So here’s the star of the Cooking Chicken Day! It’s a 6.5 lb. Cornish cross chicken from our farm. It was processed about 3 weeks ago and is going to bless us today with every part used to eat from broth to the baked chicken itself. 57 meals of chicken on the shelf and we aren't done harvesting yet. Granted somebody this is last year's chicken that we got out of the freezer and canned. 1 jar - bone in quart or boned pint - is generally 1 meal for this family. This chicken "homestead fast food" a lot of times finds it way into a stir fry of some sorts or another. Definitely not limited to stir fry though as we use it for a lot of stuff like pot pie, Alfredo, chicken quesadillas, various soups, chicken salad, chicken tacos, and so much more. This chicken "homestead fast food" Is so nice as we are trying to eat before getting out the door for a sporting event or some other kid event. No remembering to get it out of the freezer. No waiting for it to thaw. Today our first batch of meat birds arrived. I cleaned out the old hog barn and joined two of the stalls to make the area for the Ohio brooder, which I have started calling mother. It is such a simple yet effective design. The birds can self regulate their temp by darting in and out as they need. And for 125 birds it only uses 2 125W bulbs. The #cornishcross are finally getting a larger #brooder. It has to go on the back porch or now and I’m crossing my fingers, they will be warm enough. The heat lamp is hooked up and one side of the to is covered to hold in the heat. We’ve had them about 3 weeks and they are butterballs!! #growingquick #chickensofinstagram

Yesterday we moved the younger meat birds to the chicken tractor. The tractor is moved daily around the property to fresh grass, it’s currently being moved through the orchard. I had a little talk with one of the juevies as we strolled to his new location. We spend time with the birds to assess their health and size. Late night check on the meat birds last night. Their first night on pasture. Was kind of puzzled as to why they weren't all under the trailer. There is plenty of room. And if I would have been watching the weather I might have waited a couple days. All rain. Trying this "open" method this year of no real "cage/tractor". Mimicking what I have seen @thejustinrhodesshow and @rebekah.rhodes roads do. I like the concept so I just implemented using our utility trailer and some plywood. Electric netting as well. Our biggest predator is raccoon and am hoping this keeps them out! The other a young friend said “Mr Hayden you’ve been talking about getting this farm up and running and now you have done it” all I could do was agree. I’ve been working at this model for years. The concept was introduced to me by animal welfare approved. It seemed impossible and impractical because everyone knew raises cornishcross or freedomrangers or is not making money. Animal welfare approved promotes on farm birth, life and harvest. This is where I am and what I do. I have layers, I hatch their eggs, brood then field raise the chicks for 16 weeks, give them a great life and complete it with an on farm harvest. We were hoping for layers but #Wilco didn’t have the ones we wanted. BUT they did still have #CornishCross 5/free when you buy a bag of chick starter feed. Last night, Mr. Misty said, “No!” because we would need to butcher them just as our bees come in. I think the cashier made him feel bad about it... so we now have chickies!!! Yay!!

Making broth with the fee, neck, and gizzards of one of our Cornish cross chickens. Added some of our celery, rosemary and asparagus tops along with onions and bay leaves. It aroma is delicious! Saving the liver and heart to fry. The chicken is in the oven; it’s 6&1/2 lbs. The seasonings are from the entire rib of celery, leaves and all. Nothing was wasted. What was left from seasoning the chicken went into the broth, stock pot. It doesn’t have to look pretty to be delicious or useful. 40 chickens harvested this weekend. 35 jars (1 didn't seal and is in fridge) canned thighs, legs, and wings. SWIPE -->>> check out the LITTLE AMOUNT amount going into the freezer! I'm super excited about this. Breasts, tenderloins, and some wings. I am hoping to start reducing our need for 3 freezers 😀. 85 left to butcher next weekend.
