TOONIZE Commissioned artwork for Dave! She's all ears! It's your favorite fox samurai women, Hoshimi Miyabi and her Bangboo! He requested me to draw Miyabi and Bangboo with their comically long ears! This was challenging but tolerable design I really loved working on it! Here's the funnier story, my big sibling loved Miyabi and became their favorite character in terms of meta and character design type. They, of course, want me to draw her as a commission but this is the sibling went to spend irresponsibly to buy their favorite VTuber Plush. I didn't want to work on it until Dave approach it to commission me. To them, it was a miracle to see it drawn my style. To me? It was nightmare but worth the cash, heh! Heyyy! Hopping into your inbox to continue Hakuoki talk, so we stop spamming poor Rui's unrelated post 😂 (though @ruiniel, if you haven't checked out Hakuoki yet... 1800s Japan, samurai, vampires + demons... just saying...)

The series used to be super popular even outside of Japan but it's died down significantly in the last ten years or so, even with the rerelease/retelling :(

Yes! There are so many different iterations of the game lmao. My favorite is the PS3 release (Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi), which is all of the original game content plus a significant amount of extra scenes in both the general route and for each LI route. I thought the narrative flow and character development was excellent in this and it included lots of slice-of-life moments, plus I'm super nostalgic about it, so I'm very attached XD It's like my "canon" Hakuoki game. I did enjoy the new characters and content that Hakuoki Shinkai brought, though!

(Oof I feel that, both the price and the computer troubles... my own computer is starting to refuse to open anything beyond 6-7 browser tabs and I live in fear every day. I hope you are able to play the games for yourself one day!!!)

On a somewhat related note, are you perhaps familiar with the mobile otome game, Love and Deepspace, by any chance?? Yet again, something out of my own reach... but the gameplay is Something Else and was just imagining a Hakuoki game with that level of interaction and immersion!!

Yes, it really is your last chance now to download, any apps, games and add-on content for the Xbox 360. This final sale is very disappointing it has to be said no more games will be getting their prices cut and next to no DLC has been discounted. So the Koei DLC for games like Samurai Warriors 2 is still very expensive.

What happened to Korean animation???

I can not stress this enough, but what is it with the Korean animation on most Burbank-made cartoons produced after 2015 looking so… slow and stiff???

There're LOTS more on 2s animation timing... and less inbetweening, while characters, props and effects are not as loosely drawn as they used to be before 2016.

Look at this example below of what a modern cartoon looks like when animated in Korea:

Bernard Williams ain't selling the acting well now; is he?

That episode of Craig of the Creek, "Creature Feature", was made in 2020; it was animated by Rough Draft Korea Co., Ltd. — an animation studio founded by Gregg Vanzo as a cheaper means for quality animation on none other than The Ren & Stimpy Show (Don't believe me? Thad Komorowski will tell you).

He's moving too slow. This shot is all on 2s. His arms move stiffly, and his head bobs up and down just a little bit. It doesn't sell the specific emotions he's expressing as richly as they could... compared to something like classic Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon shows of the past. The overseas animators should listen to the audio track, the recorded dialogue. That's what they did on on Ren & Stimpy!

Now let us to go back 10 years before Rough Draft animated that episode of Craig of the Creek... to another Cartoon Network Studios original that Rough Draft animated, the Sym-Bionic Titan episode "The Phantom Ninja":

LOOK HOW LOOSE AND SMOOTH THIS LITTLE BIT OF ANIMATION IS! ☝

This level of Korean animation quality was normal for TV cartoons back in the 2010s.

This one shot has a healthy balance of on 2s animation and on 1s animation.

It's just Ilana Lunis and Octus doing a bit of a... I don't know... a shrug... giving Lance a certain look. Not even talking in this shot, nor is it an action sequence, and this little bit of acting looks far better than Craig of the Creek ever animated in general.

Rough Draft also animates on Spongebob and they're struggling but usually excelling on the animation quality overseas.

This applies to cartoons made and aired before 2016 where post-2105 episode/content are the same quality as most post-2015 cartoons shows these days that're animated in Korea; examples are Uncle Grandpa, Samurai Jack Season 5, The Venture Bros. Season 6 onward, We Bare Bears Season 2 onward, and even later Disney TVA shows as Amphibia Season 3, The Owl House (even Luke Weber noticed the degrade in animation quality) and Hailey's On It! (excluding 2/3 of the first episode)... though mostly it involves Warner Bros. Discovery-owned properties - Turner Broadcasting System-based ones namely.

Now what are the reasons for Korean animation quality since 2016?

In the case of some post-2015 episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, the issue might be TIME, since it's a popular franchise which, among other new Nicktoons these days, Nickelodeon is trying to dump out on TV as fast as humanly possible. The Patrick Star Show seems to rarely suffer from this, however; only few episodes like "The Commadore Episode" were animated mostly on 2s and more stiff than loose - there just might not've been time for retakes, although TV and certainly streaming platforms tend to dump a bunch of episodes out all at once. Those that're animated in Korea would probably suffer from this business practice. Why can't we just put new episodes on every Thursday, Friday, or Saturday... with breaks in-between instead of not stopping until the season is over? That reminds me that most [adult swim] shows tend to have 6 or 10 episodes per season.

On the other hand... may be that Korean animators just need a break. Perhaps the Korean overseas facilities need more money... more direction... more communication... more retakes (as if we could actually afford all or any of that with today's gas prices?). Most American cartoons, which are typically animated in California (namely Burbank), are animated overseas in Korea — more so than any other country, Asian or not. Could America be overworking the Koreans? It's a possibility. Additionally, in 2024, there were some leaks that suggested that other studios had people in North Korea contracted for overseas animation work, and work between the US and the weapon-protected North side of Korea is forbidden.

Instead of overworking Korean animators, why not animate domestically here in America? In Burbank? When America had domestic animation for TV shows crippled, Japan became one of the most popular of overseas production facilities... until they became too premium for America, and America had to resort to other Asian countries like Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and in some cases even China. In my opinion, the Philippines can deliver better animation (a bit roughly but still better than Korea for the most part) for the US! Taiwan isn't as involved with Burbank animation anymore, and China rarely does anything except to animate for some shows like Secret Mountain Fort Awesome and Mike Young-era Clifford the Big Red Dog. Speaking of Rough Draft Korea, however: Hanna-Barbera sent John Kricfalusi overseas to Cuckoo's Nest Studio/Wang Film in Taiwan to train the assistant animators there in acting, animation, and layout on the 1980s' episodes (or is it a reboot?) of The Jetsons. All that John K wanted to do was character design, but he ended up doing a lot more on the show — and for an overseas Asian animation production facility prior to the founding of Rough Draft Studios!

What about rigging (puppetry in 2 dimensions), though? The future of quality TV/non-theatrical 2D animation may be in the hands of Canada's and Ireland's finest riggers. Mercury Filmworks, Boulder Media, Lighthouse Studios, Snipple Animation, and Jam Filled Entertainment can deliver better animation through rigging than Korea can do for most hand-drawn shows!

That is unless it's the Spongebob Squarepants franchise of course... that and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and... pretty much anything animated by Yearim or Yeson (most of which are adult cartoon sitcoms with rather restricted animation so as not to distract from their comedic wordplay, since those shows are more script-driven anyway).

I asked some people about the current condition of Korean animation to see what they think about that. Maxwell Atoms had a good bit to say...

The What's in My Head? podcast interview with Randy Myers largely benefited from a question I suggested on Twitter/X about the animation quality differences between the first 6 seasons of The Powerpuff Girls and the 2016-2019 PPG "reboot" episodes.

Ariel Vracin-Harrell tweeted that overseas animators often follow the storyboards "religiously", and tiny little micro-poses in storyboards can result in the animation looking "laggy and odd". (Perhaps those Korean animators view the storyboard animatics as key animation?)

Lauren Faust says that you shouldn't animate you storyboards. One example to illustrate effective storyboarding that isn't an animated storyboard animatic is the intro to Batman: The Animated Series.

Another possible reason for stiff Korean animation since 2016 might be that the Korean animators are trying to animate as clean (and thus on-model) as humanly possible.

as  sylvain and émile approached  young  adulthood  ,  their  similarities  were  becoming  fewer  and  far  between  .  they  were  becoming  their  own  people  ,  and  ideas  had  been  swirling  around  émile's  mind  for  quite  some  time  .  they  already  spent  so much  time  as  sylvain  ,  were clearly  worthier  of  the  title  he  was  born  with  .  so  ,  émile  devised  a  plan  .  when  the  two  of  them  swapped  clothes  for  the  final  time  ,  émile  led  sylvain  out  into  the  forest  and  struck  him  down  ,  marking  up  his  face  just  enough  for  his  identity  to  be  ambiguous  .  then  ,  they  ran  .

at  20  ,  émile  returned  to  poitiers  —  claiming to be the long - lost  sylvain  .  no  longer  a  boy  ,  but  a  young  man  ,  surely  he'd  gone  through  enough  change  that  his  appearance  would  hold  up  to  scrutiny  .  weaving  together  a  story  was  much  simpler  ,  anyway  ;  already able to  answer  obscure  questions  about  boyhood  , any gaps could be easily filled in .  and  the  duchess  fell  for  it  wholeheartedly .

once  settled  in  ,  they  expressed  interest  in  enlisting  in  the  army  ,  despite  the  duchess'  protests  .  she'd  only  just  gotten  them  back  ,  why  must  they  leave  again  ?  but  they  insisted  , citing a family history of military service .  really , though , they wished to feel wanted for something . something they couldn't find neither in poitou , nor as they wandered the far corners of the world . so  ,  after  completing  their  studies  , off  they  went  .  over  time  ,  they  rose  through  the  ranks  as  a  member  of  the  cavalry  .

but recognition for their martial achievements , evidently , wasn't enough . not before the reckoning , and certainly not after . they needed more , and set their sights on more lucrative targets , and on opportunities outside of the country he had come to call home .

wanting to one - up the brother he never knew propels nearly every aspect of sylvain's life .

being  a  cavalryman  ,  they  are  also  ,  naturally  ,  a  horse  girl  (  gender  neutral  )  .  they've  got  one  mount  with  them  :  their  war  horse  ,  areion  .  normally  ,  they  also  have  at least one  hack  for  everyday  activity  ,  but  considering  the  distance  from  home  ,  and  resources  required  to  spoil  take  care  of  multiple  horses  ,  they  elected  to  only  bring  areion  along  .

has fully adapted to living as sylvain , and doesn't even react when he hears the name " émile . " rarely , overhearing " emmy " seems to get a moment of pause out of him , but it's more confusion than anything else . he'll shrug it off as hearing the name of " an old friend . "

WANTED CONNECTIONS .

HIS YOUNGER SIBLINGS ( ALSO ON THE MAIN ! ) : aware  that  sylvain  had  a  lookalike  when  he  was  younger  ,  perhaps  they have  suspicions  about  his  return  over a decade ago .  despite any distrust , sylvain tries to be a good big brother , in his own way . they are influential  at  court  , within france and / or abroad ,  as  part  of  the  ambitious de  la  tremoille  brood  .  21  to  33  .

A CHILDHOOD FRIEND : someone who knew sylvain well before he became the person he is today ( when they were still just émile ) , and doesn't even realize because he's changed so much ? but he remembers them . and in spite of all the walls he's put up , all the terrible things he's done , he still holds a tenderness for them . essentially , he'll still screw them over if he needs to , but he would think twice about it .

SHIPS IN THE NIGHT : there's  a  four  or  five  year  gap  in  sylvain's  life  they  refuse  to  speak  of  .  during that time  ,  they  traveled  ,  returning  to  china  for  a  stretch  of  time  .  if someone crossed paths with him at the time , they would have witnessed a young man trying  to  find  purpose  ,  seizing  every  opportunity  they  could  to  get  ahead  ,  and  fighting  to  survive  .

ENEMIES & ADVERSARIES : not eager to burn a bridge unless he absolutely must , that certainly doesn't mean sylvain is without enemies . i'd also love to see someone he spurned in his pursuit of power , maybe turning down a betrothal with them in favor of finding a royal to marry instead .

The DLC Content

Ronin, Book 1, Chapter 25

Kyokan had arrived in the south to news of trouble at the serow monastery. He and his Grand Army had set up camp just to the south of the temple and he had awaited the generals responsible for the debacle in his vast tents. When they finally arrived, an older Kai-Ken samurai and his slightly younger Honshu counterpart, both had been wise enough to speak plainly before accepting the price for failure. It seems Koga had committed a fair number of his troops to saving a comparatively negligible contingent a few days prior. In character for his rival, but foolish. Part of him wanted to berate the pair for not rushing to engage his forces on the road, but in truth he knew they had acted wisely.

Still, failure was failure.

With their heads removed from their shoulders, Kyokan turned his attention to a much bigger problem. Even without the Honshu and Kai-Ken supplementary forces, his Grand Army dwarfed that of Koga's meager coalition by close to two thousand beasts. What gave him the potential to be truly overwhelming though were his mercenaries and they were not happy with him right now. In fact, they were threatening to leave.

The three mercenary leaders that represented the rest had refused to meet him in his quarters, a smart move all things considered, and they were currently standing out in the trees, far from prying ears and surrounded by trusted guards. The Blood Guard were a new creation of his, wolves that understood the calling of the past, and he was eager to deploy them in battle soon. If they proved as deadly as Umai was promising, the Old Guard could be supplanted entirely. An appealing prospect considering how their last few missions had gone. Sure the three sent to the valley could still be out there, but Kyokan doubted it. They were dead at the Amur cat's paw. He could feel it.

"No one's saying we expected your damned Grand Army to come charging in to save us," the marten leader, a wiry beast named Ichidan, sneered, "but to not even provide cover fire from the ridge? We aren't expendable no matter what you wolves think. We've done enough, earned enough, to sail from this place and never look back."

"An unwise decision," Kyokan said carefully. "The plunder awaiting you in the Akita, Shiba, Nekomata and Irotomi capitals will be far more than you could imagine. A lifetime of piracy and strong-arming won't come close to what you could accrue with this single enterprise." The truth was that he would kill each and everyone of these treacherous vermin before he let them renege on their agreement to help him secure the island. He didn't want it to come to that, but if it did, he would begin with Ichidan.

"Can't spend gold when you're dead," Ichidan spat. His martens had been fewer in number than the rats, so their losses were weighing more heavily on their relatively small band.

"What say you two?" Kyokan asked the enormous rat and hunched bat who until now had seemed content to watch.

"Wakka is not pleased about birds in the sky," the bat said in his odd, chirping voice. "We cannot fight hawks, Master Kyokan. Our role in this could be fast ending if you do not have a solution. Wakka thinks the siege may be different, birds won't get close with so many archers, but until then..."

"A reasonable concern," Kyokan said in what he thought a polite voice might sound like. Umai's herbs were especially potent for this meeting. The indignity of it would normally have had him seething. "I ask no more than your participation in the upcoming siege. You're right about the hawks, their time in this is limited."

Wakka seemed placated by this which only served to enrage Ichidan. Before he got going though, the rat, Yanabo, lifted a clawed finger to stop him. The furious marten heeded the warning, though it did nothing to improve his mood. "You've played your hand too early, wolf," he said with a sly grin that said he knew his worth. "You see us as fodder, an unappealing reality for us I assure you, but you still need us to bulk out this Grand Army of yours in the coming assault. Seems to me that this means we either join you, or die here in this wood. Sure plenty of ours will escape, but not us three, no, you couldn't have that. Still, our heads in the leaves are far less valuable to you than our heads shouting out orders to storm Akita walls so that your samurai don't have to. So there is room yet too...negotiate."

"So it's more gold you want?" Kyokan said, slightly incredulous. This was not about gold for him; he had already promised these vermin the bulk of whatever spoils this war might produce.

"No, well, not me anyway. Can't speak for these two," Yanabo said. "What I want is to stop sailing aimlessly for the rest of my days. This seems like a good war to make our last. What I want is land, legally held, for me and my brood. I don't care where they are, or whether we have to defend them; we just want the claim set in stone. Irrefutable."

Kyokan looked the rat over with a mixture of begrudging respect and hatred. The idea that he would allow rats, with their ever expanding numbers of hungry, worm-tailed children, a foothold on the island was insane. To even suggest it should have ended Yanabo's short miserable life on the spot, but...

"Done," Kyokan said. "Is that an arrangement that suits you as well, marten?" Promises made were far from promises kept. Killing these louts after the war would be a much smarter move than killing them now, tempting as that prospect was.

"It is," Ichidan said, looking stunned at his good fortune.

"Then it is settled," Koykan said, indulging the skulking trio with the slightest of bows. "You may return to your camps with the good news. We march soon. I have some things to attend to before that."

The three mercenaries took their leave, eyeing the Blood Guard nervously as they filed past them and out of the wood. His next visitors would be coming shortly and he needed a change of mood. Stuffing a paw lazily into his pocket, he picked out another of Umai's herb packets. The contents were a secret, Umai was a shrewd beast, but Kyokan had learned to distinguish the different kinds by feel alone. Beginning to chew this new wad as he waited, he felt the heat rush back into him instantly. He invited the rage in. He could use it now. This next part would be for show.

The leaders of the Kai-Ken and Honshu contingents were led into the wood by Blood Guards and both had the demeanor of prisoners rather than allies, which was apt. That relationship had changed the day he'd had assassins kill the elite of both clans, almost to the beast. Now they were his puppets, nothing more. He did not even know the names of the two beasts in front of him, just that they were low born and successors to a number of previous failures. Both were old, neither were warriors. Their jobs were simply to make sure his orders were carried out. They had failed as much as the generals had.

"You two," he said as the two figure heads stood before him, "have a lot to answer for." A back hand caught the Kai-Ken leader unaware and sent him sprawling, while a stiff punch to the stomach dropped the Honshu to his knees. The pummeling continued for a while, Kyokan couldn't tell how long. He lost himself in it.

When the two lay battered and bloody at his feet, but still very much aware and alive, he knelt by their prone forms and spoke clearly and directly. "The blunders of your lesser clans have made me look weak and threatened the integrity of my Grand Army. The next time your kind falls short, it will be your heads on the ground. When the final battle comes, and it is coming soon, it will be your beasts leading the charge with the mercenaries. We'll see if being put alongside the vermin reminds you what you are supposed to be." Walking to the captain of his Blood Guard, he said, "Take them back to their camps and have them strapped. Fifty should be enough."

The groans of the two beasts on the ground did not affect him in the slightest; he was already chewing on a sedative to help him forget about the whole experience.

Warner Bros. Games Acquires MultiVersus Developer 

Warner Bros. Games has acquired Player First Games, the developer of its cross-over platform fighter MultiVersus. The price of the sale was not disclosed, but according to a press release, Player First Games will continue to operate under its current leadership of co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White. 

The announcement comes only a couple of months after MultiVersus’ relaunch on May 28. Player First Games served as a work-for-hire studio on the game, and Warner Bros. is apparently pleased enough with its performance to formally bring the studio in-house. The move comes only a few days after Warner Bros. shuttered the entire mobile division of Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm Studios. 

“We have worked with Player First Games over several years to create and launch MultiVersus, and we are very pleased to welcome this talented team to Warner Bros. Games,” said David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Games. “The bright and creative team at Player First Games adds to our extensive development capabilities.”

“Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family, and we feel that this will be great for MultiVersus overall,” Huynh said. “We are working to make the MultiVersus game experience the best it can be and having our development team integrated with the publisher is optimum for the players.”

MultiVersus is a 2v2 spin on the Super Smash Bros. blueprint that pits a variety of characters from different Warner Bros. properties against each other. It was first launched in open beta in 2022 (read our review of that version here), then taken down months later to be rebuilt and expanded before returning this year. MultiVersus recently kicked off its second content season, and it has received new fighters such as The Joker, Agent Smith, Jason Voorhees, and the recently announced Samurai Jack and Beetlejuice.

Xbox 360 XBLA titles without Xbox One /Series X Support, still available to buy!

Following our latest video on the Xbox 360 store shutdown, here is the full list of Xbox Live Arcade games still up to buy on the Xbox 360. If you haven't seen the video you can watch it below.

With the Xbox 360 store closing on the 29th of July, this list baring the odd error shows all the XBLA games in the United Kingdom Xbox 360 Marketplace Shop. That don't work on Xbox One or Series X and will be lost for good at the end of the month. Some have Xbox One releases, but many are Xbox 360 exclusive. Now the final price drop event on 360 is due to happen on the 16/17th of July.

It seems unlikely any DLC will get reduced so the expensive Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends DLC you will just have to pay through the nose for! If we get time we will try to cover on Demand Games and DLCs next week.

Note at present we are still notes games not all games with extra download content on XBLA are listed correctly yet same with Xbox One versions of some games. As we discussed in our previous videos using the website to buy content is next to impossible and we are buy content via the Xbox 360 in console store.

Warning as per our previous video about the problems we had with the Rabbids Invasions Season Pass. We advice users avoid season passes on the service most are broken.
