How Has Women's Literature and Bundan Culture in Japan Evolved Over Time, from Lady Murasaki to Contemporary Magical Realism
When one thinks of Japanese culture, certain images come to mind: samurai warriors, geishas, and sushi, just to name a few. However, one aspect of Japanese culture that is often overlooked is the Bundan culture. The Bundan, which roughly translates to “literary circle,” emerged in Japan in the early 20th century and has since become a significant part of the country’s literary tradition. The…

I have never felt more seen by a book before in my entire life. Sayaka Murata fucking gets it, and it's amazing to see parts of yourself you're only recently coming to understand so lovingly (and harshly) captured in prose. #reading #books #bibliophile #conveniencestorewoman #sayakamurata https://www.instagram.com/p/ChRnVDTuokZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’m getting addicted to Japanese literature and there is no stopping it 🙃These two are the recent reads that I liked: one is about a schoolboy in love with a woman working in a convenience store, the other is about a peculiar woman working in a convenience store (a lot of things seem to take place in Japanese コンビニ... 🤔). #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instareads #whatimreading #whattoread #whattoreadnext #januaryinjapan #japaneseliterature #japaneseauthor #msicesandwich #conveniencestorewoman #miekokawakami #sayakamurata #novella #contemporaryfiction #novel (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJyMgQIAaiv/?igshid=tzt3iujr2jdg

🍁 Let’s talk about Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata 🍁 . I really enjoyed this story and getting to know Keiko. Elif Batuman said about this novel that it was "haunting, dark, and often hilarious" and I have to agree. It deals with the fact that society sometimes dictate how we should live and where we should be at a certain age and how we are judged when our way of living or thinking isn't like everybody else's. . “The normal world has no room for exceptions and always quietly eliminates foreign objects. Anyone who is lacking is disposed of” basically sums up how the world treats Keiko who is not someone we could define as "normal" (whatever that is....). . It was very interesting to read about Keiko's struggles because although she never really gets angry with the people in her life who are pressuring her to get a better job, to get married or to have kids, it is definitely frustrating to the reader (or at least it was to me). Yes, Keiko might not think and behave like everybody else, she may not want a husband and a better job but that doesn't mean she's a failure. . Thank you to Natalie at @grantabooks for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. . Let’s chat! Keiko Furukura has never quite fit in. From a young age, she is perplexed by the motivations underpinning human behavior. A strict utilitarian, Keiko prefers the most direct route to problem solving, even when that route involves violence (at age six she breaks up a fight between two boys by knocking one out with a shovel). At age 18, Keiko discovers an unlikely refuge in a part-time job at the Hiiromachi “Smile Mart,” a convenience store that issues her a manual outlining exactly what is expected of her. Eighteen years later, Keiko is still working the same job. She views the convenience store as a kind of ship of Theseus, whose constituent parts are gradually replaced while always maintaining its basic form; Keiko herself is the only constant. Though she loves her job, at age 36 Keiko remains daunted by society’s homogenizing impulses. In response to the constant pressure she feels to either get married or pursue a “better” job, Keiko develops a system of replicating her peers’ behavior to appear “normal.” When she takes a step too far in her performance of normality, Keiko must choose between living up to society’s expectations and abandoning her beloved post at the Smile Mart. Absolutely charming and utterly addictive, CONVENIENCE STORE WOMAN reads like an inverted BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER. Though it’s never exactly clear how the reader is meant to feel about Keiko, she emerges an idiosyncratic anti-heroine for the late capitalist era. We love this book! #unabridgedbookoftheweek #sayakamurata #conveniencestorewoman (at Unabridged Bookstore)

Don’t survive, live.
Written by Vesta
Turning 20 is a transition in my life that I had never imagined being this challenging. From the physical, emotional to the financial state, life gets more fast-paced as technology makes almost everything instant. There are days when I feel the most vulnerable and unsuccessful because I keep comparing myself to others at my age. It was one of the darkest days I have ever had, but thankfully, a book called Convenience Store Woman transformed my perspective in life. It opened my mind to how being stagnant is normal and acceptable.
Primarily, the book encapsulates the story of a mid-30s store worker, Keiko, who is discriminated against by society due to being weird and different. She is an unmarried woman who dedicated half of her life to a convenience store. A quote in the book that stirred my soul was, “Deep down, I wanted some kind of change. Any change, whether good or bad, would be better than the state of impasse I was in now.” While I was reading this scene, I realized that I am not alone, and getting lost in my 20s is fine. I came to yearn for a change, as I realized that even a small change, good or bad, can result in something. I recognized how significant mistakes are in the process of shaping myself into the best form that I aim to be. I also came to accept and appreciate myself because I learned that following what is popular, what society tells me, or imitating how the ‘normal’ people do will never provide the success that I seek.
After all, cliche this may sound, life is not a race nor a competition, but rather, a journey. Everyone fights their own battles and has different paths in life. Just like Keiko, some people might be weird or different from others, but they are people who have yet to be respected. As such, I am glad that at least once in this lifetime, I have come to encounter this book that has completely transformed my life. Without a doubt, it is one of my most recommended reads of all time—a timeless tale, especially for the women who struggle to conquer life.

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata It's funny how most of the books I've been reading lately seem very relatable. Some of them have the answers to the questions I've been asking myself. Others are asking me to be more honest with myself. Others are making me reaveluate my beliefs. It could be though that I am finally listening. I loved this book. I recommend it to the people who feel they do not belong anywhere. It was a short but poignant read. To me the message of this book is to⛵Live your life unapologetically🌊 I didn't want to post an aesthetically pleasing photo because frankly I am not in the mood to take one. This is my reality right now. Not books paired with antique vases. Like my chronically ill friends, I am struggling with my mental health. We have been struggling before the pandemic and we will continue to struggle after this. It's ok to acknowledge it, to be honest to ourselves and to others, and to take the time off when we need it. I love you. Take care of yourself 💕 If you've read this far, read @books_etal latest post on the importance of being gentle with ourselves. It inspired me a lot. Thank you @elleestviolette and @the_biblionaut for discovering this book before me and recommending it to me 🤍 🏷️ #bookstagram #bookphotography #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookish #bookreview #translatedliterature #asianliterature #readersofinstagram #beautifulbooks #bookworm #translatedfiction #literaryfiction #livrestagram #womensfiction #womenintranslation #januaryinjapan #sayakamurata #conveniencestorewoman #japaneseliterature #mentalhealthawareness #chronicpain #mentalhealth #invisibleillness #chronicillnessawareness https://www.instagram.com/p/CKJ6hytAhJU/?igshid=2i6601rwsmc4
