I saw your post where you mentioned the CubeODE and while researching it I found the FlippyDrive. I'm thinking of holding out on getting the CubeODE and wait for the FlippyDrive since it keeps the optical drive. What are your thoughts?

The FlippyDrive looks awesome! If you have a working optical drive, and are willing to wait then I’d absolutely wait for a FlippyDrive.

I got my GameCube for free because the optical drive was broken, and that’s why I went with a CubeODE personally. If I had a working optical drive then I would have waited for the FlippyDrive to be available.

Anyone out there who would be interested in a console hacking, modding, and homebrew community? I've been modding consoles for 2 years. I originally was gonna make a Wii U one but I want to include as many people and consoles as I can! I'm looking for people who may be interested.

Little piece of advice for those getting into 3DS modding as someone who’s still learning the ins and outs: if you downloaded the streetpass Mii plaza dlc from the hshop, DO NOT open the eshop or use pretendo to switch accounts. This essentially will delete all of your dlc for the Mii plaza because it realizes the ticket is fake upon reloading.

It hasn’t deleted the game’s data for me personally (yet)- just the games themselves- but I have heard of people’s game data getting wiped. I’ve also heard this happen to other dlcs that aren’t for the Mii plaza. Just stay away from the eshop. If you desperately want to play online and don’t have any important dlcs you wanna save, use pretendo with caution.

my flippydrive finally arrived today, so it was time to tear down my gamecube

the install was simultaneously more and less fiddly than i was expecting.

the main issue i had was the locking tab for the flex pcb connection popped off when i was locking it in place. i ended up having to put a piece of tape on the back of the flex pcb to give it enough clamping force to make good contact. the connection seems to be pretty secure now, but i don't want to move or jostle the gamecube very much.

on that note, it leads to my *other* two issues with the flippydrive install process. first, and probably worst, is the tiny screws provided to fix it into the mounting bracket. the bracket is 3D printed, and unthreaded, and i found the tiny screws - even with the correct bit - wanted to strip more than thread themselves into the bracket. this meant the flippydrive board isn't securly fixed to the bracket and can wobble a bit. these two issues make the whole, having to open the whole shell and put pressure directly on the board to access the microSD wayyyy more of a big deal. i ordered the laser bear industries SD slot extender, i wish they offered something like that in the purchasing options for the flippydrive.

as far as the software goes, cubeboot looks excellent. HOWEVER, it does not come pre-configured for region free rom loading. i did not realise this until after reassembling my console. currently i have to use swiss instead to play my ISOs.

now i can play radirgy on 3 different consoles. (i need to get a coin cell battery for the remote of my hdmi converter so i can set it to 4:3 output again)

does anybody with a modded ds with pretendo wanna be friends (on the ds or actual friends i don’t care at this point) my brother won’t let me mod his ds yet because he can’t find the sd card with all his pokemon save data on it so i have nobody to talk about anything with

so with the help of a council of elders (read: three transfems who all volunteered independently to help) i modded my 3DS today, mostly so i could play games i never played since the e-shop was taken offline

and just. god i love the internet

i can go from knowing nothing about console modding to playing kid icarus: uprising for the first time in one evening and that’s just so so cool to me

anyway piracy is preservation and. wow i’m so glad i breathed new life into this thing, this is gonna be so cool

Modding an Old Console: This machine is the beauty of retro gaming and can only improve with just a few screen updates!

Modding a New Nintendo Console: The internal fan needs to be replaced within two to three years or else the system will get so hot it has to shut itself down and might give you a nasty burn and our batteries will swell up so much that the shells of the console will break and if you dare touch the swelled battery it'll spontaneously combust and start a fire and if you're within five feet of it, you WILL lose a limb.

Me: ... So Nintendo is essentially selling you a handheld bomb.

Nintendo Consoles from 2DS to Switch: Pretty much. Also don't sneeze around us or have unpredictable weather or else our screens will be damaged. And it's not our surface screen, it's the internal one that will immediately shatter if there's a warm front.

Me (and I actually had the screen thing happen to me with a 2DS) : WTF, Nintendo?!

Nintendo: And that'll be $300 please.

Having a modded Xbox 360 is cool and stuff unless the only person who knows how to add stuff to it is your stupid older brother who won't talk to you because you didn't play Minecraft with him a few months ago after he sent you a modpack that straight up destroyed your PC and forced you to switch operating systems, so now you can't play a backup of Rayman Legends because the only other copies of the game are either a second-hand PC DVD Rom with a used key or on your brother's Epic Games account haha.
