The thing about Herondaisy is that they just enjoy being around each other so damn much! I remember reading Chain of Iron, and their marriage of convenience felt realer to me than any other relationship because they clearly were so content to spend time together as much as possible. Aside from the fact that James knew Cordelia well enough to tailor the house to her exact tastes, they were excited to get home and talk and play games and learn more about each other even when they already felt so familiar. It's such a great contrast to James claiming to be in love with Grace without displaying any actual affection for who she is. He may think of his marriage to Cordelia as an act of friendship because of the bracelet suppressing his emotions, but he still wants to be married to her because he likes being around her. It is a friendship, and a real one, before it's able to be a romance. And once the bracelet is gone and James is able to properly sort out his feelings, it's clear that James and Cordelia still like being together in any capacity. They're perfect partners because they are always happier when they can share things with each other, and they're always excited to go home because it means more time together.

The thing about saying that C*rdelia in AtS season 3 is a “Saint Corduffy” (a cheap imitation of Buffy) is that Buffy was never portrayed as being the unquestionable voice of reason, the moral center of the universe, the person who never makes a wrong decision in her life, who always knows what to do and what to say to fix any situation, mother of the year, the most emotionally intelligent person who can read people without them even having to say a word, the most selfless champion who is so pure and so powerful that she outgrows the mortal realm and has to ascend to a higher dimension of existence to fulfill her destiny, the most supportive love interest who’s only loyalty is to the man in her life...

Buffy was a champion and a selfless hero, but she was also always allowed to be flawed, messy, to make mistakes of her own agency and to face the consequences of those mistakes, to have insecurities and to act in ways that were unpleasant, beyond just being self involved, snarky, and insulting people. She constantly struggled not just with her calling but with who she was as a person.

But most of all, Buffy was never as painfully boring, pretentious, and one dimensional as “Saint C*rdelia”, and I just don’t really see how that equivalent can be made in any substantial way.

I’ve been WAITING for someone to ask this because listen… Komori Yui slander is the most tired discourse in the Diabolik Lovers fandom and I am here with a cup of rose tea and centuries of gothic rage to defend my soft, sunshine girl. So sit tight. We're going in anime, game, manga, AND soul.

Let’s be real: the anime did her dirty. It gave her like… 7 lines and made her say “no… stop…” on loop. But hear me out: the anime is not her fault. It’s like judging a painting after seeing only the primer. She’s not "weak" she’s silenced.

Yui in the anime is stuck in a story where the camera is obsessed with her trauma but doesn’t let her own it. It’s not that she’s a “doormat,” it’s that the anime shoves her into a box labeled “victim girl” and refuses to let her breathe.

But did she cry every time? No.

Did she give up? No.

Did she still try to understand the Sakamakis, even when they were acting like psychotic theatre kids with trauma? YES.

Yui’s strength is subtle, emotional, resilient. She stays soft in a world that wants to rip her soul apart. That’s not weakness that’s defiance.

Well in game , Bless the visual novels. If you’ve only watched the anime, I BEG you to look into Haunted Dark Bridal or More Blood because Yui is so much more than a doll with glassy eyes.

In the games:

She fights back (verbally and even physically).

She calls the boys out (yes, even Ayato, even Reiji, even Shu).

She sets boundaries and stands her ground more than once.

She’s shown to be curious, empathetic, clever, and yes forgiving but never naive.

There are moments where she straight-up disobeys the vampires. She plays mind games with them. She even develops her own agency in routes like Subaru’s, Laito’s, and Kanato’s. And let’s not even get started on her potential dark sides in the Maniac endings. That girl’s got layers like a cursed rose.

In the manga? She actually thinks. You get her internal monologue, her spiritual crisis, her worry about the lump in her chest (aka Cordelia’s heart), her doubts, her moments of anger. You see her literally start to question the meaning of love and control, which is the core theme of DL.

In her internal conflict, she’s saying what a LOT of people in abusive situations feel.

That’s not weakness. That’s real. That’s the quiet power of compassion in the face of cruelty, and it’s what MAKES the vampires start to change.

People love to stan strong, sword-wielding, punch-the-villain heroines (and I do too!), but Yui? She’s emotional resilience. She’s the girl who walks through the castle full of monsters and still sees their pain. Still tries to reach them. Still chooses kindness, even after they bite her, belittle her, and treat her like prey.

Yui is not a badass because she fights them with fists,she’s a badass because she fights them with hope, and doesn’t lose herself in their chaos.

She doesn’t need to yell to be strong. She doesn’t need to be “snarky” to be brave. Her softness is a sword of its own.

Yui Komori hate is just internalized misogyny wrapped in vampire aesthetics.

Like… you simp for six immortal trauma boys who drink blood for fun, but drag the literal teenage kidnapping victim for not kung-fu fighting them?? Be serious. 😭

Yui is soft, kind, and patient in a world that chews up girls like her and spits them out and she still forgives, still survives, still sees the good in people. That’s not weak. That’s biblical. That’s divine feminine energy.

You want her to be a “strong female lead”? Baby, she is. Just not the way you expect.

Buffy and Angel flirting before they know he’s a vampire. He still looks like mid twenties AT LEAST. They call him an older guy. Giles doesn’t care. Her friends don’t care or think he’s cool or are jealous. Cordelia wants to flirt with him too even though he’s the same age (though to be fair this one’s not the fault of any of the kids). It’s not until they find out that he’s a vampire that he becomes a problem, and even then, once they’re reassured he’s a good vampire everyone is fine with them FULLY DATING even though now they know he’s not in his 20s but over 200

The fake praying mantis science teacher. She flirts with all the boys who are STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL, quite obviously in the school/class. Even when she invites students TO HER HOUSE to work on a project no one bats an eye. If i was a parent and a new substitute teacher that I’ve never met wanted my kid to come to their house to “work on a project” i would AT LEAST drop them off. Nobody bats an eye until they realize she’s a monster

Cordelia fully dating a college senior (so 21-22 years old). Not AS bad but also no one in her life was like hey. This is a little sus. Again, young girls flirting with college students is not their fault. The college students should know better. It’s not a problem until it’s discovered the fraternity is sacrificing high school girls to a monster. Even when Buffy and Cordelia are rescued from the party, Buffy is scolded and the blame is placed on her for getting herself into this situation. They still face consequences but just the way it’s framed is so icky!!!

Like I know age gap discourse is a slippery slope but there is still very much an age of consent and it is literally illegal and they’re brushing these things off like they’re nothing does a big part of normalizing behaviors like that for young and impressionable people watching. The message is more like, “they weren’t punished for preying on young teenagers, they were only punished for being a monster and/or killing people”

9 and 17 for the fic ask game

9. How did you get into writing fanfiction?

Ok this is not something I'm necessarily proud of. And it's maybe not the best idea for me to be saying this publicly actually but oh well. But I'd dabbled with writing fic occasionally throughout my teen years but never posted or even finished anything. And then in [checks my own ao3 page] 2019, which for those of you who weren't keeping score was around the tail end of tumblr ace discourse era, I was really into buffy the vampire slayer for the first time and there was a particular buffy fic writer who shall go unnamed who I followed whose fics I really, really loved. Except then they started reblogging just. the most absolutely heinous shit about ace people like not even the "oh I totally support ace people I just don't think they're lgbt and also [insert 500 other caveats no sane person would ever apply to any other marginalised community here]" stuff that was acceptable in 2019 but literally like. posts about asexuality not being a real sexuality. posts saying people shouldn't identify as asexual at all. posts saying teaching teenagers about asexuality is inappropriate. it was crazy. anyway they're now extremely blocked but I did get so mad about a writer whose fic I liked turning out to be crazy aphobic that I decided to start posting fic about aspec headcanons out of spite.

And now I post fic where I write cordelia chase as asexual and also simultaneously a survivor of sexual trauma and also simultaneously headcanon her as autistic, which would literally get you executed by firing squad on 2018/2019 tumblr and now everyone loves me for it. so who's the real fucking winner here

17. What is something you recently felt proud of in your writing?

Gonna try not to reveal too much bc lord knows I'm precious about my baby but I'm really proud of a specific scene I wrote for origin of species right at the end of finishing the first draft. It's for a later chapter and not gonna be published for ages I'm sure but it's another dream sequence in a similar vein to the one in chapter 6, except using a much more complicated and much more difficult to outline and write format, and even though it's only a first draft I do think it's actually turned out super well and is gonna be really really effective when it's done. Can't say too much about the content or even the format I'm using but. suffice to say it's probably the most ambitious thing in the whole fic

Cordelia is petty about losing debates, people (especially nobles) talking over her, insincerity, thoughtlessness... She can be awfully cutting with her words, even in lighthearted discourse. She is rarely avoidant or passive aggressive, she will tell you (if you're a friend) if you've done something to piss her off... and only then will she go somewhere to stew. But not for long! She's not really one to hold grudges, at least against people she cares about. Nobility, on the other hand... Heat their food or drink enough to burn their mouth, make some backhanded compliment about their hairpiece, you get the idea.

Tagged by @negrowhat to give away all my fandom secrets. I came up in the US, so most of these will be Western shows. Also be aware that I'm old and been around in fandoms for decades, some of you youths might not even recognize these ships.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

Felicity and Noel. I was very into them (and very anti-Ben) when I was first watching this show at the tender age of 14, but then I rewatched it as an adult, realized Noel was a classic Nice Guy with some clear warning flags, and settled into Team Ben.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Hmm maybe Elizabeth Wakefield and Todd Wilkins? I think I started reading Sweet Valley High at, like, age 8. For TV, I was a sitcom kid and I was obsessed with Dwayne Wayne and his flip-up glasses as a child. I loved him and Whitley. Damn now I want to rewatch.

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

The first I read? I am pretty sure the honor goes to Buffy and Spike.

They were the first ship I remember having that classic fanfic brainrot combo of 1) captivating me entirely with their dynamic and 2) canon leaving me unsatisfied. I lost months of my life over at Elysian Fields.

In terms of the first fanfic I wrote, the honor goes to Ian and Mickey.

I was big into Shameless for its first four seasons. But then the show went way off the rails, the fandom went with it, and I quit watching and scrubbed all my fandom activity off the internet.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

I honestly have no idea. Probably something Buffy, I was doing a lot of internet dwelling for that show.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

Getting into discourse is my whole entire thing LOL. I have survived many, many ship wars and let me tell ya you haven't seen unhinged until you've been knee deep in the tags in a long-term fandom with multiple ships for the protagonist. One of the things I love about BL and nearly all Asian dramas is that we go into every show knowing who the main pairing is, so we don't have to fight about ships.

6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?

Hmm I was a big Buffy/Angel anti and that was before Spuffy was even a twinkle in my eye. I never liked that man in a romance until he got hooked up with Cordelia in his own show (but then they ruined it ugh). I was also very anti-Harry/Hermione back in the OG HP days (let characters have meaningful platonic relationships!).

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

I've been on a Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian kick of late.

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

OTPs are eternal! Like I said above, since I mostly watch Asian drama now, they're baked in. My fav of my current watches is Ten and Prem.

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

YES I AM STILL MAD ABOUT ROBIN AND BARNEY.

You show me two characters who are clearly uniquely compatible, you give me a brief taste of their extremely fun and non-traditional relationship, and then you break them up and stick her with the milquetoast Nice Guy protagonist in a total betrayal of your entire narrative premise? Fuck off forever, HIMYM, I will see you in hell.

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

Hmm nothing comes to mind. If I decided to hate a pair in the past I am pretty likely to still be hating.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I would like to see you try to cancel me!! I'll echo Eboni here and say Brian and Justin, though of course there were people who hated them because of the age gap back in ye olden times, too. Fandom spaces are mostly women and women in queer fandom spaces often struggle to account for the totally different culture and power dynamics between m/m pairings.

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

I don't really do crack ships, I am a canon pairing girlie.

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?

I don't know who the ultimate winner is, but I think it's probably a neck and neck competition between Spuffy and Wangxian as my most read pairing.

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

There's actually a lot of variety in them in terms of personalities, appearance, and tropes. I think what makes me really click into a ship is the feeling that the two people are uniquely suited to each other and well matched to go through life together.

15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

When I don't believe they can actually make it.

1. My favorite thing about the fandom

I've probably said this before, but I honestly really like that tri strat's a pretty small fandom! I love some more popular things like fire emblem, but I rarely participate in those fandoms because it's more intimidating to post stuff that I know significantly more people will be looking at. Even my stuff on triangle-strategy-notes, which isn't super creative (like fanfic or fanart) is stuff I probably wouldn't do for fe. There's already Japanese -> English translation discourse going on over there and I know I'd probably get zinged for a lot of the mistakes I make on the artbook stuff hahahaha.

4. My favorite fanart from the fandom

I'm going to do several here bc there is SO MUCH cool fan art for triangle strategy esp. considering how small it is.

@kelbunny's Cordelia paladin concept has lived in my head rent free ever since she posted it because I am thinking 24/7 about how cool it would have been if Cordelia had ended up with a more significant role after retaking Whiteholm (not that a healer can't have a significant role but. we all know JRPG protags have to have at least one sword or will the devs REALLY let them be a JRPG protag). It's such a fun concept, and I also really love the way it parallels Avlora's dark knight thing she's got going on. It's just!!!! very cool!!!!!

The scene in general is SO GOOD and I just think it's a really cool drawing of it :) She also has a ton of other cool tri strat + fire emblem art that I really enjoy

6. My favorite character

To the surprise of probably no one I love Avlora a whole lot :) :) :) I'm a sucker for morally grey characters in general and Avlora in particular is really interesting to me for a few different reasons. One big difference between her and a character like Edelgard von Fire Emblem is that Avlora is just super unapologetically not feminine in the typical sense. She super easily could have been written as a man with essentially zero changes to the script outside of pronouns, and there's no "whoa isn't it nuts that we're taking orders from a woman?" moments or really any acknowledgement whatsoever that it's uncustomary for the setting. And the same thing goes for a lot of Tri Strat's female characters which I think is really cool! I don't have anything against girlbosses getting to be a little girly on occasion (and I think for Edelgard in particular it works well considering her whole arc with trust + vulnerability), but there's definitely something really cool about Avlora getting to step outside the stereotypes a bit and just get to be a general without so many references to her gender.

The funniest part about that discourse about Jayce being able to break the Gracelet is that James absolutely did do that. Like I get where you're coming from but James very much did break it with his love. Do I think Jayce mid TMI could have done it too? Yeah sure. I also think that if James had already known he was in love with Cordelia before the bracelet was on that it would've broken faster. Like I think thats the whole point actually. I'm not gona tag this because I have no interest in reigniting that argument but I DID think it was really funny when it was happening.
