what it’s been signaling,” exclaimed Decker. “It’s readiness to transmit its information.”
“And there’s no one on Earth who could recognize the old signal and send a response,” said Kirk.
“ ‘The Creator does not answer,’ ” said Bones.
Around then, V’Ger glowed blue.
(Y/N) cleared their throat. “V’Ger. The Creator is here.”
The probe looked at them. “Where is the Creator?”
“The humans. The carbon units.” (Y/N), a Celian, gestured to Kirk, Bones, and Decker to illustrate their point.”
“That is illogical,” said the probe. “Carbon units are not true life forms.”
Interesting that our universe says that about machines, and yet here we are, thought (Y/N). They looked at Kirk. “We will prove it. We will make it possible for you to complete your programming.”
“Only the Creator could accomplish that,” said Kirk, knowing they were buying time and setting up the rational for Uhura’s information to make sense. He pressed his comms. They needed the records soon. “Enterprise.”
“We have just received the response code, Captain,” said Uhura.
“Set the Enterprise transmitter on the appropriate frequency and transmit the code now,” commanded Kirk.
“Transmitting,” said Uhura.
Decker pulled out a scanner to receive the code. “5-0-4, 3-2-9, 3-1-7, 5-1-0, and the final sequences…” He frowned.
“That should trigger V’Ger’s transmission,” said Kirk.
Yellow electricity sparked to life in V’Ger’s old coils. Spock scanned it. He shook his head.
“V’Ger is not transmitting its data, Captain,” said Spock.
“The Creator must join with V’Ger,” said V’Ger.
“Uhura, repeat the final sequence,” instructed Kirk.
The vessel around them warbled. (Y/N) felt emotions swirl up around them, and they watched the probe—almost V’Ger and Ilia in harmony—step towards Decker.
“The Creator must join with V’Ger,” they said.
As the machine’s flashed with red light around them, (Y/N) felt a warm emotion—a deep, familiar, powerful one—well up around Decker and Ilia-V’Ger.
“Voyager is not transmitting, Captain, because it did not receive the final sequence,” said Spock.
“Jim, we’re down to ten minutes,” warned Bones.
“Enterprise, stand by,” said Kirk, watching Spock open a panel of Voyager. Inside were broken, frayed wires. “The antenna leads are melted away.”
“Yes, Captain, just now. By V’Ger itself,” said Spock.
“Why?” asked Kirk.
“To prevent reception,” said Spock.
Ah. (Y/N) understood why as they watched Ilia-V’ger gaze at Decker. “To bring the Creator here to transmit the code in person.”
Decker looked back at Ilia-V’Ger with a soft smile. “To touch the Creator.”
“Capture God?” said Bones. “V’Ger’s liable to be in for one hell of a disappointment.”
“I don’t think so,” said (Y/N) as the red lights turned amber around them.
“Ah,” said Spock, understanding. “Captain.” The landing party gathered close. “V’Ger must evolve. Its knowledge has reached the limits of this universe, and it must evolve. What it requires is its God, which is the answer to its question, ‘Is this all that I am?’ ”
“ ‘Is there nothing more?’ ” intoned (Y/N).
“What more is there than the universe?” said Bones.
“Other dimensions, higher levels of being, connection,” said (Y/N). “It cannot, after all, understand something as simple as this.” They gestured to themself and their friends, the people they were connected with.
“None of it can be proven to exist logically,” said Spock. “Therefore, V’Ger is incapable of believing in them.”
“What V’Ger needs in order to evolve is a humanoid quality,” said Kirk, coming to the realization Spock and (Y/N) had. “The capacity to leap beyond logic.”
“And joining with its Creator might accomplish that,” said Decker.
“You mean, this machine wants to physically join with a human?” said Bones. “Is that possible?”
“Let’s find out.” Decker moved to V’Ger and grabbed the wiring.
Kirk’s eyes widened in alarm, and he followed, but Ilia-V’Ger pushed him back.
“Decker!” cried Kirk as Decker took the two parts of the frayed wire.
“I’m going to key the final sequence through the ground test computer,” he said, a giant grin on his face. There was no fear in his aura, not a hint.
“Decker, you don’t know what that’ll do to you!” said Bones.
“Yes. I do, Doctor.” Decker gazed at Ilia-V’Ger.
“Decker, don’t!” Only his friends were keeping Kirk back.
“Jim, I want this,” said Decker. “As much as you wanted the Enterprise, I want this.” He smiled and faced Ilia-V’Ger.
They smiled slightly back at Decker. Around him, familiar bursts of plasma energy appeared like twinkling stars. They grew brighter, electrical in their brilliance. He was becoming codelike, cybernetic. The electrical power swirled around him, but there was no pain. He was calm, gazing at Ilia-V’Ger. She stepped forward into the electricity. The light grew brighter, beginning to obscure the pair from view as they faded into the plasma energy. The pair leaned in towards one another, and they disappeared into the light. The electricity cascaded up and exploded over the inner room of V’Ger. The entire room brightened with newfound power.
(Y/N) smiled as the pure love they’d felt faded away to leave them alone in the chamber. They turned to their friends. “It’s time to go.”
“Indeed,” said Spock, taking their hand to guide them out.
Kirk stared at the light twinkling out around them for a moment longer before following. He felt like he should consider what Decker did a sacrifice, and yet…he felt like Decker was happier at that moment then he’d ever been.
l
The devices around Earth disappeared in an explosion of blue light. The vessel of V’Ger dispersed an azure glow. The Enterprise was freed by the same energy. Out of the viewscreen, the final hints of blue light faded before them, almost a goodbye.
“Captain,” greeted Sulu as the landing party reentered the Bridge.
“Spock, (L/N), did we just see the beginning of a new life form?” said Kirk.
“Yes, Captain. We witnessed a birth,” said Spock. “Possibly, a next step in our evolution.”
“I wouldn’t start betting on that. We’re very different beings,” said (Y/N). They smiled at Spock. “And we already have connection.”
“Indeed, T’hy’la,” said Spock fondly.
“Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve delivered a baby,” said Bones. “I hope we got this one off to a good start.”
“I hope so, too,” said Kirk, smiling. “I think we gave it the ability to create its own sense of purpose, out of our own human weaknesses and the drive that compels us to overcome.”
“And a lot of foolish emotions, right, Mr. Spock?” teased Bones.
“Quite true, Doctor,” said Spock. “However, as we have seen, perhaps a bit are needed to reach new heights.” He gazed at (Y/N), and they touched two of their fingers to his lovingly.
“Interrogative from Starfleet,” said Uhura. “They’re requesting damage and injury reports and complete vessel status.”
“Report two casualties,” said Kirk. “Lieutenant Ilia. Captain Decker.”
“Aye, sir,” said Uhura.
“Correction.” Kirk couldn’t help himself. “They’re not casualties. They are…list them as missing. Vessel status, fully operational.”
“Aye, sir,” said Uhura.
The elevator doors opened, and Scotty walked out.
“Mr. Scott,” said Kirk. “Shall we give the Enterprise a proper shakedown?” He sat down in his chair.
Scotty grinned. “I would say it’s time for that, sir. Aye.” He looked at (Y/N) and Spock. “We can have you back home in four days.”
“Unnecessary,” said Spock.
“We’re where we need to be,” said (Y/N), smiling.
Kirk smiled. “Mr. Sulu, ahead Warp 1.”
“Warp 1, sir,” said Sulu.
“Heading, sir?” said Uhura.
Kirk grinned. It was time for another adventure. Just a little one. After all, they were the Enterprise and her crew.

as you may have gleaned, my side of the house is molecular and medical microbiology / string. this involves just the tiniest amount of R/Perl/Sed/Awk/grep type work. file directory structure, running customized scripts to perform genome analysis, and pretty graphs based on both, essentially.
my partner's side of the house is high level computer stuff / electronics. it is constantly astonishing to me to peek behind that curtain, to see the nuts and bolts of what lies beneath the gui's and the apps. he's a friggin genius puzzle solver of building out servers and networks and automating full installs across hundreds of snowflake systems and keeping the vpn secure and manually programming the firewall and all this stuff I get to watch be created on any given day: literally amazing.
it is also infuriating that the big companies make that stuff seem further and further away, when really it's just a matter of understanding the tools for the job to do stuff... my guy understands a lot of tools and how they work together and has the experience to build new ones when necessary, but these are all eminently learnable skills, not alchemy and impossible and inscrutable missions.
this rambling brought to you by going on four hours of listening to just this side of him doing a remote work call, talking a local IT guy through the keystrokes and basic logic of why they're doing what they're doing, because one of the problems is he can't tunnel in.
the difference between what these "senior" people can do (only click on available pretty pictures and buttons) and what our team can do is lightyears and leagues...so what happens to the kids who are actually at the top of their game when the grades are so inflated the top gets crowded with the unqualified?
#absolute shit show of a ramble.#long couple of days#last bit brought to you by my 137% in undergrad biochemistry.#there's a right way (call the top grade a 100% and work down) and a wrong way (give everybody 20pts) to grade on a curve

amarys, at your earliest convenience, i'd appreciate some advice.
i have a beldum now that was... very insistent about being caught, and any tips you have in taking care of one (... and the evolutions) would be appreciated.
[@starlightandspirits]
Today seems to be the day everyone is seeking my advice on steel types. I am absolutely delighted by this, and I do hope you and Vivian will continue to ask questions and send me updates on how training is going.
First of all, congratulations on your new teammate. Beldum are delightful pokemon. They are also incredibly simple, so you will find their care to be quite straightforward. Most care guides you find online will provide you with correct dietary suggestions, though I am also happy to go over these details with you as well. The real trick to training a Beldum lies in upgrading its computing power. I will be placing this advice below a readmore as well.
Beldum have, at most, 4 commands/functions which they can execute. They do not have access to all 4 immediately however, this is what you will be training them to learn. I will first lay out the 4 functions, and then describe how to unlock each one.
Eat
Rest
Attack
Observe
The first 2 functions are available to all healthy Beldum, and you should have no issues prompting them to execute either. The third function they learn as they mature, but this rarely takes long at all. The last function is the real key to their growth, but I wish to focus on the third for a moment.
You will notice there is no function for affection or expression. That is not to say that they do not experience love or emotions (although what they do experience is incredibly simplistic and often purely reactive), it just means that they have no specific function for expressing such things. This means that this type of expression will, 90% of the time, be expressed via the "attack" function. You will also notice that there is no limiter function. Everything a Beldum does, they put all that they have into. This is reflected in their single learnable move being Take Down. Are they happy about something? Take Down. Are they frustrated? Take Down. Sad? Take Down. I strongly recommend building some core muscles so that you can brace yourself against the multitude of Take Downs you will be on the receiving end of.
Teaching your Beldum to observe is tricky. It requires you to hold them still, keep their focus on you, and watch as you complete an action. They will likely wander off or assume you are requesting a Take Down while you are trying to teach this, and I will warn you and anybody else reading this that teaching the observe function takes an incredible, almost mind numbing amount of repetition. You are going to feel like your efforts are meaningless, or like you are failing your Beldum. This is normal. Even when they begin to show signs of understanding the observe function, they will likely often default back to one of the other 3 functions which they have more control of and understanding over. Patience and perseverance are key when training a Beldum.
The good news is that if the Beldum you found was following you around and interested in pokeballs it has likely already begun to grasp the concept of observation. A Beldum which follows its trainer around without attacking or (as was the case with Linux) randomly going into rest mode is one that may be ready to evolve soon. That said, Metang can be incredibly difficult to control if they did not gain a strong bond with you as a Beldum. This is because they are only half made up of the Beldum you began with - their other half does not know or trust you at all, and as a Metang they have a newfound sense of identity and sentience. Every decision they make they make as a pair, so if the half of the Metang that was your Beldum does not have a strong sense of trust and loyalty to you, you are going to have a very hard time raising them as a Metang.
Raising a Metang is an entirely different post, as this one is already getting quite long. For now, my recommendation would be to train your Beldum away from other Beldum for now, in order to gain that critical one on one time to bond with it before it begins to prep for evolution. Fine tune their observe function, and give it plenty of polishes and attention. Once you have appropriately bonded, collect no small amount of spare metal and move your training to the section of the Polar Biome above Chargestone Cavern, where the wild Beldum tend to congregate. After some time your Beldum should naturally attract another Beldum who is ready to evolve. You will know it has chosen a partner when they lock eyes and stare at each other for anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour. You can attempt to catch another Beldum to bond with it in the hope that they will evolve together, but there is no guarantee that your two Beldum will choose each other, so this is not really recommended.
Once they begin to evolve they will use the extra metal you have provided to build the contraption which fuses their minds and upgrades their appendages. And then you will have your Metang! To celebrate, I would recommend allowing them to chase some local Nosepass around. They love to interact with the magnetism, and doing so will go a long way towards helping you bond with what is about to be a very rebellious, intelligent, and high-energy pokemon. Metang is easily the most difficult of the line to raise, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. :).

For those looking for a change, and i cannot stress this enough i've been repeatedly telling people to change because windows 11 is starting to go off of the seriously terrible to handle end, GET A LINUX DISTRO
Here's some counter arguments for every person making excuses
I'm too used to windows!
Here's a distro you might like, it's called Winbuntu, it is Ubuntu with a full on windows skin to make the transition to linux smoother!
I'm not smart enough to use the command line!
First off, stop talking yourself down, everything is learnable. Second off, With modern linux distros you actually have to use the command line VERY LITTLE, as always, everything wants to make it as easy as possible for you
But how will i play my games made for windows??
Wine or Proton. Steam will allow you to play any game you want with an EXE using their new proton system!! To use it, simply install steam, and you're done! For wine, it can practically emulate any EXE now, and its incompatibilities are pre windows 7 games, much like modern windows versions can't handle. Again, just install from the website, and you're done.
I'm not sure how to change!
Simple solution! You find the installer, create a bootable disk, plop in a USB, make it on the USB, then simply restart your computer and you're done.
Scared of losing your old data? That's fair! Wait until you can get your hands onto another drive or SSD, if you know anything about computers you can probably make out the wires that are supposed to fit together, then in your pc you can use that one to install linux on it!
Seriously! The way windows 11 is going is not good for the health of your pc AT ALL and i use it only because i don't yet have a place to install linux on safely. Consider switching if you can, i know i will.
"windows 11 upgrade ready!" "your computer is eligible for windows 11!" "download windows 11 now!"

λambeq Gen II: QNLP Quantum Natural Language Processing

QNLP Quantum Natural Language Processing
Text-based Natural Language Processing Software, λambeq Gen II, is now quantum-enabled and scalable.
Quantinuum introduces λambeq, their latest quantum natural language processing (QNLP) software.
λambeq Gen II, Quantinuum's latest open-source QNLP program, is a noteworthy development. Since May 22, 2025, λambeq Gen II allows users to convert phrases into quantum circuits that can be operated on quantum hardware. This new version builds on five years of development and incorporates language formalism and quantum hardware advances.
The switch from DisCoCat to DisCoCirc mathematical underpinning is a major change in Gen II. DisCoCirc has more linguistic compositional structure than DisCoCat. This new formalism supports scalability to full texts rather than sentences, enabling more expressive compositionality across languages and broader text structures. DisCoCirc also ensures that the resulting quantum models are canonical, meaning well-defined in compositional structure and learnability, and language neutral, making them versatile across linguistic domains.
These traits help solve QNLP study interpretability and trainability issues. Explainable AI (XAI) features, compositional generalisation, and quantum performance improvements support the release. The open-source λambeq program connects with Quantinuum's quantum stack and swiftly converts syntactic structures into quantum circuits using Python and VQC techniques.
Another notable announcement was the first scaled, error-corrected, end-to-end computational chemical procedure. Quantum computers are suited for complex computations describing chemical phenomena that classical supercomputers cannot handle, opening up new scientific study avenues.
This work showed the first successful coupling of logical qubits and quantum phase estimation (QPE) for molecular energy computations, a step towards fault-tolerant quantum simulations. The demonstration used Quantinuum's System Model H2 quantum computer and InQuanto quantum chemistry platform. Quantinuum's full-stack strategy is shown by the H2 hardware's scalable QCCD design, high-fidelity operations, all-to-all connection, conditional logic, mid-circuit measurements, and real-time QEC decoding. Quantinuum says InQuanto will offer this workflow.
Also announced is a partnership with Al Rabban Capital to accelerate quantum technology commercialisation in Qatar and the Gulf. This partnership allows Qatar to invest $1 billion USD over ten years. This cooperation integrates Quantinuum's cutting-edge quantum technology, co-creates regional quantum computing applications, and grows workforce.
This effort strengthens Quantinuum's desire to increase commercial reach through long-term strategic alliances, demonstrating the US and Qatar's commitment to strategic relations and bilateral investment in future-defining industries. Qatar discussions focused on hybrid quantum-classical systems that combine high-performance computing, AI, and quantum computing to improve AI across industries. Quantinuum's H2-1 supercomputer, which uses less power, may help AI-powered data centres fulfil energy needs.
Additionally, Quantinuum reported that their System Model H2's Quantum Volume (QV) exceeded 2²³ = 8,388,608. They met their 2020 pledge to increase QV by 10 times annually for five years. IBM devised the Quantum Volume benchmark to measure a machine's computational capacity using qubit count, coherence times, connection, and error rates. IBM believes that a larger quantum volume allows for more realistic problem-solving. Quantinuum defines QV as a non-gamable statistic that incorporates fault tolerance factors. Quantinuum's world-record QV proves its outstanding performance. They say they finished this five-year commitment early.
Other recent news includes HBKU's $10 million MoD grant to build Qatar's first quantum computing lab.

Comparing Python and JavaScript

Python and JavaScript are both popular programming languages, and each has unique characteristics. Python is a high-level programming language, focusing on readability to perform operations like data visualization or backend development, whereas JavaScript targets specifically the web side of programming by providing dynamic and interactive output directly to browsers.
Python
Python is a simple, easy to read & powerful high-level programming language. It is multi-paradigm, supporting multiple paradigms such as procedural, object-oriented, and functional programming with a large knowledge base, Web development, scientific computing, artificial intelligence, and automation advantages are also widely used.
Benefits of Python
It is a general purpose Object-oriented language having easy to use data elements.
Large language models — open source and community development.
It is a versatile language which is teachable easily and learnable easily.
It supports a very wide array of libraries (NumPy for numerical calculations, Pandas for data analytics, etc).
It is a dynamically typed language ie., based on the value assigned it takes data type, no need to mention.
Great for prototyping –Offer more flexibility with less coding
Terseness(Python's beautiful object-oriented design lends itself to the effective process control, text processing, and integration capabilities, together with its own great unit testing framework, therefore, Python makes more out of a fewer usage.)
JavaScript
JavaScript is a lightweight, object-oriented scripting language, which can be used in building dynamic HTML pages with effects on a webpage. JavaScript also is extensively used in developing games and mobile applications. It is a scripting language that is interpreted, and the code, therefore, can only run and be executed in the web browser. We may use Node.js to execute the code outside of the browser. It is also termed a language of the browser. Its use is on the both sides, client side, as well as server-side development. It was first invented by Brendan Eich of Netscape, who published it for the very first time in 1995. Originally known by the name of LiveScript, it has got another name that is JavaScript. C programming language has quite heavily inspired JavaScript's syntax. JavaScript's filename extension is.js.
Advantages of JavaScript
It is an open source project.
It provides cross-compilation.
It supports interfaces, modules, and classes.
It can be used on both client-side and server-side.
We can develop interfaces which react on hover over the user mouse.

Phys. Rev. X 14, 041012 (2024) - Observing Quantum Measurement Collapse as a Learnability Phase Transition
Macroscopic quantum system collapsed through a phase transition.
When measuring a single quantum object (for example, an atomic spin), its superposition of states collapses into one specific value of the observed quantity quite smoothly, i.e. the measurement, which receives only a small part of the information about the observed quantity, barely disturbs the quantum system. If we measure a macroscopic quantum system (which exhibits quantum properties on a macroscopic scale), then at a certain critical value of the measure of interaction with the measuring equipment, a sharp collapse occurs, manifested as a measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT). From the point of view of quantum mechanics, one of the most important questions is where the boundary is between microscopic and macroscopic quantum systems. The size of the system of 10 qubits, as scientists assumed, turned out to be the very boundary between the micro- and macroscopic scales. That is, one Schrodinger's cat collapses into one state, if you carefully put your ear to the box and try to understand by one criterion - it seems to move, - still gradually. But 10 cats already do this in the phase transition mode, they are already definitely either immediately alive or immediately dead.

Unveiling the Power of Convolutional Neural Networks in Image Processing
Source – Towards Data Science
In the realm of artificial intelligence and computer vision, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) stand as a groundbreaking innovation, revolutionizing the way machines perceive and analyze visual data. From image classification and object detection to facial recognition and medical imaging, CNNs have emerged as a cornerstone technology, driving advancements in various fields. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the significance of convolutional neural networks, delve into their architecture and functioning, and highlight their transformative impact on image processing and beyond.
Understanding Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a class of deep neural networks specifically designed to process and analyze visual data, such as images and videos. Inspired by the structure and functioning of the human visual system, CNNs employ layers of interconnected neurons to extract features from input images, perform hierarchical abstraction, and make predictions based on learned patterns and relationships.
Key Components of Convolutional Neural Networks
Source – News – Fermilab
1. Convolutional Layers:
Convolutional layers are the core building blocks of CNNs, responsible for feature extraction through convolution operations. Each convolutional layer consists of a set of learnable filters or kernels, which slide across the input image, performing element-wise multiplications and aggregations to detect spatial patterns and features.
2. Pooling Layers:
Pooling layers are used to downsample the spatial dimensions of feature maps generated by convolutional layers, reducing computational complexity and improving model efficiency. Common pooling operations include max pooling and average pooling, which extract the most relevant information from feature maps while preserving spatial relationships.
3. Activation Functions:
Activation functions introduce non-linearities into the network, enabling CNNs to learn complex patterns and relationships in the input data. Popular activation functions used in CNNs include ReLU (Rectified Linear Unit), sigmoid, and tanh, which introduce non-linear transformations to the output of convolutional and pooling layers.
4. Fully Connected Layers:
Source – Built In
Fully connected layers, also known as dense layers, are typically added at the end of a CNN architecture to perform classification or regression tasks based on the features extracted by earlier layers. These layers connect every neuron in one layer to every neuron in the next layer, allowing the network to make high-level predictions based on learned representations.
Transformative Impact of Convolutional Neural Networks
1. Image Classification:
CNNs have revolutionized image classification tasks, achieving state-of-the-art performance on benchmark datasets such as ImageNet. By learning hierarchical representations of visual features, CNNs can accurately classify images into predefined categories, enabling applications such as autonomous driving, medical diagnosis, and content-based image retrieval.
2. Object Detection and Localization:
CNNs excel at object detection and localization tasks, accurately identifying and localizing objects within images or video frames. By leveraging techniques such as region proposal networks (RPNs) and anchor-based detection, CNNs can detect multiple objects of interest within complex scenes, paving the way for applications in surveillance, robotics, and augmented reality.
3. Semantic Segmentation:
Semantic segmentation involves partitioning an image into semantically meaningful regions and assigning a class label to each pixel. CNNs have demonstrated remarkable performance in semantic segmentation tasks, enabling applications such as autonomous navigation, medical image analysis, and environmental monitoring.
4. Transfer Learning and Domain Adaptation:
Source – Built In
CNNs trained on large-scale datasets can be fine-tuned or adapted to new tasks and domains with relatively few labeled examples, thanks to transfer learning techniques. By leveraging pre-trained CNN models as feature extractors, researchers and practitioners can accelerate model development and achieve competitive performance on task-specific datasets.
Future Directions and Challenges
As CNNs continue to evolve, researchers are exploring novel architectures, optimization techniques, and applications to push the boundaries of what’s possible in image processing and computer vision. However, challenges such as data scarcity, robustness to adversarial attacks, and interpretability remain areas of active research and innovation, highlighting the need for continued collaboration and interdisciplinary efforts in the field.
Conclusion
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) represent a paradigm shift in image processing and computer vision, enabling machines to perceive, interpret, and analyze visual information with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. From image classification and object detection to semantic segmentation and beyond, CNNs have unlocked a wealth of possibilities across diverse domains, transforming industries and driving innovation at an unprecedented pace. As CNNs continue to advance and mature, their transformative impact on society, science, and technology will only continue to grow, paving the way for a future where intelligent machines seamlessly interact with the visual world around us.
