SHIPPER TAG GAME

Tagged by @negrowhat to give away all my fandom secrets. I came up in the US, so most of these will be Western shows. Also be aware that I'm old and been around in fandoms for decades, some of you youths might not even recognize these ships.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

Felicity and Noel. I was very into them (and very anti-Ben) when I was first watching this show at the tender age of 14, but then I rewatched it as an adult, realized Noel was a classic Nice Guy with some clear warning flags, and settled into Team Ben.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Hmm maybe Elizabeth Wakefield and Todd Wilkins? I think I started reading Sweet Valley High at, like, age 8. For TV, I was a sitcom kid and I was obsessed with Dwayne Wayne and his flip-up glasses as a child. I loved him and Whitley. Damn now I want to rewatch.

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

The first I read? I am pretty sure the honor goes to Buffy and Spike.

They were the first ship I remember having that classic fanfic brainrot combo of 1) captivating me entirely with their dynamic and 2) canon leaving me unsatisfied. I lost months of my life over at Elysian Fields.

In terms of the first fanfic I wrote, the honor goes to Ian and Mickey.

I was big into Shameless for its first four seasons. But then the show went way off the rails, the fandom went with it, and I quit watching and scrubbed all my fandom activity off the internet.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

I honestly have no idea. Probably something Buffy, I was doing a lot of internet dwelling for that show.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

Getting into discourse is my whole entire thing LOL. I have survived many, many ship wars and let me tell ya you haven't seen unhinged until you've been knee deep in the tags in a long-term fandom with multiple ships for the protagonist. One of the things I love about BL and nearly all Asian dramas is that we go into every show knowing who the main pairing is, so we don't have to fight about ships.

6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?

Hmm I was a big Buffy/Angel anti and that was before Spuffy was even a twinkle in my eye. I never liked that man in a romance until he got hooked up with Cordelia in his own show (but then they ruined it ugh). I was also very anti-Harry/Hermione back in the OG HP days (let characters have meaningful platonic relationships!).

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

I've been on a Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian kick of late.

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

OTPs are eternal! Like I said above, since I mostly watch Asian drama now, they're baked in. My fav of my current watches is Ten and Prem.

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

YES I AM STILL MAD ABOUT ROBIN AND BARNEY.

You show me two characters who are clearly uniquely compatible, you give me a brief taste of their extremely fun and non-traditional relationship, and then you break them up and stick her with the milquetoast Nice Guy protagonist in a total betrayal of your entire narrative premise? Fuck off forever, HIMYM, I will see you in hell.

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

Hmm nothing comes to mind. If I decided to hate a pair in the past I am pretty likely to still be hating.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I would like to see you try to cancel me!! I'll echo Eboni here and say Brian and Justin, though of course there were people who hated them because of the age gap back in ye olden times, too. Fandom spaces are mostly women and women in queer fandom spaces often struggle to account for the totally different culture and power dynamics between m/m pairings.

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

I don't really do crack ships, I am a canon pairing girlie.

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?

I don't know who the ultimate winner is, but I think it's probably a neck and neck competition between Spuffy and Wangxian as my most read pairing.

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

There's actually a lot of variety in them in terms of personalities, appearance, and tropes. I think what makes me really click into a ship is the feeling that the two people are uniquely suited to each other and well matched to go through life together.

15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

When I don't believe they can actually make it.

But at the time I didn't know the showrunners were racists and felt like Nicole Beharie and Orlando Jones were too "outspoken" when they were really just two darkskinned black actors demanding the respect they deserve.

• Comitting to intellectual freedom, while disavowing and attacking ideology:

To be clear, an ideology is by definition a belief system with an inadequate basis in reality, and therefore always vulnerable to the recourse of violence (verbal and/or physical) whenever it is moved to defend itself, especially when those areas of reality-inadequacy are being highlighted. Furthermore, an ideology is in the business of aggrandising those who subscribe to it, and by definition demonising those who do not.

Solzhenitsyn wrote, ‘Physics is aware of phenomena which occur only at threshold magnitudes, which do not exist at all until a certain threshold encoded by and known to nature has been crossed. Evidently evildoing also has a threshold magnitude. Yes, a human being hesitates and bobs back and forth between good and evil all his life, but just so long as the threshold of evildoing is not crossed, the possibility of returning remains, and he himself is still within reach of our hope.’ He went on to say: … ‘The imagination and spiritual strength of Shakespeare’s evildoers stopped short at a dozen corpses, because they had no ideology.’

Promoting preferment or demotion or the throttling of opportunity due to race is inherently perverse, retrograde and dangerous.

• A refusal to replace ideas with ‘identity’; your ‘identity’ is not a catch-all accessory that inures you from your actions or your espoused ideas; it is not a shield, yet it can often be a marker for your obvious subservience to an ideology, and due to passed enormities of said ideology you shouldn’t be surprised if people, and myself, don’t want anything to do with you. You’re a human being, not a capriciously customisable gnostic mannequin.

• Debate over denunciation, persuasion over mere public shaming; don’t tell me how I should think and feel about a person or idea. Ex cathedra positions are hard-won and earned; presuming this position without merit is absurd and should be exposed, and furthermore, if you’re able to and in the mood: mocked, whenever encountered.

• The rule of law over the self-righteous fury of the mob; history teaches that the mob is capable of all and any depravity, and always feels justified in the act, however obscene.

• That said, it is vital to understand that an uninformed majority will always lose a battle for information against an informed minority; it’s important to notice when a manipulative minority is holding an unaware majority to ransom. This is, again, particularly prevalent when dealing with ideologues.

1. My favorite thing about the fandom

I've probably said this before, but I honestly really like that tri strat's a pretty small fandom! I love some more popular things like fire emblem, but I rarely participate in those fandoms because it's more intimidating to post stuff that I know significantly more people will be looking at. Even my stuff on triangle-strategy-notes, which isn't super creative (like fanfic or fanart) is stuff I probably wouldn't do for fe. There's already Japanese -> English translation discourse going on over there and I know I'd probably get zinged for a lot of the mistakes I make on the artbook stuff hahahaha.

4. My favorite fanart from the fandom

I'm going to do several here bc there is SO MUCH cool fan art for triangle strategy esp. considering how small it is.

@kelbunny's Cordelia paladin concept has lived in my head rent free ever since she posted it because I am thinking 24/7 about how cool it would have been if Cordelia had ended up with a more significant role after retaking Whiteholm (not that a healer can't have a significant role but. we all know JRPG protags have to have at least one sword or will the devs REALLY let them be a JRPG protag). It's such a fun concept, and I also really love the way it parallels Avlora's dark knight thing she's got going on. It's just!!!! very cool!!!!!

The scene in general is SO GOOD and I just think it's a really cool drawing of it :) She also has a ton of other cool tri strat + fire emblem art that I really enjoy

6. My favorite character

To the surprise of probably no one I love Avlora a whole lot :) :) :) I'm a sucker for morally grey characters in general and Avlora in particular is really interesting to me for a few different reasons. One big difference between her and a character like Edelgard von Fire Emblem is that Avlora is just super unapologetically not feminine in the typical sense. She super easily could have been written as a man with essentially zero changes to the script outside of pronouns, and there's no "whoa isn't it nuts that we're taking orders from a woman?" moments or really any acknowledgement whatsoever that it's uncustomary for the setting. And the same thing goes for a lot of Tri Strat's female characters which I think is really cool! I don't have anything against girlbosses getting to be a little girly on occasion (and I think for Edelgard in particular it works well considering her whole arc with trust + vulnerability), but there's definitely something really cool about Avlora getting to step outside the stereotypes a bit and just get to be a general without so many references to her gender.

Its been 7 months since I last posted to this account, but now I have something to share! I'm nervous to post this (it's why I'm posting from a sideblog) but I really want to get it off my chest. Especially because this blog has so few followers it feels a bit like talking into the void.

As I go further into my transition, I find myself reading more and more into detransitioning. I'm the kind of person who likes knowing all my options before making a decision, and then having a backup plan if that goes wrong. It is important to me to be able to have a community if I decide the trans label just isn't for me. The medical transitioning has been very good for me. Since starting gel testosterone I've felt more at home and comfortable in my body than I have in years. In fact, the comfortability in my body has what made me more open to other philosophies. Ive felt more distanced from the online trans community (especially after the transandrophobia discourse and tme/tma and realizing that lots of people just don't care about trans men's lived experiences or discrimination). I'm reading more about feminism, loved the read Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine, and it led me into the radfem side of tumblr. I've never read these blogs, before transitioning they just made me feel terrible, but now that I've grown up and I don't care about other people's validation as much as when I was a teen, I think I'm able to read more objectively. I'm interested in gender abolition, but I don't know where to start. I want to have decent, respectful conversations with other people on this blog, especially now that I can respond to comments without exposing my main.

Cam tried to offer a small smile, a token of hopefulness, but the topic of his mother was always a challenge.

Cameron didn't right away respond. In many ways he was still processing so much of his grief that he had swallowed all these years. It felt strange letting it freely breathe through him. The sharpness of it was surpising almost like he was again that 17 year old boy, sad and alone

Description: She's a girlboss, she's a war criminal, she's died and come back from the dead... Born in an incredibly unhealthy family situation, escaped, was meant to have a redemption arc and then just got *worse.* Joined up with a gang of equally fucked up adventurers to take down a megalomaniacal technology magnate whose solution to population control was to kill a bunch of people and *still* managed to lose the moral high ground. The party was so morally fucked that the "good ending" for the campaign would have been them all dying and the eldritch blood god we were trying to stop taking over the world. So good at lying she got away with some of the world's most ridiculous cover stories. Plays both the violin and chess for maximum manipulative villain tropes.

Crimes: Was part of a reactionary terrorist group that considered civilian casualities as an acceptable cost for getting their aims (taking out a well-loved public figure). Has killed multiple people to do so, and also helped cover up multiple murders. Had a contingency plan to murder all of her party members if necessary. Nearly got all of them killed during a heist so that she could fulfil a personal agenda she hadn't told anyone about. Found a cursed sentient dagger that told her it would grow in power if she killed people with it, went "sure, I can use this" and promptly did exactly that.

Description: She is an OC I made for the [adult swim] series Metalocalypse ,but honestly it doesn't matter too much since most of my fics involving her take place before the series even starts (although watch as all of them become outdated by the time of the finale movie LOL). In any case she was a law school student that was seduced and got pregnant by a demonic entity in human form before being abandoned by said demon after she starts to get sus, rendering her a struggling single mother with unhealthy coping mechanisms. Manages to be both a girlboss and a girlfailure at the same time

Crimes: There would be SOOOO much discourse if she was canon considering she is genuinely loving and well-intended in trying to have her son's best interest ,but man was she neglectful in that "parents of Gen X" kind of way except in some ways kind of worse thanks to being a high functioning alcoholic which traumatized her son in a way that affected his relationships with other people as an adult (ie concerning levels of codependency). Even if granted half of this wouldn't have happened if a few small decisions from her lover didn't kind of ruin her and her sons' lives and it's not hard to feel bad for her since her boss and co-workers kind of treat her like garbage. Basically we love us a problematic ,but complex MILF (if only I had the energy to write more!!!)

I get the feeling from the cangel centric discourse that I’ve seen online, that a lot of cangel shippers mostly ship it because they’re Cordelia fans first and they only really see value in Angel as a character when he’s romantically interested in Cordelia or they think that all of Angel’s character development occurred because of Cordelia, which is something that I deeply disagree with. What do you think?

I honesty don't know about Cangel shippers. From my observations, most Cangel shippers seem to be people who never cared for Angel and/or Bangel on BtVS and/or prefer AtS/never watched BtVS. I don't know if they're Cordelia fans first. I'm not involved in the fandom apart from reblogging stuff and replying to asks...

As for Angel's development occurring because of Cordelia, I disagree with that as well. You can read more about it here. Imo Cordelia was as responsible for Angel's development on AtS as Doyle and Wesley. I'd argue Doyle had a bigger impact on Angel in season 1, and after, Cordelia and Wesley had an equal yet distinct influence on Angel. But Buffy and Connor were more influential to Angel overall, followed by Wesley, though Wesley's influence was more indirect than Cordelia's, hence why his and Angel's relationship is, imo, tragically overlooked. I've always thought Wesley and Angel's relationship was the heart of AtS and that they were a kind of "soulmates" who were, sadly, never able to truly become the friends they wanted to be. But I digress...

🔥 anything tsc related

the biggest problem with Queen of Air and Darkness to me is that it really should have been two books. I really enjoy the grief exploration in that book in the wake of Livvy’s death felt cathartic to me on reread and I find Julian’s switch-off arc in relation to that fascinating. I enjoy Thule in terms of how it ties into the main arc with the blackthorns although I’m not crazy about the twp set ups from it. Basically there’s quite a bit in that book I do like but as a finale it’s rushed and disappointing. I also do think either Julian or Emma or both dying would have made the ending slay and I say this as someone who clearly looooves them both and Blackstairs (considering how much I love blackstairs as it is think I would be even more insane about it if we got full tragic potential realized).

Grace x Lucie is thee toxic yuri dynamic in tsc and I think ya’ll are cowards for not paying attention to it. Literally the only reason I would reread tlh is to write fic about them ChoI era because someone should.

on a related note Lucie Herondale reads as a lesbian to me, she says at one point she’s never been attracted to a boy other than Jesse who is kind of a phantom she can make into whatever she wants / project storybook romance tropes onto in a sense for most of the books and she reads as more attracted to Cordelia with the whole ‘Beautiful Cordelia’ fanfiction and like I said her most interesting dynamic with the most chemistry is her and Grace, so yeah I get comp het vibes personally I know that’s my subjective read.

I’m pretty neutral on Clary sometimes I really liked her sometimes I was frustrated by her but I do think this counts as unpopular since most either hate or love her. I do think she falls into the 2010s heroine who is written to have an overly romantically focused arc but all her interesting bits of characterization are about tangential platonic dynamics that the author doesn’t care to elaborate on much… but also this could be an ungenerous or overly generous assessment since it’s been years since I touched og tmi. I do side eye some people for giving Jace a lot of grace to be ‘complex’ and process his trauma and be dismissive of how much she goes through in the books ( I kind of hate Jace. without nuance)

I think I deserve one on one Tessa and Julian interactions in twp, not for any logical reason I just think I deserve it since they’re my two favorite tsc characters. And there’s a lot of fan service in recent tsc anyway… let me have this.

Kieran is overrated I don’t dislike him and enjoy him in the context of Kierarktina and as a foil to Julian, but I don’t fervently love him the way a lot of people do. (I also really disliked his fandom when the tda books were coming out so that might influence this).

I want Thule! Emma to come into play in twp … I’m very interested in the idea of her in the aftermath of Thule Julian and Sebastian’s deaths. I had an idea for a fic about her but didn’t write it partly because of laziness partly because I felt I’d have to go back to tmi to remember endarkened lore for that.

Grace Blackthorn discourse was kind of unserious… not because I don’t think people can have valid reasons to dislike her obviously those exist. What she did to James was sexual assault and of course fans who hate her for it are valid. But I COULD NOT with some of statements about her especially on twitter that were like ‘well if she was a Male Character ya’ll would never forgive her and she would never get a redemption arc she only does cause she’s a pretty white girl’ like GORL. GORL what universe are you living in what paranormal/fantasy media do you consume and engage in fandoms for if you think that a male character who does a nebulous magical consent violation is going to get Less grace (no pun intended) from the narrative and fandom than a female character and would NEVER get a redemption arc. I can’t even ya’ll are dumb. If I’m being really generous maybe they just don’t read/watch a lot of paranormal media other than tsc because otherwise I…

I'm obsessed with their arc: gahhh. early buffy was so mean to cordilia but she made it out!!!! I love that she starts to confront her behavior while still in high school & then starts to deal w stuff differently on angel. the realization of ur not being the center of the universe and how grueling adult existence can be but still chosing to stay positive and actively supporting ppl that need help!!!!!

they got done dirty by the fans: I mean. some ppl just think of her as a high school bitch. lots of mutuals are cool ofc but in a wider fandom sense. mannn. also the virgin vs whore discourse w buffy and her is fucking crazy
